Just like real woodland, most animals in the exhibition do not have labels on them, so try some curious challenges to test your spotting skills and identify the creatures you find using real field guides. Track down animal poo pictured around the gallery, spot real beetles and match colours to wildflowers. As the seasons change, woodlands change too. Experience the seasons from winter through spring and into summer, as new specimens are revealed each month in the gallery, reflecting the natural world outside. avin Gardiner’s first sale of 2018 is highlighted by two magnificent guns that showcase the wonderful gunmaking talent in the UK today. A collection of around a dozen guns by London gunmaker Frederick Beesley, includes the magnificent Presentation quality Dinosaur gun, that was among the last guns completed by this maker in 2006 and appears virtually unused. Estimated to fetch £30,000£40,000, the gun is engraved by Bill Sinclair and its construction utilises the talent of many of the finest gunmakers working in the trade today. Comprising a Holland & Holland type selfopening mechanism, the left lock is engraved with a mammoth against a wooded landscape, while the action base is adorned with a flying pterodactyl above a smoking volcano and the right lock is engraved with a running deinonychus. From over the border, is a fine pair of 12-Bore

“Creative Art” engraved single trigger round action over and under ejector guns by Scottish maker David McKay Brown. Engraved with large Scottish scrollwork, the maker’s name is signed within a panel. Carrying an estimate of £30,000-£50,000, the maker confirms that the guns were built in 2003 and appear relatively little used and retaining virtually all of their original finish. April 2018 will see the running of the 164th Men’s Boat Race and 73rd Women’s Boat Race, both now taking place on the Championship Course.

Race course, known as the Championship Course is 4 miles, 374 yards or 6.8 Km long, stretching between Putney and Mortlake. The start of the race is marked by the University stone, a few hundred yards upstream from Putney Road Bridge and for the first quarter of a mile, as the crews pass the historic boathouses of Putney Embankment. The Finish Line is just a few yards downstream from Chiswick Road bridge and here the crowds on Race Day are as densely packed as those near the Start. What those crowds witness as the crews cross the Line is the ecstasy of the victors and the despair of the losing crew. On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames to witness the action. Remember, all the riverside pubs will be heaving, with the crowds spilling out onto the towpaths. If you’re planning to watch from a pub, arrive early! There are large screens at Bishops Park, Fulham and Furnival Gardens, Hammersmith which mean you will be able to watch the whole Race before and after the crews have passed. The parks will also feature food outlets, beer stands and merchandising stalls.

Silent Pool Distillery to open new distillery extension
W
ith the drive to expand their presence both nationally and internationally, Silent Pool Distillers, producers of the multiaward winning Silent Pool Gin, are due to open their new distillery in April this year, just three years after they first started back in 2015. The new distillery extension will contain an 1800L, custom made copper still, 5 times the size of their original still Juliet, allowing the company to keep up with the current and increasing global demand. Unlike many other distilleries, Silent Pool Distillers proudly bottle their spirits onsite ensuring that each product is entirely crafted within the four walls of the distillery. It was of great importance to the company that even with increased production, their ethos of personally overseeing every stage of production remained. With the aid of an EU grant the distillery will also unveil a new bottling line built in Italy which will enable the company to hold true to overseeing each stage onsite but also to meet the

fast growing demand. The expansion has been driven in large part by exports, Silent Pool Gin is now available in over 24 countries including most of mainland Europe, Japan and America; this has resulted in more jobs for local people and local trades who supply the business. The efficiency of the larger still will allow the innovative distillers to dedicate more time to product development within gin but also whiskey and brandy. Part of what makes the distillation process so authentic is the method they use to power their hand made still. Similar to Juliet, the new still will be heated by steam from a reclaimed, vintage boiler that’s fired on local hardwood. Originally designed to power a steamboat in a 1980’s film, this classically British, McEwen boiler has been reformed and adopted by the distillers at Silent Pool and is now an essential part to the production of their handcrafted spirits. Becoming a ‘greener distillery’ was integral in the planning stages of the expansion and with over 40 solar panels covering every square inch of the new roof, the distillery extension will now generate enough electricity across the year to be completely carbon neutral, Silent Pool Gin really will be made by sunshine! Why You Should Consider an All Through (3-18) School for Your Child The need to belong is fundamental to humans. In an all through school, there is time to develop the ‘care-giver’ bonds. As parents who know staff and staff who know children and children who know other parents and staff, a triangle of powerful care-giving is established. It is an exceptionally strong equation for supporting wellbeing and happy children are successful children. Maths not adding up? Radlett Learning Centre provide GCSE support Tutoring centre aims to help close the numeracy skills gap
A
s a nation, maths isn’t our top subject. The influential Pisa rankings, based on tests taken by 15-year-olds in more than 70 countries place us more than a third of the way down at 27th; meaning that more than a fifth of our 15-year-olds don’t know enough maths for everyday life. As a result, two-fifths of CBI members say that school leavers lack maths skills. In addition, the recently introduced changes to the ‘big fat’ maths GCSE exam have further knocked young people’s confidence, resulting in unprecedented levels of demand for maths support. As a result, Mathnasium Learning Centres have decided to extend the tutoring programme at their Radlett learning centre to accommodate students at GCSE level. UK Director of Mathnasium Learning Centres, Steve Felmingham commented: “The style of GCSE mathematics questions has changed dramatically in recent years. Five years ago, topics were tested in a very prescriptive manner. A pupil could learn a technique and employ it without fully understanding why it works. However, recent changes have sought to tackle this. Pupils have to really grasp the processes so that they can readily apply them, and many struggle with this. “Mathnasium’s expert instructors look at different ways of approaching the same problem to help develop independent thinking skills. Students are also taught how the rules work so that they fully understand, not just memorise, them. This can help with the new maths GCSE’s problem-solving questions, which The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) have found to be harder than the other types of question in the revised exam.” The problem has been exacerbated by a shortage 46 MARCH 2018

