European and Commonwealth 200m Silver medallist Jodie Williams from Hertfordshire is training hard towards being part of Team GB for the Rio Olympics in August. Born in Welwyn Garden City, Jodie was an exceptional junior with Championship wins including becoming World and European Junior Champion in 2010. On becoming a senior athlete, although experiencing a number of injuries, Jodie went on to win European and Commonwealth Silver in 2014. We were able to catch up with Jodie during one of her regular sessions at the Perfect Balance Clinic in Hatfield, finding out about her passion for athletics and her Olympic training progress.

Celebrating 50 years of Brickendon Grange Golf Club

016 marks the 50th anniversary of Brickendon Grange Golf Club and they are going all out to celebrate this milestone. Throughout the year they will be celebrating their Golden Jubilee with numerous social and golf events. The main celebration will be the Golden Jubilee Week 23rd- 30th July. As well as the 50th anniversary, 2016 is also a major year for the club in other ways. This year the club is establishing itself as a fantastic private event venue for: Wedding Receptions, conferences, special occasions and funeral receptions. The 19th Century Manor Clubhouse offers stunning views of the club’s Country setting; with 3 charming function rooms available for hire. Celebrating Luton Hoo’s Capability Brown Landscape
This year sees a national celebration of Capability Brown’s tercentenary and many of his stately gardens and parks are in the spotlight including Luton Hoo. The magnificent parkland and formal gardens at Luton Hoo are the legacy of this great English landscape designer and are now admired and enjoyed by many guests, especially in summer. Head Gardener, Keith Hersey, has worked on the estate for over 35 years and has seen the gardens and grounds through a massive restoration project when Elite Hotels purchased the estate to open Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa. uropean and Commonwealth 200m Silver medallist Jodie Williams is training hard towards being part of Team GB for the Rio Olympics in August. Born in Welwyn Garden City, Jodie was an exceptional junior with Championship wins including becoming World and European Junior Champion in 2010. On becoming a senior athlete, although experiencing a number of injuries, Jodie went on to win European and Commonwealth Silver in 2014. We were able to catch up with Jodie during one of her regular sessions at the Perfect Balance Clinic in Hatfield, finding out about her passion for athletics and her Olympic training progress.
What is your first memory of doing athletics?
It is in Primary School, in year 4, racing for a place at the district schools event. I remember slowing down so that I wouldn’t beat the older children because I didn’t want them to dislike me!
Was it a passion from an early age?
Yes very much so. I told my mum when I was 5 that I wanted to be an Olympic Champion. I haven’t stopped since!
As a successful junior athlete, did you feel the pressure on becoming a senior?
Yes there was definitely a huge amount of pressure on me but most of it I put on myself. I always want to be best and push myself as hard as I can.
What support team do you have around you?
I have a great support team around me. Since turning down lottery funding the biggest gap to fill was my treatment needs. The team at Perfect Balance Clinic, Hatfield take care of all my physio, soft tissue and strength and conditioning. They have been a huge help in filling that gap. From their expertise and support plus their work with my track coach Ryan Freckleton means I am a lot stronger.
With the Olympics in Rio just months away, how are you feeling?
It’s all very exciting, I’m feeling good and training has been going really well. I’ve been injury free the whole season which is a real confidence booster.
What does a normal day’s training involve?
A normal days training involves a 10am start on the track, depending on what session I am doing, this lasts around 2 ½ hours. I then go on to the gym for an hour’s session before heading home to refuel! You have incurred a number of injuries over the last few years, how do you keep so mentally strong? I don’t know if it’s a case of being mentally strong. Those that work closely with me know that I struggled through all of the injuries especially the more recent ones. In my head, this is my job, there is nothing else that I have ever wanted to do, so I just have to pick myself up, dust myself off and keep going until I get it right.
How do you prepare before a Championship race?
Usually championships are in the evening so I try and sleep as late as I can. I make sure I fuel myself

