some of the choirs up on stage with us would be a great experience for both them and us” - Oliver Baines, Tenor. BLAKE have an impressive CV of achievements including several No. 1s, multi-platinum selling albums and over 150 TV appearances, as well as having won a Brit Award for Album of the Year. Famous fans include Keira Knightley, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Will Smith. Gallery 1066, bringing Art to the Heart of Hertfordshire June Top Picks…
Anna Mazzotta Following her sell out solo show in Soho last month Gallery 1066 is proud to introduce the ultra glamourous humour of Anna Mazzotta. Bringing this new exciting artist into the gallery has attracted art lovers far and wide. Painting to capture the essence of the moment… Anna says: ‘My painting is a way of seeing the world, thinking – feeling, showing sensations, not just the mechanics of a scene, but instead emphasising energy, life and letting the inner emotion of the characters come forth. I am passionate about the beauty of caricatures, as they are a true connection with how an artist sees the world – the viewer then enters that world and then makes their own interpretation.’ Anna’s paintings are larger than life in many respects and are suffused with the energy, narrative and humour you’d expect from burlesque and theatrical influences.

Inspired by The Battle of the Somme Download Blippar from your App store and scan this painting and be amazed!
The Battle of the Somme: An emotional tribute by Scarlett Raven Scarlett describes herself as an Augmentist, painting impressionistically but using reality to reveal the deeply personal process beneath each painting. Scarlett is the first artist to unite technology with art using an app Blippar. If you download this app on your phone Blippar will unveil the story behind each painting to reveal the creative journey beneath; the thought process, the layers of paint, the raw emotion and her inspiration. Her current collection ‘The Danger Tree’ is inspired by the tragic events of WWI, in particular The Danger
Tree, a commemorative gathering point which marked the spot where, in 1916, troops from The Newfoundlanders part of the 29th British Division - gathered for shelter on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme. The tree became an easy target for German artillery and marked the spot where many of the Newfoundlanders would lose their lives that day. Inspired by her father’s reverence, Scarlett immersed herself in the history and poetry of the time and each of her new paintings is named after a classic war poem. This Central Saint Martin’s graduate is one of the youngest artists to have had a solo exhibition in London’s esteemed Cork Street Galleries and has many high-profile collectors and supporters include Lord Jonathan Marland, Duffy, Take That, Roxy Music and Orlando Bloom. Please visit Gallery 1066 to experience the revolutionary collaboration of art and technology and let Blippar unveil the layers behind Scarlett’s heart felt collection.

Their multi-award winning Silent Pool Gin is produced in small batches using a custom made still which is heated by steam from a reclaimed English boiler that’s fired on local hardwood. Even the bottling is done on site. It is all very labour intensive, but well worth the effort to create a delicate, complex and internationally acclaimed gin that is rolling out across the UK, Europe, USA and soon Japan.
“Silent Pool Distillers coined the phrase ‘intricately realised ‘to embody their core values – to be an artisan producer of high quality spirits”. Silent Pool Distillers coined the phrase ‘intricately realised ‘to embody their core values – to be an artisan producer of high quality spirits. This philosophy is evident from the beautiful teal and copper filigree bottle design to the refreshingly individual gin inside and it’s the thread that runs through the crafting not only of Silent Pool Gin, but all their products. It is exciting times for the company that has been bowled over by the meteoric rise in orders for its products, both domestically (Silent Pool Gin is now available in Waitrose, Majestic, M&S, Wine Rack 3 2 JUNE 2 0 1 7
and other fine retailers nationwide) and abroad. In order to meet rapidly growing demand, Silent Pool Distillers are expanding their current distillery, converting two adjacent barns into a home for their new 1,800 litre bespoke copper still. Nestled on the banks of the spring-fed Silent Pool, in the beautiful Surrey Hills, the distillery is open to visitors 7 days a week, Monday-Saturday 9:30-17:00, Sundays & Bank holidays 10:00 – 15:00. You can even immerse yourself into the world of Silent Pool Gin with a 90 minute deep dive distillery tour, covering all aspects of production including product sampling. Admission is £15pp including a £5 voucher and pre-booking is essential. On Saturday 10th of June, the Silent Pool team are having a party at the distillery to celebrate World Gin Day and they welcome members of the public to join them. Meet the distillers, learn how they make their craft spirits, and taste some amazing cocktails including the Cherry Spritz cocktail created in support of Cherry Trees, a local charity which provides respite care for children and young adults with various disabilities. The distillery, located just outside Guildford, is open between 10:00 and 17:00, where free 20-minute distillery tours will be available on a first come, first serve basis. Knebworth to host spectacular summer music weekend
S
o, The Knebworth Prom is coming to Hertfordshire this summer to wow thousands of concertgoers with anthemic tunes performed by globally renowned artists. Here, we talk to some of the performers about what the Knebworth crowd can expect from two very different concerts…
Classic Ibiza
On Saturday 19 August the Knebworth air will be filled with dance anthems at Classic Ibiza. The evening brings together Urban Soul Orchestra (USO) and DJ Goldierocks, both of whom are excited to be performing at this amazing venue. Goldierocks, who has a busy year ahead with opening parties in Ibiza and festivals, including Glastonbury, works regularly with “great friends” USO. They first met at a private function on a yacht in Monaco for the Grand Prix about five years ago and have since performed with some of modern music’s A-list, including Tinie Tempah and Jess Glynn. Stephen Hussey, founder of USO, comments on what makes Classic Ibiza so special? “The Classic Ibiza formula works so well because it is something new and different that appeals to so many people: Ibiza dance tunes meets classical orchestra; stunning stately home meets music festival. There is something for all ages to enjoy everyone is guaranteed a great time.”
