Hertfordshire Festival of Music Our 2018 Festival explores the special way in which music can take us away from the ordinary and often all too ‘real’ world into what Shakespeare called ‘something rich and strange’. With the inspiring presence of Stephen Hough we’ll experience the transformative sphere of his imagination in three remarkable ways: as pianist, composer and painter. A sense of make-belief pervades the entire programme of events during our week-long Festival from Stephen Hough’s solo and ensemble performances with the renowned Alisdair Hogarth and the Prince Consort vocal ensemble through to Tasmin Little and John Lenehan’s closing recital. The secret is out!
There is a new hot spot in St Albans, The Secret Garden at Bill’s
I
was lucky enough to be invited to the Launch evening for the Secret Garden and it really was a beautiful evening! Bill’s have transformed a plain outside area to a stunning, ultra chic, quiet hideaway. It takes you away from the busy hustle and bustle of the main high street in St Albans and almost has a Chelsea/ London vibe. The garden is decorated with flowers and plants which make it look and smell like a complete garden. There are fairy lights, shabby chic décor and beautifully hung mirrors around the area which makes it feel cosy and inviting. The garden has seating and tables for up to 24 people and is super comfortable – there are even blankets in wicker baskets if you get a touch chilly in the evening. The staff are happy to provide table service and with Bill’s new cocktail menu you are spoilt for choice. I can highly recommend the English Garden for a refreshing cocktail with fresh fruit. Why not enjoy this setting on a hot day, as this
12 JUNE 2018
summer is set to be a scorcher? The new garden comes hot on the tail of the relaunch of Bill’s St Albans restaurant earlier this year which now offers more intimate dining areas, a fun open bar area and plenty of room for everyone with show-stopping interiors, to enjoy some of the new dishes on the menu. Enjoy light summer dishes including a warm chicken, avocado and parmesan salad and seabass with avocado salsa. Alternatively, for something more indulgent, try the pan fried chicken with truffle and wild mushrooms. With new daily dinner specials throughout the week, there’s something for everyone. Weekend brunch is always popular at Bill’s and now there’s more exciting options than ever to tempt your tastebuds, including eggs royale with chips, Bill’s Brunch and a variety of sharing plates including halloumi, health and raw plates. Call ahead to book a table, or why not book out the entire area for a summer party to remember.? I recommend Bill’s over and over. Amazing food, beautiful cocktails and efficient and friendly staff.

The very best Irish Music comes to Harpenden Two of Ireland’s best music acts are heading to The Harpenden Public Halls this summer.
Donna Taggart Tuesday 12 June 7.30pm £18.50 + transaction fees Following her astonishing international success with ‘Jealous of the Angels’ which achieved multiplatinum status with well in excess of 100 million streams, Donna’s distinctive emotional singing has drawn comparisons with the likes of Eva Cassidy, Mary Black and Alison Krauss. Her debut Irish and UK tour in 2017 enthralled audiences and established her as one of Ireland’s top performers. Donna began singing when she was 22. It started by accident when a friend asked her to sing at a funeral and she has been singing and recording songs ever since. Donna first came to prominence in 2011 when her acclaimed debut album Celtic Lady Vol. 1 was picked up by highly respected BBC Radio Ulster presenter Gerry Anderson. A second album followed in 2013 (Celtic Lady Vol.2). This led to TV appearances on Ireland West Music TV Christmas show alongside the cream of musical talent in Ireland including Nathan Carter.
