n celebration of The Ivy St Albans Brasserie’s first birthday this spring, the restaurant hosted an exclusive evening of cocktails and canapés in the heart of the city. Todd in the Hole 2019, a festival born out of a love for the Hertfordshire countryside, good food, country shows and rockin’ live music. QIPCO King George Weekend at Ascot Racecourse

T

he patronage of 12 monarchs since 1711 has helped make Ascot one of the world’s best-loved racecourses and it remains a pillar of British sporting and social culture. Welcoming over 630,000 guests each year, Ascot’s stature, reputation and famed celebration of occasion is admired the world over. Famously known for its Royal Meeting held over five days in mid-June, Ascot is often described as the jewel in the crown of horse racing. In addition to Royal Ascot, the racecourse also hosts an additional 21 racedays across both the Flat and Jumps seasons - each having a unique character. Following the excitement of Royal Ascot in June, the QIPCO King George Weekend, held over the last weekend in July, is the most important, historic and glamorous raceday on Ascot’s calendar. EPICUREAN DELIGHT: THE CHAMPAGNE CHEST By Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

T

he House of Rolls-Royce is delighted to present the Champagne Chest, the latest addition to the Rolls-Royce accessory portfolio. Rich in the understanding of true luxury and epicurean pleasure, the RollsRoyce Bespoke Design Collective envisioned an accoutrement intended to delight, suitable for the most extravagant of environments from a superyacht to the terrace of a private residence. The Champagne Chest is distinguishably RollsRoyce, embodying the meticulous attention-to-detail and commitment to remarkable handcraftsmanship, characteristic of the marque. The chassis, made from machined aluminium and carbon fibre, is swathed in Natural Grain black leather embossed with the enigmatic Spirit of Ecstasy and flanked by Tudor Oak wood, materials found in the marque’s motor cars. At the touch of a button a sense of theatre ensues as the case opens to reveal the finery of a perfectly appointed Champagne set for four guests. The exterior lid metamorphoses into a beautiful serving tray made of Tudor Oak wood with a lasercut stainless steel inlay. Four cotton napkins with finely embroidered ‘RR’ monograms are discreetly hidden under the lacquered Tudor Oak table. The Chest is illuminated from the central bay, presenting four hand-blown crystal champagne flutes arranged to evoke memories of a V12 engine. The glass of each is masterfully joined by a polished aluminium base, etched with the ‘RR’ monogram. The sides of the Chest automatically deploy, revealing two hammocks adorned in ‘Hotspur Red’ Rolls-Royce leather to cradle one’s preferred ensemble of either champagne, caviar or canapés. Thermal Champagne Coolers made from black anodised aluminium and carbon fibre each proudly bear the ‘RR’ emblem, ensure the champagne is maintained at the optimum temperature. A caviar configuration is available, whereby two thermal caviar caissons, each accommodating a 30g tin, are complemented by two blini caissons

proving an irresistible accompaniment to chilled champagne. An additional arrangement of three porcelain bowls concealed in a matching thermal capsule can be specified should patrons wish to present their guests with an alternative accompaniment to champagne. ear 12 and going strong! There’s no stopping the enthusiasm of 1000’s of people who flock to the beautiful beaches of Sandbanks, Dorset, UK on the second weekend in July. What has become known as “The Sandbanks Weekend” or “The Sandbanks Festival in the sporting and social calendar of the South Coast of England continues to attract the crowds year after year. Curiosity brought people to watch high quality beach polo at Sandbanks for the first few years but since then the parties, hospitality, fashion shows and now a beach rugby element, not to mention the Sandfest music festival on the Sunday, has kept the audience guessing and wanting more. The heavily watered beach arena provides a firm playing surface, and when surrounded by elaborate marquees, staging and grandstands The British Beach Polo Championships, otherwise known as 22 JUNE 2019

