Bugsy Malone- Directors Notes Having worked with young performers for over a decade I am surprised that I have not had the opportunity to be in involved in Bugsy Malone before. I think its popularity is heavily influenced by three strong characteristics of the show which were infused by Alan Parker (the shows original creator):
F
irstly Parker’s original Bugsy was written for young people to perform. Even now, although there are many more examples of the benefit of this compassion for young performers, it is often the case that we see young people performing works that were originally written to be performed by adults. Parkers intention, which would have been ground braking in 1973, was to put words and actions into the script imagining how a young performer would interpret it. Children have an inherent sense of play and drama that is key to great performance. Their ability to invest and imagine is often more robust than adults who are become cynical through experience. I think this consideration of Parker’s made for a simple yet dynamic script that appeals to the sense of play and joy in both the young performer and observers of all ages. The second characteristic that makes Bugsy so appealing is the sheer ridiculousness that is epitomized in the ‘splurge’: It’s a development on classic clown custard pie that. When we see it on stage, it must end up in someone’s face! With this Parker allows young performers to deal in an imaginary world of violent rivalry with a hilarity that isn’t without consequence. Namely everyone ends up in a splurgey mess! By the end of the show its clear that the escalation in ‘splurge’ attacks has resulted in a conflict that is unresolvable. The stage world and its characters all need a through wash. Something crudely humorous becomes poignant; conflict is messy and sometimes unresolvable, you will reap what you sow and possibly we could all take some time to think about how we treat each other and the damage being done. As Parker puts it in the final moment of the show:

The third characteristic that makes this show so popular lies in Parker’s generosity with the script. After the success of the film he had so many requests for performance rights that he wrote a specifically tailored stage version considering the breadth of groups that might want to stage it in future. But he went further; encouraging new productions to use their artistic ingenuity to solve problems, think up ideas and make the piece their own. In his introduction to the script he encourages us to ‘not be restricted’, be ‘flexible’, ‘use our ingenuity’ and ‘play to the strengths of the group involved’. He even suggests that new musical elements could be added and has left openings for interpretation and improvisation. He offers his script to us, not as a set piece created by professionals to be simulated by armatures, but as a collaboration that puts both armature, young, old, professional, experienced and inexperienced together as creative collaborators with him. I could argue that in my expense as a professional who works with young people and non-professionals that you can find more creative spirit, passion, commitment, heart and soul in armature work than in some fully professional productions. I think Parker sees this too and his generosity to let people have a creative voice with Bugsy makes it appealing. I don’t know where our adventure with Bugsy will take us but I do know that these characteristics of Parker’s ‘Bugsy Malone’ cry out to be answered by our company of young performers, Musicians and professional technical and creative collaborators, with equal amounts of compassion, ridiculousness and generosity. How will the family assets be divided on divorce? Typically all assets held in the joint and sole names of a husband and wife will be considered family assets which are available to divide between the parties. These assets typically include the family home, savings, pensions, investments and personal belongings. The starting point when dividing such assets is equality. The court will then assess whether an equal division would be fair when other factors are considered, to include the length of marriage, whether there are any children, the income and earning capacity of the parties, the ages of the parties and the needs of the parties. Once these factors have been considered it is not uncommon for there to be an unequal division of assets between parties. How will I support myself after a divorce? Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to apply for maintenance payments from your spouse (spousal maintenance). When assessing whether spousal maintenance should be paid, and if so, how much, the court will assess the income and outgoings of both parties. If you have a shortfall in your outgoings that your spouse could afford to meet, a court could make an order accordingly. How will I afford to support our children? A parent who does not live with their children

(non-resident parent) has an obligation to pay child maintenance to the party with whom the children live (primary carer). You can agree between yourselves the level of child maintenance paid, or you can make an application to the child maintenance service (CMS) for them to calculate what should be paid based on a number of factors. These factors include the gross income of the non-resident parent, how many children there are and how many nights per year the children stay overnight with the non-resident parent. Do we need the court to decide who our children live with when we separate? No, provided that you and your spouse or partner are agreed as to how your children’s time should be shared between you there is often no need for the court to be engaged. In any event, the court will only make orders in respect of children if it is necessary to do so. If a disagreement does arise between you as to how the children should spend their time, there are various ways in which this can be dealt with, to include attending mediation (either in the same room or separate rooms) or negotiations through solicitors. If neither of these methods result in an agreement being reached which both of you are content with, it may then be necessary for court proceedings to be issued. www.cwj.co.uk

The best events this Summer H
ickstead is to showjumping what Wembley is to football, or Wimbledon is to tennis. Its shows are among the most elite events in the equestrian calendar, and thousands of spectators head to the All England Jumping Course each year for the two international competitions – the Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting (21-24 June) and the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup™ of Great Britain at the BHS Royal International Horse Show (25-29 July). The showground is best known for playing host to some of the most famous classes in showjumping, alongside top class showing championships, scurry driving, side-saddle classes and arena eventing. How it all began Coming from humble beginnings, Norman Dunton had no alternative other than to leave school at 14. He lost his first job because he was too short and then obtained work as an office boy in a local firm of solicitors. Both the injustice of losing his first job because of his size and the work he saw carried out ignited his passion for law. After returning from service in World War II, he found work at a city law firm. Then, at the age of 49, and with a wife and family to support he decided to take the brave step of training as a solicitor. Tenacity and determination saw him complete his training through a correspondence
course while he still worked at his day job to provide for his family. At the ripe old age of 55, Norman finally qualified as a solicitor. However, the firm he worked for in London refused to recognise his qualification as he did not have a law degree from Oxford or Cambridge. Norman therefore decided to set up his own firm, working from home at times convenient to his clients, and Thomas Dunton was born. The triple-wire rig allows riders to experience breathtaking views at speed, adrenaline guaranteed. For 16-weeks the zip wire will let people soar above Archbishop’s Park with later opening times so there is plenty of opportunity to fly by wire after a stressful day in the office. Zip Now London will be open from midday to 8.30pm every day from May 22nd to early September. The event sold out quickly last year with
over 30,000 riders taking the leap, so booking early is highly recommended and 2018 will be your last chance to fly by wire. As if flying through London’s skyline wasnt enough, Zip Now London offers a new and exhilarating free-fall experience. The ‘Mega Drop’ gives riders a heart-in-the-mouth freefall before being lowered safely down to earth. The entire Zip Now experience lasts 40 minutes which includes a thorough safety briefing. Tell us first about the company. How did it start? Mark Wilkinson Furniture was founded in 1981 when Mark was commissioned to create his first fitted kitchen. That kitchen went on to become an icon of modern design and with it a new ‘English Country Style’ was born. Mark’s early work transformed what had been considered a functional utility space into a room with style, grace and personality. This was effectively

