NEW HYBRID CHARTER MARKET TO BE LAUNCHED IN SEPTEMBER

H

istoric St Albans Charter Market is to be relaunched in a new hybrid form involving a mixture of traditional stalls and gazebos.

Stalls in the City’s famous blue and yellow colours will provide the Market’s central core while similarly branded gazebos will be set up nearby.

The aim is to create a harmonious look with some traders being allowed to bring their own gazebos and food trucks to positions on the fringes.

St Albans City and District Council manages the twice-weekly Market and has been examining its future following the pandemic.

It has decided on the hybrid format after consulting with traders, shoppers and other interested groups with the Market relaunching on Wednesday 7 September.

Councillor Robert Donald, Chair of the Regeneration and Business Committe, said: “I’m absolutely delighted we are finally able to push forward with a hybrid Market.

“We’ll now have the best of both worlds – the reassuring sight of the return of stalls in uniform St Albans heritage colours in St Peters Street together with gazebos.”

To provide the hybrid Market, 80 new stalls will be purchased by the Council to replace the current ones which are run-down while 35 gazebos have already been bought.

One or two trailers, required to transport the new equipment from storage to the Market site, will be acquired to replace the 16 vehicles that were previously used.

Tenders are being sought for a contractor to put up and dismantle the Market stalls and gazebos.

This task was undertaken by the Council’s own workforce before the pandemic when only gazebos brought by the traders were allowed to reduce the risk of COVID contamination.

Councillor Donald added: “Our Charter Market dates back centuries. It is one of our City’s great attractions and we are determined to ensure it has a sustainable and exciting future ahead of it.”

A visual chronicle of the storied jeweller since its founding in New York City in 1837, “Vision & Virtuosity” takes visitors on a journey through everything from archival high jewellery designs, Tiffany’s famed window displays and its recently acquired Empire Diamond of over 80 carats to important relics of popular culture such as the original script from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It is a celebration of Tiffany’s authority as the purveyor of the world’s finest diamonds and a showcase of how two core values—vision and virtuosity—have guided the House for 185 years.

The Monaco Yacht Show takes its

“seducation” approach into 2022

T

he Monaco Yacht Show has announced new developments in its themed exhibition areas, once again proving its will to immerse visitors in the world of superyachting.

The 2022 edition is set to confirm the status of the MYS’s “seducation” programme, which was launched last year. This three-year plan of action is designed to attract a new generation of yachting clients, thanks to two core concepts: “education” and “seduction” (aka “seducation”).

Education: meeting trade experts in themed exhibition areas The show’s themed exhibition areas have been redistributed more efficiently, making it easier for the new wave of yachting customers to meet experts in their respective fields and to discover the range of products and services required to successfully complete their yachting project.

The organisers are therefore revamping the

Dockside Area, the Sailing Yacht Area and the Yacht Design & Innovation Hub, all three of which were launched in 2021.

Be it in the water or on the docks, the Dockside Area features superyachts, tenders and all manner of services directly related to the world of yachting. Visitors can meet the shipbrokers, shipyards and designers who worked on the various yachts on display.

The Sailing Yacht Area will be relocated to Quai l’Hirondelle, on the inner side of Port Hercule.

The Yacht Design & Innovation Hub dedicated to future yacht design projects - is set to triple in size, including a 100-m² upstairs conference area.

Says Stephanie Allison: “Little Women has resonated with both of us for years; the themes of family, love and coming of age Alcott explored over a century ago still exist today. At the time Little Women was rare in that the story centred around women and gave space to their journey; although modern expectations for women have changed a great deal often they’re still expected to occupy the traditional role of mother and caregiver. As Jo and her sisters navigate growing up, the challenges they face and overcome are ones many of our audience will recognise or have been through.”

PALOMA FAITH Interview by Kristan J Caryl

E

arlier in the year, Paloma Faith was at a British Vogue Fashion & Film Party in aid of the Ukraine crisis. She met one of her heroines, Malala Yousafzai, and cried because she was “overcome to be in the room with such greatness.” Despite the grandeur of the occasion, the party was cut short.

“I’m like Cinderella,” she says over Zoom the morning after. “I always have to leave by midnight because my kids wake up at 7 am whether I like it or not.” She might be a double platinum-selling, BRIT award-winning pop star to most of us, but to her two children she is simply ‘mum’. When asked if switching between the two is easy, Paloma matter-of-factly says, “no!” but with a signature infectious laugh.

