SABINA PIEPER Like an exquisite game of hide and seek, Sabina creates art work that immediately draws you in, yet keeps you looking. The central figures - powerful women, keenly wrought - invite company, but share the space with creatures and objects from the exotic to the ordinary. These women are not set in a certain time frame but exist eternally. Her unique images invite repeated viewing; inviting and yet challenging, calling and yet creating distance. Sabina works on paper which is a medium best suited to capture the first draft of an idea, i.e. something fleeting and still progressing. Paper therefore offers a surface for an artistic process that is reflected in an immediate way, allowing change and release from rigidity. Collage, drawing and painting provide texture, layers and complexity to the surface of each composition. The exhibition runs 1-25 April, for tickets to the private view go to www.nudetincan.gallery. THE GREAT BARN at MICKLEFIELD HALL Micklefield Hall is the perfect country house wedding venue
T
he Hall itself is situated on high ground with distant views across open countryside giving the impression that you are in the depths of the country although it is within the M25. Micklefield Hall is close to both Chorleywood and Rickmansworth, between the M40 and the M1, so easy accessible. The mature gardens have developed over the generations and provide numerous photo opportunities in the rose garden, on the lawns, by the follies or at the Temple by the ornamental lake at the end of the border. This ‘Temple’ is licensed for civil ceremonies and so a favourite choice for couples to marry in the Summer months. Anna and Jamie Rankin have been holding weddings at Micklefield Hall for 18 years and have experienced weddings of all shapes and sizes. They used to have a big marquee for Summer weddings but have now converted a 16th century Tithe Barn, which stands in the gardens and provides dramatic space for ceremonies and wedding receptions. The Great Barn will seat up to 200 with a stage and dancefloor. There is a separate bar area,
“The Great Barn will seat up to 200 and has room for a stage and dancefloor” also made from oak, which is connected to the main barn. It is the exposed wooden structure, in the barn, which provides the ‘wow’ factor when everyone is seated for dinner or dancing the night away on the white dance floor. The lighting in the barn can be adjusted to create atmosphere for different times of day or occasions. Uplighters highlight the wood structure and there are chandeliers along the length of the barn which can be dimmed. With both underfloor heating and air conditioning to ensure that temperature in the barn is always just right, no expense has been spared in this award winning renovation. The terrace is an area where people sit and chat on balmy Summer evenings and this leads to the Garden Room, where there is an open log 10 MARCH 2017
fire, always lit and a favourite with romantics and smokers alike. “The food is a really important part of the wedding celebrations and everyone always remembers what the food was like”, commented Anna. “If you have delicious food and wine you
“If you have delicious food and wine you immediately relax and enjoy the party” immediately relax and enjoy the party”. To ensure high standards, Micklefield Hall have paired up with Kalm Kitchen, another husband and wife team, James and Jen Middlehurst. Their attention to detail and presentation is a perfect compliment to the yummy dishes. “If the food was not good it would reflect on us and we value our reputation highly. Also brides only get one chance to get it right and so having ‘Kalm Kitchen’, who were once again voted ‘wedding caterer of the Year’, gives reassurance and peace of mind”, said Anna. Micklefield Hall has a comprehensive wine list with a wide range of carefully selected wines. Fizz is of course important for the reception and Jamie, who selects the wines, observed that Prosecco is now the most popular because it is well priced and much better than it once was. However, interestingly, English sparkling wine is coming up fast and beating Champagne in blind tastings. Wines can be tasted and selected at the Open Day on 9 April.
The open day: 9 April The Open Day is an opportunity to see Micklefield Hall and meet suppliers for everything from flowers to sweetie carts. Anna and Jamie, their Event Managers and support staff are on hand to advise and answer questions. “We love to see the joy on the faces of brides when they come to Micklefield Hall” said Jamie. If you are interested in attending our Open Day, please contact Abby or Julie on 01923 778898 or info@micklefieldhall.com. www.micklefieldhall.com

