in the final. The three coaches were Liam Dwyer, football, Nikhil Shah, badminton and tennis, and Simon Jackson-Turner, basketball. Councillor Farmer, Mayor of St Albans City and District, said; “This was one of the highlights of my year in office. It was an absolute privilege to meet these athletes who have done so well together with their dedicated coaches. “I told them that the whole District can take great pride in their achievements and will be very impressed with the huge effort they put into their sports. “For many of the athletes, it was the first time away from home without their families, so it was quite challenge for them as well as an unforgettable cultural and sporting experience. “Special Olympics is an excellent charity and is doing outstanding work in the St Albans District. I would urge anyone interested in supporting them to do so by, for example, volunteering or making a donation.” The Special Olympics World Games were held March 14 to 21, and the reception, organised by Special Olympics St Albans, was on Wednesday 10 April.

THE SHIRE LONDON Experience the only golf course in the UK designed by Seve Ballesteros
W
elcoming all levels of golfers, The Shire London, is one of London’s finest golfing experiences. 2019 is set to be a landmark year for the club, and an exciting one, having made further investment in to its Seve Ballesteros signature design golf course, making groundbreaking changes. Owned by The Bridgedown Group, The Shire London, situated in Barnet, has utilised the invaluable knowledge of the world-renowned golf course architects, Dye Designs, in order to make improvements. With this guidance, the club has undertaken the task of inter-seeding its greens with the finest ‘Bentgrass’ known to the game, and Pure Distinction to all 18 greens, used on some of the world’s most famous and respected golf courses. This has resulted in an even more rewarding challenge for golfers at the start of the new season. Now a feature of the 18-hole Masters and nine-hole Academy courses at The Shire London, this uniquely bright green grass is dense, and grows upright and aggressively. It also has exceptionally strong resistance to disease, extreme temperature changes and general wear, making it easy to maintain, as well as providing a truer roll than species more typically used in the UK. This initiative makes The Shire London one of the very first golf courses in the UK to introduce Pure Distinction bentgrass and places it within an exclusive class globally.

“We are hugely excited at the start of this golf season about introducing our golf course improvements to our members and guests at The Shire London,” commented Ceri Menai-Davis, Director of The Bridgedown Group. “The golf course remains true to Seve’s design, but, with the assistance of the Dye family, we are able to ensure our quality of conditioning shines through all year round.” Further to this, Dye Designs has also designed a new short game and putting area at The Shire London, offering its members and guests first-class practice facilities, whilst helping green staff with green keeping practices to ensure only the best techniques are used on the course. This programme of enhancements is the latest example of Bridgedown’s growing relationship with the globally-renowned golf course architecture specialists, who are also the primary consultants on two highly-anticipated venues being developed in the capital, West London Links and The Dye London. Are you ready to take on Seve’s challenge? Experience these first-class improvements at The Shire London for yourself. Whether you fancy hosting any type of golf day or simply booking a round, the club look forward to welcoming you and your fellow golfers.

They took inspiration from John Tradescant the Elder who was an English naturalist, gardener, collector and traveller. He began his career as head gardener to Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury at Hatfield House. In 1611, at Robert Cecil’s behest, John Tradescant the elder travelled through the Low Countries & Flanders to Paris, buying trees, flowering shrubs, vines, & bulbs for the new gardens at Hatfield. life with the interior of each room carefully crafted. “Lawn House is a beautiful building with so many traditional features that bring the rooms to life. We enjoyed the challenge of working with the Estate’s existing furniture and upholstery, whilst sourcing new pieces that would sit alongside, seamlessly. The bathrooms are clean and modern but have traditional Victorian tiling and detailing in every one. We worked closely with Lady Salisbury to create interiors that are an eclectic mix of both modern and traditional.” Nicola McEwan (Director at Mandeville Interiors) Lady Salisbury was closely involved in the project to ensure Lawn House compliments Hatfield House itself. The bedrooms are designed with a mix of contemporary and classic pieces of furniture, with rooms featuring individual objects gleaned from the attics of Hatfield House. ‘A family house for a number of years, Lawn House was empty, unloved, and dilapidated. As there was a great need for accommodation to run alongside the many events that take place in the Park, we decided to bring it back to life, and this is the result.’ – Lady Salisbury. www.lawn-house.com. www.mandevilleinteriors.co.uk

