With Natalia Romanova Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet
F
or ballet dancers all over the world, performing as a principal dancer within a company is the ultimate achievement. We caught up with soloist Natalia Romanova of Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet to ask her about her life as a young professional ballet dancer.
“We are constantly training, performing and fine tuning our dancing and acting skills throughout the year”
Q: How long do dancers prepare for a big production like The Nutcracker? How many hours training are involved? A: We are constantly training, performing and fine tuning our dancing and acting skills throughout the year. We tour all over the world so it’s not like we have to prepare for a one off production, it is just a way of life. On a performance day we have dance class all morning and afternoon, then the performance. It’s important to be warmed up properly. It’s certainly a way of life rather than a 9 to 5 job.
At home any free time is a great opportunity to catch up with family and friends, go to the cinema and yes, even go and watch a ballet. I still try every day to train though.
Q: While on tour, what is a typical day like? A: If it’s not a travel day we usually stay in a local hotel, we have breakfast and then head to the theatre for warm up class with the dance mistress usually starting at 10am. A break for lunch, then it’s back to warm up class, usually on the barres in the afternoon. We don’t tend to do dress rehearsals unless something has changed dramatically as we know the performance well. Then we break for tea, and get hair and makeup ready for showtime. If we don’t have a matinee, shows start at 7.30pm and finish at 11ish, so we change and sleep!
Q: What is your favourite dance in The Nutcracker? What do you think will impress Bromley audiences the most? A: I think everyone looks forward to seeing the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, it’s technically very demanding but such a joy to perform. I’m also looking forward to showcasing our new production of The Sleeping Beauty for Bromley audiences.
Q: What do most of the dancers do to relax? What do they do in their spare time? A: If on tour we try and take in a bit of the city we’re staying in but usually we don’t get much time. 18 DECEMBER 2018
Q: How old is your oldest dancer? What is the typical retirement age? A: Our company is fairly young, I don’t think age is really relevant, it’s more down to what your body is telling you. Dancing puts a lot of pressure on your joints so I suppose when my body tells me to stop I will have to. But not for a long while.
Q: What is your favourite thing about being a ballerina. A: Performing to audiences all over the world. It’s great to see and hear the reaction that the ballet has on people. The live orchestra always adds a special buzz to the performance and it’s magical to take people on a story-telling journey with you.

History with all the nasty bits left in! Horrible Histories: Terrible Tudors & Awful Egyptians takes to the Churchill Theatre stage Wed 6 – Sun 10 February 2019. Diane Parkes speaks to author Terry Deary.
Q: When you wrote your first Horrible Histories did you ever imagine the idea would go on to be so successful? A: Yes, I think most authors believe their work will be a huge success even though most books disappear from print after a couple of months. It’s that hope that keeps us going. When I wrote my very first fiction book 38 years ago my publisher said, ‘writing is like a sausage machine and you have to keep stuffing in at one end so something comes out the other end – it is like a process’. I kept writing book after book – fifty fiction titles before HH came along - but I never imagined I would have a series which would become first of all iconic and secondly that would still be selling 25 years later. Q: What do you believe is behind the popularity of Horrible Histories? A: Nobody had done anything like them before and they filled a desperate need. There were fact books for children but they tended to be written by experts on the subject. They knew their history but they didn’t have a clue how to write about it for children. So with Horrible Histories, instead of an expert who couldn’t write, they approached a children’s author who knew nothing about history. I get all my facts from research. I do my research and say ‘you will never guess what I discovered’ and ‘phwoar, this is great’. It is actually a simple answer. I say I am not an expert in history and this is why they work. Q: Have you ever found any facts which were too horrible to include? A: Well the publishers have said so. For example when the Vikings invaded they became settlers and had families here. But these settlers were as vicious 20 DECEMBER 2018
as the Vikings and when they invaded a Viking village they would find a Viking child, swing it by its legs and bash its brains out. But when I told the publishers they said ‘we can’t have that’ which is strange as I can’t see it is any worse than some of the other parts which have been included. When I went to school it was all about the Romans. It was the Romans who brought civilisation, the Romans who gave us water supplies and aqueducts, the Romans who brought us straight roads – that is what they told us all the time. But the Romans were the most evil people there were. They are the only people who killed people for sport. Thousands of them would go to an arena and watch people killed for sport and they are held up as models of civilisation. And, because teachers are telling them that, children grow up thinking the Romans were really civilised. Horrible Histories tell the truths that, in the past, teachers have cut out from history. Q: Why do Horrible Histories work so well on stage? A: We work really well as a team. BSC actor/ director Neal Foster is very knowledgeable and experienced in children’s theatre. BSC has been going for 25 years now. I have been a professional actor for 40 years. So, between us, we know what we are doing. We are not trying to write literary stuff. It isn’t the books on stage, we are not determined to be true to the spirit of the books, we are writing for theatre. So it is fresh and original. NO ONE PUTS BABY IN THE CORNER Dirty Dancing comes to Churchill Theatre Bromley, Mon 25 Feb– Sat 2 Mar 2019 was really young and being like ‘That’s not my type of film’ as I went off to play sports or whatever. Then I revisited it when I got into the dance industry more and I was like ‘Actually, it’s a really cool film’. The more time I spent in rehearsals looking through the script, which is the same as the film, we talked a lot about it being about bravery and becoming the person you want to be, regardless of your situation and people telling you you can’t. That’s very inspiring and I think that’s why it has done so well. Simone: When I saw it I was like ‘I just want to be a part of this, to just be in there’ especially with scenes like Do You Love Me? where they’re just having a party and I remember watching the Mambo and thinking ‘My goodness, I want to do that!’ and now I get to do it.
