s catwalks are being dismantled and the giant blow-up Burberry bear that’s been seated at Marble Arch is deflated, the world’s most in-demand models, make-up artists, editors and buyers are hotfooting it to Milan for the next round of shows, which means London Fashion Week is officially done and dusted for another season. And what a season it’s been.

The first vehicle to bear the Porsche name was registered on June 8, 1948: It was the 356 “No.1” Roadster. This is the day on which the Porsche brand was born. And purchased by a woman called Jolanda Tschudi, of Switzerland.

The prestigious Tring Park School for the Performing Arts is hosting two dedicated day-long workshop for boys with a passion for performing arts and dance in November and December.

From there to the coast the full field will pass through Purley, Coulsdon and Hooley on its merry way to Redhill with a well-earned mid-way refreshment stop in Crawley before travelling through the picturesque villages of Sussex followed by the final descent into Brighton.

or the first time in its 122 year history, this year the Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox will adopt two routes out of the capital at first light on Sunday 4 November.

The journey from Hyde Park to the Sussex coast has been subject to various minor changes since the posse of early automotive pioneers celebrated the passing into law of the Locomotive on the Highway Act. Though since setting out on the very first Emancipation Run way back in November 1896, all participants have always followed the same officially designated road as one another down to Brighton.

However, due to increasing Sunday morning congestion on the streets of London and everspiralling spectator traffic, this year Run participants have two routes between Westminster and Croydon to help alleviate overcrowding on the increasingly busy highways meaning even more enthusiasts in south London have a wonderful opportunity to savour hundreds of extraordinary pre-1905 cars travelling past en-route to Brighton.

All cars will depart Hyde Park at sunrise and travel through the Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner, then down Constitution Hill, past Buckingham Palace, along The Mall, under Admiralty Arch, and down Whitehall to Parliament Square. Here the Run will split into two. Half of the spectacular veteran car field will follow the familiar path taken in recent years past Big Ben over Westminster Bridge and then onto Streatham and Thornton Heath.

Pink and red colours are produced when these diamonds have a mutation within their crystal lattice that alters the stones molecular structure. The purer colours of pink, blue and red are extremely rare and valuable and in their natural form an extremely finite source.

The shape and character of your diamond is determined by the cut. By far the most popular is the round brilliant cut followed by the square modified brilliant or princess cut, then the cushion cut which can be square or oblong in shape with softly curved sides and corners. After those the oval cut, the emerald cut, the radiant cut also square or oblong, the marquise cut, pear shape and Asscher cut are all fairly similar in popularity.

Emerald and baguette cuts are very different to most other diamonds in so much as they have fewer facets and they are step cut with cut corners for the emerald cut and full corners for the baguette.

Whilst they do not sparkle as much as Brilliant or other similar cuts they have a very different and sophisticated look which is really attractive. They are also like mirrors and easily show any imperfections within. We would always recommend choosing a very clean stone when selecting these cuts. When choosing a fancy cut it is imperative to look at a really good selection of similar stones as they are even less predictable than round brilliant cuts.

The certification does not tell about the variations of any particular shape For instance, an oval or marquise cut can be slightly long and skinny or short and fat, both of which can look very unattractive. Similarly a cushion cut which is only slightly heavily cut can look very small and the accompanying certificate could still rate the symmetry as ‘good’.

n October 2, 1950, the four-panel comic strip by 27-year-old Charles M. Schulz made its debut. Known as Peanuts, it eventually became one of the world’s most widely read comic strip turning its characters—Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, Peppermint Patty and Schroeder—into pop culture icons.

How did Peanuts come to be called Peanuts?

“I don’t like the name of my strip at all. I wanted to call it Good Old Charlie Brown, but the person at the syndicate who selected Peanuts just picked it at random from a list of possible titles he jotted down.

He hadn’t even looked at the strip when he named it. The syndicate compromised on Sunday, though.

Once I rebelled and sent it in without any title. We finally agreed to put Peanuts at the top and include Charlie Brown and His Gang in the sub-title on Sunday – Charles M. Schulz, 1969 Following the 1967 Apollo 1 fire disaster, NASA officials contacted Charles Schulz to use Snoopy as their safety mascot. Schulz helped design a pin for the Silver Snoopy award, which was presented to aerospace workers for outstanding contributions toward safer spaceflight operations. Later, during the Apollo 10 mission (which served as the dress rehearsal for the historic Apollo 11 moon landing), NASA dubbed the lunar module “Snoopy” and the command module “Charlie Brown.”

Snoopy, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame right next to the star of the creator of Peanuts comic strips, Charles M. Schulz. Snoopy happens to be the first fictional Beagle to be honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The character was honoured with the star just 4 days before the movie’s premiere worldwide in November 2015.

The famous comic had an audience of 355 Million people!

ranee, the story goes that yourself and your husband created your first Thai Tapas menu in the basement of a cottage in Brighton back in 2002. With that building then becoming your Brighton restaurant, Giggling Squid has certainly come a long way.

Tell us what inspired you to start off in the restaurant business.