The Kilkennys Wednesday 20 June, 7.30pm £18.00 + transaction fees A traditional Irish folk and ballad band, The Kilkennys are noted for their dynamic arrangements, energetic performances and charismatic rapport with audiences across the globe. Picking up the mantle left by acts such as The 14 JUNE 2018
Dubliners and The Clancy Brothers, the 4 piece group continue to conquer tour circuits in Europe and the U.S. In the past years The Kilkennys have shared the stage with renowned Irish artists such as Shane McGowan, Sharron Shannon and Finbar Furey. Continuing their hectic tour schedule 2016 saw the band perform on the main stage at Milwaukee Irish Fest - the largest Irish Festival in the world. The band was established between schoolmates and began touring the length and breadth of Ireland in 1998. In 2008 they decided to name themselves ‘The Kilkennys’ after their beloved home, Kilkenny City. Now based in South East Ireland, the group have evolved through the years and are anchored by founding members Davey Cashin (vocals, mandolin, banjo, guitar, whistles), Tommy Mackey (bass, acoustic guitar, vocals), long time member Robbie Campion (banjo, guitar, madolin, vocals) and newest member Mick Martin ( bodhran, uilleann pipes, low whistles, guitar, vocals). Seeking to preserve their status for re-introducing Irish folk and ballads to a young audience while capturing the hearts of the more seasoned traditional music lover, The Kilkennys embark on their new show featuring new material, set to be released later in the year. The bands popularity continues to grow with every energy filled, toe tapping and hand clapping night of entertainment. Southdown Road, Harpenden AL5 1TE. 01582 767525. www.harpendenpublichalls.co.uk

GRIGOR DIMITROV, HYEON CHUNG & LUCAS POUILLE ARE CONFIRMED FOR ASPALL TENNIS CLASSIC AT THE HURLINGHAM CLUB, SW6 Tuesday 26th June – Friday 29th June 2018
I
MG has announced that Grigor Dimitrov, Hyeon Chung and Lucas Pouille have joined the line-up for this year’s Aspall Tennis Classic at the prestigious Hurlingham Club. 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the event, which, over the years, has become one of the world’s most starstudded tennis exhibitions. The Aspall Tennis Classic brings world-class tennis and hospitality together for an unmissable summer event, kicking off the British tennis season, during the week prior to Wimbledon. World No.5 Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov first broke into the top 10 in 2014 after advancing to the Wimbledon semi-finals, having defeated defending champion Andy Murray. Dimitrov claimed the biggest title of his career at the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals, finishing the season at a career high of World No. 3. He won four of his eight ATP titles in 2017, including Brisbane, where he beat top 10 opponents Dominic Thiem, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori. Rising star and top 20 player South Korean Hyeon Chung began this year with the biggest win of his career, beating World No. 4 Alexander Zverev in the third round of the Australian Open. He went on to upset six-time champion Novak Djokovic to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final, becoming the youngest player to do so since Marin Cilic in 2010. This spring, Chung passed Nishikori in the ATP rankings to end the Japanese player’s seven-year reign as the No. 1 Asian player, achieving a career-high of World No. 19. This will be Chung’s first time playing at the Aspall Tennis Classic at Hurlingham. Accompanying Dimitrov and Chung is Frenchman Lucas Pouille, who turned pro in 2012 and claimed his first ATP title in 2016 at Metz. Pouille was the only player in 2017 to win titles on

three different surfaces. Pouille sealed the 2017 Davis Cup title for France by defeating Belgian Steve Darcis. He is currently ranked World No. 11. During its 25 year history, some of the sport’s best players have competed at the event, including Grand Slam champions Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and Marin Čilić, as well as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Kei Nishikori. The Aspall Tennis Classic also draws many celebrity spectators; in the past, attendees have included Eleanor Tomlinson, Emilia Fox, Sol Campbell and Romeo Beckham. NEW BOUTIQUE GUEST HOUSE OPENS IN THE GROUNDS OF
W
HATFIELD HOUSE
e are delighted to announce the opening of Lawn House, a new Guest House set within the historic grounds of Hatfield House, home to the Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury. Originally built around 1785, the property has been sympathetically restored and is bursting with character and charm. Set within its own garden Lawn House comprises of 15 unique bedrooms all traditionally decorated and all with ensuite facilities. Nestled between our visitors’ farm and beautiful woodland it offers guests attending weddings or events at the Hatfield House Estate a perfect place to stay.
THE DESIGN: Threshold Interiors, were appointed to manage the interior design of Lawn House. They took inspiration from John Tradescant the Elder who was an English naturalist, gardener, collector and traveller. He began his career as head gardener to Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury at Hatfield House. In 1611, at Robert Cecil’s behest, John Tradescant the elder travelled through the Low Countries & Flanders to Paris, buying trees, flowering shrubs, vines, & bulbs for the new gardens at Hatfield. This inspiration was bought to life with the interior of each room carefully crafted. “Lawn House is a beautiful building with so many traditional features that bring the rooms to life. We enjoyed the challenge of working with the Estate’s existing furniture and upholstery, whilst sourcing new pieces that would sit alongside, seamlessly. The bathrooms are clean and modern but have traditional Victorian tiling and detailing in every one. We worked closely with Lady Salisbury to create interiors that are an eclectic mix of both modern and traditional.” Nicola McEwan (Director at Threshold Interiors) Lady Salisbury has been closely involved in the project to ensure Lawn House compliments Hatfield House itself. The bedrooms are designed with a mix of contemporary and classic pieces of furniture, with rooms featuring individual objects gleaned from the attics of Hatfield House. ‘A family house for a number of years, Lawn House was empty, unloved, and dilapidated. As there was a great need for accommodation to run alongside the many events that take place in the Park, we decided to bring it back to life, and this is the result.’ Lady Salisbury.
