Moscow City BalleT presents

Swan Lake

Moscow City Ballet’s interpretation of the world’s most romantic ballet, Swan Lake, is magnificently brought to life on The Orchard Theatre stage in February 2019.

M

oscow City Ballet was formed in 1988 by the late distinguished Russian choreographer Victor SmirnovGolovanov. Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, Moscow City Ballet is ranked among Russia’s most successful and extensive touring ballet companies and is an eternal favourite in the UK.

28 JANUARY 2019

The company’s distinctive style endures due to the dedication of Smirnov-Golovanov’s widow, Ludmila Nerubashenko, who has been leading the company for several years and officially took the title of Artistic Director in April 2014. Nerubashenko is keen to maintain the company’s ethos: “We do not plan to change the style of our company or choreography. It was our mutual project with Victor, I plan to carry on in his footsteps. Our commitment to the ideals of the 19th century Russian Ballet is just as strong as ever.” Having first toured the UK in the early 1990s, the

company continues to delight their thousands of fans in the UK by visiting these shores each winter, including an annual date at Dartford’s Orchard Theatre. Each performance provides a theatrical dancing experience combining artistry, technique, narrative and live music, attracting a whole new generation of dance lovers. When the curtain goes up, the costumes and sets are beautiful, colourful, and a feast for the eye, while the sublime dance performances are all underpinned by the dynamic vitality of a live orchestra. Of course the audiences flock to see the dancers, each trained in classical Russian style and keen to maintain the heritage with which they are charged. Principal dancer Lilia Orekhova joined Moscow City Ballet in 2008. Since then, she has performed many roles to great acclaim, including the prestigious dual role of Odette and Odile in Swan Lake.

individual take on Swan Lake; he always tried to keep the traditions of Russian ballet but was not afraid to add new elements to the choreography. The production is so dynamic, that it grabs the attention from the very start and keeps it to the very end. Is the production suitable for people who are new to ballet? Would children enjoy it? Of course! Because true love for ballet starts with love for Swan Lake. For more information on Moscow City Ballet’s performances of Swan Lake at The Orchard Theatre, Mon 18 – Wed 20 February, visit orchardtheatre.co.uk or call the Ticket Office on 01322 220000

Swan Lake is such an iconic ballet, known and loved the world over, does that put added pressure on you? For me each performance is a great responsibility. Swan Lake is one of the most well-known ballets and also one of my favourites. As a child I dreamt about performing in Swan Lake. What would you say makes your production stand out from other interpretations of Swan Lake? The Moscow City Ballet’s Swan Lake is first and foremost the fusion of drama, choreography and music. This production includes the 3rd and 4th act staged by Victor Smirnov-Golovanov and Natalia Ryzhenko. Victor Smirnov-Golovanov had a very JANUARY 2019 29

rom her earliest royal engagements, everything Diana wore was closely scrutinised. In this elegant exhibition at her former London home, Diana’s relationship with her favourite designers will be explored through a display of some of their original fashion sketches created just for the Princess. The exhibition highlights how she navigated her unique position in the public eye: learning to use her image to engage and inspire people, and to champion the causes she cared about. Eleri Lynn, curator of ‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’, said, ‘Diana, Princess of Wales, was one of the most photographed women in the world, and every fashion choice she made was closely scrutinised. Our exhibition explores the story of a young woman who had to quickly learn the rules of royal and diplomatic dressing, who in the process put the spotlight on the British fashion industry and designers.’ Don’t miss this extraordinary collection of garments, ranging from the chic Catherine Walker suits that made up Diana’s ‘working wardrobe’ and glamorous evening wear including the iconic velvet gown famously worn at the White House when the Princess danced with John Travolta. A new year at Trinity Theatre

