W
hat can audiences look forward to about Tango Moderno? Flavia says, ‘It’s lots of different stories about people who meet and fall in love.’What is it about the tango in particular that continues to inspire you? Vincent says, ‘The music. Not many people can feel the tango – it’s a gift that you either have or you haven’t. We hear a tango and we’re in awe of the music. We feel it and you can see that in our dancing. It’s not just a routine, it’s a passion that comes from inside.’Why do you think dance shows continue to be so popular, both in the West End and around the country? Vincent says, ‘Dance is an art and it can inspire feelings in you – it can make you laugh, it can make you happy, it can make you sad. I always say our shows have to be a rollercoaster of emotions. Flavia says, ‘It’s about being transported into another world. People can come along for 20 FEBRUARY 2018
two hours and forget about their lives and their problems and just enjoy great music and great dancing.’What do you most enjoy about working together? Vincent says, ‘We share the same passion and we know how our bodies work together. We know exactly what we’re capable of doing together. Our director Karen Bruce has worked with us for the last seven years and she knows our strengths, and we have an amazing creative team.’ Flavia says, ‘We’re also quite versatile. We do ballroom, we do Latin, we do Argentine tango, so with a lot of the routines we do we tend to fuse things together. Kidnap Can Be A Murderous Game
Cast members of Middle Ground Theatre Company take time out of rehearsals of Ruth Rendell’s thriller, Gallowglass, to tell us about the show, which comes to The Orchard Theatre, Dartford this March.
Can you tell us about Gallowglass? Richard Walsh (London’s Burning) says, ‘It’s a Barbara Vine (Ruth Rendell), although when she writes as Barbara Vine they’re always a little bit darker, a little bit more psychotic I think. It involves this young man who was once involved in a kidnapping of a very famous young model in Italy she comes back to live in England and he’s become obsessed with her during this time.’ What attracted you to this production? Paul Opacic (Bad Girls/Emmerdale/Hollyoaks) says, ‘Well it’s a Ruth Rendell which is always good because she’s a great writer! All the characters are well rounded and they’ve all got a complex history. There are lots of layers to (my character) Paul Garnett; he was in the armed forces but became a teacher and is now a single dad looking after his child. It’s a nice character to play as he’s as hard as nails but educated and sensitive.’ Dean Smith (Waterloo Road) says, ‘I like thrillers, I like audiences to be sat on the edge of their seats, and I like people to be in the crowds trying to figure out what’s going on. The last show that I did with Middle Ground was an Agatha Christie murder mystery and it was lovely hearing people’s theories on who they thought the murderer was.’ How did you feel about Gallowglass when you read the script for the first time? Karen Drury (Brookside) says, ‘I loved it - it isn’t a story I know, so I didn’t know what was going to happen when I first read the script. I think the author has pulled some very interesting, dark psychological aspects out of it and it’s also quite moving. Of course it explores the stability of people’s minds. I think the script is much better than the book.’ Dean says, ‘When I read Gallowglass I hadn’t read the book or seen any of the adaptation for T.V.

or film, so I just read the Middle Ground script - I had no idea what was going on and every revelation dragged me though the next three or four pages just to find out! It seemed like a really ambitious project and Joe is a character I really wanted to play.’ What are you most looking forward to about the Gallowglass tour? Richard says, ‘I’ve done a lot of touring and been to a lot of theatres again and again, so I enjoy going to new places.’ Paul says, ‘The best thing about this is that it is such a good piece. The cast are great as well, we’ve got some terrific younger actors for whom this is their first tour, so it’s going to be quite exciting to see how they get on. It’s quite exciting in that respect, it’s a good piece, it’s a great cast and it’s a very technical show, so when it all comes together it’s going to be terrific! I’m really excited about this one.

THE JUNGLE BOOK After successes including ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ and ‘Running Wild’, Children’s Touring Partnership alongside Royal & Derngate, Northampton are delighted to be bringing a brand-new adaptation of ‘The Jungle Book’ to Bromley in February 2018
S
usan Elkin visited rehearsals to speak with the creative team including writer, Jessica Swale, composer Joe Stilgoe and director Max Webster to get their take on readapting this renowned classic. “The original 1894 book was a collection of short stories set in India” says acclaimed director Max Webster, “our challenge is to refresh a story so well loved by generations, and bring it to a contemporary audience.” Olivier Award winning playwright Jessica Swale admitted “I hadn’t read the book since I was a child, so it was exciting to return to it and consider how it might still be relevant to a contemporary audience. I think culturally we associate The Jungle Book with Disney, but of course, it is Rudyard Kipling’s book that is the original. So I went back to the source material and found a treasure trove of characters in Kipling’s poetic prose. The challenge was to find a modern voice for it- especially in its politics. I wanted to refocus the tale to celebrate diversity- to talk about the challenge of growing up in a place where you may feel you don’t belong, and how we negotiate that.” Jessica’s recent successes include Nell Gwyn and Blue Stockings, alongside a growing body of film work, but she is excited to be getting

