The fawns will have been born from mid-June onwards, and we’ll take you to the places you are most likely to catch a glimpse. Restoration Station: the renaissance of Bat & Ball Station 2018-2019 Sevenoaks Camera Club supported Sevenoaks Town Council’s project to transform the previously boarded-up Bat & Ball Station building into a historical community hub in northern Sevenoaks. Derek Medhurst and Roger Lee took photos on more than 40 occasions and the pictures form a fascinating ‘before, during and after’ archive of this local heritage landmark.

Their exhibition will be held in the Booking Hall of the refurbished Station. 10am – 4pm each day.

Ending the blame game in divorce A fter fifty years, divorce regulation is ready to change. The government announced that new legislation will be introduced and published a consultation paper on 15 September 2018, which ran until the 10 December 2018. The government’s response was published in April 2019, and marks a landmark change in divorce law.

The proposed changes are based on a sole objective: reduce family conflict. The government understands that to achieve this objective, couples should not be required to blame one another during the divorce proceedings. Under current legislation, the person starting the divorce proceedings (the petitioner) must give evidence of one of the established facts, even if the divorce is a mutual decision. Thereby, the couples need either to have been separated for two years if both spouses agree or separated for five years if one spouse does not agree, or the petitioner must make allegations in regard to the respondent’s conduct; adultery, unreasonable behaviour or desertion. By removing these requirements the government is reflecting popular belief that there does not need to be unnecessary stress or upset for divorcing couples and, most importantly, the children of divorcing couples. The only requirement would be to provide a statement of irretrievable breakdown.

The removal of the facts is not the only proposed change. The new legislation will also include the introduction of a joint application for divorce and the introduction of a minimum timeframe of six months between the divorce petition and the finalising of the divorce. The new regulation would retain the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage as a sole ground and

the two-stage legal process – decree nisi and decree absolute (as currently) with at least six weeks between each application. The ability to contest a divorce would also be removed. There is, also, an intention to modernise some of the terms used within the divorce, such as ‘petitioner’, ‘decree nisi’, ‘decree absolute’.

Giving time to the divorcing couples to think about the decision that they have made or, even to reconcile, is the reason behind the minimum timeframe of six months. David Guake, Secretary of State for Justice, says that the law should help to ensure that the relationships are saved if there is a possibility before they are legally ended.

He also says that an opportunity to repair their relationship should be provided to divorcing couples, even when the decision has been mutually agreed. This ‘proof ’ that the decision to divorce has been properly considered by the spouses has been introduced as an objective for the reformed law, that ensures the reflection upon future arrangements. One of the conclusions that the government reached from the consultation is that the people find that the current system marks against reconciliation, offering little opportunity for repair, which in turn can be damaging for the children of a marriage.

This is not the first time that the government has tried to modify the law. The Family Law Act 1996 intended to modernise the divorce proceedings in England and Wales but it was a too complex reform and failed to provide the reform it had intended. With the new reforms, English law could now fall more in line with other more forward thinking jurisdictions. www.judge-priestly.co.uk

What is a Will?

A Will is a legal document that outlines how your estate will be divided after your death. Without one, dealing with your estate will take longer and can lead to upset and stress for your family, at an already difficult time.

What happens if you die without a Will?

If you die without a Will your estate will be distributed in accordance with the law of intestacy.

This is a ‘one size fits all’ approach and does not take into account the complexities of our modern lives. This can mean: • A widow may not automatically inherit all of her husband’s estate and vice versa • If you are living with your partner, but not married, you will not benefit. The rules of intestacy do not recognise ‘cohabitating partnerships’ • Your step-children will not be entitled to the same inheritance as your birth children/adopted children • Your inheritance tax bill may be larger, which will mean less for your loved ones

What is an LPA? A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), is a convenient and powerful legal document which gives legal authority to another person (an attorney), to make decisions, in your best interests, and take action regarding your financial affairs and/or future care.

There are two types of LPAs: a Property and Finance LPA and a Health and Welfare LPA. Together, they are designed to allow your attorneys to deal with all aspects of your life. As this is such a large responsibility, it is recommended that you appoint two to three attorneys that you trust fully.

Parental Responsibility

What is parental responsibility?

How do I acquire PR?

