ST ALBANS CHRISTMAS CRACKER RETURNS
housands of people are expected to attend the return of the St Albans Christmas Cracker – the event that launches the District’s festive season. The spectacular street festival will take place in the City Centre from noon until 6pm on Sunday 21 November. St Peter’s Street will be closed to traffic to help create a safe and vibrant atmosphere with measures in place to guard against COVID. Among the attractions will be live music, a Santa’s grotto, scores of market stalls, funfair rides and street performers. Much of the family-friendly entertainment will be free with something to suit people of all ages. The event is organised by St Albans City and District Council and as an anti-COVID measure, it has been decided NOT to have the traditional evening Christmas lights switch-on. This is to ensure that a dense throng of people do not gather before the main stage for the countdown. Instead, there will be a number of magical moments, lighting up the City Centre throughout the day. Among the light installations returning to the City Centre are the highly-popular glittering carriage and the giant bauble. There will also be a snow machine, lit-up stilt walkers and low-noise pyrotechnics.

Community Safe Zone: a place for more vulnerable visitors to go if they need some peace and quiet. Councillor Mandy McNeil, Vice-Chair of the Council’s Regeneration and Business Committee who has lead responsibility for the event, said: “I am thrilled that the Christmas Cracker is returning after the pandemic forced the cancellation of last
year’s event. “The pandemic is, of course, still with us and we are taking a number of precautions to guard against the virus. These include expanding the event area to create more space and providing free face masks for those that want them. “We ask people to support our efforts in this regard by, for instance, avoiding coming to the event if they display any symptoms. “The Christmas Cracker is a terrific way to get the District’s festive season underway and we want people to be able to enjoy themselves in a safe environment. “There are a host of wonderful attractions for people of all ages and interests to enjoy with the street festival taking place throughout the afternoon and early evening. “The event will also provide a welcome boost to the local economy by bringing many extra visitors to the City Centre where they can take advantage of our fabulous City Centre shops and the local produce on sale at market stalls.”

PRÊT-À-PORTEA RETURNS FOR AUTUMN / WINTER 2021
T
he Berkeley has unveiled its Autumn/ Winter 2021 Prêt-à-Portea collection – a playful and stylish selection of couture cakes inspired by designers from Ganni to Gucci. A firm favourite with fashionistas with a sweet tooth, Prêt-à-Portea gives a contemporary twist to afternoon tea with a collection of bold catwalk-inspired creations. This season’s collection opens with Balenciaga Couture – a striking ensemble reimagined as a velvety mandarin cheesecake with orange confit on chocolate sablé, topped with a Dulcey cream and oversized chocolate hat. To mark fashion icon Iris Apfel’s 100th birthday, The Berkeley pastry team have created a spiced biscuit intricately iced with Apfel’s trademark red lipstick and oversized glasses. Stella McCartney’s psychedelic blue jumpsuit has been transformed into a cassis mousse with blackcurrant jelly and a zigzag of Joconde sponge. Meanwhile, a Pink Lady apple pavlova with Granny Smith apple compote, topped with apple jam and Chantilly cream, pays homage to Giambattista Valli’s powder-pink, avant-garde couture. Ganni appears in Prêt-à-Portea this season for the very first time: the cult Danish brand’s look from Copenhagen Fashion Week becomes a hazelnut dacquoise with salted caramel, encased with Valrhona chocolate mousse and finished with a passion fruit crème diplomate and chocolate shard. Fendi’s oversized tote is recreated as a cinnamon chocolate blondie, encased with Ivoire chocolate and finished with desiccated coconut ‘fur’. Finally, as Gucci marks its 100th anniversary with a collection starring the label’s signature

equestrian style, the Prêt-à-Portea team have created a hero, showstopper of a cake – designed to share – in their honour. A red velvet and mascarpone mousse is topped with a hand-painted galaxy chocolate dome, while inside sits a citrus marshmallow dipped in white chocolate. The whole ensemble is finished with a chocolate truffle riding hat filled with dark chocolate ganache. The Autumn Winter season of Prêt-à-Portea is served from 1pm - 5.30pm every day, priced from £64 per person. AWARD-WINNING ART THAT IS
A
ntonio Russo, whose clients include movie legend Leonardo DiCaprio is selling his work for charity after being diagnosed with brain cancer. Antonio Russo AKA Stony, who went from being a street graffiti artist to winning prestigious global art prizes and having his work displayed in the Louvre in Paris, is raising funds for The Brain Tumour Charity. The 56-year-old, who has also produced tracks with Kanye West and Pink, has been producing bold designs with inspirational messages throughout his career - bringing hope to people with cancer. “I’ve been involved in art and music all my life and have been fortunate to travel the world and work with some amazing people,” said Hertfordshire -born Antonio who was diagnosed with cancer in 2019. “I stay positive despite my diagnosis and it is fantastic that my work inspires people and helps them through tough times.” “I’ve had two surgeries, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and in January they gave me nine months to live, but I’ve also been on a clinical 44 NOVEMBER 2021
trial for a cancer drug with Oxford University and people are still surviving, I draw great strength from that. My cancer is terminal but I’m the biggest survivor in the world.” His works now hang in galleries in Mayfair, Miami and New York and his exhibitions attract star-studded guest lists with Gwyneth Paltrow and other stars big fans of his abstract work. Snooker star Ronnie O’Sullivan, who is a committed art lover, has become a close friend after buying his canvasses. “Ronnie is a fantastic guy and good buddy, and he’s really knowledgeable about art,” added Antonio. “I have lots of high-profile clients but the most important thing for me is that my work touches people. Getting awards and having work sell for big money is great but the value in helping just one person who gets pleasure, hope, comfort, from looking at them is priceless.” Antonio, who has two children aged 25 and 22, was born in Luton but moved to Sicily as a baby before returning with his family to the UK when he was 12. He had been painting since he was three-years-old and was drawn to street art as a teenager.