Kira Malou (Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman), Michael O’reiily (Johnny Castle), and Simone Covele (Penny Johnson) talk to Simon Button about bringing the classic film to the stage. How does it feel taking on such iconic roles? Michael: Once you get over the fact that it’s quite a daunting role to take on because it’s so well-known it’s just really exciting. Everyone is so familiar with the show and they’re so familiar with the characters that you’re just excited to do it justice, you’re ready to put in the work and bring it to life. Simone: I agree. It’s so exciting. Being able to play such an iconic role in a show that brings the movie to life on stage is an amazing privilege. Kira: It is really exciting but of course there’s also a lot of pressure to do the characters justice because they are so well-known and so iconic. How is the classic story recreated on stage? Kira: The script is the same as the film scene-byscene, with a few extra little surprises in there, and I feel it’s done really well. The set is a smaller replica of the actual Kellerman’s resort and in fact there are three big trucks they use for the staff quarters, the inside and outside of the hotel and the resort cabins. The music, of course, is so iconic and it’s done so well with the live band being on stage. They are fantastic musicians. Michael: The team do such a good job of bringing the story to the stage so it’s like reliving the film live. You’ve got all the dances, all the music, the band’s on stage kicking butt - it’s such a fun show. Can you recall when you first saw the film and the impact it had on you? Kira: I vividly remember watching it on videotape because my mum had it and I remember watching the dance scenes in the staff quarters and I was like ‘Oh my God!’ So I knew exactly how Baby feels when she goes to the resort. It was mesmerising. Michael: I remember my mum watching it when I 22 DECEMBER 2018
Michael and Kira, how much pressure is there to get the legendary lift right? Kira: It’s a huge pressure because everyone is waiting for that lift. It’s so iconic to the film, isn’t it? But when it comes to recreating it, I trust Michael. I trust that even if I fall he’ll have my back, but touch wood nothing’s gone wrong yet. Michael: The fun bit is when we do the lift in the water, which is done by visual effects. That’s fun because it’s where you get to mess it up and go wrong. The music is a massive part of the Dirty Dancing experience. Do you have a favourite song from the show? Kira: Hungry Eyes. I love that song and always have. Before I even auditioned for the show it was my alarm in the morning! Michael: For me it’s (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life. It was a massive hit and it’s such a popular song.But it’s my favourite because it comes right at the end of the show. It’s such a climactic moment where everyone is on stage dancing together and there’s a moment where Johnny comes through the crowd so there’s a real connection with the audience. Simone: Mine’s Do You Love Me? Love the routine, love the song, and it feels free where it’s like a party scene with your mates. It’s really raw and fun.

