In addition to traditional roast turkey with all the trimmings, there is a herb crusted fillet of bream or Portobello mushroom, pumpkin and chestnut Wellington to choose for the main course. For dessert there is Christmas pudding with warm brandy butter sauce, dark chocolate delice, or glazed orange tart followed by coffee and mini mince pies.

Afterwards guests can dance the night away or just relax and enjoy the party until the early hours. Whatever you decide to do, the party nights are the perfect excuse to get all of your friends, family and colleagues together and have a fun and memorable evening.

Preparation time: Less than 30 mins Cooking time: 10 to 30 mins Makes 6-8 biscuits Ingredients • 100g/3½oz unsalted butter, softened at room temperature • 100g/3½oz caster sugar • 1 free-range egg, lightly beaten • 275g/10oz plain flour • 1 tsp vanilla extract • To decorate • 400g/14oz icing sugar • 3-4 tbsp water • 2-3 drops food colourings Method 1. Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.

2. Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl until combined.

3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, a little at a time, until well combined.

4. Stir in the flour until the mixture comes together as a dough.

5. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured work surface to a thickness of 1cm/½in.

6. Using Halloween-style biscuit cutters, cut biscuits out of the dough and carefully place onto the baking tray.

7. Bake the biscuits for 8-10 minutes, or until pale golden-brown. Set aside to harden for 5 minutes, then cool on a wire rack.

8. For the icing, sift the icing sugar into a large mixing bowl and stir in enough water to create a smooth mixture. Stir in the food colouring.

9. Carefully spread the icing onto the biscuits using a knife and set aside until the icing hardens.

ith so much depending on exam results these days, it is an anxious time for students and parents as they decide what to do when results are published on the 18th of August.

If results are not as good as expected, going through the UCAS clearing process may be an option but you may have to settle for a less prestigious university or for a course that is not what you have set your heart on. An alternative is to retake some A-level exams and apply to university the following year while gaining some work experience.

London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017 Highlights A world of catwalks, celebrities, and glamour

ondon Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity to showcase some of the world’s leading fashion talent, with the schedule packed with shows, presentations, showrooms, events and parties from the best and brightest names in the industry.

As usual, celebrities swarmed to attend the fashion event of the year – including Ellie Goulding, Yasmin Le Bon, Cara Delevingne, Eva Herzigova, Steve McQueen, Daisy Lowe, Fearne Cotton and Samantha Cameron, It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends. The world watches as fashion history is made.

While most of us are thinking about our winter wardrobes, designers were showcasing next year’s Spring/Summer Collections. So what does SS17 have in store for us, according to Britain’s most trend-setting brands?

Burberry opened the doors to Makers House, Soho, its new London Fashion Week venue with the presentation of its inaugural straight-to-consumer collection.

The origins of the new men’s and women’s collections, which were shown together for the first time, are found in the spirit of Nancy Lancaster’s interior and garden designs and Virginia Woolf ’s novel ‘Orlando’.

Inspired by a reflection on the way a house changes its character over the centuries driven by the people, clothes 5 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 6

and cultures that inhabit it, the collection combines noble and authentic fabrics, blending denim and sweatshirting with cashmere and pyjama silks. t’s hard for me to admit because I love it, but the end of summer can be a relief for lots of people.

ighting is a key architectural and design element in our home and as the nights start to draw in it is the perfect time to refresh lighting fixtures and take your interior style to the next level.

Lighting is often referred to as the “jewellery of the home” as stylish lighting accessories can often be used to finish off the look of your interior. And although home design trends don’t go in and out as quickly as fashion, there are still some stand-out lighting styles that have gained recent popularity in today’s most designer-focused homes.

Here’s our list of the top lighting trends of 2016 to illuminate your new year.

Industrial Luxe

The industrial interior look is one that has been around for several seasons now, but for AW 2016 we have seen a twist on this trend that introduces a little glamour. The industrial interior look is all about exposed raw materials and a pared back style but it is time to start adding shiny decorative elements to help offset the rougher textures seen around the scheme. Lighting is a great place to start when looking to incorporate these touches into your interior with many designers adding a wide range of glossy metal finishes to their collection. A personal favourite of ours are the hand-spun Stanley pendant lights by British lighting manufacturer Original BTC. Group them together for a dramatic effect or mix metals for a laid-back, eclectic look.

It’s time to get creative! In 2015 we saw a steep rise in the way technology is being used in the home sector with many retailers offering virtual interior design services through their websites and apps. This trend looks set to continue as lighting brands start to introduce customisation tools giving the customer the ability to pick finishes, sizes and configurations to suit their individual space. A good example of this is the Bocci 28 pendant, which comes in 68 different colours and be configured in random vertical compositions or cluster shapes

Geometric Lighting

One of the hottest lighting trends right now is geometric lighting fixtures. With clean lines and simple yet striking designs, geometric structures should standout on their own and provide a focal point to the room. Although geometric lighting fixtures invoke a minimalist aesthetic, they’re not just for modern and contemporary interiors. The key to their versatility is in the simplicity of the design. The geometric trend is a great option if you’re looking to give your space a modern or midcentury vibe.