Night-Time Skin Terrors M
ost women have a night-time routine. You have a warm, comforting, bedtime drink, pop into the bathroom, remove your make-up, cleanse, tone and moisturise, and then fall thankfully into bed for a good night’s zzzzzzz….. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? Well it would be – but unfortunately, inadvertently, many people end up harming their skin instead of helping it, because of some common mistakes with their night-time routine. For a start, the number of people using skincare devices at home at night is on the increase and at Riverbanks we’re seeing some less than optimal results. Let’s take Clarisonic Brush Heads for example. One of the current ‘must haves’, these brush heads are designed to exfoliate and deep-cleanse your skin with super-soft bristles, which move at more than 300 movements per second. (Men also use them to prep their skin for a closer shave.) While we use these in the clinic, we’re finding that patients are using them too hard - or for too long - at home! These products are designed to get past the dead layer of skin to help products penetrate, but we’re seeing more patients coming in with visible marks, holes in the skin, broken veins…. all the results of overuse or excessive use. The same goes for micro-needling devices. Micro-needing involves running tiny needles across the skin to create superficial punctures just below the surface. If used correctly, micro-needling will improve your skin tone and texture but, sadly, as with the Clarisonic Brush Heads, they can do damage if used incorrectly. Too much moisturiser is another common skin faux pas. When your skin is dry and dehydrated, it’s tempting to slather on a thick layer of cream. But it’s a total misconception that the more moisturiser you use, the more effective it will be! Many of today’s high-quality moisturisers are very concentrated and are designed to deliver results through very small amounts. When you apply too much, half the moisturiser oxidises and never gets into your skin, so those thick layers are just wasting product. More importantly, when you apply too much moisturiser, your skin can’t breathe. You are clogging up pores and actually dehydrating your skin – the exact opposite of what you want. Another no-no for night-time skincare is one that I’m sure many of you will be familiar with…In fact, a recent survey revealed that as many as a third of women sleep with their make-up on twice weekly! This means that all the environmental pollutants that have penetrated your make-up during the day, as well as all the oil and dead skin that build up during the day, are still trapped on your face all

night… Not a pleasant thought, right? Not only can this cause inflammation and bad skin, you will also generate more free radicals, which contribute to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, the structures that underpin youthful skin. The result: dry, lined and dehydrated skin and an older, tired appearance. Finally, you should also avoid facial wipe when you take your makeup off at night. As I wrote a few weeks ago, they simply don’t clean your skin properly; they just move make up and pollution around the surface. AND they’re also inclined to dehydrate your skin….. Hardly the type of result you’re looking for, is it? So make sure you’re not putting on too much moisturiser, that you always remove your make-up and that you don’t use facial wipes. Your skin will thank you for it! And if you’re using Clarisonic Brush Heads or a micro-needling device, but are unsure about what you’re doing, don’t stop. Just bring it with you the next time you’re coming into the clinic. Our wonderful aesthetician Martyna will show you exactly how to use it so that it can help – and not hurt – your skin. Warm regards,
Ravi

re rashes, itchiness, blotchiness or stinging all too common whenever you try out a new skincare product, or do they flare up with environmental changes or stress? Then it probably won’t come as news to hear your skin is classed as ‘sensitive’, and as such, it requires extra TLC. So what causes these irksome flare-ups? “There are three potential initiators,” explains Sally Penford, education manager at Dermalogica. “Allergens that may stimulate an immune response, chemicals that stimulate a nerve response, and emotional and physical stress that can also induce a nerve response.” That means you need to choose the products you use carefully, in order to avoid irritating ingredients and soothe stressed-out skin. “What’s interesting is that besides common allergens like artificial fragrance, anyone can become sensitized to anything at any time,” Penford adds, which is why it’s useful for everyone to know the common causes. We asked three experts how to ensure a daily skincare regime that’s effective but not aggravating... 50 MARCH 2017
KIND CLEANSERS Whatever the product, there is, unfortunately, a whole laundry list of potentially harmful ingredients it’s best to steer clear of. “As a general rule for sensitive skin, I’d avoid sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate, soap, AHAs/BHAs, salicylic acid, high fragrance, colourants and alcohol,” says Kendra Flockhart, education executive at Darphin Paris. “Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is commonly used in skincare, particularly in cleansing products, due to its lathering effect. However, I’m of the option that you should avoid harsh chemicals such as SLS, as they strip the skin of its goodness,” agrees Dr Justine Hextall, dermatologist on behalf of The Harley Medical Group. “Alcohol strips the skin of its natural oils and leads to a loss of water in the skin’s upper layer. Use water-based products instead. For reactive skin, I prefer to recommend a threein-one product, such as Darphin Azahar Micellar Water, as this reduces the [number of] products/ ingredients being introduced to skin, and there’s no need for water, which can also lead to skin