Despite being a commercially successful and mainstream pop star, Paloma has never shied away from telling it how it is. Her confessional BBC documentary ‘Paloma Faith: As I Am’ earlier this year picked up plenty of critical acclaim for its honest discussions around motherhood. Her most recent album, 2020’s Infinite Things, also touches on those issues with tracks like ‘Me Time’ frankly addressing the realities of parenthood with lyrics such as “I need some me time, figuring out who I want to be time… shut the door and I just want to scream time”.

“I do feel guilty about that,” she says during a rare break as her youngest child takes their morning nap. “I think that’s one of the massive problems being a parent. You can feel like maybe your identity is not conducive to, or doesn’t correlate with, how you perceive parenting should be. Like this morning, I went to a baby group, and

it was so, well, I was like, what am I doing? This just isn’t my tribe.”

Of course, the diminutive powerhouse feels much more at home on stage. This summer she embarks on a 23-date tour with big outdoor shows at places such as Campbell Park in Milton Keynes on July 17th and Hatfield Park on August 5th with support with James Morrison and Eurovision hero, Sam Ryder, respectively. Her last tour in 2021 was blighted by personal issues as well as the Covid pandemic which meant team members were constantly dropping in and out, so she is more excited than ever to be back on the road in more normal circumstances.

“There is nothing like singing and having people singing back to me,” she beams. “I think that the beauty of live performance is when it’s really real and true to that day, true to how I feel at that moment. I don’t do fully choreographed shows, they’re never the same, and I think that’s why a lot of people throughout the years have bought multiple tickets to loads of dates because they know that it’s always different and they don’t want to miss anything.”

Her children won’t miss anything either. Because they are so young, they will be on the road and in fact, “really love” sleeping on the tour bus. And so will her mum. “She always comes, she loves a trip!”

Although some of us might feel self-conscious singing lyrics like “I’m insatiable and I know it’s wrong” or “New lover made me downright restless... We’d be rude, and be crude” in front of our mums or kids, Paloma will not. She stands by what she writes.

“I’ve always felt socially responsible,” she says.

“That doesn’t change because I have become a parent. I’ve always known what I write will have an impact.” She does concede, though, that she is seeing herself reflected back in her elder child more and more. “She’s very sweet but very bossy!”

With the newfound responsibility of parenthood comes a new level of maturity as an artist. That was born out with the masterclass songwriting of her album - which was the first Paloma engineered entirely on her own, and her first to make the Number 1 spot in the UK Album Chart - but is also sure to play out on stage this summer. “Touring is the only reason I do this job,” she says before the sound of a crying baby whisks her back to reality.

he value of the Queen’s UK property portfolio has reached new heights in 2022, with the figure more than £3billion according to a new study.

Research has estimated that Her Majesty’s royal property portfolio may be worth up to £3.7 billion, with royal residences including castles, palaces and luxurious lodges across London and the UK. The study, from retirement property experts McCarthy Stone, uncovered the costs of the Sovereign’s London homes as the UK celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June, looking at how much it would cost to buy or rent the spectacular British landmarks.

The cost to buy London’s royal residences Buckingham Palace, the most famous royal residence and one of the UK’s most attractive tourist attractions, is unsurprisingly the priciest property in the Queen’s portfolio and is estimated at £1.3bn.

The second most expensive London property is St James’s Palace, priced at £600m. Next is Kensington Palace, which comprises of multiple apartments. It’s grand architecture, royal history and Kensington and Chelsea postcode have helped the palace reach an estimated £558.2m in total value.

The cost to rent the royal residences Buckingham Palace’s location, alongside the sheer size and historical value, could see a tenant paying an estimated £2.6m per month in rent. Kensington Palace, If the Queen were a regular landlord, Prince William and Kate may pay around £179,400 in rent per month to live in their apartment at the central London residence.

However, Nottingham Cottage, a twobedroom property nestled within the grounds of Kensington Palace, has been estimated to have tHe most affordable rent of all the residences. ‘Nott Cott’, the former home to both William and Kate, and later Harry and Meghan, could expect £7,900 in rent per month.

ashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear is the first major V&A exhibition to celebrate the power, artistry and diversity of masculine attire and appearance.