back to her theatrical roots, “by being in a room of actors, playing and experimenting. So much of the life of a play comes from the performers. That’s why I’ll always come back to the theatre- I love the movies but the live, collaborative nature of theatre is like soul food to me”. Moreover, she believes passionately in “the power of theatre to bring families together.” “Being a collection of short stories” says Jessica, “I chose two which I felt we could use to say something inspiring about community and compassion, about immigration and unity, in language which is lighter and brighter than Kipling’s (sometimes verbose) poetry. It needs to trip from the actors’ tongues. And it should be funny. I wanted to ensure that we never lose the sense of being in the jungle because that’s what people come to see, so I pretty much disposed of the Man Village. I wanted to convey a message about diversity, but in a light hearted and enjoyable way.” There have been many adaptations of The Jungle Book, so what makes this one different? “We wanted to take the story everyone knows and loves, and make it modern, playful, upbeat and to make it resonate with today’s audiences.” Max explained. Internationally renowned songwriter Joe Stilgoe was bought in to develop a brand-new original score for the production and was originally commissioned to write just four songs, “it’s become a bit of a joke between the three of us, because now there are twelve”, he grins, admitting that he really wanted, “a song for everyone.” He goes on to say, “I’ve written all new music with a wide range of influences from all over the world. Our jungle spreads way beyond the confines of India, becoming a global jungle for everyone.” “Joe is a genius” Max tells me, “he kept coming up with more and more material that the rest of the team liked so much we had to include it.” Jessica adds, “Our Jungle Book is very emotionally driven, and it is coloured and lifted by Joe’s music.” Jessica and Joe have worked collaboratively on the lyrics for the songs, with Joe being inspired by watching scenes take shape during rehearsals. Joe is full of praise for Jessica, “She has written a
Jungle Book which is more appealing than any other adaptation I’ve seen,” he says, “It retains elements of Kipling and is mystical and lovely. When I read the script I could hear the style of the songs – variously joyful, sad, dramatic and dangerous.” Joe is delighted with the decision to use a talented Portuguese percussionist who, on stage throughout, provides a central musical focus. “The rest of it simply comes together through the skills of the cast, especially the five actor musicians amongst them. How brilliant it is to be, say, a convincing monkey and play the cello at the same time!” I asked Max about the directorial challenges which The Jungle Book presented. “Live music is always a challenge, but I was a musician myself and I love how it helps create an atmosphere for the production. When it’s integral to the action, as it is here, you have to rehearse with the music in place. You can’t in any way bolt it on afterwards, so we’ve had singing at every rehearsal.” Then there’s the issue of how to create the illusion of a large pack, troop or herd of animals on stage with only a small group of actors, “Well, not even a big company could recreate an entire herd of animals, you have to create impressions”, says Max, describing the show’s “infinite forest” and explaining that the cast take on many roles within the show. The word all three of these creatives use most often is “playful”. Max hopes he had directed a show which has “jokes, laughter, and joy” and plenty to say about the world today. am the Headteacher and I was initially inspired to become a teacher as a result of the holistic experience of my own school days, having been taught by many excellent teachers who brought enthusiasm and creativity to the classroom. As Headteacher, I ensure that I make time to listen to the pupils at Bishop Challoner and meet with them regularly. It is extremely important to me to meet the pupils in small groups over the course of each year whilst they enjoy cake and juice in my room. Since I interview all the 11+ entrants I am already a step ahead because when they join us I can remember their names and what they have told me. I also enjoy meeting them on a Monday morning for commendations to reward extremely good work and effort. The nursery children are adorable and they take time to feed me with treats they have made in cookery sessions. Bishop Challoner is a successful school where the pupils can be themselves and are happy. If pupils are happy they will thrive and be successful.

TPA Modelmakers T
PA Modelmakers have been leading the modelmaking industry since the early eighties. Located in Brenchley Kent, TPA was originally started by Tim Price. He was later joined by two other modelmakers who became business associates, the name TPA was born. They continued to build a successful modelmaking business focusing on many aspects including architectural, topographical and prototype modelmaking. In the early nineties Tim moved on from the business leaving his business partners to continue what they had all built. Fast forward to 2017 and the current partners retire from TPA. From this point Daryl Miles and Lou Preston both take over TPA Modelmakers. Having both worked free-lance at TPA for the past ten years, when the opportunity came to buy and continue the business they both jumped at it. Daryl and Lou have now been managing TPA for one year and business continues to be strong., Building on the successful ethos of the original partnership, TPA Modelmakers continue to provide the Tailored, Professional and Accommodating service which their clients have come to expect. TPA have worked with some of the UK’s biggest designers and developers including Berkeley Homes, Arup, BAA Heathrow and Derwent London. Daryl and Lou plan to continue the work of TPA for years to come and are hoping to get into other aspects of work whilst still focusing mainly on modelmaking. With modelmaking as a background of knowledge, TPA is also focusing on exhibition design and fabrication. Daryl and Lou found that when on-site delivering models that there was also a market for display plinths, bespoke furniture and displays. They have since worked on many exhibitions including an install of oversized letters at London Excel.

Daryl’s experience After graduating from Kent Institute of Art and Design in 2007, Daryl has gained in-depth knowledge and extensive experience in architectural modelmaking. Whist free-lance at TPA Daryl was Head Modelmaker for Ove Arup & Partners, a position he held for eight years. He worked directly alongside architects, designers and engineers. He soon proved his capacity to create models to the highest standard whilst keeping to deadlines in a fast paced environment.

Lou’s experience Lou studied modelmaking at Kent Institute of Art and Design, graduating in 2007. Before joining TPA Lou established his career as a freelance architectural modelmaker working on a wide range of projects for some of the UK’s most respected modelmaking companies. He gained a reputation for the quality of his work as well as his willingness to take on new challenges and learn new techniques. This has enabled him to gain a wealth of experience and a diverse skillset.

It’s time to let dogs run wild on walls and rampage over tableware and accessories. We’ve trawled the shops for the most gorgeous canine finds. Plain or small spaces, such as hallways and bathrooms, are great for experimenting with quirky wallpaper - like a doggie-dotted version. Ambiance
An open kitchen, and long, bright, flowing restaurant area that runs from the bar, and also upstairs, means that customers and staff are constantly visible - this in turn, meant that whenever we needed anything, service was swift and welcoming.
Allo Scoglio - perfectly al dente spaghetti coated in a velvety white wine, chilli, parsley, garlic and tomato sauce, with mussels, prawns, clams, and the freshest, most tender squid that I’ve had in a long time. For main, the stars of the show were the perfectly cooked lamb cutlets coated in a herb and dijon mustard crumb, with delicious dauphinoise potatoes, roasted vegetables, and a balsamic reduction. For dessert, we couldn’t resist the cheese board - Italian Fontal, spicy Provolone, Gorgonzola, and a creamy French brie, served with grapes, celery, homemade sweet pickled onions, and a good selection of crackers.

Scala’s menu offers the best of the Med - from Greek Kleftiko, to Italian risotto, pasta, pizza, and Spanish paella. We were transported to many different holidays and struggled to choose from so many great dishes. To begin, our favourite was a starter sized (although when it arrived it could have been enough as a main!) portion of Spaghetti

As soon as you step foot in the door of Scala, you’re greeted with a big, bold, impressive piece of art spiralling down from the eaves, to a modern bar area. We visited on a Friday evening when people were enjoying dinner and after work cocktails.

We visited on a Saturday night, and the restaurant was full, with a good buzzy atmosphere.
Service Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted with a dry ager containing hung tomahawk steaks with name tags against each of the different members of staff - a reflection of the humour and relaxed, friendly service
that we received throughout our meal.
Food As would be expected from the name, there are plenty of fabulous meat options on the menu… although more ‘cow’ than ‘pig’. Knowing that I had to go for the Tomahawk steak for our main after seeing them in all their glory at the entrance, I opted for a shellfish starter. A pretty plate of seared scallops arrived, served with crisp balls of black pudding bon bons, and a light pea puree with bacon crumb - the scallops were cooked well, and the different textures and flavours of the dish worked together perfectly. For main, the Tomahawk arrived beautifully cooked and presented- an amazing amount of melt in the mouth meat to share between two, and a lot of restaurant theatre with the long rib bone and fries served in a mini silver bucket. We had extra sides of creamed spinach, and devilled fried mushrooms that packed a little chilli kick. For dessert, we shared a jar of banoffee pie - a good firm biscuit base, with caramel, cream, and a topping of extra chunky pieces of banana coated in a little burnt sugar.
Drink I started with a Gin Garden - an apple’y, refreshing gin cocktail served with a wedge of apple on the side. To accompany our steak, we opted for a bottle of The Red Pig, Tempranillo - a Rioja’n style flavour, with a light finish.
