n 2014, Carl Russell and Co Gunmakers opened its doors for the first time, based in the Stable Yard on the picturesque Hatfield Park Estate in Hertfordshire. Specialising in English shotguns, Carl Russell and Co pride themselves on offering best quality shotguns for sale alongside undertaking servicing and renovation projects in the workshop.

Belgravia’s Eccleston Yards will host a free, chromotherapy-inspired light installation from 28 November – 11 January Created by artists Squidsoup, ‘Wave’ will suspend 500 individual lit orbs with 500 individual voices in a range of colours

his Christmas, Eccleston Yards – the hub for independent retail, wellbeing and coworking developed by Grosvenor Britain & Ireland (‘Grosvenor’) – will illuminate its courtyard with a multi-sensory light installation, titled ‘Wave’. The installation will debut at the London destination from 28 November - 11 January this year, and has been created by internationally renowned artists, Squidsoup.

‘Wave’ will offer visitors an interactive light and voice experience that explores the wonders of colourful illuminations, taking inspiration from the ancient healing concept of Chromotherapy: the science of using the powers of light and colour to balance energy in the body and mind.

With 500 individually suspended orbs, each with a unique voice, ‘Wave’ is an all-encompassing, immersive experience that will light up Eccleston Yards and contribute to a calming energy balance for the visitor – synonymous with the wellbeing ethos of Eccleston Yards.

Visitors will find themselves entranced as they walk through the installation, listening to evolving hypnotic harmonies created by the orbs. The vibrations projected by the different orbs will energise the body (orange), stimulate happiness (yellow) and calm the heart rate (blue).

New faces of global Sweaty BettY advertising campaign are from St Albans!

aomi Czuba and JoJo Godfrey are two of seven women picked from around the country to represent Sweaty Betty for the launch of its new #IAmASweatyBetty September collection.

They can be seen donning the company’s outfits and dancing on screens in the chain’s shops around the world.

As the owner of Naomi Czuba Dance, 47-year-old Naomi was nominated for the campaign by her adult students.

“I am 48 now but it took me back and made me feel like I’ve still got it.”

She said: “I had never done anything like that before. I am used to teaching classes and I am used to being on film dancing, but modelling that is totally out of my comfort zone.

“It was an amazing experience being part of a whole creative process.

“I was nervous but it was extremely empowering and the thing about it was they allowed us to be who we are. We didn’t have to be models - they wanted it to be as real as possible.”

The 48-year-old bagged this gig after she submitted a video of her hiphop dancing She said: “I was really happy and grateful [to be picked]. The ladies I worked with, that I have never met before, they were really lovely and it was empowering working with such a diverse group of women.”

The photo and filming shoots took place back in March this year, but the advertising campaign was launched this month.

JoJo, who grew up in St Albans and attended Francis Bacon School, added: “It was amazing, I absolutely loved it.

A

t Queenswood we value creativity enormously. Beyond the sheer satisfaction of self-expression, a creative education offers so many benefits to pupils. Research has concluded that regular and sustained participation in musical activities stimulates the brain to form new neural networks, and leads to better working memory (vital for mental arithmetic and reading comprehension), improved linguistic ability, and improvements in attention span, emotional resilience, empathy and self-confidence.

Likewise, studying drama and dance helps young people to improvise, to think laterally, and to become adaptable problem-solvers. Drama students grow into confident and articulate public speakers, while working collaboratively on performance projects encourages engagement with others’ viewpoints, and helps to develop qualities such as compassion and tolerance. These are skills and qualities that will be highly prized by the employers of the future.

During their time at Queenswood, at least two-thirds of all pupils take instrumental or vocal lessons, with some specialising in two or more instruments. Classical training in the traditional orchestral and keyboard instruments is highly popular, but girls can also choose to study music theatre, jazz piano or even DJ-ing. We put on around 30 concerts a year, both in our own concert hall and Chapel and at nationally and internationally renowned venues such as the Ritz, the Barbican, the Cattedrale di San Zeno in Pistoia and St Mark’s English Church, Florence.

Similarly, over half the school participates in Speech and Drama lessons, working towards highly respected LAMDA qualifications, while many girls study ballet or join our contemporary dance clubs, where they can master aerial hoops and silks or cheerleading. With up to eight productions a 60 NOVEMBER 2019

year staged in our two theatre spaces, there is no shortage of opportunities for girls to build their confidence and self-esteem through performance.