L

ast month’s cinema broadcast of the multi-award-winning and critically-acclaimed Lincoln Center Theater’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I was the most successful theatrical cinema event of 2018 – don’t worry if you missed it, as it’s back at Trinity Theatre on Thursday 3rd January. Reprising her Tony-Award-winning role, “Broadway musical’s undisputed Queen” (The Sunday Times) Kelli O’Hara takes to the stage alongside Tony and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe in a “powerhouse” (The Times) performance. Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. With one of the finest scores ever written, The King and I is the greatest musical from the golden age of musicals. Elsewhere catch Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo in a screening of Antony & Cleopatra from the National Theatre (Saturday 19th January), as well as NT Live’s I’m Not Running (Thursday 31st January), a new play from David Hare, “the premiere political dramatist writing in English” (The Washington Post). Art critic Andrew Graham-Dixon explores the dark and dangerous life of Caravaggio in a lecture and book-signing at Trinity on Friday 25th January. Having spent over a decade piecing together the scraps of evidence left of Caravaggio’s life Andrew answers questions that have long puzzled scholars about the extraordinary talent inside this explosive, fated artist. Elsewhere, on Wednesday 23rd January, Trinity welcomes Rory Bremner and Jan Ravens, two of Britain’s finest impressionists, featuring personalities from Farage to Lumley, Diane Abbott to Fiona Bruce… and Jacob Rees-Mogg. Emergence, the newly formed postgraduate dance company from the University of Salford, visit Trinity on Thursday 7th February, presenting two original works, Sharon Watson’s And still I walk…, inspired by the women’s suffrage movement, and Joss Arnott’s When World’s Collide. Don’t miss The Elvis Years on Friday 15th February, an outstanding musical production which brings to the stage the incredible and compelling story of “the

On screen, there’s the sensational Freddy Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody (Tuesday 29th January), Queen Anne period drama The Favourite, starring Olivia Coleman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone (Tuesday 12th February), and The Old Man & the Gun, based on the true story of a gentleman bank robber, starring Robert Redford – rumoured to be his last film appearance (Tuesday 5th February). Smart moves for the Bank of Mum and Dad

T

he Bank of Mum and Dad continues to be a leading lender to those seeking to get a foothold on the property ladder. With house prices still largely unobtainable for many people on typical wages, over a quarter of home purchases are in part financed by friends and family, and an expected £5.7 billion of contributions made during 2018. One of the many scenarios which will prey upon the minds of parents when their child sets up home is that the finance they are providing may end in someone else’s pocket if the relationship breaks down. In light of the continuing need for parents supporting their children to get onto the property ladder, it is also alarming to note that there is an increase in marriage breakdowns with the Office of National Statistics reporting an increase with 42% of marriages ending in divorce last year. Whilst many parents want their children to be able to enjoy the security of home ownership and generally want to offer support in any way they can, such contributions (both loans and gifts) need to be protected.  So, how is this best achieved?

Recognise who owns what The first issue is to ensure that the ownership of the home purchase finance is clearly understood. Whether parents are lending or gifting the money there are legal mechanisms that allow you to recognise who owns what. In the case of loans, these contributions need to be recognised through a Trust Deed. For gifts, mortgage lenders may want evidence that the gift has no strings attached and that can be done through a Deed of Gift.

Formal agreement for pre-acquired assets Where pre-acquired assets are being brought into a relationship it is wise to consider some form of agreement between the parties. If a couple are not intending on marrying anytime soon they may consider entering into a Cohabitation Agreement. This agreement allows you to specify who gets what on relationship breakdown. Alternatively, if the couple are intending to marry and there are pre-acquired assets being brought into a relationship they may need protecting by way of a Pre-nuptial Agreement, especially in light of the rise in marriage breakdowns.    You should be aware that along with Cohabitation Agreements, Pre-nuptial Agreements are not legally binding in England, however a Judge is very likely to take such an agreement into account when looking at distributing the assets on divorce if the following can be evidenced: • The agreement was freely entered into; • Both parties had full appreciation of its implications; • There are no circumstances prevailing at the time 36 JANUARY 2019

it comes to be put into effect; • Both parties had legal advice on the agreement; • Both parties were in receipt of full and frank financial information concerning the other’s financial circumstance; and • It is fair to hold the parties to their agreement. Many people may view a Pre-nuptial Agreement as unromantic and on some occasions may prevent a couple going through with their marriage. Yes, it can be a difficult conversation however, with such large sums of parental money at stake, families may view Pre-nuptial Agreements as a necessity before marriage.

The Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair 22-27 January 2019, Battersea Evolution, Battersea Park SW11

T

he Winter edition of The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair, the first of three taking place in 2019, will raise a glass to the new year when it opens in Battersea Park. More than 150 dealers from the UK and Europe will take part, bringing a beautiful variety of antique and 20th century design drawn from sources around the world. Find unusual interior decoration dating from the early 1700s to 1970, by designers and makers from the British Isles, Europe, Scandinavia, the Americas, Africa and Asia. The breadth of choice is unbeatable, encompassing furniture, lighting, textiles, ceramics and porcelain, glass, natural history items, architectural elements, and garden artefacts and seating. Works of art from all periods to the contemporary – paintings, prints and sculpture – are an important element in the mix.

