‘Into the Open’, an exhibition by Harpenden born sculptor Keziah Burt and artist Miranda Carter, is inspired by a mutual love of open water and a desire to be immersed in nature. Beautiful, atmospheric paintings create a calm inviting space, whilst bronze and ceramic sculptures invite you to touch their elegant abstract forms. The pop-up exhibition in London’s Shepherd Market, from 6 -11 September is well worth heading to town for, particularly if you love beautiful art or are simply searching for that perfect investment piece for your home. As you enter the gates of Cucumber Fields you’re compelled to take a slow inhale. The exhale which follows instantly leaves you feeling lighter. And so it begins, the serenity of this spectacular space slowly works its way into your system. It’s the view that captures you first. The healing greens and expansive vista open you up to the beauty and breadth of these epic natural surroundings - simply standing here, with this view, is good for the soul.

THE DETAILS

Jaguar Classic has completed building the first C-type Continuation. The strictly limited production run is well underway at Jaguar’s Classic Works, Coventry, and the first vehicle has finished shakedown testing ready for delivery to an excited customer. Each C-type Continuation undergoes at least 250 miles of physical testing by Jaguar Classic engineers, following a build process that requires 3,000 hours of intensive and highly skilled craft. The first customer Continuation is finished in Pastel Green with Suede Green leather seats and is inspired by the original Jaguar C-type which won the 224-mile long, 50-lap sports car race at the Reims Grand Prix Meeting on 29 June 1952. This vehicle was the first C-type fitted with disc brakes to win in international competition. It was after driver Stirling Moss persuaded Jaguar to implement the pioneering technology it had in development. The victory at Reims was a glimpse to the C-type’s dominance at the following year’s Le Mans 24 Hour, and Jaguar’s continued supremacy in 1950’s sports car racing. All C-type Continuation models will be built to the specification of the 1953 Works C-types. The Jaguar Classic team has helped bring Jaguar’s heritage to life using extensive research, modern technology and engineering expertise. With advanced CAD modelling, each one is then crafted using the same build methods and techniques to ensure the limited-run Continuations honour the delineation of the original C-type.

Customers have 12 exterior heritage colours to choose from including the Pastel Green of this car, British Racing Green and Pastel Blue with contrasting roundel, as well as the opportunity to select their own interior specification from a range of eight leather hues. The Continuation models are FIA-approved and eligible to participate in all FIA Historic events, including the Jaguar Classic Challenge, which takes place at a variety of different racetracks including Le Mans and Silverstone. The limited run of C-type Continuations is available now.

Her sculptural collection explores the desire to touch, connect and escape into the wild waters. The figurative bronzes evoke sensations of weightlessness and yielding to the elements. Singular divers drift or fall into the water, couples embrace, a tangle of limbs and salt sea. Intimate. Timeless. Inspired by her own experiences beneath the waves in search of clarity. “I loved creating my own collection for this exhibition, it is a very personal response to the sense of yearning I felt during the pandemic to escape into the water.”

The paintings are a process of adding, concealing, and revealing lines and gestures like a conversation inviting the viewer to participate in their own personal interpretation.

“My work is a response to my need to ground myself by physically experiencing the water and land beneath me. I am drawn to awe-inspiring light and landscape and aim to recreate the feeling you experience when encountering something bigger than yourself. Each painting has its own path and the end point is only clear when the balance of light, colour, and shape are in harmony.”

Miranda has exhibited widely and is represented by galleries across the country. Original paintings are held by private collectors but you are able to buy special prints of her paintings in national stores of the luxury interiors company Neptune. To enjoy the exhibition in person come to the Mayfair exhibition, or view their works online. “I work with private clients to create a bespoke artwork that will be treasured by their family for generations. Portraiture is story telling at its best, whether that be a figurative bronze of a grandchild or a portrait of a new mother. These are moments to treasure, Miranda’salways.”workhas been described as a ‘visual breath of fresh air’. To find material for her paintings she explores the feeling of being ‘earthed’ and connected to the landscape, immersing herself in the natural world. She walks and swims in all weathers and, like Keziah, is a passionate cold-water swimmer. “The response of the mind and body to these feelings of exposure help to leave behind the chaos of a busy brain and rebalance the interactions of modern life with interactions on a much deeper level.” Her paintings evolve through a combination of drawing and painting, mixing bold marks with fine lines. She explores where and how a line or brushstroke starts and finishes, noting the way pressure, mood and medium effects them.

NEW HYBRID CHARTER MARKET TO BE LAUNCHED IN SEPTEMBER“I’mabsolutelydelightedwearefinallyabletopushforwardwithahybridMarket”

“We’ll now have the best of both worlds – the reassuring sight of the return of stalls in uniform St Albans heritage colours in St Peters Street together with gazebos.” To provide the hybrid Market, 80 new stalls will be purchased by the Council to replace the current ones which are run-down while 35 gazebos have already been bought.

