he stylish folk of Hertfordshire were out in their masses as the Nave of StAlbans Cathedral was transformed into the longest indoor Catwalk in the country for the pinnacle of St Albans Fashion Week.

Television presenter, writer, journalist, talk show host, columnist and Arsenal football fan Piers Morgan would certainly make an interesting and entertaining guest at any dinner party. On Thursday 26 November he will be at Champneys in Tring sharing anecdotes of his career and his love of Arsenal at an exclusive dinner in aid of Willow.

Situated in the historic market town of Hitchin, Gatwards was established in 1760 and is one of the oldest jewellers in the UK still in the same family.

CALENDAR 1 december Willow Carol Concert Join Willow Life Presidents Bob and Megs Wilson, on Tuesday 1 December at 7.30pm for an unforgettable festive evening at the charity’s Willow Carol Concert at The Cathedral, St Albans. The evening will include musical performances from the spectacular Hertfordshire Chorus, the Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School choir and of course will provide the opportunity to sing some classic carols. There will be readings by charity beneficiaries and local dignitaries, followed by mulled wine and mince pies. Join us on Sunday 8 December 2015 to take part in our festive fundraiser and support Rennie Grove Hospice Care. Once again, hundreds of Santas and children in reindeer antlers will meet at Waterend Barn, St Albans, before taking part in their chosen run around the city. The 5km Jingle Bell Jog is a spectacular sight where hundreds of adults and children over 10 years old dress in bright red Santa suits and race around St Albans. The 1.5km Reindeer Run is open to all ages and will see eager younger runners don reindeer antlers and flashing red noses to run the shorter route, accompanied by their parents and often grandparents too. Fashion Festivities finish with a bang

The nave lends itself to the catwalk perfectly, and the show’s vibrant, professional style makes for a great atmosphere in such a spectacular and prestigious setting. As we celebrate the 900th birthday of the Norman abbey this year, it’s a fantastic way to show that you’re never too old to look good!

With not one, but two, sell out catwalk shows this year at the Cathedral, the fashion festivities finished on a real high. Guests were treated to a parade of the very best Autumn/ Winter fashion on our local high street, teamed with a breathtaking bridal sequence and a Trend show finale. A blend of international brands and local independents came together to showcase all that is great about retail and beauty in St Albans. Collections from student and graduate designers were also on show across both nights.

Saturday on the 31st October. People can’t wait to shop the looks that they have seen! Our show is only as good as our retailers and designers, they are the real stars of the show,’ says Director, Ellena Ophira. Colour sponsors makeup brand, Bare Minerals, dusted the models with the requisite glamour, whilst local hair retailers ensured that everyone looked their very best.

Volunteer models, a blend of women and men of all ages, shapes and sizes strutted their stuff like pros to the glee and eager anticipation of the audience on both nights. Deryane Tadd, owner of Multi Award Winning Boutique, The Dressing Room said, ‘ St Albans Fashion Week 2015 was the best yet with lots of buzz, excitement and energy surrounding the week And the catwalk show in particular. The catwalk show was a fantastic success with many of our looks selling out in record time on Super Shopping Saturday. The ‘Shop the Catwalk’ pop up shop was a fantastic addition to the evening, people went wild shopping at our stand and were really buzzing after the show. A huge thank you to Ellie and her team for working so hard to pull this all together.’

Each year the event gets bigger and bigger and this year it caught the attention of the BBC, with the SAFW team and the Cathedral being filmed on the catwalk by a BBC film crew only moments before the doors opened for the show. ‘ It really is an honour and privilege to run St Albans Fashion Week, we feel very lucky to work with so many wonderful people throughout the year and we can’t wait to start planning 2016. Peter Rabbit™ Adventure Playground plans unveiled

W

illows Activity Farm in St.Albans, Hertfordshire, has unveiled the construction plans for its new Peter Rabbit themed play area, due to open in April 2016. The area, to be named the ‘Peter Rabbit™ Adventure Playground’ will be 1,400 square metres in size and aims to encourage active, imaginative and wholesome play for children.

It will have ten activities themed around the worldfamous and much-loved Peter Rabbit characters, including the Mrs Tiggy-Winkle Kitchen, a Jeremy Fisher Musical Pond and Benjamin Bunny Treetop Adventure.

The new play attraction will open to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter, author of the original books.

elevision presenter, writer, journalist, talk show host, columnist and Arsenal football fan Piers Morgan would certainly make an interesting and entertaining guest at any dinner party. On Thursday 26 November he will be at Champneys in Tring sharing anecdotes of his career and his love of Arsenal at an exclusive dinner in aid of Willow.

