The country clothing and lifestyle store offers you a wide selection of luxury products for both ladies and gentlemen. Everything from jackets, hats and wellington boots to hand crafted leather gifts and accessories. Where possible the collections stocked by Carl Russell and Co Gunmakers are from small businesses not available in high street stores or brands that provide practical clothing for a purpose whilst still offering that countryside elegance, that is so often required. The newly expanded gunroom offers over 200 shotguns, rifles and air rifles from an extensive range of makers including Beretta and Caesar Guerini to famous English makers such as Purdey, Henry Atkin and Holland and Holland. attlers Green Veterinary Centre opened its doors on the 15th July 2019. They are extremely excited to be a part of the warm and welcoming Radlett community and a part of the Battlers Green Farm Rural shopping village. It’s fair to say the landscape of veterinary care is changing and changing rapidly. Large corporates have and continue to buy-up veterinary practices all over the UK. This can mean the loss of that personalised warm touch you expect at your vets. The Head Vet and Owner, Dr Jonathan Rubin originally came over from South Africa having qualified from the prestigious and world renowned Onderstepoort - Faculty of Veterinary Science, He has lived and worked in the UK for the last 16 years and in his time in the UK he has worked for large veterinary groups, large charity clinics like the PDSA and RSPCA, on a locum basis, for smaller vet surgeries and also as an out-of-hours emergency on-call vet . He lives in North London, with his wife and 2 young kids as well as rescue cat Marvin and rescue dog Billy. Battlers Green Veterinary Centre are proudly independent and corporate free. The aim is to provide affordable first-class care to both the animals and their owners in the brand-new, purpose built, state of the art veterinary centre. Dr Rubin wanted the premises to be spacious and modern but still welcoming and most importantly well planned for patient and owner comfort, safety and care. The layout includes a spacious reception area

‘SELECTED BY KATE MOSS’ makes UK debut
V
isitors to last month’s Festival of Fashion Pure London, were the first in the UK to view ‘Selected by Kate Moss’ the new collection from one of Scandinavia’s fastest growing labels, NIKKIE. Created by Dutch designer Nikkie Plesse in 2012, the collaboration with British supermodel Kate Moss debuted for the first time in the UK at London’s inspirational festival of fashion. It’s the first time the collection has been seen in Moss’s home market and is likely to have a huge impact. After modeling for years for her own fashion brand, NIKKIE decided she wanted something new and different and asked the one and only top model Kate Moss. In 2017, NIKKIE launched the first ‘Selected by Kate Moss’ collection and now Kate Moss is the international face of NIKKIE. The collection represents the tough yet feminine style of Kate, and features jackets, dresses, skirts, trousers and tops. For its SS20 season, the collection has a strong focus on ‘country’, impactful in black and white, with embroidered materials and feminine shapes. The high-end designs are offered in lavishing materials combined with statement details. This 28 SEPTEMBER 2019
ABOUT KATE MOSS
strength, combined with a vast array of stylish looks and polished silhouettes makes NIKKIE the solution for women who are looking for something between high-end and high-street fashion. Nikkie says of the collaboration; “Kate Moss has always been the ultimate embodiment of style. She personifies precisely what I want to express through my fashion label; she is strong and tough but at the same time feminine and sexy. We are growing NIKKIE worldwide and couldn’t wait to present it to the UK market at Pure London.” I am incredibly proud of the fact that supermodel Kate is the face of NIKKIE. Seeing how we immediately got on so well during our first meeting and knowing that she is now the face of NIKKIE, is a dream come true.“ NIKKIE has shaken up the European and Asian fashion industry with her feminine, sexy, elegant and cool designs, and is one of the fastest growing Dutch fashion brands. NIKKIE has a retail and showroom network of over 600 high-end boutiques, brand stores, and shops in department stores across Europe and Asia. With her luxury fashion collections, NIKKIE provides modern women with the right look for every day-to-night occasion. NIKKIE is now distributed and sold in over 15 countries. After spending decades posing in front of the camera, Moss began working behind the camera as well. And she’s still making a major impact on fashion with numerous deals across both the mass and premium markets. Kate Moss also launched her own talent agency in 2016. www.selectedbykatemoss.com www.purelondon.com
Katherine Ann Moss was born 16 January 1974 in Croydon, Surrey. She was discovered in 1988 aged just 14 by Sarah Doukas, founder of Storm Model Management, in New York City. Corinne Day shot black-and-white photographs of her for The Face when she was 16. Moss then featured in the Levi’s campaign ‘Levis for Girls’ with great success and went on to become the “anti-supermodel” of the 1990s in contrast to the models of the moment, such as Cindy Crawford, Elle Macpherson, Claudia Schiffer and Naomi Campbell, who were known for their curvaceous and tall figures. She has been on front covers and in fashion spreads for most magazines around the globe. She has been on the cover of British Vogue 30 times. In 2012, Moss appeared in the video of George Michael’s White Light and performed with Naomi Campbell in the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games on 12 August 2012. She posed nude for the 60thanniversary issue of Playboy in December 2013 and that same month, she received a Special Recognition award at the British Fashion Awards to acknowledge her contribution to fashion during her 25-year career. Kate has been praised for her involvement and support to a number of charities. She helped launch the SamandRuby charity in March 2006. The charity was to provide funding for the education and shelter of Thai children. The charity is named after a friend of Moss’s, Samantha Archer Fayet, and her 6-month-old daughter Ruby Rose who were killed by the tsunami while visiting Thailand. Moss also supports the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Hoping Foundation, the Lucie Blackman Trust, Make Poverty History, Comic Relief and Homes of Hope.