Is epilation too harsh for sensitive skin? Emily Wright plucks up the courage to try Braun’s new multipurpose device...
“The Braun Silk-Epil 9 can be used wet or dry, so I first tried it out while having a soak in the tub. I was prepared for epilation to smart, because I have quite sensitive skin, and while I did wince as the first few leg hairs were tweezed out at the root by the revolving head, overall, it wasn’t too painful, and as I got the hang of it, I got a lot faster. My follicles were a little red after but they soon calmed down, and I was impressed with the long-lasting effects compared to shaving. The device also comes with a range of interchangeable attachments - I used the sensitive exfoliation brush on my legs, which helps prevent ingrown hairs (I haven’t seen any yet), and the deep exfoliation brush is great for a weekly thorough face cleanse.” Braun Silk-Epil 9 SkinSpa 4 in 1 Wet and Dry Epilator, £179.99, Argos (www.argos.co.uk)

We believe that a good night’s sleep is more easily achievable if your bedroom environment is carefully considered. Here are our top ten tips to help you create the perfect bedroom that will help you fall asleep quickly and stay asleep throughout the night. We believe setting out your bedroom is a key element for getting a good night’s sleep. Here are our top ten tips to create the perfect bedroom that will help you fall asleep quickly and stay asleep throughout the night.
1. Total darkness Try to eliminate all light from your bedroom. To test ‘light pollution’, switch all the lights off, allow a few minutes for your eyes to adjust, and then look for areas and items where you can see light. Eliminate all light leakage; blackout blinds are great, especially in summer, a towel under the door can help too if light is coming under. Turn your alarm away from you or swap for a dawn simulator. If all else fails, get a high-quality sleep mask.
2. Keep it cool A decrease in temperature as well as a decrease in light is a natural cue that it is time for sleep. The best bedroom temperature for you to get to sleep easily is between 15.5 and 20 degrees Centigrade. Too far above or below this range, makes it more difficult to get to sleep. If your partner prefers it warmer, buy a cooling pad for your side or an electric blanket for their side. In the summer keep
your room cool by closing your blinds & curtains during the day and have a fan or open window blowing through a damp sheet at night. You could even put your sheets/pyjamas in the fridge before using them if it’s especially hot.
3. De-clutter De-clutter your bedroom and keep it clean and tidy to create a calm, organised and relaxed bedroom to sleep in.
4. Switch it off Remove all technology, including your TV, mobile phone and tablet. This prevents you from bringing work into your bedroom, reinforcing to your brain that the bedroom is a space reserved for sleep (and sex) only.
5. Relaxing scents Wrong smells can stop us from getting to sleep easily. Lavender oil helps get you into a deeper sleep. Plants can also help the air quality.
6. Cleanliness is key Clean your bedroom regularly this improves your sleep and keeps you healthier, by ridding your room of dust, pet hair, pollen and bacteria. This reduces the risk of asthmatic attacks and allergic responses.
7. Fresh thinking Change your sheets at least every two weeks. Washing your bed linen in hot water, keeping your bed crisp and fresh helps you get to sleep more easily, and reducing dust mite risk at the same time.
8. Calming tones Use calming pastel colours in the bedroom and avoid red, which will keep you awake.
9. Reduce outside noise Tape over gaps in windows or double-glaze them to reduce street noise. Use earplugs or a white noise generator such as SleepPhones if you can’t reduce outside noise or your partner snores loudly.
10. Size matters Get as big a bed as you can, especially if you sleep with a partner. Super king size gives you twice the size of a single bed, whereas a double bed only gives you the same room as a baby in a cot. More space to sleep in means you get a better, less disturbed night’s sleep as a couple. 27-29 High Street, St Albans, AL3 4EH. 020 7693 8988. www.warrenevans.com MARCH 2017 67

