Knebworth to host spectacular summer music weekend
S
o, The Knebworth Prom is coming to Hertfordshire this summer to wow thousands of concertgoers with anthemic tunes performed by globally renowned artists. Here, we talk to some of the performers about what the Knebworth crowd can expect from two very different concerts…
Classic Ibiza
On Saturday 19 August the Knebworth air will be filled with dance anthems at Classic Ibiza. The evening brings together Urban Soul Orchestra (USO) and DJ Goldierocks, both of whom are excited to be performing at this amazing venue. Goldierocks, who has a busy year ahead with opening parties in Ibiza and festivals, including Glastonbury, works regularly with “great friends” USO. They first met at a private function on a yacht in Monaco for the Grand Prix about five years ago and have since performed with some of modern music’s A-list, including Tinie Tempah and Jess Glynn. Stephen Hussey, founder of USO, comments on what makes Classic Ibiza so special? “The Classic Ibiza formula works so well because it is something new and different that appeals to so many people: Ibiza dance tunes meets classical orchestra; stunning stately home meets music festival. There is something for all ages to enjoy everyone is guaranteed a great time.”
Ticket Competition To win 2 free tickets to Classic Ibiza or The Great British Prom, with VIP parking and a “meet & greet” with the artists. To enter, email your answer to the question below, to competition@fishmediagroup.co.uk Name the two orchestras performing at the Knebworth Proms weekend? Please include your full name. The winner will be contacted by Revival Productions via email. Closing Date: Friday June 9th
The track-list is going to be jam packed with Ibiza classics, including: “Sandstorm” by Daruda, “Waves” by Mr Probz and “Superstylin’” and “Easy” by Groove Armada. USO has played with Groove Armada before, so they’re delighted to be performing two of their tracks at Classic Ibiza.
The Great British Prom
Sunday 20 August is going to bring a completely different atmosphere to Knebworth. The Great British Prom, promises a very special formula with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), Classical Brit award-winning Only Men Aloud, soprano Annette Wardell and The Band of the Home Counties Pipes and Drums leading the way with a programme of iconic music from around the British Isles. NSO is renowned for being one of the very best in the country and has performed Opera Evenings with artistes such as Dame Kiri Ta Kanawa and Lesley Garrett. Justin Pearson, General Manager and Artistic Director of the NSO says: “NSO is thrilled to be performing this year’s Proms and I am sure that the specially devised programme will delight Knebworth. We shall faithfully recreate the buzz of the Last Night of the Proms; thrilling to the 1812 Overture, being charmed by the dazzling diva Annette Wardell, an entire band of pipers, fireworks, Only Men Aloud and a full symphony orchestra. Unmissable!” NSO has performed before with the Classical Brit Award-winning Only Men Aloud (OMA). A couple of years ago, they did a summer series of Last Night of the Proms across the UK and as Craig Yates, a baritone in OMA says: “We love performing with a live orchestra and the NSO are one of the best.” For more details on the events, visit www.classicibiza.co.uk or www.greatbritishprom.co.uk or call 01630 674342. aradise Wildlife Park is one of only two zoos in the UK, and one of six in Europe, recommended to breed Jaguars, as part of the EEP (European Endangered Species Programme). And as of the 2nd April 2017, Paradise have had their first Jaguar cub born at Paradise Wildlife Park. And it’s currently the only Jaguar cub in the UK. The cub’s parents, Kumal and Kedera were first introduced 18 months ago and hit it off from the start. We are delighted to say that currently both Kedera and her cub – a girl – are doing well. Kedera and the cub (who is yet to be named) will be out of view from the public until July, allowing them to bond and to make sure both mother and cub are happy and healthy. Jaguars are classified as ‘near threatened’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) so this is a real cause for celebration. However, keepers are keeping a close eye on mother and cub as with most baby wild animals it is a vulnerable time! So far, our keepers are very happy with the cub’s progress. Paradise Wildlife Park was formed in 1984 and is already well known for its animal breeding and conservation work. To date, the Park has made contributions of over £5,000,000 to conservation projects and wildlife causes in the UK and around the world, as well as other charities and good causes. It is also part of the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme, with successful Jaguar, African Penguin, Lar Gibbon, Cotton Top Tamarin, Silvery Marmoset and Red Ruff Lemur births in the past year alone. With recommendations to breed Snow Leopards and Red Pandas. Voted Hertfordshire’s Top Tourist Attraction and with a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, the new ZSH charity will continue to utilise the Paradise Wildlife Park brand in order to raise funds for its work and to act as a focus for an expanded wildlife education programme for visitors. Home to over 500 exotic wild animals, including big cats (Paradise is the only zoo in the UK with up to 5 different Cat species; Tigers, White Lions, Jaguars, Snow Leopards and a White Tiger), Monkeys (we have one of the largest collections of small monkeys in the UK), Zebras, Lemurs, Meerkats, Red Pandas, Tapirs, Penguins, Wallabies, Emus, Birds of Prey, Reptiles (including the UK’s largest Anaconda) and many more. Paradise Wildlife Park / The Zoological Society of Hertfordshire is situated 20 miles north of London, 7 miles from Junction 25 on the M25 and approximately 25 minutes from London Liverpool Street by rail. The Zoological Society of Hertfordshire (ZSH) is a registered charity (no.1108609). Beechwood Park School A Community in Action
E
dward Balfour, Headmaster at Beechwood Park School in Markyate, announced this month that the cumulative total raised for Keech Hospice Care by the Beechwood Park School Parents’ Association (BPSPA) and pupils had reached a staggering £200,000. Keech Hospice Care is a local charity based near Luton, which provides free, specialist care for adults and children with life-limiting conditions as well as vital support for their family and friends. Beechwood Park School has had a close connection with Keech for over 19 years and, during this time, donations have enabled the funding of programmes such as “Girls Aloud”, a club offering friendship and practical support to some of the young teenagers supported by the charity, and to ‘Sparklers’, a sibling bereavement programme. Regional and Events Fundraising Manager for Keech, Mark Relf, who attended a celebratory assembly at Beechwood Park, thanked the School for their commitment to the charity over many years and explained to the pupils some of the work that the charity does. Mr Balfour thanked the BPSPA for its amazing achievements, saying “Beechwood Park is delighted be involved with such a worthy cause and to be part of these programmes which make such a significant difference to people’s lives”. He added that “the School is delighted to continue its links with Keech