A new year at Edge Grove A
t the end of each school year we have the opportunity to reflect upon the previous year, celebrate successes and look ahead to new developments. So what have been the particular highlights for Edge Grove this past year? Education is about providing maximum opportunities and allowing children access to a wide range of experiences. Our overseas trips last year included a netball tour to Barbados, a cricket and music tour to Sri Lanka, a cultural trip to Paris and a ski trip to Italy. Add to this our annual Expedition Week for all pupils aged 7-13 which are designed to foster a sense of adventure, resilience, independence and collaboration, one begins to realise that exceptional lessons do not just happen in the classroom. The school has been as busy as ever and in all areas, from academic to cultural, from co-curricular to digital, pupils have been hugely involved and massively successful at both school, regional and national levels. Our Edge Grove Baccalaureate for Years 7 and 8 has enjoyed its third successful year and continues to be transformational in developing our pupils, the skills of leadership, critical thinking, communication and independence. This year the Edge Grove curriculum will include an expanded Foreign Languages timetable offering Mandarin, Japanese and Russian to name a few, as we strongly believe this is the best way to make the most of children’s innate ability to learn new sounds

and new languages. Engineering will also feature in the curriculum as we aim to equip our children with the skills that will be most useful to them in the future. And finally, after many years in the planning our wonderful new Lower School building will soon be opening and our Year 3 and 4 pupils will benefit from this exciting and very forward-thinking new learning environment. In an ever changing educational world, Edge Grove is passionate about embracing change and keeping abreast of modern educational theory. It is a school which takes great care to look after each individual and draw out their strengths. The outstanding pastoral care, enrichment program, creative arts and sport all help pupils to develop into well-rounded human beings. We want our children to be intellectually curious, to flounder intelligently, to be able to think for themselves and to challenge themselves academically in every sense, and always be keen to know and do more. From our regular booster sessions, carefully crafted programmes of study, inspirational trips and visits, individualized assessment and the tireless work of the teaching staff, our pupils are given tremendous opportunities to excel. Edge Grove welcomes prospective parents to visit the school and enjoy a tour of the wonderful facilities and beautiful grounds. The next Open Day is on Saturday 28th September. Outdoor Learning at Manor Lodge W
ith *1 in 10 of school aged children suffering from a diagnosable mental health condition, mental health issues must be at the forefront of educational planning. When you visit Manor Lodge, the outdoor learning environment is valued and encouraged as a space of learning. Our sedentary lifestyle and declining outdoor physical activity have far-reaching implications on children’s physical and mental health and must be addressed in the curriculum we offer our children. Our grounds are filled with spaces that allow children freedom to move safely and is a place where possibilities of adventure prevail. Nestled in our surroundings you will find a Woodland Garden; Forest Garden; Japanese Garden, Reading Garden as well as fields and play areas. The Woodland Garden is an area that our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children use each week to consolidate their learning and it also affords them the opportunity to develop their skills using tools. As their confidence grows, along with their curiosity about the environment around them, they relish the chance to be able to wander through the woods along the meandering trails with their friends. The Forest Garden for the Juniors is a more complex landscape and is the perfect progression from the Woodland Garden. This area is used not only for lessons every week, but is there to be enjoyed at break time as well. Here, the hidden curriculum that encourages listening skills, team work and leadership are all brought into play. Our ‘Space to Be’ Japanese Garden is where our children can practice quiet reflection during break as well as learning techniques in mindfulness during designated lesson time. Staff also use this area to consolidate the PHSEE curriculum and children learn positive Growth Mindset approaches to assist them in coping with life’s ‘ups and downs’. Built by parent and staff volunteers, it is 64 SEPTEMBER 2019
a testament to our school’s philosophy of enabling our children to appreciate the value of being in the moment without looking back at the past or worrying about the future. In focusing on the present moment our children are able to create a feeling of calm and balance. The latest addition to our collection of gardens is the Reading Garden. This decked area is enclosed with hedges that form ‘rooms’ that the children will use for English and Library lessons as well as during break time should they want a quiet place to read. At Manor Lodge, it is important that we build an environment where children can flourish and learn. Where well-being and happiness are not in the shadow of academic success. Both strands stand side by side and are of equal importance in helping create positive mind-sets and memories that will last a lifetime. www.manorlodgeschool.com