SPRING IS IN THE AIR SO IT’S TIME TO MAKE THE CALL TO BEVERLEY
Just by talking to Beverley you can see how much she loves her profession.
W
ith a career now spanning over 30 years, Beverley first started in Interior Design with the prestigious Colefax & Fowler. She went on to establish her own business and is a highly respected member of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID). Being a member of the BIID means that Beverley is qualified by training and experience to plan and supervise the design and execution of interiors and furnishings - and to organise the various arts and crafts essential to their completion. In order to join the BIID, an applicant must fulfil stringent entry requirements. This means not only demonstrating artistic ability, but also proving an established business of several years’ standing and operating in a professional manner. Most of the work that Beverley has undertaken has been in private homes, throughout the UK and worldwide. The styles have been as diverse, ranging from contemporary apartments in the city to traditional country homes. She admits that she can indulge her passion for traditional design and ultra modern minimalism, without losing sight of the fact that her clients’ homes are an extension of their personalities. She recognises that she is called upon to interpret their wishes and eliminate any potential stress and trauma that can occur when clients attempt to handle projects on their own. Pivotal to Beverley’s success is the relationship she forms with her clients. She is very aware that the relationship between an interior designer and her client often becomes one of the most personal outside the immediate family. Whether you choose a designer by recommendation, local research or a follow-up having seen the result of their work, the rapport with your designer establishes itself very 68 MARCH 2017
quickly. This client/designer empathy is intrinsic to the success of any project. Far from indicating a lack of taste or initiative, using an interior designer can help you to realise your own ideas for more effectively and quickly than going it alone. As Beverley explains: “A designer is also significantly less expensive than you might imagine, saving you from making those costly mistakes.” Beverley never imposes her ideas upon her clients. Instead, she will devote the time carefully listening to their likes and dislikes and then works with them to create an environment that is truly ‘theirs’. Her ability to listen ensures that she interprets clients’ requirements effectively and efficiently. By using an interior designer of Beverley’s standing, you can be assured that the re-design of your home will be an enjoyable experience. And if the need is to extend the service to the garden and surrounding areas, you can be completely confident that the same level of expertise will be available for you. So if you want to bring a breath of fresh air into your home this spring, just ring Beverley on 01923 857029 or visit her website www.beverleybarnett.co.uk