Ticket Competition To win 2 free tickets to Classic Ibiza or The Great British Prom, with VIP parking and a “meet & greet” with the artists. To enter, email your answer to the question below, to competition@fishmediagroup.co.uk Name the two orchestras performing at the Knebworth Proms weekend? Please include your full name. The winner will be contacted by Revival Productions via email. Closing Date: Friday June 9th
The track-list is going to be jam packed with Ibiza classics, including: “Sandstorm” by Daruda, “Waves” by Mr Probz and “Superstylin’” and “Easy” by Groove Armada. USO has played with Groove Armada before, so they’re delighted to be performing two of their tracks at Classic Ibiza.
The Great British Prom
Sunday 20 August is going to bring a completely different atmosphere to Knebworth. The Great British Prom, promises a very special formula with the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), Classical Brit award-winning Only Men Aloud, soprano Annette Wardell and The Band of the Home Counties Pipes and Drums leading the way with a programme of iconic music from around the British Isles. NSO is renowned for being one of the very best in the country and has performed Opera Evenings with artistes such as Dame Kiri Ta Kanawa and Lesley Garrett. Justin Pearson, General Manager and Artistic Director of the NSO says: “NSO is thrilled to be performing this year’s Proms and I am sure that the specially devised programme will delight Knebworth. We shall faithfully recreate the buzz of the Last Night of the Proms; thrilling to the 1812 Overture, being charmed by the dazzling diva Annette Wardell, an entire band of pipers, fireworks, Only Men Aloud and a full symphony orchestra. Unmissable!” NSO has performed before with the Classical Brit Award-winning Only Men Aloud (OMA). A couple of years ago, they did a summer series of Last Night of the Proms across the UK and as Craig Yates, a baritone in OMA says: “We love performing with a live orchestra and the NSO are one of the best.” For more details on the events, visit www.classicibiza.co.uk or www.greatbritishprom.co.uk or call 01630 674342. here can you meet a robotic rhino, a squid with 18-foot tentacles and a huge housefly with a vacuum cleaner for a mouth? The Robot Zoo is home to all these and more at the Horniman Museum & Gardens. The Robot Zoo houses larger-than-life-size robot animals made from familiar machine parts and gadgets, in an exciting hands-on family exhibition revealing some of nature’s most amazing adaptations. Through interactive games and challenges, The Robot Zoo reveals how a chameleon changes colour, what makes grasshoppers leap so high, and exactly why a platypus looks so strange. Using pistons for muscles, pipes instead of intestines, and computerised ‘brains’, the robot animals show how their real life counterparts see, hear, hunt, hide and move. And through other interactive exhibits visitors can try their hand at squid racing, fire a chameleon’s ‘tongue-gun’ and even design their own ‘mutant’ robot creature. Dr Emma-Louise Nicholls, Deputy Keeper of Natural History at the Horniman says: ‘Animals are amazing, and these robots really show us how. The everyday parts used – tubes, hinges and even a fly-swatter – form innovative representations of the amazing tools and abilities that have evolved in nature to allow animals to survive in a wide variety of environments and habitats. From a housefly’s lightning reactions to a bat’s ability to locate prey in the dark, this exhibition demonstrates just how extraordinary the animals that share our world really are.’ The Robot Zoo is open until Sunday 29th October 2017.