Exciting announcement for St Margaret’s School, Bushey
S
t Margaret’s School will begin its transition in January 2020 from a single sex, all girls school, to educating both girls and boys, in a move that seeks to embrace the modern educational world. Beginning in January 2020 with Reception, Years 1, 2 and Sixth Form, and the opening of a new Pre-Reception year, the school will emerge as fully co-educational across all year groups by 2022. The decision resonates strongly with the schools traditional roots and chimes with more contemporary views about the benefits of educating both genders together. St Margaret’s was originally established as a coeducational environment back in 1749 celebrating the education of both boys and girls together as equals before it evolved into single sex education in 1812. Drawing upon its varied history, this vision remains ever more relevant today as the school continues to prepare children to confidently take on the challenges of life together as young men and women in the modern world. Headmistress, Rose Hardy explained “The world is co-educational and mixing boys and girls together

St. Francis’ College for Girls I ncreasingly we find that girls’ only schools are disappearing from the options available for parents. Empirical research repeatedly demonstrates that there are better learning opportunities available to girls when they are educated with their peers. They can learn at the pace best suited to their developmental needs and enjoy the benefits of positive role models. Such opportunities enable girls to follow their interests free from stereotyping. In this busy, fast paced modern world, it is understandable that families want a one stop for all education. Another option is to consider boarding in a semi-rural environment where extra-curricular and academic interests are catered for. Here at St Francis’ College, girls receive a high quality holistic education and a friendly family style boarding community in Letchworth, the World’s First Garden City located only 35 minutes away from London in Hertfordshire, with the added bonus of excellent academic results.

Introducing… My very own facelift procedure (It’s non-surgical!)
Dr Rav i Jain
W
hen Lauren came to see me she was stuck in a rut. In her mid40s, she had been working in a professional field for several years. Although she was desperate to apply for more permanent and more senior jobs, she lacked the self-confidence to do so. Lauren was convinced that the loose skin on her face made her look far older than she really was, and that interviewers would discriminate against her because of her age. While she was desperate for a cosmetic procedure to tighten her skin and restore her looks, she was also very nervous about her colleagues knowing she’d had work done. It was vital, she said, that any change was as subtle as possible. In the meanwhile, she scoured the industry press for adverts for more senior positions – and applied for none of them. I have been developing my very own non-surgical face-lifting technique, called the R-Lift and the R Lift XL for a longer lasting results. I started thinking about the technique years ago, when I began seeing lots of people with what I call “the pillow look”. Their cheeks had been filled out in an effort to lift their skin, making them look, to my mind, a bit like hamsters. It was trendy at the time , but I knew that it wasn’t right for our patients, who wanted a much more natural look. Over the subsequent months, I have worked to develop a procedure that gave the same effect as a facelift, but without patients having to go under the knife; using a minimum number of needles; and at a fraction of the cost. Most importantly, it needed to leave patients looking normal – not fake. 82 SEPTEMBER 2019
With the R-Lift and the R Lift XL we inject small amounts of dermal fillers into as few as two points on either side of the face. Unlike ordinary fillers, we run a cannula beneath the skin’s surface, to release the fibrous bands that fuse skin to muscle and this fades deep wrinkles. The minimal use of needles means pain is unlikely - 99% of patients don’t require any anaesthetic and bruising is extremely rare. It also meant we could keep the cost down to £900 at the lower end. And the results? The R-Lift refreshes and restores your skin, making you look younger – but still like you. People won’t know you’ve had anything done, they’ll just think you’re looking great. Take Lauren, She had the R-Lift about 18 months ago, and hasn’t looked back since. Within weeks, she noticed such a difference that she had the confidence and self-assurance to apply for the jobs she had previously shied away from. That insecure and self- doubting professional who had approached me months aced an interview and is now a Senior Director.