One or two trailers, required to transport the new equipment from storage to the Market site, will be acquired to replace the 16 vehicles that were previously used. Tenders are being sought for a contractor to put up and dismantle the Market stalls and gazebos. This task was undertaken by the Council’s own workforce before the pandemic when only gazebos brought by the traders were allowed to reduce the risk of COVID contamination. Councillor Donald added: “Our Charter Market dates back centuries. It is one of our City’s great attractions and we are determined to ensure it has a sustainable and exciting future ahead of it.”

It has decided on the hybrid format after consulting with traders, shoppers and other interested groups with the Market relaunching on Wednesday 7 September. Councillor Robert Donald, Chair of the Regeneration and Business Committe, said: “I’m absolutely delighted we are finally able to push forward with a hybrid Market.

44 SEPTEMBER 2022 LOVE LOCAL Historic St Albans Charter Market is to be relaunched in a new hybrid form involving a mixture of traditional stalls and gazebos. sportsmen and artists, and you can see why Bedford School was crowned Independent Boys’ School of the Year. “It is our belief that every boy should be happy and successful, in that order, and our strong boarding ethos is fundamental to achieving this result.” bedfordschool.org.uk

64 SEPTEMBER 2022 EDUCATION Bedford School is a boarding school first and foremost; with boarders and day boys alike benefitting from a thriving boarding ethos and a community that gives a heartbeat to the school in a way that nothing else can. Recent research undertaken at Bedford School revealed that boarders were the happiest boys. This can be attributed to the fact they are able to experience the school to its fullest. Remove a time-consuming daily commute and boys can maximise every single day, explore the countless opportunities on offer and flourish in a nurturing environment where they are looked after as individuals by their teachers, who live and work with them around the clock. The school day is less frantic and more evenly paced for boarders, which results in a calmer and more productive environment.Combinethis approach with an unstoppable drive to raise good people first and foremost, which then allows boys to thrive as academics,

Mr Symes concluded, “As we look forward to celebrating our 75th Anniversary next year I’m delighted that we continue to retain many of the school’s founding traditions whilst delivering a forward-thinking curriculum that prepares the boys for the wider world, leaving Aldwickbury as good people.”

seeks to educate the boys on life in the wider community.Theinnovative additions to the curriculum launch as Headmaster Paul Symes starts his second year in position. Commenting on the programme he said, “The longer school day at Aldwickbury allows us to add extra lessons to the timetable without sacrificing any of the core curriculum subjects. As the world of work is ever changing it’s crucial that we not only ensure the boys excel academically but that we also prepare them for the future. When boys leave Aldwickbury aged 13 we want them to not only be ready for the next stage of their academic journey but also equipped with the skills that will enable them to be even better prepared for their senior school and the ever-changing world of work” Aldwickbury School was recently inspected the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) and received the highest grade of ‘Excellent’ for both inspection quality categories – ‘pupils’ academic and other achievements’ and ‘pupils’ personal development’. Their report highlighted the school’s excellent pastoral care as a platform to allow the boys to show, ‘excellent knowledge, understanding and skills … demonstrated across all areas of learning in the school, supported by a broad curriculum, which allows pupils to satisfy a clear thirst for knowledge.’

There will also be more opportunities for pupils to acquire the skills to help self-regulate their own mental health and well-being with the addition of yoga, mindfulness and mental health first aid to the timetable.Thecommunity element of the curriculum will continue to build on the school’s partnerships with local schools, charities and groups. The start of a new academic year sees the launch of a new exciting Future Thinking Curriculum for Aldwickbury School. Robotics, podcasting, videography and outdoor learning are just some of the new lessons on the timetable for the Boys Pre-Prep and Prep School in Harpenden. The additional lessons will complement the traditional curriculum from Reception to Year 8 whilst providing opportunities for their pupils to experience and develop skills in the 4 C’s of 21st Century learning. The 4 C’s - Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Communication, were first developed by Apple, Microsoft and 20 other organisations in collaboration with the US Ministry of Education and education experts. Their body of research recognised that these four core skills were essential for students to succeed both in school and the modern workplace. Based on the 4C’s the new lessons at Aldwickbury will equip the boys with a variety of skills and appeal to all interests. Tech lovers will have an opportunity to try robotics and coding, creatives will learn design software, photography and videography and lovers of the great outdoors will have opportunities to learn bushcraft skills and spend time in the school’s eco-garden.