Crucially, we also provide an hour of timetabled teaching in both Music and Drama to every girl in Years 7 to 9, and Dance, Music and Drama are popular options at GCSE and A-Level. At a time when curriculum time for these subjects is being squeezed nationally, and no provision for the arts is made in the Department for Education’s EBacc (the set of eight recommended GCSE subjects), our pupils are very fortunate to enjoy the advantages of an education that values creativity, originality and resourcefulness. By adopting a face to face approach in our sessions, VAKS are continuously helping to build each child’s ability to communicate and share, with one of the main focuses at VAKS being on building children’s confidence. This means students challenge each other to step out of their comfort zone by answering questions and pushing out ideas, experimenting with language and communication which they may not necessarily do in the classroom.

worked best were chamomile flowers, garden mint, scented rose, and rosemary.”

CHELSEA PENSIONERS INSPECT THE RANKS OF BRITAIN’S FRESHEST CHRISTMAS TREES

A

group of Chelsea Pensioners – the retired army veterans who live at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, famous for their scarlet uniforms – had a surprise tour of duty at Yattendon Estates in Berkshire for the Christmas trees that will soon be raising money for the historic institution..

The trip was organised by Capital Christmas Trees, who will be providing freshly harvested trees directly from the estate to be sold in the Royal Hospital’s elegant South Grounds.

Home of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show on the Embankment, The Royal Hospital will offer a superb selection of fresh trees giving London families the chance to pick out their own special tree and know that it’s as fresh as if they had travelled to Yattendon Estates themselves.

This is the first time that the Royal Hospital has sold Christmas trees, and a commission on every sale will help to raise funds for the Grade I listed buildings, which was commissioned by Charles II and designed by Sir Christopher Wren as a permanent home for old soldiers.

The Chelsea Pensioners spent the day as guests of Lord Iliffe, who lives and works at Yattendon Estates. He was a pioneer of the UK Christmas tree industry in the 1970s and has seen the farm operation expand to harvest more than 50,000 trees each year.

Allan McLaren, Acting Head of Fundraising at the Royal Hospital, said: “We would like to thank Capital Christmas Trees and Lord Iliffe for offering our retired soldiers a great day out and a chance to get into the Christmas spirit a little earlier than usual! We are really looking forward to selling these lovely trees and we are sure they will be very popular in Chelsea. The great thing about The Royal Hospital is that there is a wealth of space for people to look at lots of different trees and select the one that’s exactly right for them.”

Hogwarts in the Snow & dinner in the Great Hall

arry Potter fans are invited to discover the filmmaking secrets behind Christmas in the Wizarding World as Warner Bros. Studio Tour London undergoes a magical makeover for Hogwarts in the Snow. From Saturday 16th November – Sunday 26th January 2020, visitors will have the opportunity to see the Harry Potter film series’ most iconic sets decorated for festive scenes.

The Great Hall will be transformed for the Yule Ball, the Gryffindor common room will be dressed for the season and a blanket of filmmaking snow will be meticulously applied to the majestic Hogwarts castle model.

This festive season also sees the return of the highly anticipated ‘Dinner in the Great Hall’ events at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London. Each night from 9th-11th December, Harry Potter fans can enjoy drinks and canapes before sitting down to a two-course Christmas feast on the truly magical Great Hall set that will be completely transformed for the festive season. Dessert will be served on Platform 9 ¾ next to the original Hogwarts Express locomotive and guests will be free to explore the Studio Tour exclusively after hours.

The festive transformation will begin in the Great Hall, where the stage will again be decorated as it was for the iconic Yule Ball. As seen in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the celebration of the Triwizard Tournament saw every detail of the Great Hall covered in shimmering silver, dripping icicles and sparkling snow. Visitors to the Studio Tour will get a taster of this incredible set dress as the top section of the Great Hall will be transformed with snow-covered Christmas trees, icicles and an orchestra of magical instruments that have been painted by the Prop-Making Department to match the silver of the Yule Ball.

In addition to the Yule Ball decoration, The Great Hall will be lined with Christmas trees and the long dining tables will be dressed as they were for seasonal feasts at Hogwarts with prop versions of roast turkeys, hams studded with cherries and even

As part of the Hogwarts in the Snow feature, many of the iconic sets housed at the Studio Tour will receive a festive makeover. The Gryffindor Common Room and Boys’ Dormitory will be decorated with the original props including handmade Christmas cards, some of which were created by the cast members during production.

Fireplaces throughout the Studio Tour (including those in the Leaky Cauldron and Great Hall) will be ‘lit’ with special effects fire, created by John Richardson and the SFX team using a combination of water vapour and lighting effects.

