BISHOP CHALLONER SCHOOL
From Nursery to Reception Bishop Challoner School is dedicated to good transition at all stages of the school. We are proud of our transition between Nursery and Reception for our own pupils and for external applicants. Carefully planned transition activities and taster days are embraced for all the children, this gives them plenty of time to get used to the Reception teacher and the environment they will be joining in the September, making for a seamless start in Reception Class. When they join us, in addition to the core curriculum in Reception, pupils also take part in specialist subject areas such as Music, PE, Computing and French which are taught by charismatic specialist staff. Forest school has also been introduced to our Reception class this academic year where children are encouraged to develop their independence, safety and resilience skills in our own Forest school site. Our most recent inspection identified: “Children in EYFS display excellent attitudes to learning. They are independent learners who are keen to explore their environment. They display resilience and a willingness to work collaboratively.”
From Junior School to Senior School Making the transition from Junior to Senior School is a big step and our admissions and induction process at Bishop Challoner will guide you through every step of that journey. In preparation for joining Year 7 you can expect: • A number of taster sessions during the course of the Year to give pupils a flavour of what life is like in senior school. • A letter of welcome from the Headteacher and invitations to our various events: to help both the pupil and his/her family feel more at home with us. • Early intervention and support by the Learning Support Coordinator if it is needed. • A friendly welcoming letter from a current Year 7 Buddy. • Induction Day in June: a chance to meet Head of 22 DECEMBER 2017
Key Stage 3, Mr Raveney, buddies, teaching staff, other staff and experience some fun lessons. • New Parents’ Information Evening in June: parents and new pupils are invited to come and meet us and find out about the important partnership they are beginning with us. Meet the tutors, staff and Senior Leadership Team; look at uniform displays, order and purchase; receive pupil information booklet to help answer any queries. • Some tasks for our new entrants: to help keep their brains active, and an exciting ‘All About Me’ project challenge over the long summer break. • In early September: a day just for Year 7. Activities to allow friendships to develop with fun team building activities to help get to know their tutor group. • A dedicated Year 7 tutor team with experience of nurturing new pupils successfully through their first vital year. • A team of sixth form students committed to mentor Year 7 pupils if needed. • ‘Buddy Lunches’ during the first weeks in September- an opportunity for Year 7 to meet with their Buddy again over a bite to eat. • A special Pastoral Evening in the Autumn Term to allow parents to meet the tutors, and also the other pupils and parents in their son or daughter’s tutor group. www.bishopchallonerschool.com

Moscow City Ballet present
The Nutcracker
M
oscow City Ballet was formed in 1988 by the late distinguished Russian choreographer Victor Smirnov-Golovanov. A highly acclaimed ex soloist of the Bolshoi Ballet, Smirnov-Golovanov was committed to bringing his heritage of classical ballet in the Moscow style to audiences all over the world. Having first toured the UK in the early 1990s, the company continues to delight their thousands of fans in Great Britain and Ireland by visiting these shores each winter, including an annual date at Dartford’s Orchard Theatre. A Moscow City Ballet audience enjoys the talent of a company of over 75 people. The company’s distinctive style endures both in production and rehearsal, and is due to the dedication of Smirnov-Golovanov’s widow, Ludmila Nerubashenko, who has been leading the company for several years and officially took the title of Artistic Director in April 2014. Nerubashenko is keen to maintain the company’s ethos: “We do not plan to change

the style of our company or choreography. It was our mutual project with Victor, I plan to carry on in his foot-steps.” A performance of Russian classical ballet provides a theatrical dancing experience combining artistry, technique, narrative and live music, attracting a whole new generation of dance lovers. When the curtain goes up, the costumes and sets are beautiful, colourful, and a feast for the eye, while the sublime dance performances are all underpinned by the dynamic vitality of a live orchestra. The Nutcracker is a perennial favourite, an enchanting fairy tale following Clara’s Christmas adventure with a Nutcracker doll that magically comes to life. Set to Tchaikovsky’s captivating music, The Nutcracker is the perfect festive family treat and an ideal introduction to ballet. with Sam Bailey, Fat Friends How did you first encounter Fat Friends the Musical? Did you watch Fat Friends when it was on TV? I did briefly watch the television show! Obviously, I knew of Fat Friends and have always been a big fan of Ruth Jones and James Corden. Fat Friends started the career of both of those actors and look how far they have come now! When my agent contacted me, and said they were putting this stage show together I knew it would be incredible and something I would love to be a part of. Thankfully, I had an audition and it went really well! Could you tell us about Betty and what attracted you to the role? Betty is the mum of Kelly, who is played by Jodie Prenger. Betty is the protector and quite a strong woman. As a mum, she can be quite assertive but also has her insecurities, just like everybody else does. Betty has lost five stone in weight and has done so well so she is one that everybody in the slimming club wants to be like in the sense that that’s what all of the slimming club members are there for. As a mum she tells off her girls when they fight, argue, when they do something wrong but she is there for them whenever she needs to be. She is the boss really, her husband Fergus is wrapped around her little finger! Betty is a great character to play - I do think there are a lot of similarities between myself and Betty in the some of the things she does and the way she is to me as a person. What can audiences expect from Fat Friends the Musical? If anyone is not familiar with the show, how would you describe it in three words? Endeering - there are some really nice story lines in the show. True - the characters are true and it’s a true adaptation of life. So many aspects of this show happen every single day so audiences will have an understanding of that. Funny - there are some really emotional moments in the show as well though. I have cried on stage during the show in moments where I needed to but that was without even really acting it, I’ve just felt it and I know that the audience is going to be sobbing, especially if you are a mum! But there are some really funny bits, really funny stuff, some of the characters are hilarious. My daughter Joanne who is played by Rachel Wooding is brilliant and her character is so funny. I can imagine there is going to be a lot of people laughing. Freddie Flintoff has been doing incredibly well, he is blowing everyone away. He has a lovely character in the show and he portray it very well. Every day is a school day for me and I am coming in in awe of everyone else. I can’t wait to get on the road and get doing it! 28 DECEMBER 2017
Is there a city on the tour you’re most looking forward to visiting and why? I am looking forward to going to Bromley, I have never performed at the Churchill Theatre. My nan is from Bromley, I was brought up over that way so it will be nice to go back to Bromley and visit people while we’re there. Unfortunately, I am not doing the Scotland dates; Elaine C Smith will be doing those but I am looking forward to going doing the travelling and going everywhere really! Leeds will definitely be the most nerve racking, I suppose. For more ways than one; The show is set in Leeds so there are going to be a lot of people that go who are going to have a connection with it and to the accent so I’ve got to get it right. Which I have a feeling I have so hopefully I will be alright! www.fatfriendsthemusical.com

he ‘Saint Petersburg Theatre Classic Ballet of Marina Medvetskaya’ (to give the company its full title) was formed in early 1996. Though a relatively young company, the artists and staff are a cross-section of the best of the Russian tradition in Classical Ballet, whilst actively seeking to inspire a new generation of Russian and international choreographers to contribute to its repertoire. Artistic Director Marina Medvetskaya is a disciple of the world famous choreographer, dancer, and teacher Vakhtang Ghabukiani. She founded Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet with the goal of making ballet available to wider audiences and this exciting and talented company is currently touring the UK for the third time. Showcasing the superb technique and artistic heritage from the cradle of Russian ballet – the City of St Petersburg – the company’s performances have an air of magic, complemented by a full orchestra and outstanding soloists and have won plaudits across the world.
SWAN LAKE Music: Pyotr Tchaikovsky Swan Lake is the romantic story of the Prince and the Swan Princess, a tragic tale of love that triumphs over evil, set to Tchaikovsky’s sublime, soaring dramatic score. The dual role of Odette and Odile is one of classical ballet’s most famous, and a favourite of many Russian dancers. 30 DECEMBER 2017
“The Churchill Theatre plays host to their opulent version of The Nutcracker, with stunning baroque designs” THE NUTCRACKER Music: Pyotr Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker is a delightfully festive tale, and the perfect introduction to ballet. BEING BOND
As we celebrate more than half a century of James Bond films and wait with anticipation for Daniel Craig’s next instalment of stunts, style and stupendous womanising, film expert Damon Smith reveals how each of the six 007 actors fared in the role...
007: suave, devilishly charming and - at a strapping 6ft 2 - physically imposing. That incredible, bruising hand-to-hand fight sequence in a carriage of the Orient Express in From Russia With Love confirms this Bond knows how to handle himself. He’s equally adept at manhandling SPECTRE’s femme fatales, including Honor Blackman’s purrfectly suggestive Pussy Galore in Goldfinger. Their on-screen chemistry melts celluloid. In 1983, Connery came out of retirement as Bond after a 12-year hiatus for the unofficial Bond adventure Never Say Never Again. I felt it was a mission too far - Connery was in his early 50s by then, and his wit and weathered machismo couldn’t paper over cracks in the plot.
George Lazenby Sean Connery Successful missions: 6 (Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever) Years of active service: 1962-67, 71, 83 He may not have perfectly embodied the “cold and ruthless” James Bond depicted in Ian Fleming’s books, but Sean Connery is, for me, the defining 44 DECEMBER 2017
Successful missions: 1 (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) Years of active service: 1969 Anyone who followed Sean Connery was doomed to drink from a poisoned chalice, and Australian actor George Lazenby took a polite sip in his one and only appearance as 007. There’s a palpable absence of charisma to his incarnation of the secret agent and his introduction as Bond, which saw him

running into the sea to save a suicidal woman from drowning, followed by a fight on the beach with two gun-toting assailants, hardly sets pulses racing. In a memorable dinner party sequence, dressed in a kilt and surrounded by a bevy of lovelies, he famously quips that he feels “a slight stiffness coming on”. Lazenby could be referring to his performance. He does get to show some of the character’s vulnerability though, in one of the series’ great love stories with the ravishing Diana Rigg. Lazenby almost milks a real tear in the tragic final scene, cradling his murdered bride in his arms after she has been shot by Blofeld’s henchwoman Irma Bunt. In that moment, he comes tantalisingly close to genuine emotion.
Roger Moore Successful missions: 7 (Live And Let Die, The Man With The Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, A View To A Kill) Years of active service: 1973-85 With a perpetually arched eyebrow and a flirtatious twinkle in his blue eyes, Roger Moore restored the roguish charm to Bond during his prolonged stint with MI6. He was a master at delivering innuendo with the hint of a smirk, like when he tells a wetbehind-the-ears female agent in Live And Let Die, “I’m sure we’ll be able to lick you into shape.” However, even Moore couldn’t kindle a single spark of sexual tension with Grace Jones, his robotic co-star in his lacklustre swansong, A View To A Kill. Moore was less convincing as a brawler than Connery - he always looked like the kind of Bond who would apologise to an evil criminal mastermind for landing a punch - but he did get one of the classic showdowns with Christopher Lee’s triplenippled Scaramanga in a funhouse hall of mirrors in The Man With The Golden Gun.
Timothy Dalton Successful missions: 2 (The Living Daylights, Licence To Kill) Years of active service: 1987-89 Unlike his debonair predecessor in the role, Timothy Dalton left you in no doubt that his iteration of Bond was an expertly trained and merciless assassin. His 007 is utterly relentless in Licence To Kill as an avenging angel for murdered CIA pal Felix Leiter, who is fed to a shark by sadistic drug lord Franz Sanchez played by Robert Davi. In response, Bond defies orders to mete out rough justice using a shredding machine, spilt petrol and a cigarette lighter. When puns tumbled from Dalton’s lips, they weren’t delivered with obvious relish, and there wasn’t much room left for sensuality. It was always going to be difficult to take him seriously as a silver-tongued cad, when one of his first acts of chivalry as Bond in The Living Daylights is to rescue a beautiful cellist (Maryam d’Abo) from the KGB - by slaloming down wintry slopes with her astride her instrument’s case. That’s the closest he comes to making sweet music in the role.
“In one of the series’ great love stories with the ravishing Diana Rigg. Lazenby almost milks a real tear in the tragic final scene”
“Roger Moore restored the roguish charm to Bond during his prolonged stint with MI6”
Pierce Brosnan Successful missions: 4 (GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day) Years of active service: 1995-2002 Pierce Brosnan had been mooted as Roger Moore’s successor, but the dashing Irish actor was obliged to honour contractual commitments to the TV series Remington Steele. When he finally got his hands on Bond’s Walther PPK, Brosnan made a spectacular entrance in GoldenEye, with a leap of death down the face of a dam, followed by the infiltration of a Soviet chemical weapons facility, replete with a tongue-in-cheek quip for one henchman in a toilet cubicle. For me, Brosnan comes closest to replicating Connery’s pleasing cocktail of seductive allure and brute force, and he is gifted some choice one-liners. His erotically charged verbal sparring with Xenia Onatopp - played by Famke Janssen - in GoldenEye, is a rapid-fire masterclass in double entendres. Brosnan left on a high in Die Another Day, feasting “like there’s no tomorrow” on Halle Berry’s Jinx, whose bikini-clad introduction is a cute throwback to Ursula Andress’ Honey Ryder in Dr. No.
Daniel Craig Successful missions: 4... so far (Casino Royale, Quantum Of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre) Years of active service: 2006-present Continuing the alternating sequence of suave and stoic Bonds, Daniel Craig jettisoned the warmth and charm embraced by Brosnan to portray Bond as a man who preferred to communicate with his fists and a scowl. Craig is certainly well-equipped for the physical rigours of the role, engaging in some of the series’ most brutal fisticuffs in an attempt to rival the breathless, bone-crunching fight choreography of Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne. He flaunted his impressive physique by emerging from the sea in Casino Royale, his first outing as 007, wearing a pair of tight-fitting blue swimming trunks that sent audiences into a swoon. If only Craig could convincingly have the same effect on his female costars. The tragic romance with Vesper Lynd - played by Eva Green - in Casino Royale, is sexually inert because he’s solid ice to her molten lava, while his seduction of Monica Bellucci in Spectre is a lot of heavy breathing that eventually runs out of puff. BIG GAME 10
This month, Harlequins will celebrate an exhilarating decade of Big Games at the home of rugby; Twickenham Stadium. Since its beginnings in 2008, the Big Game series has rapidly risen in popularity and is now a firm fixture in the festive sporting calendar.

Saturday 30th December 2017
n Saturday 20th December, Harlequins will face off with Northampton Saints and there is something of a score to settle between the two teams with Saints beating Harlequins in Big Game 7 back in 2014. In the first of the Big Game series 50,000 supporters descended on Twickenham Stadium to watch Harlequins and Leicester Tigers play out a 2626 draw thanks in no small part to the last-minute try of Ugo Monye and subsequent conversion of Nick Evans. Big Game 4 against Saracens famously set a global rugby union attendance record for a regular season club fixture when Twickenham Stadium was at a full 82,000 capacity. Over the nine matches played so far, attendances have averaged out at 75,000 as rugby goers get their Christmas fix. As Big Game comes to its tenth birthday, Harlequins and England scrum-half Danny Care one of only two players to play in them all - can’t wait to run out at Twickenham Stadium. “Big Games are huge moments for the players, the Club and the fans. Every Christmas it’s the one special game you look forward to and it’s an awesome opportunity for us to go and play at Twickenham with your club side. The Club always puts on a massive spectacle and we can’t wait to get to Big Game 10. The first one seems like a long time ago but we’re really excited about this one. The fans love it and it’s a great opportunity for families around Christmas to come and watch a great sporting event.” Big Game, however, is not just about the rugby

- there is something for everyone whether you’re a rugby lover or not. In the week between Christmas and New Year, Big Game has prided itself on being a day out for all the family as the rugby and entertainment world collide with spectacular musical performances, jaw-dropping pyrotechnics and entertainment for all the family. Last year’s chapter – Big Game 9 – took home the Best Sports Event Award at the 2017 Sports Business Award, seeing off competition from British Cycling, EA Sports and the Professional Darts Corporation. Over the years, acts including EXTREME Sports, Olly Murs and Rudimental have all performed at Big Game where television personalities Mark Wright and Vernon Kay have both MC’d the event. Big Game 10 is the perfect opportunity to round off Christmas by bringing together your family, friends or colleagues for a full day of entertainment both inside and outside the stadium. As kick-off approaches, make your way into the stadium for the famous ball delivery, last year the ball was parachuted in by base jumper Gary Connery who was the body double for the Queen at the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony in London. This year Harlequins have gone bigger and better. All that’s left to do is sit back and watch the nail biting match with 80,000 other supporters unfold. Tickets start from just £24 for adults and £14 for children and can be purchased by calling the Harlequins Ticket Office on 020 8410 6010 or on their website at www.quins.co.uk.

PARTY SEASON BEAUTY S U RV I VA L G U I D E
We asked the experts what we can do to prevent total complexion meltdown in the run-up to Christmas. WORDS: Katie Wright
W
ith fizz flowing, cheesy tunes blaring and mince pies aplenty, there’s a lot of indulgent fun to be had at the seasonal shindigs. But if you’re not careful, by December 25, your face will end up looking like a turkey that’s been left in the oven too long. “Christmas parties mean a lot of alcohol, very little sleep, and possibly smoking as well,” explains Dr Penelope Tympanidis, consultant dermatologist and owner of the Dermaperfect Clinic. “And as a result of wearing too much make-up (or from non-meticulous make-up removal) the results can mean puffy eyes, dark circles, dull looking skin, dehydration and spots.” But help is at hand. We asked a gang of gurus known as the Harley Street Emporium Skintellectuals for their top tips on how to protect your complexion against the ravages of party season. Here’s what they had to say... 60 DECEMBER 2017
Try a raw egg face mask To brighten dull skin, whip up a quick home-made face mask, says Dr Tympanidis. “Beat a whole egg and apply it to all areas of your face and leave ‘til it dries. Remove it with olive or almond oil.” Egg whites contain albumin, a protein which is great for tightening pores and helping control oil production, and the yolks contain proteins and fatty acids that can help moisturise your skin.
Schedule a few early nights “Try and catch up on sleep in between the late nights,” says Dr Adam Friedmann from the Harley Street Dermatology Clinic. Why? “At night, the skin relaxes. It’s not under any stress, so can recuperate after a hard day. Your skin cells go into regeneration mode, replacing damaged or dead cells with new ones. When sleep is reduced, due to lots of late nights, so is the body’s ability to carry out these functions. A bare minimum of six to seven hours but ideally nearer to eight hours - would suit.”
Pop on a couple of eye masks For Dr Anjali Mahto, Consultant Dermatologist at Skin55, a hydrating eye mask is a must, but she says there are some ingredients you should look

out for to make sure they’re effective. “Eye masks are a good, quick, temporary fix for puffiness and dark circles, which can occur after lots of late nights. They are usually gel-like treatments, which are formulated with hydrating and plumping ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, caffeine and colloidal gold. Must-have ingredients to look out for in eye creams include hyaluronic acid, ceramides, retinol, neuropeptides and vitamins C and E.” Skin Republic Brightening Eye Masks, £4.99 for three pairs, LookFantastic
Make a camomile compress A cheaper alternative for refreshing puffy eyes is a camomile tea bag compress, which Dr Tympanidis says is “great for reducing swelling and inflammation”. Make yourself a pot of this soothing tea and once the tea bags have cooled, squeeze the excess liquid out and spend a good ten minutes or so relaxing with them on your eyes.
Don’t forget your 5-a-day “It’s tempting to over indulge during the festive season, but try to remember to eat well in between the excess,” says Dr Friedmann. “It’s important to eat a healthy and balanced diet to maintain all one’s minerals and natural oils. Eating lots of vegetables and salads will soak up the free radicals and help the look and feel of your skin.”
De-stress not distress Throwing a party yourself ? All that planning and prep can send your stress levels soaring. “It’s a known fact that stress and exhaustion lower the immune system and can make skin worse,” explains Dr Friedmann. “So, try and take some time out for yourself and do something you know helps you relax.” Dr Rupert Critchley, founder of Viva Skin Clinics, adds: “Feeling stressed or having breakouts? Meditation and mindfulness both have a positive impact on the stresses and strains of the Christmas period. They reduce the bodies circulating stress hormones, such as cortisol, which can trigger breakouts.”
Always remove your make-up thoroughly It sounds obvious, but it’s not just the make-up residue that causes problems, according to Dr Friedmann: “If you haven’t removed your make-up properly, you tend to be heavier handed to try and remove stubborn make-up that’s been on the face a while. This firm wiping action can irritate the skin and encourage flare-ups,” he says. “The very act of rubbing will usually cause blood vessels to dilate, causing redness. The under-eye area especially is very delicate, so you want to avoid harsh rubbing of this area. When removing mascara and eye make-up, it’s best to gently place a cotton ball with remover over your lid and hold it there for 62 DECEMBER 2017
a few seconds, to help dissolve the product, before wiping it away.” Eucerin DermoPurifyer Miccellar Water, £9.50, Boots
Go easy on the booze “Excess alcohol consumption can cause blood vessel dilatation, which can make the face look quite red. This is because alcohol dilates the blood vessels and increases the cardiac output, so that everything gets redder,” says Dr Friedmann. “Anyone who already has skin disease (such as dermatitis or psoriasis) will often notice it worsening.” So on the nights you haven’t got a party in the diary, stay off the sauce and quaff plenty of water or herbal teas to rehydrate.
Murad City Skin SPF 50, £45, available from Murad
Up your antioxidants Give your seasonal tipple a virtuous twist with an antioxidant-rich ingredient. “Add a teaspoon of organic matcha green tea powder to your festive gin and tonic,” Dr Critchley suggests. “It takes mere seconds, but it will give you a potent antioxidant boost, which protects the skin from free radicals.”
Watch your water intake “Try and switch over to water or a soft drink in between alcoholic beverages, and pace yourself, as alcohol can cause dehydration of the skin and lead to facial bloating,” Dr Critchley recommends. Dr Tympanidis adds: “As well as drinking lots of water, have some citrus juices to help keep your antioxidant levels up. The water will help keep your skin looking plumper, while the vitamins in the juice will help combat the damage caused by free radicals that can age our skin.”
Slap on the sunscreen “Don’t forget your sunscreen - even if it is cold and grey outside,” insists Dr Mahto. “Sunscreen isn’t just for the summer and should be worn throughout the year, as there is still damaging ultraviolet radiation around. Sunscreen should be offering protection against UVA and UVB, and at least SPF 15. Regular sunscreen use will help prevent against skin cancer and premature ageing.” Murad City Skin SPF 50, £45

Why move to a retirement community? “Moving to a retirement village opens up new prospects and broadens your horizons.
P
eople used to feel that their options narrowed in later life. Growing older meant downsizing from a much-loved family home to something smaller with little or no facilities. Today, with more people living longer than ever before, there’s a brighter alternative. Moving to a retirement village opens up new prospects and broadens your horizons. It allows you to enjoy a modern, independent lifestyle without the burden of maintaining your house and garden, together with the reassurance of staff on-site 24-hours a day. Many people find that a retirement village provides a stimulating and social community of like minded people. Emerson Park, which opens in spring 2018, demonstrates how retirement communities in the UK have now caught up with those on offer in America, where they have been around for far longer. Situated on Rowhill Road in Hextable, its enviable location combines the peace and tranquillity of a traditional English village with easy access to the bright city lights – central London is just a 36-minute train journey away. This, coupled with its proximity to the M20 and M25, makes it easy for friends and family members to visit. Retirement villages are specifically designed to keep residents healthy, active and social. Emerson Park offers a range of five-star facilities including a state-of-the-art exercise studio and gym, hair and beauty salon, and a purpose-built cinema room. There is a feast of dining choices from a healthy snack in the café/bar to 3-course dining in the elegant ambience of the Club Room restaurant. A full-time Social & Events Manager plans and organises events and activities inspired by the residents’ interests, and family and friends are welcomed. In addition, a private transport service opens up opportunities for trips to local shops and day excursions to nearby places of interest. Nowadays retirement villages offer larger properties in-line with what customers are looking for and Emerson Park is no exception. It offers 47 luxury apartments ranging from 682 sq.ft to 1,080sq.ft, all of which are purchased on a 125-year lease. All of the one- and two-bedroom apartments are designed to accommodate the needs of discerning older people, from the stylish kitchens

and bathrooms to the contemporary lighting and double-glazing. For peace of mind there is an audiovisual entry system from each apartment to the main entrance, plenty of outside lighting including passive infra-red sensors and a 24-hour emergency call system to an on-site team should you need it. For those who feel they need a bit more help, Emerson Park offers five spacious one-bedroom Service Plus Suites. These are located with easy access to all the communal facilities and come with practical, discreet support services including a delicious three-course lunch, an hour a week of housekeeping and an on-site laundry service.. Moving to a retirement village such as Emerson Park means that everything from lawn care to routine maintenance is done for you, leaving you free to enjoy yourself. You can lock-up and leave knowing that your home will remain safe and secure, give you the opportunity to travel or visit family and friends, free from worry. Becoming part of a community of like-minding people, sharing similar interests and making new friends is often an unexpected bonus. In addition, unlike some accommodation options, Emerson Park welcomes people with pets as well. For anyone seeking a luxury retirement that gives them the time and freedom to enjoy doing the things they love, a retirement community could easily provide the perfect answer. The show apartment at Emerson Park is available to view Monday to Saturday 10am – 4pm and on Sunday by prior appointment. Perfect Waves In Just Four Steps
James Pryce reveals a clever trick for creating natural-looking waves without setting foot inside a salon. words: Katie Wright
H
airdressers often talk about their big break, the job that sent their career soaring, but James Pryce’s was bigger than most. He scooped the gig of a lifetime when he was asked to style Kate Middleton’s hair on the day she became the Duchess of Cambridge. How does he feel when he looks back on the Royal Wedding and creating Kate’s famous ‘demi chignon’ style? “I’m incredibly proud. When I look back on it now, it almost seems like it didn’t happen,” he says of the “surreal” day. Sitting in the Abbey waiting for her to come in was really nerveracking but when I saw her silhouetted against the Abbey doors...I felt this flood of emotion come over me. I’m not ashamed to say that I shed a little tear, because my mum had died of cancer a few years before that and I know how proud she would have been of me.” James, who comes from a family of hairdressers

and now works at London’s Larry King salon, says he doesn’t see Kate “as often as I used to,” but he remains the Middleton family hairdresser, and was responsible for Pippa Middleton’s latest chop, explaining that the “really cool bob” was chosen because Kate’s sister wanted to switch up her look post-wedding. “I think a lot of women grow their hair out for their wedding and I find a lot of my clients want to have a bit of a change afterwards, it was basically that.” After 22 years in the industry, wedding hair isn’t his only speciality, however. “I’m a big advocate of using what nature gave you, it’s kind of my strapline,” he says, which is why we were so keen to grill James on how to get those gorgeous, effortless-looking waves that every longhaired beauty on Instagram has these days. Surely they require a trip to the salon or hours slaving over the curling tongs? “No, absolutely not,” he insists. “A lot of people have a little bit of a wave in their hair naturally, and waves and curls are very much in at the moment. So I try and give my clients tips for how to do their hair on their own at home.” The hair pro has got an amazingly easy method for achieving those waves we all want - and it doesn’t involve tongs or a barrel brush. Here’s James foolproof four-step guide to your easiest at-home blow-dry ever.
Start with freshly-washed damp hair “Everyone’s hair is different so I couldn’t really recommend a particular shampoo, but often curly hair can be a little dryer so I might recommend a more moisturising shampoo.”
Add a curl-enhancing product
Redken Curvaceous Full Swirl Cream Serum, £11.20, available from LookFantastic
“With the right products, you can really coax out your natural curl. Redken do a beach spray and a spiral curl cream that I’d recommend. Apply the product all over then comb it through.” Redken Beach Envy Volume Wave Aid, £11.55 and Redken Curvaceous Full Swirl Cream Serum, £11.20, both available at LookFantastic.com
Twist and blow dry “I’ve been asking my clients to dig out those old diffusers, they usually have one at the back of the cupboard. When it’s wet, twist the hair in 50p-sized chunks, quite big chunks, and then diffuse it to really encourage the natural curl. You just pop the hairdryer on and hold the hair next to the diffuser.” The Airshot, £99, and The Airshot Diffuser, £15, from Cloud Nine
Add texture Redken Beach Envy Wave Aid, £11.55, available from LookFantastic
“If you want to increase texture, use Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. I rarely use hairsprays any more, it’s more like a dry shampoo. It doesn’t make the hair go hard, it’s slightly powdery and gives it a really nice texture.” Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, £41, Space NK

champagne hues, subtle pinks, purples and plums. Combine textures such as satin, velvet and faux fur, key to creating a luxurious, romantic feel. For a contemporary vibe, dress a bed with white bed linen and a velvet throw, and add an eclectic mix of cushions. In any style of bedroom, the bed should always take centre stage. For a more feminine interpretation, add art deco-style mirrored furniture and on-trend metallic accents, lamps and accessories.” Tip: For smaller rooms, avoid heavy patterns and dark colours, as they’ll look too busy, while at the other end of the scale, larger rooms shouldn’t be too minimalist, as they can look cold.
Hotel style “A boutique hotel-style bedroom is a hugely popular choice and this crisp, smart look appeals particularly to couples who want a style that suits both their tastes, and is neither overtly feminine nor macho,” says Samantha. “Colour is key in creating a haven of rest, so look at palettes you’re both drawn to. If you can’t agree on which shade, opt for something pale - like a soft grey or off-white hue - that provides a neutral backdrop. Enhance the mood and ambience with carefully considered lighting, such as task lighting for bedtime reading on either side of the bed. We offer Zip & Link beds, (£1,722 for Zip & Link mattress; £2,289 for Zip & Link mattress and bed set), ideal for couples who have different preferences. This type of bed is made up of two mattresses with different comfort levels, which can be used together or separated into two singles.”
Tip: Dare to go for a paler carpet, as this is normally a ‘low-traffic’ area and hopefully, where people don’t wear shoes. Neutrals or greys will work with most schemes, and carpet is warmer underfoot.
Boudoir on a budget “Autumn’s the perfect time to put a stylish twist on your bedroom’s design. For a simple and easy way to rejuvenate the look of your space, consider changing a headboard,” suggests Samantha. “A tall, winged headboard gives a room the ‘wow’ factor and completely transforms its aesthetic into something sophisticated and special. Or opt for a simple metal or wooden one, if you don’t want the bed to dominate. Dress a bed with throws and cushions in a new colour scheme - deep blues, teal and indigo are in fashion. This colour could be used to paint a feature wall behind the bed, or take the shade over the walls and ceiling for a cosy, cosseting feel. Even a basic makeover can make a difference. Focus on decluttering and tidying surfaces - too many visual distractions can make it hard to relax and sleep. Change bedside lamps or just replace drawer handles and curtain ties with more decorative items. All these can make a surprising difference to the room’s atmosphere and appeal, and all for a minimal cost.” Accessorise your bed with Furniture Village’s Velour Cushions, £39 each, and a Cera Mustard Table Lamp, £119. Tip: If you’re space-starved, consider fitted furniture, which can create up to three times more storage space than freestanding pieces, as it can be tailored to precisely fit the room. putting on the ritz The Art Deco movement – characterised by geometric designs, gold accents, and ornate silhouettes – is a trend that has shown no signs of slowing down. Living It Up takes inspiration from the era in their new range of Milano accent chairs. Art Deco appeal is given a thoroughly 2017 spin, by putting velvet and brass centre-stage. The first thing you’ll notice about the Milano is its striking geometric frame, made of stainless steel coated in brass, this year’s hottest metal. It’s highly stylized, sleek and luxurious frame is accompanied by plush navy or pink velvet upholstery and a beautiful buttoned back. The chair is made even more desirable through the addition of a high-density foam seat, for the utmost comfort. CHOOSING A NEW SOFA WORDS: GABRIELLE FAGAN
B
uying a new settee can be stressful. Three experts share their top tips and trends to plump for. Over the course of a sofa’s life (which lasts, on average, 11 years) it will witness 1,236 arguments, 2,105 kissing couples, 3,135 films watched by families, and overhear 2,631 phone conversations, according to new research for Furniture Village. So, it’s all the more important then, to choose a sofa that doesn’t just look good and fit in, but can withstand all that activity and emotion. Experts reveal their buying secrets to help you choose the best seat in the house...
‘Green and orange are the hottest sofa colours right now’ “We’re always keeping abreast of trends and this year, in Italy, at Salone del Mobile - which showcases the latest in furniture and design from around the world - we saw two colours dominate - burnt orange 78 DECEMBER 2017
and forest green,” says Alison Hill, creative director at DFS. Forest green reflects our desire to bring the ‘outside in’ and orange is a complementary colour to green. Curved-back ‘cocooning’ furniture is increasingly popular, too. We’ve really seen craftsmanship trending in recent years - highlighted in detail on upholstery and frames. Raising furniture forms on plinths - another popular look - provides a sense of continuous space in a room, and is an advantage if you’re constrained for space. All cushions are not created equal - some people like a firm and supportive feel, while others want something soft and squishy to sink into. We have fibre filling for a soft feel; a foam core for balanced softness, and support and foam for a supportive, slightly springy feel. An extra set of loose covers are available to buy with our sofas, too.” Alison’s favourite sofa... “The Fliss is country-style meets urban living, with its sweeping curved arms and stunning turned legs. I love the pink and plum colour combination.”
“Over the course of a sofa’s life it will witness 1,236 arguments, 2,105 kissing couples, 3,135 films watched by families, and overhear 2,631 phone conversations”
sofa will work wonders. A large corner unit may be a good option to consider, as this offers flexible seating solutions, as well as adding structure to open-plan spaces. If you’re working with a more compact room, consider a raised sofa with smaller proportions and slender tapered legs, which will help create the illusion of space and light.” Malcolm’s favourite sofa... “The Nicoletti Movimento Recliner Corner Chaise is my top pick, as its deep, luxurious foamfilled seats and optional touch sensitive power recliner function make this a stylish and superbly comfortable choice,” says Malcolm.
‘Big families should opt for a statement sofa’ “A sofa’s one of the most used and best-loved pieces of furniture in our home,” says Malcolm Walker, director of product at Furniture Village. “Far from just being a place to sit, it can be the centre of many pivotal moments in family life whether it’s arguments and the subsequent making up, or a power nap after a long day. But the sheer amount of time that we spend on a sofa, along with the number of activities that we do while lounging on it can mean it needs to stand up to a lot of wear and tear - particularly if you have children. As the seasons shift from summer to autumn, we have seen the re-emergence of earthy hues and tactile finishes. Worn leathers and raw materials pair together to create a rustic decor, perfect for those looking to achieve a sense of warmth and comfort,” says Malcolm. Velvet continues to enjoy a renaissance around this time of year, with jewel tones and brass finishes accompanying this textile, to introduce a sense of sophisticated luxury to any scheme. The two key concepts to take into account when choosing a sofa are the space you are working with and your own personal style. A sofa will naturally become the focal point in any space, so ensuring that it captures the look you want is essential,” says Malcolm. If your home caters for a big family, then a statement
‘Check the basics’
“Check a room is not only large enough for the size of the sofa, but also that its proportions are right”
“We’re fans of sofas that are big enough to lounge around on, look good and most importantly are super-comfy,” says Charlie Marshall, founder of Loaf. “People are becoming more adventurous with colour in their homes, as sites like Pinterest are providing people with inspiration, making it easier for them to get bolder colours right. Our new fabric collection for 2018 is full of vibrant hues, including Carnival (a red/pink coral hue), Maize Yellow, Clean Green and Deep Blue Lido, in velvets and linens. We recently updated our Souffle Sofa as a modular design, and each unit can be customised in a different fabric and colour for a statement look, or in one fabric for a classic look.” Check a sofa has a solid beech frame, held together with screws and dowels, rather than glued and stapled chipboard versions, which aren’t as durable and break easily If you have your very own team of ‘stain spreaders’ (young children and pets) removable covers are a good choice, as they can be easily whipped off for cleaning,” advises Charlie. Always measure up before buying. Check a room is not only large enough for the size of the sofa, but also that its proportions are right. High-back sofas can be overpowering in a smaller room with a low ceiling. Fitting a new sofa through narrow doorways can be tricky - ask for access advice - bolt-on arms can be a great solution.” Charlie’s favourite sofa... “The Pudding Sofa is a fresh take on a classic design and it has a super-deep comfy seat. It looks great in our classic linens and neutral fabrics, as much as it does in our bolder choices, such as Burnt Orange velvet.”

nteriors emporium Rockett St George, is renowned for its quirky eye and distinctive, glamorous look - and capturing these vibes in your own home has never been easier, as brand founder Jane Rockett and Lucy St George have shared their secrets in a new book, Extraordinary Interiors. Here, Jane and Lucy talk to us about how it all began, staying inspired, and how to recreate their style in your own home...
was sealed when we discovered we not only shared a passion for black clothes, but for flea markets, Manchego cheese, travel, actor Tom Hardy and, of course, interiors. 10 years ago, we joined forces to make a career out of our passion and Rockett St George was born. Our mantra is: Make it personal, be brave, style one step at a time, and enjoy every minute.”
How did you two meet?
How do you create a really unique interior?

“Our answer is always the same - you are completely individual in every way, so the secret to creating a unique look is simply to express your personality in your home,” says Jane. “Perhaps the easiest way to achieve this is by displaying carefully curated favourites in a creative way. Whether it’s objects you have made yourself, family pieces, vintage kitchenware or precious children’s art, it can all look fabulous when displayed well.” TIP: Always curate (sort the wheat from the chaff) and display your chosen pieces well, and remember, less is more. says Lucy. “A lovely dark wall will make all your favourite accessories pop - wood looks gorgeous against a strong backdrop, bright colours sing and plants simply glow.” TIP: Wood-clad walls add warmth and texture, but wood-effect wallpaper or wallpaper is also an option. Always consider the direction of your room before choosing a paint colour, as the light will affect the look. South-facing rooms enjoy warm, natural light and can take most colours, while north-facing rooms need a warm-based colour with underlying brown and yellow tones, rather than cool, blue-based hues.

How do you choose a focal point for a room?
different seasons, or just because you want to shake things up.
How do you decide on a decor theme? “We love white rooms with beautiful monochrome accessories - they are stylish, calm and timeless. But nothing gets us more excited than gorgeous dark walls, which conjure a brooding, inky colour palette. Historically, dark paints were at their most popular during Victorian times, but they look fabulous in modern, traditional, rustic and urban interiors,”
“We talk a lot about ‘style spots’ - a focal point that grabs the eye. It’s a grouping of furniture, artwork and lighting that fits beautifully together and creates impact,” explains Jane. “When planning a room, we encourage people to split the space up into sections, such as the fireplace, the seating area, the entrance and so on, then to consider each one as an individual style spot. This is much easier and less daunting than designing a whole room. Bear in mind, the flow of a space is important. It’s always worth shifting furniture around and trying out different combinations for a week or so, to see if a new arrangement works better. It’s amazing how this can change the energy in a space and create a fresh, positive atmosphere.” TIP: Display a collection of pictures, photos, album covers or even handbags on a wall. Before hanging framed pieces, lay them out on the floor to devise a layout and make sure they work well together. Space artworks at least 4cm apart to give each one room to breathe, and put your favourite (or largest) in the middle at eye level, then build outwards from there.

Sundridge Interiors QUALITY AND DESIGN
A
mongst Sundridge Interiors many services the most popular of all is their “design service”. This superb service is the answer to the challenges facing customers when considering making changes to their existing home or starting afresh with a new home. The reason for this is simple, Sundridge Interiors offer a “tailor made” design service to suit all budgets. Sundridge always get the project moving by visiting their clients home, they discuss the requirements of each client in detail and get a real feel of the project and what will be involved. The Sundridge approach is simple, they take one room at a time giving due consideration to extended areas throughout the home in order to create a sense of continuity and harmony. Then mood boards are created by selecting a variety of styles and fabrics – wall coverings – flooring – lighting – furniture – decorative objects. These all become an integral part of the theme, creating a comfortable, harmonious atmosphere. After discussion with the client a specific theme will be agreed. At this point samples will be ordered on a larger scale for both fabrics and upholstery 86 DECEMBER 2017
“Ideas can be transformed into reality, for example a coffee table or a pair of armchairs can be made by working closely with the furniture makers”
to get a clearer vision of the end result. Clients are encouraged to visit to the showroom during this process because this joint discussion forms an important part in the creation of the specific required style of room or rooms. At this time clients can peruse the many other items on display in the showroom, extensive lighting displays and table lamps are strategically placed on various items of furniture throughout the showroom to give clients an idea of how they will look in the home. There are also a wide selection of mirrors to suit all rooms in the house, these are displayed on a variety of walls and colourings. Bespoke furniture is another part of the service on offer from Sundridge. Ideas can be transformed into reality, for example a coffee table or a pair of armchairs can be made by working closely with the furniture makers. Clearly lighting plays a major part in the creation of beautiful bathrooms. They have a wide selection of concealed ceiling lights which are complimented with floor and cabinet lighting, all are on display for customers to see. Sundridge Interiors are truly successful and have a waiting list for their design services, however clients are seen quickly and usually work is able to start within three weeks from the first meeting. The time span tdesign a room from start to completion is approximately four weeks and as an example the design fee for an average sized room is approximately £495 and for much larger rooms or rooms which have an annex leading from them the cost will be approximately £695. MAGNUMS
Magnums make a great first impression and these five look and taste impressive. WORDS: Sam Wylie-Harris
J
ust in time for the festive season, we’re fizzing with delight that so many of our favourite bubbles are available in bumper size. Helping to deliver the wow factor, a magnum makes a great first impression and, not only do they feel special and look impressive, they’re also hugely practical on a grand scale. The next size up from a 75cl bottle, 1.5 litres is the equivalent to two standard bottles and will serve 12 x 125ml glasses, and create some wonderful theatre while keeping your guests happy. To help guide you through the supermarket’s spectrum of sparkle, we caught up with five of our favourite retailers to hear their thoughts on how to double the drinking pleasure...
90 DECEMBER 2017
San Leo Prosecco DOC Magnum, Italy “We’ve seen an increase in magnum sales over the last few years and not just at Christmas. Magnums of red, white and fizz are all popular at this time of year, with the San Leo Prosecco topping the list of bestsellers,” says Becky Hull, champagne and sparkling buyer, Waitrose. “It’s the perfect party drink. A show-stopping bottle bursting with citrusrich character and bundles of charm.” £20.99, Waitrose M&S Prosecco Magnum, Italy “Magnums are the perfect party piece, they add that extra sparkle to the festive dinner table and really set the tone of a special occasion,” says Emma Dawson, M&S wine buyer. “Any wine ages more slowly in a magnum, which also means you can count on them to show wines at their best. With sparkling wines this means they preserve their fruit flavours really well. “Prosecco without a doubt will be our biggest seller this Christmas. Our customers love that fizz in any shape or size. But why stop with a magnum when you can also buy a jeroboam (the equivalent of four bottles or three litres)?” However, you may need a strong person to lift the bottle and pour. £18 from £21, December 5-January 1, Marks & Spencer Tesco Finest Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Magnum, Italy “We are excited to offer two of our fantastic proseccos in magnum format,” says Rob Dixon, champagne and sparkling buyer, Tesco. “Large
format bottles will bring excitement and show to any party this season, and our Tesco Finest Valdobbiadene Prosecco Magnum is cheaper than buying two bottles, and you can still fit it in your fridge, unlike some of the larger formats” A quality prosecco, it’s utterly delicious with plenty of white orchard fruits and pretty aromatics. £19, Tesco, in-store only Taste the Difference Cremant de Loire NV, Magnum, France Sainsbury’s Cremant de Loire launched last autumn in time for the Christmas party season and this year they’re selling it in a magnum - it makes an affordable French alternative to Champagne. The chenin blanc based bubbles are made in the same way as champagne using the methode traditionnelle and it’s rich on the palate, yet has a zesty apple freshness. Perfect served as an aperitif with canapes and party bites. £22, Sainsbury’s, in-store only Henri Delattre Champagne Magnum, France For an attention seeker that boasts good lineage, Lidl have it nailed with their Henri Delattre champers. “If an occasion is made more special by a bottle of champagne, imagine the impact of a magnum. Perfect for Christmas festivities, this is an attractive, tasty champagne with a dry finish - great on its own or with savoury canapes,” says Richard Bampfield, master of wine consultant. Chin, chin! £29.99, in-store from November 30, Lidl, in-store only

RESTAURANT REVIEW
THE RAMBLERS REST, Chislehurst
This month, Food editor Regan Anderton has visited The Ramblers Rest to give you her view on their menu. Other local restaurant reviews, recipes and dinner party game ideas can be found at www.whatiatelastnight.com Ambiance Having recently undergone a pretty major refurbishment, The Ramblers Rest is now bright, welcoming, and slightly more modern - but it’s still retained its cosy ‘proper’ pub charm. We visited on a Sunday when the new wooden bar was lined with crips and cheese for people to help themselves to, and fans were enjoying the football on the big screens.
Service The bar staff were very welcoming and friendly. We ordered our food at the bar, and it was served to our table, with additional drink orders taken, and delivered to us with the food. We were also advised on menu suggestions - the dessert was a great recommendation!
Food The menu available is traditional pub fayre, with roasts served on Sundays, and a children’s menu also available. To start, we enjoyed the torpedo

prawns coated in crispy panko breadcrumbs and served with a sweet chilli sauce. For main, we had to go with the roast beef - perfectly pink beef, served with a generous helping of roast potatoes, seasonal veg, a good Yorkshire pudding, and a boat of gravy. For dessert, we shared apple strudel with custard - a nice warm cinnamon glow with soft apples, and delicious sugar coated pastry.
Drink A well stocked bar, with a good selection of spirits, beers, and wines. We started with a Hendricks and tonic, then opted for a glass of red Rioja to accompany the roast beef. 5 Mill Place, London, Chislehurst BR7 5ND

Bromley Churchill Theatre Bar & Kitchen High street, Bromley This month, Food editor Regan Anderton has visited The Bromley Churchill Theatre Bar & Kitchen to give you her view on their menu. Other local restaurant reviews, recipes and dinner party game ideas can be found at www.whatiatelastnight.com Ambiance After running a British tapas bar for a while now, the Churchill Theatre have changed their restaurant area to a carpeted, restaurant-style bar and kitchen. We visited on a Wednesday evening before going to see a fab performance of a Miss Marple mystery ‘A murder is announced’.
Service The bar and waitressing staff were all extremely friendly and welcoming. We were also told that if we’d like to enjoy our dessert at the interval with the rest of our drinks, that the staff would arrange for a table outside for us to do so - it was a great way to enjoy the rest of the meal, and meant that we didn’t have to worry about queuing for drinks or ice cream in the interval!
Food A small, but perfectly formed crowd pleasing 94 DECEMBER 2017
menu is available - in addition to a great looking children’s menu. We opted to share a starter of baked camembert with rosemary and garlic, served with caramelised onion, and slices of warm, fresh sun-dried tomato and oregano bloomer to dip in. For main, the waitresses recommendation of salmon and champagne fishcake was delicious - with an oozy sauced centre, and served with baby new potatoes, and green beans in a caper and lemon dressing. Our dessert was waiting for us in the interval - the favourite being a delicious lemon cheesecake with berries.
Drink A good selection of spirits, beers, and wines. We started with prosecco to enjoy with our baked camembert, and an amaretto on ice to enjoy in the interval with the delicious cheesecake. Churchill Theatre, High Street, Bromley BR1 1HA