Hospice Care long into the future.” Beechwood Park, a School for over 530 pupils, still retains the family feel of a smaller School and has an extremely active Parents’ Association who contribute time, talent and enthusiasm to produce many events, for adults and children. Whilst fun plays a major part in these events, the underlying drive is the support and care for local charities and for the School community itself. The next big fundraising event on the horizon for the BPSPA is a Venetian Masked Summer Ball. Whilst pupils are enthusiastically decorating masks to adorn the walls of the School’s Great Hall and marquee, parent volunteers are meticulously planning the event and seeking sponsors. Guests will enjoy a dazzling evening in the School’s Queen Anne-style buildings and the Capability Brown landscaped grounds. The Parents’ Association has recently funded projects including a new swimming pool complex and an outdoor classroom in support of the School’s Forest School facilities. Beechwood Park is an independent day and flexiboarding School for boys and girls age 3-13. The School is located 15 minutes from Harpenden, 20 minutes from St Albans, Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead. Could this be the ultimate facial? W
e’ve all seen the picture of a woman lying peacefully with a pristine white towel wrapped around her hair, a mud mask spread across her face and two fresh pieces of cucumber resting on her eyes. It’s the stereotypical picture of what a facial should be like. And it just oozes relaxation. When I look at that picture, though, I have a slightly different thought. I want to know what the woman’s skin is going to be like when she’s done. You see, that’s the ultimate point of a facial. Beautiful, clear skin. Sure, a facial should involve a bit of pampering. But I don’t mean to be harsh - if you want to relax, go get a body massage or take time out at home! ;-) Looking at that picture, I know that woman’s skin will look better at the end of the day. But that’s not enough for Riverbanks patients. When you come here, it’s because you want to look your very best. You want to look great for your age, minimising lines and wrinkles and getting your skin as smooth as possible. You want your skin to have a really great glow, getting rid of grit and looking fully hydrated - so that when friends see you, they think how healthy you’re looking (instead of telling you you look tired)... …And so that your skin looks great, even without makeup. You want to address any short-term skin issues, such as blackheads, spots and hormonal skin. And you want to address long-term issues, such as lines and wrinkles, dull skin and sun spots. A standard facial is great, but won’t do all that. That’s why we have worked together to create the ultimate facial. The best one you’ve ever experienced. A facial that does everything I just described in one go.
Introducing… Riverbanks’ new signature treatment! The process is simple…. We start by looking at your skin and listening to your specific concerns, so that we can adapt every stage of the treatment so that it is exactly right for you. Next, we combine three of the most advanced skin technologies available to give your skin the 4 8 M AY 2 0 1 7
‘wow’ factor. We will exfoliate your skin with gentle Acids. The dead outer layer and oils melt away beautifully, and your skin will automatically look so much fresher. Just as importantly, later on the products we deliver to your skin will penetrate much much deeper, because all the barriers will be gone. The treatment also involves some lymphatic drainage – which improves circulation, detoxifies, firms and tones your skin – and a special peel, which will again help uncover healthy skin and deal with any texture problems, but without any posttreatment peeling or scaling. Next, we treat your skin to some microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, a procedure which uses tiny needles to puncture the skin in a pain-free manner. Microneedling triggers the creation of collagen and elastin – which make your skin strong and elastic – plumping your skin almost immediately. It softens wrinkles, because your skin gets thicker. And it helps tackle other skin damage, such as scarring, dark marks and skin damage. The texture of your skin will be incomparable. Then, we apply our super-popular radiofrequency treatment. This too stimulates collagen, making it the perfect way to target fine lines and wrinkles. For the same reason, it also helps lift your skin. It’s often described as a ‘non-surgical facelift’ – it’s that good. Radiofrequency waves also help your circulation and increase Oxygen to the skin, giving you a wonderful glow. Lastly, we nourish your skin with top-grade products that we’ve chosen specifically for you, getting all the right antioxidants, vitamins, peptides and other ingredients right in there. Our Vetia Mare range is wonderful. A Swiss brand that has jellyfish Collagen, the closest to Human Collagen, as a main ingredient! By the time, we’re finished – in only an hour and a half - your skin will look and feel better than it ever has. Patients who have already had our new superfacial tell us that they love the way they come away looking immediately better – and then watch their skin continue to improve for weeks afterwards, as the collagen stimulation works its magic. It really is the best facial you’ll ever have. Warm Regards,
Ravi
The Vetia Mare range can also be bought in the clinic, prices from £130.