It’s funny because the things that inspired me to open a restaurant was not just the food itself but creating a Thai experience, with subtle décor less intense that what we’ve seen with other Thai restaurant offerings, and to make the surroundings stand out as much as the food Where does your inspiration come from for the dishes that you serve?

My mum and the travels we made in Thailand.

Some are from coastal towns and others are inspired by the night markets What is your favourite dish on the menu?

I have so many favourite dishes dependent on how hungry I am. When I am very hungry I would go for beef rib and coconut sauce. If I’m looking for something light then it would have to be the be Pamelo and Jicama salad.

The décor in the Harpenden restaurant is stunning. Tell us more about the atmosphere that you wanted to create.

I was so delighted when we secured the building in Harpenden, there was so much versatility that I was inspired to create a space that was inviting and vibrant. Floral wallpaper, a feature wall mural and hand painted furniture are combined with the artistic and craft feel of dried pressed flowers and shell light fixtures, which add a fun element to the décor. We are lucky to have a courtyard, so this space was turned into a warm inviting space with heaters, garden benches with cosy cushions for before or after dining drinks For someone who has never tried Thai before, how would you describe the menu?

The menu is designed to suit the whole family.

We’ve got the classic Thai dishes of course but with the seasons we like to update the menu and be adventurous too using unusual Thai ingredients and creating dishes we hope our customers will love Where did the name come from?

It’s the nickname of one of our three children!

We look for buildings with character that we can embrace and simply put our Giggling finishing touches too. In terms of towns or cities, we look for places where can make a difference, somewhere that has something about it, think of a town that is surrounded by nice places to take a dog for a walk, a lovely wood where kids can ride bicycles or a market that sells fresh local produce If you eat out, where do you like to go?

I have lots of different cuisines, from the Vietnamese noodles to some the beautiful fish restaurants in Cornwall Where do you get your ingredients from?

n Thursday 27 September, Watford celebrated the opening of Debenhams, starting the first phase of the development openings at intu Watford.

The shopping centre put on a weekend-long celebration party throughout the mall, including a beauty, fashion and food zone, free for shoppers to enjoy, plus entertainment that saw a flashmob appearance from the sensational Rock Choir.

Celebrity fashion designer Julien Macdonald OBE, and local resident and competition winner Megan Bowyer, stepped into the spotlight to officially open the new Debenhams Watford store.

Music at Merchant Taylors’ School Director of Music Simon Couldridge writes of how music is integral to all facets of life at Merchant Taylors’.

W

e are keen to ensure as many of our pupils as possible participate in school music. At one end of the scale boys joining the school at 11 are all given the opportunity to receive individual trial lessons on an orchestral instrument with some of our 23 visiting music teachers, whilst at the other, some of the more advanced musicians attend the junior departments of the Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music and go on to win Choral and Organ Scholarships at Oxbridge colleges.

With nearly 300 instrumental or singing lessons taught each week, and close to half the school participating in performing music throughout the academic year, there is a lot to reflect upon.

An informal concert series provides the ideal platform for solo and small group performances.

A recent informal concert programme featured a sublime performance of Bach’s Toccata in D major, followed by the Merchants of Groove playing Alligator Boogaloo. This typically eclectic juxtaposition is part of what makes music at Merchant Taylors’ so vibrant and exciting.

There are 22 ensembles and bands, from the Junior Percussion Ensemble to the Symphony Orchestra, the Guitar Ensemble to the Concert Band, and the Sinfonia String Orchestra to Taylors’ Brass. There are also three jazz bands which play modern jazz and rehearse weekly to prepare for regular performances.

Singing is hugely important at Merchant Taylors’.

Whether it is the 140-strong Choir leading the singing at St Paul’s Cathedral for the Triennial Service, the Chamber Choir performing at the Carol Service or the a cappella Vocal Group shining in concerts at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall in the City, our choristers play a full part in major school events.

Parents also have the opportunity to sing with the School Choir annually as part of the Choral Society,

which has recently performed works including Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, and Rutter’s Gloria.

Music Scholars enjoy regular visits to concerts and recitals in London, and internationally renowned musicians visit the school to work with the boys and give recitals. Recent visitors include Bob Chilcott (OMT) and Clive Carroll. The Chamber Choir and Chamber Orchestra embark upon biennial music tours that give the boys opportunities to perform around the world, most recently to Belgium, Austria, the USA, Spain and the Czech Republic.

Musical composition is also gaining greater prevalence with the recent expansion of music technology facilities. n the 2014 annual budget the chancellor introduced dramatic new rules concerning access to pension funds. These new pension freedoms allow far greater flexibility to individuals in retirement but for some the options only complicate things.

he prestigious Tring Park School for the Performing Arts is hosting two dedicated day-long workshop for boys with a passion for performing arts and dance in November and December.

The first workshop, for students aged 11-16, will take place on 9 November from 10am to 4pm and will give boys the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a performing arts student.

Boys keen to attend this workshop will have the chance to enjoy lessons in acting, musical theatre and commercial music alongside current boys from Tring Park School The second Life in a Day workshop is being held on 7 December and will focus solely on dance and will cater for boys aged 10-16. During the day, students will take part in a dance technique class, get some tips on how to get the most out of auditions as well as observe a masterclass by world-class teachers.