The show traces how menswear has been fashioned and refashioned over the centuries, and how designers, tailors and artists – and their clients and sitters – have constructed and performed masculinity, and unpicked it at the seams. Fashioning Masculinities presents around 100 looks and 100 artworks, displayed thematically across three galleries - Undressed, Overdressed, and Redressed.

Contemporary looks by legendary designers and rising stars are displayed alongside historical treasures from the V&A’s collections and landmark loans: classical sculptures, Renaissance paintings, iconic photographs, and powerful film and performance.

Outfits worn by familiar faces are interspersed throughout, from Harry Styles, Billy Porter and Sam Smith to David Bowie and Marlene Dietrich.

Innovative creations and diverse representations highlight and celebrate the multiplicities of masculine sartorial self-expression, dressing beyond the binary.

Fashioning Masculinities opened with a Craig Green SS2021 ensemble of a deconstructed suit, alluding to the construction and deconstruction of both the masculine body and conventions of masculinity, a theme that is central throughout the show.

Undressed will explore the male body and underwear in a utopian dreamscape, whilst Overdressed will take visitors into the elite masculine wardrobe in a sumptuous, immersive space with courtly grandeur, featuring oversized silhouettes, abundant colour, and lavish materials.

Redressed includes a section on leather showing how designers like Tom Ford for Gucci and Donatella Versace took their interest to a new place, whilst a series of frock coats from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day include examples

by Prada, Alexander McQueen and Raf Simons.

And alongside is extensive photography showing changing styles and attitudes, from Oscar Wilde, Claude Cahun and Cecil Beaton to The Beatles and Sam Smith.

A visual chronicle of the storied jeweller since its founding in New York City in 1837, “Vision & Virtuosity” takes visitors on a journey through everything from archival high jewellery designs, Tiffany’s famed window displays and its recently acquired Empire Diamond of over 80 carats to important relics of popular culture such as the original script from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Upon entering Saatchi Gallery, guests will explore founder Charles Lewis Tiffany’s legacy and, in the subsequent sections, experience the works of some of the House’s most creative forces such as Jean Schlumberger and Elsa Peretti. The third

Prepping for Exam Results this Summer

R

esults day 2022 will see the first set of GCSE and A level exam results awarded to pupils since the pandemic took hold back in 2020. This year’s Year 11 and Year 13 cohorts are currently kneedeep in revision and are busily sitting their exams.

With the end of term in sight and the long summer wait ahead, the Academic Director at an independent day and boarding school in Bushey has shared some useful advice for pupils and parents to help them to prepare for the day when it comes.

With adjustments to coursework, foresight of key topics and advance notification and provision of materials, many steps have been taken to level the playing field for pupils returning to official examinations this year.

In 2019, around 20% of all GCSE grades were at grade 7 and above. In 2021, when candidates were awarded Teacher Assessed Grades, this rose to around 30%. Ofqual’s intention is to gradually return the examination standard to pre-pandemic levels, with this summer’s results pitched at a halfway point between 2019 and 2021. This means results day 2022 should see pupils graded more generously than in 2019, but less generously than in 2021.

For pupils opening their envelopes this summer, the big picture maths of these decisions will undoubtedly seem cold and distant. Year 11 and

Year 13 pupils have watched their older peers go through the uncertainty of the last two years.

Indeed, Year 13 experienced the shutdown of their schools shortly before their GCSEs, with the changes in policy around grading by algorithm in summer 2020, and as a result, they will not have had the processes and experiences of results day modelled for them by their peers. Therefore, this summer, notions of fairness will feel particularly stretched and families should seek the close guidance of their children’s teachers and Heads of Department.

If a result doesn’t seem right or fair, pupils are entitled to receive copies of their scripts, and to ask that the marking of their scripts be reviewed.

Your child’s teacher will be best placed to suggest whether the mark they have received warrants an official review. Examiners too, have been out of practice for the last two years, and in some subjects, they are in short supply.