Beechwood Park School A Community in Action
E
dward Balfour, Headmaster at Beechwood Park School in Markyate, announced this month that the cumulative total raised for Keech Hospice Care by the Beechwood Park School Parents’ Association (BPSPA) and pupils had reached a staggering £200,000. Keech Hospice Care is a local charity based near Luton, which provides free, specialist care for adults and children with life-limiting conditions as well as vital support for their family and friends. Beechwood Park School has had a close connection with Keech for over 19 years and, during this time, donations have enabled the funding of programmes such as “Girls Aloud”, a club offering friendship and practical support to some of the young teenagers supported by the charity, and to ‘Sparklers’, a sibling bereavement programme. Regional and Events Fundraising Manager for Keech, Mark Relf, who attended a celebratory assembly at Beechwood Park, thanked the School for their commitment to the charity over many years and explained to the pupils some of the work that the charity does. Mr Balfour thanked the BPSPA for its amazing achievements, saying “Beechwood Park is delighted be involved with such a worthy cause and to be part of these programmes which make such a significant difference to people’s lives”. Hospice Care long into the future.” Beechwood Park, a School for over 530 pupils, still retains the family feel of a smaller School and has an extremely active Parents’ Association who contribute time, talent and enthusiasm to produce many events, for adults and children. Whilst fun plays a major part in these events, the underlying drive is the support and care for local charities and for the School community itself. The next big fundraising event on the horizon for the BPSPA is a Venetian Masked Summer Ball. Whilst pupils are enthusiastically decorating masks to adorn the walls of the School’s Great Hall and marquee, parent volunteers are meticulously planning the event and seeking sponsors. Guests will enjoy a dazzling evening in the School’s Queen Anne-style buildings and the Capability Brown landscaped grounds. The Parents’ Association has recently funded projects including a new swimming pool complex and an outdoor classroom in support of the School’s Forest School facilities. FLYING HIGH B
edBox® is the ultimate travel gadget for children from birth until 7 years of age. It is your child’s hand luggage, ride-on suitcase and inflight bed/leg-rest, all in one. Designed by former-Norwegian Captain and engineer Halvor Holmgren and his wife, a specialist in children’s travel products, they have revolutionised flying with children. Travelling with children can be stressful, tiring and demanding. The ride-on aspect of our BedBox makes getting through long airport corridors easier, quicker and much more fun. Because of the adjustable wheels, the BedBox handles better than dad’s sports car. And as a plus, we made it into a suitcase according to carry-on dimensions, so you can use it as nappy bag or allow your kids to pack for themselves. But what about the part of the journey that you spend in the air? For many parents, the real hassle about traveling starts when entering the aircraft.

“The ride-on aspect of our BedBox makes getting through long airport corridors easier, quicker and much more fun”
Getting a child to sleep on the plane, can be one of the most horrendous parts of travelling with a young child and yet solutions for children sleeping onboard most aircrafts are very limited. The flight attendant might tell your child to get off the floor (not most comfortable option anyway!). If you have the luxury to have a row of seats to yourself, you might allow your child to sleep across the row meaning they cannot use the seatbelt (not the safest option!). And finally, if they are asleep on you; you cannot move (not the most practical option!). Therefore, the BedBox comes to the rescue: for you, your child, and every other passenger on board who wants quiet flight! Giving your child the option to lie down fully stretched out, or using it as a leg rest if they are older, means they can still use the seat belt and get some shut eye. As a parent it means you can sit back, enjoy your inflight meal and watch the inflight movies undisturbed. So. Yes, it’s a suitcase. Yes, it’s a bed. Yes, it’s a miracle. www.jet-kids.com