Saving Energy in Your Home, Saves Money and the Environment “Much work has been done in the last ten years to bring new, higher standards to the thermal efficiency of windows and doors”
N
owadays we are all constantly being encouraged to do our ‘bit’ for the environment and are accustomed to the energy efficiency labels that are on all the white appliances that we buy, as these indicate the extent to which the product we are purchasing is energy efficient, and therefore how environmentally friendly it is. With this in mind most of us, given the option, will probably opt for the more energy efficient rated models secure in the knowledge that we are doing our ‘bit’ for the environment and also probably saving money on our electricity and gas bills. Many years ago now, the UK Government turned their attention to the fabric of our houses and developed a system whereby homeowners could choose energy efficient products for other areas of their home as well. Much work has been done in the last ten years to bring new, higher standards to the thermal efficiency of windows and doors and this has now finally evolved to the point where
70 MARCH 2017
the windows and doors you choose should carry the highly recognisable and understandable energy efficiency labels called Window Energy Rating. The minimum standard for replacement windows since 1st October 2010 when the Building Regulations were tightened up is a Window Energy Rating (WER) of “C” or a minimum combined U value of 1.6W/m2K. Ever since then UK property owners and installers are required by law to fit these highly thermally efficient windows when buying new ones (i.e. if replacing existing windows or fitting new ones to an extension etc), as without these energy saving products being installed, FENSA will not issue a FENSA certificate to prove compliance. According to the Energy Saving Trust, nearly a fifth of heat lost from un-insulated homes is through the windows. Investing in one of Hazlemere’s Eco-friendly window systems makes a significant contribution to reducing this which in turn helps to keep homes warmer. Using less
energy to keep you warm not only reduces your carbon emissions but saves you money as well. For example, Hazlemere’s UPVC triple glazed windows achieve an A++ rating, having a combined U-Value of 0.99 W/m2K. Even Hazlemere standard double glazed UPVC windows have an A+ energy rating and a combined U-Value of 1.3 W/m2K. However, achieving energy efficiency as a window is only part of the story if homeowners are concerned with the overall environmental impact of what they buy as well as saving money. Hazlemere’s aluminium Eco-friendly windows are obviously made from aluminium which has a very positive environmental story all of its own. Apart from having a long life in use, once it reaches the end of its life it can be infinitely recycled. Recycling aluminium uses just 5% of the energy needed to produce the original material plus the finished product has all of the same qualities as the original as well which means it can be recycled time and time again. inter may be bleak and dark, but it’s the perfect time to switch on to the power of lighting and illuminate rooms with everything, from razzle-dazzle new effects to simple bulbs which shine a spotlight on a feature, or even change a mood. “Lighting really matters in a home and can literally transform it,” promises George Clarke, architect and TV’s popular property presenter of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and The Restoration Man. “I’ve seen great buildings ruined by bad lighting schemes, and great lighting improve bad buildings. It can truly make that much difference. What’s fantastic these days, is that there are affordable, effective ways of personally tailoring lighting schemes, using technology like smart phones and tablets, which a decade ago, would have costs thousands.” Clarke, who’s currently working with Philips lighting, believes good lighting doesn’t just have a visual effect, but can also help improve our wellbeing. “Artificial light can now mimic natural light and light systems can be programmed to suit our body rhythms. Replicating a soothing sunset glow in the evening can help people relax and encourage relaxation and sleep, while gradually increasing light levels in the morning to mimic sunrise can encourage us to wake in a more gentle fashion. Lights conjuring the effect of natural sunlight indoors may offset the negative effect of a grey day outside. There’s almost no limit to what can be achieved.”
LIGHT BULB MOMENTS Recent research by B&Q revealed that 85% of us have no idea which bulb brightness is best to suit a task or set a mood. Clarke gives his guide to LED lighting... “In general, people are scared by lighting and confused by all the terminology. That’s a real shame because LED lighting is so versatile these 72 MARCH 2017

“Recent research by B&Q revealed that 85% of us have no idea which bulb brightness is best to suit a task or set a mood” days. For instance, there’s a misconception that it’s a cold light, but the key to success is selecting the right colour temperature of the bulb, which is measured in a unit called a kelvin (k),” he explains. “Bulbs with higher kelvin value create a cooler, crisp white light (4000k) which are suitable for practical areas, like a kitchen or bathroom, while those with a lower kelvin value (3000k) produce a warmer white light more appropriate for living rooms. “If you want to easily change the ambience, there are innovations like a Philips Scene Switch LED light bulb (£9.99, Amazon) which allows you to use your light switch to flick between three different light levels, from bright to natural to a soft warm light. This bulb can be used on an existing light [simply using your normal light switch to change between settings] and removes the need for a dimmer.” SEE THE LIGHTS: Playing with light has never