THE RESTORATION: The principle challenge was to retain the character of Lawn House whilst respecting the fact that it sits within the Grade 1 listed curtilage of Hatfield House. All work undertaken has ensured that the property was returned virtually to it its original condition, which involved items such as constructing windows sympathetically to the original design. www.lawn-house.com 36 JUNE 2018

Get Lippy
I
n the UK alone around 21,000 women are diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer each year. Of those, around 21 die every single day. Research from the Eve Appeal suggests 1 in 3 women put their lives at risk by not knowing, or ignoring, the signs of cancer. Many are not even aware that there are five kinds of gynaecological cancer: ovarian, womb, cervical, vaginal and vulval, and if they are aware, they find the symptoms too embarrassing to discuss. That’s the statistics but what about the real women and real lives that these cancers affect? Inspired by the Eve Appeal’s #GetLippy campaign, a group of ten remarkable women are breaking down the taboos surrounding these cancers by pushing for honest open conversation. All of the women photographed: Gaby Dagul, Alison Dagul, Katie Mumford, Jamie K, Elyse Taylor, Caroline Presho, Carina Drake, Amy Kay, Ester R and Fiona Bayley, are at a much higher risk of ovarian cancer due to an inherited mutation in either the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene. Women within the general UK population have around a 2% risk of ovarian cancer and a 11% risk of breast cancer over their lifetime. In comparison this group of
women, and thousands like them with a BRCA gene mutation, face lifetime risks of up to 90% for breast cancer and up to 60% for ovarian cancer. All of the ladies photographed have had breast surgery: for some it was life-saving measure in the battle to survive breast cancer, for others as a radical measure to prevent a cancer diagnosis. Some of the women have also had their ovaries removed or even full hysterectomies for the same tough reasons. All ten women braved their scars in a glamorous photoshoot to highlight that scars, surgeries and even the removal of womanly organs does not affect their femininity, in the hope that it will raise some life-changing and crucially needed awareness. Katie Mumford said, “We all braved our scars and stripped off for this shoot in the hope that our bravery would enable more women to have the courage to talk about these cancers and the symptoms that are too often thought of as embarrassing.” The shoot was the idea of Hertfordshire-based makeup-artist Gaby Dagul who has witnessed her Mum’s cancer battle and braved preventative surgery herself. Gaby secured the help of Steve Hampshire Photography who donated his time and expertise to make the shoot possible. Using her contacts, Gaby also enlisted a ‘glam-squad’ of local hair and make-up artists and a shoot location at The Village Hotel in Elstree, all provided free of charge for the cause. These ten brave women hope that you take three things away from this article: That you research and talk about the symptoms of gynaecological cancer, that you ask questions about your family history of breast and ovarian cancer and that you never feel too embarrassed to discuss your health. In short #GetLippy. For more information or for support on these issues visit: Theeveappeal.co.uk. Images: Steve Hampshire Photography

ondon Art Week Summer 2018, opens on the evening of Thursday 28 June and runs through to Friday 6 July with a new Late Night Opening on Tuesday 3 July. The event marks one of the most important weeks in the UK’s art market calendar. Notable exhibitions by some 40 pre-eminent art dealers, major Old Master sales at the auction houses and a raft of events attract collectors, connoisseurs and museum curators to the capital, underlining the central role that London plays in the international art world. During London Art Week more than 40 leading international art dealers will present exciting selling exhibitions, engaging events and art talks, at private galleries in Mayfair and St. James’s. London’s three major auction houses, Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Bonhams, will be staging their most important sales. Visitors will be able to see, learn about and buy an extraordinary range and quality of art encompassing Classical antiquities, Medieval and Renaissance textiles, master paintings and drawings from the Elizabethan and Baroque to Neoclassical and Post-Impressionist eras. Also on show will be watercolours from the 18th to 20th centuries, master sculptures in bronze, marble and terracotta, and modern art. Prices range from under £1,000 to several million pounds. Participants will be unveiling important works and staging exhibitions which demonstrate the unrivalled connoisseurship and expertise to be found in St. James’s and Mayfair, traditional home to the finest art and art dealerships for more than 250 years. Some dealer exhibitions have been years in the making, others are the first of their kind for decades. New discoveries, works appearing on the market for the first time in many generations, and great rarities are to be found. trying to outshine the other girls to be the most glamorous. When dressing to impress, Ladies’ Day is one of the most difficult days of the year. It is Spring, but the weather is utterly unpredictable; but it certainly won’t rain on the fashion parade! Heels have to be worn, tottering around on the grass; and there is the small matter of choosing the perfect frock to wow the judges in the Ladies’ Day competitions. As befits tradition, statement hats are the order of the day, with many race-goers keeping their most magnificent outfits for the occasion. Generally headpieces, hats or fascinators must be worn in the grandstand area - with hats mandatory in the royal enclosure. From the most glamorous designer millinery, to the ridiculous and oversized novelty, or indeed eccentric hats, Ladies’ Day has it all. The other important element, the people; your guests, be it business prospects, family or friends, you will have all the ingredients you need. Dress up and join the regal tradition and pageantry, join in the revelry, and enjoy a magnificent, and indeed memorable day of prestigious racing - and fashion.