Stressbusting Surrey garden collaboration wins coveted silver-gilt medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

elebrating success at the UK’s most anticipated horticultural event of the year, the Silent Pool Gin Garden wins a prestigious silver-gilt medal at the Royal Horticultural Society’s world-famous Chelsea Flower Show 2019, where innovative design and horticultural expertise combine to showcase some of the country’s most exciting and inventive gardening feats. Blending the passion and expertise of David Neale of Neale Richards Garden Design and University of Surrey academics Professor Tony Myatt and Professor Richard Murphy, the Silent Pool Gin Garden takes inspiration from plant technologies and the greening of inner city spaces. Born from the vision to create a space that absorbs stress through scent, sound and sight, the garden also invites you to consider the making of gin, the inventive use of recycled materials and the power of plants to create energy. Many of the botanicals used in the making of gin are represented in the planting and symbolised by a single juniper bonsai tree given its own floating shelf on the garden wall, while a striking hanging seat gives a nod to the distillery’s copper stills. A Perspex teal water wall etched with Silent Pool’s signature botanicals forms part of the garden’s feature aqueduct. Director of the Centre for Environment and Sustainability Professor Richard Murphy said: “After

careful planning and exploring of new sustainable technologies, we are very excited to present our united efforts at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this week. “With the help of engineering students from SurreyEARS (the electronics and amateur radio student society), intricately installed sensors orchestrate Tony Myatt’s natural soundscape, triggering sounds of birds and insects in response to environmental changes in humidity, light, temperature and wind. This, coupled with live electricity generation from the plant microbial fuel cells, has been a brilliant way to engage, inform and intrigue visitors, encouraging an appreciation for plants and the significant role they can play in wellbeing and sustainability.” Ian McCulloch, Founder and Director of Silent Pool Distillers said: “By collaborating with NRGD and the University of Surrey, we were able to create a garden that truly engaged, informed and intrigued visitors in appreciating the critical role of plants to their own well-being, as well as the futures of others. enley Festival, the UK’s most glamorous intimate festival, and winner of Headline Performance of the Year in 2016 returns to its spectacular setting on the riverbank in Henley-on-Thames from 10th-14th July 2019. As the UK’s only black-tie festival, Henley Festival is glamour personified, offering Michelin starred food, award winning comedians, critically acclaimed artists and the biggest names in popular, world, jazz and classical music. Many festival goers arrive by boat, and the green lawns of the festival are transformed into a Great Gatsby vision, as black tie clad revellers spill across the festival site, champagne in hand, while fireworks explode overhead. Established 37 years ago as a classical music charity event, Henley Festival continues to be run on a not for profit basis supporting charitable projects at both a national and local level. This year grants from the festival will go to two charities. Dedicated to supporting young people with depression, and encouraging discussions around mental health, the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust was set up in memory of a young man who took his own life whilst suffering from depression. The Teenage Wilderness Trust supports students who find it difficult to engage with mainstream education by offering reengagement courses using bush craft, wilderness learning techniques and practical life skills to encourage students to get back into learning. .

WIZARDING IN WATFORD STEP INTO GRINGOTTS WIZARDING BANK at WARNER BROS. STUDIO TOUR LONDON – THE MAKING OF HARRY POTTER

or the first time ever at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, visitors can enter the set of Gringotts Wizarding Bank allowing fans to walk through the main banking hall just like Harry, Ron and Hermione. Lined by towering marble pillars, the grand banking hall is decorated with magnificent crystal chandeliers and finished with real brass leaf. Inkwells, quills, ledgers and piles of Galleons, Sickles and Knuts complete the goblin tellers’ desks as seen on screen. From Harry Potter first discovering Diagon Alley to the famous trio escaping on a Ukrainian Ironbelly dragon in their quest for a Horcrux, Gringotts Wizarding Bank played an important role in the Harry Potter film series. Officially opened on Saturday 6th April as a permanent addition, the 16,500sqft Gringotts Wizarding Bank expansion is the Studio Tour’s biggest

addition to date and has been designed and built by many of the original crew members who worked on the hugely successful magical film series including Oscar® and BAFTA winning Production Designer Stuart Craig, Construction Manager Paul Hayes and Head Propmaker Pierre Bohanna. The Propmaking Department, led by Pierre Bohanna, created over 210,000 coins for the final two films alone. The Gringotts Wizarding Bank is famously run by goblins and the expansion starts with a gallery dedicated to the prosthetics, costume and artistry that brought the creatures to life. Visitors will discover those belonging to Bogrod, Griphook and many other goblin bankers. Each prosthetic mask took weeks to create, with every hair individually inserted and veins painstakingly painted by hand. It took four hours to transform actor Warwick Davis into Griphook in the films which included him wearing black contact lenses and dentures with extremely sharp teeth to complete the goblin look.