properly. A few hours from the race I will put my headphones on and start tuning in to the race. Once the hard work and hopefully success is over in Rio, where would you like to visit whilst there? I will definitely try to make time! I think the most obvious one would be to see Christ the Redeemer and generally soak in the atmosphere of Rio. ow that the English summer is finally upon us, along with the realisation that the weather will never be as nice as we hoped, it’s time for holidays! Whether a city break with a roof-top pool or an all-inclusive beach resort, good swimming apparel is always needed. Now there are many types of swim short around and it’s just as beneficial to dress for your surrounding as much as dressing for an evening out. It’s not as easy as throwing on some board shorts and jumping in the pool; many places limit your dress code for surrounding bars and restaurants…something which sparked the imagination of photographer Adam Brown. “In 2005 I went on holiday to celebrate a friend’s 40th birthday in Rajasthan. There were 30 people in the group aged between 25 – 50 years old. Most of them worked in design, took an interest in clothing – but were not obsessed by fashion. Around the pool, the women in the group looked great, but the men did not. All were wearing brightly patterned, baggy boxer short styles, briefs or board shorts. The idea for Orlebar Brown became clear when sitting by the pool – we had to change to have lunch in the bar.” Based in London, Orlebar Brown launched in March 2007 as a more tailored approach to men’s beach and swim shorts. Not so much a swim short but a ‘short you can swim in’, offering something you can wear on the beach, by the pool and then smart enough to go and have a drink or lunch. BBC Proms 2016: from Boulez to Bowie Friday 15 July – Saturday 10 September

he BBC Proms have announced the programme for its 122nd season featuring more than 90 concerts over eight weeks, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. New Proms Director David Pickard introduces an innovative series Proms at... that explores spaces outside the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall. The series matches music to four venues across London with Shakespeareinspired works by Purcell at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe in Southwark, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle at The Chapel, Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the music of Steve Reich at the Bold Tendencies multi-storey car park in Peckham, and the return of the Proms to the Roundhouse in Camden with new work by British composer David Sawer. Four-hundred years since the death of Shakespeare, the Proms marks the anniversary with a broad survey of music inspired by the Bard, from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet to Hans Abrahamsen’s ‘let me tell you’ and extracts from Kiss Me, Kate. In the year in which the Olympics are staged in Brazil, the Proms celebrates the music and musicians of Latin America with performances from the São Paulo and Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestras, pianists Martha Argerich and Gabriela Montero, conductors Daniel Barenboim and Gustavo Dudamel, cellist Sol Gabetta, and Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, who appears at the Last Night of the Proms. A vital part of the Proms mission remains, bringing classical music to new audiences; youth music-making and youth audiences are a major focus this year. The hugely popular CBeebies Proms return, and there will be two Proms devoted to BBC Music’s Ten Pieces II, part of a ground-breaking nationwide initiative for schools designed to open up the world of classical music to primary and secondary school children. In the year that we lost two musical pioneers, the Proms pays tribute to Pierre Boulez and David Bowie in two Late Night concerts. Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sakari Oramo, opens and closes the festival, and in the 50th anniversary year of