The Cocktail Hour – Foyer Display Inspired by fashionable 1950s and ‘60s nightspots, with a touch of deco glamour, the Winter Fair will present as its foyer display, The Cocktail Hour – showing visitors how to create a contemporary space for parties or a modern club room vibe. The Cocktail Hour will incorporate diverse seating, side tables, lighting and decoration of all periods for a fresh look, beautifully accessorised with 20thcentury cocktail sets and antique drinking paraphernalia. Bar carts and trolleys are still enormously popular, and stylish examples will feature, alongside cocktail cabinets, serving trays, champagne buckets and glassware. All items in the Fair display come from exhibitors and will be for sale. 38 JANUARY 2019

Current Trends As well as the eco-friendly credentials of antiques, buyers can see how easily the rich, lived-in patina of antique wood can work with modern interior schemes, complementing both soft and rich colour schemes. The warm tones of wood also work wonderfully well with patterned wallpaper without distracting from it. Painted antiques continue to be a strong theme at the Decorative Fair; their popularity has continued unabated since the Fair launched in 1985 and made its name as the go-to event for decorative pieces, and in particular painted furniture. Dealers continue to offer an unparalleled mix of fine and rare pieces with original paint and decoration from the 18th and early 19th centuries, alongside more practical everyday items presented in what the trade terms “country house condition” (i.e. retaining an un-restored state) that have been well-loved over the years, and thus retain a lifetime of character.

Find Unique Accessories The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair is also the perfect place to find a wealth of accessories: mirrors of every style, lighting from antique to mid-twentieth century table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights, modernist ceiling lights and crystal chandeliers. The finishing touch is as important as the furniture and buyers love the choice of collectables often presented by dealers in an inspirational fashion on their stands. Enjoy delicious home-cooked food and baking at The Kitchen upstairs on the Mezzanine.

THE SONGS. THE SOUND. THE STORY. Motown the Musical Celebrates 60 Years of Motown!

“Motown the Musical tells the thrilling tale of the man who broke barriers and fought against the odds to define the sound of a generation”

S

ixty years ago – on 12 January 1959 - a man with an unstoppable dream invented a sound that would be remembered forever. Motown the Musical follows the legendary career of Berry Gordy and the creation of his musical empire, Motown Records. The story begins with the young Berry dreaming big, hoping one day to make people as happy and proud. After a few years on Detroit’s automobile assembly line he sets his sights on bringing a socially charged, racially divided country together with music. With an $800 loan from his family, Berry founds a music making factory. Motown is born! Berry not only had a great eye and ear for talent,

44 JANUARY 2019

but he was also able to nurture that talent, helping to create an incredible array of superstars - from Diana Ross and the Supremes, to Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and many more. But with the Vietnam War looming and America at a cultural turning point, Berry realised the time had come to push for something bigger than he ever dreamed of: to make music that could get the whole world moving to the same beat. Motown the Musical tells the thrilling tale of the man who broke barriers and fought against the odds to define the sound of a generation – complete with the ups and downs of the personal relationships, the professional struggles, and – of course – the music that made history. Discover the story behind the beat that changed minds, touched lives and took the world by storm. Motown the Musical shows how one label and its roster of legendary artists created the soundtrack that transformed America and gave the world a new musical vocabulary – the Motown Sound. With over 40 classic songs such as “My Girl”, “Stop! In The Name of Love”, “Dancing in the Street”, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” played by a 15-piece orchestra, this explosive event is the next chapter of Motown’s incredible 60-year history. An experience you’ll never forget, celebrate Motown’s phenomenal anniversary before the final performance in London’s glittering West End this Spring. Shaftesbury Theatre. ust imagine this....You are walking back home from town when, without any warning, you suddenly collapse with a Cardiac Arrest. Seconds from a certain death, out of nowhere an off-duty PC and a FedEx van driver come to your aid and start performing CPR on you. These two good samaritans perform CPR for almost 15 mins until an ambulance arrives with defibrillator to restart your heart and a Kent Surrey & Sussex air ambulance flies you to King’s College Hospital in London. Very scary stuff ? Well, this actually happened to Francis on the 27th July this year in Reigate. After 10 days at King’s College hospital, he returned home having made a full recovery, thanks in no small part to the speedy application of CPR. Only too aware of the role CPR had played in his survival story, we at Heart Angels were honoured to be asked by Francis to go and teach him and his loving wife our special way of teaching CPR and defibrillator use, including our technology-advanced light-up mannequins and Virtual Reality Headsets.