BISHOP CHALLONER REMEMBERS T he nursery at Bishop Challoner School in Shortlands has been instrumental in driving forward a whole-school creative initiative to commemorate the 100 years since the end of World War One. The pupils, staff and families of the school from nursery, through to sixth form, have been taking time out to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during WWI. During form time and classes the pupils were asked to reflect and to make a poppy for our large scale cross. Pupils in the school have used felt and buttons to either sew or glue poppies and families, staff and children at home have crocheted, knitted and sewn a variety of poppies to adorn our cross. ‘It has been lovely to work together as a whole school community and this activity has enriched the learning of our youngest pupils.’ Ms Ludlam, Head of Nursery. s a busy mum constantly juggling home life with work projects, Louise Redknapp doesn’t have much time for pampering. “I don’t often have a lot of different beauty treatments,” says the singer and former Eternal star, who split from her ex-footballer husband Jamie last year. “I’m not someone who goes and has different facials, but my mum is a facial reflexologist and I swear by that.” The practice involves massaging pressure points on the face that are said to correlate with different parts of the body and is intended to improve facial muscle tone and firmness. “It’s really good for anti-ageing,” Redknapp, 43, says. “She uses the crystals. It’s great for skin rejuvenation and lifting. “So that’s really the one thing that I love to do to pamper myself, and it’s kind of holistic and you get to zone out, especially when your mum does it, so it’s a bit of a bonus.” And it seems to be working, because the mumof-two looks fabulous. Facial sessions with mum aside, Redknapp likes to keep it simple with her home beauty routine and is a big fan of natural oils and hard-working skincare so that she doesn’t have to wear a lot of make-up. reating the perfect kitchen for you is an exciting project. No doubt you will have seen pictures in magazines and online or stood in a kitchen that has given you inspiration, but as you start to create your own you’ll find hundreds of options to choose from such as mixing and matching styles to contrast or compliment the rest of your home, combining materials with different aesthetic qualities and deciding on colour schemes to add your own personal touch to name just a few. With so much to consider, having an experienced designer to help guide you is invaluable. Here Schmidt Kitchens Sevenoaks gives their top 10 tips to guide you to creating the perfect kitchen for you.
1 Plan early. If extending, having your kitchen design ready will help avoid having to make too many compromises. Your architects and structural engineer can then ensure water, electric and drainage are best placed. 2 Create a ‘golden triangle’. Keep your sink, fridge and hob in a triangle with no more than 2m between each if possible. This will allow you to stand in the middle and be a step away from everything you need and create a much more ergonomic space. 3 Don’t try to cram too much in to a space. There is nothing more disappointing than investing in a kitchen and it feeling cramped. Always leave a minimum of 900mm+ between units to allow for doors to open and people to move around each other easily. 4 Make the kitchen multi functional. Apart from cooking, what will the space be used? Would it benefit from a breakfast bar or seated island to create a functional, yet social area to do your cooking? There’s nothing like a glass of wine with a friend whilst you cook or being able to prepare dinner whilst kids do their homework. 5 Invest in made to measure. Many pre manufactured units will leave you requiring large filler panels to cover up gaps leaving you with wasted potential. Made to measure will allow you to use every millimetre to get maximum value from

your space, increase storage and create options for more gadgets too. 6 Be smart with your storage. Why not get a tall larder unit with drawers in it, rather than shelves, to ensure that the can of beans at the back of the cupboard is not forgotten about for years to come! 7 Remember a rubbish bin! Imagine your lovely kitchen has just been installed, you’ve used up all the available space and now you have to find somewhere to put a big ugly bin, get a set of integrated bins tucked away in a unit out of sight. Small things can make a big difference. 8 Make sure that cleaning the dishes is a breeze. Locate your dishwasher underneath your sink drainer as this will allow you to quickly rinse and place anything into the dishwasher in one swift movement. 9 Safety first. Ovens above the height of a child, boiling tap that can’t be turned on easily or knocked on by accident, and induction hobs that have a much cooler residual surface temperature designed to make our kitchen a safer place. 10 Design what is right for you. Don’t need a dishwasher? Don’t get one. Want a gas hob? Get a gas hob. Want to store enough wine to party in style? With a second restaurant in Tonbridge opened a couple of years ago, the family run business is going from strength to strength, and constantly refreshes its menu to meet both customer and environmental needs.
Service With over 200 seats, there are a large team of kitchen, bar, and restaurant staff all working seamlessly to deliver great service. Our waitress helped us to choose some of the dishes, and ensured we had topped up glasses throughout the evening.
Food A recently updated menu sees slightly smaller side portions, but still with the same amount of amazingly high quality, delicious meat - this is to help reduce the food waste that they were experiencing, and to give customers a better balance. We tried some of the new dishes on the menu, all of which were full of flavour and well received, but our favourites included Kiyama Borek - a filo pastry parcel filled with minced lamb, chopped onion and spiced herbs, served with a chilli salsa that packed a pinch! For main, the Saslik kebab - tender,

thinly sliced aged lamb fillet marinated in a Havet marinade and skewered together with large slices of onion was totally melt in the mouth, and went well with the Turkish Baldo rice and browned vermicelli. For dessert, we were advised to try the Baklava - not too sweet, light, and served with pistachio cotton candy floss, and vanilla ice cream‌so good!
Drink A good selection of wine and Turkish beers are available, as well as cocktails, spirits and liqueurs.