I just learned about it a couple months ago from a facialist in New York. It allows the serums and whatever products you’re using to really soak in.” She is referring to the fact that microneedling provides a short window of opportunity that allows post-treatment products to travel down the newly created micro-channels in the skin penetrating into the deeper layers at concentrations that are not otherwise possible with topical lotions and potions alone. But believe it or not, that’s not actually the main benefit of microneedling. As we age, the greatest change to our skin is the gradual loss of collagen and elastin. If you haven’t heard of Dermapen®, it’s the world’s most advanced skin-needling technology. It’s a skin treatment that rolls hundreds of tiny needles
across your face creating miniature wounds, which triggers the skin’s own rejuvenation process and is therefore, completely natural. This is precisely why it works amazingly well with all skin types… If you’re using it regularly, you’ll see results even faster! It can help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, stretch marks and acne scars (to name a few), and generally give your skin better tone and texture with continued use. Not only is Dermapen used for a wide range of issues— but it can be done on almost any part of the body too! This phenomenal procedure can be enhanced by infusing a savvy cocktail of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, hyaluronic acid, growth factors and anti-oxidants into the mesoderm (middle layer) of the skin. This works miracles on the skin due to increased penetration of the bespoke formula as a result of Dermapen treatment, giving you that ‘lit-from-within’ glow. After learning all of that, who wouldn’t want it! For those of you wondering… Dermapen is much more effective than at-home dermarollers, as a professional treatment goes deeper into the layers of skin, delivering better results, and is performed by a trained medical professional. There is also a

higher chance of infection with an at-home device, so it’s probably best you sit back and leave it to the experts. So if you’re looking for a quick, painless, and effective way to give your skin that well-deserved TLC, with virtually no downtime, then Dermapen sounds like a great option for you. I’m all
alone
H
ow can anyone be alone with so many people around? Incredibly, it happens all of the time and loneliness can be very damaging to our wellbeing. Our individual sensitivity towards human sociability, friendliness and empathy differs subject to how we experienced such emotional patterns when we were children. Families socialise in lots of distinctive ways. Some people need people more than others, some less. Most of us yield to the ancient motivation ‘to belong’. The belonging drive is very sophisticated in humans, but most of us have a fundamental wish to be liked, valued and loved. When socialising with friends and colleagues, some people are regularly genuinely afraid of being perceived as ‘less than’ or being embarrassed in some way. If a person is so self-conscious in how they communicate, it can cause errors in communication. Often, they display multiple facades and they lock away their true feelings, talk too much or awkwardly, or just say nothing. For some, social settings are sometimes psychologically exhausting and are eventually avoided altogether and result in many of us feeling isolated or lonely.
92 SEPTEMBER 2019
I advise people to be with other people and to try and communicate in a measured, genuine and sensitive ‘true to your self ’ manner. I also advocate people join in and try to empathise. Remember you don’t need to like everyone or to be liked by everyone or have huge numbers of friends. Having two or three close friends that will actually try to understand your thoughts and feelings while putting their own stuff to one side is extremely valuable and deeply comforting. Fundamental in my belief is awareness of yourself and awareness of others, especially those close to you. What truly makes them tick? What makes them appeal to you? With friends, overall acceptance of yourself and who you feel really realistically genuine with, is the key. Once you’ve found friends who you are relaxed with, who you sit really easily next to, value them. Loneliness can be a state of mind, but it is possible to dissolve it from your life. Kitchens & Cars:
Designing with Form & Function in Mind
A
t Hawk Kitchens & Bathrooms, we pride ourselves on designing kitchens and bathrooms around you and your lifestyle and this is one of our most interesting to date. Situated within a Grade II listed Victorian manor house, this contemporary glass box extension was designed to contrast with the existing building and to house an equally contemporary kitchen‌and a sports car. The family enjoyed entertaining and sports cars were a big part of their life so the space had to reflect this. With an obvious love for bold, exciting and innovative design we specified a handleless German kitchen which ran flush with the wall and state of the art Siemens appliances, including a coffee machine and vacuum drawer, which appealed to the clients love for functionalism with design. A colourful sports car from their car collection would be housed within the room at any one time so neutral colours were used throughout to allow the cars to stand out and become the focus of the room. The seamless appearance and linear look of the cabinetry also reflected the contemporary architecture of the space too. The island consisted of three different zones for multi-use functionality; the main L shape for cooking, a raised bar area, complete with champagne tough, for entertaining and a lower seating area for dining, enhanced with sleek curved worktops. The abstract shape of this island along with its mix of finishes and textures on the worktops was designed to reflect the curves and angles within the sports cars. The dark grey worktops also tied in with the window frames, bringing the whole space together. Many sports car makers have teamed up with kitchen designers in the past and it is clear to see there is a link between the sleek shapes, form and functionality in both. idden in plain sight on Cottonmill Lane, situated next door to Blacks of Sopwell, Lamont Chairs, owned by Steve Lamont (57) and Andrew Kovcas (39), is making a name for itself as a purveyor of handmade, made to order sustainable sofas, chairs and ottomans and restorer of antique chairs and sofas. Having recently moved the business to St Albans, Steve and Andrew held a grand opening celebration on 4 August at which one of their youngest clients, one-year old Emily, with the help of her father, Alex, cut the ribbon to rapturous applause from the crowd. Steve and Andrew, both classically trained, have a wealth of experience working for distinguished clients and designers including Jools Holland, Michael Ball, Cathy McGowan, Anna Ford and Davidoff. They have also worked on projects for Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, Ashford Castle Ireland and Elton John’s home. Steve and Andrew are passionate about their craft especially upholstering antique chairs or sofas using traditional methods – a technique which is making a big comeback thanks to the likes of TV’s ‘The Repair Shop’. They can recover or upholster a much loved chair or sofa, giving it a new lease of life using fabric close to the original or a more contemporary upgrade and, if necessary, repair or re-polish the frame. With their ‘made to order’ chairs, the frames are constructed from solid beech with dowelled glued and screwed joints, finished with a choice of sustainable wooden legs. The chairs and sofas are