Most important of all, all pupils should try to visit their school in person on results day. Most schools will make results available electronically; however, the guidance your school can provide in-person on the day is invaluable. Making quick decisions about how best to take action, is undoubtedly easier if pupils are able to talk around these decisions with the staff who have taught them face to face. stmargarets-school.org.uk

Each vehicle accommodates between six and eight pupils, and we aim for a journey time of no more than an hour. In the evenings, transport departs Queenswood at 6:00pm (Monday to Thursday) and 4:30pm (Friday). This later departure time allows pupils to participate in our extensive after-school activity programme and complete their homework in a supervised environment. There’s even a smartphone app to keep parents informed while the vehicles are en route.

For this family of a Year 9 pupil, Queenswood transport has had a hugely positive effect. ‘We have had three years of superb service. The drivers have been great, always punctual, polite and friendly and our daughter loves the chats the girls have on the way to and from school.

The school app means we can keep track of where they are on the route which helps a busy family in the mornings. We receive notifications when they arrive to and from school which is so helpful and reassuring. It means that mornings and evenings run very smoothly in our household.’

Metallics are having a make-up moment, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

I

f you’re not afraid to shine bright, the glitter make-up trend is for you.

A little sparkle goes a long way – and it’s an easy way to elevate your look for daytime, as well as after dark.

“As we head into the summer season, metallics and glitters are going to be at the forefront,” says Charlotte Knight, founder and CEO of Ciate London, Lottie London and Skin Proud.

It was a big trend on the spring/summer catwalks, “With Acne Studios, Etro and Tom Ford all showcasing stunning metallic or glitter looks across eyes, lips and body”, adds Knight.

“These big statements, and what we’ve seen gracing our screens on the likes of Euphoria this year, will see us all trying to recreate the looks at home.”

Melanie Barrese, head make-up artist for Illamasqua, says sparkle is a great way to add some texture to your beauty look.

If you’re not sure where to start, she says: “I love to add some glitter to the centre of the eye [near the tear duct], in a similar colour to the rest of the eye make-up. So even if the rest of the make-up is matte, the eyes get a beautiful sparkle and added dimension.”

Barrese says applying a light colour to your cheekbones is another soft way of adding some glitter. “Choosing a shade similar to highlighter,

Having fun with glitter “For something more playful, you can also place glitter in more non-conventional areas around the eye, such as above the crease of the eye, on the outer corner, and along the lower lash line,” Barrese says. “Pair it with a natural, glowy skin to achieve a youthful, modern and fun look.”

Knight says: “Another really easy wearable look is by adding a touch of metallic to your natural freckles – to enhance your natural beauty, and give all those catwalk and Y2K vibes.”

Chapins’ edit of the top trends is a show and tell of the materials, colours, shapes and functions that will come to define the modern home over the next year.

ORGANIC OBJECTS After taking solitude in nature for so long, we continue to seek to recreate it in our homes via organic shapes, the imperfect and hints at natural intervention. Nature and the implication of time are quietly introduced, pieces created to look like manufacture never happened – did they grow out in the wilderness? Shapes have an accidental feel like they have slowly evolved and perfection is something left behind long ago.

To learn more about Cults Big Summer Sale, we sat down with Becka, our Creative photography & Styling Manager, to discuss further...

Talk us through the initial concept and story behind the Summer Sale campaign?

Instead of the usual graphic sale campaigns we see everywhere, we wanted to push new boundaries for Cult with our “Fashion + Floral” inspired Summer Sale campaign. We chose to shoot this in an artistic setting with a model to breathe some fun energy into the campaign and to connect with customers.

As the leading Creative Photography & Styling Manager, tell us what makes this one different from the rest?

Aside from shooting with a model for the first time (which was incredibly fun!) we produced our first social media campaign video, which allowed

the high energy on set to be conveyed to our social audience.

Where did you source/ gain inspiration for the styling, theme & photoshoot?

When you think of Spring / Summer what comes to mind? Flowers, meadows, even freshly cut grass is up there! Our marketing team briefed in ‘red’ to convey the feeling of a sale, so it stemmed from there (mind the pun).

In terms of inspiration the likes of Pinterest, Instagram, various interior and fashion magazines were all very instrumental in building the art direction and final look.

Lastly, tell us your highlights from the days you spent shooting and working to bring everything together?

The shoot itself was really high energy with such a positive feeling. The real highlights were watching the silliness of our lovely model Terri forward rolling over sofas and singing into floor lamps turned into a strong campaign - we even had a furry visitor sneak into the studio to come and say hello. cultfurniture.com