At both workshops, teachers will be on hand to shed some light on what life is like for a boy with a passion for performing arts and dance studying at Tring Park School.

As well as having the taster sessions, boys attending the workshops will get the chance to hear about how the day is structured and the balance between academic and performing arts classes.

Academic studies are just as important as dance, acting, musical theatre and commercial music education with Tring Park School, says Principal Stefan Anderson. “The school’s teaching staff and students pride themselves equally on academic success and performing arts achievements and this is reflected in the school’s glittering alumni, who have left Tring Park School fully prepared for whatever career path they choose to follow.”

When it comes to its alumni, Tring Park School has some seriously strong credentials. Director and choreographer Drew Mconie is a Tring Park graduate, and at the tender age of 33, he already has an impressive CV. Drew won the 2016 Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreographer for his work on In the Heights and was nominated for the 2017 Olivier

Award for Best Theatre Choreographer for Jesus Christ Superstar.

He has also directed and choreographed Strictly Ballroom in the West End this year and is set to make his name on Broadway as the director of King Kong the Musical, which previews in October. Like fellow Tring Park graduates, Daisy Ridley and Lily James, Drew has made a name for himself all over the world.

Currently, there are a number of ex-Tring Park students performing in Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, including Will Bozier and Max Westwell, while former Tring Park School boy Ned Porteous has had a lot to shout about this year after he made the shortlist for Most Popular Newcomer in the National Television Awards for his role as Joseph Tate in Emmerdale.

Ex-student Zach Wyatt has landed his first professional role alongside Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams in the UK premiere of Lauren Gunderson’s I and You, at the Hampstead Theatre later this autumn.

In the world of musical theatre, Kit Esuruoso has been starring as Craig Turner in the original cast of West End hit show Tina the Musical. Kit will also be starring in a new film called Akoni. And of course, there’s not forgetting, the incredible Kaine Ward, who is one of six boys from Tring Park School who have played the lead role of Billy Elliot in the smash-hit West End musical and UK tour.

Kaine attended Tring Park from the age of 10 and graduated from the school last year to follow his dancer’s dream to New York City where he was one of just 24 dancers selected worldwide to attend the world-famous Juilliard School of Performing Arts, whose alumni include Robin Williams, Christopher Reeve and Val Kilmer.

So, Tring Park School’s credentials speak volumes when it comes to teaching boys with a passion for performing arts, and the Life in the Day for boys workshop is the perfect experience to give boys an insight into life as a performing arts student.

Reflecting back on the past year and looking ahead to the future, at Edge Grove we certainly have plenty of which to be proud.

H

ighlights from the past year include the opening of our new state-of-the-art Edge Grove Pre-School, following an increasing demand for places. The purpose-built Pre-School enjoyed a successful first year and provides a safe and stimulating ageappropriate environment for 40 children aged 3-4 years.

Following the acquisition of some local land we were delighted to launch Edge Grove Park. This has extended our estate by a further twenty acres (increasing our site to 48 acres) and has given our pupils much more space for recreation and learning.

We enjoyed a record year in terms of scholarships and exhibitions to senior schools, including Harrow, Rugby, Merchant Taylors’, Habs Girls and St Albans High School for Girls.

Almost 30 scholarships were awarded across many disciplines such all-rounder scholarships, major academic, sports, drama, arts, music and a number of specialised scholarship awards.

Our new Creative Arts Faculty has bought together the separate areas of art, music, drama and dance and established and strengthened links with external bodies, providing a unified experience for

Edge Grove pupils. We are thrilled to be working in partnership with the Jones Dance Academy who are providing a Saturday morning dance school at Edge Grove and an after school activity session. We have also formed a partnership with Future Stars Theatre Arts who will be using our newly refurbished theatre facility for their Sunday drama school at Edge Grove.

Looking ahead, our vision for the future is one in which we will continue to be proudly different and to forge an innovative and distinctive path, increasingly admired and emulated by others.

After many years of planning we are delighted that construction work has started on a £3 million contemporary designed and sustainable Lower School building, providing an exciting learning environment for our pupils.

he first vehicle to bear the Porsche name was registered on June 8, 1948: It was the 356 “No.1” Roadster. This is the day on which the Porsche brand was born. And purchased by a woman called Jolanda Tschudi, of Switzerland .

The Type 356 turned Ferry Porsche’s dream of a sports car into a reality. “His vision at that time embodied all of the values that still define the brand to this day”, said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “Tradition is a commitment. Meet Jo Merchant, the local mum behind When I Grow Up, a new project to open an innovative family hub in Barnet - she needs your help!

So, what exactly is a family hub?

A home-from-home for families to come together, a state-of-the-art play space for little ones made of natural materials, a healthy café and workspace for creative classes and events that support the local community.

Why did you start When I Grow Up? Having moved back to High Barnet in May 2017 (this time with two children in tow), I started to appreciate the desperate need for a strong coffee, something delicious and nutritious to eat and spend a couple of hours out of the house with the children. I wanted to meet new friends where my energetic toddler was going to be inspired and stimulated (in the right way). I had a new baby so it needed to be clean and supportive, with enough space for buggies and excellent changing facilities.

