About the V&A photography collection

The Sir Elton John and David Furnish Gallery at V&A

&A’s long-term collaboration with Sir Elton John and David Furnish revolutionises public access to photography. Comprising a significant donation towards the museum’s recently opened Photography Centre with a focus on the contemporary, the collaboration offers opportunities to bring together highlights from the V&A’s world-leading photography collection of over 800,000 photographs, alongside The Sir Elton John Photography Collection. Sir Elton John began collecting photographs in 1991 and his collection is now regarded as one of the leading private photography collections in the world, distinguished by its exceptional quality and remarkable range and depth. From major vintage 20th century modernist works to cutting-edge contemporary images, the collection now holds over 7,000 fine art photographs. To make this collaboration possible, the V&A has worked closely with Rocket Entertainment along with Newell Harbin, Director of the Sir Elton John Photography Collection. It also includes photographs by the most exciting contemporary artists working today, from Cindy Sherman to Alec Soth and Alex Prager. Throughout their collecting, Sir Elton John and David Furnish have been keen to share their photography collection with the widest possible audience – a mission shared by the V&A. Their continuous philanthropic support of public institutions, and loan of key works to national and international exhibitions, has created new insights, dialogues and connections to further the study, enjoyment and appreciation of the medium. Sir Elton John and David Furnish’s generous donation enables the V&A to realise its ambitions of showcasing highlights from its extensive photography holdings, with a series of temporary 14 DECEMBER 2019

displays, new acquisitions and annual contemporary commissions. Opened to the public in October 2018, the V&A’s Photography Centre is situated in the museum’s North East Quarter, reclaiming a series of beautiful original 19th-century picture galleries. Designed to revolutionise the way in which visitors engage with photography, it displays vintage prints, negatives and contact sheets, alongside photographic equipment and archive material to tell broader stories around the history of photography. A new extension scheduled to open in 2022 will expand the V&A’s Photography Centre further to include a teaching and research space, a browsing library, an historic darkroom, and a studio for photographers’ residencies, offering new and exciting ways for visitors to encounter this diverse and dynamic art form. Entrance is FREE.

The V&A holds the National Collection of the Art of Photography. The museum has collected photographs since its foundation in 1852 and continues to collect today. The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) collection was transferred to the V&A by the Science Museum Group in 2017 and was acquired with the generous assistance of the Heritage Lottery Fund and Art Fund. The V&A’s collection encompasses the work of leading historic and contemporary photographers as well as publications, cameras and related equipment. What is Alternative Dispute Resolution?

lternative dispute resolution (“ADR”) refers to ways of resolving disputes without litigation. While the civil courts have been encouraging people to use ADR for many years, you do not need to have started court proceedings in order to make use of this increasingly popular way of achieving efficient redress. The most common forms of ADR are: • mediation, where an independent mediator helps parties to reach an agreed settlement, by adding formal structure to their communications which may have broken down; and, • arbitration, where an independent arbitrator hears a dispute, like a judge at trial, and makes a decision that the parties can agree is binding upon them. Unlike sluggishly expensive courts, parties using ADR are able to agree the time, place, and cost of their chosen method of resolution. They can even agree the rules. Such control makes ADR far less formal and stressful than litigation. Consequently, ADR is cheaper, quicker and, being consensual, often prevents escalation of arguments. Collaboration is at the heart of ADR and allows opposing parties to better understand their respective positions, which opens minds to compromise. It also allows for more imaginative forms of redress, unlike the courts, which rarely come up with more than the blunt force of awarding compensation. 18 DECEMBER 2019

There is no limit to the types of dispute for which ADR is suitable and it is commonplace in the breakdown of marriage, where a collaborative approach to life after divorce is widely acknowledged as aiding the process of healing, but this applies equally to all other claims. There are also official ADR schemes in regulated sectors, such as financial services, energy and telecoms, and voluntary ADR is on the increase in disputes between consumers and business. There is even a European Regulation for resolving disputes online using ADR. You do not need lawyers in ADR, but they can play an important part. In particular, if you are not sure what type of ADR to use, or you need advice as to your rights and obligations, then pick a specialist in that area. They will also help you to prepare for ADR by marshalling your records, presenting your arguments and helping you to engage with the other side. It is important to chose your mediator or arbitrator with care – they come in all shapes and sizes and you need to find the person with skills most suited to your particular dispute. Your legal representative is likely to have experience of different mediators and arbitrators and will know their strengths and weaknesses. Visit Emmetts Garden this Christmas for a slice of magic R