Strobe your way into
Spring
WORDS: Lisa Haynes, Press Association

t’s basically highlighting trickery - think of it as the more subtle, flattering sister of contouring - and though the trend started with faces, it’s now transcended to hair, body, and even fingernails. Because strobing is all about achieving that elusive lit-from-within look, it’s the perfect trend to master for spring. Time to get glowing...
HAIR HIGHLIGHTERS Goodbye balayage and babylights, hair strobing is the hottest new brightening technique for tresses. “The idea of strobing is to accent hair with subtle strobes of colour to illuminate the face,” explains Georgie Mathers, Toni&Guy technical artistic director. “In the right places, it can diminish areas of width or widen a narrow face shape.” You can now strobe your strands at home too, using quick-fixes like spray-on highlighting toners or brush-on ‘hairshadow’ (like eyeshadow for hair). Find them in typical hair Undated Handout Photo of the label.m tone shades, or more daring Highlighting Toners, statement colours. “Limit the available from labelm.com/uk

BODY BRIGHTENERS Limb-baring season is approaching, and body strobing is the ultimate shortcut for honed and toned limbs. Michelle Obama arms, anyone? “Highlighting the areas of the body where light naturally reflects gives an instant sculpted effect,” says James Harknett, tanning guru and Fake Bake ambassador. “The easiest parts of the body to strobe for spring are the shoulders, arms and shins

Strobing is the beauty technique you probably didn’t know you needed. Still not fully au fait with what it means? It might sound like something out of a Star Wars movie, and strobing, you could say, is a bit like having a magic lightsaber in your beauty kit.