It’s become my goal to provide this for Barnet.

Of what are you most proud?

When I Grow Up is already bringing the community together! We have local parents volunteering and spreading the word and it’s been a great way to meet

other families who also want the best for Barnet and their kids.

Grownups seem to really appreciate us designing a space with them in mind as much as the little ones! The “When I Grow Up” name applies to grownups and children alike!

How do we make this happen?

We need to show local support to be eligible to receive funding from the Mayor of London, and to fundraise for our setup costs. We are aiming to open on Barnet High Street in April 2019.

The old adage ‘learn something new every day’ could have been written for the world of valuers and auctioneers.

‘W

e never know what each day will bring’ - commented Frances Noble, Associate Director and Head of Jewellery Department at Dix Noonan Webb, specialist Mayfair auctioneers. ‘I love the pieces that require further research and the opportunity to learn something new. A few weeks ago, a beautiful French floral diamond spray brooch, circa 1880s, was brought in for sale, contained in it’s original maroon leather and gilt tooled fitted case, the brooch still with the original range of fittings that would enabled the piece to be worn in numerous ways. The leather case even contained the designer’s original hand drawn pen and ink sketches”.

“The diamond brooch is mounted ‘en tremblant’,” continued Frances, “a technique where each flowerhead is held on a spiral spring, making them ‘tremble’ when worn, as if to simulate flowers ‘dancing in the breeze’. The brooch was made by a little known Parisian jewel house, Debacq & Cie. Not a name that is familiar to many, indeed I can’t remember ever handling a piece by this particular maker. So it was a delight to learn more about this

jewel house”.

Debacq Jewellers first opened its doors for business in Paris in 1812, manufacturing and trading in gold jewellery. By its heyday, the 1860s-80s, the company, based at 40, Rue Réaumur, was employing twelve diamond polishers alongside the jewellery workshops and sales offices, and specialised in exquisite diamond floral brooches and large corsage sprays, made as convertible jewels that could be changed to suit the occasion, and worn as brooches, hair decorations, bangles, pendants etc.

This beautiful brooch was included in the 4th September Jewellery auction in Dix Noonan Webb’s Mayfair auction rooms and sold for £5000.

Dix Noonan Webb hold monthly events in Berkhamsted and will be returning to Berkhamsted Town Hall for their next Jewellery Valuation Day, on Thursday 11th October between 10am-2pm, where specialists will be available to offer free and confidential valuations, with a view to possible sale in their Mayfair auction rooms (consigning now for the Christmas auctions).

From Humble Bakers to Hertfordshire Hoteliers

Few family businesses operating today can trace their history back to the eighteenth century, but that is certainly not true of luxury hotel brand, Beales Hotels, whose legacy stretches all the way back to 1769. The Hertfordshire-based company may be best known for its four-star luxury hotels, but the business originally came from much humbler beginnings.

I

n 1769, master baker, John Beale moved to London and opened a shop on Oxford Street. He was soon joined by the second Beale, also called John, who opened a shop around the corner with his nephew Edward, who later went on to teach the baking trade to his nephew, William, at his own bakery in Islington.

Following his apprenticeship, William opened a shop in Highgate Hill and expanded the business to provide a dinner delivery service - the Beales’ first foray into catering. The business was so successful that in 1889 William was able to open a five storey restaurant and grocery provisions store in Holloway.

Although the grocery side of the business was eventually closed down, the bakery and restaurant continued to go from strength to strength, paving the way for the next chapter in this family’s fortunes.

The Beale family first entered the hotel industry in 1945 when Edward Beale purchased West Lodge Park Hotel in Hadley Wood, Hertfordshire.

Originally a quiet, unlicensed hotel housing mainly permanent residents, it underwent a significant change in 1958, with updated rooms, a new bar and upgraded restaurant. In 1964, Edward’s son Trevor acquired Hatfield Lodge, adding a second hotel to the Beale portfolio.

Between 1964 and 1997, both hotels underwent a significant programme of renovations, and in 2004,

Andrew Beale, son of Trevor, supervised the rebuilding of Hatfield Lodge, transforming it into a first-class, four star venue called Beales Hotel, Hatfield. In contrast to the traditional country house style of West Park Lodge, Beales Hotel was built in a striking, contemporary style, blending steel fittings, cedar wood and large expanses of glass.

Today, both hotels have more than fifty guest rooms, as well as impressive conference facilities and unique features such as a large outdoor arboretum which was planted by Edward Beale himself. Although the two venues may differ from each other in style they share a commitment to excellence that has been evident throughout the family’s history.

Over more than 200 years, the Beale family business has developed from a single bakery into a group of fine hotels. The current success of the Beale Group is down to the hard work of eight generations of Beales, each of whom have put their own particular stamp on the business, adapting to a range of challenges and opportunities, including booms, slumps and even world wars! Alexa Chung Style icon turned designer Chung has long been a regular on the fashion week front row, but this season she was behind the scenes, holding the first ever show for her eponymous clothing brand. The 34-year-old was on a flight of fancy for spring, calling the collection ‘Arrivals and Departures’, which meant a holiday wardrobe of floaty midi dresses, safari style tailoring and travel-friendly jumpsuits, all in a muted 1970s colour palette.