aradise Wildlife Park is one of only two zoos in the UK, and one of six in Europe, recommended to breed Jaguars, as part of the EEP (European Endangered Species Programme). And as of the 2nd April 2017, Paradise have had their first Jaguar cub born at Paradise Wildlife Park. And it’s currently the only Jaguar cub in the UK. The cub’s parents, Kumal and Kedera were first introduced 18 months ago and hit it off from the start. We are delighted to say that currently both Kedera and her cub – a girl – are doing well. Kedera and the cub (who is yet to be named) will be out of view from the public until July, allowing them to bond and to make sure both mother and cub are happy and healthy. Jaguars are classified as ‘near threatened’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) so this is a real cause for celebration. However, keepers are keeping a close eye on mother and cub as with most baby wild animals it is a vulnerable time! So far, our keepers are very happy with the cub’s progress. Paradise Wildlife Park was formed in 1984 and is already well known for its animal breeding and conservation work. To date, the Park has made contributions of over £5,000,000 to conservation projects and wildlife causes in the UK and around the world, as well as other charities and good causes. It is also part of the European Endangered Species Breeding Programme, with successful Jaguar, African Penguin, Lar Gibbon, Cotton Top Tamarin, Silvery Marmoset and Red Ruff Lemur births in the past year alone. With recommendations to breed Snow Leopards and Red Pandas. Voted Hertfordshire’s Top Tourist Attraction and with a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, the new ZSH charity will continue to utilise the Paradise Wildlife Park brand in order to raise funds for its work and to act as a focus for an expanded wildlife education programme for visitors. Home to over 500 exotic wild animals, including big cats (Paradise is the only zoo in the UK with up to 5 different Cat species; Tigers, White Lions, Jaguars, Snow Leopards and a White Tiger), Monkeys (we have one of the largest collections of small monkeys in the UK), Zebras, Lemurs, Meerkats, Red Pandas, Tapirs, Penguins, Wallabies, Emus, Birds of Prey, Reptiles (including the UK’s largest Anaconda) and many more. Paradise Wildlife Park / The Zoological Society of Hertfordshire is situated 20 miles north of London, 7 miles from Junction 25 on the M25 and approximately 25 minutes from London Liverpool Street by rail. SUMMER READY SKIN Hi there, A few weeks ago I pulled a muscle in my back while engaging in my favourite sport, water skiing. When I went to see my sports massage therapist, she yelled at me that I was going to have a much longer recovery time, because my muscles were so dehydrated. As muscles are 75% water, when your body is short on water, your muscles are easily fatigued. She ordered me to make sure I was drinking 8 cups of water a day. I went right back to the clinic and booked myself in for a Reviv IV infusion, which is the most efficient way to hydrate yourself (…as well as restore vital nutrients and minerals I had clearly lost). But for the next few days, I will also be making a conscious effort to drink water continuously. Of course, that’s good advice for everyone – injured or not – particularly in the run-up to summer. Just like our muscles, our skin, too, needs lots of hydration to stay healthy and to look its best. But as the temperature rises, many skin types dry out. Add to that exposure to air conditioning, recycled air in flights and chlorine in swimming pools, and summer time can wreak havoc with your skin. While you can’t “store up” water in advance, you want to start summer with your skin as healthy as possible. When your skin – and body - are properly hydrated, you are less likely to burn, you are more resistant to the effects of alcohol, you’ll feel more energised and be more likely to enjoy your time outdoors. Getting into good habits now will also pay off. If you get used to drinking 8 glasses of water a day now, you will be more likely to continue throughout the summer months. So drink even if you’re not thirsty; If you are, the dehydration has already begun. If you don’t like water, consider herbal teas. Sadly, alcohol doesn’t count, as it dehydrates rather than hydrates. Until recently it was accepted that the same was true of coffee and mist fizzy soft drinks. More recent studies have been equivocal, so the jury’s still out. As an added benefit, if you have had an aesthetic skin treatment, staying hydrated will make it more effective. If, for example, you are six months into your fillers treatment and feel they are starting to fade, increase your water intake. The liquid will be re-absorbed by the fillers, and you might be able to extend the effects for another couple of weeks. The starting price for the IV Reviv is £199.00 for the most common Reviv’s (although we also a Royal Flush as well at £345.00) Warm regards, Ravi

f you want to know about make-up, skincare and products that’ll make you look and feel fantastic, ask a beauty vlogger. Bubz - aka Lindy Tsang - launched her vlog Bubzbeauty almost a decade ago, when she couldn’t find a ‘real’ job. She now makes a very successful living out of it - as her three million YouTube subscribers will tell you, not to mention her 814K Instagram and 262K Twitter followers. The Northern Irish mum-of-one (with another on the way) is a big fan of Japanese products (because of their “quality control”) and Korean beauty trends, but mostly likes to keep things simple. “Simple looks don’t go out of style,” says Bubz, 30. “Make-up that’s too heavy can age you, so you want to look fresh-faced.” Here are her top tips, insider secrets and make-up bag must-haves...