Ware bathroom Centre Returns W After a serious fire on 31st August 2017 we are finally back
are Bathroom Centre has been established in Ware since 1982 and has built up a reputation of being one of the finest suppliers of bathrooms in the area. Sadly the premises next door caught fire and it spread to our showroom causing hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage and the business was closed for 16 months while major renovations took place. We have fantastic staff and we were able to keep them all employed and based at our trade centre and warehouse nearby while repairs took place. We embarked on this project with one thought in mind, and that was to rebuild the showroom back to its former glory. What we have achieved is in fact better than we could have ever hoped for. We contacted all of the Major Bathroom brands in Britain and Europe and secured deals and displays, these are now complete, and the showroom is open and trading. We now have over 100 displays of bathrooms and showers, along with accessories cabinets, tiles and much, much, more. We are a very professional company and have the facility to plan your bathroom, produce 3 d drawings, and advise you on all aspects of the project. We have very experienced plumbing teams that we recommend ,who will be able to complete your bathroom to the very highest standard from start to finish including building, tiling ,electrics and decorating. Why not pay us a visit; we have so much to offer at Ware Bathroom Centre, 100 brand new displays of the latest designs and finishes, the biggest names and the best service with very competitive pricing. During his employment as a poster artist for the Public Relations Department at the War Office from 1941 until 1945, Abram Games designed over 100 posters as tools to recruit, educate and influence soldiers and civilians alike. ‘The art of persuasion’ presents these posters and explores how Games was inspired by his Jewish heritage, his experiences as a soldier, and the turbulent politics of the time. In helping to transform new conscripts into trained soldiers, encouraging support for the war effort and presenting an idealistic vision of postwar Britain, Games’s work offers a fascinating picture of a nation at war. This exhibition examines the techniques Games used to communicate his messages effectively. Guided by his mantra ‘maximum meaning, minimum means’, Games was the master of reductive design. From stark imagery
and visual puns to innovative use of the airbrush, his unique artistic approach changed the face of British graphic design. This year, and in conjunction with the exhibition opening at the National Army Museum, English Heritage will commemorate Games with a blue plaque. The exhibition will include posters from the Museum’s collection alongside loans from the Estate of Abram Games. See Games’s airbrush, his school report and the sealed pattern of his cap badge design for the Royal Armoured Corps. Visitors can also listen to interviews discussing the legacy of the artist and test their artistic skill by designing their own poster. A public programme will run throughout the exhibition with study evenings, tours, creative workshops, an academic conference and a Blitzthemed evening of jive. The art of persuasion: Wartime posters by Abram Games runs until 24 November 2019 at the National Army Museum, Chelsea. Closest tube Sloane Square. Adults £6, Concessions £5, Students £4, Groups £4, Under 16s and Serving Army personnel free

add a touch of elegance ‘Fashions fade, style is eternal’ – Yves Saint Laurent Ladies’ Day is racing’s special day for the Ladies, a highlight of the summer social calendar. Every racecourse is transformed into a sea of colour, with bright outfits topped off by the most flamboyant of hats

housands of women across the UK prepare weeks in advance, selecting their dresses, eye-catching hats and fascinators, and flock to the races with the action on the track of secondary importance to their stylish outfits. Ladies’ Day is the perfect opportunity to get dressed up, enjoy yourselves, mingle with celebrities, and hopefully get some winners if you are able to prise yourself away from the champagne bar. Ladies’ Day is a real fashion show, with everyone trying to outshine the other girls to be the most glamorous. When dressing to impress, Ladies’ Day is one of the most difficult days of the year. It is Spring, but the weather is utterly unpredictable; but it certainly won’t rain on the fashion parade! Generally headpieces, hats or fascinators must be worn in the grandstand area - with hats mandatory in the royal enclosure. From the most glamorous designer millinery, to the ridiculous and oversized novelty, or indeed eccentric hats, Ladies’ Day has it all. The other important element, the people; your guests, be it business prospects, family or friends, you will have all the ingredients you need. every part of the Plus Six has been refined or redesigned, with less than one percent of the 4,000 parts being shared across other Morgan models. A completely redesigned cabin celebrates the natural materials used within Morgan craftsmanship, as well as offering greater levels of personalisation than ever before. The new cockpit is more driver focussed and encompasses appropriately introduced technology, whilst also allowing customers more leg room and increased stowage space. A display screen is neatly positioned within the driver’s field of vision, subtly embedded into the dashboard with an unlimited level of wood and colour combinations. Sculpted doors incorporate all new puddle lighting, central locking mechanisms and hidden speakers. Like every Morgan, it is important that the vehicle presents the client with a flexible canvas to impart their own personality upon. The Plus Six offers greater levels of customisation than ever before. London Morgan are the flagship independent dealership for the Morgan Motor company, forming the capital city’s one and only Morgan platform at the epicentre of the United Kingdom. Located in the heart of South Kensington, London Morgan operates from one of the last working mews in London. Speaking on the unveiling of the car, London Morgan Managing Director Anthony Barrell said: “The Morgan Plus Six represents something of an unprecedented development for the Morgan brand. The new aluminium chassis culminates years of developments from the highly skilled design and engineering teams. Whilst the new aluminium architecture is a variation on the current ladder chassis famed by the 4/4, Plus 4 and Roadster, the Plus Six maintains the traditional elements of British craftsmanship that beats at the very heart of every Morgan car. The model represents an ideal concoction of modernity and traditionalism and signifies a significant development in Morgan’s history. The car is lightweight with a world class powertrain and we expect that the car will be the most dynamically capable, production Morgan to date.” Addictive power, unrivalled exhilaration and a true drivers sports car, the Plus Six heralds a new era of performance and refinement for the Morgan range. OUT & ABOUT
LONDON ART WEEK 2019 Friday 28 June - Friday 5 July. Preview Thursday 27 June
L
ondon Art Week, is a twice-yearly event, offering the best of pre-contemporary art in London’s traditional fine art district. The design-led festival will feature works from Ancient sculptures to Old Master drawings and post-impressionist paintings. Galleries in St. James and Mayfair are joined by numerous dealers from further afield: Holland, Italy, France, Belgium, Germany. Special talks and events are part of the experience, which is quite different to attending a fair, as each gallery has its own special ambience and personality. Connoisseurs, collectors and museum curators flock to London during this not-to-be-missed week in the international art calendar. London Art Week sees important gallery exhibitions hosted by leading fine art dealerships coincide with the Old Master sales at top-tier auction houses, gathering a critical mass of historic art for sale in the capital. For seasoned collectors as well as those simply curious to learn more about art, London Art Week dealers are always on hand and delighted to share their knowledge and expertise. Talks and events are scheduled throughout the week, delivered by some of the UK’s most distinguished art historians and curators. There is no tent; visitors have the luxury of discovering masterpieces within our beautiful gallery spaces, all situated within walking distance. London Art Week is important for art scholarship; dealers can spend years gathering and researching material for their exhibitions, often producing an accompanying catalogue. Last year, LAW revealed a number of major discoveries, including the only known portrait bust of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley, a lost painting by the great sculptor Antonio Canova, and works by Gainsborough, Lawrence, Artemesia Gentileschi and Joseph Wright of Derby. Amelia Higgins, the new Director of London Art Week, is one of the ‘next generation’ in the art world who revel in the variety and quality of older art on the market in London, and wishes