68 SEPTEMBER 2022 EDUCATION Exam results days are a rite of passage. All children, and their parents, have to go through them. The exams themselves are bad enough, but then there is the waiting – and inevitably the more time that elapses the easier it is to focus on the things which might have gone wrong in the exam hall. I remember it from my own school days, and as a teacher I re-live it every year. As a parent, this year I experienced the double whammy of GCSEs and A Levels in the same year! Some students perform exceptionally well in exams, others - despite just as much effort – do not. At Mount House we celebrate all our students’ achievements, no matter how ‘good’ the outside world might judge them to be. We are a small school and we know our students well. We know that our results will go up and down in each year, depending on the ability of our mixed and inclusive cohort. Our expectations are clear and they are high: we expect that every student will do their best, will focus in lessons, will complete AIMING HIGH homework and we encourage them to ask for help when they need it. If they do that, they will achieve results of which we are all proud. Of course teenagers don’t always work as hard “At Mount House we celebrate all our matterachievements, students’nohow‘good’theoutsideworldmightjudgethemtobe”

SEPTEMBER 2022 69 as they can, and of course things can go wrong in the exam hall – but learning to fail is also a rite of passage. As a parent, I do know it is terribly hard to ‘allow’ your child to fail. As a teacher, I know how important it is that children get things wrong, because without this they cannot learn to deal with adversity. As adults we all need to know how to manage set-backs, how to pick ourselves up, how to focus on what we might do differently nextWetime.allknow there is more to life than exams. Exams are a blunt instrument of judgement and no young person should be made to feel inadequate on the basis of their exam results. I congratulate those whose children have achieved great results, and I commiserate with those whose children have not. I urge you to remind your children that exams can always be re-taken, or an alternative route can be followed. I urge you to celebrate your child’s other achievements, in art, sport, music, drama and good citizenship. “We are delighted with the achievements of our students and proud not just of their results but also the young adults they have become.”

On our Assessment Day on Satursday 7th January, your son/daughter will have the opportunity to visit our school, set in beautiful surroundings in Hadley Wood. They will sit exams in English, Maths and non-verbal reasoning and they will also take part in some exciting group activities, enjoy lunch in our Treetops restaurant and meet me and some of our teaching staff. We hope that this will give them an idea of what it is like to be a student at Mount House School.

Small class sizes, nurturing environment and excellent co-curricular activities - Here at Mount House, small class sizes are the norm with an impressive co -curricular programme and students are supported to take responsibility for their own development. We aim for each child to be nurtured and supported so they feel safe, valued and enabled to fulfil their potential. Outstanding results - Mount House is a happy and successful school, with an excellent record of GCSE and A-level results and an outstanding record of students achieving places at top universities. We are very proud of our school and if you have not yet visited us, we would be delighted to welcome you and your son/daughter to our next Open Morning on Saturday 24th September. mounthouse.org.uk

Scholarships - Mount House offers a small number of scholarships each year to students who demonstrate strong academic ability as well as a commitment to the wider life of the school through the co-curricular programme, particularly in sport and the creative and performing arts.

Stagecoach gave Mara ‘creative courage for life’ and showed her that Urserla did not have hold of her tongue, as she feared being a fan of the Little Mermaid. With a decade of THE DETAILS

She sadly lost her father at twelve and found a new stage to release on the hockey pitch, which led her to compete for county. The move from Kensington Palace to Adelaide Cottage – a Grade II-listed four-bedroom house in Windsor’s private Home Park – is both nearer to William’s grandmother the Queen, who spends most of her time at Windsor Castle, and to Kate’s parents’ home in Bucklebury, Berkshire. to join Lambrook School near Ascot in September – along with their little brother Louis, aged four.

As Prince William and Kate’s three children prepare to move to a new school, an educational psychologist explains how to help kids cope with change.

“Changing schools is a major challenge for all children, whatever their age, as school takes up such a large and significant part of their lives and contributes so much to their development,” stresses educational psychologist Dr Kairen Cullen (drkairencullen.com).Theyoungroyaltrio

Continuity

Home Try to make sure everything at home is consistent, stable and comforting. “The familiar framework and routines of home provide comfort and reassurance when children are being tested by a new school environment,” she says.

Allowances

Even the toughest kids might need their mum and dad more than ever during this transition period when everything is changing. “This is a time for nurturing the child, so some extra special time, a few treats and lots of cuddles and kind words are called for.”

“KP [Kensington Palace] can be a bit of a fishbowl. They wanted to be able to give George, Charlotte and Louis a bit more freedom than they have living in central London. It’s very much a decision that’s been led by the kids.” But while the decision takes the Cambridges nearer to family and gives the children 52 acres of Berkshire countryside to run around in at Lambrook School, there is still some potential turmoil associated with upping sticks and leaving schoolfriends behind to start afresh in a new area.

Remember that change can be painful and destabilising as well as exciting and enhancing.