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANSING A lot of people don’t realise how important cleansing is. Spend a few minutes massaging your face with cleansing oil, before rinsing off. Make sure it bubbles up and when you rinse, splash 12-15 times to really get rid of that residue. Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil, £24.50 (www.origins.co.uk)
LIPSTICK, CONCEALER AND A BROW PENCIL ARE YOUR MOST IMPORTANT PRODUCTS If your brows are done and skin looks nice, your make-up is 80% finished. USE ICE TO DE-PUFF If you wake up puffy, dunk your face into iced water for 20 seconds and it makes all the difference. It reduces puffiness, tightens pores and wakes you up. You can just use an ice cube or cold water if you prefer.

MAKE YOUR OWN FACE MASK I love sheet masks but I also like making my own. Nothing compares to mixing yogurt and oatmeal together. It can solve any skin problem - acne, dryness, oiliness, dull skin, everything. Just use natural yoghurt and oats.
FOR BUDGET BEAUTY, OPT FOR MAYBELLINE, L’OREAL AND SOAP & GLORY Maybelline makes fantastic concealer - their technology has really stepped up a notch. L’Oreal and Revlon make great foundations and I really love Soap & Glory products, especially their mattifying powders.

I was sent to my local NHS hospital as well as a hospital in London for various tests, all of them came back inconclusive. The whole time I was in agony with my lip, I had to drink everything through a straw and I didn’t want to leave my house because I couldn’t stand the way it looked. My local NHS Hospital decided they’d operate to remove it, unfortunately this left a huge hole in my lip, they tried to stitch it back together but it kept separating. The whole experience had been going on for 5 months and I was truly miserable at the prospect of my lip forever having a hole in it that I wouldn’t be able to hide.” Feeling at her lowest, Emma contacted Spire Harpenden Hospital, her local private hospital, to see what options were available for her. Emma booked an appointment to see Cosmetic Consultant Surgeon, Mr Frederik Schreuder the coming Monday, following her appointment her surgery was scheduled in for that Monday evening. “I was at zero confidence when I went for the appointment and he promised me he’d give me my smile back and he did!” said Emma. Before going for surgery Emma was given all the information she needed to make her decision including an all-inclusive package price so that she knew the costs. Although making the decision to go for surgery was easy, going through with it wasn’t exactly straight forward, Emma explains;
“All the surgery I’ve had has been under local anaesthetic, I have had so many injections I now have a huge fear of them. When they tried to give me the local anaesthetic for my latest operation I totally freaked out. Pippa was my theatre nurse and she was brilliant, she really calmed me down, I held her hand so hard I think I might have broken some fingers! But with her help I was able to go through with the injection and the operation and I’m so glad I did.” “I could tell, even with all the swelling after the operation that Mr Schreuder had done a great job. He was brilliant and I’d recommend him and the hospital to everyone. I had my stitches out a week after the operation and could see what a fantastic job of reconstruction he’d done. He’d rebuilt the whole of my lip.” Emma adds; “I wrote a review on the hospital Facebook page and got the best reply back, it was the highlight of it all! My thanks go to the hospital staff, Mr Schreuder, my D ad and my company for their support throughout it all, now I can get back to normal life with a big smile on my face.” Mr Schreuder said “The moment I met Emma I could see that she had a real problem that needed dealing with urgently. Through teamwork and staff flexibility we were able to offer Emma reconstructive surgery that evening at Spire Harpenden.” He added “I am very pleased that she has made such an excellent recovery.” Spire Harpenden Hospital is located on Ambrose Lane in Harpenden. Self-funding appointments are available and many times a GP referral isn’t necessary. Finance options are available on the majority of our procedures. TRIED AND TESTED Can stick-on patches smooth out wrinkles as effectively as Botox? Sarah Marshall finds out... “Designed to rapidly iron out fine lines, Realine patches claim to act like Botox, but without the needles - or the hefty price tag. There are three types (sold separately), targeting forehead frown lines; under-eye and smile lines; and crow’s feet (my personal bugbear). You pop a patch (or two) on and leave it to work its magic. The frown line patch, which is worn overnight, sticks on easily like Sellotape, but I found the other patches, which were very moist, a bit tricker to keep in place, even for the requisite half an hour. When I peeled them off, though, I was amazed to see instant results, with smooth skin where once there were wrinkles, but the effect was rather shortlived. In the run up to a big event, or if you’re planning a ‘no filter’ selfie binge, it’s worth whacking on a couple of patches, but for long-term results, they’re no match for actual Botox.” Realine Needle Free Freeze Patches, from £28 (www.realinebeauty.com)

IMPROVING, RATHER THAN MOVING STILL SEEMS TO BE THE TREND I
t was not that long ago that Lloyds Bank research showed over 14 million people in the UK have undertaken major work on their current property, or plan to do so within the next year in order to improve or add value to their home. According to the Lloyds Bank study, almost 2.2 million people can’t afford to move, but have instead opted to improve their current house, plus one third of UK homeowners carried out home improvements with the specific aim of adding value to their property. Once homeowners look into the costs of moving, such as the cost of hiring an estate agent, buildings surveyor, mortgage arrangement fees, solicitors, removal company fees, plus various legal fees, including conveyance fees and stamp duty tax, these fees add up to make an already expensive expense even more expensive. The Independent’s home improvement commentators have a different slant on things concluding “Improving your home rather than