Botox Myths ! d e t s u b The patient furrowed her brows, clearly uneasy. “Botox? Really? I’m not sure…”
T
he irony was that the more concerned she got, the more clearly I could see how treatment with botulinum toxin (aka Botox) would benefit her. The frown lines between her eyebrows were deep, and so when she frowned, she looked unnecessarily severe. Botox, which relaxes the muscles that cause facial creases and wrinkles, would soften her look considerably. It is easily one of the top 5 cosmetic procedures in the world, used both by men and women to get rid of wrinkles and lines. It also has over 20 medical applications from preventing migraines to stopping excessive teeth grinding. Yet it is also one of the most misunderstood, with several myths persisting despite being completely untrue. Let me set the record straight on three of the most common ones I hear.
1. MYTH: Botox makes you look frozen and unnatural. You end up looking like a plastic mannequin… This usually happens when patients are given very large doses meant to last six months or longer. It’s not the approach we generally take here at Riverbanks. The aim with Botox is to soften lines, making you look younger, smoother and more relaxed – not to stop your face from moving.The key is to use small amounts of Botox relatively often. When you give subtle doses which last three or four months, the result will be completely natural. You will still be able to express surprise and smile (…in fact, you’ll do so often, because you’ll look so great!), and no one will be able to guess that you have had any work done.
2. MYTH: It hurts to get Botox. Hardly: You will experience far more pain plucking your eyebrows. That’s even truer for patients here at Riverbanks. The smaller the needle, the better it is tolerated. 60 MARCH 2018
Over the past year, we’ve started using a new type of needle which is just 1/10 the size of a blood test needle. To the best of my knowledge we are the only clinic in the UK to use them. They are so effective that often, patients ask me when I’m going to treat a certain area, and are shocked to hear I’ve already finished it. They never even noticed!
3. MYTH: When you stop using Botox, your wrinkles look worse than before. If you’ve only had one or two Botox treatments, your skin will revert to its previous condition a few weeks after the Botox has worn out. If you have been using Botox long-term, your wrinkles will start reappearing over three-to-six months. More importantly, you will look healthier and smoother than before your started the Botox. There is no evidence whatsoever that they will look worse than before you started. More likely, people who have become used to having smooth, wrinkle-free faces have simply forgotten what they looked like beforehand…. : -) Any Botox questions of your own? ow often have you spent money on a piece of seasonal clothing only to discover that after a few washes it doesn’t look half as good as it did when you first bought it? The trouble with buying cheaper items from the high street is that they often don’t have longevity so while you might feel like you’re getting a bargain at the time, usually you will end up having to repurchase a similar item time and time again. As we move towards Spring it might be time to consider some investment purchasing. Taking time to save up and purchase one item rather than spending the same amount of money on a number of cheaper alternatives will prove more sustainable and worthwhile in the long run. A good quality trench is one of those wardrobe essentials that will never go out of style and it’s a musthave staple for spring. Opt for a neutral or one colour trench rather than a pattern to ensure its longevity in your wardrobe year after year.
The ankles are one of them slimmest points on a woman’s body which is why the cropped trouser is so flattering. They are a great alternative to jeans in the daytime and skirts in the evening. t the beginning of every year, Pantone declares its Colour of the Year, and we start to wonder how we can incorporate the chosen hue into our beauty routines. NEW FIGURES SHOW MORE DIE FROM PROSTATE CANCER THAN BREAST CANCER
T
he number of men dying from prostate cancer has overtaken female deaths from breast cancer for the first time in the UK, new government figures have this week
revealed. The latest figures – taken from 2015 and announced at the end of January – show that there were 11,819 deaths from prostate cancer compared with 11,442 from breast cancer. Now, as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, which runs throughout March, Mr Aza Mohammed a Consultant Urologist at Spire Harpenden Hospital, wants to see a big rise in the number of men over 45-years-old visiting their GP for an examination that could save their life. He explained: “The most common test usually involves a ‘digital examination’. That means the doctor feeling inside the man’s back passage. It is common practice for the doctor, usually takes less than a minute, is relatively painless and could save your life!” The causes of prostate cancer, which is responsible for more than 10,000 UK deaths each year, are largely unknown but what is certain is that chances of developing it increase in men over 50 years of age. Although it is more common in men of African-Caribbean or African descent it is actually less common in men of Asian descent. Men whose father or brother has been affected by prostate cancer are also at higher risk of being