The Hogwarts castle model will be transformed with a layer of filmmaking snow. During filming, a member of the crew climbed aboard an elevated work platform and sprinkled the ‘snow’ mixture of granulated paper and grains of salt onto the model by hand with a sieve – like dusting sugar onto a cake. The same process takes place at the Studio Tour every festive season. Visitors will even be able to touch samples of the different types of ‘snow’ used during production, each selected for its ability to float like falling snow, crunch under foot or glisten in the light like ice.

Hogwarts in the Snow will run from Saturday 16th November – Sunday 26th January 2020.

Sleep: one of the key pillars for good health

reathing, drinking, sleeping, eating. If we don’t do these things, we will inevitably suffer an emotional and cognitive close down prior to impending death. So, why is it that many of us breathe, drink and eat, but deny ourselves the correct amount of sleep?

In today’s fast paced and psychologically congested world, fatigue is increasingly becoming more commonplace. Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, who is a sleep psychologist and author of The Little Book of Sleep, feels that, “We have become restless as a society – and that places more demands on us when we get into bed at night. We have lost the rituals and practises that gave us little respites during the day…

Now, any window like that will be filled by looking at your phone, answering some emails, sorting out your Amazon account.”

Lots of us are perpetually rushing. Instead, we should stop and take time-out. If we lose the ability to ease up it will increasingly become more difficult for us to slow down and sleep.

Stress, anxiety, and low mood, feed poor sleep and poor sleep feeds stress, anxiety and low mood. “If you are suffering from poor sleep, that will make your stress levels higher,” says Dr Guy Leschziner, a neurologist and the author of The Nocturnal Brain. “Getting as much sleep as possible when you’re feeling overwhelmed will help to manage your stress.”

Sleep authority for the NHS, Dr Sophie Bostock clarifies: “Our understanding of sleep is [akin to] where we were on our thinking around diet and exercise about 30 years ago. People loosely know it’s

a good thing but are slowly starting to realise just how important.”

So, what to do?

You could try: • Eating more natural food and consuming less in the evening.

• Exercising and serious thinking in the day rather than the evening.

• Sleeping in a cool bedroom.

• Drinking no coffee after noon.

• Turning off all screens half an hour before bed.

Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. If you get a poor night’s sleep, still get up at your normal time, and stay up until your regular bedtime. Taking naps interferes with, and upsets, your sleep drive.

If you wake in the middle of the night then reading a book (not a screen) that makes you feel happy and relaxed, will hopefully make you concentrate just enough to remove worries, but not enough to prevent you dropping off.

Mindfulness breathing or recorded meditation can also remove unwanted thoughts bombarding your mind and jolting you into wakefulness.

Be more mindful and meditate saying, “I don’t need to sleep tonight and if I don’t, I’ll surely sleep tomorrow.” This is a sort of reverse psychology, but it supports the theory that eventually you get the sleep you need.

Say ‘no’ to a nightcap.

Finally, the big change - and this is the long-term resolution that would usually take time and help from a professional - strive for a life balance that reduces low mood, stress and anxiety.

Longer lasting Autumn Colour Redhead or brunette? Claire Spreadbury reveals how to make your colour last longer this season.

O

h, how we love autumn. The hues of the season are so stylish, and they suit almost everybody. Much like the colours on the catwalk, hair is becoming warmer and more lustrous, too.

But if you opt for a full head of gorgeously-rich red or deep chocolate, how can you ensure your colour lasts? We asked the experts for their top tips...

Shampoo with care “When your hair is freshly coloured, avoid shampooing for 72 hours to allow the cuticle to recover, as this will prevent initial fading,” says celebrity stylist and colourist Edward James. “If you have a very oily scalp, consider using a cowash and ditch the shampoo at least a couple of times a week. Shampoos cleanse hair more and result in colour molecules being cleansed away.

You could also consider getting a water softener, as this will prevent a build up of minerals from dulling your hair. And avoid very hot water, as this will speed up colour fade.”

Go ionic “In the colder autumn months, we tend to blast our hair dry more frequently than letting it air dry, which will increase colour fade; brunettes will tend to go more brassy; blondes more yellow and reds and coppers more dull,” continues James.

“Try investing in an ionic hairdryer, which emits negatively-charged ions that break down water molecules faster, and allow your hair to more easily absorb moisture. The ions also flatten the hair cuticle which adds shine, but also prevents your colour from fading over time.”

Banish sulphates “Use a sulphate-free colour shampoo and conditioner,” advises colour specialist Christel Lundqvist, founder and director of Stil Salon. “It seems like a simple aftercare tip, but it’s crucial to be able to prolong vibrant coloured hair, as every time you wash your hair, colour will fade.