8 6 JUNE 2 0 1 7
trading it in for another can be a very good investment. It’s cheaper to make space than buy it.” The comparison website MoneySuperMarket. com suggestion to property owners is that “staying put and extending or changing the layout could prove a cost-effective alternative to changing properties altogether.” Research published by the Halifax Building Society showed that almost 20% of those questioned desire to move into a UK property that requires no home improvements. If this is true, a staggering one in five of the population would prefer to buy a house that needs nothing doing to it, which if they can afford to throw money away like that well OK, but is surely not so sensible a move for hard working middle England who tend to work more hand to mouth. Buying a “ready made” home is often an expensive option, as one either pays a premium to the property developer who built and/or renovated the property, or alternatively a handsome profit to the home owner who did up the property in order
“Homeowners continue to improve rather than move, which is good news at least for the DIY industry”
to gain a substantial return on a relatively modest investment in risk/reward terms. Consequently, is it not far more sensible financially for anyone considering buying a house to instead actually be the property owner who carries out the home improvements, thereby being the ones to benefit from any subsequent increase in property value? With the pace of recovery from the latest recession still painfully slow, and with many householders having less and less disposable income, homeowners continue to improve rather than move, which is good news at least for the DIY industry and the likes of B&Q, Homebase, Screwfix and Wickes. Independent double glazing manufacturers and installers, Hazlemere Windows have seen an increasing number of property owners enquiring about replacement double glazed windows and doors for their extension and/or loft conversion. In addition, growing families are looking into the feasibility of adding a conservatory or orangery onto their house to provide much needed extra high quality living space, be it a kitchen/diner, gym, home office, play room, dining room or enlarged living room. Building a conservatory or hybrid orangery can be more aesthetically pleasing than a full blown brick built extension with a tiled or flat roof. Despite the changes to the Building Regulations that came into effect on 1st October 2010, and the new legal requirement that all UK property owners (replacing any existing window(s) and/or door(s), or indeed building an extension) must now fit compliant higher performing thermally efficient fenestration products, it is still easier and less costly to obtain the necessary permissions to build a conservatory. Plus as long as Building Regulations are not required, it is usually far quicker to obtain all appropriate legal approvals to add a conservatory to your property, as long as you don’t live in a flat that has no outdoor ground level space! Also a UPVC or aluminium double glazed conservatory is much less expensive to build and available for home owners to utilise as additional living space a lot sooner than an actual extension that requires both time consuming planning permission and Building Regulatory Approval, plus signing off by a Building Control Officer from your local planning department when finished. Building an extension that matches in, loft conversion or conservatory will add value to any home; whilst at the same time provide invaluable extra living space. These types of home improvement options done professionally to a high standard are far less costly than the massive expense of moving house, especially when you take into account legal fees, so is it no surprise that so many UK property owners decide to improve rather than move. To find out what the potential home improvement options and budget costs are

Our love of Scandi interiors shows no sign of waning - but that doesn’t mean you can’t update the theme. Gabrielle Fagan turns to home style blogger and author Niki Brantmark for inspiration
Scandi Love
I
t’s hard to escape Scandinavia’s influence on our lives - and it’s in our living rooms that it’s really made its mark. That uber-cool blend of clean lines, simple shapes and beautifullydesigned functional furniture adds up to a sophisticated, elegant look that’s proved irresistible. But just as the Scandi buzzword-of-the-moment has moved on from the Danish ‘hygge’ to the Swedish ‘lagom’ – which means ‘just the right amount’ – the vibe in interiors has evolved too, making way for more balanced, pared-back style, where comfort and quality reign supreme. That ‘less is more’ vision is perfectly understood by Niki Brantmark, a Londoner who moved to Sweden more than a decade ago. The move inspired her blog, My Scandinavian Home – and now her new book, The Scandinavian Home, opens the door to a host of distinctive spaces, including dreamy log cabins. “Scandinavian homes are renowned for their clean lines and muted colours and there’s a wonderful ease in the way they create them and apply their innate
sense of style,” Brantmark enthuses. “In general, they believe it’s better to take time layering their homes with items that tell a story and have a sense of purpose. It all helps to make their settings unique and filled with personality and beauty.” The huge popularity of the Scandi look means it can be created quickly and easily, or you can follow a more measured approach, and take your time collecting one-off finds and heirloom pieces.