By breaking away from the standard rectangle, we provided plenty of work space for the chef, a cosy spot for guests to perch at the breakfast bar as well as an alternative to the dining table. We clad the pillar to match the work tops and help bring the scheme together. ountrywide Pianos has been proudly serving both the local and wider community and we have developed from small beginnings to become the ultimate premier showroom in the South- East of England. The piano’s magical sound is created by the player pressing any one of its 88 keys, which creates a note. This happens through a complex hammer-on-string mechanism, which needs to be perfectly regulated and tuned. In the 1900’s a piano which played by itself, by reading a punched out paper roll, was all the rage. Today pianos are sophisticated musical instruments, which may not only play themselves but can be enhanced by full orchestral and vocal parts – in essence providing a live orchestral performance in your own sitting room. Today the punched out paper rolls have been replaced with the very latest digital technology, incorporated within a real acoustic piano, which can be played as a regular piano. Seeing, however is believing and a visit to Countrywide Pianos for a full demonstration is recommended. Our showroom is an array of both new and pre loved pianos with a price range to suit all pockets -from the upright piano to the very largest of full size concert grand piano, self player pianos, ‘Silent’ Yamaha pianos, together with recognition of being a Kawai real and digital Piano Selection centre you really will find it fun making your choice and for those who may need assistance there is always help and advice on hand. Dazzling
Dahlias Dahlias are the divas of late summer but if yours are looking lacklustre, experts offer 10 tips on what you can do about it.
A
s dahlia shows take place throughout late summer, these spectacular plants continue to dazzle, their gorgeous blooms creating a riot of colour. But what if your own specimens are looking tired and forlorn, with damaged leaves and petals or stilted growth? We spoke to the experts to find out how to tackle these problems, with The Cornish Dahlia Society, this year staged its 39th annual show at the Lost Gardens of Heligan, offers the first three of the following tips.
as pale spots in the early stages and then develops into yellow and finally dark brown spots. Older, lower leaves are generally first affected. Tubers will not be affected so can be lifted as normal and cleaned thoroughly but the spores can contaminate soil for years afterwards so plant your dahlias in a new location the following year. You could also try mulching below plants, using straw, to limit further spread through splashback from the soil on to foliage when rain is forecast.
1. Check if your dahlias have a disease
Deformed blooms are likely due to capsid bugs. As they suck the sap of plant tips, usually developing flower buds, toxic saliva enters the plant, causing distorted buds and flowers. Capsid bugs are green, so they are difficult to see - it’s best to look out for early signs of damage, such as holes in leaves and distorted foliage. Simply remove foliage affected. Leaves may develop many small holes, which get bigger as the plant grows and the bugs are most active from May to August. You could try
Fungal diseases (powdery mildew & dahlia smut) are the most difficult of dahlia ailments to remedy. Spider mite is also difficult to deter, but could be treated every 10 days using a horticultural soft soap. It’s recommended to remove the lower leaves affected by mildew to improve air circulation. You could also try a milk/water 30/70 solution, which is commonly used to manage powdery mildew on cucumbers and courgettes. Dahlia smut presents