to enthuse a wider audience. “Imagine a series of mini-museums,” she says, “dozens of them, all within walking distance of each other, but with the added benefit of a private guided tour and where everything is for sale. The dealers and gallery managers love to share their knowledge and expertise, in conversation over a painting, sculpture or drawing, revealing its story and that of the artist. Learning about older art helps bring new ways of contextualising contemporary art, and buying it can be pleasingly affordable too: drawings start around £500.” London Art Week Winter is held in early December. www.londonartweek.co.uk Clockwise from top left: Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) Portrait of the barrister Samuel Rose (at Bagshawe Fine Art); Conte Pietro Rotari (1707-1762), La Dormeuse, c1752–6 (at Didier Aaron); A Hellenistic marble head of a Queen, third-second century BC, (at Forge & Lynch); Renaissance Court Casket from Newbattle Abbey, Master of the Perspective, Nuremberg, 1565, various woods, engraved bone, mother of pearl, alabaster (at Trinity Fine Art / Georg Laue, Kunstkammer Ltd); Peder Balke (1804-1887), Landscape from Finnmark (at John Mitchell Fine Paintings)

Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2019 Collection
“Is it a man or a woman? It’s neither one nor the other – it’s a clown.” The circus is a magical place.” *
T
he imagination of many artists has been stimulated by the fascination for a world that is both wondrous and raw, poetic and indispensable. Christian Dior enjoyed going to the Cirque d’Hiver, which is where, in 1955, Richard Avedon, who intuitively captured the essence of Monsieur Dior’s style in an extraordinary way, took his famous photo, Dovima and the Elephants , an image that perfectly evokes the wonder and majesty of haute couture. In 1950, British television also covered the House’s show at The Savoy in London with a report titled Dior ‘Circus’ Comes To Town The circus theme reappeared later at Dior under John Galliano’s creative direction. For isn’t a fashion show, after all, akin to the parade that inaugurates a circus show? Great 20th century artists such as Pablo Picasso, Erik Satie, Serge Diaghilev and Léonide Massine joined Jean Cocteau – a regular at the Cirque Medrano, which also counted Federico
8 4 M AY 2 0 1 9
Fellini among its fans – to develop the ballet Parade in Italy between Rome – the birthplace of Maria Grazia Chiuri – and Naples, before presenting it in Paris in 1917. For Maria Grazia Chiuri, this fantastical creative chaos provided the starting point for the Spring/ Summer 2019 Haute Couture Collection, debuted on 21 January 2019 in Paris in an authentic big top tent. The presentation began with gymnasts carrying one another down the runway on their backs, shoulders and even upside down, setting the stage for the thematic clothing and accessories that would follow. The visual unfurling of the pieces that compose it represents an unleashing of the memory and the imagination associated with the circus through costumes, fashion and art, extending and the evocation of Cindy Sherman’s work focusing on clowns. Models in glitter swim caps and mime-inspired eye makeup paraded looks paying homage to the Big
Top. Harlequin-inspired diamond patterns covered gowns, pleated skirts and sheer blouses; and circus motifs including rings of fire, wild animals, sideshow characters and loose ribbons reminiscent of a classic, striped tent made up the bulk of the collection. The collection consists of a superposition of images: a woman’s tattooed skin, reminiscent of the Victorian circus and its fairground phenomena, becomes a motif-drenched unitard that shapes the body and tells a wearable story under dresses. Powdery shades that come together and blend into an infinite palette – like those on the curtain painted by Pablo Picasso for the ballet Parade – also symbolise this sense of the worn, of the fine dust that sprinkles stage clothes. Skirts embroidered or inlaid with opaque sequins are shortened as tutus that nod to the circus codes of acrobats, tamers and riders. Maria Grazia Chiuri employs this broad variety of images to compose her own “parade”, comprising full and very light pants, narrowing at the ankle, which can also become sumptuous jumpsuits. Shorts are paired with sheer white shirts accented with ruffs or ribbons seemingly frayed with the passage of time. There are also leather corsets, sailor stripes, and black jackets inspired by that of the lion tamer. The geometric white clown outfit, whether spare or sumptuous, is reinterpreted through its materials, embroidery and proportions. The show was animated with performances by