While other designers try to - and need to - grab headlines with zany clothing and make-up, Chung kept it simple and played to her major strength: Knowing exactly what women want to wear.

Victoria Beckham Celebrating 10 years of her own eponymous brand, Victoria Beckham showed in London for the first time after a decade on the New York schedule, but insisted the collection wasn’t a retrospective. Of course, there were the signatures Beckham has become known for - breezy silk midi dresses, sharp tailored jackets and bodycon knitwear for instance - while there was also a freshness in the use of colour and the sexiness of it all. some time, and flashes of scarlet packed a punch. It was the skinny ankle-split trousers, however, which Beckham herself wore, that we think will be the big hit of SS19.

Burberry “This show is a celebration of the cultures, the traditions and the codes of this historic fashion house and of the eclecticism that makes up the beautifully diverse United Kingdom,” said Riccardo Tisci, Burberry’s newly appointed chief creative officer. In typically rebellious Tisci style, the show began with a slew of ladylike pencil and pleated skirts, pussy-bow blouses and paired-back trench coats, the bait and switch coming in the second half... Judging by the reaction on social media, Burberry purists weren’t best pleased with the latter but the elegant opening impressed many.

Julien Macdonald If it’s not broke, don’t fix it, they say, and that seems to be the mantra of Julien Macdonald, who returned to the London schedule after a season’s sabbatical.

Consequently we were treated to the usual all-out glam fest, a parade of glittering, sharp-shouldered gowns and extremely skimpy minidresses. Alongside the usual black and silver, there were pops of bright yellow, tangerine and fuchsia - expect to see these colourful creations on the red carpet once spring rolls around.

Plenty of them. All of the elements that make Erdem a favourite of red carpet walkers everywhere (not least the Duchess of Cambridge) were present on Monday, the stunning collection bolstered by a fascinating backstory. Erdem Moralioglu said he was inspired by Fanny and Stella, a pair of nineteenth century crossdressers who were, given fashion’s current obsession with all things genderless, well ahead of their time.

Combining mannish tailoring with voluminous dresses in raspberry and duck egg blue, this opulent Victoriana look was a resounding victory for Erdem.

Preen Alexa Chung wasn’t the only one thinking about travel for spring. At Preen, there was a nomadic theme and the show traversed eras too as vintage ruffles were clashed with cagoules and hiking boots.

BEAUTY FROM THE CATWALK takes a look at what’s proved popular on the catwalk.

ven though it’s called London Fashion Week, it might as well be called London Fashion And Beauty Week as far as we’re concerned.

We’ll let that slide - it’s admittedly not that catchy an alternative name. It has to be said, though, the hair and make-up looks on the catwalk were just as carefully considered as the clothes.

Beauty can make or break a fashion show, and as such, designers have been hugely experimental with their looks this season. If you’re keen on updating your hair and make-up game, here are the key beauty trends that have come out of London Fashion Week...

It’s all about glowing skin Korean beauty trends have well and truly hit the UK, as most shows made clear, glowing, dewy skin the focus. The likes of Ashish and Preen by Thornton Bregazzi might have opposite styles when it comes to clothing, but they were both loving bright skin for their models. It meant backstage make-up artists had a slightly different job than normal. Few were seen wielding foundation or concealer, instead opting for illuminating balms and all manner of moisturisers. It was more about skin prep. Models in Victoria Beckham’s show were treated to a Foreo two-minute light therapy facial before their minimal make-up was applied, and similarly at Alexa Chung, models received a Japanese facial massage prior to the show. This might be a “no make-up make-up” look, but it still requires a fair amount of work.

Pastel hair, but with a punk-rock edge We suspect this particular trend might have been inspired by New York Fashion Week, as last Thursday Marc Jacobs debuted his collection with models sporting hair in cotton candy hues. London designers were also interested in pale pink locks, but with a distinctly more punk rock feel - take the Ashley Williams show, where hair was gelled upwards as though inspired by troll dolls. Matty Bovan’s models also rocked coloured hair. He experimented with pastels as well as brighter pinks and shocks of lilac.

You can’t go wrong with a bit of glitter This London Fashion Week might be looking forward to spring/summer next year, but there’s no harm in getting some beauty inspiration just 7 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

in time for party season. Halpern is known for its glitter-tastic outfits, so it’s no surprise the make-up was designed to match, with eyelids covered in bold sparkly colours. The ultimate disco glam look popped even more against the models’ glowing skin. Simone Rocha provided a more subtle alternative with light dustings of silver over the lids, up to the brows.

Rough and ready splashes of colour Once dewy and glowing skin has been achieved, it’s all about rough and ready splashes of neon colour.

The point of this trend isn’t to look put together instead you want to look like you’ve just rolled out of bed and splashed some colour on your face. For Ashish it was dabs of neon around the eye, and for the likes of Fyodor Golan and Marta Jakubowski, it was slicks of lipstick in fun shades of pink, orange and purple. We caught up with make-up artist Isamaya Ffrench backstage before the Ashish show, and she described the haphazard eyeshadow as “an undone look, like the model’s done it themselves.”