SPEAKING VOLUMES
“Graffiti was a way of expressing myself and I joined a community of street artists who were just dedicated to their art. They were artists, not taggers.” added Antonio. “I was always creative, it was about expressing myself through art. We did have to be careful and make sure we didn’t get caught but when you are a teenager that is part of the excitement.” It was on the streets that he got the name Stony – a twist on Tony – and Antonio Russo AKA Stony is now emblazoned across the art world. Music inspires a lot of Antonio’s artwork. “I’d been playing drums since I was 15 and was in bands and then ended up as a DJ and producer with my own record label and working for Sony BMG with their stars. I used to get flown to LA regularly to work with artists like Kanye West, Pink and Eliza Doolittle but when I was in my hotel room, I was always painting because it is always a part of me. It helps me relax and being able to create pieces that make people happy is something very special.” His abstract canvases and sculpture grew in popularity and global acclaim was followed by a
string of awards. The accolades rolled in with ‘The Effetto Arte’ Award 2014, the Leone Dei Dogi Award 2015 by the Venice Biennale, Best Selling Published Artist 2016 by the Fine Art Trade Guild. the International Prize Caravaggio ‘Great Master of Art’ 2018 award in Milan. “Raising funds for charity with my art work will be my greatest piece,” he added. “My work sells for £10,000 upwards and I can’t quite believe that myself, and I’m proud to be a success story in the UK. I hope now that by raising funds for this great charity that I can make a lasting impression for others. I’m free with what I say in the words on my paintings and that expression helps people which is wonderful to know.” “People have told me the art gives them strength. They had fear but seeing my work gives them hope and that spurs me on to do more and raise as much as I can. What keeps them going, keeps me going.” To view Antonio’s latest Art Collections for sale visit arussoart.com stonyart.com

T
he products are designed to be waterproof, fully-edible, high-energy snacks and are also vegetarian. Just wash and go! The idea behind the product comes from biologist Daniel Bedford and nutritionist Malgorzata Sobieralska who are passionate about reducing single-use plastics, reducing their carbon footprint and “cleaning up our act for future generations!” Their investor, a keen cyclist, was getting really fed up seeing so many energy wrappers littering the countryside when he was out and about so decided to do something about it. Following two years of research and development work at Rothamsted, Ryeharvest are now launching their first product - the hazelnut and chocolate chip energy flapjack, known as Wellbars. The products are packaging-free, plasticfree and litter-free and are locally produced. Daniel Bedford at Ryeharvest commented: “Here at Ryeharvest we are doing our best to help everyone move towards a healthier and greener future. We want people to enjoy fantastic energy snacks while playing their part for the environment. We are trying to reduce the negative impact of single use plastic packaging around food and leave the world a little bit better as a result.” Nicole Sadd, CEO at Rothamsted Enterprises said “We are delighted to be supporting Ryeharvest with their innovative product launch. At Rothamsted, affecting climate change is vital and we believe passionately in supporting

our tenants to enable real change. Ryeharvest’s product is innovative, eco-friendly and plastic-free and we could not be prouder of all that they are achieving.” If you are a local restaurant, coffee shop, café or retail outlet and are looking for a new, ecofriendly energy product to stock, get in touch with the team at Ryeharvest to find out more. Alternatively, if you are a runner, cyclist, swimmer or general fitness enthusiast, Wellbars will give you a healthy energy boost without creating waste on the way. You can simply pop it in your pocket and eat on the go after washing it. The products are on sale now at Rothamsted Café, as well as Thompsons Close Café and Emily’s Teashop in Whitwell, and are coming soon to Healthy and Wise in Harpenden. THE RISE OF ACTIVEWEAR AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU
T
he sportswear industry is clearly a winner in 2021 as consumers continue to spend time at home exercising or on long dog walks. With the majority of business meetings taking place in front of a screen at home, leggings, tracksuit bottoms and loungewear have quickly become inherent pieces of our professional wardrobes. The U.S. sports apparel market will reach $113bn in 2021. This translates to a worldwide expectation for the industry of nearly £400 billion by 2024. 400. Billion. Pounds. Data confirms that athleisure orders jumped 84% during the pandemic with sales of leggings five times higher in December 2020 than they were in April 2020. And order volumes for men’s athleisure clothing sales were 20% higher than in 2019. Sustainability, a long-time trend in fashion, has also arrived in the athleisure market. Consumers continue to discover and invest in new products with sustainable, durable and high-quality materials. Girlfriend Collective - available at boutique-8.com – is ethically made activewear made from plastic bottles and fishing nets. You wouldn’t know it from the look and feel, but you’re diverting waste from landfills. Boutique 8’s top selling brand Alo Yoga is sweatshop-free, with their High Waisted Airlift Legging being particularly popular. Brands and the boutiques that house them must adapt to cater for the new reality and needs of their consumers. It is no longer enough for brands to create a functional or even aesthetically appealing product — many consumers expect ethical manufacture and debate on social and political issues. This stays true within the shop environment and at Boutique 8 in Radlett plastic bags are a thing of the past and the store is cashfree. Ultimately, brand performance will continue to thrive around those who understand their goals and leverage the right voices to reach the right consumers on the right channels in order to achieve their objectives and communicate their brand values. Positioned in the middle of the high-street, Boutique 8 aims to do this with

a hyper-local approach whereby service and that all important morning coffee are key in Radlett. Customers become friends and friends are rewarded for their loyalty. The approach extends to online sales with motivational messages in packages, tiered VIP discounts and personalised emails. The boutique does not stock your standard activewear but rather focuses on highquality brands sourced directly from Los Angeles, New York and Sydney. New customers online get 10 per cent off their first order and along with Alo Yoga, Koral are the headliners with Boutique 8 founder Alice-Emma Starr commenting: I’ve been passionate about activewear for years and as a regular gym-goer plus busy mother, I’ve selected products that look great in the gym but then last the whole day - from coffee and lunch through to school pick up and relaxing on the sofa.” Loungewear from Varley and Onzie with tennis gear from Lija and Lucky in Love are available as well as many other handpicked exclusive brands. There are small collections of menswear and girls too along with accessories such as high-quality protein supplements, gym and yoga mat bags, barre socks and bath salts. Make sure you look good for that next gym session or Zoom meeting.