the all-female circus company Mimbre, which, in a constant search for the poetic in the unexpected, highlights the trust and bond between the acrobats’ bodies. The circus is presented as a place of inclusion in which the clown, through its androgynous and asexual dimension, becomes the expression of a possible equality and an evocation of modernity, one where beauty, origin, gender and age are no longer important, and only technique and daring matter. * Quotation from the book: Le Costume de clown blanc: Gérard Vicaire, la passion pour seul habit by Sylvie Nguimfack-Perault. Can being in the great outdoors boost your happiness? L
ong before the perpetual bombardment of emails, social media, stressful jobs and consumer pressures we lived in the great outdoors. Residing amidst trees, water, the sky and the weather… innately embraced by nature. It can be claimed that life was much easier back then. Sure, we lived shorter lives and infant mortality was pretty scary, but psychologically there was simplicity. Rules were virtually non-existent. We didn’t need to work and there were no choices or decisions regarding lifestyle because everyone had exactly the same, which was not much. Contemporary life can be crammed full of worries; choices, injustices, confusions, congestion and anxieties, and many of us struggle to breath under that sort of heaviness. Some do search for the antidote or the alternative and have discovered the rejuvenating qualities of getting amongst our historical alfresco habitat. Don’t take my word for it. Recent research, at the University of Kansas, has suggested if you walk (we all know that regular exercise is good for you) or even sit (without devices) amongst nature you receive an added bonus of a deep-rooted spiritual type of uplifting effect to your wellbeing. “The “soft fascination” of the natural world appears to refresh the human mind, offering refuge from the cacophony of modern life… Nature is a place where our mind can rest, relax and reduce those threat responses, therefore, we have resources left over — to be creative, to be imaginative, to problem solve — that allows us to be better, happier people who engage in a more productive way with others.”
9 0 M AY 2 0 1 9
It’s not surprising that when we are in nature our bodies, our cognitive minds, and even our deeper felt senses, go to a place where they feel they truly belong. Relaxation, calmness and an uncluttered mind lead to a sort of freedom that we may find tough to experience in an office, house, an industrial unit or in a car. It kind of makes sense if you think about it. Humankind walked (getting our exercise fix and boosting our serotonin and endorphin levels) through grassland and trees gathering food for millions of years. Just 12,000 years ago the agricultural revolution gave us physically hard, dawn to dusk jobs, but at least we were under the sky. The industrial revolution took us out of the countryside and put us into factories. Most of us have stopped working in the fresh air. So, does being in nature allow more free ‘head space’ for you to be closer to the true you, more peaceful - more in the moment - less worried or happier? Many medical professionals and psychologists indicate that human beings have an inborn desire to be part of nature calling this phenomenon ‘Biophilia’. For some of us, sometimes, modern life can seem like a bit of a struggle. Being amongst the flora and fauna renews the mind and soul. The evidence is too compelling to ignore, take time to get out there and go for a walk or a run or just sit in the great outdoors. helpful that I felt I had to share them with you. 1. Good fit is the most important feature for any wardrobe You could have on the trendiest, most expensive outfit in the world—but if it doesn’t fit you properly, you’re not going to look stylish, and all your effort and money would have been wasted. Know your body shape and what suits your silhouette. This means that regardless of what’s in or out, your purchases will still retain a good fit and will flatter your figure which will leave you looking fabulous. It’s better to buy the right length skirts, jumpers and dresses than buy into short-term trends.

f you have an interest in what you wear, in style and in fashion then you’ve likely spent a fair amount of time reading magazine’s, online articles or newspapers full styling tips, street style observations, and educated thoughts about the world of celebrity dressing. It can all be a bit overwhelming at times, and it can be hard to know the right things to do all the time. The good news, though, is that sometimes things are much simpler than all that. There are a few general style guidelines that some of the world’s smartest, sharpest, and most stylish women stick to. I tend to use these rules in general for myself and also with clients. They are so universally wise and