• Sugar Beach, another new feature to the Royal brand offering the most fantastic pick and mix sweets selection you’ve ever seen plus Ice-cream - we certainly tried this out whilst onboard • Play Makers, a great sportsbar with 30 TV screens, beverages and great food - had a fab atmosphere each evening • Laser Tag, lots of guests tried this out and had a blast as the battles commenced • The Ultimate Family suite where the kids can slide from bed to breakfast, whilst parents kick back in the privacy of their own mastersuite - we even had a go on the slide. As well as the much loved Ultimate Abyss, Zip Wire, Robotic Bar - quite simply too much for me to mention it all. We would highly recommend this ship for families and couples who like to be busy – there’s something for everyone on board!

But people can so easily get stuck in a rut with their hair; I did some TV makeovers on Lorraine and one of the ladies had had the same hair cut for 30 years! We wouldn’t dream of wearing the same outfit for 30 years... My team is trained to look at a client’s face shape, skin tone, hair type, personality, and to then deliver the perfect hair, so we ask you questions in your consultation about you and your hair, but we won’t ask you whatyou want us to do – we’re the experts and we’ll make suggestions. It might be a whole different style, it might just be a tweak on the existing style, but we’ll find it – that perfect hair.” It’s this authority that’s made Jamie and his team so popular with the press; you may have seen him working his magic on Lorraine, This Morning, Gok’s Fashion Fix, How To Look Good Naked, The X Factor, or in any number of newspapers and magazines. A typical day in the life of Jamie and his team can include styling celebrities on location, filming hair hacks for TV shows, or travelling

Introducing…
My very own facelift procedure (It’s non-surgical!)
“I just look so old. The market’s full of youngsters in their 20s, I can’t believe that any interviewer will take me seriously”
W
hen Lisa came to see me she was stuck in a rut. In her mid40s, she had been working as a city executive for several years. Although she was desperate to apply for more permanent and more senior jobs, she lacked the self-confidence to do so. Lisa was convinced that the loose skin on her face made her look far older than she really was, and that interviewers would discriminate against her because of her age. While she was desperate for a cosmetic procedure to tighten her skin and restore her looks, she was also very nervous about her colleagues knowing she’d had work done. It was vital, she said, that any change was as subtle as possible. It was around that time that I finished developing my very own non-surgical face-lifting technique, called the R-Lift. It is so revolutionary that, I’m delighted to announce, we received a trademark for it! I started thinking about the technique four years ago, when I began seeing lots of people with what I call “the pillow look”. Their cheeks had been filled out in an effort to lift their skin, making them look, to my mind, a bit like hamsters. It was trendy at the time (!), but I knew that it wasn’t right for our patients, who wanted a much more natural look. Over the subsequent 18 months, I worked to 66 JUNE 2018
develop a procedure that gave the same effect as a facelift, but without patients having to go under the knife; using a minimum number of needles; and at a fraction of the cost. Most importantly, it needed to leave patients looking normal – not fake. With the R-Lift we inject small amounts of dermal fillers into as few as two points on either side of the face. Unlike ordinary fillers, we run a cannula beneath the skin’s surface, to release the fibrous bands that fuse skin to muscle and this fades deep wrinkles. The minimal use of needles means pain is unlikely - 99% of patients don’t require any anesthetic and bruising is extremely rare. It also meant we could keep the cost down to £900 at the lower end. And the results? The R-Lift refreshes and restores your skin, making you look younger – but still like you. People won’t know you’ve had anything done, they’ll just think you’re looking great. Take Lisa. She had the R-Lift about 18 months ago, and hasn’t looked back since. Within weeks, she noticed such a difference that she had the confidence and self-assurance to apply for the jobs she had previously shied away from. This procedure is only available here at Riverbanks. We’re really excited about the new trademark, and would love to tell you more about how it can help you look fabulous, too.

The perfect scent Katie Wright finds out how to get the most out of your fragrance - and discovers some common mistakes you might be making.