Parental responsibility (“PR”) effectively means all the rights, duties, powers, responsibilities and authority which by law a parent of a child has in relation to the child and his property.

PR gives a parent/guardian the right to have a say in major decisions made on behalf of a child including, but not limited to, what school they attend, whether their name can be changed and medical decisions. PR also gives a parent/guardian the need to consent to another parent/guardian taking the child on a foreign holiday.

PR can be acquired in one of three ways: • By re-registering a child’s birth to add the father to the birth certificate upon which the father will acquire PR; • By the child’s father entering into a parental responsibility agreement with the child’s mother.

The agreement must be signed and witnessed by a court officer at a family court. Once the agreement has been signed, it must be filed at the Central Family Court.

• By applying to the court for a PR order. An application can be made as a standalone agreement or in conjunction with an application for a Child Arrangements Order.

Do I have PR? PR is given to a child’s mother automatically.

However, for a child’s father, this is slightly more complicated.

A child’s father will have PR if the child was born after 1 December 2003 and is named on the birth certificate of the child.

A child’s father will also have PR if he is married to the child’s mother when the child is born. If a child’s father is not married to the child’s mother but, following the child’s birth, marries the mother, he will acquire PR. 24 JUNE 2019

How do I give PR to a step-parent?

PR can be given to a step-parent by the child’s parents agreeing to enter into a step-parent PR agreement. This must be signed by all parties with PR. The agreement must be signed and witnessed by a court officer at a family court. Once the agreement has been signed, it must be filed at the Central Family Court. www.cwj.co.uk

They charged Year 7 to 9 pupils to sleepover, organised entertainment, pizza takeaway, refreshments and supervision – great fun was had by all but not a huge amount of sleep!

“From their £10 the ‘Sixtons’ raised £813 in total in just 4 weeks and learnt a great deal in the process” Half the profits will go to Babington’s trip and outings fund, and the other half reinvested in the Student Enterprise Scheme.

What has become known as “The Sandbanks Weekend” or “The Sandbanks Festival in the sporting and social calendar of the South Coast of England continues to attract the crowds year after year.

Curiosity brought people to watch high quality beach polo at Sandbanks for the first few years but since then the parties, hospitality, fashion shows and now a beach rugby element, not to mention the Sandfest music festival on the Sunday, has kept the audience guessing and wanting more.

Putting Understanding of Dementia into Action T

he Cinnamon Care Collection’s flagship care home - Emerson Grange in Hextable gave residents’ families and members of the local community an insight into what it feels like to live with dementia by inviting them to step inside a Dementia Tour Bus for an immersive ‘dementia experience.’

Dementia is caused by diseases that affect the brain - the most common is Alzheimer’s but others include vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and Pick’s disease. Different types of dementia affect the brain at different rates and in different ways and will progress in a way that is unique to each individual.

The word ‘dementia’ describes a set of symptoms which may include memory loss but also difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These changes are often small to start with, but for someone with dementia they can become severe enough to affect daily life. A person with dementia may also experience changes in their mood or behaviour.

Emerson Grange invited training company Training2Care to bring along their dementia bus to provide participants with the opportunity to feel what it’s like to live with dementia. The ‘dementia experience’ involves wearing adapted gloves to make it awkward to touch and handle items, glasses to impair vision, shoes that made walking uncomfortable and a device to inhibit hearing.

Participants were also given the chance to take part in a Dementia Friends information session which is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative to help

people learn more about the condition and turn that understanding into action.

Over 2.5 million people in the UK have become Dementia Friends and each person learns that they can make a real difference to peoples’ lives. After the session a local Hextable resident commented “The Dementia Friends session I attended today was fascinating and so many of the messages struck a real chord for me in relation to my Mum – it was actually quite emotional! I now need my brother to come along so we both know how we can support her!”

Cover up “Wear a hat as often as possible in the sun or, if you have longer hair, wear it in a bun so that much of the hair is covered,” says Capewell.

“If you’re spending time in the pool, wet your hair in the shower before you go for a swim. This ensures that the hair is saturated with unchlorinated water first. “Oh, and be sure to rinse your hair before you settle back down on your sunbed.”