My very own facelift procedure (It’s non-surgical!) I just look so old. The market’s full of youngsters in their 20s, I can’t believe that any interviewer will take me seriously
W
hen Susanna came to see me she was stuck in a rut. In her mid-40s, she had been working as a supply teacher for several years. Although she was desperate to apply for more permanent and more senior jobs, she lacked the self-confidence to do so. Susanna was convinced that the loose skin on her face made her look far older than she really was, and that interviewers would discriminate against her because of her age. While she was desperate for a cosmetic procedure to tighten her skin and restore her looks, she was also very nervous about her pupils and colleagues knowing she’d had work done. It was vital, she said, that any change was as subtle as possible. In the meanwhile, she scoured the industry press for adverts for permanent teaching positions – and applied for none of them. It was around that time that I finished developing my very own non-surgical face-lifting technique, called the R-Lift. It is so revolutionary that, I’m delighted to announce, last month we received a trademark for it! I started thinking about the technique four years ago, when I began seeing lots of people with what I call “the pillow look”. Their cheeks had been filled out in an effort to lift their skin, making them look, to my mind, a bit like hamsters. It was trendy at the time (!), but I knew that it wasn’t right for our patients, who wanted a much more natural look. Over the subsequent 18 months, I worked to develop a procedure that gave the same effect as a facelift, but without patients having to go under the knife; using a minimum number of needles; and at a fraction of the cost. Most importantly, it needed to leave patients looking normal – not fake. With the R-Lift we inject small amounts of dermal
fillers into as few as two points on either side of the face. Unlike ordinary fillers, we run a cannula beneath the skin’s surface, to release the fibrous bands that fuse skin to muscle and this fades deep wrinkles. The minimal use of needles means pain is unlikely 99% of patients don’t require any anesthetic and bruising is extremely rare. It also meant we could keep the cost down to £900 at the lower end. And the results? The R-Lift refreshes and restores your skin, making you look younger – but still like you. People won’t know you’ve had anything done, they’ll just think you’re looking great. Take Susana. She had the R-Lift about 18 months ago, and hasn’t looked back since. Within weeks, she noticed such a difference that she had the confidence and self-assurance to apply for the jobs she had previously shied away from. That insecure and selfdoubting teacher who had approached me months before was given a permanent teaching job soon after. ark Twain famously described hydrotherapy as “so enjoyable that if I hadn’t had a disease I would have borrowed one just to have a pretext for going on.” Modern hydrotherapy can benefit people in the same way it soothed Twain’s rheumatism, as many of the patients using Spire Harpenden’s hydrotherapy pool know well. By immersing the body in water, pressure is taken off painful or stiff joints, allowing greater movement and over time muscle strength can be rebuilt. The temperature of the pool is kept at 34-35°C, just below body temperature, which eases joint pain and ensures that you will be comfortable in the water. Alan Hawes is received treatment at Spire Harpenden’s hydrotherapy pool due to a car accident and chronic arthritis, which makes walking on land “too harsh”. Alan likened the weightless feeling of the hydrotherapy pool to “being on the moon”. It gives him much greater movement and freedom, allowing him to even ride a bike in the pool – something he could never do without the support of the water. Peter Dunkley used the self-help hydrotherapy sessions at Spire Harpenden Hospital. He describes the service as “fantastic” and really values this “low-impact, enjoyable method of exercising”. Peter came to Spire after his second hip replacement, as he was keen to keep up his fitness levels after his operation. Both Peter and Alan use Spire Harpenden Hospital’s Self Help sessions, which are perfect for those who have had previous hydrotherapy experience, and are able to manage their own exercises. Sessions last for approximately 30 minutes, during which time you will be supervised poolside by a hydrotherapy assistant. Other patients use hydrotherapy before a hip or knee replacement, allowing them to strengthen muscles without stressing the joint – which can result in a quicker recovery from this major surgery. Spire Harpenden Hospital has a fully purpose built hydrotherapy suite, which is staffed by qualified and friendly physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants.