Fragrances that won’t fade 3 long-lasting notes and where to find them
P
erfume: it’s such a personal thing. A fragrance that makes one person swoon might make another wrinkle up their nose in disgust - and finding your signature scent can takes years of spritzing and dismissing until love at first sniff takes hold. And while everyone wants to smell nice, you don’t want to be that person who swans around in a pungent, overpowering cloud, causing headaches and breathing difficulties whenever someone is forced to share a lift with you. Which begs the question: how much ‘eau’ should you actually wear? In a bid to strike the perfect perfume balance, we asked the experts for their olfactory advice... Where on the body is it best to apply perfume? “Apply perfume to pulse points including wrists, knees, inside elbows, the nape of the neck and even above the hip bones. These are all places which are naturally warmer and heat intensifies scent,” says Cathy Newman, customer director at The Perfume Shop. “The wrist area is particularly effective, as it allows you to smell the fragrance through the day as it evolves, learning which scents work best for your body chemistry,” recommends Rafael Trujillo, P&G perfume designer. “Another idea is to give a spritz of perfume to your dry hair so, as your hair moves throughout the day, you add scent to your surroundings.” How many spritzes of perfume should you apply? “This is very much depending on the individual’s taste and also the type of fragrance they are wearing,” says Trujillo. “Some fragrances tend to be perceived as heavier, such as gourmand fragrances which consist of synthetic edible notes like vanilla or honey. One spritz may be enough - apply too much of these and you may end up smelling like a
72 JUNE 2018
Tuberose: Carolina Herrera Good Girl Eau de Parfum, £94.50 for 80ml, The Perfume Shop candy shop!” Newman agrees: “How many spritzes to apply really does depend on each individual as our body temperature will affect the intensity of the perfume - the warmer the body, the more intense the scent. Some perfumes contain notes which are naturally longer-lasting, such patchouli, tuberose and coffee. This stands in contrast to light and sheer florals which became all the rage in the late Nineties and early 2000’s,” Trujillo says. “They allow for a few spritzes and can even be topped up throughout the day.” How can you make a fragrance last longer? “To get the longevity out of a scent, the best thing to do is layer. Using the body wash and lotion of the chosen perfume will help intensify the scent,” Newman says. “Fabric has the ability to hold a scent longer than our skin, and this should be the foundation layer in your scent regime,” says Truijllo, who developed the Parfum des Secrets collection from Lenor, made with premium ingredients that are proven to last longer than fine fragrance. “Ensure it compliments your other fragrances, then even when they fade, you’ll still be enveloped in your favourite scents.” There are a couple of perfume no-no’s to be aware of as well, Newman warns: “There is a common misconception that when one sprays perfume onto the skin it should be rubbed in. This will not only bruise the scent, it will affect its longevity. The best way to apply perfume is to let it settle onto the skin, so patience is key simply spray onto the pulse points and leave it to soak in.” How you store your scents is important too: “You wouldn’t store a delicious bowl of fruit in direct sunlight and the same goes for perfume,” she says. “Make sure perfume bottles are kept in a cool, dark place and out of direct sunlight to make sure they retain their beautiful fragrance.

What is tennis elbow and does it only affect tennis players? Tennis elbow is a degenerative disease affecting one of the tendons attached to the outside (lateral side) of the elbow which is responsible for extending the wrist joint. It is also know as lateral epicondylitis and is one of the causes of pain on the outside of the elbow. While tennis elbow can affect tennis players it is often caused by repetitive strain or overuse activities and therefore can be brought on by or may affect work and recreational activities. The condition is often self limiting and can get better on its own but the pain and disability it causes can hamper work and recreation causing frustration for patients with the condition. What can I do to manage tennis elbow? Self management of early symptoms include avoidance of the activities that aggravate the pain. Pain killers including anti-inflammatory medication, and tennis elbow braces. Tennis elbow braces can be bought over the counter. Tennis elbow braces need to be worn properly to be effective and should only be used during activity so please follow diagrams and package instructions. When should I seek treatment? You should see your GP or a physiotherapist if the symptoms do not settle with self management within a reasonable timeframe. What is the main treatment for tennis elbow? The best proven treatment for tennis elbow is physiotherapy. Physiotherapy should consist of a 12 week program of strengthening and eccentric loading exercises. It is normal for these exercises to hurt while doing them. Their aim is to trigger healing of the degenerate tendon. I’ve hear steroid injections will take the pain away should I have one?
Steroid injections were common in the treatment of tennis elbow, however, several recent research studies show that although they provide some short term pain relief, the pain often returns and patients can be worse off that if they had received no treatment at all. When should I be referred to a specialist and will I need surgery? Patients should be referred to a specialist if symptoms do not settle with a good course of physiotherapy. The specialist would re-examine the patient’s elbow and may do investigations such as X-rays, or an MRI scan to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes of pain on the outside of the elbow. Surgery may be indicated if the diagnosis is confirmed and has not responded to conservative management and is causing the patient disability. The outcomes of surgery can be unpredictable without following these steps. If surgery is needed I recommend a keyhole tennis elbow release which takes away the degenerate tendon tissue. I prefer to do this with keyhole surgery as it causes minimum damage to normal tissues, can find and treat other causes of elbow pain, and allows early recovery. What if I’m afraid of having a general anaesthetic or have had bad experiences with anaesthetics in the past? I often recommend to my patients that they have their shoulder and elbow surgery done with the patient awake. This is done using regional anaesthesia. The anaesthetist uses ultrasound guidance to put local anaesthetic near the nerves in the neck and arm numbing them and allowing safe surgery while the patient is awake. Awake shoulder and elbow surgery allows patients to avoid many of the risks of general anaesthetics, and allows quicker recovery and better post operative pain relief.