In the luxurious setting of Champneys, Piers will become the interviewee for one night only, with actor and presenter Tom Watt asking the questions. They will be joined by well known individuals from screen and sport to include Bob Wilson OBE. Willow is the only national charity working with seriously ill young adults aged 16 to 40 to fulfil uplifting and unforgettable Special Days. Founded by former Arsenal goalkeeper and TV presenter, Bob Wilson and his wife, Megs, Willow is a lasting memorial to their daughter, Anna, who died of cancer aged 31. Anna’s love of life and the enriching experiences of her own Special Days were the charity’s inspiration.

Here, Piers provides a taste of what he has to say and why he’s supporting Willow: Who has been your most inspiring interviewee and why?

I loved the Dalai Lama. He doesn’t drink, smoke, take drugs, have sex, watch TV, go to the movies, or even listen to music. Just reads and meditates. Never met a happier man!

Who has surprised you the most and why?

John Lydon, who I interviewed for Life Stories recently, was far more intelligent, thoughtful and self-aware than I imagined a former Sex Pistol would be.

If you could choose anyone to interview (dead or alive), who would it be and why?

Jack Nicholson hasn’t given any TV interview for over 40 years, which is probably why everyone still loves him. I’d do anything to persuade him. He’s what I call a proper star, huge talent and doesn’t give a damn about how he looks.

You took part in Celebrity Apprentice, would you ever consider taking part in another reality TV show, which one and why?

I get offered ever larger sums to go into the Jungle or strut my stuff on dance shows, but there is literally not

enough money in Fort Knox to get me doing either of those things.

Your love of Arsenal is well recorded. What has been your greatest moment as a fan?

When Arsenal won the League at Spurs in 2004, I ended up in the Spurs boardroom 90 minutes after the final whistle with just my Dad (a Tottenham diehard!), Arsene Wenger and Pat Rice. We all sat and drank a bottle of wine together and I couldn’t have been happier if someone had just told me I’d won the Lottery.

If you could interview any Arsenal player, past or present, who would it be, what would you ask them?

Dennis Bergkamp. I wouldn’t ask him anything, I’d just say thank you.

Why have you chosen to give your time to support Willow?

Bob was Arsenal’s goalkeeper when I first became a fan more than 40 years ago and I even had a poster of him on my bedroom wall. He was a wonderful player and he’s a great guy too. He and his wife Megs have been through unimaginable grief following the loss of their daughter Anna to cancer and rather than let it overwhelm them, they created a charity to help others in similar positions. I have huge admiration for their efforts and am delighted to help them with this fundraising event for such a terrific cause.

How to choose the right

nursery school for your child

M

ost parents begin to think about their child’s education when their child approaches the age of two. There are many options to consider: full-time care at home or daycare nursery, pre-school or playgroup, or attending a nursery school. Each of these options has its merits but when it comes to early education, nursery schools are the obvious choice. Research has shown that children who receive early education get higher GCSEs and are more likely to receive an above-average salary in their future careers.

However, choosing the right nursery school for your child isn’t easy. A school’s aim shouldn’t simply be to care for your child in a safe and comfortable environment. It should also provide carefully selected learning opportunities. It should tailor everything it does around empowering your child to become a confident, independent learner, who becomes ready to face the challenges of primary school.

There are several parameters that should feed into the decision-making process. The quality of the teachers involved; the quality of the indoor and outdoor environments; the opportunities for play, as well as the opportunities to explore and interact with the world. All of these are important factors. But perhaps the central question every parent should be asking is: What is it like for my child in this nursery school?

The answer touches on many aspects of a nursery school: How big is the setting? Is it inviting and welcoming? Does it have good resources that your child will enjoy playing and learning with? Is it bright and spacious? Does it have outdoor spaces? Are staff warm and approachable? Can they “tune in” to children? Are

they knowledgeable about early years learning and can they demonstrate this to you? What is their educational approach? Do they have clear processes in their communication with parents? How do they monitor the quality of the services they are providing?

What impression do you, as a parent, get from the school? Do you feel welcomed? Is your contribution (as your child’s first educator) valued and encouraged? Do you feel the school wants to work in partnership with you to ensure consistency around your child’s learning?

As a parent, finding the right nursery school for your child can be difficult, but when you do find it and you see your child being happy to go to school in the morning, it can be extremely rewarding too. This will be a huge first step for them towards social development and emotional growth, and one of the most important milestones in how they will view learning in the future.

I

hate autumn. It’s the start of cold, dark months ahead, and this year my face has started to protest about the seasonal change too. To banish my new-found dry patches and dull complexion, I head for a Sothys Oxygenating Seasonal Facial. Sufferers can spend half their life dealing with headaches that range in intensity from mild to severe and with side effects like nausea, vomiting and light, sound or smell sensitivity. In short, more existing than living.

The discovery of Botulinum Toxin A (the chemical name for the trade-marked Botox®) was effective in reducing chronic migraine was accidental. People who were receiving Botox® treatment reported a reduction in their symptoms and so a clinical trial was carried out. The results were positive and Botulinum Toxin was licensed to treat chronic migraine in 2010.

