UK’s Oldest Family Jewellers takes home 2 awards at Family Business of the Year Awards Evening

O

n 6th June, Gatwards of Hitchin was announced the winner of Retail Family Business of the Year and Chairman, Anna Gatward, was also awarded a Lifetime Achievement award for her 60 years of running the jewellers. When James Gatward first opened his doors for business in Hitchin in 1760 as a watch and clockmaker King George II was still on the throne. Over its long and colourful history, Gatwards has seen many changes. With 258 years in business, Gatwards is now the oldest family jewellers in the United Kingdom. The Family Business of the Year Awards, organised by Family Business United, celebrate the vital contribution that family businesses of all sizes play in the UK economy. Innovation, investment, passion and pride are evident in family businesses across the UK confirming that the family business has much to celebrate. With around 5 million family firms in the UK providing around 12 million jobs and generating a significant contribution to GDP, these national awards certainly help to put the family business sector on the map and give them the recognition they deserve. Paul Andrews, Founder and Managing Director of Family Business United explained: “Since joining the family business out of need at the age of 16 following the death of her father, Anna has devoted her life to the family firm. Sixty years on and she is still active in the business, overseeing buying and guiding the next generation, a transition that will see her hand over the role of custodian of the family firm to her niece, Charlotte.” Anna is delighted, but at the same time shocked at winning the award adding, “I am delighted to

have won the lifetime achievement award and for Gatwards to have won the Retail award. We have a wonderful team and we could not have achieved this without them. I joined the business at 16 as the 7th generation to ensure our heritage kept going and I am thrilled that the 8th generation is now taking the business forward.” The 8th generation of the Gatward family, Charlotte, has been involved in running the business for the past year. She is the daughter of Lisa Gatward (Anna’s sister) who also worked in the business for over 40 years. Charlotte added: “We are all over the moon to have won these awards and believe they are a recognition of our commitment to delivering an outstanding customer experience and selling high quality products. In challenging times for retail, we feel we have stood the test of time because we endeavour to give all of our customers an experience when they come into our shop. Our aim is to “Put the Sparkle into buying jewellery” and we intend to continue that into the 9th generation and beyond. www.gatwardsofhitchin.co.uk

SOTHEBY’S CELEBRATES 275 YEARS Made in Britain on 11 March 1744. The History of Sotheby’s Exhibition. