he Churchill Theatre has launched their Autumn Season with a programme of shows that offer something for everyone. The line-up includes everything from dance and stand-up comedy, to drama, tribute acts, national touring productions and big, all-singing, all-dancing musicals! September holds not only the multi-awardwinning Blood Brothers, a moving story of twins separated at birth who grow up on different sides of the tracks, but also Cilla, based on the early life of the iconic Cilla Black and featuring her greatest hits such as ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’ and ‘Alfie’. Also on offer is the hilarious musical comedy, Rock of Ages, a LA love story set to over 25 classic rock anthems that will have you dancing in the aisles. The smash-hit Madagascar - The Musical starring X Factor winner and Bromley local Matt Terry provides a great option for a family outing, with a magical, musical stage adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s award-winning children’s book The Gruffalo’s Child also on offer for younger audiences. Further family shows include Milkshake! Live, Peppa Pig’s Adventure and the studio Christmas show, The Owl and the
Pussycat. As the long nights draw in, a brand-new adaptation of the classic thriller, Dracula, comes to the theatre. This is a brand-new multi-sensory stage adaptation of the iconic vampire novel by Bram Stoker and features breath-taking illusions and spine chilling effects. Comedy fans will be pleased to see that Gary Lucy stars as Gaz in Simon Beaufoy’s heart-warming comedy The Full Monty. He appears alongside an all-star cast and the show features an unforgettable soundtrack of hits by Donna Summer, Tom Jones and Hot Chocolate. In November the theatre will present the premiere of a new production of Doctor Dolittle starring Mark Williams, of The Fast Show, Dr Who and Harry Potter fame, as well as Vicky Entwistle and Brian Capron. This new stage production with stunning visuals and fantastic puppetry promises to be an evening of spectacular entertainment for all the family and coincides with 50th anniversary celebrations of the original film starring Rex Harrison. The show will feature the same songs, including the Academy Award-winning ‘Talk To The Animals’. The jewel in the season’s crown is the spectacular family pantomime, Cinderella, with Birds of a Feather star Lesley Joseph, spreading her magic and festive cheer in the role of Fairy Godmother. Packed with all of the traditional pantomime ingredients audiences expect, Cinderella features laugh-out-loud comedy, stunning scenery, beautiful costumes and plenty of boos and hisses - you shall go to the ball this Christmas! real taste of india in Bromley “Visited Masala dabbas on Orpington High street for first time a few nights ago. as a frequent visitor to india, the highlight of the restaurant has to be the food. Often it’s difficult to find authentic indian dishes - however Masala dabbas has hit the right note in serving true indian cuisine outside the usual baltis/kormas. We started with the nimmakaya chicken - 3 healthy sized chops cooked to juicy tenderness was a great way to begin. portion sizes continued to please throughout - happily the prawn main we had didn’t skimp on the prawns and managed to retain a seafood flavour - not an easy thing to get right with the bold flavours of indian cuisine. We also shared a tasty lamb biryani. The naans too were warm and fresh having come straight out of an indian tandoor. Overall the food was excellent, and though pricier than most local curry houses, the tastes served up were a cut above the usual, and comparable (if not a shade better) to food i’ve eaten at more celebrated restaurants such as dishoom. ambiance-wise the restaurant has a clean and pleasing decor, with a semi-open kitchen to give you a glimpse at the culinary work. Anthony Scragg, Managing Director Since the Scragg family bought the Spa Hotel in 2007, how has the food offering changed? Since 2007 The Spa has changed immensely. We have refurbished the hotel to a high standard, transforming the public areas into contemporary spaces whilst keeping in mind the age and grandeur of the building. Locals still walk into the hotel gasping at how much The Spa has transformed over the last 10 years and it’s so well received. We have, over time, modernised the food offering here as well, creating Zagatos Brasserie for a relaxed dining experience and introducing our impressive outdoor pizza oven on our terrace which is totally unique. 46 AUGUST 2018
What food experience does the Spa Hotel have to offer people who aren’t guests at the hotel? This is a great place to come for breakfast, lunch or dinner even if you are not a hotel guest. We are easy walking distance to the town, but far enough out if you want to escape the busy centre, and our stunning grounds make for a peaceful walk before or after you dine. We also serve Afternoon Tea in our delightful Orangery, which you can combine with a visit to our spa for treatments or a dip in the pool. We have also improved users experience with a new website where bookings can be made online. Our main aim at the moment is to increase the number of local customers visiting us, whether it’s for a meal, just a drink or even a walk in the gardens, we want customers to see us as more than just a hotel.

What exciting food and drink events have you got coming up? We are so excited to be hosting the main stage of Local & Live Festival on Mon 27th Aug on our grounds. We will have a host of food and drink stalls running alongside our pizza oven, plus face painting for kids and of course fabulous live music from talented local artists & bands. The event is free to enter and is such a great day out. It’s also a great opportunity for us to welcome local people who may not have been to the hotel for some time so they can also see how much things have changed and how much there is to enjoy here. Our grounds are also an amazing space to hire privately for BBQ’s, team building, birthday parties and of course weddings. What stands out about the food options available for weddings at the Spa Hotel? We have a number of delicious menus for couples to choose from for their big day, and besides this we also give Brides and Grooms the opportunity to create a bespoke wedding breakfast menu tailored to their requirements with the help of our Head Chef. We work with local suppliers to ensure our dishes are of the highest quality whist all tasting impeccable, regardless of the vast number of dishes being prepared.

options from traditional and formal dining to more contemporary relaxed offerings, plus al fresco dining in the form of our pizza oven as well as light bites and nibbles available on our terrace or in the lobby. One of our USP’s has to be our Afternoon Tea, it’s completely unique and no one locally is offering anything similar. What makes the Spa Hotel a stand out destination for local people looking for a meal out? I think the thing that sets us apart from others is the variety of options available here; you could dine here seven days a week if you wanted to and have seven completely different but equally exquisite dining experiences, you may opt for a formal Sunday lunch, pizza in the gardens, fish and chips in the Brasserie or tea and cake in the lobby and so on. Our menus also seasonally so it’s rare that you’ll ever see the same menu twice. Looking forward, what’s next for food at the Spa Hotel? What’s new and popular in Aesthetic treatments? While demand for non-surgical treatments has steadily increased, interest in cosmetic surgery procedures has declined by 8% over the past year, the number of female facelifts declining by as much as 44% and brow lifts reducing by 31% according to the latest statistics from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). he fastest growing cosmetic trend of 2017 was non-surgical nose jobs, with an increase of 29%. The treatment was particularly popular among those aged 18 to 24. While injecting dermal fillers to a nose can not decrease the size of the nose, it can reshape or camouflage imperfections to achieve the desired look and lasts 12-18 months. Other popular non-surgical trends include PRP and Profhilo. “It’s all about stimulating our own cells to naturally reverse some of the signs of aging”. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP, most famous for its use in the so-called “vampire facial”) is plasma from your own blood which contains concentrated platelets, which are the cells that heal tissue. It is the latest medical treatment to cross over into the world of aesthetics - long established as a treatment for healing wounds, PRP has also been adopted by sports medicine and orthopedic specialities. the experts to share their advice for self-tan virgins.

verybody knows at least one: the fake tan-aholic who always looks beautifully bronzed even in the dead of winter. For those who’ve been slathering on the dihydroxyacetone (that’s the active ingredient, FYI) since their teens, achieving that just-been-onhols glow is a doddle, but what if you’ve always been too scared to venture down the self-tan route? If visions of ending up looking like David Dickinson or Ross from Friends after his spray tan disaster have deterred you, you needn’t worry - a subtle life-like tan is easily achievable at home. “It doesn’t have to be scary,” says Carly Hobbs, tanning expert and Sienna X brand ambassador. “If you’re new to tanning, take things slowly and start with the best kind of products - and preparation is everything.” So how exactly do you prepare and what are the best tanning products for newbies? Here, Hobbs and two other tanning pros share their top tips for before, during and after your tan...