SPF for your strands “In the same way you change your skincare in the warmer months, the same should apply for your haircare,” says Belle Cannan, co-founder of Salon Sloane. “Like with our skin, the sun can also damage our hair and scalp, so I advise my clients to use styling products with an SPF for extra protection as the weather heats up. Try Co-washing “To keep your hair extra moisturised, why not try co-washing?” says Cannan. “This means occasionally skipping shampoo and only using a conditioner to keep hair super-hydrated. Or, if you’re not willing to part with your favourite shampoo, add in a deep conditioning treatment once a week to lock in moisture.”

Down your tools “If you’re using heated styling tools in the evening, pop them on a lower heat as it’s less harsh and intense to the hair - a higher heat opens the cuticles, allowing essential moisture to escape,” Capewell

says. “Heat protectants, conditioning sprays and leave-in conditioners are also great, as they behave as a barrier between the hair and the heat, and restore lost moisture.” Tarver thinks you should go one step further: “Do your hair a favour, give it a holiday away from the intense heat and leave your straighteners at home.”

Soothe your scalp If, despite your best efforts, you do catch the sun and end up with a flaky scalp, coconut oil is the answer, Tarver says. “Slather it on, rub it in and leave it on for an hour or more. When you wash your hair, the scale should just lift off. Shampoo your hair twice to remove the oil and clear your scalp of flakes. Combing through your conditioner before and during rinsing also helps to remove flakes from your hair.”

Osteopathy was developed 130 years ago by physician A.T. Still(Pettman2007). Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions.

Osteopathy is a primary care profession focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders.

Commonly treated conditions include back, neck and shoulder pain, upper and lower limb problems, neck related headaches, minor sport and workrelated conditions and arthritic pain.

Osteopaths employ techniques to restore mobility, function and blood flow to help the body to heal itself. Most will incorporate soft tissue, joint mobilisation; spinal and peripheral joint manipulation and neuro-muscular procedures.

Treatment does not target symptoms only but also addresses the parts of the body that have caused the symptoms. Osteopaths take a holistic approach and believe that the whole body will work well if it is in good structural balance.

To qualify as an osteopath requires at least

four years’ study for an undergraduate degree.

This is similar to a medical degree, but with a greater emphasis on anatomy and musculoskeletal medicine. It includes more than 1,000 hours of training in osteopathic techniques. After graduation, osteopaths are required to complete continuing professional development (CPD) courses to retain their registration.

Patient safety is of paramount importance; by law, osteopaths must register with the General Osteopathic Council and it is an offence for anyone to use the title if they are not registered.

Osteopaths are skilled in diagnostic techniques and trained to identify when a patient needs to be referred to a GP. During your first visit a full history will be taken on your presenting complaint, questions on your medical and family history will be asked along with lifestyle, occupation, sporting and leisure activities that you do regularly.

A physical examination is always carried out. This involves looking at the body as a whole rather than just the area causing pain or discomfort. Observation and palpation (hands-on) of tissues will identify areas of restriction and weakness. You will be asked to carry out a series of simple movements so comfortable, loose clothes and appropriate underwear is requested (a pair of shorts can be worn over your underwear, if preferred).

The results of the physical examination and a working diagnosis will be explained to you along with a proposed treatment and management plan prior to treatment commencing.

Further Consultations: Some patients only need one appointment whilst others may have a course of treatment or will return periodically. Treatment is determined according to patients’ progression rather than a prescriptive number of sessions.

the Canham’s Neptune kitchen

W

hat was once a cow shed and haybarn has now been converted into a bright, modern home with an uplifting, classic-meetscontemporary kitchen, designed by Neptune Tonbridge, at its heart.

When you’re about to embark upon a kitchen renovation, one of the biggest set of decisions you’ll face is which company to work with on the design of your kitchen, whether to have it made by them or by a carpenter and joiner, and which builder should install it. But when Jonathan and Suzy Canham moved into their barn conversion home in the Kent parish of Frittenden, they opted for a local brand that specialised in all three areas and would be able to create a kitchen design unique to their home, to make it using natural timber and traditional joinery, and to fit it all too with a reassuring Lifetime Guarantee as a parting gift.

Designing the Canham’s kitchen “The kitchen was very small,” explained Jonathan Canham. “It was split over two levels with a separate utility room. We lived with it for the first year or so, but we were desperate to make it a nicer space to live in.”