an organic spray but try to do so at dusk, when pollinating insects are less likely to be affected. Weed control is another way to help prevent the spread of capsid bugs, which may use weeds as host plants over winter. Vaseline on stems could be worth a try. Aphids such as blackfly can cause issues on the tips of plants. Spray off using water or you could use a horticultural soft soap. Alternatively, cut out the infected stem and monitor closely.
3. Do you have holes in petals? This is likely to be due to earwigs. The best solution is to put an upturned pot, filled with straw, on top of a cane secured in the ground. Check the pots regularly and empty earwigs elsewhere. Put the pot at a similar height to the dahlia flowers you want to protect. Planting depth for tubers is 10-15cm (4-6in) and 60cm (2ft) apart. Rotted cuttings grown on in pots can be spaced slightly closer together. Mulch after planting to conserve moisture. Katie Kingett, productive garden supervisor at Heligan, offers these additional tips:
begin. Transplanting bigger plants from containers which were started off indoors may also help reduce slug damage.
4. Prepare your ground in autumn
6. Plant after risk of frost has passed
Ground preparation is key. Add manure early on in the autumn in an area where you are intending on planting your dahlias. Alternatively, add mature matter from your compost heap or blood, fish and bones at planting time. Poor preparation may result in a reduced show of flowers and a less vigorous plant.
If you plant them out too soon, they could get knocked back by frost. Alternatively, pot up tubers in containers in early April indoors ready to transplant later, which would give you an earlier flowering period. Don’t plant them out until at least the end of May.
5. Protect against slugs
8. Water at the base of the plant
Slugs love dahlias, so be vigilant against slugs while the plants are establishing. Put your slug traps out before you plant, so you clear the area before you
This will help alleviate the risk of powdery mildew. Hot, humid and damp weather can lead to powdery mildew destroying foliage. Remove foliage affected to prevent it spreading to the healthy part of the plant. Regular feeding on a weekly basis is a good idea.
“Ground preparation is key. Add manure early on in the autumn in an area where you are intending on planting your dahlias”
9. Deadhead flowers If you want the flowers to last until the end of autumn, you’ll need to deadhead them regularly. As the plant develops, pinch out the dominant bud, which will encourage sideshoots to produce a much bushier plant with more flowers.
10. Lift them after a hard frost Leave the tubers in the ground until the foliage has been hit by frost and the leaves are blackened. Cut the stems to ground level then dig out the tubers carefully. Once the tubers are out, hang them upside down in a dark, dry, frost-free place with the stems pointing downwards because that allows any water collected in the stems to drain away so it won’t rot the tubers. Leave them upside down for two to three weeks before storing them in crates for the winter. Check spasmodically and remove any tubers which look like they are rotting. They can then be started off again in late spring. If you live in a mild area and decide to leave the tubers in the ground, cover them with a thick mulch of straw or added compost.

Think wallpaper’s too daunting or outdated? how to get on board with one of decor’s boldest shifts
Gabrielle Fagan reveals
B
e honest, are you weird about wallpaper? Relax - you’re not alone if you resort to safe, old emulsion, rather than delving into a world of exciting pattern, colour and dazzling designs. You may find the prospect too scary, demanding or the choice bewildering - but truly, it’s time to wake up from your decor slumber and embrace the future. Because, like it or not, wallpaper is the way to go. Walls are being wickedly transformed by