Here are some scary facts so get prepared: • 1 70% Of Cardiac Arrest happens between 01-00 and 08.00 am I guess you’ll be near home, so get the person you share your bed with trained. • We sell LIFE GIFT VOUCHERS • 78 % of cardiac arrests happen to MEN. A woman’s heart is genetically stronger. Heart Angels are Europe’s most advanced CPR & Defibrillator training and supplier. Using state of the art mannequins that light up and virtual reality goggles we can teach to the highest standards. Using our Zoll defibrillators to show full on scenarios to give our students the confidence to step up if needed.

S

o you’ve got the dazzling dress. And the shoes. And the bag. Your new year fashion look is sorted and now it’s time for the finishing touch - make-up. But what’s the best approach to beauty when you’ve got a showstopping frock on? “A sparkly party outfit calls for beautifully applied, glamorous make-up,” says celebrity makeup artist Aimee Adams, who has partnered with Rapid White ahead of party season.“The top trends for this year’s festive season are incorporating metallic and jewel tone colours. So many catwalk shows for AW18 like Prada, Giambattista Valli and Preen showed embellished or glittered faces.” But Adams isn’t suggesting you throw on a face full of glitter. “The easiest way to glam up your look is to choose your best feature and highlight it with a bit of extra oomph,” she says. “For instance, if your eyes are your best feature choose a sparkly eyeliner pencil and smudge along your top lash line. This is an easy evening twist on your normal daytime eyeliner.” Metallic textures can also give a chic shimmery finish. “I love using a metallic liquid or gel eye shadow as they are long-wearing and really reflect the light,” Adams says. “To keep it simple I sometimes just use a gold or silver shiny lip gloss patted onto the eyelids for a wet-look finish.” The final touch? “Always make sure your nails and toes are on point as well, and manicured in a glam colour or glitter finish.” And right on time, beauty brands have delivered a great selection of sparkly and glittery goodies to their collections.

MAKING YOUR

GYM BAG MORE ECOFRIENDLY Save the planet while you sweat with Liz Connor’s pick of the best sustainable workout accessories

Y

ou’ve invested in a reusable coffee cup, you’re regularly separating your plastics in your rubbish and you’ve stopped splurging your paycheck on fast fashion. Now, if only you could be so virtuous with your gym routine. Working out is great for your health, but your quest for the perfect bod could be having a negative impact on the environment. Between reusable plastic bottles, throwaway wet kit bags and bargain priced leggings, there’s a lot you can do to trash the planet before you’ve even stepped foot on the treadmill. Thankfully, gyms are making efforts to change the conversation: Chains like Barry’s Bootcamp and 1Rebel and have all gone plastic-free this year - but there’s still lots we can be doing on a micro level. If you’re keen to get more sustainable while working up a sweat, switch to these green products to make your gym bag more friendly to the planet.

Lush Seanik Shampoo Bar This solid bar of shampoo does away with the need for the unnecessary plastic packaging that’s often lurking in most people’s toiletry bags. Made with seaweed, sea salt, jasmine oil and lemon, it has a refreshing citrus scent that’ll leave you feeling squeaky clean for the rest of the day. £7.50 for 55g, Lush.com

Vivobarefoot Primus Lite Women’s Running Shoes These barefoot shoes have no unnecessary padding or cushioning and shy away from thick, stiff soles you often get in most running shoes. As well as being good for your feet, they’re a better choice for the planet too, as they’re made from natural, recycled and bio-based materials. This pair handily roll up into a ball and can be tucked away in your gym bag after a session. £100, Vivobarefoot.com

Asquith Flow With It Leggings The clothing industry is one of the largest polluters in the world, second only to oil. If you’re worried about how your activewear is made, invest a bit of extra money in a pair of organic leggings, produced in sweatshop-free conditions. This pair feel amazing on and are blended with bamboo and elastane to keep them soft and stretchy. £55, asquithlondon.com

Chilly’s Reusable Water Bottle One of the easiest things you can do to green up your act is switch to a reusable water bottle. This one from Chilly’s keeps water cold for up to 12 hours and won’t leak in your bag. It comes in a range of cheery colours and designs, but we personally love the rose gold version. £25, chillysbottles.com

older weather getting you down? You’re not alone. Shorter days and darker evenings inevitably leave us craving a large dose of cosy and warm, inviting rooms to retreat to, which become comforting sanctuaries at this time of year. Need to feather your nest? Frankly, there’s no need for fuss or faff - just a few style tweaks, and maybe a sprinkling of room treats, will work magic.