Wet-look hair was everywhere Ugly fashion is very much in vogue at the moment, and this seems to have expanded into the world of beauty as well. Wet look hair isn’t traditionally considered ‘pretty’, but it still stormed the catwalk.

Long gone are big blow dries and glossy manes, and instead stylists opted for lank, almost stringy hair.

Locks were either slicked back - like at House of Holland or Chalayan (the latter of which included two choice strands down the front of the face, which felt very 2007), or gelled down in uneven clumps over the face - as at Ashish. Designers from Markus Lupfer to Preen and even Victoria Beckham were all fans.

enuinely compliant, tested and approved energy rated replacement 2 for 1 double glazing just can’t be done unless the installer is losing money or inflating the cost of the other window or door or even possibly not fitting the quality of products required to meet

We’ve all seen buy one, get one free deals in supermarkets, and even heard about them being offered on double glazing, but in our heart of hearts we know that they are not really as good a deal as they seem, nothing is for free. In the case of 2 for 1 offers, more often than not the supermarkets are buying in the promoted items at a reduced cost from their suppliers for a limited period in order to help boost their own sales by increasing foot traffic through their stores.

Consequently, unless a replacement double glazed window is being sold at a massively inflated price, a deal has been done with suppliers, or the window is actually being given away free (unlikely!), fair priced window installers simply don’t have the margin to give a whole window away free.

Firstly, to be able to actually give away a bespoke made product they would need to get a professional surveyor to do a free survey. Secondly, they’d have to buy in custom made double glazed sealed units for nothing, along with all the other raw materials needed to make replacement windows like gaskets, friction hinges, locking systems and window

handles. Thirdly, they would need to manufacture or buy in compliant UPVC, aluminium or wood framed glazing systems as well as pay the fabricators.

After all that they would need to get fitters (who are likely to be sub-contractors) to agree to deliver and install the window for free using their own van, fuel, silicone, builders caulk and plaster etc. - I’m sure you’d agree it extremely unlikely commercial businesses and fitters would do this.

The bottom line is that unless a double glazing supplier is happy to lose money, then buy one, get one free deals are obviously fantasy, and the only way of funding them is to hide the cost of the second window in the first window or other products they are pricing for. Another thing worth checking out if you do decide to take up a 2 for 1 deal is to check out that the “free” window comes with a guarantee. The way round this is to insist that you pay half-price for both windows, which legally obligates the installer to provide whatever warranty they say they will give on both windows.

This does not “guarantee” the warranty is worth the paper it is written on, but certainly will help in any argument with the double glazing company or Trading Standards over any issues that arise with the product over time.

All FENSA Registered installers are obligated to provide every replacement window or door customer with an insurance backed warranty as part of the package, so yet another item that has a fixed

premium and obviously is not “free”.

Consequently, for any double glazing company to be sustainable throughout the 10 year period of a standard industry warranty, they need to make a profit to pay all their suppliers and staff, plus have enough left over to be able to offer a genuine guarantee, so quite simply 2 for 1 bespoke windows just can’t be done!

utumn is the time of year when nature changes it’s colours, and thanks to the new home collections, it’s easy to ring the changes indoors too.

Choose from sumptuous florals, a cool Nordic theme that celebrates easy, stylish comfort, or full-fat maximalism, with its emphasis on luxury and individuality. Be inspired - whether it’s a total revamp or just a refresh with a few new accessories - so that your rooms are fashionably kitted out for the seasons to come...

Make magic with moody blooms “Escape the everyday and saturate your home with glorious jewel tones this autumn. There are so many ways to use them - in Oriental, deco, and bold floral prints - I love that it all feels a bit fantasy,” enthuses Lois Vincent, home designer at House of Fraser.

Decorate to the max “We expect maximalism to be one of the breakthrough looks for autumn and winter, and we’re already seeing people investing in bold, bright pieces for their homes,” says Fionnuala Johnston, senior designer at John Lewis. “Maximalism is not necessarily about overcrowding a space, but choosing to be bold by showcasing your own unique style in a creative way. Carefully considered mixing and matching of colours, prints and textures is key to achieving the look, and it’s the perfect opportunity to layer designs and blend references. “A good example would be combining a contemporary drinks trolley with tropical, vintage wallpaper, for a refined glamour that celebrates old and new style.” Designer Abigail Ahern has embraced the luxe look and made it her own, with her richly designed animal-inspired Edition homeware for Debenhams.

SCANDI STYLE Danish design brand Eberhart Furniture bring their blend of Scandiindustrial style to Urban Avenue

Pots of Colour As Autumn makes itself feel known, plant some pretty pots to brighten the scene.

A

s pots of tired summer bedding are tipped onto the compost heap to make way for autumn and winter flowers, there are certain things you should do now to ensure your container plants for the cooler months get off to a good start. Here’s our step-bystep guide...

Provide good drainage Once you’ve emptied your pots of summer bedding and given the containers a good clean, line the base of your pots with crocks from broken terracotta pots or bits of polystyrene that your new bedding comes in, to make sure you have ample drainage for new autumn and winter bedding.

As autumn rains come, if your pots are exposed to the elements, the roots of your plants can become too wet if you don’t include sufficient drainage when you plant them up.