been easier thanks to advances in technology, such as a Philips Hue White and Colour Ambiance Wireless Lighting LED Starter Kit, £149.95 from John Lewis or Amazon, a new system allowing you to customise your lighting using a smartphone or tablet. After installing the Hue bulbs into existing light fittings and downloading the Hue app, you can access a wide range of functions, including settings for brightness, timings including a ‘go to sleep’ function with effects to encourage calm and relaxation, and colour changes.
LIGHT TOUCH “A common mistake people make is only having light coming from one source - for instance, simply having a ceiling light. In reality, good lighting is achieved by creating different layers of light which conjure variation, texture and atmosphere,” says Clarke. “Clever accent lighting - wall sconces, floodlights, recessed lights or track lighting - can dramatically change a space and highlight key areas or architectural features. Even just hanging an adjustable pendant light over a dining table will define the space and make it feel more intimate. “Coloured lighting is also a fantastic way to add a ‘wow’ factor, especially if the light source is hidden. Use coloured light strips above kitchen units, but, to get the maximum effect, keep the background a neutral white as a contrast.” SEE THE LIGHTS: Nothing makes more of a statement than an intricately designed chandelier and, for a modern approach, fit one in an unexpected place like a kitchen or a bedroom. Debenhams has an impressive lighting collection with the added bonus that many pieces are currently reduced online. A Scarlett Black Chandelier, with smoke and clear glass crystal strands, is reduced from £395 to £316, and a Penelope Pendant Ceiling Light, featuring layers of smoke glass cylinders, reduced from £320 to £256. Cluster lights are ultrafashionable and its contemporary Harrison Cluster Ceiling Light is down from £150 to £120. Very’s Glass Cloche Ceiling Light, £99, blends modern with traditional style, with a clear glass dome showcasing a cluster of light strings, and another winner in its collection is a Forest Pendant with etched tree design, £19. Dar Lighting, which has nationwide stockists, has super pendant lights and I particularly like its Tower Cluster Pendant, RRP £118.80. Pared-back designs allow materials to shine and B&Q’s Jonas Wire Copper Pendant Ceiling Light, £47, is a good example of that approach. Urban Cottage Industries, specialists in vintage and industrial lighting, which offers bespoke lights, has a funky Green Large Balloon Light Bulb Cage, from £55.44. Experiment with coloured light with a Philips Hue LED Iris Light Colour Changing Mood Smart Lamp, £70, B&Q.

mood, atmosphere or focus it to better suit a specific activity,” says Clarke. “A good scheme allows you to instantly reinvent a space - or, in increasingly popular open-plan living rooms, the areas within the space - without having to change a room’s overall layout. “There are so many ways to draw the eye. Bare bulbs are very much on-trend, as are metallic finishes and sculptural shapes. Table lights are a really good way to partition areas in a room, so a light on a side table behind a sofa will create a visual break in an open plan room. “Do bear in mind colours and surfaces reflect and absorb light in different ways. Shiny materials like satin, silk and metal bounce light around a room, whereas darker, denser materials, such as wool and velvet, soak up light.” SEE THE LIGHTS: Show off your style credentials with lights inspired by the gaudy stars of the fairground. The fun Marquee collection at Debenhams has a selection: Flamingo Light, £150; Burst Star and Rainbow Floor Lights, both currently reduced online from £150 to £120; Lightening Bolt Floor Light, down from £95 to £76, and Cactus Floor Light, currently reduced from £125 to £100. Bag bargain table lamps at Very: Caesar Table Lamp, £29; copper-base Acropolis Table Lamp, currently reduced from £27 to £20.70, and a pretty pair of Touch Lamps, only £19. Laura Ashley’s Odiham Antique Brass Desk Lamp, currently £87.50, down from £125, is a classic and its matching Sphere Pendant Light is £122.50. Adjustable lights are superuseful and Marks & Spencer’s Loft Adjustable Task Floor Lamp, £99, has a matching Table Lamp, £45.

Exposed brick walls, stripped-back floorboards, furniture made from hard-wearing materials such as enamel, aluminium and oak, evoke an edgy, industrial feel that complements monochrome tones and graphic prints. Hipster and contemporary, cast iron dishes, metal work and wire storage will suit the inventory.