Self-help sessions are open to anyone to book, or alternatively you can be referred by your physiotherapist, GP or Consultant. When booking your place we will ensure that hydrotherapy is right for you. You will start with a consultation with a physiotherapist who will assess your needs, charged at £100. You will then be advised as to whether a self-help or a physiotherapist led session is right for you. Spire Harpenden Hospital offers both physiotherapistled hydrotherapy sessions, and self-help sessions managed by a hydrotherapy assistant. Physiotherapist-led sessions are charged at £64 for a half hour session, and self-help sessions are £15 per half hour. Secondary Glazing – A Sound Decision? school playgrounds, noisy neighbours, local industry, loud annoying neighbours’ pets or busy high streets. What is “secondary glazing” I hear you say? Most modern secondary glazing is basically one pane of glass (or in rare cases two panes of glass) held within a powder coated aluminium frame (usually white), that is fitted on the inside of an existing external single or double glazed window, usually fixed within the existing window reveal, that sits on the internal window cill or window board, and is then sealed all round and trimmed as if it was an external window. Secondary glazing is available in several different opening styles: horizontal sliding; vertical sliding; sidehinged; lift-out and fixed. For optimum sound reduction performance secondary glazing should be installed at least 100mm from the existing window frame. The downside of this is that you do lose a substantial proportion of your window cill, but the upside is the dramatic reduction in external noise. Please don’t be conned into believing any secondary glazing system will sound proof your room, as it won’t. Sound can travel through pipes, gaps beneath the skirting, air bricks and through walls, especially if the cavities have not been filled with foam insulation. Standard secondary glazing is however the best value for money sound reduction product for windows and doors. If fitted correctly and in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions, then it is a far more effective sound reduction tool than replacement double or triple glazing.

lthough not offering all of the features of modern double or triple glazed windows, secondary glazing is still a popular option for many UK home owners, especially for those that live in listed buildings or conservation areas and for those whose properties are next to busy roads where noise pollution is a particular issue. Secondary glazing is not limited to dwellings that have restrictions, as many a home owner or tenant has benefitted both thermally and sound insulation wise by having secondary glazing fitted, where for example they may have particular issues with say aircraft noise, local 66 JUNE 2016
Yes it is true triple glazing offers more sound reduction than double glazing, as it has a 3rd pane of glass for sound to have to travel through, but again don’t be conned, as the improvement between double glazing and triple glazing is only about 2 decibels, not enough for you to notice the difference audibly.
If you are considering having secondary glazing professionally fitted, make sure you choose the right type of frame and glass for each room Also, secondary glazing makes a massive difference thermally, especially if your property only has single glazing, but even if it has double glazing, secondary glazing will help reduce your energy bills, as it will help retain the warmth generated by your heating system. Security wise secondary glazing adds a second barrier to any attempts by intruders to get into your property, especially if you ask for 4mm or even 6mm thick toughened safety glass to be fitted in your secondary glazing. In-fact you can kill two birds with one stone if you specify slightly more expensive 6.4mm laminate glass, as not only is this glass hard to break, it further reduces the amount of external sound that travels through your external 4mm glass panes due to the fact that it is of a greater thickness. Experienced companies who have installed secondary glazing for decades will be able to advise you on the best type of secondary glazing system and glass to suit your particular property or situation. They should also try to ensure the sections of the horizontal or vertical secondary windows mirror your exterior windows, so that from outside passers-by cannot tell that you have secondary glazing installed in your home. Although you can pay extra to have coloured aluminium secondary glazed frames, most secondary that is fitted comes in white as this tends to match in with the majority of peoples internal dĂŠcor. Single glazed horizontal sliding and vertical sliding window frames normally come set in a MDF timber sub-frame, which can then be painted to match the colour of the window reveals or rest of the room. Unlike external double or triple glazing, secondary glazing can be easily removed if required, with simple re-decoration all that is needed to restore the look of the window reveals. Secondary glazing from the inside may not be as nice looking as external windows, but the thermal barrier and sound barrier benefits it provides off-sets any aesthetic disadvantages.
There are many types of secondary glazing including very thin aluminium frames that can be screwed directly into the external frames. Whilst this is the cheapest form of secondary glazing, as these frames don’t have a subframe, it is the least effective both thermally and from a sound reduction point of view, as there is little or no gap between the external pane and the secondary pane, plus there is no thermal break. If you are considering having secondary glazing professionally fitted, make sure you choose the right type of frame and glass for each room, as in the vast majority of cases, you will want access to the external glass to clean or to be able to open any external vents to allow ventilation. Getting a proper job done secondary glazing wise could end up being one of the soundest decisions you ever make, as your property will then benefit from both sound reduction and lower energy bills.