SCANDI STYLE RULES Follow Niki Brantmark’s guide to creating Scandi-style decor... • Keep the look clean and fuss-free, focusing on straight lines and simple shapes. “In many homes, whether urban, country or rural dwellings, you will find only a few beautifully crafted, high-quality iconic design pieces, alongside antiques and flea market finds, all made from natural, sustainable sources.” • Stick to light, muted colours, such as white, light grey and blue, for a calm look and feel. “The 8 8 JUNE 2 0 1 7

preference is for light wood floors and white walls and ceilings which reflect the light.” • Leave windows as unobscured as possible to allow natural light to fill the room. “Scandinavians are inspired by light, having an abundance of it in summer, but so little of it in winter, so house design tends to maximise the natural light flow with large windows.” • Create interest using different textures, such as marble, wood and stone. “Nature and weather are major influences, as homes have to be made warm and cosy, not simply with log burning stoves, but also through incorporating earthy colour tones and natural materials from wood to leather, to soften the clean lines of the architecture.” • Add layers of soft materials such as cotton, linen and sheepskin, for a warm and inviting space. “Nordic principles are largely to do with quiet, understated aesthetics and surroundings,” says Kasia Wiktorowicz, at paint specialists, Valspar. “Muted mid-tones, like shades of grey, caramel or soft blue, are restful yet interesting, and help create a clean and balanced design. Chalky whites also blend quietly with these colours, so you are left with a calming interior that will rejuvenate your mind after a busy day.” “Choose a soft neutral shade for your flooring, which could be wood flooring or tile,” says Jemma Dayman, assistant buyer, Carpetright. “It’s all about introducing different tones of colour, and sheepskins or wool rugs are perfect for this look, which could be in pale hues or, for more practicality but still appropriate, earthy shades.” Statement lights are a feature in a pared back setting, and a selection of pendant lights hung over a table, unified by colour, attract the eye upwards and define a dining area, and there are many furniture companies specialising in Scandinavian style, with furniture and sheepskin rugs. “Using an interior designer can help you to realise your own ideas far more effectively”
Beautiful design by Beverley Barnett Just by talking to Beverley you can see how much she loves her profession.
W
ith a career now spanning over 30 years, Beverley first started in Interior Design with the prestigious Colefax & Fowler. She went on to establish her own business and is a highly respected member of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID). Being a member of the BIID means that Beverley is qualified by training and experience to plan and supervise the design and execution of interiors and furnishings - and to organise the various arts and crafts essential to their completion. In order to join the BIID, an applicant must fulfil stringent entry requirements. This means not only demonstrating artistic ability, but also proving an established business of several years’ standing and operating in a professional manner. Most of the work that Beverley has undertaken has been in private homes, throughout the UK and worldwide. The styles have been as diverse, ranging from contemporary apartments in the city to traditional country homes. She admits that she can indulge her passion for traditional design and ultra modern minimalism, without losing sight of the fact that her clients’ homes are an extension of their personalities. She recognises that she is called upon to interpret their wishes and eliminate any potential stress and trauma that can occur when clients attempt to handle projects on their own. Pivotal to Beverley’s success is the relationship she forms with her clients. She is very aware that 9 2 JUNE 2 0 1 7
the relationship between an interior designer and her client often becomes one of the most personal outside the immediate family. Whether you choose a designer by recommendation, local research or a follow-up having seen the result of their work, the rapport with your designer establishes itself very quickly. This client/designer empathy is intrinsic to the success of any project. Far from indicating a lack of taste or initiative, using an interior designer can help you to realise your own ideas far more effectively and quickly than going it alone. As Beverley explains: “A designer is also significantly less expensive than you might imagine, saving you from making those costly mistakes.” Beverley never imposes her ideas upon her clients. Instead, she will devote the time carefully listening to their likes and dislikes and then works with them to create an environment that is truly ‘theirs’. Her ability to listen ensures that she interprets clients’ requirements effectively and efficiently. By using an interior designer of Beverley’s standing, you can be assured that the re-design of your home will be an enjoyable experience. And if the need is to extend the service to the garden and surrounding areas, you can be completely confident that the same level of expertise will be available for you. So if you want to bring a breath of fresh air into your home , just ring Beverley on 01923 857029 or visit her website www.beverleybarnett.co.uk

The Seasons of Origin With hot Summer months on the horizon, now is the ideal time to make use of an indoor swimming pool. However, these fantastic leisure facilities are the perfect addition to a family home all year round. Origin, the UK’s original luxury indoor pool company, considers the different ways to make the most of your pool house during every season.