MANI ILLUMINATORS Sure, it’s subtle - but nail strobing is still a thing. Pearlised, sheeny manis were on repeat backstage for SS17, to top off all that healthy-looking strobed hair and skin. “Highlighting, or nail strobing, gives you a dewy, shimmery, healthy finish to the nails,” says Jenni Draper, nail expert and OPI brand ambassador, who adds that even lengthened talons can be yours, with some clever strobing trickery: “Using an iridescent polish will create highlights down the length of the nail, giving the illusion of longer nails.” For low-key nail strobing, she recommends sticking to champagne tones for fair skin, golden tones for olive skin, and terracotta tones for darker skin. If you want to up the nail ante, make an impact with high-shine holographic or chrome finishes. WALKING
SIMPLY TAKING STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH
W
ith everyone now counting their steps on a daily basis thanks to cheap-to-buy, easy-to-use fitness trackers it seems that good, oldfashioned walking is back in vogue when it comes to keeping fit. The latest trend comes as no surprise to heart health expert Dr Azad Ghuran who says that walking has always been a great way of keeping yourself in shape – whatever your age. Dr Ghuran, Consultant Cardiologist at Spire Harpenden Hospital said that walking leads to improvement in general health, has been proven to increase aerobic capacity and reduce body weight and blood pressure. As with all exercise, walking burns calories – someone who weighs 60kg who walks briskly at about 4 miles per hour for 30 minutes uses up around 150 calories. It has also been shown to reduce the risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer. “During exercise the heart needs to deliver more oxygen and nutrients to other organs. Walking increases the amount of blood the muscles in your legs and arms need to move and it is the heart’s job to pump more blood to the cells so with increased activity the heart has to pump more blood by
5 4 M AY 2 0 1 7
increasing heart rate,” said Dr Ghuran. “As the heart gets stronger it will send out more blood with each heart beat meaning it becomes a stronger and more efficient pump. “There’s no need to go straight into ten mile hikes. But a steady start, increasing your speed and distance as you get fitter and more confident, is a great way to get your heart pumping and improving your general health.” Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Harpenden Hospital Paul Whittingham-Jones added: “Walking reduces lower back pain and improves bone strength and there is evidence that, in people with arthritic joints, walking actually reduces joint pain. “The great thing about walking is that, provided you have the right sort of footwear, it is very low impact exercise and so does not damage your joints in the way running, tennis, squash and most contact sports can.” “In fact the extra exercise can help you lose weight which, in turn, takes more pressure off joints such as knees and hips.” Mr Whittingham-Jones also said that walking is an integral part to most post-op rehab regimes whether the patient is recovering from sports surgery to the hip or knee or convalescing from hip or knee replacement surgery. www.spirehealthcare.com

“Specifically designed for wrinkles and lines around the eyes, Tria’s latest handheld laser device delivers thousands of microscopic laser lights when it comes in contact with the skin, to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin - the stuff that keeps you looking youthful! - so it’s important your skin is properly cleansed before use. Once ready, I started the treatment by gliding the tip of the laser in small circular motions, as advised, around my eye sockets, starting underneath the eyes and moving up to my temples. It was a tad painful at first - a stingy, pinprick sensation - and it took me a few days before I could tolerate using it for a full minute per eye. The treated area was noticeably red afterwards, but it calmed down overnight, so I carried on zapping away every night for eight weeks as recommended. And it was totally worth it! From the second week, my crow’s feet looked less defined and the skin around my eyes looked smooth and firm. Friends even noticed and asked if I had changed my eye cream or tried a new spa treatment. Now that’s what I call a result!” Tria Age-Defying Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser, £299 (www.triabeauty.co.uk)

Why It Pays Property Owners Dividends to Opt For
Technologically Advanced Replacement Windows
W
e all know it makes sense to replace inefficient, outdated or inefficient existing windows, given the ever rising costs of electricity and gas, with the most affordable thermally efficient replacement windows in the UK marketplace. However, the upfront costs can be a reason to keep putting off improving the aesthetics, living environment and keep putting up with thermally inefficient out dated windows and doors. Given home buyers now expect a property to be fully double glazed (or a large reduction on the asking price), one should be pragmatic and if you don’t
6 2 M AY 2 0 1 7
have the cash flow to replace all the windows and doors in one go, then do them in stages, starting with the ones in your living rooms and/ or bedrooms first, so you get the maximum benefit from stage one of your home improvement investment. Technological advances in the United Kingdom double glazing industry over the last 10 years or so have caused the first and second generations of replacement double glazing (which at the time was a significant improvement on single glazing) to be superseded by high performance “thermally broken” energy saving efficient windows, enabling far better energy ratings to be achieved. WER’s (Window Energy Ratings) were introduced by the British Government many years ago to help UK consumers know how thermally efficient any particular combination of frame, gaskets and glass sealed units were. Back on 1st October 2010, the Building Regulations changed so that from then on double glazing installers, suppliers and home owners had a legal responsibility if replacing windows, to replace them with either an independently tested “C” rated, “B” rated or “A” rated window, with until fairly recently, an “A” being the highest rating available, and “C” being the minimum standard permitted under the current
“Independent double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Window Company Ltd have been replacing windows in the UK for over 30 years”
Building Regulations. This legislation brought about a major sea change in the UK double glazing industry, whereby it had to suddenly scrap any outdated non-thermally broken window products (which were unable to achieve the minimum “C” rating) for higher quality, better designed, more expensive, thermally broken products, whether or not the window frames made out of aluminium, timber or UPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride). The resultant improved internal living environment and financial savings on energy bills for property owners has led to much of the UK housing stock being better insulated, so much so that home owners looking to sell their properties with older outdated double or single glazing are severely disadvantaged, or at the very least not able to achieve the sale price they had hoped for. For any double glazing manufacturers to achieve a decent window energy rating they need a frame that is thermally broken (i.e. where the outer pane and inner pane are separated, so that the cold on the outside cannot interfere with the warmth on the inside) and a high specification sealed unit with a warm edge spacer bar separating the inner and outer glass panes which is filled with an inert gas like Argon, which not only insulates, it helps with sound reduction too. Recent technological advances now enable certain UPVC or PVCu products to obtain even greater energy ratings than “A”. Some companies use triple glazing to achieve better than an “A” rating, whereas others have opted to improve their double glazed frames, making them more robust as well as more thermally efficient in the process. Triple glazing sealed units costs more than double glazed sealed units, simply because there are two warm edge spacer bars, rather than one, and three panes of glass rather than two. This means triple glazed units cost more to replace if they break down or crack than double glazed units, a factor worth noting if choosing between these two options. Independent double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Window Company Ltd have been replacing windows in the UK for over 30 years. They have recently switched all their PVCu casement windows with side hung and top hung opening vents to A+ as standard. The outer window sash on the bespoke PVCu windows they supply and install now has six chambers increasing the thermal break between the inside and outside, as well as the robustness of the product. They also now offer a PVCu triple glazed window with a slimmer outer frame that has an A++ energy rating. As it is now possible to have professionally fitted bespoke A+ energy rated double glazed windows installed for far less than A+ or A++ triple glazing, it makes better financial sense to invest in double glazed A+ windows. If the most thermally efficient windows on the planet are not well fitted, they won’t perform, so it is important to select an experienced
installer you can trust to do a professional job on your property. The dividends therefore, in terms of lower heating bills start immediately after having well fitted thermally broken energy saving windows installed. It therefore pays to have them all done, even if in phases. To find out more about the potential replacement window options on your particular property, along with free professional advice as to which type and style of windows would add the most value to your home (whilst saving on heating bills), why not ask family owned and run independent double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Windows for a free no-obligation consultation with one of their experienced experts by calling 01727 238658 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk M AY 2 0 1 7 6 3