ith the biggest wedding of the year now been and gone, it somewhat feels as though we’ve reached “peak wedding” already this year – and we’re only five months in. Still, with May through to August being the most popular months of the year to get hitched, you might have a nuptials coming up you will be attending. There are many occasions in our summer social calendar that we might need to wear a dress to; such as christenings, Ascot, garden parties, birthday bashes and formal balls. The big question is: what dress should we be wearing at the social event of the year? Working out what to wear to a wedding can be a minefield, to say the least. Women can spend hours searching online or shopping for a dress for the event, or as a personal shopper and stylist they ask me to do the searching for them! Not so long ago, the occasionwear market was a pretty uninspiring affair. Unless you had the sort of money that afforded a browse on NetA-Porter, the high-street options were limited. Now there are many places that you can look for your outfit and many online retailers offer a ‘wedding guests’ tab to give you ideas ranging from jumpsuits to separates catering to every style. If you need some style inspiration on what dresses to wear to your occasion then read my guide on the most fashionable dress trends for this summer.
Florals Summer wouldn’t be summer without a sea of florals and pretty dresses and let’s face aren’t exactly groundbreaking. But this season they are everywhere, whether they’re in a patchwork effect, printed, embroidered or painted everyone can pull off this botanical trend. The vintage floral style is never cliché and is perennial fashion statement, feminine and floaty is can be worn post occasion with a denim jacket and trainers and will become your wardrobe favourite.
Pastels Delicate sugared almond shades have shaken off their Hyacinth Bucket connotations and turned themselves into a fashion statement. Pantone’s colour of the year is a lilac shade, but we still cannot get enough of pastel shades of pink and hues of blush. Ensure you know the right pink colour for your skin tone and Blush will add a touch of femininity to your outfit. Although blush pink has been a hit with weddings for some time, you can pair your tone with purple, darker magenta pink, and rose gold to bring it bang upto date for this year.
Ruffles Ruffles are another popular fashion flourish, but not the fluffy, fussy kind found on a bassinet or a Laura Ashley skirt. Think something looser, more in the way of a pretty flounce. Ruffles are a popular finish, from putting rows of tiny ones on a puffy sleeve to finishing off a bracelet-length cuff with a swish of movement.
Square necklines Undoubtly Amal Clooney topped all the best dressed lists from Harry and Meghan’s wedding, 76 JUNE 2018
her Stella McCartney yellow dress encompassed her chic style with a touch of uniqueness to her square neckline. The square neckline has looked painfully dated for a number of years now but it is set to make it’s comeback into a full blown trend. It delicately highlights the shoulders and décolletage without being rude or lewd about it, it’s very flattering, elegant and modern. This is just the beginning for the square neckline so expect to see alot more of it over the coming seasons. Why it is important to specify the right bi-folding doors configuration I f you are thinking about replacement bifolding and sliding doors for an existing “opening” to replace French doors, sliding patio doors or casement windows, or indeed looking at fitting folding and sliding doors into an extension - getting the right configuration first time round is vital to ensure their long-term practical operation. When it comes to “Bi-Fold” doors the clue is in the name, yet, despite this, many double glazing customers still get into hot water when having bi-folding doors fitted, as they did not take the time to think through the ramifications of certain configurations. The key thing with bi-folding doors is to remember that each “pair” of bi-folds, opens and closes in tandem, so cannot operate as individual sections, they are in-effect one. As these two folding door sections are inextricably linked, no pair of bifolding doors can therefore accommodate a normal door handle, nor can one of these two sections
86 JUNE 2018
operate as a travel door without the other opening or closing at the same time. Consequently, if you want to have a single travel door as part of your bifolding door configuration, you need to have an odd number of sections, namely 3, 5 or 7 panes etc. Only high quality bi-folding doors will last regular use, as they are highly technical pieces of kit (and yes, they are consequently expensive!), so it is vital when purchasing double glazed bi-folding doors, to invest wisely in robust enough products that will still be operational in 10 years’ time when the guarantee runs out and the homeowner is left to foot the bills for all the call-out charges, parts and labour to get the folding doors operational and secure again. To avoid such issues, don’t buy a cheap set of folding and sliding doors, or indeed bi-folding doors without a cast iron warranty from a firm you are 100% certain will be around