2. Buy timeless clothing that will always be in style to underpin your wardrobe Think indigo denim, shirts, sweaters, blouses, stripe jersey tops, good knitwear, converse trainers, a good jacket, brogues or flats and a leather jacket. These items have always been in style and always will be – how you wear them may change but the items themselves will always be a safe bet. Jeans might be turned up one year & not the next but they’ll always be a wardrobe staple. This doesn’t mean that you should always play it safe – colour, pattern and texture play an important role in bringing these items to life. Also, with these items, always remember the next rule... 3. Buy the best quality you can afford The best quality items fit better, last longer and some cases will get better with age. Don’t be tempted by cheaper, throwaway items – 9 times out of 10 they don’t last. Invest in key items that you know you’ll get value from such as shoes and denim. Whereas a less expensive, on-trend pair of jeans is fine to grab every now and then, you really need quality denim in your wardrobe to last you from year to year. 4. Buy clothing that’s flexible Build your wardrobe around key items that are versatile and can be worn a number of different ways. A great example is a denim shirt. Worn with converse trainers, over a simple striped jersey dress and you’ve got a great, timeless casual look. Team up with some black skinny jeans, heel’s, a necklace and a smart blazer and you’ve got the perfect outfit for an evening out. 5. Get help to find your style If you need help with any aspect of your style, wardrobe and confidence then contact me for an consultation. I am passionate about helping women grow their confidence in their appearance by helping them understand the colours and styles of clothing that flatter them and make them look “wow”! HOW
MARY QUANT CHANGED FASHION
Prudence Wade explores
M
the legacy of the feminist icon who helped make the miniskirt famous
ary Quant may be instantly recognisable for her ginger bob, but it’s her youthful mod designs that she’ll be forever remembered for. Looking back at her influence, it’s clear Quant’s impact was far greater than just bringing miniskirts and hot pants into the mainstream - her impact on the fashion industry and society as a whole really can’t be understated. Walking through the Victoria & Albert’s latest exhibition, which is dedicated to the designer’s career between 1955-1975, brings the extent of this impact to life. Now aged 89, Quant’s designs - and her ethos - are as relevant today as they were back in the Swinging Sixties. Born in London to Welsh parents in 1930, Quant
9 6 M AY 2 0 1 9
grew up in an age of austerity - but her designs were an antidote to this, championing fun, frivolity and women’s liberation. She set up her first store, Bazaar, on the King’s Road in London’s Chelsea in 1955, and her fashion and lifestyle empire only grew from there.
A true titan of the industry, here are just some of the ways Quant revolutionised fashion... She was a role model for young women Quant’s clothes struck a particular chord with young women who, like the designer, were children of austerity who wanted to enjoy life a bit more
than the generation before them. Her style was playful and fun - she riffed on the tweed suits her customer’s mother wanted her to wear by raising hemlines and making everything a whole lot more youthful. Unlike many of the more traditional fashion houses, Quant wasn’t catering for the old elite instead, she encapsulated exactly what it was like to be a young woman in the 1960s. As a female professional excelling in a male-dominated industry - to this day, many of the major fashion designers are men - she was inspiration for a new generation of working women. She was the first designer to use PVC, they shiny, wet-look synthetic material. The result was clothes which were young, daring and just a bit sexy which was counteracted by the schoolgirl style she favoured, with Peter Pan collars galore. Quant certainly knew her audience - one of her ad campaigns was entitled ‘Youthquake’, showing just who she wanted to dress. She ended up trademarking the daisy symbol, which signified youthfulness and fun. And while Quant might not have invented the miniskirt, she certainly helped it become the defining garment of the decade.
She was a feminist icon The fashion industry predominantly caters to women, and yet the designing of womenswear is monopolised by men. Past exhibitions at the V&A have been dedicated to the likes of Christian Dior, Cristobal Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen titans in the industry, but all men. Quant managed to break the glass ceiling which still exists for female designers, but this wasn’t the only way she was a true feminist hero. In the lateSixties and early-Seventies, the women’s liberation movement exploded into the mainstream, and with it came various social shifts. Things were increasingly opening up to women in the UK - the Pill became available and society’s expectations of how women should dress were also changing. Her designs were a way for women to express their independence - she famously liked shorter hemlines because it made it easier to run to the bus. Hers weren’t clothes made to restrict the wearer, but to give them more freedom - Quant favoured a stretchy, wearable jersey material for many of her designs. She was also ahead of the curve in terms of androgynous dressing and constantly played with masculine tailoring. With ultra-girly miniskirts as well as more tailored suits, Quant showed that women didn’t have to express themselves in a singular way.
clothes were beautiful, but wholly unattainable for most women. Not only did Quant manage to shift more of the world’s focus on London, but she also worked hard to bring fashion to a wider group of people. As well as her eponymous high-fashion label, in 1963 she launched a cheaper diffusion line, called Ginger Group. With this, she pioneered new methods of production to make her designs cheaper and more widely available for the average woman. On top of this, she sold sewing patterns (known as Butterick patterns) so home dressmakers could recreate her clothes with their own materials for a fraction of the price.
Mary Quant became the template for the modern lifestyle brand
“The fashion industry predominantly caters to women, and yet the designing of womenswear is monopolised by men”
A retrospective like the V&A’s exhibition shows how Quant was a pioneer in more ways than one. Nowadays, the fashion industry loves a bit of nostalgia - whether it’s bringing back chokers from the Nineties or power shoulders from the Eighties. Quant was an early adopter and knew how to harness the power of bygone styles, giving Victorian outfits a Sixties update and even bringing back flapper styles. Another thing she became the template for was becoming a broader lifestyle brand. Today, fashion brands rarely do just one thing, instead in a race to diversify their offerings. Quant knew she could capitalise on her brand, so instead of just sticking to designing miniskirts, she tried her hand at everything from cosmetics and tights, to underwear, shoes and home furnishings. Quant’s style was instantly recognisable and easily translated to other products, making her the true template for the modern lifestyle brand we’re so accustomed to today. Mary Quant is on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum until February 16, 2020. See vam.ac.uk.
She made fashion more widely accessible Quant was a breath of fresh air in the fashion industry. This was a time when Paris was seen as the fashion capital of the world, with an emphasis on haute couture and uber-expensive garments. These M AY 2 0 1 9 9 7