affected themselves. Mr Mohammed said: “A blood test known as a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test can be the first step to checking for cancer but this can only supply an indicator. “The problem with the PSA test is that levels can be raised by non-cancerous growths or urinary infections of the prostate. But it is better to be safe than sorry and, if necessary, a follow-up test will then allow doctors to be much more exact in their diagnosis.

Why Solid Roof Conservatories Are Legally Extensions
W
hilst double glazed conservatories and orangeries remain the most popular choice for UK homeowners glass extensions, given that in the vast majority of cases they can be designed and built so that Building Regulation Approval and Planning Permission is not required, sadly this is not the case with solid roof conservatories. Why? Because solid roof conservatories in the eyes of Local Planning Officers and Building Control Officers are actual permanent extensions, rather than an actual glass roof conservatory or orangery that if designed correctly can be designated as “temporary structures”, which means they can be exempt from needing planning approval and/or Building Regulation Approval. That said, solid roof conservatories do offer a more thermally efficient option, though obviously they do drastically reduce the amount of light in the room, compared to true glass extensions such as conservatories and orangeries. There are several modern day solid roof systems with attractive thin hard wearing tiles and insulated ceilings with down lights that comply

with the thermal requirements of the Building Regulations that offer homeowners a structure that is in effect an extension rather than a conservatory with a double glazed roof. Property owners with an existing conservatory need to be mindful of the fact that they cannot legally put a solid roof on their conservatory without first obtaining Building Regulation Approval and in many cases planning permission as well, due to its’ change of use, which permitted development may or may not cover. One of the conditions attached to Permitted Development under Clause A3 is that “the materials used in any exterior work (other than materials used in the construction of a conservatory) shall be of a similar appearance to those used in the construction of the exterior of the dwelling house”. For example the development permitted by Class A states that “a pitched roof on an extension should be clad in tiles that give a similar visual appearance to those used on the existing house roof.” According to the Glass and Glazing Federation, where a conservatory was built under planning permission “the roof finish will have been specified in the granting of planning permission and therefore a change from glass to another finish will require the change to be approved by the local planning authority.” It is wise therefore, before ordering a new solid roof for your existing conservatory or indeed buying a new conservatory with a solid roof, to

first obtain all necessary planning and Building Regulatory Approvals in writing from your local authority. Solid roof conservatories offer UK home owners an alternative “in-between” option to the more common choices of a double glazed conservatory or orangery, or indeed a full blown brick built extension with a flat or pitched roof. Solid roof conservatories cost more than most glass conservatories, as the foundations required must be at least one metre deep to a) comply with the current Building Regulations, and b) be deep enough to cope with the weight of the tiled and insulated solid roof. There are many different tile options for a modern insulated solid roof, but the two of the more popular it seems, are a thin rustic looking coated aluminium roof tile and a slightly more expensive thicker UPVC tile that better replicates the look of roof slates. Internally these modern solid roofs do permit various different types of lighting, which can be positioned in almost any location to suit, with the most common type chosen being recessed LED down lighters, as aesthetically these look the most attractive whilst taking up no space. Local Authority Building Control (LABC) is a not-for-profit membership organisation that
represents all local authority building control teams in England and Wales. The LABC to date has approved and registered as compliant, very few of the modern solid roof systems on offer in the UK marketplace. If you do select an LABC approved and registered roof, which attests to the fact it has been sufficiently well designed and insulated in order that it will be guaranteed to gain Building Regulatory Approval. Then you will have the peace of mind your new structure will not only comply, but perform thermally to the highest standards. It is important that your new solid roof conservatory is professionally designed, as you’ll want to ensure that the supporting double or triple glazed windows and doors of your new solid roof structure are sufficiently robust, and where necessary, properly reinforced to be able to support the weight of the solid aluminium roof system, along with the weight of all the roof tiles, lighting, plaster boarding, insulation and any double glazed Velux windows.