Follow these six easy steps to snug... Snuggle up Scandi-style “I love that Scandi look, which is about pleasing the senses with calm colours that soothe the mind, and textures that you just want to touch,” says Nadia McCowan Hill, resident style advisor, Wayfair. “Go for chunky knits, soft sheepskin and natural wood. It’s all about adding depth of tones and comfort to this texture story. Don’t forget to add a scented candle - notes of cinnamon, clove and orange are seasonal - and play peaceful music. Sit back and enjoy the peace!”

“Turn up the cosy stakes in a living room by embracing exotic colour, for a carnival-style festive glow that’s fun and funky,” says McCowan Hill. “Rich, bright shades will bring warmth to any interior, and you can ramp up the rainbow effect with scatter cushions and accessories. A pair of jewel-toned velvet curtains will revamp a draughty window and are a great way of shutting out an icy chill.”

SPARE ROOM

an opulent choice, he notes, while a neutral colour scheme is unisex, and pale tones open up a space visually and will allow any additional little touches, from cushions to decorations, to star.”

SUCCESS It might just be a handy space for visitors but there’s no need to ‘spare’ the style. Follow Gabrielle Fagan’s

guide to gorgeous guest rooms...

T

he guest bedroom - or ‘spare’ - isn’t necessarily the most well-kept room of the house. If you’re lucky enough to have one, it’s probably either a dumping ground or used as extra storage space most of the year - meaning a mad dash to clear the clutter when visitors are booked in. (Relax, we’ve all got our guilty spare room secrets!) Hosting overnight guests? Transform a neglected spare room into a space that’s inviting and stylish. Give it a little TLC, splurge on new bedding and perhaps a few fun - or luxury - little extras here and there, and you’ll have it looking (almost) as fabulous as a boutique hotel room, but with homely touches too. Follow these simple steps to styling the spare...

Turn up the heat

Sleep like a log “Many people have no idea how comfortable their spare bed is, so I always suggest you ‘road test’ it to discover any lumps or bumps or comfort issues,” says Helen Johnson, from The Fine Bedding Company (finebedding.co.uk), which sells a washable Spundown range, including pillows and duvets.. “A new mattress enhancer or topper may be all that’s needed, which is cheaper than replacing a mattress but can mimic a new bed feel. Next, check care labels on filled duvets and pillows to see if they can be machine-washed at home. Feather and down duvets and those without guidance labels need to be professionally cleaned. Finally, give pillows and duvets a good shake before dressing the bed,” she adds, “to even out the filling and return their plumpness.”

Introduce hotel chic It’s the little things in life that count, and kitting out a room with a few practical items - like a mirror, a side table, or an extra chair - can make all the difference. Guests will feel comfortable and cared for, almost like being at a hotel. “A pile of clean towels (preferably that have been given 10 minutes in the tumble dryer on the day guests arrive, so they’re fluffed up and fresh) tied up with ribbon will help create an inviting atmosphere,” advises Johnson. “Fill a ‘just in case’ basket with essentials, like mini-toiletries, a toothbrush, hairbrush, shower cap - things that are all to easy to forget in the rush of packing presents and clothes. Provide a spare mobile phone charger and your home Wi-Fi code written on a postcard as well.”