Fantastic Pool House Features
Home swimming pool design has come a long way since the 1970’s when pool houses were simple pine chalets. Today, Origin, the UK’s original luxury indoor pool company, designs and builds pools with the same style, quality and finish as a high spec home. Here, it has outlined the five features that are popular among families enhancing their homes with these spectacular builds.
6 4 M AY 2 0 1 7
1. Seating Area
The pool house is more than a place to swim for many families. It is an extra living space where you can make memories during the summer months or a place to watch the cold of winter pass by. With this in mind, seating areas, complete with additional appliances such as televisions and sound systems, are now a common feature in many family pool houses.
2. Additional Rooms
It’s an ideal space for entertaining, which often means there is a need for multiple rooms. A changing room always comes in handy and can be built to your requirements. 3. Colour Tiles
The tiles lining your pool can change the colour of the water. Brown tiles give the water a soft green appearance which exudes a feeling of luxury when paired with soft cream and beige tiles. Similarly, grey tiles can make the colour of the water appear bluer.
4. Large Format Pool Tiles
Large format tiles offer a modern, sleek and contemporary design. They are cost-effective and cover large expanses of space. Plus, they are easy to clean due to minimal grout joints. This makes them the perfect choice for any homeowner.
5. Feature Wall
A feature wall is a great way to remove a large expanse of plain wall and there are some very creative ways to make an impact using interior design. Choose compelling artwork that is suitable for a pool environment or create an eye-catching pattern on the wall. M AY 2 0 1 7 6 5

milestone is fast approaching for Hertfordshire based Hawk Interiors as they reach their 10 year anniversary this summer. In 2013 the company opened a second showroom in Harpenden and now, a further four successful years later, Hawk Interiors is set to open a third showroom covering two floors on London Road in St Albans this summer. In celebration of their 10 year milestone, Hawk Interiors 4000sqft Gaddesden Row showroom will play host to its 10th Birthday Party on Saturday 1st July. Set within the showroom’s beautiful rural farm location, with Pimm’s and ice cold beer on tap, a mouth-watering hog roast and a talented face painter for both young and old, this will be an event for all the family to enjoy.