to service the guarantee. It is worth asking yourself why some established UK independent double glazing manufacturers and installers who supply and fit aluminium and UPVC front doors, back doors, French doors and sliding patio doors in both aluminium and UPVC, refuse to touch UPVC bi-folding doors. Could it be they are not fit for purpose? As a material, UPVC flexes, so is not the ideal product to use for bi-folding doors that need to operate rigidly, as one, and not be in any danger of popping out of alignment. High quality double glazed aluminium bi-folding doors not only offer better security than plastic dual folding doors, but tend to have slimmer profiles, so are aesthetically more pleasing and deliver more glass and daylight. Yes UPVC folding doors are much cheaper to buy, but it is up to you if you want to take on the risks involved, and are prepared to have less glass and light in the room in question. The optimum number of sections for a bifolding door for each particular property is really determined by the size of the aperture and how often these folding and sliding double glazed doors will be used. If you are looking for all the sections to slide in one direction, then a 3, 5 or 7 section door will deliver a travel door with a normal door handle. The problem with 2, 4 or 6 section bi-folds doors which all flow in one direction is they cannot have a normal door handle, so are unable to fold up together properly, and therefore are more limited in their operation. Make sure that the doors you have fitted, come with “D” handles to assist with the opening and closing of the doors, as dragging them from one end can pull and stretch the gasket, leading to unnecessary time consuming service calls. All bi-folding doors systems, whether made of aluminium, steel, UPVC or wood have their
limitations in terms of both overall height and overall width, and indeed maximum and minimum achievable pane section sizes. So before creating an opening for bi-folding doors, do make sure that the product you are considering having installed will actually be able to fit it! It is better to make the opening to the optimum size of the bi-folding door system you have chosen, rather than the other way round. One top tip to remember is that these systems are highly technical bits of kits, so make sure they are fitted by professional installers with experience fitting the actual system you are having fitted. Many reputable firms will not supply bi-folding doors on a supply only basis for this very reason. Finally, it is worth knowing that some bespoke aluminium bi-folding door systems allow for one single section at one end to swing open, allowing say a 3 section sliding and folding door to butt up to this, enabling the property to have a travel door, pair of French door and bi-folding doors all in one configuration of 3 linked sections, plus one independent swinging open section. Think carefully whether you want your bi-folding doors to a) open to the left or to the right, b) fold inwardly or outwardly and c) have a standard or low threshold. PERFECT PATTERNS FOR YOUR KITCHEN
M
ezzo is Original Style’s latest collection of patterned wall and floor tiles which boasts eclectic designs inspired by arts and cultures from around the globe. It has been added to the brand’s Odyssey range, sitting comfortably between the larger format Grande tiles and smaller - Primo - products. Mezzo’s new nine exclusive patterns have been designed in-house, taking inspiration from everything from traditional tiles and rugs to ancient art. These designs are anything but old fashioned – they have a modern feel with an urban edge and work well in period properties .
As well as being designed here they are also printed in our Exeter factory, in the heart of Devon. The cement-effect surface has a slightly aged, worn look. The subtle and limited colour palette of duck egg blue and grey on the warm beige base is limited so the nine designs can be combined into an elegant mélange (available as a pack of nine) as well as working beautifully as individual layouts. Mezzo glazed porcelain tiles are all 200 x 200 x 8mm, a versatile size for both large and small spaces. Suitable for residential interiors (walls and floors) they are not restricted to bathrooms and kitchens, as they look just as glamorous in living and dining areas, hallways and conservatories. www.originalstyle.com 94 JUNE 2018

Country Classics Country style’s surely one of the most timeless, adaptable and family-friendly looks around, with its emphasis on comfort and informality. Even if you don’t live in a cottage adorned with roses, a stately home or a cabin set in the woods, you can still embrace rustic chic. WORDS: GABRIELLE FAGAN
W
ell-loved furniture (a distressed finish is an asset), natural materials and interesting textures are vital ingredients. Then all that’s needed is a little flair to choose a look which perfectly suits your rooms. By using a selective colour palette of soft neutrals, mixed with darker, woodland greens and river blues, you can create a stunning country lodge-style that’s luxurious and homely in equal measure. Play around with different looks and enjoy a pastoral scene no matter the view outside.”