ounded in 1892 in the heart of Germany, Poggenpohl is the oldest and best-known kitchen brand in the world. From that day to this, Poggenpohl have followed the vision of their founder, Friedemir Poggenpohl, who set out to ‘improve the kitchen’. For more than 120 years, Poggenpohl has continued to ‘improve the kitchen’, transforming it from a humble backroom into a living space that’s at the heart of the home. Poggenpohl’s pioneering history includes many firsts, including white lacquer kitchen furniture, ergonomic work-top heights, and the development of the kitchen island. With the current appeal of open plan living areas, the designers at Poggenpohl St Albans studio can offer advice on the most attractive and practical kitchen for your home and lifestyle and help transition that kitchen into the living space with matching units that house home entertainment equipment or a freestanding bar to take your kitchen from day time practical to evening entertainment. +VENOVO is a new, extraordinary product that now definitively eliminates the boundary between kitchen and living. +VENOVO gives the people

who live with it special freedoms. For example, flexibility, because the +VENOVO design is derived from the open layout and no longer from the classic kitchen with its firmly defined areas. If you would like to reorient yourself and switch city, you can move with +VENOVO and set the furniture up again in an uncomplicated way. Not only diverse, creative living variations emerge in combination with freestanding +VENOVO high and/or sideboards, even more: as a result, (experience) spaces are newly created and defined by the customers themselves. Robert Bell, studio manager Comments ‘When our colleagues in Hereford release a new range of furniture you know to expect something special. +Venovo did not disappoint, with furniture sitting on chrome legs; the strength of the frame almost defying logic. Brighten up your bathroom
Create a tropical paradise Following on from one of last year’s key interior trends, we’re set to continue welcoming an oasis of plants into our homes. However, for those of us who do not withhold green fingers, this isn’t a trend we’ve all been able to embrace, until now. So far, 2019 has seen the introduction of bold, leafy prints into interior décor and, thanks to Original Style’s Eden range, homeowners are now able to bring nature into bathrooms through the use of tiles. Original Style’s Eden range contains a variety of lush and leafy designs for a tropical paradise, from the soft and delicate Pergola, through to the more dramatic Hothouse and Glade. Pergola displays trailing fronds, Hothouse is a riot of palm leaves and Glade is a delicate bouquet of ferns. Designed and printed in-house at Original Style’s production site in Exeter, Devon; Eden’s designs provide a sensation of calm and are the epitome of the botanical trend. These tiles also feature a large format (600 x 300mm) to provide an almost seamless look for an appearance that mimics wallpaper but with all the advantages of tile. www.originalstyle.com 1 0 6 M AY 2 0 1 9

With brass and gold being a traditional trend, this movement has carried on into the interior world today because of the sense of warmth it brings to any living space. Opt for the Large Horizontal Bathroom Light with Pineapple Finials or the Swivel Bathroom Light in Distressed Brass to achieve this glossy glow-up. For a more subtle and modern look, choose the Double Swivel Bathroom Light in Brushed Nickel or the Double Curved Arm Bathroom Light in Polished Chrome. Totally Tropical Trend
W
ith its bold colour scheme, punchy prints and eclectic decor, Tropical Crush is a great way to introduce fun, stylish elements of summer into your home and to celebrate the changing seasons. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice explores how to showcase this tropical look in the home, in two signature ways: first, an all-out maximalist approach and second, an elegant minimalist take.
1 0 8 M AY 2 0 1 9
Play with prints, colours and patterns for a maximalist approach For a huge dose of personality, a maximalist take on the tropical trend is the way to go. With vibrant hues, nature-inspired motifs, and colourful prints all part of the mix, the trick here is in layering them all together. “The maximalist approach is a fun, chic way to introduce the tropical look in key areas of the home such as the living room or even the bedroom,” Rebecca explains. “It all begins with a good centrepiece: a cosy grey sofa, or dark fabric bed is a solid, comforting anchor to add and build on. And from there, anything’s possible! To really celebrate this trend, animal-inspired decor and art are a fun way to go, and other tropical elements such as palm prints and lush indoor plants also up the ante. Round off the look with gold or brass accents for an elegant, contemporary touch.”
“Colour also takes the tropical-meets-maximalism approach to new heights by adding a cheerful boost to the space. Whether it’s through brightly-hued cushions and throws or colour-blocking the walls, opting for striking colour combinations - such as Pantone’s Living Coral with teal - really embraces the tropical aesthetic and creates a strong, stylish contrast.”
Opt for a light, breezy palette for relaxed, minimalist style
Tropical’s calmer, natural qualities can also be embraced through a more minimalist aesthetic. “This take on tropical works in all parts of the home, all the way from the living area to dining room, thanks to its welcoming, soothing aesthetic,” Rebecca says. “It’s a stylish, versatile look that can be adapted from season to season, while still evoking a fresh, summery feel.” “Opt for airy hues like off-whites and cream for a breezy, well-lit interior. This creates a chic backdrop for a comfy grey velvet sofa, or even a rich green settee for a luxe boost. Soften the look with various textures such as cushions, rugs, and of course, natural greenery to keep in with the tropical theme.” Green’s lighter tones can also double as a stylish neutral for the walls. “Sage is still a trending colour for the home, and its tranquil vibes fit right into a minimalist, tropical-inspired space,” adds Rebecca. “Its soothing, warm undertones offer a subtle pop of colour, and lends a welcoming feel to rooms like the dining area. Lighter furniture will contrast beautifully with this versatile hue – a white dining set stands out nicely as a strong focal point. Natural textures are go-to elements for this look, so slip in materials like rattan and wood to tie the entire room together.” www.furniturechoice.co.uk