E
ven if you don’t wear pink, there are so many facets to this rosy hue that if styled correctly (much like that pink Zara trench coat that’s flying off the rails), it can lighten the home without leaving it looking like a Disney-esq doll’s house. The secret is to blend, blend, blend... A balletslipper sofa, a sugar-almond cushion and a coat of pale pink gloss can be designed to shape, colour and contour, and be as flattering as your favourite blush.
ROYAL FLUSH “If you’re looking to bring pink into your palette, ensure you pick your shades carefully. Avoid overpowering a room with saccharine hues, and opt for more mature tones, that will add a feminine touch without looking too girly. Deep dusky pinks are right on trend and will work perfectly for a look such as this,” says Ian Dykes, founder and director, Voyage Decoration. “If you’re opting for brighter shades, introduce them in small pops on accessories, or through accent detailing such as piping. Placed alongside masculine colours, such as deep navy blues or moody greys, your scheme will be beautifully balanced and seriously stylish.” Another trick is to remember that when pink is combined with white - roses in a white vase, or scented candles on 7 4 M AY 2 0 1 7
a mirrored table, for instance - it can look cool and glamorous. “As we enter into the summer months, pink continues to be one of the biggest colour trends of the year,” says Philip Watkin, DFS design director. “It’s a lot more versatile than you first might think and can be used in a variety of ways. We’ve used pink fabrics on our furniture to create a contemporary and soft environment in the home. Paired with on-trend metallic, especially copper, clean white walls and touches of grey, pink - blush or even bolder fuchsia tones - will create a calm yet vibrant living space.” Pink Betsy 3 Seater Sofa, £579, DFS (www.dfs.co.uk); Alexander Wing Chair in Chiaso Shark, £1,617; Pritika Cushion in Lotus, £61; Mawar Wall Art (wallpaper) in Lotus, £29 per metre, Voyage Decoration (for stockists visit www.voyagedecoration.com); Eaton sofa in Nina Campbell Montacute Weaves Pencarrow Fabric, from £2,387; Club Chair in Osborne & Little Brehon Linen Donard Fabric, £1,167, Delcor (www.delcor.co.uk); Star by Julien Macdonald White Lustre Vase, £30; Feather Vase, £40 (available end of April); White Lustre Vanilla Scented Candle, currently reduced to £12 from £15, Mirrored Nest Of 2 Tables, currently reduced to £168 from £280, Debenhams (www.debenhams.com)