BLOOMING COUNTRY Nature’s palette and floral designs are the classic decor choice and will create a fresh, colourful interior that brings the outdoors in. Florals and toiles can look decorative and feminine set against whitewashed walls, or will soften a slightly more macho scheme featuring exposed brick work and wooden beams. There’s no end to the versatility of country, which is why it’s endlessly popular and one of the easiest and most affordable schemes to create. An Aga’s surely an essential for a traditional country cottage and a light pink Rose shade has now been added to colour choices for the iconic range cooker, which starts from £4,995.
VINTAGE COUNTRY Play with texture, scale and well-worn finishes for a look which is relaxed and eclectic. The country aesthetic can be achieved in many different ways mixing different textures and materials helps create a subtle layered look. For a more traditional style, 100 JUNE 2018
opt for a pattern and play around with dimensions and different layouts to inject a modern twist. Floral and encaustic designs work perfectly with Frenchstyle wooden furniture with a distressed finish. Opt for a natural palette of shades, ranging from soft browns to mustards and creams. Terracotta tiles could look stunning on a feature wall or in a rustic kitchen.
NEW COUNTRY This fresh reinvention of country conjures a calm, uncluttered, refined atmosphere, allowing beautifully-crafted furniture and possessions to star. New country makes a historical style statement which is quintessentially British. There’s a comfortable confidence about this look that makes it easy to live with and, because there’s no rigidity or rules for this interpretation, there’s the freedom to mix old with new, and contrast tradition with innovation. It’s a nod to tradition, yet gracefully chic, so you can celebrate our cultural heritage happy in the knowledge that your rooms will look bang up-to-date. Tongue and groove panelling or walls painted in soft stone or cream shades are a perfect soothing backdrop.

Create a romantic garden tribute to
Harry & Meghan Here are some of the features which could make up your romantic setting...
Cottage garden favourites Roses, foxgloves, peonies and delphiniums in soft, pastel shades of lilac, blues, pinks and whites all have their place in the cottage garden, which has a relaxed feel and a dreamy, haphazard informal structure. If you have space, plant naturalistic grasses in swathes, interspersing them with softhued flowers, to create a hazy effect. Repeat-plant to provide some structure to what typically looks like an informal, unforced design.
Want to add a touch of romance to your garden, in honour of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle? words:
Hannah Stephenson
Y
ou may not have the resources of Philippa Craddock, the royal couple’s wedding florist, but you can still reserve a space in your garden to create a lover’s haven, complete with heavily scented roses, blousy peonies and foxgloves, their chosen flowers. Expand your repertoire to feature further romantic notes, including fragrant lavender, swathes of wispy ornamental grass and arches adorned with soft-hued climbers, such as scented jasmine and honeysuckle.
102 JUNE 2018
White roses White garden roses represent purity, innocence and, in earlier days, were used as a symbol of true love, before red became more popularly associated. The Sunken Garden where Harry and Meghan had their first photo call was planted with white flowers to mark the 20th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. If you want a romantic cottage garden, you’ll need an open, sunny area with well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter - such as compost or well-rotted manure. Other plants which typically fit into the cottage garden setting include lavender, salvia, astrantia, Verbena bonariensis and aquilegia. Cosy seating Even in the smallest space, if you can incorporate snuggled seating and fringe it with scented plants,
such as lavender, or create an archway of roses and clematis over it, then you’ll be heading for the height of romance. A secluded spot somewhere quiet in the garden, which enjoys sun for at least part of the day, can become a lovers’ retreat. Water features Water not only creates an air of calm to a garden, but it can also reflect the sky, passing clouds and surrounding foliage, as well as helping to blot out traffic noise. It can be a feature to admire, or just to listen to at the end of the day. Coupled with soft solar lighting and white-flowered plants, it’s also an after-dark haven. If you want the water to reflect the sky, go for a feature of shallow, still water without plants, using a dark material in the bottom of the water feature, to make the most of the reflections. Flowers for cutting Bring the romantic garden inside by growing flowers for cutting outside, including sweet peas, cornflowers and roses, as well as alstroemeria, delphiniums and pinks. Just a few blooms from your romantic plot, cut at the back of a plant where it won’t show, can be arranged in a pretty enamel jug or glass vase. Make sure you don’t cut your flowers from one place, leaving an obvious gap in your border, though. Sculpture Of course, a carefully-chosen sculpture is a huge romantic gesture in any garden. There’s a wealth to choose from, from granite nymphs to heart-shaped ironmongery, bronze lovers, and coloured-glass installations and astrological signs. Before buying your sculpture, think about where you’re going to put it and take a picture of the spot to get an idea of size, location (will it be in sun or shade?) and how the will light change the colour of the piece. If necessary, place cardboard boxes on top of each other in the spot, to get an idea of scale, and make sure it has enough space to stand out - without getting in the way of access to a pathway or another section of the garden. It may be safer to choose the piece together and share the enjoyment - and the romance - for years to come.