Summer As temperatures rise, a pool offers a welcome relief from the heat. It is a fun and relaxing space providing entertainment for each member of the family. Bi-fold doors bring the outdoors in, connecting your pool with the garden. By opening them up you create a natural breeze and can privately catch the sun as you lay poolside. When it comes to entertainment, a pool house certainly adds the wow factor to any BBQ. Whether it be a children’s party or an evening in with friends, hosting gatherings in the pool house is sure to put a smile on your guest’s faces.
Autumn
Winter
As Autumn leaves make their first appearance, gaze out at the spectacular scenery from the comfort of your pool house. Or even better, turn it into a social venue and have friends around to enjoy the views whilst you cook up some treats in the fully fitted kitchen, or prepare Autumn cocktails in the bar. These remarkable leisure facilities help you to maintain a workout regime all year-round. For children, it might be a quick dip after school, while you can jump in and refresh after a session in the gym.
Increase the temperature of your pool and it becomes a great place to spend time during the cold winter months. Instead of heading away from home to find a fun activity that accommodates the whole family, go to the pool for the day. As the children play in the pool, adults can either relax in the spa pool, use the gym or watch the TV in the seating area. It really is an entertainment space for everyone.
Spring Wave goodbye to Winter and open the pool house doors because Spring is on the way! Relax after a long day and watch the evenings pass by, whether that be from the inbuilt bar, the spa pool or simply sitting on the decking outside. To speak to the Origin experts please contact 01895 453996

he Denham Film Studios is a very unique and historic development for Weston Homes which comprises of 224 new homes. The 12 acre Art-Deco inspired development has been designed around the main listed building which was originally built in the 1930’s and now is home to 49, one, two and three bedroom apartments. The remainder of the development will be new build properties and green spaces allowing 154 apartments and 70 houses in total. The listed building’s status means the scale of the flats far exceeds modern minimum standards with one bedroom flats averaging 600 sqft and two bedroom flats ranging from 750 sqft up to 1,300 sqft with exquisite ceiling heights of up to 11ft 6in. Located within the picturesque village of Denham, in the Buckinghamshire countryside, The Denham Film Studios is the perfect mix for commuters who want the country lifestyle while being only 20 minutes train journey into London
Marylebone Station. The original listed building was designed by Walter Gropius for the producer and founder, Alexander Korda and comprised of two cinemas used to screen Oscar winning movies to Hollywood Directors such as, Stanley Kubrick, Albert ‘Cubby’ Broccoli and Steven Spielberg. Weston Homes have elegantly restored one of the Art Deco screening rooms into the on-site Cinema, with 32 original sofa-style chairs, while the other screening room has been transformed into a resident’s cocktail bar. Both of these excellent facilities will be for use by Resident’s only allowing them to relive the history of the building. There will also be a communal room in the centre of the development for residents. Movies produced and edited at the studios include Goodbye Mr Chips, In which we serve, Brief Encounter, Treasure Island, The Great Escape, Clash of the Titans, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and Alien. More recently,
Tomorrow Never Dies, ET, Superman 1,2 & 3, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Full Metal Jacket, GoldenEye, War Horse, Eyes Wide Shut, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall were produced at the historic former film studios. The local council has also agreed for the buildings and streets within the development to be named after the movies, film directors and actors who once worked at the studios to continue the history this site holds. These include Korda House, Saltzman House, Stanley Kubrick Road, Greer Garson Road, Albert Broccoli Road, Celia Johnson Close and Noel Coward Avenue. One, two and three bedrooms are currently for sale in the Main Listed Building with prices starting from £350,000 for a 1 bed and £450,000 for a 2 bed. The release of new build apartments and houses will follow later in the year. The first occupancy on this distinctive development will be taking place in the listed building by July 2017.