“Mixing grey and pink is a popular trend for 2017, giving pink an edgier look than traditionally seen”
When it comes to updating our favourite rooms, some of us go to great lengths to shop the latest looks. And if your last dalliance was with 50 shades of grey (or darker), then the good news is you can rekindle that flame with an innocent petal pink. “Adding colour such as pink to a room is an easy way to update the feel of the space,” says Lucy Ackroyd, bed linen design manager, Christy. “Our Harlow bed linen uses a classic design of large-scale flowers, digitally printed in elegant grey and pink tones. Mixing grey and pink is a popular trend for 2017, giving pink an edgier look than traditionally seen.” But if this still sounds a little too innocent and you’re after a touch more drama, pink framed by violet or black is a tempting scheme that can be dressed up to suit your space. When it comes to pink fabrics, we often associate it with lightweight, delicate materials, like silk. So what could be lovelier (and more practical) than introducing the shade to a scheme with items that are also strong and sturdy? Thankfully, designers are going full-on rose this season and weaving it into heavier furnishings, with wools and rugs popping up in pink, adding texture to the ‘livingscape’ and looking blooming marvellous. “Wool is naturally associated with the winter months, simply due to its cosy texture and warming properties,” says Martin Aveyard, design director, Bronte by Moon. “However, many forget that wool also regulates temperature, keeping the home cool even in the warmer months. “Consider Shetland wools in fresh and vibrant tones which instantly lift a room, brightening the decor without compromising on warmth and comfort. “Hues of pastel pinks evoke a sense of sunnier climes, and are perfect for updating a statement armchair without losing the cosy feel of wool.”
Pink & Natural Cushion, £49.95, Bronte By Moon (www.brontebymoon.co.uk); A by Amara Lewes Sheepskin Rug in Rosa, £137.50, Amara (www.amara.com)
FLAWLESS FINISH Want to go whole hog and paint your walls pink? Taking the leap can be as panic-inducing as it is exciting - es pecially if it doesn’t result in the photo finish you were hoping for. So you don’t get it wrong, think about the direction your room faces and how it looks when the sun shines. “Pale pink looks best in a room with abundant natural light - showing off a sense of freshness”, says Kayleigh-Ann Whybrow, senior technical colour consultant, Johnstone’s Paints. “Team Rosebud, a particularly popular colour this year, with white trim and furniture, to allow the colour to pop. This will allow the room to have a good sense of proportion and freshness, yet retain a sense of warmth and cosiness. Add pops of coral, bubble-gum pink and cyan to give interest. “Undemanding and subtle colours, like soft and blush pinks, are emerging in ‘dirtied’ and toned down versions of their former fresh counterparts, showing off the colour’s versatility,” Whybrow adds. “Combine a soft pink with a slightly deeper, greyer pink and a chalky, stormy blue-grey. The softer, more feminine side of the colour palette creates great contrast with the edgy blue-grey - offering a calm and soothing counterpoint. “Keeping pattern and contrast minimal invites our mind to rest, and to find a new balance between fast paced and slow living.” Johnstone’s Paint One Coat Matt Emulsion in Rosebud, currently reduced to £12 from £14.99 for 2.5L, B&M (www.bmstores.co.uk) Top: Christy Harlow Bed Linen Pink, Double Duvet Set, from 110, available from christy.co.uk; Circle: Eaton Sofa in Nina Campbell, available from delcor.co.uk. “Using an interior designer can help you to realise your own ideas far more effectively”
Beautiful design by Beverley Barnett Just by talking to Beverley you can see how much she loves her profession.
W
ith a career now spanning over 30 years, Beverley first started in Interior Design with the prestigious Colefax & Fowler. She went on to establish her own business and is a highly respected member of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID). Being a member of the BIID means that Beverley is qualified by training and experience to plan and supervise the design and execution of interiors and furnishings - and to organise the various arts and crafts essential to their completion. In order to join the BIID, an applicant must fulfil stringent entry requirements. This means not only demonstrating artistic ability, but also proving an established business of several years’ standing and operating in a professional manner. Most of the work that Beverley has undertaken has been in private homes, throughout the UK and worldwide. The styles have been as diverse, ranging from contemporary apartments in the city to traditional country homes. She admits that she can indulge her passion for traditional design and ultra modern minimalism, without losing sight of the fact that her clients’ homes are an extension of their personalities. She recognises that she is called upon to interpret their wishes and eliminate any potential stress and trauma that can occur when clients attempt to handle projects on their own. Pivotal to Beverley’s success is the relationship she forms with her clients. She is very aware that 7 8 M AY 2 0 1 7
the relationship between an interior designer and her client often becomes one of the most personal outside the immediate family. Whether you choose a designer by recommendation, local research or a follow-up having seen the result of their work, the rapport with your designer establishes itself very quickly. This client/designer empathy is intrinsic to the success of any project. Far from indicating a lack of taste or initiative, using an interior designer can help you to realise your own ideas far more effectively and quickly than going it alone. As Beverley explains: “A designer is also significantly less expensive than you might imagine, saving you from making those costly mistakes.” Beverley never imposes her ideas upon her clients. Instead, she will devote the time carefully listening to their likes and dislikes and then works with them to create an environment that is truly ‘theirs’. Her ability to listen ensures that she interprets clients’ requirements effectively and efficiently. By using an interior designer of Beverley’s standing, you can be assured that the re-design of your home will be an enjoyable experience. And if the need is to extend the service to the garden and surrounding areas, you can be completely confident that the same level of expertise will be available for you. So if you want to bring a breath of fresh air into your home this spring, just ring Beverley on 01923 857029 or visit her website www.beverleybarnett.co.uk

Declutter by design words: Sam Wylie-Harris
W
e’ve all heard the saying, ‘tidy house, tidy mind’, and there’s a lot of truth in it. Maximising your space and ridding yourself from all that clutter can be far more positive than you might think. Not only can hoarding cause us anxiety and stress, but freeing your home of unwanted stuff means you can actually display the things you really love, creating a style statement with a dual purpose.
But where to start? HALL OF FAME First impressions count, and the hallway offers a clear vision of what the rest of the house may look like. Storage benches are the perfect way to declutter your hall, and baskets grouped together in varying sizes can be functional as well as fun. And don’t pooh-pooh the humble shoe rack; it can take care of wellies, trainers and everyday shoes, and you can always turn one of the shelves into a makeshift wine rack!
SHOW KITCHEN “Even if you have ample storage space in your
kitchen, it’s important it’s well organised, so you can really make the most of it,” says Terry Brown, commercial director at Benchmarx Kitchens. “You can ensure you maximise usable space by choosing different storage solutions that work best for your needs. If you’re keen to have more space for food items, why not incorporate a larder/corner pantry unit into your scheme, which will ensure that all of the available space is used?” Also, don’t feel you have to be traditional. Once you’ve ditched any chipped crockery, glassware and old cutlery, clever ideas - such as a step ladder or open shelving units - can be used to display favorite pieces, chinaware, chopping blocks, storage containers and even cookware.
LOVE YOUR LIVING ROOM This is the place that needs to work extra hard, especially if you want to keep it clutter-free, as it’s where we relax, watch TV, entertain - and display all those precious family photos, paintings, books and pretty knick-knacks. Back in vogue, a dresser or cabinet can not only mask a TV screen when not in use (and unsightly cables), but provide extra storage space for possessions you can’t bear to part with. Another must-have, a butler’s tray (with a removable tray) is a modern yet timeless way to serve cocktails, canapes or a TV supper, and with a wide table top it can double up as a sideboard. And if you’re not sure where to store those glossy magazines, winter throws and small soft furnishings, a footstool with hidden storage, covered in a favorite fabric, could become a key feature (it’ll also come in handy for putting your feet up after all this tidying!).
BEDROOM BLISS Taking time to create a clutter-free boudoir, with the focus on a few crucial items - like crisp bed linen, a tidy dressing table, fresh flowers and a radio instead of a TV - will look AND feel relaxing, and therefore help you get a decent night’s sleep, too. An untidy wardrobe, strewn with clothes that should have gone to the charity shop years ago, might mean you start the day with unnecessary stress as well. But with a little thought, you can make the most of your accessories, while hiding more mundane items behind closet doors. Your color scheme could add a sense of calm, too. “Cool tones of soft greys and neutral light-grain wood are key bedroom color palettes this year. Our stunning new color combinations, such as cashmere, stone and satin white, also work with this trend perfectly to create a tranquil space,” says Rachal Hutcheson, design expert. Along with calming those wardrobe woes with fitted units, an ottoman bed means heaps more storage to stow things away, without taking up extra space in the room. 8 2 M AY 2 0 1 7