Mix a handful of sharp stone or grit into the fresh compost to help drainage and stand your pots on feet, so the moisture doesn’t come up through the pot and soak the roots from below.

Fill pots well Unlike summer bedding, which grows rapidly to cover the whole area of the pot, winter bedding is slower to make an impact - so it’s best to plant winter bedding closer together in tubs, troughs and hanging baskets.

They won’t have as much growing time as summer plants had to make their mark, so don’t penny-pinch on the amount you buy.

Don’t over-water Winter-flowering pansies and other bedding won’t need as much water as your summer annuals did, so don’t mix water-retaining granules into the fresh compost, or you’ll end up with rotten roots and wilted plants.

Shelter containers If you have planted up pots with spring bulbs, violas and pansies, put them in a sheltered spot say under a porch or cold greenhouse when the winter weather is at its worst - but make sure they get maximum light so they can benefit from even weaker sunshine.

As the weather gets cooler, protect plants by grouping containers and moving them closer to the wall to keep off wind and rain.

Choose plants wisely Some bedding only appears in the autumn, including dwarf Michaelmas daisies, pot chrysanthemums and miniature cyclamen, while orange-berried winter cherries and ornamental kales appear slightly later on in the season. All can be put to good use in a container and enhanced with evergreen foliage plants.

Garden centres will now be awash with autumn and winter bedding, including pansies and violas, wallflowers, dianthus and cyclamen. Use a showstopper as the centre plant and then use trailers, such as creeping Jenny or ivy, around the outside of your pots, filling the gaps with pretty violas and pansies.

VALUE ADDED 6 Home improvements that will add value to your property - according to a professional

Prefer to stay put and renovate than move?

Lisa Salmon seeks some expert tips for the projects that promise the best returns.

I

ncreasing numbers of homeowners are avoiding the expense - plus the physical and emotional upheaval - of moving house, by staying put and renovating instead.

In fact, the number of people choosing to do this has risen fivefold since 2013, according to a recent report by Hiscox Insurance - increasing from 3% of households to 15%, representing more than four million homes in the UK. Supporting the notion that we’re becoming a nation of home-improvers, figures from Halifax show that planning applications have risen by a quarter over the last five years. Meanwhile, Hiscox found the average budget for home renovations was around £16,100 for each project, although 18% of the householders surveyed expected to spend more than £25,000.

So what improvements are they making?

According to the research, homeowners are most likely to either renovate a bathroom or add a new one, followed by kitchen improvements, installing a new boiler or central heating system, or creating more living space. However, not every homeimprovement project will automatically add value to a property.

“Cheap is cheap - nothing kills the value of a property more than doing cheap work in it. Estate agents have told me they’ve seen sellers with tears in their eyes, when they find out that construction work worth thousands of pounds hasn’t added a single penny to their home,” says Ash Chawla, chief executive of the design/build company Duke of Design (dukeofdesign.co.uk). “We live in a world which has become very aware and knowledgeable. There are no shortcuts to creating value to your home.”

So, what does Duke of Design recommend?

Here are six home improvements Chawla says could be a wise investment...

Conservatories The simplest home addition is a conservatory, which Virgin Money research says can raise the value of your home by as much as 15% if it’s included as part of an extension, or by 5% if it’s just a simple conservatory.

Chawla says choosing the right materials can help conservatories blend well with modern and period properties. “The key is to use materials other than the commonly seen white UPVC,” he says.

“A muted, more sophisticated palette of taupe and grey-painted wooden frames camouflages itself in a natural setting, and the reflective properties of glass help it blend into the outside space more easily.”

way of spending money on your home is by having an extension built, saying the addition of a new bedroom could boost the average home’s value by 11.2%. They reckon a new kitchen, meanwhile, will typically increase a home’s value by 5.5% (or £12,400 based on an average UK house price of £226,071), although 28% think a new kitchen can lift a home’s value by as much as 10%.

A single storey extension can be built in as little as three weeks once planning permission is granted, says Chawla, who suggests an average sized £30,000 single-storey rear kitchen extension on a £500,000 home can lead to a profit of £30,000-£35,000.

“Aside from a rise in property value, you also benefit from a stunning home environment with added usable space,” Chawla adds.

Remodelling Remodelling an existing kitchen - by adding high quality units and flooring, purpose lighting and redecorating - could increase a property’s value by as much as 4%, according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors - although Chawla warns that expensive purchases, such as kitchen units and flooring, should be kept in proportion to the value of the property.

“The most successful kitchen extensions consider the whole home,” he explains. “By removing internal walls, you can connect the kitchen to the dining room, creating a functional space for entertaining.” Alternatively, you may also choose to link the kitchen to the garden by using large windows or patio doors.

Garden landscaping “Often overlooked, the garden can become the hub of home life and can work seamlessly with your home, as if brick and foliage were the most natural partners in the world,” says Chawla.

For family-sized homes, ensure the outdoor space is suitable for the growing needs of a family with low-maintenance planting and landscaping, while a small courtyard garden at a city apartment may appeal to younger working couples. The cost of landscaping a garden can be as little as £2,000, but Chawla says spending a little more can lead to a potential return of £40,000 on a £500,000 house.