Kitchens are your main focus, but not your only work. Can you outline the scope of your projects? A handcrafted Mark Wilkinson kitchen is still what our clients request most frequently, however we are seeing increased interest in speciality multi-rooms. At their core, Mark Wilkinson clients tend to have a certain approach in common – they are looking for absolute luxury combined with character. Increasingly, projects encompass boot and utility rooms. We have seen a huge rise in bespoke, highquality walk-in dressing rooms too.
A clever kitchen offers clever storage. What are your most successful features? Storage is a hugely important element of any wellperforming kitchen and Mark Wilkinson Furniture is able to create any combination needed. From a myriad of wine racks and carousels and stepped shelves in wood, marble or glass, to butler’s pantries and sculleries, designs that are made to look beautiful and function perfectly are at the centre of the way we craft our kitchens. We often work on bespoke solutions made to fit exactly what a client needs. The pull-out Nespresso drawer that features in our Newlyn kitchen is a perfect example – it is designed to store individual capsules with minimum fuss.
What kinds of thing are you working on at the moment? Our client confidentiality clause is strict, so I can’t name names! A bespoke project in Saint Tropez for a successful entrepreneur particularly stands out in my mind at the moment. It is an absolutely stunning beach front property; the pinnacle of carefully considered luxury. It beautifully demonstrates the new paired back use of bold colours, dark paint finishes and timber stains fused with nickel and antiqued bronze hardware throughout. There is a perception that the Mark Wilkinson brand is very classic, but the reality is we do both with equal vigour: modern spaces and those with a more ‘heritage’ feel. Often, we fuse both. Clients still come to us for the true craft that makes up Mark Wilkinson’s DNA, but our team increasingly realises that with a contemporary final feel. We are seeing a strong trend in personalisation too. There are three new kitchen ranges. Can you describe them? Our most recent additions are the Portobello and Newlyn styles. Portobello is inspired by its ever-vibrant West London namesake, embracing clean lines and elegance with clever storage solutions and flexible workspaces. The Newlyn is stylish and contemporary with pared-back lines and natural materials that work perfectly for today’s modern lifestyles. Stand-out features include the waterfall worktop design and the latest baking and breakfast cabinetry. How does kitchen design work - where do you start when planning a project? Clients will regularly visit our showrooms with mood boards and other inspirational imagery. They often have an idea of what they do and do not like, and a general feel or look they hope to achieve - however vague at this early stage. It is then our job to work really closely with the client to better understand their needs – the kitchen must look the way they want it to, but it must also work the way they need it to. What have been your most unusual or difficult commissions? Every project offers unique challenges, like a recent commission for a totally black kitchen! The craft element of your business is strong. Can you tell us about that? At Mark Wilkinson ‘handcraft’ is our heritage, it is the essence of the brand. We do not churn out large numbers of factory-line furniture and I hope that is something about us that is well-known now. Each Mark Wilkinson bespoke piece is handcrafted at our Wiltshire workshop with meticulous attention to quality and detail, from the finest timbers and materials – we create furniture alchemy. What should you look for when choosing a care home for a loved one? ‘Care’ is key - select an environment in which your loved one will be looked after by experienced, caring individuals. I recommend you visit a prospective home without an appointment to see what day-to-day life is really like and to find the exactly the right match for the person concerned. We visited on a sunny Friday lunch time, so took advantage of the new seating area outside. Inside, the restaurant is a meat and wine lovers dream, with open kitchens and the smell of steaks cooking’, and a wall of great looking red wines.
Not only is there a great wine list, but Branded also offer cocktails. I opted for a glass of New Zealand Marlborough sauvignon which complemented the seabass, and was served from a very cute little carafe, in to good large wine glasses. Service Service was great - a friendly, welcoming waiter took care of us and kept returning to top up our water and check we were OK. He also helped advise on the menu, and told us about their plans for expansion in to the newly purchased shop next door.
Food Although known for their steaks, we were tempted by the set lunch menu which had a surprising number of fish options, and was a bargain at just £12.95 for two courses, or £14.95 for three. To start, I had the crispy duck salad - duck breast served with mixed salad leaves, pomegranate, tomato, and a sweet and salty oriental dressing. Flavours were well balanced, and the duck was incredibly tender and cooked perfectly. For main, I opted for the sea bass fillet served on a bed of wilted spinach with panfried baby new potatoes, capers, and a lemon sauce. Again, all was well cooked with good flavour, and very fresh fish. We also had food envy of other diners as we saw an amazing looking burger being served - we’ll definitely be back to try that, and a steak with a good glass of red one evening! 94 JUNE 2018