Oversized Fixtures

Lighting fixtures that make a bold statement and serve as the focal point of a room are trending. If you are looking to make an instant impact, why not try a larger-than-life design to add some style and humour to your interior. You don’t have to have a large home to take part in this trend – a statement pendant in a kitchen or huge floor lamp above a dining room table can make for a beautiful style accent. Homes with tall ceilings or a large hallways and landings can also benefit from the increased sizes of today’s most popular lights.

Warm Metals

Nature Inspired

One of the next trends for the home will be lighting inspired from elements of nature: in organic forms, in the spectrum of natural colours and with particular reference to the world of leaf and plant silhouettes. Self-Cleaning Conservatory Roof Glass

Fact or Fiction?

S

elf-cleaning glass was once described as “an impossible dream”, but thanks to an intensive research and development programme many years ago by the world’s leading glass manufacturer, Pilkington, self-cleaning glass is neither fiction or an old wives tale, and it can even over time (with a little precipitation to assist) make bird droppings disappear!

Pilkington Activ, was the world’s first self-cleaning glass and has a unique dual action that harnesses the forces of nature to keep the glass free from organic dirt, providing a

surface that requires less cleaning, whilst also at the same time delivering clearer, better-looking windows.

The secret of Pilkington Activ is a special coating that reacts with ultra-violet (UV) rays from natural daylight (which works even on overcast days and during the night) to break down and disintegrate organic dirt.

Organic dirt generally comes from livings plants and creatures (i.e. tree sap or fingerprints or bird droppings, whilst inorganic dirt comes from non-living sources (i.e. cement or plaster dust etc.). The special coating needs 5-7

days exposure to daylight to activate fully. Self-cleaning glass really is no fable, as its special coating breaks down organic dirt, whilst reducing the adherence of inorganic dirt.

When rain water runs down self-cleaning glass it washes the loosened dirt away (both organic and inorganic), as the special photo catalytic process used on the coating causes water droplets to spread out to form a “sheet”, enabling dirt particles on the surface to be easily picked up by water and washed off the glass. Inorganic dirt will only be removed by water. Compared with conventional glass, thanks to its hydrophilic form, water on self-cleaning glass dries very quickly, reducing unsightly streaks or marks.

The special coating on Pilkington Activ self-cleaning glass can break down even heavy deposits of organic dirt, but does need UV light reaching the glass to enable the breaking down process to work. So during long dry dusty spells, or if windows get heavily soiled, it is advisable to clean the glass using a hosepipe to replicate rainfall or a soft cloth and warm soapy water to enable the process to start all over again. Please note that a period of reactivation may be required, which again is typically 5-7 days.

The beauty of Pilkington Activ’s special coating is that it lasts the lifetime of the glazing itself, as it will not be worn away or rubbed off under normal conditions. The coating is integral to the glass, it will not flake or discolour, and can only be affected if the surface itself is damaged, for example, by abrasive cleaners or steel wool. The coating is environmentally friendly, containing harmless chemical substances already found in the home (i.e. in bath oils and toothpaste). In fact as only small amounts of cleaning agents are ever needed, selfcleaning glass is kinder to the environment than normal glass, which needs regular cleaning.

Self-cleaning glass can be installed on almost any exterior application, such as windows, conservatories and glass roofs. It can be installed vertically or at an angle of at least 10 degrees, although most efficient at an angle of 30 degrees or more. Self-cleaning glass is ideal for inaccessible windows where organic dirt normally collects like skylights. Specialists and Pilkington glass installers Hazlemere Windows, Doors & Conservatories, advise that self-cleaning glass will prove ineffective if installed under

an overhang or in a position where daylight and/or rain cannot reach it, as it has been designed for exterior use only. It should also be noted that slightly darker tints perform slightly better than clear glass in terms of heat reflection.

Self-cleaning glass is an excellent long term investment, as over a period it will save time and money, plus from the cleaning standpoint it is far safer than ordinary glass windows, particularly for conservatories.

Pilkington self-cleaning glass can be combined with other glass products in insulating glass units to provide benefits such as thermal insulation, noise reduction, solar control and fire protection. Pilkington Activ is available in clear or blue tinted toughened glass for increased safety and security. It is therefore safe to say that self-cleaning glass is no longer fiction, but a fact.

amie Blakey, however, shuns the red carpet lifestyle beloved by her coterie of famous clients, and lives in a chic shoreside house, with a laid-back atmosphere which is totally in tune with her relaxed rock-n-roll design ethos.

“It’s a house by the beach, of course, but I think of it as an open, communal home where we can all relax and have fun. I hate formality, and that’s why this place works for me. I sit on the deck looking out to sea and it really inspires my designs,” says the designer and owner of hugely successful fashion label One Teaspoon, famous for its denim cut-off shorts, ripped jeans and flowing tops.

The furniture in the Refectory collection has inset doors with a simple stepped profile. The Collection features signature pieces inspired by antique English icebox designs using hand selected quartered white oak. Hand brushed fitted cabinetry provides character scale and proportion.

modern interpretation of a classic. “The hardware in the refectory collection had to be beautiful as well adhere to this notion of scale that is inherent in it. I think of the hardware as cabinet jewellery and, as such, the character of the room is often defined by the choices made. It is important that it function well within a hectic modern family,” said Christopher Peacock.