Lestrange Vault Once through the banking hall of Gringotts, visitors will enter the depths of the Lestrange Vault used to store the treasures of Bellatrix Lestrange including the Sword of Gryffindor and Helga Hufflepuff ’s Cup, one of Voldemort’s many Horcruxes. During filming 38,000 pieces of rubberised treasure were created for the Lestrange vault including 7,014 Hufflepuff Cups. Here, visitors can try out a unique photo opportunity allowing them to step inside the Lestrange vault and surround themselves with treasure.

Destroyed Gringotts As visitors leave the vaults they will enter the final set of the new expansion – destroyed Gringotts. Harry Potter fans will remember the dramatic scene in the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 where the Ukrainian Ironbelly Dragon thrashes through the banking hall smashing chandeliers and wrecking columns. Visitors will walk through the original set and experience the scene come to life using digital technology to recreate the dragon, as it was in the film. Starting with the sound of clanking chains, the dragon will slowly emerge from a dark mist, finally coming in to full view, breathing fire, before retreating into the darkness. In addition to the Gringotts Wizarding Bank expansion, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London has unveiled an all-new 17,000sq ft lobby and café serving foosd and drink inspired by the Wizarding World and can seat up to 500 people. THE DESIGN: Mandeville Interiors, were appointed to manage the interior design of Lawn House. They took inspiration from John Tradescant the Elder who was an English naturalist, gardener, collector and traveller. He began his career as head gardener to Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury at Hatfield House. In 1611, at Robert Cecil’s behest, John Tradescant the elder travelled through the Low Countries & Flanders to Paris, buying trees, flowering shrubs, vines, & bulbs for the new gardens at Hatfield. life with the interior of each room carefully crafted. “Lawn House is a beautiful building with so many traditional features that bring the rooms to life. We enjoyed the challenge of working with the Estate’s existing furniture and upholstery, whilst sourcing new pieces that would sit alongside, seamlessly. The bathrooms are clean and modern but have traditional Victorian tiling and detailing in every one. or the Spring/Summer 2019, the Emporio Armani junior collection increasingly takes on the brand’s stylistic codes, with shapes, cuts and apparel adapted for kids in a new, original Mini Me line. The logo is present across the board and can be found in maxi and all-over versions on boys’ sweatshirts, T-shirts and accessories – as well as on girls’ clothes – re-imagined in a playful design for children. Benefits of the independent school

ith options ranging from boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a school to suit each and every child. In addition, small class sizes make staff members more readily available for extra help or to further challenge individual students.

Parental involvement Private schools are built around open communication between parents and administration, and they make it a priority to involve parents in the community. From frequent parent-teacher meetings, social events such as parent breakfasts and family camping weekends, and the participation of parent committees in fundraising initiatives, families become an integral part of the child’s education. This common ground also helps strengthen parent-child relationships.

While academics remain the priority for most private schools, many also place a strong focus on a wellrounded education and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, arts or clubs. A safe environment Private schools have reputations for maintaining high standards for discipline and respect. Lower staff-tostudent ratios allow for more effective observation and control of school grounds. The strong sense of community found in private schools also discourages dangerous behaviour. In the Fraser Institute study, around 72 per cent of parents surveyed with children in the private school system strongly agreed that their school was safe, which greatly improves the quality of the child’s educational experience and achievement. The discipline they learn also improves their rates for success in post-secondary education when they are in control of their class attendance and achievement.