Wow with wallpaper “Adding a feature wall is an affordable and easy update that will certainly deliver a boutique feel,” says Alex Whitecroft from iwantwallpaper.co.uk. “Wallpapering just one wall is often easier and quicker than people think - it can definitely be done in a day, and there’s no need to worry about patterns not lining up at corners. Less paper also means less money. Guest rooms need to make people feel welcome and appeal to varied tastes, so choosing wallpapers that won’t overpower an overall design scheme is good advice. Metallics are 66 JANUARY 2019

“Under-bed storage allows for lots of extra space in a bedroom, and a storage pouffe is another solution. Make sure they contain spare blankets or extra throws, as people can feel colder in other people’s homes, and don’t forget spare pillows,” says Sue Brodie, head of creative design at holiday homes specialists Willerby (willerby.com), who also advises checking that the room’s windows can open and testing radiators to ensure they work. “All rooms, no matter what size, should have a focal point, as this anchors the space - normally the bed in a spare room,” she adds. “Use colour or pattern behind the bed, so that it’s not distracting or sleep disturbing, and minimise the clutter for a serene and balanced space.”

Spoil the spare “If a room isn’t regularly used make sure it’s well aired and add a room fragrance candle or diffuser,” advises Johnson.“A new lamp, cushion or rug can be all that’s needed to give a room a lift and provide a touch of luxury. It’s all about making people feel they have a sanctuary where they can retreat and relax as well as sleep.”

It sounds appetizing, and it looks even more luscious in interiors! Every year in December, Pantone prepares something special for us - an announcement which the entire world of fashion and design awaits, as well as all those who know that colour matters. This time the Institute specialising in setting colour trends focused on a bold shade that is meant to remind us of the real and the authentic in a world where social media and technology set the rhythm of life. The naturally occurring, flashy colour allows us to commune with the amazing nature hidden in the depths of the oceans, at the same time being close to what we see on the screens of our

To facilitate the use of coral in everyday life - while choosing a wardrobe or interior design, Pantone has prepared 5 colour palettes that bring out the best in all of them. Among them, we find various combinations - from warm pastels associated with a sunset (the Shimmering Sunset palette), through psychedelic colours (Trippy), to neutral colours of the earth, warmed up by coral (Focal Point). Living Coral is a great choice for a child’s room - it attracts attention, but it does not vex or overwhelm, it also improves the mood and warms up space, encouraging carefree fun. This appetizing, vibrant and unpretentious shade will surely conquer many hearts and decorate many apartments, bringing freshness and vitality to any interior. ooking for deliciously fresh Turkish food with mouth-wateringly authentic flavours, amazing quality ingredients, generous portions… and all served in a welcoming, buzzy, convivial atmosphere in the heart of Bromley and Tonbridge? Welcome to Havet Restaurant. Our ethos is ‘fresh food, daily’ which means we’re dedicated to sourcing the very best produce available so that our talented chefs can create delicious dishes, bursting with flavour. Everything on our menu is freshly made according to recipes passed to us by our parents and grandparents and given a modern twist. Every dish and menu item is prepared under our roof using the best and freshest ingredients possible, every single day. We’re up early to go to the markets and bring home only the premium meats and top-notch fresh produce, just as our families have done for generations before us when preparing home-cooked food. Our expert chefs create meals that are abundant with all the amazing flavours of Turkish cooking. Combining the sun-drenched flavours of the Mediterranean with the earthy, delicately spiced dishes of the Middle East, we’ve created a menu that celebrates the best of our parents’ homeland. High quality ingredients mean great tasting food. Taking our cue from the success of meze dining, our extensive menu is flexible – you can tailor a meal to suit your tastes and mood, choosing your meat and your sides in a ‘pick and mix’ approach that our diners love. At Havet, you’ll find all your favourite Turkish, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern-influenced dishes and plenty of fish and vegetarian choices too. Choose from traditional

Turkish meze, mousaka, fish kebabs and perfectly marinated meats. Our kebabs are cooked over our traditional open mangal (charcoal grill). Havet is not about fine dining: ours is a busy, vibrant restaurant with a lot of atmosphere… and our menus reflect that. We may use the best of fresh ingredients and create all our dishes in-house without relying on mass-produced ingredients, but we achieve a balance between offering the very best Turkish cuisine, yet remaining an affordable place to eat.