Before the Canham’s even started thinking about cabinetry, they decided with the help of their architect friend and Neptune kitchen designer, Vicky, that they should remodel the space, taking down walls to open up the room. Vicky helped them to envisage the bigger picture, advising them at every stage of the project so that not only would their kitchen be aesthetically more pleasing, but it would become a space that was easier and more enjoyable to spend time in every day.

When it came to deciding on how they wanted 60 JUNE 2019

their kitchen to look though, they knew immediately want they wanted. “We walked into Neptune Tonbridge and fell in love straight away with Chichester,” said Suzy. “We also loved Suffolk and the sleekness of Limehouse, but for us, we felt Chichester was the perfect compromise between tradition and today. I was particularly drawn in by the layout and colour of the Chichester kitchen they had on display.”

Everybody has items on their wish list when they decide to get a new kitchen. On Jonathan and Suzy’s was a kitchen island in a different colour to the main cabinetry, a larder, and Neptune’s Cranbrook shiplap panelling for adding texture to their walls. “We got all of that, and I actually got two larders,” said Suzy.

The Canham’s also made the most of Neptune’s bespoke workshop based in their Wiltshire HQ. “There were so many workarounds,” commented Vicky, one of the kitchen designers at Neptune Tonbridge. “I designed bespoke pieces to conceal the fuse box and boiler, and adapted the larders and cooker surrounds too. Jonathan is 6ft 7in tall and does about 90% of the cooking [his statistic not mine!] and so I needed to make sure everything worked with the room but also for them as a family.

We also chose a marble-like quartz work surface so that it was practical and hassle-free to live with, carrying it up behind the hob to act as a splashback.

It has a polished finish so reflects the light beautifully and is a subtle way to make the room feel bigger.”

When asked how to describe their Neptune kitchen renovation, Jonathan used the word ‘perfect’, while Suzy said quietly, “the whole thing has been a bit of a dream actually.”

This holds true if the wrong glass specification is advised. Pretty in Pink

O

nce cast aside as ‘girly’, the colour pink is fast shaping up to be the hottest shade for interiors.

Sugary pinks through to snazzy scarlets, pretty peaches and even funky neons are the winning shades on the palette this season.

“Don’t make the mistake of thinking that pink is just for girls. Not any more it isn’t,” declares Emily Murray, creator of award-winning blog, The Pink House, which celebrates the colour in all its hues in her own pink decorated home.

It’s been such a success since she started it three years ago (she has more than 60,000 followers on Instagram) that her new book, Pink House Living: For People Cheating On Fashion With Furniture, was a natural follow-on. It’s a brilliant guide to seeing the world through ‘rose-tinted’ decor spectacles. Stepping inside her home is proof of pink’s magic - she shows me around rooms which ooze personality, thanks to the magical touches of her “all-time favourite colour”.

Pink painted walls, a pink kitchen island, neon pink signs, splashes of pink to highlight period features, as well as an array of punchy pink accessories, are just some of the ways in which the colour has a starring role in her schemes.

Yet with her skill and sense of style, she makes it sing - rather than dominate or shock - in her Edwardian semi, and this uber-cool interior leaves you wondering why you’ve never thought of using pink more. The mother-of-two is always hot on the trail of perfect pink homes, and her book features an array of brilliant pink settings from around the world, as well as her own rooms.

Even she’s surprised her own pink passion is so widely shared. “I’d underestimated the power of pink. It turns out it’s incredibly popular on every level and in every way. We love pink,” says Murray delightedly. “We love it on front doors, on walls and on rugs. We love it on Instagram, in magazines and in fabric charts. We love it in barely-there blush, fuchsia and neon.”

For those fearing a pink overload, she stresses that embracing the shade “doesn’t mean I like all my rooms dressed in floor-to-ceiling fuchsia... Even when I have free rein to decorate exactly as I chose, I exercise pink restraint. “For me, the key to making the most of this joyous colour - for I fully believe that pink has an amazing power to make people happy - is using it in moderation.”

In the living room, her dream was fabric walls, saturated colours, pattern clashes, loads of luxe and plenty of pink. “My aim was to turn a north-facing space into a cosy place for cuddling up in the evenings, but with a rock and roll twist.”