“This is the year to fill your home with bold prints and pattern - and wall coverings are the perfect way to get maximum impact”
designers, who can literally create any pattern or image to suit your taste and fulfil your visual dreams. There’s even a growing trend for papering the fifth wall - the ceiling! Don’t hang around. Let wallpaper transport you to a jungle or country garden; embrace stately home-style panelling, industrial, pared-back ‘brick’ walls or chic chintz patterns (yes, twee flowers are back in fashion), or even plunder the work of the great artists at the National Gallery. One design house, Andrew Martin (andrewmartin.co.uk), is reproducing famous paintings from the famous gallery, so they can grace the walls in your home. “This is the year to fill your home with bold prints and pattern - and wall coverings are the perfect way to get maximum impact,” enthuses Nina Tarnowski, founder and designer of Lancashirebased specialist wallpaper company, Woodchip & Magnolia (woodchipandmagnolia.co.uk). “There’s no need to be intimidated because there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to what looks good. Individuality is key to adding your own personality to the home. If you follow your instinct and go with what you love, your home will never look better.” Papering the ceiling proves being adventurous and abandoning convention can pay dividends, she points out. “Putting wallpaper on the ‘fifth wall’ can make a room appear larger and brighter, but it also adds a surprising focal point,” she says. “Test it out in a spare bedroom or small room to see just what an impact it can have on your decor. You’ll be amazed - honestly, these days, the sky’s the limit for experimenting and playing with wallpapers and murals.”
Follow these easy steps to waking up your walls...
Don’t just follow the trends or the pack “Your home is an extension of your personality and should reflect that. No two people are the same, so why should their homes be?” declares Tarnowski. “Find wallpaper that speaks to you and make sure it’s something that you fall in love with. Don’t settle for decor that ticks the box on a trend but does nothing for your soul.”
H OME & PROPERTY
What’s hot? Patterns and images which are eye-catching and make a statement are becoming hugely popular, says Tarnowski. “As a designer, working digitally lets me explore colour and scale in ways never before possible. I used to design traditional analogue wallpapers working within a set repeat. I now feel free, “ she says. “The digital age has enabled wallpapers to be designed in new and creative ways, and the results are spectacular. It’s a really exciting time to be in the industry, with new designs coming out everyday.”
Bag a high-street bargain High-street lifestyle and fashion brand, Accessorize, has launched its first range of wallpaper, with 13 designs including florals, wild prints, metallics and texture, all at £30 a roll. My favourite for adding texture is the Camden White brick. Check it out at WallpaperDirect.com.
Step into the jungle One way to escape our unpredictable weather is to change your indoor landscape. Put away the passport and simply replicate a hot, steamy jungle (wildlife optional) and key into one of the strongest trends in decor. The jungle trend has been around for a while now so we’re seeing a lot more people being more adventurous and playful with it to keep it alive and fresh,” says Rachel Kenny, head of the studio team, Wallsauce.com. “Exotic wallpaper designs, which bring in pattern and colour, are giving rooms that punch with show-stopping feature walls.” Another mural in its range features a more delicate colour palette and design but has a similar faraway feel: The Birds Voyage of Discovery Wallpaper Mural, from £32 per square metre, Wallsauce.
Trick the eye “Wallpaper just keeps rolling, and whatever your taste, there is something for everyone,” promises David Harris, design director at innovative and cult interiors destination, Andrew Martin. “From traditional florals and trompe l’oeil, to contemporary geometric and tropical patterns, or animal motifs and architectural designs, it’s a world of endless possibilities.” Wondering how to best style your wallpaper? “Ideally, pair a large-scale patterned wallpaper with a plain rug, and add in cushions with smaller-scale patterns,” Harris advises. “Instead of using matching colours, opt for shades that complement one another, to create a sense of cohesiveness.” For those who are more wallpaper-wise and using two different contrasting patterns, he recommends limiting the palette to two or three shades to avoid overwhelming a room. “Balance large-scale patterns with smaller-scale prints, and keep some areas devoid of pattern altogether,” he summarises. If you’re still nervous about wading into wallpaper, Harris suggests turning your attention to the - often neglected 112 SEPTEMBER 2019
smallest room in the home. “If there is one room in the house where you can afford to have lots of decorating fun, it’s probably the downstairs loo,” he says. “Why not make this a fun and interesting place of contemplation? Anything goes wallpaper wise; bright colours, geometrics, florals, stripes, books, animals and maps. “Finish by adorning the poshly-papered walls with your favourite pictures, photography, mirrors and collectables to add extra depth, texture and light.”
Make a splash “Wallpaper’s a quick and affordable update for a bathroom - far cheaper than tiles and easier to change,” points out Alex Whitecroft, head of design at I Want Wallpaper (iwantwallpaper.co.uk). “The damp and steamy atmosphere needn’t be a problem if you use the right paper, and that doesn’t need to limit your choice. From glamorous metallics to faux tiles and tropical jungles, there are some stunning papers around. “When applied correctly, modern wallpapers can stay strong for years,” Whitecroft adds. “A top tip is to apply a coat of Decorator’s Varnish over the top to seal and make the surface moisture-resistant.” Feature walls, she suggests, work brilliantly in this room, and fashionable mosaic, slate and marble tile effects can be recreated at a fraction of the cost. They can also be a way to enlarge the space, she says, as a patterned paper can help create the illusion of more room in a compact bathroom; murals or large-scale patterns can work well. Finally, Whitecroft concludes, source the appropriate type of papers, which should have a hard-wearing vinyl finish. For instance, some are marked ‘scrubbable’ or ‘highly scrubbable’.