The Other Side of Lockdown
H
elping teenagers become confident, independent adults after 18 months of lockdown means grasping new opportunities and stepping out of comfort zones. Drawing on her school career experience, Lara Péchard, Head at St Margaret’s School in Bushey, has some advice on how parents can encourage their children to develop the soft skills we need as adults. Throughout lockdown we have all had far fewer opportunities to meet new people. When we meet new people, we are given a chance to slightly reinvent ourselves, to present a different side of ourselves. The ability for a teenager to meet new people, to make new friends or try out new activities often gives them great confidence and helps them to grow. One of the reasons I have always enjoyed the power of a good school trip is because it can be a transformative experience. On every trip at least one child grows in confidence and often their entire academic profile improves. So, what opportunities can we now give our young people so that they get a chance to meet new people, enhance their sense of purpose and, with it, their self-worth?
EYES ON THE HORIZON: Encouraging your child to go off on a university visit or to attend an open day perhaps without a parent present is an important way to show you trust them ahead of taking this next step. This way they are far freer to make friends with someone 54 NOVEMBER 2021
on the train journey or able to get chatting on the tour. If your child is contemplating an apprenticeship or career, giving them a chance to undertake work experience can give them a great opportunity to be independent.
WORK PLACE: Many teachers, including myself, have relaxed about the possibility of young people holding weekend jobs. Of course, you don’t want it competing with their studies but they can be helpful in gaining confidence in a non-school environment. It could be that volunteering in a charity shop, for a local youth group or a care home gives them this sense of responsibility, freedom and chance to make new friends.
POSITION OF RESPONSIBILITY: Encouraging your child to try for captain of the basketball team, a prefect role or running the school newspaper might just be the nudge that they need to take them into a different role and group of friends. A pupil at interview only yesterday mentioned how organizing street parties has given her a sense of value and purpose. We can all benefit from informal opportunities to meet new people and to lead, but for our children who are still developing soft skills, learning how to communicate, empathize and get organized will help to nurture independent, confident adults. stmargarets-school.org.uk

WHY MY CHILDREN BOARD AT SCHOOL No-one was more surprised than Helen and Stuart when their 10-year-old son James asked if he could be a boarder at Felsted School. Soon though the couple began to realise that boarding gave James and his two younger brothers a valuable opportunity to develop confidence and independence, Helen explains.
“A
really positive experience of school gives children the confidence to be themselves,’ says Helen, an ambassador for ethical coffee manufacturer Safi, and mum to three boys. She and husband Stuart, a wealth management consultant, had been careful to choose a school that offered the breadth of education they wanted for James and his younger brothers, Ollie and Charlie. The family even moved house so that the children could be day pupils at Felsted, an independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged four to 18, set in 80 acres of idyllic north Essex countryside not far from the M11 and

Stansted Airport. It was after two years at Felsted that their eldest son, James, came home with the news that he wanted to be a boarder. ‘We weren’t expecting it,’ remembers Helen. ‘Some of James’ friends were boarding and kept telling him how much fun it was, so he felt he might be missing out on something.’ James began by boarding just one night a week. ‘He loved it,’ says Helen. ‘He did his homework straightaway, ate supper with his friends and then pitched into a different activity every evening movie nights, barbecues, sports and games, an endless list. The boarding house is so comfortable and cosy, and the houseparents look after the children wonderfully.’ As they have moved up through the years at Felsted, Helen and Stuart’s three sons have all spent part of the week boarding. ‘Boarders get a taste of independence, but in a safe and guided environment,’ says Helen. ‘I’ve seen huge changes in my sons – they’re responsible, sociable, respectful of others and know how to pull together as a team.’ While James, Ollie and Charlie split the week between home and school, many families choose full boarding at Felsted for seven nights a week, or weekly boarding for five nights. ‘Boarding is a great opportunity for young people to learn to get along with others and to develop their own personalities independently,’ says Helen. ‘There couldn’t be any better preparation for adult life in the modern world.” To find out more about boarding at Felsted, visit felsted.org

WELL-BEING:
IS FLEXI-BOARDING THE ANSWER? Jo Cameron, principal of Queenswood School in Hertfordshire, argues that boarding schools are particularly well placed to help teenagers maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Q: How can boarding schools help young people to stay healthy? A: There is a direct correlation between lack of physical activity, poorer mental health and lower aspirations among teenagers, and one recent study suggests that by the age of 14, girls are twice as likely as boys to drop sport altogether. But at boarding school pupils continue to enjoy being active throughout their education, with a hugely positive impact on their self-esteem as well as their academic results. And the range of co-curricular opportunities on offer at boarding schools, which are sadly under threat in many state schools, helps pupils to broaden their horizons and to relieve some of the pressure of exams. Q: Can boarding really help to reduce stress? A: Increasingly, boarding schools are taking a flexible approach to suit the needs of modern working families. Pupils can choose to board for just a few nights a week, allowing them to take part in those vital co-curricular activities well into the evening, and easing the stressful burden of the daily school run for parents.
“Increasingly, boarding schools are taking a flexible approach to suit the needs of modern working families”” Q: Is technology a threat to well-being? A: Young people face unprecedented pressures from social media, and schools have an important part to play in helping children develop a healthy relationship with technology. Here at Queenswood, mobile phones are allowed at certain times of the school day, but we have introduced initiatives for boarders such as ‘No Tech Tuesdays’, and the girls have really embraced the challenge! Q: How do boarders develop social skills? A: Boarding teaches pupils to be self-reliant, independent and responsible, and to mix with people from all over the world. At the same time, the level of pastoral care is exceptionally high. At Queenswood, for example, there are so many adults on hand to help girls negotiate those challenging teenage years – Houseparents, heads of House and heads of year, nurses, a residential school counselor, the school Chaplain. There is always someone to turn to. queenswood.org