unning until Sunday 5 January, see a whole host of outdoor evergreen trees decked with festive decorations. This winter see some of the largest trees to be found at Emmetts Garden including a Blue Atlas Cedar, native to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and Algeria, and a traditional Christmas fir tree, filled with frosty snowflakes, stars and mirror decorations in a variety of warm and festive colours. For added atmosphere around the tearoom and woodland play area, the trees there have also undergone a festive makeover, perfect to sit and enjoy a takeaway refreshment whilst the kids enjoy the tepee, swings and brand-new mud kitchen. With the help of Tree Prestige these trees are showered in Christmas cheer from top to bottom for some neck stretching sights that merge with the expansive views of the weald of Kent. With several routes to choose from, this Edwardian hillside garden is worth a visit to stretch those legs, embrace impressive views and hear the

Inspired by folklore associated between fairies and bluebells, one of the annual highlights at Emmetts Garden, families can journey around the grounds and find hand painted fairy doors beside winter trees steeped in folklore. Featuring a Snowdrop tree, Yew, Holly and more, families can open these doors to reveal a fairy waiting inside. Inside the doors you can also discover the name of the tree and match it with a folklore fact featured on the trail sheet. Trails cost £1 each and are available from Visitor Receptions with a prize at the end of the adventure. Families can also post their thoughts on the trail in a new handmade festive postbox, made to look like the Emmetts Garden Discovery Cabin. Are you considering a separation in 2020?

hile attention is focused on the country’s divorce from the European Union, and what the new year will bring from the Brexit bargaining table, many families will be facing up to break-up issues closer to home. Getting some advice following a separation could help ease the path ahead, whatever you decide to do as a result. Claire Schneck, partner and head of family at Clarkson Wright & Jakes answers some of the common questions raised. How long will a divorce take? A straightforward divorce takes in the region of 6-9 months. The first stage of the divorce, the Decree Nisi can usually be obtained within 4-5 months. In many cases the divorce petition is issued when the parties separate so that the divorce proceedings can then run alongside the financial negotiations or court proceedings. There are sometimes reasons why an application for the final Decree Absolute is delayed. This may be to protect pension rights as the financial settlement has not been concluded. Will my spouse be entitled to a share of my pension? A Pension Sharing Order may be considered within the financial negotiations. The size of the share will depend on various factors such as the length of the marriage and when the pension was accrued. Full financial disclosure would need to be obtained before advice can be given as to whether the other party might be entitled to a pension share.

A pension can be offset if one spouse would prefer to receive (or offer) a larger share of the other assets such as bigger share of the equity in the family home. Is there a quicker way to settle the financial matters between us? Court proceedings can unfortunately take a very long time to conclude due to the strain on the court service. As an alternative to court proceedings the parties can agree to enter into ‘Arbitration’. Arbitration involves the instruction of a trained arbitrator who will adjudicate and then make 22 DECEMBER 2019

binding decisions on the issues in dispute between the parties. It is a private hearing. An arbitrator can be instructed to deal with the entire case or to deal with specific issues. What is the difference between mediation and arbitration? Mediation is a process whereby both parties instruct a mediator to try to assist their negotiations. This process is another way for the parties to resolve matters outside of the court process. If an agreement is reached within mediation this will be recorded in a Memorandum of Understanding. In mediation the agreement is not binding. An arbitrator’s decision will be binding and both parties’ legal representatives can attend in the same way that they would before a judge within court proceedings. How can I obtain parental responsibility for my child? Parental responsibility (PR) gives a parent the right to make decisions on all major issues concerning a child such as the school they will attend and whether they should have medical treatment. There are various ways in which a father can obtain PR for his child. The usual way is that he is married to the mother at the time of the birth or he is named on the birth certificate. If this does not apply and the mother agrees, a Parental Responsibility Agreement can grant the father PR. If the mother will not agree, a father can make an application to court for parental responsibility order.

Art lovers can look forward to unseen artwork by Jo Wood as well as personal diary entries and behind the scenes anecdotes; a one-off look at the biggest band in the world. Jo Wood says of her collection of unseen photographs: “I have always loved taking

pictures. Wherever I was I always had my camera with me. In the early days I used a Polaroid. Not long after we started going out, Ronnie bought me a ‘proper’ camera, and I took so many pictures that he started to call me the Shutterbug. These pictures are real and were never taken with a book in mind. They show the band off guard, without having to worry that it was another photo shoot. It’s about real life, on the road with a bunch of guys who happened to be in a fantastic band, all too often in the public gaze but more importantly away from it as well. rom miniskirts and hot pants to vibrant tights and makeup, discover how iconic fashion designer Dame Mary Quant launched a fashion revolution on the British high street. Over 200 garments accessories, cosmetics, sketches and photographs are on display, including unseen pieces from the designer’s personal archive. Inventive, opinionated and commercially minded, Dame Mary Quant was the most iconic fashion designer of the 1960s. A design and retail pioneer, she popularised super-high hemlines and other irreverent looks that were critical to the development of the ‘Swinging Sixties’ scene. V&A’s fashion collections include examples of her famous designs from across the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition explores the years between 1955 and 1975, when Quant revolutionised the high street, harnessing the youthful spirit of the sixties and new mass production techniques to create a new look for women. Quant personified the energy and fun of Swinging London; and was a powerful role model for the working woman. She popularised the miniskirt, colourful tights, and tailored trousers – encouraging a new age of feminism. The mini skirt would go on to become an icon of the time and spark a new creative scene in London and beyond. The beginning of the exhibition sets the scene of post-war London for the opening of Quant’s experimental shop Bazaar, on Chelsea’s King’s Road in 1955. It will show how her designs, often based on schoolgirl pinafores or masculine tailoring, brought an entertaining slant to fashion, soon noticed by fashion editors and newspaper journalists in the burgeoning media of the day. At Bazaar, loud music, free drinks, witty window displays and extended opening hours created a

‘scene’ that often kept going late into the evening. Young women travelled to Bazaar to enjoy shopping for ‘something different’ in a much less formal environment. Quant’s tiny boutique grew into a wholesale brand available in department stores across the UK and her designs made for chain stores and mail order companies in America. Dame Mary Quant said: “The V&A is such a precious and iconic organisation for which I have the utmost admiration and respect, and it is a huge honour to be recognised by them. It was a wonderfully exciting time and despite the frenetic, hard work we had enormous fun. We didn’t necessarily realise that what we were creating was pioneering, we were simply too busy relishing all the opportunities and embracing the results before rushing on to the next challenge! I am enormously grateful to so many talented people whose contribution to that ground-breaking, revolutionary and memorable era will also be recognised.”

urveying the AW19 backstage beauty trends, when it comes to nails, there were some bonkers but brilliant - designs on show. But at the other end of the spectrum, the catwalk nail gurus have given us some beautifully wearable options for autumn/winter, as have the new-season nail polish collections. Classic reds The mani equivalent of a scarlet lip, shiny red nails never go out of style. At Ashley Williams, manicurist Michelle Class made the case for a slightly longer nail length with rounded tips and a ‘true red’ hue, while at Oscar de la Renta, neatly filed nails were painted blood red.

This year, they’ve released four key palettes – Meaning, Creativity, Care and Play. Central to each chromatic composition is the shade ‘Tranquil Dawn’— a milky sage that oozes serenity. What started as a barn design pool house was transformed into what you see below after the client approached them, inspired by another building they had seen. This design is unlike anything Origin has built before and needless to say, both the company and the clients are thrilled with the results. As Origin do it all, they were able to work closely with the clients from the start, take on board their vision and come up with a design that was not only feasible, but one that looked great too. Everything about the pool house is unique, from exterior shape to the application of the cedarwood planks used vertically instead of a horizontal layout. The interior pool house boasts a kitchen area, changing room and bathroom facility as well as a stunning pool, contemporary sliding doors that allow the outside in and a virtual transparency to take account of the amazing surrounding countryside. This project, while different has proved that Origin’s years of knowledge and experience are second to none and

hoosing the right tiles for your bathroom needs some careful consideration. With so many varieties on the market, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Choose from ceramic, slate, glass and metal tiles, plain or patterned, large and small, smooth or textured. The options are seemingly endless. So, to help you through the decision process, we’ve put together some practical tips, making finding the perfect tiles for you bathroom, a breeze

CERAMIC OR NATURAL STONE TILES? Ceramic tiles are the most popular by a long way. They’re durable, their glazed surface makes them highly resistant to harbouring germs, they’re usually very easy to keep clean, and come in styles to suit every taste. If you opt for ceramics, the most important thing to be aware of is that they do tend to vary from lot to lot, so make sure all the boxes you buy are stamped with the same lot number. But if you’d rather try something different... Glazed terracotta tiles are hugely popular right now with the trend for Mediterranean style bathrooms. Good quality terracotta is not only gorgeously rustic, it’ll last virtually forever, but can be hard to find. So the cheapest option might not be the best. Natural stone tiles like granite, slate, marble and even terrazzo (composed of marble chips imbedded in concrete and polished smooth) are beautiful, distinctive, and luxurious. They’ll cost you though. And these materials tend to be porous, so you may need to apply a seal to stop the tiles absorbing water. Make sure you discuss this with the supplier before you buy. Glass, metal, and porcelain tiles look brilliant if installed properly – but that’s easier said than done. Unless you’re really a dab hand at DIY you might want to leave the fitting of these to the experts.

ADD TEXTURE AND INTEREST WITH BATHROOM TILES With the majority of bathroom suites being sleek and white, tiles are a great way to add texture and

interest into a room that can otherwise, look fairly clinical. If you’re talking floor tiles, texture is a must. It sounds like common sense, but many buyers are still seduced by lovely shiny tiles and then end up skidding all over the place every time the floor’s wet. Generally, the rougher the texture, the less slippery the tile when wet. When it comes to wall tiles, shiny tiles look chic and sleek and reflect light, making them a good option when in small or dark spaces. On the other hand, embossed tiles can be a smart way of adding interest to your walls and reducing starkness, especially if your tiles are in only one or two colours.

CONSIDER COLOURFUL OR PATTERNED BATHROOM TILES It goes without saying that white is by far the most popular colour choice for bathroom tiles. White tiles are fresh-looking, classic, and reflect light to give the illusion of a more spacious, lighter room. If you’re worried about the room looking too stark add dark or patterned towels and other accessories to introduce splashes of colour while retaining the clean minimalist look. Colourful or patterned tiles can be used to add detail here and there, or make a bold statement when used to cover the entire wall. They tend to look best contrasted with simpler bathroom fixtures.

SMALLER BATHROOMS LOOK BETTER WITH SMALLER TILES Generally, the more compact the bathroom the smaller the tiles should be, especially if there’s not much space between your sink, toilet, and tub. Smaller tiles will also require less cutting to fit around objects and make for a more flowing feel. If you’re lucky enough to have a big bathroom, large tiles give a sleek look with less exposed grouting in between. Borders or panels of smaller tiles can look fantastic in complimentary or contrasting colours.

Ambiance Trinity Kitchen & Bar is situated in an old gothic church that in the early 80’s transitioned in to a community and arts centre. It’s arched doorways and dramatic architecture provide a fantastic home for the dining area as well as a theatre, cinema and gallery.

Service The staff were welcoming and passionate about their home cooked food. There’s a long counter to order from, and food was delivered quickly and with a smile.

Food There’s a selection of homemade cakes, jacket potatoes, and a selection of hot dishes to choose from. We opted for the lamb moussaka, which was beautifully spiced and very tasty, served with a side salad and light vinaigrette dressing. And our favourite was the chorizo and beef burger, where the Chef had ground together the two different meats to make the pattie and topped with melted cheese, and served with chunky chips and salad. For dessert, we shared an indulgent slice of gluten free sticky ginger cake…and will need to return to try the amazing looking carrot cake!