HARVESTING HERBS: HOW TO MAKE your HOMEGROWN HERBS LAST into autumn Don’t let the late summer rain wash away all your homegrown herbs. We offer top tips on how to keep them going, long after summer has faded.
W
ant to save your freshly grown herbs? They may have run to seed or look the worse for wear in the heavy summer rain, but it’s easy if you know how. Some herbs will soon be coming to the end of their natural harvesting period, so here are some top tips on how to pick them to enjoy for months to come.
1. Mint Hopefully you’ll have grown your mint in a pot so it hasn’t invaded other plants in your herb garden or border. The best way to harvest it is to start snipping as soon as the leaves are large enough. However, this may have been at the beginning of summer. But if you want fresh mint into the winter months, take some cuttings now. Pick three leafy, non-flowered sprigs that are about 10cm long, sit them in a glass of water in a light position inside, ideally on a windowsill, and they should take root fairly quickly. Then pot the cuttings into a container about the same size you’d buy in a supermarket pot of herbs, with multi-purpose compost, and the mint should continue to grow. Cut it regularly and it should bush out.
2. Parsley This common herb is usually grown as an annual, either at the front of vegetable beds or in pots, but it doesn’t dry well, so if you want to save your harvest, freeze bunches in a plastic bag, then you can rub the leaves off the stalks when you remove them, as needed.
3. Sage This Christmas favourite - an essential addition to stuffing - also looks fantastic as an ornamental because of the striking texture and tone of its leaves. However, sage is a Mediterranean plant, so won’t appreciate a really wet winter. To be on the safe side, dry your sage leaves now by blanching them - dipping them into boiling water followed by cold - then lay them out on baking trays in a warm area to dry, turning them over from time to 116 SEPTEMBER 2019
time. Once they are totally dry, keep them in airtight screw-top jars.
4. Coriander Have you noticed that your coriander plants have run to seed, sending up wisps of cow parsley-like flowers? Don’t cut them off, because at this time of year, round, greenish seeds will be developing which can be used in your cooking. At the end of summer, cut the flower stalks complete with seedheads, and hang them upside down in a warm, dry place, but out of direct sunlight. Tie paper bags over the heads to catch the seeds which fall, and after a few days, shake the bag to encourage the seeds to drop. You can then dry them on a tray before storing them in an airtight screw-top glass jar. When you want to use them, grind them in a spice mill or in a pestle and mortar for maximum flavour.
5. Chives They may have long finished flowering, but if you want the oniony flavour of chives later on in the season, you’re best off digging up a small clump from your garden to repot and take indoors. Cut the foliage down to 2.5-5cm (1-2in) above the top of the roots, then repot in multi-purpose compost for windowsill plants, which should soon start growing and will be ready after outdoor plants have died down for the winter.
“At the end of summer, cut the flower stalks complete with seedheads, and hang them upside down in a warm, dry place, but out of direct sunlight”

uyers looking for luxury homes that gives them access to Green Belt countryside and the exclusive golf and country club lifestyle, are finding exactly what they want with Griggs Homes. This family firm is based in Radlett, and certainly knows its local market. It also appears to be defying all the current uncertainty in the housing market by offering homes that customers can buy with complete confidence. For example, all six houses in its Rest Harrow development sold out almost immediately off-plan, a sure sign of trust between buyer and developer. The homes at Rest Harrow are individually designed, between 2,000 to 3,700 sq ft in size and set in a choice location, the Conservation Area of Shenley village. Close by Griggs Homes will soon be launching another new development, Meadow View, an exclusive collection of just 3 family homes in Well End, just outside Borehamwood. All of these

The company is known for creating luxurious, desirable homes of lasting quality, and for the way it works alongside local communities with honesty and integrity.