NMRK JEWELLERY
NMRK Jewellery is an exciting new British Jewellery brand, based in St Albans. Launched out of lockdown this year, NMRK centres on affordable and responsibly handcrafted pieces. The first collection, The Gold Edit, focuses on elevated staples such as diamond studded hoops and stackable mini huggies. This powerful stylish essential to long outlast seasonal trends. After taking a jewellery course at St Albans School of Jewellery, NMRK Jewellery founder Tami Grewal discovered an unexpected and emerging passion. “On a whim, I enrolled at St Albans School of Jewellery, and fell head over heels with making jewellery. The fundamentals course was intimate and in-depth and and the tutors were incredible. I went in with a a clear idea of the style that felt like me, and I was helped along to learn techniques in order to achieve this. The ultimate goal is to be designing and hand creating my own simple and chic gold jewellery. Until that dream is realised, I have been working with a team to bring together this beautiful collection of gold and diamond earrings.” Unlike other demi fine brands, NMRK has gone against the trend of vermeil and plated pieces. “Compared with solid 9-karat gold and upwards, the quality of the item and durability just isn’t there with vermeil and plated items. The gold eventually wears down and you are left with dull faded base metal jewellery”. NMRK Jewellery specialises in lightweight luxury pieces crafted in 9-karat gold and diamond. The importance of high quality, sustainable and ethically sourced diamond and gold are the heart of their ethos. For the love of jewellery and of bringing luxury to your everyday. Which is the one for you? Here, we run down a selection of the most-hyped women’s designer and luxury scents of 2021…
Givenchy Interdit Rouge Eau de Parfum, £53.50 for 35ml, The Perfume Shop This spicy spin-off of the Givenchy bestseller sees piquant pimento leaf and ginger added to the original tuberose and jasmine-based juice. The lipstick red bottle is a thing of beauty, too.
Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia Eau de Parfum Spray, £77 for 50ml, The Perfume Shop Putting the titular blossom front and centre, the revamped Gorgeous Gardenia is richer than the original eau de toilette, with jasmine, patchouli, pear and a dash of brown sugar giving it added oomph.
74 NOVEMBER 2021
Cochine Vanille & Tabac Noir Eau De Parfum, £110 for 50ml Inspired by tropical summer evenings but ideal for winter wear, this beautifully balanced scent combines the sweetness of vanilla with smoky tobacco flower, cardamom and patchouli.
Marc Jacobs Perfect Intense Eau de Parfum Spray, £51 for 30ml, Escentual The follow-up to pale pink Perfect takes the ode to self-acceptance (inspired by Marc Jacob’s ‘I am perfect as I am’ tattoo) in a bold new direction, adding jasmine, roasted almond and sandalwood notes to the warm, comforting mix.
Moncler Pour Femme Eau de Parfum LED Digital Screen, £170 for 150ml, Selfridges The first ever women’s fragrance (there’s a men’s edition too) from the uber-cool outerwear brand is housed in an equally covetable bottle. Hooked up to an app, you can programme the scrolling LED display to whatever message you wish. Inside, you’ll find a musky, snow-inspired scent with crisp notes of jasmine and cedarwood.
Frederic Malle Editions de Parfums Synthetic Jungle, £128 for 50ml Looking for a truly distinctive scent? Look no further than Synthetic Jungle, the gorgeously green 1970s-inspired juice in which basil is bolstered with woody and leather notes, plus a bouquet of white florals.
Estee Lauder Sensuous Stars Eau de Parfum, £68 for 40ml Part of a luxury collection created in collaboration with eight different perfumers, Sensuous Stars is the work of Amandine Clerc-Marie, who was inspired by the idea of a moonlight stroll through a plum tree grove. Notes of Chinese plum, creamy orris flower and lavender make for a warming fruity blend.
Carolina Herrera Good Girl Superstars Eau De Parfum, £97.50 for 80ml, The Fragrance Shop The latest addition to the Good Girl family, this sparkly stiletto collector’s edition – which contains the muchloved jasmine, tuberose and tonka bean juice – is made for party season.

FIVE OF THE BEST
Coat trends to snuggle up in this Autumn KEAVA INSULATED QUILTED JACKET BRONZE, £62.95 (WAS £90), AVAILABLE FROM REGATTA
bright patterns or colours. However, this season’s trenches are all about simplicity. This could be the pandemic shifting our approach to fashion: there’s a growing trend towards buying less, and buying better – we’re slowly realising the catastrophic impact fast fashion is having on the environment, and we don’t actually need so much stuff. So this season, either dig out your trusty trench from the back of your wardrobe, or invest in a classic style that will last for years to come. Stick to camels, dark browns and blacks – the kinds of coats that will go with any outfit.
Puffy puffers WATER-REPELLENT CAPE JACKET IN KHAKI GREEN, £34.99; QUILTED CAP IN BLACK, £9.99; RIBBED LEGGINGS, AVAILABLE FROM H&M
From puffer capes to metallic moments, outerwear is all about having a bit of fun this season. By Prudence Wade.
LONG CLASSIC TRENCH COAT IN CAMEL, £79.99, AVAILABLE FROM ZARA
Caped crusaders While not the most practical of styles, you can’t deny the sheer drama of capes. They were everywhere on the autumn/winter catwalks, in all different styles, which means you can tailor the look to your personality. If you want a more relaxed vibe, go for an eclectic knitted style (as seen at Chloe), whereas Burberry modelled a more classic, formal take on the cape. If you really want to push the boat out – and keep extra warm in the process – the high street is currently loving capes made out of cosy puffer jacket material.
MARTINE CAPE IN CRIMSON CHECK, £119, AVAILABLE FROM BARBOU
Have you ever wanted to have a duvet day, but you really need to leave the house? Luckily, this season has you covered, because huge puffer jackets ruled the catwalks. The bigger, the better – and massively fluffy styles were all seen at Prada, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and more. This isn’t a time for sculpted outerwear, but unashamedly comfortable looks will last the distance.
Metallic moments Keen to continue the party throughout autumn and winter? Take a bit of disco inspiration in your outerwear, bringing a splash of gold, silver or bronze shimmer to your wardrobe. Chanel and Balmain sent space age trench coats down the catwalk, best worn with sleek dresses and stompy boots. Puffer jackets aren’t the most formal of styles, but transformed into a glittering shade, you’ll find them a lot more dressed up.
Go for green Every season, one colour reigns supreme. This year, there’s absolutely no denying it: green is everywhere. We’re not talking muted olives or understated moss tones – instead, green hues were big and bold, everywhere from Prada to Bottega Veneta. Wear your green however you want – in a tailored jacket or a big puffer coat – just make sure the shade is zingy and joyful.
TAILORED BUTTONED COAT IN APPLE GREEN, £99.99, AVAILABLE FROM ZARA
Transitional trenches Trench coats have a moment every year, normally with a quirky spin – from deconstructed styles, to 76 NOVEMBER 2021
LEATHER TRENCH COAT IN CHOCOLATE BROWN, £389; BAMPTON LEATHER LOAFERS IN BLACK, £129; LOLA COLOURBLOCK JUMPER IN BLUE, £89, AVAILABLE FROM HUSH.