A SHORE THING
Creating a tropical paradise at home is far quicker - and less stressful and expensive - than booking a long-haul flight. Think lush palms and plants galore - whether the real thing (or you can get some great, zero-maintenance fake ones these days!) in pots around rooms, or in designs on wallpaper, fabrics or in
You don’t need to book a seaside holiday to be near the coast, when you can introduce a few nauticalthemed pieces and a colour palette of blues and corals. Chambray stripes, fish motifs on chinaware, anything with an anchor and rattan lanterns will all flow easily together. This timeless look never loses its charm. 78 MARCH 2017

The ethereal look taps into our current love affair with all things hygge (in other words; cosy, comforting and feel-good) while also being light, cool and refreshing. Think tactile textures, pastel hues and a mix of patterns that are elegant and graceful. Using premium materials, such as marble and brass, quilted throws, embroidered cushions and a mix of tableware patterns completes the look.
Travel has never been more popular - and, naturally, it’s influencing our interiors, too. With a mix of Asian, Indian and South American treatments, a vibrant colour palette, embroidered floor cushions, pom-pom-adorned throws, ‘a little something’ from a souk, arts and crafts from various cultures and an ethnic rug can hint at Zanzibar style with a modern, bohemian take. Inspiring, interesting and you can add ‘souvenirs’ as daily reminders of amazing trips you’ve enjoyed.

Declutter by design words: Sam Wylie-Harris, Press Association

e’ve all heard the saying, ‘tidy house, tidy mind’, and there’s a lot of truth in it. Maximising your space and ridding yourself from all that clutter can be far more positive than you might think. Not only can hoarding cause us anxiety and stress, but freeing your home of unwanted stuff means you can actually display the things you really love, creating a style statement with a dual purpose. But where to start?
HALL OF FAME First impressions count, and the hallway offers a clear vision of what the rest of the house may look like. Storage benches are the perfect way to declutter your hall, and baskets grouped together in varying sizes can be functional as well as fun. And don’t pooh-pooh the humble shoe rack; it can take care of wellies, trainers and everyday shoes, and you can always turn one of the shelves into a makeshift wine rack!
SHOW KITCHEN “Even if you have ample storage space in your kitchen, it’s important it’s well organised, so you can really make the most of it,” says Terry Brown, commercial director at Benchmarx Kitchens. “You can ensure you maximise usable space by choosing different storage solutions that work best for your needs. If you’re keen to have more space for food items, why not incorporate a larder/corner pantry unit into your scheme, which will ensure that all of the available space is used?” Also, don’t feel you have to be traditional. Once you’ve ditched any chipped crockery, glassware and old cutlery, clever ideas - such as a step ladder or open shelving units - can be used to display favourite pieces, chinaware, chopping blocks, storage containers and even cookware. 82 MARCH 2017
LOVE YOUR LIVING ROOM This is the place that needs to work extra hard, especially if you want to keep it clutter-free, as it’s where we relax, watch TV, entertain - and display all those precious family photos, paintings, books and pretty knick-knacks. Back in vogue, a dresser or cabinet can not only mask a TV screen when not in use (and unsightly cables), but provide extra storage space for possessions you can’t bear to part with. Another must-have, a butler’s tray (with a removable tray) is a modern yet timeless way to serve cocktails, canapes or a TV supper, and with a wide table top it can double up as a sideboard. And if you’re not sure where to store those glossy magazines, winter throws and small soft furnishings, a footstool with hidden storage, covered in a favourite fabric, could become a key feature (it’ll also come in handy for putting your feet up after all this tidying!).
BEDROOM BLISS Taking time to create a clutter-free boudoir, with the focus on a few crucial items - like crisp bed linen, a tidy dressing table, fresh flowers and a radio instead of a TV - will look AND feel relaxing, and therefore help you get a decent night’s sleep, too. An untidy wardrobe, strewn with clothes that should have gone to the charity shop years ago, might mean you start the day with unnecessary stress as well. But with a little thought, you can make the most of your accessories, while hiding more mundane items behind closet doors. Your colour scheme could add a sense of calm, too. “Cool tones of soft greys and neutral light-grain wood are key bedroom colour palettes this year. Our stunning new colour combinations, such as cashmere, stone and satin white, also work with this trend perfectly to create a tranquil space,” says Rachal Hutcheson, design expert. Along with calming those wardrobe woes with fitted units, an ottoman bed means heaps more storage to stow things away, without taking up extra space in the room.