She’s achieved it with a “pink ‘play’ neon sign - a copy of my own handwriting - made to order”, as well as a cocktail bar created from a corner cabinet upcycled in green and gold leaf. Hidden LED light strips give it the impression of glowing from within.

For those who fancy taking the plunge, she advises: “If you want more colour at home (it doesn’t have to be pink) simply choose your favourite shade and go for it.

“Make a scrapbook or Pinterest board of settings with colourful decor which naturally attracts you.

You don’t need to design the whole room at once - start with a piece of art or wallpaper and then slowly add further changes, so a room develops.”

“There are so many ways to use pink,” adds Murray. “You can accentuate a particular architectural feature, piece of furniture or art work, and sometimes simply use it to allow another gorgeous colour to shine.”

Stressbusting Surrey garden collaboration wins coveted silver-gilt medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

elebrating success at the UK’s most anticipated horticultural event of the year, the Silent Pool Gin Garden wins a prestigious silver-gilt medal at the Royal Horticultural Society’s world-famous Chelsea Flower Show 2019, where innovative design and horticultural expertise combine to showcase some of the country’s most exciting and inventive gardening feats.

Blending the passion and expertise of David Neale of Neale Richards Garden Design and University of Surrey academics Professor Tony Myatt and Professor Richard Murphy, the Silent Pool Gin Garden takes inspiration from plant technologies and the greening of inner city spaces.

Born from the vision to create a space that absorbs stress through scent, sound and sight, the garden also invites you to consider the making of gin, the inventive use of recycled materials and the power of plants to create energy.

Many of the botanicals used in the making of gin are represented in the planting and symbolised by a single juniper bonsai tree given its own floating shelf on the garden wall, while a striking hanging seat gives a nod to the distillery’s copper stills. A Perspex teal water wall etched with Silent Pool’s signature botanicals forms part of the garden’s feature aqueduct.

“With the help of engineering students from SurreyEARS (the electronics and amateur radio student society), intricately installed sensors orchestrate Tony Myatt’s natural soundscape, triggering sounds of birds and insects in response to environmental changes in humidity, light, temperature and wind. This, coupled with live electricity generation from the plant microbial fuel cells, has been a brilliant way to engage, inform and intrigue visitors, encouraging an appreciation for plants and the significant role they can play in wellbeing and sustainability.”

Ian McCulloch, Founder and Director of Silent Pool Distillers said: “By collaborating with NRGD and the University of Surrey, we were able to create a garden that truly engaged, informed and intrigued visitors in appreciating the critical role of plants to their own well-being, as well as the futures of others. This has been a truly exciting project and we are absolutely thrilled with the outcome.”

Elements of the garden will now be donated to Silent Pool Distillers’ chosen charity, Cherry Trees, which provides home-from-home respite care for children and young adults with complex disabilities in East Clandon. www.silentpoolgin.com

were perfectly cooked, the meat was melt in the mouth good, and a large sharing vegetable platter came complete with carrots, broccoli, red cabbage, and cauliflower. For dessert, our favourite was the Eton mess - jam packed with large fresh berries, meringue, and cream. In addition to pub favourites like beer battered fish & chips, burgers, and hunters chicken, there’s also a daily specials board so be sure to take a look if you visit.

Ambiance This cosy and friendly pub is situated in the pretty village of Matfield. With outside grassy play area for the kids, and another separate outdoor dining area, it’s perfect for a sunny day. Inside are low ceilings and fairy lights - a warm and welcoming place to sit and enjoy a drink, good food, and when we visited, live music.

Service Bar and service staff are friendly, welcoming, and fantastic with children. We were greeted as soon as we stepped foot in the door, and service was to the table for both drinks and food.

Food A pleasing pub menu with special nights like Friday fish night, and roasts on a Sunday with live music.

We started with tempura prawns served sweet chilli dip and a fresh salad garnish. For main, we visited on a Sunday so couldn’t resist the lamb shank and roast beef. Yorkshires were crisp and light, potatoes 94 JUNE 2019

“A friendly local family pub with great tasting food”

Drink Due to being a pub there is a well stocked bar with most things on offer, but in addition to this there was a good selection of different gins, and menu card offering suggestions of wines to go with the different meats and dishes for the roast. We opted for a glass of the Malbec as suggested to go with the roast beef, and it complemented it very well.