brand that puts its community first So, what does this enable you to do? You simply select your clothing size at the top of the website, and when you do, all the imagery on the website changes to women of the same size – giving the customer a true representation of what the clothing will look like on them. Better still, the imagery is unedited, representing women from all walks of life; mums, nurses, teachers to name a few. Bamae’s co-founder, Dean Elsmore, said “Social media & well-known brands create a distortion of reality. They can promote a certain type of aesthetic that isn’t real. We’re trying to remove factors where people self-judge and question their self-worth based on appearance. With size and imagery, these kinds of things damage mental health. We wanted to create imagery which is nonedited, because that’s what people are.” Free from expectations, bamae want women to explore themselves and discover their signature style and fitness on their terms. t’s time to cosy up for cold weather, with woolly knits that will help you look cool but feel warm. What’s on the knitwear style agenda for autumn/winter? From vintageinspired sweaters to luxe loungewear, these are the trends set to be huge this season…
SWEATER VESTS Who would have thought Friends’ Chandler Bing would ever become a fashion icon? After sweater vests appeared on the catwalks at Gucci and Prada they’ve become an autumn must-have, with Ebay reporting searches for the sleeveless knits have jumped by 888% this year. How to style a sweater vest now? It’s all about layering. Team yours with a roll-neck top or statement collar blouse for a Seventies feel, or throw it back to the Nineties with a plain white tee, baggy jeans and a bucket hat.
CROPPED JUMPERS Have you finally said goodbye to skinny jeans (for now) and you’re wondering what to wear with wide-leg trousers or mom jeans? Cropped jumpers are the answer. Whether baggy or slim-fit, a short sweater is the ideal match for high-waisted denim, faux leather or soft, swishy trousers.
MAXI CARDIGANS This season’s must-have cardigan is long, slouchy and feels like wearing a big, warm hug. Easy to throw on over a maxi dress or jeans and a jumper, on bright autumn days, these belted beauties are so cosy you won’t even need a coat. 84 NOVEMBER 2021
COLOUR BLOCKING Forever wearing the same black and navy knits? Mix it up with statement pieces that combine cool colours and prints. Pastels and animal prints are big news this season. A bold jumper and jeans combo can be dressed up for evening with heels and a blazer.
S.E.W SUSTAINABLE LOUNGE WIDE LEG KNIT TROUSERS GREY, £55, AVAILABLE FROM MONSOON
KNITTED TROUSERS Looking to update your loungewear wardrobe ready for winter? A pair super-soft of knitted trousers will serve you well. Not only will you live in them at home, they’re great for running errands at the weekend – just add white trainers and a puffer jacket.

T
he shop was opened in 1971 by the late Christine Campbell, who jumped at the chance of fulfilling her dream of owning a haberdashery when a shop became vacant opposite her house in Beech Road. Chris ran the business for 46 years, expanding the premises by taking over the jewellers next door and building an extension where sewing and quilting classes took place. When the opportunity arose in June 2018 local mum of three, Simone Taylor decided to take a leap of faith to keep the legacy alive. Simone set about ushering in a new era for the shop, while maintaining the ethos that Chris had built up over the decades: To provide a ‘go-to’ destination to support people who create handmade, beautiful and unique items to treasure.
“It has been a lot of hard work over the last couple of years, but I am so pleased the shop is still going strong 50 years on! When mental health and well-being is such an important part of our daily lives with the added stresses we are all under, I am pleased to be part of a solution where crafters can get a wide range of good quality supplies to inspire their creativity.” To celebrate the shop’s birthday, Fashion ‘n’ Fabrics are having a series of sales throughout the entire month of December which will be advertised on the website. fashion-n-fabrics.com

This specialist service is led by a highly skilled team of Consultants supported by an experienced Children’s Nursing team, to provide a seamless service for children who need surgery, as well as keeping parents at ease throughout their journey with us. With numerous Consultants offering a multitude of experience across many specialities, we are proud to say that we cover: ENT, Orthopaedics, Urology and General Elective Surgery for children. “Up to now the main option for parents wanting to access private care for their children has been to go into London, with all the challenges that entails. We have spent a considerable amount of time planning our new service, to meet the needs