Air Plants:
The new favourite houseplant?
These low-maintenance plants don’t even need soil - and are 100% Insta-worthy. Air plant expert Andy Gavin introduces Hannah Stephenson to the trend
F
amiliar with air plants? They are set to become the new houseplant craze - with no soil needed and only the occasional mist. In fact, air plants take even less looking after than the hugely popular cactus, which is still proving a massive hit with home-owners (and Instagrammers). Wondering how this is possible? Air plants, which come from South and Central America and the Southern States, have no roots to plant in soil. And they can create all sorts of looks - from trailing foliage, which drapes from shelves like thick silver curly hair, to more structured specimens, whose leaves change colour to fiery red and produce bright flowers. “There’s a craze with houseplants at the moment, and the thing about air plants is that they don’t take up much space, there’s no mess or soil-borne fungus or gnats. They are structurally interesting and very low-maintenance,” says air plant specialist Andy Gavin, who won a gold medal at every RHS show he attended in 2018 and is due to exhibit for the first time at Chelsea Flower Show this year. “Air plants are highly collectable. There are around 700 species in the wild, hybrids, and so much variety. You can have one species and 10 different forms of it,” adds Gavin, who runs Andy’s Air Plants (andysairplants.co.uk) from his base in Cornwall. Curious to learn more? Allow Gavin to introduce you to the mesmerising world of air plants... Which ones can you buy in the UK? “You can find air plants in garden centres, a few nurseries and a few online sellers in the UK. There
are about 30 species that are easily available, all in the genus Tillandsia,” says Gavin. Tillandsias are in the bromeliad (or pineapple) family. The ones you are likely to come across include Tillandsia ionantha (which means purple flower). “Most tillandsias have a very minimal root system, which is just used to adhere to a surface, whether it’s a cliff base or a tree. In the wild, they grow epiphytically (on other plants or surfaces) on cacti or even telegraph wires,” Gavin adds. “The roots don’t take up any moisture or nutrients. That’s all done through the leaves. That’s the critical thing about how air plants grow.” Do they flower? “Yes - the bromeliad is a flowering plant family. All members of the species flower, and the flowering is hugely varied in tillandsias. You can have white, yellow, red, lots of lilacs and purples,” says Gavin. Sometimes the petals are tubular, which then open up, while others have bi-coloured flowers. A few, around 10-15%, are fragrant. Tillandsia multiflora is one of the many species that changes colour when mature and about to flower. The ionanthas also change colour from green/silver to a fantastic red colour, as though they are blushing. Where should you put them? All air plants need plenty of natural light. There are two main categories - the silver ones, which are dry growing, and the green ones, which are wet growing. Silvery-leaved species require, or will grow better, in higher light levels, so can be put in direct sunlight.