How to host a

classic high tea

T

he high tea experience is a celebration of all things delightful and delectable, pretty and feminine. The tradition dates back to the early nineteenth century where Anna Russel, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford began the practice of hosting friends to a summery afternoon tea at Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire. Guests sat down to two meals per day, breakfast and dinner, and it is for this reason that forward-thinking Anna began the tradition of a light afternoon snack and a pot of tea. These days the high tea takes its cues from the duchess’s refined afternoon event and incorporates all of the luxury modern trimmings one would expect. The high tea is a fashionable affair, one that requires preparation and thoughtfulness. One of the most important things to consider is the weather no one wants to sit outside in the cold or rain, and if it is a lovely warm day, your guests want to enjoy the bright sunshine. The location for your high tea is therefore extremely important. We no longer limit our guests to simply tea and a dainty snack, but instead a plethora of food and drink options served in an elegant and sophisticated manner. High tea catering is all about finger food. People generally expect sweet treats such as scones, tarts, cupcakes and fruitcake. You may want to provide finger sandwiches - tiny triangles or dainty pinwheels, usually with the crusts cut off. Cucumber and cream cheese, egg and lettuce or smoked salmon are all great options.

Contemporary or classic? A high tea is generally a classically conventional affair, with a style of elegance. Will yours be a seated affair, or a more modern high tea where guests can wander and socialise with each other? The type of invitation you send will set the tone. An

e-mail invitation, for instance, indicates a casual get together. If you go to the effort of printing lovely, delicate invitations guests will assume a more formal tone. Make sure you include a dress code.

Choose luxurious tableware “A high tea is generally a classically conventional affair, with a style of elegance. Will yours be a seated affair, or a more modern high tea where guests can wander and socialise with each other”

For such a sophisticated occasion, ensure you have the finest crockery with polished cutlery and glassware for your guests. A table clothed in linen is stylish and practical - you can add colour with linen napkins, placemats and even a table runner. This will also safeguard your table from damage.

Have everything on hand To avoid running back and forth looking after your guests plan on employing a movable trolley. This guarantees all of your items will be in the same room and equally important you will be too. A good host is not one that isn’t seen all afternoon. You can have extra drinks and other essentials pre-prepared and accessible - ensuring you spend your time outside with your guests.

Background entertainment It’s important to have the right music to enhance the ambience. Play some soft music in the background - classical music is a great choice for a tea. If that doesn’t work for you, soft jazz can work really well too. You can also find an “Afternoon tea” playlist on websites like YouTube and on music streaming services like Pandora and Spotify. That would definitely be serving up a classic traditional dish with a very modern twist! 78 JANUARY 2019

VEGAN JAFFA CAKES

If you’re starting the year vegan, doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all your favourites. words: Prudence Wade

For vegans - or really anyone - with a sweet tooth, whip up a batch of your own ‘jaffa cakes’ from Gaz Oakley’s recipe - and then you can really settle into the age-old debate: Is it a cake or is it a biscuit?

Ingredients: (Makes 24) For the sponge layer: • Coconut oil, for greasing • 120ml soy milk • 55g vegan spread • 1tsp orange essence • 120g plain flour (can use gluten-free) • 100g unrefined caster sugar • 1tsp baking powder • 1/4tsp fine sea salt • 1/4tsp ground cinnamon • 1/4tsp ground nutmeg For the orange jelly: • 2tbsp agar agar flakes • 120ml cold water • 240ml freshly squeezed orange juice • 2tbsp caster sugar For the chocolate topping: • 2 x 100g bars dairy-free chocolate, finely chopped • Pinch of sea salt 80 JANUARY 2019

1. Make the jelly first as it needs two hours to set. Line a baking tray with cling film. Heat the agar agar and water in a saucepan over a medium heat. Bring to the boil, whisk until the flakes disappear, remove from the heat and add the orange juice and sugar. Whisk until combined, pour onto your lined baking tray and place in the fridge until set. 2. Preheat the oven to 180°C (360°F). Grease two non-stick muffin trays with coconut oil. 3. Put the soy milk, vegan spread and orange essence into a saucepan and set over a low heat until the spread has melted and everything has mixed together. Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and spices in a mixing bowl. Make a well in the middle and pour in the orange-milk mixture. Stir well until you have a thick batter. Spoon a couple

tablespoons of the batter into each hole in your greased tray. Smooth the mixture level, then bake for eight minutes until lightly golden. Allow to cool slightly in the trays before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. 4. Put the chocolate into a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water. When melted, lift the bowl off the pan, allow the chocolate to cool slightly, then stir in the salt. 5. Remove the set jelly from the fridge and use a round cutter (just smaller than the cake bases) to cut the jelly. Lift the rounds onto the top of each cake base, then spoon over the chocolate. Spread the coated jaffa cakes out on a plate and allow to set completely in the fridge. It should take about one hour. They will keep for two to three days in the fridge.