Chawla points out. “By providing viable parking facilities, you can increase your property price dramatically,” he promises.

You could either convert land at the front or side of your property to add a driveway or parking space, or add a garage - possibly by converting an existing outside building, if there’s suitable access, or by building a garage extension. Full garage conversions commonly add up to 8-10% to your property value, says Chawla, particularly in areas where parking is a premium.

Loft and basement conversions The Hiscox report says loft extensions are the most popular planning request, and Chawla says loft conversions are usually less troublesome than basement conversions. They don’t always require planning permission, although they do need to meet building regulations to be classed as a room. The Nationwide Building Society says the average cost to convert an attic is around £20,000, which rises to approximately £35,000-£45,000 if you’re creating a dormer loft with double bedroom and bathroom.

Just boarding out the loft for storage is unlikely to make much impact on the price of your property, and Chawla stresses: “If financial gain is your goal, converting the loft into a usable room is the way to go. The benefits of adding an additional bedroom to your property can be huge - loft conversions can add as much as £65,000-£75,000 to your property value.”

An alternative is to add a basement conversion if space allows, but Chawla says this is a complicated procedure and potential problems, such as water ingress and foundation issues, can be major concerns.

es, the garden may look untidy now, with beds full of faded flowers and herbaceous borders past their summer flourish - but some plants come into their own in winter, providing eye-catching seedheads and colourful stems through the cooler months.

Andrew Hellman, garden manager at RHS Garden Hyde Hall, has helped create the new Winter Garden there, which focuses on herbaceous plants with striking colours and texture in the foliage and seedheads to add interest in winter.

Here are his top plants for adding structure and colour to the garden scene during the cooler months...

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Phantom’ It’s not just evergreen shrubs and trees that are important for winter interest. This shrub flowers in late summer and early autumn, with conical panicles of pale pink and white flowers. The faded flowers remain on into the winter, pale puffs at the ends of darker bare stems.

Don’t cut down all your finishedflowering perennials, as their seedheads and stems may look stunning in winter, writes Hannah Stephenson.

“Their texture captures the low winter sun particularly well and you may be tempted to cut a few stems for the house,” Hellman observes.

“Hydrangeas let you know when it is time to cut the stems back, as green leaf buds start to show in late winter. Prune to a framework of new growth, just remove the flowerheads for more but smaller blooms or to the lowest set of buds for fewer but larger blooms.”

Iris sibirica ‘Silver Edge’ Siberian irises produce hearty clumps of slim foliage and delicate iris flowers in shades of purple on tall stout stems. “At RHS Hyde Hall, we grow them in our winter garden less for the flowers and more for the dark seedheads, standing proud atop rich coppery stems from late summer though winter,” says Hellman.

“The seedpods look like a grouping of hungry baby birds, mouths wide for food. They pair well in winter with grasses, the dark seedheads contrasting with the pale foliage of the grass. Eventually, they may collapse from snow or wind and can be clipped to leave tidy mounds of the copper foliage.”

Hakonechloa macra ‘Nicolas’ This low-growing grass makes neat small mounds growing only about 35cm high. It arches over gracefully and moves gently in the breeze. The cultivar Nicolas has bright red autumn colour that eventually fades to a deep golden hue.

Most people find the dried foliage irresistible to run their fingers through and it will grow in full sun to part shade and can even handle exposed locations. It looks equally good in large drifts in borders, or under raised shrubs, as it does cascading over the sides of a pot.

“Stout, with several whorls of seedheads, each emerging out of the previous to 90cm high, make this plant look like it was designed by Dr Seuss” Phlomis russeliana “Seedheads are a much underused feature of gardens in winter,” says Hellman. “Turkish sage is a tough plant for a sunny position, with large hairy leaves and stems of pale yellow flowers. It’s these stems and seedheads that make this a key plant in any winter planting.”

The seedheads glisten when touched by frost and stand firm as birds hang from the stems to feast on the seeds. Phlomis holds its own in a border, growing well between shrubs, and its weedsmothering foliage makes it a great addition to a low-maintenance planting scheme.

Panicum virgatum ‘Northwind’ Grasses are brilliant for winter interest, and

this switchgrass cultivar is one of the best. It grows very upright to 1.5m without flopping.

Pink flowers are followed by clear yellow autumn colour and, finally, pale winter foliage.

Its columnal shape and clear base make it good to use in a formal planting design, or as an architectural accent in looser planting.

Underlighting would look particularly striking with this grass.

“It grows quite densely and makes a wonderful rustle when the wind blows through it,” adds Hellman. “It will happily stand through March when it needs to be cut down to allow the new growth to take over.”

Datisca cannabina An unusual plant where space allows, datisca has tall upright stems with fine foliate growing 2m or more. The stems arch over at the tips with tassels of greenish white flowers. They retain these stems and tassels through the winter with a ghostly appearance as they dry.

The tall stems have plenty of space between them, allowing you to see whatever is planted behind. “They pair well with lower plants,” notes Hellman, “such as the dense heads of stonecrops (Hylotelephium ‘Herbstfreude’) in a border.”