Species that are covered with fine hairs/scales or trichomes, giving them a soft hairy appearance, and species with fine leaves, need good air movement and quick drying. “Some of them grow on cacti in deserts, so don’t require humidity like you’d get in a bathroom. The best situations in the house for the silvery types is a south or very bright east or west facing spot. They are sun lovers, and the more sun you give, them the better.” Tillandsia types which are green or darker in colour, often with wider, shorter leaves and less or no visible hairs or scales require lower light levels, and will grow happily with less air movement in a more humid environment. These would be happy in a bathroom with plenty of light. Can you put them outside in summer? “Yes,” says Gavin. “The silver-leaved varieties love being outside in summer, where there’s really good air flow. The green-leaved species, which come from more humid environments like the Florida swamps, prefer more humid conditions, out of direct sunlight.” Their general hardiness is 4-5°C, so they will need to be inside during the cooler months. Growth rates slow down in less than ideal conditions. Is there a rule for misting? Silver types need wetting and drying. The drying is important. They need good air flow around them and once misted, must be dried quickly. “Give them a little mist in the morning, then they have the day in a sunny spot to dry. Mist them once a week in the winter, but in summer when you have good light levels and a lot of sun, you can mist them more,” says Gavin. Generally, through the spring, summer and autumn, you should be watering your plants three or four times a week, and only once a week in the winter. In terms of maintenance, as well as misting once a year you can peel off the oldest dying leaves and maybe trim the ends of the leaves.
1 1 8 M AY 2 0 1 9
“Air plants can grow freely, just hung on a bit of wire too”
How can they be displayed? “Quite often, you see them in glass orbs, but it’s not ideal for their growth, as air plants rely on air movement,” says Gavin. “You don’t want to be pushing them into anything. They look good among shells and on shells, but not stuffed into a shell. “They need to be on things, rather than in things,” he adds - which is why displaying them on wood can be particularly effective. Air plants can grow freely, just hung on a bit of wire too. Spanish moss, which drapes down like curly hair, is available in the UK and looks good as a trailing plant. This can just be hung on wire; it only has roots as a seedling but the mature plant just hangs. “You can arrange them on a table top or a large saucer, like a dinner tray, or I like to tie a bit of wire around the rosette and hang them. You can use colourful aluminium wire, but don’t use copper as they are allergic to copper,” suggests Gavin. “You can also tie them on to bits of driftwood, which makes for a very attractive arrangement. “A lot of nurserymen use stockings: They rip off a bit of stocking or tights and use a small strip to tie them on, because the material has flexibility and a bit more give. As for securing them, he says: “You can use glue - there are some florists’ glues available, but you have to be careful not to put too much glue around the base because quite often, if the plant does want to produce a few roots and you’ve got a big blob of glue over it, that will stop it. You can put glue on the base of the oldest leaves, which can secure it.”

HOW COOL IS YOUR POOL?
They’re glamorous, highly desirable, fun and great for parties! And if you’ve been stuck in a car or train on a sweltering summer day, nothing beats diving into one as soon as you get home. A swimming pool will keep you fit and have friends beating a path to your door on a hot day.

O
utdoor pools (not counting the above-ground temporary ones) can cost anywhere from about £30,000 up to £1 million depending on how luxurious you want to go. Do check whether you need planning permission before you start to create your dream pool. Position is everything: south-facing, out of the wind, away from falling leaves and the right distance from the house provides maximum enjoyment. There are two main types of swimming pool: above ground pools and submerged pools. Above ground pools tend to be cheaper because you don’t have to dig a hole and fit them but submerged pools are more traditional and provide easier entry for children or elderly people. In addition to the type of pool, you will have to decide on the type of materials you want your pool to consist of... There are three common finishes: liner; fibreglass shell; and tiles. These all require different amounts of maintenance and will affect the overall price of the job. You can use eco-friendly equipment such as ground source heat pumps and solar pool covers can reduce running costs. Increasingly popular is a pool as part of an outdoor entertaining area, perhaps with other leisure facilities, like a hot tub or play area. The addition of a spa to your swimming pool really adds a social dimension. What better way is there to while away some time in comfort and warmth, without all that energetic swimming? Safety is a priority: a surrounding fence with a lockable gate, and steps leading down to the main pool are advisable. Especially if you have children. They
can still look stylish, ie the curved Roman steps add a particular feeling of luxury to your swimming pool. You need to consult a specialist swimming pool company - they will be able to guide you from day one... beginning with the type of pool and size you would like, space availability in your outdoor space, and any specific requirements you have to ensure a swimming pool is tailored for you. They will take you through the process as to how your pool will be built, and ensure everything is set to what you want. SPATA (the Swimming Pool and Associated Trades Association) vets its members before membership to ensure that they are competent, professional and up to date in their methods and workmanship, which means that a SPATAaccredited contractor is likely to be a good bet. That said, the single most important thing you should look for in a contractor is experience. Someone with at least several years’ experience in building swimming pools is ideal: they will know what does and doesn’t work and will have built several different types of pools, which means they will be well-placed to advise you on yours.

Going for grey R
ume was established over fourteen years ago when husband and wife Richard and Libby Baker left the family furniture firm to strike out on their own. The philosophy behind the new company was to delight in the beautiful and the beautifully made and to pursue this by making lovely furniture of original design to the very highest standards here in England. Taking the idea of classic English furniture as a starting point Richard stripped it back to its barest essentials to capture its inimitable timelessness. It is this enduring yet contemporary quality that is quintessentially Rume. The pieces are never mere copies, never pastiche, they are resolute in their contained elegance and confidence, furniture that is both familiar and startlingly original. To complement this contradiction Libby started to gather together an unrestrained collection of accessories and cushions from just about everywhere. The idea was not to choose items that would simply blend or fade into the background but to source objects that would not only hold their own but also work together, it was in fact an extension of what Richard and Libby had been doing for years in their own home. With the inclusion of beautiful lighting from some of the most regarded designers and manufacturers

in the world it has developed over time into a unique look, one of playful sophistication and elegant eclecticism. There is no reason why a well considered interior has to be dull or dutiful and Richard and Libby have made it their mission to slay the overstuffed, to cheer the earnest mantelpiece and to banish once and for all the beige. We can’t get enough of the yellow and grey combo, it’s an ongoing obsession at Rume.Cheery and stylish what more could you want? www.rume.co.uk