of families in our region. The investment in the team and the children’s ward in the hospital truly provides a much more accessible solution for families. Most of us are parents and we understand the anxieties which come with children needing surgery and I truly believe we are providing an exemplary service for children and their families at The Clementine Churchill Hospital.”– Lisa Trybus, Executive Director. “We are really excited that the ward has now come to fruition and we have deliberately built a highly experienced children’s nursing team, to ensure our littlest patients are treated like our own children. We look forward to welcoming you.” – Jan Elliot, Sister – Children & Young People. “I am delighted to say that when children do rarely need ENT surgery, we are now able to provide this essential service at The Clementine Churchill Hospital. The new paediatric ward is exceptionally well designed and staffed by experienced caring paediatric nurses, geared towards children and their parents having an excellent inpatient experience. How to dress for the party season
T
his time of year is always crazy busy and after months of not going out, you may be asking yourself, “what do I wear?” for every social engagement you have coming up, but fear not! My tips on how to dress will ease your pre-party panic. This year there is a sense of ‘go big or go home’ after a missed party season in 2020, say goodbye to loungewear and hello to sequins. If you are about to celebrate the festive season with real life friends and family then the occasion is going to demand a lot more than a nice top and jeans. Be a bit extra this year, because socialising is fabulous and we need to embrace all the joy we can get.
1. THE JACKET I love a great jacket! I have lots of them in my wardrobe that transcend any trend and enhance any outfit I am wearing. You can throw a blazer over a shirt or statement top, pair with leather trousers or leggings to make your outfit smarter or alternatively, pair down an all over sequin dress or satin slip dress with a leather biker jacket. I like the way a jacket can change any outfit and it will always make you look polished.
2. THE JUMPSUIT Jumpsuits have been my party-wear favourite for the past couple of years and it doesn’t look like the trend is slowing down. So if you haven’t ‘jumped in’ head first and invested in one yet, now is the time to do it, as you will get loads of wear out of it this party season. Jumpsuits are universally flattering and I guarantee you’ll find one to suit your body shape. 88 NOVEMBER 2021

3. THE SHAPEWEAR
Always key but often forgotten about until a last minute panic hits whether you have the ‘right’ bra for that little black dress or the right knickers for those form fitting trousers. I advise clients to look at all-in-one bodies, brand Heist and Marks and Spencer do some great options that can support your posture, flatten your stomach and are comfortable enough that you won’t know you are wearing one.
4. THE ACCESSORIES A great pair of heels, a fab clutch bag and a bit of sparkle round your neck never goes out of style! Clutch bags really help ‘finish off ’ an outfit and I think you can be as daring as you want with adding that extra pop of colour to contrast your outfit. I love spicing up my outfits with my leopard print heels or a sparkly pair of mules. A new necklace or statement earrings is a very inexpensive way of updating your outfits. nina@edits-styling.com / edits-styling.com

What’s the best serum for your skin type?
Finding the right super-powered serum can make all the difference, says Katie Wright.
ANEW RENEWAL PROTINOL POWER SERUM, £16, AVAILABLE FROM AVON
RESURFACING SERUM, £64, AVAILABLE FROM AURELIA LONDON
A
host of exciting new launches is putting serums in the spotlight, but what if you’ve yet to add this underrated essential to your beauty routine? We asked skincare experts for their advice on how to find the best serum for your skin…
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING A SKINCARE SERUM? “A serum delivers a high concentration of an active skincare ingredient to the skin – the nature of the active will depend on the skincare concern,” says Dr Mary Sommerlad, consultant dermatologist for Vichy, which is why it’s so important to find the product that’s best suited to your needs. Lighter in texture than moisturisers or creams, serums are “quickly absorbed into the skin, and are therefore a fantastic way to layer products,” says dermatologist Dr Sharon Wong, who is currently working with Philips. “Some serums will combine several actives to target different skin issues simultaneously. This approach of pared back skincare, delivering only what is needed in a personalised and minimalistic way, otherwise known as ‘skinimalism’, has become an increasingly popular and sensible trend in skincare.” 90 NOVEMBER 2021
HOW SHOULD SERUM BE APPLIED? “As serums tend to be lightweight and crammed full of actives they are best applied onto clean, slightly damp skin after a cleanser but before moisturiser,” says Dr Sommerlad. Dr Wong says: “Anti-ageing serums containing photosensitising retinols should be applied in the evening,” and followed with SPF 30 or above the next morning. “Generally speaking, if the serum is for antioxidant purposes, this should be used during the day.”
Julian Boaitey, founder of Yendy
BLISS GLOW & HYDRATE DAY HYALURONIC SERUM, £19.99, AVAILABLE FROM BOOTS
Mature skin In terms of the best serum ingredients for mature skin, Dr Wong says: “The effect of retinols (Vitamin A derivatives) on improving collagen production, evening out skin tone and improving cell turnover is well established, and has sealed its status as the ultimate active to include in any antiageing routine.” She also recommends Vitamin C for it’s antioxidant effects and as “an important cofactor in collagen production. Mature skin tends to be on the drier side and retaining moisture becomes more challenging, so including hyaluronic acid in the serum is recommended, but it can also help to offset any dryness caused by the retinol.”
Darker skin tones For brown and black skin tones – types five and six on the Fitzpatrick scale – an oil-based serum is ideal.“To best protect, nourish and treat darker skin tones, it’s really important to use a serum that’s rich in antioxidants,” says Julian Boaitey, founder of Yendy. “Baobab seed
oil boasts the highest antioxidant content of all its superfood friends, increasing collagen production in the skin, whilst lightening dark spots and locking in moisture.” He also recommends marula oil for “acne-induced hyperpigmentation, due to the natural Vitamin C that’s in it” and rosehip for “evening out the skin tone, whilst also increasing the skin’s natural elasticity.”
Oily “For oily skin, look for serums that are hydrating without being too heavy,” says Dr Sommerlad. Hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture into the skin is “unlikely to clog pores or leave a greasy residue. It’s effective in keeping skin well hydrated.”
VICHY MINÉRAL 89 HYALURONIC ACID HYDRATION BOOSTER SERUM, £18.75 (WAS £25), AVAILABLE FROM BOOTS
Sensitive If your skin reacts to active ingredients, Dr Sommerlad recommends “serums that are unlikely to trigger the skin, but instead, are able to hydrate it.” Hyaluronic acid is more gentle than it sounds, especially when part of a lightweight formula.
Dr Mary Sommerlad, consultant dermatologist for Vichy
ERBORIAN YUZA SUPER SERUM, £46, AVAILABLE FROM SPACE NK
Dry
Dr Wong is also a fan of hyaluronic acid for dry skin, calling it “the key ingredient to quench thirsty skin. As a highly-effective humectant, it has the ability to trap and retain water molecules to significantly boost skin hydration.”
Combination “Combination skin can experience dullness in some areas and oiliness in others – look for serums which are multitasking,” says Dr Sommerlad, and Vitamin C, which has “antioxidant benefits, as well as the ability to help with pigmentation issues.”
HYDRANET BI-PHASE CELL RENEWAL SERUM, £30, AVAILABLE FROM SKINSENSE
Acne prone
Dermatologist Dr Sharon Wong
Chemical exfoliation is essential for helping to keep pores clear and prevent spots from forming, which means “hydroxy acids such as salicylic acid, lactic and glycolic acid,” says Dr Wong. Other key ingredients to look out for are antiinflammatory actives such as niacinamide, which helps to regulate sebum production, and Vitamin C to reduce associated post acne scarring and pigmentation.”