Growth Remember that children’s growth and development comes largely from the challenges they face, which are carefully eased by the adults in their lives, be they parents, carers, relatives or educational professionals. “The new school experience offers a lot of opportunities for everyone involved to work together in helping the child cope with the challenges,” Cullen explains. Expertise She stresses that although many professionals have great expertise in supporting children as they adapt to change and challenges, there are no better experts than their own parents. “Trust your hard-earned knowledge and the insights you’ve acquired over time in relation to your own child, but also ask for help as and when you consider it’s needed.”

won’t be alone in having to face challenges including joining existing social groups, breaking into established school sports teams, and becoming familiar with new teachers and teaching styles. Plenty of other kids face the same issues when they too move to a different area, for whatever reason. Here’s what Cullen advises parents to bear in mind when they try to help their children through the change from one school to another…

“We know as adults that if we’re undergoing major change in one area of our lives, we need to keep continuity in other parts as much as possible so we enjoy the change and don’t become too unsettled,” says Cullen, who stresses that this need for continuity applies even more to children, especially the very young.

Parents may need to cut children some slack when they’re finding their feet at a new school. “Make as many allowances as you can and modify your expectations of the usual behavioural standards as much as possible while your child settles in to their new school,” advises Cullen. Nurture

Merchant Taylors’ Prep School

erchant Taylors’ Prep School was created in 2015 as part of the alliance that was forged between Northwood Prep and Merchant Taylors’ School to provide a through school for boys aged 3 to 18. This has enabled us to continue to provide excellent education whilst developing our partnership with Merchant Taylors’ School. Our school is vibrant and dynamic and our pupils are educated by professional staff that provide a nurturing environment. We aim to instil values, such as compassion and respect, and learning dispositions, such as perseverance and independence, at the same time as ensuring the highest standards of academic achievements. We are proud that our school contains happy and confident pupils who are excited by the stimulating curriculum that we provide. Starting a new school is an exciting time, but it can also be a daunting time for parents and children as they prepare to adapt to a new way of life. Once families have made their school choice, parents often ask how they can help to get their child ready. This covers the practical questions from uniform and sports kits to bus routes and policies. Most school joining packs or handbooks will cover these off, but there are also the more complex questions to consider around getting children ready socially, as well as academically, for their new school. Specifically, when a child is starting a new school with no, or few of their existing cohort, parents will often want to know how the school’s ‘buddy’ system works, whereby they will pair a child up with another, to provide support socially, come September. Parents are also keen to understand how the school will look after their child and get to know them personally. Questions will be asked in the lead up to the induction and parents and children will feel reassured if the school has a

ABOUT ST SCHOOLMARGARET’S

By Lara Péchard, Head at St Margaret’s School in Hertfordshire

Getting children socially ready for joining a new school this September

St Margaret’s School is an independent day and boarding school for pupils aged 2 to 18 years. Based in Bushey, Hertfordshire, the school is steeped in history and is among one of the oldest in the UK dating back to 1749. Offering a range of flexible boarding options for both UK and international pupils from the age of 11 years, the school is set over 60 acres of beautiful grounds and places its renowned pastoral care and proven track record of academic success at the heart of its culture and ethos. With a rich programme of extra-curricular activities, its pupils are encouraged to discover their talents in a caring environment that fosters a genuine enthusiasm for learning in an evolving world filled with complex challenges and exciting new possibilities. stmargarets-school.org.uk programme and channel of communication to connect with them post offer and before starting the academic year. If specific learning support is needed or there is a pastoral situation to be managed, it can be helpful for schools to link parents up with experts in the school community and to start preparing ahead of time so that September lands more softly. Moving up, or moving schools is a big transition for children and helping a child and their family to feel more connected to the school and to other families before they arrive, is a big positive. Yet most important of all is the social aspect around joining a new school or moving up a year, this is perhaps even more important than any academic consideration. If a child can make the move smoothly, and settle in and make friends quickly, then academically speaking, the rest should follow. A happy child always makes greater progress with their learning, so the more time a family can spend in their new school before their child starts, the better.

104 SEPTEMBER 2022 HOME & PROPERTY Say ‘marble’ and the likelihood is something white and grey comes to mind, something with delicate veining and a luxurious, chic appeal which hovers somewhere between the grandeur of ancient Rome and the backdrop to so many Instagram flatlay photos.

This is where statement stone enters the equation in unique, can-that-really-have-formed-naturally colours that tick both the eco and the exciting boxes. Hewn from earth yet simultaneously ornamental and with undeniable wow-factor, brightly coloured stone both makes an impact in the home as well as imbuing a space with a soothing sense of the outside. Be gone gentle, subtle shades – the rocks of 2022 are bold, vibrant and ready to shake things up.

The Salone presentations echoed these dual desires – materials were natural, sustainable and earth-friendly, channelling the organic as well as exaggerating and playing with it. Colours were based around nature but not afraid to go bright, combining pops of pigment and energy with the tactile and the organic.
