Getting your wardrobe ready for Autumn

A

s we move into Autumn, it’s out with the old and in with the new with promises of a new season filled with style. But going from one season to another is never easy work. No matter the size of your wardrobe, it will never be big enough to accommodate every item you have. You cannot hang Winter coats next to Summer dresses as you will never be able to see what you have tucked away inside. Now is the perfect time of year to assess how your Autumn/Winter wardrobe is looking and store away your Summer clothes. It’s time to detox your wardrobe and here are five steps on how to get organised for Autumn.

1. ORGANISATION IS KEY You need to be able to see everything you have in your wardrobe otherwise you will just never wear it. Hang up the important pieces, so you can see the best bits every day. Fold your jeans and stack them so you can see each one, and purge your t-shirt drawer.

2. STORAGE IS IMPORTANT Firstly, make a separate pile for things that aren’t seasonally appropriate anymore and store them until it starts to get warmer. Be ruthless, if you didn’t wear an item at all last year, get rid of it. Then put the remaining pieces in storage boxes where they will not be cluttering up your wardrobe.

3. THE DETOX Start by removing the clothes that are stained, ripped, or faded beyond recognition. Get rid of clothes that don’t fit once and for all. Try everything on, that way you know it fits you and your body shape. Reassess all trend purchases and start building your own style from timeless pieces and clothing that suits your style personality. Lastly, try experimenting with less clothes in your wardrobe, 6 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7

you will be surprised how much you wear and love the items you have left yourself with.

4. WHAT DO TO WITH THE CLOTHES YOU DON’T WEAR Make separate mini mountains for family and friends, for charity and for resale. Categorising the items you want to purge from your wardrobe is a great way to keep the process simple.

5. FILLING THE GAPS Now you can see what you have in your wardrobe and you can identify any gaps that you need to fill to pull outfits together. Make a shopping list and stick to it. If you often spend money on things you don’t end up wearing then shop smarter. Before buying a piece refer back to your list and be honest with yourself on whether you will actually wear it or not. If you do bring the item home, if after one week you haven’t worn it, take it back to the shop before your refund expires.