Discover Our A/W Style Staples By Anna Howell, Chaplins’ Interiors Editor
W
e have a tendency to go looking for peace in far-flung places. And while the novelty of travel can offer a temporary balm for tired souls, this season, we’d like to locate serenity a little closer to home. Specifically, in the objects and people we invite in. It’s why within this edit, you’ll find no flashy tricks. Just down-to-earth, honest designs that are a joy to sink into. Together, they explore simple shapes, soft wools and craft in all its kaleidoscopic forms. A trifecta that we find helps us stay grounded; no matter what the outside world has in store.
Pews To Perch On There’s something reverent about this season’s crop of lounge chairs. While they vary in style and finish, all sit curiously low to the ground — a meditative pose that encourages us to indulge in moments of quiet. Beautifully hewn and deliciously chunky, their legs wind upwards like ancient roots, an elegant and soothing homage to the world beneath our feet. Lovers of Scandinavian design will be titillated by the Brasilia Lounge Chair by Menu — an indulgent new lounger that seeks to bridge the gap between Nordic craftsmanship and Brazilian modernism. 96 NOVEMBER 2021
Chests To Treasure For a long time, cabinets were presumed passé; one of the first victims to fall to the context of smaller living spaces. Of late, however, there’s been a revival of interest in these hard working styles as beautiful objets d’art in their own right. The most hotly anticipated launch this month comes from Gubi, with the debut of their new Private collection by Space Copenhagen. Through

a series of classic designs, the studio seeks to play with the idea of open and closed space, with styles that double up as striking storage units and elegant room dividers.
Light meanwhile, designer Marcel Wanders has opted for elegant cornicing — a fantasy of flowers, berries and leaves that lend contemporary homes the glory of a Georgian ceiling.
Styles To Feast On
Slip Into Flow
The last two years have been a period of much soul-searching, with many designers looking backwards for guidance and inspiration. It should perhaps come as no surprise, then, that in 2022, our creative wells will be replenished by the readoption of ancient arts and crafts, each of which promises to write evocative interior stories. In our dining rooms this looks like beautiful inlaid surfaces, unhurried joinery and a commitment to simpler materials. Underwriting it all is a sense of going back to one’s roots. Of finding out what made us love design in the first place. And selecting styles that make us feel connected to a wider legacy of craft and creativity.
Czech psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi famously described a flow state as a feeling of complete absorption and contentment — the sweet spot where the chatter of the mind lulls as we dedicate ourselves entirely to the task at hand. Our ability to slip into such states is intricately correlated to the amount of stretch and satisfaction we feel in our daily lives and is a concept we’ve been thinking about a lot late lately at Chaplins. While the conditions for flow will look slightly different for everyone, there are a couple of hard and fast rules that can be applied. First, you’ll need a dedicated spot to get down to business. And while the end of the dining table will do, a PETITE DESK is better. The second is all about visual comfort. An idea that starts with good task lighting and ends with more abstract ideas like greenery, biophilic design and organisation. Remember, distraction is the enemy of flow. So cultivating a space in which you can stow away gadgets and amp up your exposure to natural elements is an important step to creating a space that lets you find deep, rewarding focus.

Origin Pools A new way of living?
S
ince the beginning of the pandemic we’ve seen huge shifts in global and national markets, the real estate market arguably saw the biggest surge as people began to adapt to a new way of living and lockdown demand soared. A recent study by Savills and Money.co.uk revealed the search volume for houses with pools for sale increased by 49% and has consistently appeared as a key property feature on Savills website since the beginning of Covid-19. This makes home swimming pools one of the most desirable property features homebuyers find important when searching for a new home in the UK. The period of the pandemic also saw an increase in people taking a renewed interest in exercise and finding new ways to keep healthy.
98 NOVEMBER 2021
With health clubs and communal swimming pools being closed for so long, swimming became the top of the exercise wish list and with its multiple physical and mental health benefits it’s easy to see why. As outside space became precious commodity and home improvement consumed the nation, the demand for at home, indoor swimming pools grew. With Origin, the dream of having your own private swimming pool can become a reality. Their award winning designs have been delivered by a long-serving team of craftsmen and experts including architects, designers and engineers, many of whom have been with Origin from the start. Throughout their years in business, Origin have successfully completed thousands of pools and pool houses to a wide range of specifications, tailoring each one to fit the clients wants and

needs. Whether for exercise and wellness or fun, an indoor swimming pool from Origin will have you swimming all year, even when autumn and winter are around the corner, it will be summer all year long. Their experienced team of experts can also talk you through ways your swimming pool can be ecofriendly and run on renewable energy. Origin do it all, owning a swimming pool has never been easier nor has there been a better time. They manage the entire installation process from initial design to completion and beyond, eliminating the need for you to employ and manage separate companies for each element of the build and removing the potential risks and headache of liaising between separate trades. Origin take care of everything and keep you informed so you can relax, secure in the knowledge that their experts will all be working together to the same brief from the start.