How does Botox work on chronic migraine?

Like many drugs Botulinum Toxin in its pure form is poisonous, but in highly diluted form has many beneficial applications. Whilst its ability to immobilise muscles makes it easy to identify how it works for conditions where muscular pain and muscle tension are involved, it’s less obvious how it reduces chronic migraine. It’s believed that the drug inhibits the nervous system in the area treated and reduces the central pain processing system that creates migraine headaches.

However, most patients are only interested in the results – not the science behind it!

Each session involves Botox injections in a number of sites including around the bridge of the nose, temples, forehead and the back of the head, neck and upper back.

This treatment doesn’t also reduce your wrinkles, other than if you’re not constantly frowning with pain, some of your lines will reduce in definition.

The results will start to be noticed after a week or so and the incidences of migraine headaches should reduce over the course of treatment. Most people report a noticeable improvement in the number of days they suffer headaches and the intensity of the pain. Effects typically last about

8-12 weeks. Many patients find that they can reduce their anti-migraine tablets to almost zero as a result.

Shoulder dislocation: tips and treatment

W

hen experiencing the pain of an injury or recurring issue, fast access to high quality specialist treatment is a patient’s number one priority. After a fall this summer Mr Barrie King was treated by Mr Rajeev Sharma at Spire Harpenden Hospital and wanted to share his experience, below he talks about his diagnosis and treatment.

“I was having a lovely day when the accident happened; a group of us had gone to Brighton and we were having a few relaxing drinks at the pub. When it came time to leave I stood up and that’s the last thing I remember. I was told later that I’d fallen down some stairs inside and was taken to the local hospital to be checked over.

“I was diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder which they treated there and then, however I was still struggling with the pain afterwards. I was later told that not only had I dislocated my shoulder but I’d also got a bad fracture and torn rotator cuff.

“My son had previously been treated at Spire Harpenden Hospital and I knew I wanted the best treatment possible, so I decided I wanted to complete my treatment there. I called and spoke with the outpatient booking team who advised that Mr Sharma, an Orthopaedic Consultant was available that Saturday for an appointment. I was so pleased it was so soon.

“Mr Sharma is a brilliant surgeon and a great man, I was lucky to be treated by him. Everything was so quick and straightforward; I had my first appointment on 27th June and was in for my surgery on the 6th July. I was told it would be six weeks in a sling but Mr Sharma had me out of it at four weeks and then the physiotherapy team took over.

“The physiotherapy team were fantastic, they give you confidence in being able to move normally again and I loved having hydrotherapy! Before this I couldn’t lift my arm at all, now I can lift it level and I’m working on getting it above my head with the help of my physiotherapist.

“My care at Spire Harpenden Hospital has been brilliant, everyone is happy and seems to enjoy working there, I was looked after so well throughout my whole treatment and it was a pleasure coming into the hospital.”

Shoulders are prone to getting injured during falls as it is natural to brace yourself with your arms outstretched. Mr 76 NOVEMBER 2015

Sharma’s advice is to seek treatment at the earliest opportunity to avoid further damage. Surgery may be required depending on the severity of the injury, which may have either dislocated or fractured the shoulder. In some severe falls, a fracture and dislocation may occur together.

These procedures require either keyhole (arthroscopic) or open surgical procedures done at the appropriate time. Following this, regular specialist physiotherapy is given to achieve the best function of the shoulder.

ctober is always an exciting time in the kitchen calendar - all the major German kitchen manufacturers open their Factories and showcase their latest designs inhouse in various different locations. Whilst all the manufacturers are dependent on various manufacturing factors such as new veneers,and carcase materials, they are also desperate for the latest in technology for such boring components as hinges and soft close mechanisms that we just take for granted now.

I simply love the new designs from Pronorm, combining the lacquers and laminates in subtle colours ( that you never grown tired of ) with stunning oak and white glass units. The use of pocket doors whilst not a new invention have become very sophisticated and glide with ease and the new interiors from Pronorm show just how easy it is to be totally organised in the kitchen. The versaltity of designing with a German range is also reflected in the price. It is possible to achieve the same design look and indeed colour using a door finished in a coloured laminate for a fraction of the price when using a high gloss lacquer. Concrete laminate doors for example are also proving that you can have texture and colour without blowing the budget.

Although the kitchen has always been at the centre of family life, it has now also become the dining room, study and TV area all into one. The fact that all the food storage, prepping and cooking also takes place means that design needs to be simply tailored to individual needs. A couple with no children or animals have very different needs to a family with children. Its really lovely that so much can be stored away such as coffee machines, toasters and blenders,

leaving clutter free worktops. It is also possible to hide away Ovens, Steam Ovens and Microwaves with specially designed cupboards that bleep if machines are left on and the doors closed.