f you have an interest in what you wear, in style and in fashion then you’ve likely spent a fair amount of time reading magazine’s, online articles or newspapers full styling tips, street style observations, and educated thoughts about the world of celebrity dressing. It can all be a bit overwhelming at times, and it can be hard to know the right things to do all the time. The good news, though, is that sometimes things are much simpler than all that. There are a few general style guidelines that some of the world’s smartest, sharpest, and most stylish women stick to. I tend to use these rules in general for myself and also with clients. They are so universally wise and

Buy timeless clothing that will always be in style to underpin your wardrobe Think indigo denim, shirts, sweaters, blouses, stripe jersey tops, good knitwear, converse trainers, a good jacket, brogues or flats and a leather jacket. These items have always been in style and always will be – how you wear them may change but the items themselves will always be a safe bet. Jeans might be turned up one year & not the next but they’ll always be a wardrobe staple. This doesn’t mean that you should always play it safe – colour, pattern and texture play an important role in bringing these items to life. Also, with these items, always remember the next rule... 3. Buy the best quality you can afford The best quality items fit better, last longer and some cases will get better with age. Don’t be tempted by cheaper, throwaway items – 9 times out of 10 they don’t last. Invest in key items that you know you’ll get value from such as shoes and denim. Whereas a less expensive, on-trend pair of jeans is fine to grab every now and then, you really need quality denim in your wardrobe to last you from year to year. 4. Buy clothing that’s flexible Build your wardrobe around key items that are versatile and can be worn a number of different ways. A great example is a denim shirt. Worn with converse trainers, over a simple striped jersey dress and you’ve got a great, timeless casual look. hat is happiness for you? What is happiness in any sphere? Well, it’s a passing emotion in my opinion. If someone tells you the best joke in the world, how long can you laugh for? If something sad happens, how happy can you remain then? I prefer to use the word ‘contentment’ and then if something sad happens you can be content to be transiently sad. I think it’s pretty normal and healthy for us to feel all of our emotions and yet feel generally contented at the same time. Life can be hard and ironically accepting that life is sometimes difficult can prepare us to remain contented or congruently balanced. • Living mindfully and taking notice of people, places and tasks and being in the moment with those situations will ease regrets and worries. • Humans are altruistic and have an urge and a reward mechanism to give and do something for someone other than for themselves, so give. • Discovering and getting engrossed in stimulating challenging activities, whilst setting and meeting objectives and ambitions, satiates our innate enhancing drive. My research and experience suggest that much of happiness or contentment is actually within our control and that life satisfaction has much to do with: • Accepting who you are and acknowledging that you’re ok. • Being resilient • Trying to see positives in emotional situations and changing bad habits into good habits. • Having physical, mental and psychological challenges Aiming to be personally measured, grounded and at ease while becoming more self-aware and cutting away façade and pretence can move people forward in an individual manner enabling individuals to achieve their very own unique contented balance. t Hawk Kitchens & Bathrooms, we pride ourselves on designing kitchens and bathrooms around you and your lifestyle and this is one of our most interesting to date. Situated within a Grade II listed Victorian manor house, this contemporary glass box extension was designed to contrast with the existing building and to house an equally contemporary kitchen‌and a sports car. The family enjoyed entertaining and sports cars were a big part of their life so the space had to reflect this. With an obvious love for bold, exciting and innovative design we specified a handleless German kitchen which ran flush with the wall and state of the art Siemens appliances, including a coffee machine and vacuum drawer, which appealed to the clients love for functionalism with design. A colourful sports car from their car collection would be housed within the room at any one time so neutral colours were used throughout to allow the cars to stand out and become the focus of the room. The seamless appearance and linear look of the cabinetry also reflected the contemporary architecture of the space too. The island consisted of three different zones for multi-use functionality; the main L shape for cooking, a raised bar area, complete with champagne tough, for entertaining and a lower seating area for dining, enhanced with sleek curved worktops. The abstract shape of this island along with its mix of finishes and textures on the worktops was designed to reflect the curves and angles within the sports cars. The dark grey worktops also tied in with the window frames, bringing the whole space together. Many sports car makers have teamed up with kitchen designers in the past and it is clear to see there is a link between the sleek shapes, form and functionality in both.