FARROW & BALL REVEAL THEIR KEY COLOURS FOR 2017 Radicchio
Studio Green
Hay
All White
Pink has been at the forefront of decorating for the last year and there is now a natural progression to stronger reds, with their spirit of bold optimism. Radicchio feels exuberant, romantic and sensual, rather than clean or graphic, due to its complex underlying blue tone.
There is something almost defiant about the use of botanic Studio Green on walls instead of the ubiquitous charcoal darks. It is unapologetically clubby and has a fantastically timeless old world quality, but can be used in the most modern of rooms.
E
ncapsulating both dramatic, vivid hues and more understated, subtle tones, the colours signal a readiness to embrace definite colour within interiors as we become more confident in our decorating choices. The four colours; Radicchio, Studio Green, Hay and All White, have an enduring appeal that remains comfortingly familiar despite being used in surprising combinations. From the timeless, bygone feel of Hay and Studio Green, to the vivacious tones of Radicchio and the counterbalance of pure, uncomplicated All White, the colours have a refined quality that works wonderfully in both contemporary and traditional homes.
Understated Hay feels soft and familiar. Its quiet quality creates rooms that have a hushed atmosphere as well as an unmatched depth and gentleness. It is not a hot or sunny yellow - although it becomes more raw in bright light - but rather an aged, whimsical tone with an underlying green.
8 4 M AY 2 0 1 7
A pure white like this is devoid of both colour and association. All White has no pigment and creates an uncomplicated feel which is naturally fresh, but not stark or ‘brilliant’. The key to this look is to create a mood of stillness and calm by layering different whites, and only whites, together.

Recalling the iconic layouts of grand Georgian and Victorian garden squares across the UK, the central space of Gabriel Square has been designed as a place in which residents can meet and interact and local amenities include the famous town market, the cinema and a Michelin-starred restaurant - all just minutes’ walk away from the scheme. The design draws on inspiration from two distinct design philosophies: ‘Purist’ for vertical townhouse living and ‘Modernist’ for lateral apartment living, the scheme takes inspiration from local landmarks including St Albans Cathedral. Simon Kincaid of Conran and Partners details, “The sequence of harmonious internal spaces are positioned around vertical and horizontal connections to create continuous views through and the feeling of calm. The contemporary design was inspired by simplicity, quality, contrast and transparency”. The interiors have been conceived as a sequence of harmonious spaces, holistically connected by a warm palette of natural materials, tactile surfaces and layered fabrics. The design approach focuses on seamless engineering with bold, graphic and clean lines, with contemporary appliances including kitchens by Poggenpohl, reflecting the clean, contemporary architecture with a simple material palette and elegant detailing, and bespoke bathroom designs with custom vanities from Laufen and Crosswater brassware. The square, which forms the heart of the development, is the emotive vision behind a project, which delivers high-quality homes with expert craftsmanship. As well as its proximity to the rail station and regular train services to the capital, Gabriel Square has good connections to the M1, M25, M40 and A1, to destinations including London, Watford, Oxford
and Cambridge. To discover more about Gabriel Square visit their website: www.gabrielsquare.com or make an appointment (T: 01727 226 881) to visit the on-site Marketing Suite.