ollowing on from the amazing success in their first restaurant situated in Purley, four friends (who called themselves “4 Locos”, which means four crazy people) decided to bring this amazing experience to Orpington. The four co-workers Noemi, Guillermo, Diego and Alessandro have worked together for the last 7 years and 2018 saw them bring together their combined skill set, passion for hospitality and vision to open an Argentine Steakhouse. Funded fully between themselves, the four friends managed to create an extremely successful brand within the hospitality industry. The response from guests was overwhelming. With over 90 5star ratings on TripAdvisor and the number one restaurant to dine in Purley they’d have had to be crazy not to share the experience. 4 Locos Argentine Steakhouse opened its doors to the community of Orpington on the 30th October 2019. Situated in the heart of The Walnuts shopping centre, a stone’s throw away from the Odeon Cinema, it’s the perfect place to head to for a bite to eat before a film, or a spot of lunch after a mornings shopping. Open 7 days a week offering Brunch, lunch and “á la carte” menus. The fresh and vibrant décor with its cool and calming colours creates a relaxed vibe perfect to

With a specially designed Kids Menu created to keep children entertained with colouring puzzles, it’s safe to say 4 Locos is extremely child friendly. The service style is relaxed, informal and friendly. Staff are trained and knowledgeable about the products in which they sell, extremely approachable and willing create a great experience for their guests. The dining experience allows the food to do the talking. The menu is mainly Argentine based with a strong focus on meat, which is all sourced from that Latin-American country. In the Pampas, the cows are all grass fed which ensures the quality is second to none. That’s why Argentine meat is considered to be one of the best in the world. All food served is prepared fresh daily. Everything on the menu is made in house and fresh to order. The diverse menu includes little delights such as homemade “Empanadas Argentinas”, which are traditional homemade filled pasties. It also includes dishes like the Free-range grilled chicken, cauliflower and chickpea curry & pan-fried seabass ensuring to cater to all diners. Not to mention the homemade divine desserts such as the Hot chocolate pudding. The burgers at 4 Locos deserve a paragraph to themselves. Food & Music That’s Good For Your Soul

ow do you build a business on a love of good food and a passion for music? In 2018, London based entrepreneur and hospitality authority Scott Buckle realised his culinary vision with the birth of the Orpington; a contemporary dining space complete with a vinyl record store and decks in the heart of Orpington high street. This irresistible blend of music and ‘home-cooked dishes with a twist’ has been a critical ingredient to the Orpington’s success, so where did the concept originate? “My Nan used to take me to a toy shop in the town. In that toy shop, they had a record counter. It would have been tiny. I remember it having an illuminated record sign in the window and a red booth-like counter. I was mesmerised by this shop.” The restaurant’s interior echo’s this retrospective feel; from the lit ‘records’ signage on the wall, the booth housing their record decks, the freestanding vinyl record shelving, through to the sleek, minimalist modernism of the designer chairs and sofas and bold highlights of tangerine furniture and feature walls. These design aspects immediately elevate your initial impression on entering the Orpington from just ‘another’ local cafe by day and restaurant by night into something cosmopolitan and in a class of its own. The food served by the Orpington enhances this perception further; Scott’s background working in the early days with Antonio Carluccio and, later, within the Bill’s Restaurant business has without a doubt influenced his vision for his own venture and the rapid growth of the Orpington. Working closely with his personable and efficient front of house team and his Head of Food, Ashlaigh Taylor, their move into evening dining in the summer of 2019 has been a smooth transition,

fuelled by local and broader regional demand. Ashlaigh’s restaurant career began at Jamie Oliver’s cooking school – come -restaurant, Recipease, where she started as their ‘deli-queen’ and quickly moved up to managing her own team within the flagship site. Ashlaigh then moved to Bills restaurants’ development team where her passion for food and quality cooking expanded and fast forward to her arrival at the Orpington, perfectly timed. With the growth in their evening sittings; Tuesdays - Saturdays, guests can enjoy the Orpington’s handpicked selection of seasonal dishes on their menu, which highlights the eatery’s passion for incorporating ingredients and seasonal desirables from local producers and farmers. The current menu features a range of meat, fish, pasta and vegetarian dishes, complemented by a wonderful wine, beer and cocktail list, heavily influenced by Scott’s travels around the world. This quest for ‘farm to fork’ is at heart for the Orpington’s menu choice and one which runs throughout their breakfast, lunch and evening service; “When a guest compliments us on our delicious pastries, a perfect morning cuppa or the richness of our chicken, chorizo and borlotti bean stew, they are not only complimenting our chef, sous-chef and team but also, our local farmers and producers.” Explains Scott.