Why you should choose a specialist for your new mobility bathroom
I
f it’s time to update your bathroom so that it’s safer and easier to use, a specialist mobility bathroom company will answer your questions and provide advice. Here are some of the major benefits of choosing an expert rather than a general bathroom company or plumber.
A bathroom designed just for you A mobility bathroom specialist will assess the specific needs of all bathroom users. Whether you have reduced mobility because of arthritis or if you use a walking frame, a mobility bathroom expert will tailor the bathroom design accordingly to produce the safest solution.
Specialist, high-quality products Installing a low-level shower tray alone does not mean that your bathroom is now adapted to your needs. An expert will consider all aspects of the environment including the flooring, walling, sanitaryware and brassware and recommend which products will be best for you.
With you from design to completion A true mobility bathing expert will be there from the initial meeting to discuss your requirements, to ordering and supplying the products that will make your life easier, to the expert installation. They will

take the stress out of the process by managing everything for you, rather than you having to deal with multiple tradespeople.
Try before you buy A specialist will provide the opportunity to look at - and even try out - the products they recommend to you, rather than just showing you pictures in a brochure. For example, you could see if a walk-in bath will be suitable for you by making sure you can access through the door easily.
THE DETAILS You can view a range of mobility bathrooms at the Bathing Mobility Advisory Service (BMAS) showroom. A free, no-obligation design and quote service is available in the comfort of your own home. BMAS 67 Hermitage Road, Hitchin SG5 1DB 01462 889 097 bathingmobility.co.uk

Eternal cosiness of Autumn: ORANGE IN BEDROOMS L ove the season of pumpkin spice, apple pies and all things nice? Let your bedroom interior reflect that feeling.
Bask in the warmth of orange
You can create a cozy and relaxing atmosphere with warmer orange tones paired with greys and whites. Use warm grey tones to create a subtle look or cooler undertones for a more contrasting look. Contemporary or modern bedrooms can make excellent use of this combination.
Sophisticated Pastels A minimalist bedroom can use soft orange tones to add a graceful and elegant aspect to it. As the English father of minimalism John Pawson said, “it is not so much empty as calm”. Pastel shades of orange can also be combined with beige and off whites for a serene environment.
Level it up with black Ofcourse, we have to rope in black to add more definition in the bedroom with soft orange. One of the easiest ways to use black to add contrast to the soft or pastel orange interior is through a metal bed. 104 NOVEMBER 2021

How to create a gallery wall
2. Find a common theme or colour
A
gallery wall is a wonderful way to add interest and personality to a space. Never underestimate the power of art to set the tone and energy in any room. Sometimes choosing a single piece of wall art just isn’t possible - making a gallery wall the perfect soution. Here are Mineheart’s top 5 tips to create a high impact, cohesive gallery display for your interior.
1. Choose your biggest artwork first Find a large piece of art that you love, and use that to set the tone and atmosphere for your art display. Mineheart’s collection of designer wall art come in a range of sizes, making it easy to select the right size for your space. 106 NOVEMBER 2021
Many people find that their gallery wall works best with a little order and consistency. You might choose a series of water images, for example, or perhaps animals or scenes. You may also want to theme the wall around a certain colour or set of colours that match your decor.
3. Mix up your frames The most effective gallery walls mix up the frame types and sizes of artworks so that the display is a little haphazard. Many of our wall art designs come with a series of frame options to suit your space.
4. Choose portrait and landscape Choosing all portrait-orientation art can look a little too contrived, so make sure you have a mix of orientations to suit the space and keep things a little unpredictable.
“The most effective gallery walls mix up the frame types and sizes of artworks so that the display is a little haphazard”
“Place your largest piece to the left or right of centre, and fit the other artworks around it”
5. Plan the space Once you have collected all the pieces you want to display on your gallery wall, experiment with the layout. Measure your chosen wall space and plot out the dimensions on the floor using masking tape. Place your largest piece to the left or right of centre, and fit the other artworks around it, giving each one adequate space. Far easier than trying to do it on the wall!
The idea behind Mineheart is to create a playground for creativity and adventure, where fantasy meets design, and dreams meet industry. We try to inject a sense of wonder into everyday objects and the spaces around us, telling stories and creating objects that are far from ordinary, they must be extraordinary in order to meaningfully exist. Within the Mineheart wonderland, everyday objects that include wallpaper, wall art, lighting furniture and home accessories, are more than just functional, they contain stories, love, art and poetry. mineheart.com NOVEMBER 2021 107

Marry this plush chair with dark wood paneling, nature inspired decor and rustic finishes and watch as your space transforms into a Cabincore dream. At its very centre, cabincore is all about creating a sense of tranquillity and comfort within a space as we ease into the colder months. Exposed brick and distressed wood features work to create a rustic, unfinished look that accentuates the cosiness of softer textures within the room, such as the plush velvet of this Sherwood Chaise Sofa. Available in a range of fabrics and leathers, this sofa provides unparalleled comfort with its soft foam seats and feather filled back cushions, making it the perfect sofa to curl up and relax on. If you’re short on space, perhaps opt for one of the Exmouth or Kingston loveseats – though smaller in size, these petite additions don’t compromise on comfort and will tie the room together seamlessly. With brown hues being the main colour scheme of the Cabincore movement, the Sloane Chair in Leather would be ideal if you wanted to add a hint of this trend without committing to it fully. ritish design house Bobo1325, renowned for its maximalist wallpaper designs, has launched a new range of luxury throws. The collection, designed by Bobo1325 founder Beth Travers, shares the same bold styling as her wallpaper designs and brings together whimsical illustrations, bright colours and intricate detailing. Some feature standout elements from her wallpaper designs, while others have been designed exclusively for the throw collection. And as with all Beth’s designs, there is a story behind each one. Beth said: “I love the versatility of throws when it comes to interior styling. From adding tactile textures to sofas and an additional layer of warmth in the master bedroom to creating a statement piece of wall art, throws can add both a practical and aesthetic touch to interior styling. “Wallpapers have been at the core of my brand since its inception, however, I love working with fabric so a throw collection seemed like the most logical next step in my interiors journey. “These throws are a completely different scale to my wallpaper and I loved re-imagining and reworking my designs to work at this size.