The gentle shampoo will cleanse the hair with a minimum fade effect and the conditioner will seal the cuticle locking pigments in.”

Refresh more and dryshampoo less “Lengthen times between shampooing to keep your hair looking vivid for longer,” says James.

“Although dry shampoo is still a massive life saver for many, it tends to have the downside of making hair feel drier, as it essentially absorbs oil and creates more friction between hair strands - with the result being ‘fresher’ looking hair that is also more dehydrated. Using a scalp and hair reviver,

rather than a dry shampoo, is the way to go, particularly if you want to reduce how much you wash your hair to prevent colour fade. A hair and scalp refresher revives and refreshes second-day styles and also reduces frizz.

“Aveda Rinseless Refresh, £24, is a new product which helps tame frizz. Micellar technology refreshes the scalp and it’s very lightweight, so perfect for finer hair. Oribe also has Cote d’Azur Hair Refresher, which is designed to refresh second-day hair by neutralising odour and adding condition (£22, SpaceNK.com).”

Give your colour a boost Keeping hair vibrant when it may be damaged from summer sun can be a challenge says Tom Smith, colour director at Billi Currie: “The condition of the hair must be restored in order for the colour molecules to remain stable. A great way of keeping your autumnal tones ‘salon fresh’ while conditioning your hair at the same time, is a custom-mixed pigmented conditioner. Evo Fab Pro have a fantastic system that allows me to personalise the pigment mix to any shade. You can use this in place of your regular conditioner at home every time you wash your hair (or every few washes as needed), just leave it on for a minimum of three minutes and it will leave your hair soft and super-shiny, while topping up the pigments that fade away.”

Overcome dehydration from central heating “Just like our skin, hair becomes dehydrated and this is made worse with artificial central heating,” notes James. “To overcome the drying effects, it’s worth using a weekly hair treatment on your hair.

James adds: “In addition to treatments, make sure you seal your hair in the autumn. Use a couple of drops of hair oil or a leave-in moisture treatment. damaged by heat, it won’t be able to hold on to the colour naturally, due to the structure and cuticle being damaged, so colour will fade very quickly.

Reduce heat styling “Minimal styling and heat usage will also help prolong vivid colour,” says Lundqvist. “Heated equipment, like tongs and hairdryers, can create colour fade due to over-styling. If the hair gets NOVEMBER 2019 113

urveying the AW19 backstage beauty trends, when it comes to nails, there were some bonkers but brilliant - designs on show.

From curved, two-inch talons at Rick Owens to shiny golden fingertips at Lanvin, these lavish creations are not exactly ideal if you need to use your phone, rummage in your bag or make it through the day without harming yourself or others.

But at the other end of the spectrum, the catwalk nail gurus have given us some beautifully wearable options for autumn/winter, as have the new-season nail polish collections.

Classic reds The mani equivalent of a scarlet lip, shiny red nails never go out of style. At Ashley Williams, manicurist Michelle Class made the case for a slightly longer nail length with rounded tips and a ‘true red’ hue, while at Oscar de la Renta, neatly filed nails were painted blood red.

Sounds like this fits in the ‘not very wearable’ category? To make it both pretty and practical, instead of using beads, paint dots with a pearlescent polish instead.

Established in 2003, the Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Company was setup on a simple ethos of “hand crafted, quality iron beds, guaranteed to last a lifetime”.

In 2003 Amanda Oldfield, purchased two iron beds from a high street retailer, for her two teenage sons. Disappointed with the overall quality, Amanda took I upon herself, with assistance from husband Stephen, to find a local iron fabricator and have two beds made. Impressed with the exceptional quality, the Wrought Iron and Brass Bed Company was born.

Hand crafted within their own workshop, on the Royal Sandringham Estate. Their range of iron wrought iron and brass beds, are constructed using traditional techniques and finished with authentic brass finishing’s. So, their beds shall beautifully age over time and recreate that traditional, nostalgic iron bed look. But don’t be fooled by their name, as they also loving hand craft beds of the contemporary kind. Featuring a range, a of beds in Nickel, Satin Brass and now Copper. Brining an opulent and luxurious twist, to the all-time traditional classic.

From the raw wrought iron arriving one side of their workshop and skilfully hand-crafted beds, leaving from the other. This family run company, have truly become the experts in hand crafted wrought iron and brass beds. So much so, they are the only iron bed manufacturer, recognised by The Guild of Master Craftsmen. A well distinguished and prestigious stamp of quality, which truly shows how far they have come.
