The Canary Islands are an ideal summer 2019 destination, especially for ‘3G’ getaways. “Tenerife has a minimal flight time which is usually appreciated by the very young as well as older members of the party,” Ox says. “Plus, the destination offers great weather, plenty of hotels, lovely beaches and throngs of bars, restaurants and cafes.” Here you won’t struggle to find a restaurant that serves Paella as well as chicken nuggets, or somewhere that has a great ocean view but also has football on in the background. A well-rounded destination for all, be sure to visit Siam Park for a day of splashing fun and water flumes.

s an official war artist with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the First World War, Alfred Munnings painted equine subjects, portraiture and pastoral landscapes, documenting his time with the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and Forestry Corps in 1918. For the first time in a century over 40 of his original paintings are on display together at the National Army Museum, in the special exhibition Alfred Munnings: War Artist, 1918. Impressionist in style, Munnings’ vibrant brushstrokes capture the beauty of horses in the war-affected landscapes of France. Often painting less than a mile from the front line, and in full view of the enemy, he shows war horses on the march, at the charge, at work and at rest. These canvases demonstrate both the important role of mounted troops on the Western Front and the vital work behind the lines that sustained the war effort. Sir Alfred Munnings’ prominent career was largely established as a result of this work. He was knighted in 1944, when he was also elected President of the Royal Academy of Arts. On his
death, his ashes were interred at St Paul’s Cathedral. Despite these marks of distinction, he remains relatively unknown among the great artists of British history. The exhibition includes paintings on loan from the Canadian War Museum, as well as selected works from the National Army Museum’s own collection. A complementary programme of events including talks, workshops, tours and family activities are scheduled to run at the Museum until March. Are you considering a separation in 2019?
W
hile attention is focused on the country’s divorce from the European Union, and what the new year will bring from the Brexit bargaining table, many families will be facing up to break-up issues closer to home. Getting some advice before you make any final decision over breaking up, whether separately or as a couple, could help ease the path ahead, whatever you decide to do as a result. Communication difficulties and disagreements do sometimes arise because the only ground for a divorce continues to be the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage, with the associated fault-based reasons of adultery or unreasonable behaviour most likely to be given. The only way to avoid a fault-based divorce is by a period of separation of at least two years before issuing the divorce petition. It is hoped that this will change in the foreseeable future following a campaign by the group Resolution to allow couples to divorce without blame.
Some of the common questions raised at a first meeting are as follows; How will the family assets be divided? Typically all assets held in the joint and sole names of a husband and wife will be considered matrimonial assets which are available to be shared between the parties. These assets typically include the family home, savings, pensions, investments and personal belongings. The starting point when dividing these assets is equality. The court will then 32 FEBRUARY 2019
assess whether an equal division would be fair when other factors are considered, to include the length of marriage, when the assets were acquired, whether there are any children together with the income, earning capacity, ages and needs of the parties. Once these factors have been considered it is possible in certain circumstances for there to be an unequal division of assets between parties. How will I support myself after a divorce? Depending on the circumstances, a wife or husband may be able to apply for maintenance payments from their spouse (spousal maintenance). When assessing whether spousal maintenance should be paid, and if so, how much, the court will assess the income and outgoings of both parties. If one party is unable to meet their reasonable outgoings that their spouse could afford to meet either in full or part, a court could make an order accordingly. How will I afford to support our children? A parent who does not live with their child or children (non-resident parent) has an obligation to pay child maintenance to the parent with whom the children live. The parents can agree the level of child maintenance paid, or either parent make an application to the child maintenance service (CMS) for them to calculate what should be paid based on a number of factors. These factors include the gross income of the non-resident parent, how many children there are and how many nights per year the children stay overnight with the non-resident parent. School Readiness P
arents can often be concerned that children are not well enough equipped academically to start school. Provided the child is being supported if there is a weakness here, then this should not be the prime focus of school-readiness. Dame Tickell in her review, accurately raises this concern; “However, I know that some people interpret the term ‘school readiness’ as implying that children could be pressured to learn to read and write at inappropriately young ages.” This is not what school-readiness should focus on. I am sure we would all agree that the socially well-rounded child who skips into school, smiles, makes friends and enjoys their day will learn happily and effectively once they start school. Typical development must always be reflected upon. Children need strong gross motor skills before they can pick up a pencil effectively and these are strengthened through time crawling as a younger baby, climbing, catching balls, dancing and creating large scale movements. To skip these steps would do a dis-service to the child. There are many other aspects of school readiness that are equally important – academic skills do not have more value than good skills in independence, self-care and interpersonal skills. A child may be well-equipped in phonics and start to read, but these skills become “de-valued” if the child is unable to put on their own coat and manage shoes. Children who manage these skills are more likely to make a good start in school and expand quickly on the foundation they already have, without needing to learn about sharing, taking turns or sitting well to listen. Like all things in early years, outcomes are best when parents and settings work together. The parent is the primary educator and has a huge role to play in the child’s life. At home, parents can encourage children to help –with pairing socks, with preparing ingredients and cooking, and letting them dress themselves. Talk and read with your child – ignite their passion for the written word without the pressure of reading – learn poems and funny rhymes – create a love of books. Count everything – steps, jumps, claps, spoonfuls of dinner and look at numbers in the environment – house numbers, bus numbers etc. Parents also have a key role to play in supporting confidence and resilience as they know their child best. Gently widening the boundaries of what is comfortable often gives children a real sense of achievement – climbing that bit higher at the playground, trying new foods and having new experiences. Parents can also ensure their child understands the expectations of school – staying for 5 days, having a lunch, arriving on time and ensuring uniform is correct and they are well prepared “behaviour for learning” starts right from the very beginning of school life. It’s been off our radar for years, but it’s headlining again - Sam Wylie-Harris explains why.

espite being a huge success in the Eighties, Bojo (it’s new trendy name) has been banished from the limelight for nearly 40 years. At the height of its fame, we would glug back copious amounts of gamay (the Beaujolais grape), but with changing tastes in the Nineties and a swing to punchy New World wines, this fruity, light red rapidly fell from grace. Happily, however, Beaujolais is back. But why the change of fortune and what’s the big deal?
The 2018 vintage is one of the best This year’s vintage has been cited as one of the best in 50 years. The hot, dry summer has resulted in an extremely high-quality harvest, which translates into a lip-smacking crowd-pleaser. Try Morrisons Beaujolais Nouveau 2018, £6, which is back on the shelves for the first time in 20 years and available in more than 300 stores across the UK.
It’s bang up to date Our tastes are changing and we’re not so thirsty for high-impact wines. “We’re expecting this Beaujolais to be the best for many years. More complex wines can be paired with richer foods, such as crispy black pudding.
They need to be drunk young There’s no ageing potential with Beaujolais, and even though there’s a serious side and more depth of flavour to the crus, they don’t have the potential to improve with age.