Before: How to prepare your skin for fake tan “For as long as possible pre-tanning, exfoliate and moisturise as much as possible to keep skin soft, supple and tan-ready,” says Hobbs. “On the day of your tan, exfoliate to get rid of that last bit of dead skin cell build up.” Waxing should be done 24 hours before tanning and shaving 12 hours before: “Leaving these time frames allows the follicles, from where the hairs are whipped out, time to calm down and the pores on the surrounding skin to close so you don’t get a spotty tan,” she explains. “Apply a coat of nail polish to your nails on your hands and feet, as this will prevent tan from staining the nail plate,” says Marissa Carter, founder of tanning brand Cocoa Brown. If you have dark circles under your eyes, Carter advises applying Vaseline to stop the tan from further darkening that area: “You can also add a small amount of petroleum jelly through your eyebrows to prevent the tan from discolouring them too.”

the best products for beginners During: The best tanning technique While moisturising in the week leading up to your tan is important, skip the lotion on the day: “Ensure your skin is free from any products, moisturisers, oils, make-up and deodorant on the day you tan as this can affect the final results,” warns Jayne Cooper, St Tropez skin-finishing expert. “St Tropez Gradual Tan One Minute Everyday Pre-Shower Tanning Mousse is the perfect product for beginners. Simply apply to dry skin with or without a mitt, leave for just one minute and shower as normal and your tan will develop over the next eight hours.” If you are using a product that requires a longer development time, you must use a mitt. “Apply your chosen tan in upward sweeping movements, overlapping each area,” Cooper recommends. “Let your tan dry before having a drink or brushing your teeth as accidental drips may wash away the colour. This also applies to tanning with wet hair,” says Carter. Same goes for doing the dishes, and you can’t get sweaty so exercise is out of the question. “Sit back and relax in loose clothes as your tan develops, ideally go bra-less too so you don’t dent or mark your gorgeous glow,” Hobbs says. “Have a quick warm, not hot, shower after your development time, but don’t use shower gel all over in the shower. Instead keep soap or cleanser to just bits and pits so not to strip off all your hard bronzing work.”

After: How to treat your tan So you’ve prepped thoroughly, tanned carefully and now you’re bronzed to perfection. Well done! Now what? “The first time you shower after you’ve applied your tan, use shower gel but don’t exfoliate your skin,” warns Carter. “Moisturise daily with an oil-free moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and gently exfoliate every two to three days, which can extend your tan by up to three days,” Cooper says. “Self tans will last on average five to seven days depending on which product you’re using.” Once it’s faded, exfoliating or using a tan remover mitt will remove any last traces. “Don’t forget your SPF when going out even when you’re tanning - faking it doesn’t protect you from the sun,” Hobbs says. “And if ever you want to strip off your tan, dive into the swimming pool. Project Plants), which ones are currently the most popular: “The popularity of individual plants is constantly changing, because the green trend is not weakening, and green people are hungry for more and more interesting species. Monstera, pilea, in other words, small coin, different varieties of beautifully-colored kalatei, as well as sweet succulents, are invariably very popular. Oxalis, the leaves of which resemble butterflies, has recently entered salons. A good choice for peaceful sleep also includes aloe vera and the jade plant that not only do not take away oxygen, but produce it to make us sleep even better.

Schmidt open new showroom in Sevenoaks T

The showroom is owned by husband and wife team Adrian and Janice Tobitt, and they have employed Janice’s son Ben as well as Monika as sales and design consultants. Janice was an executive secretary at BP for 36 years, so also brings a wealth of business experience to the showroom.
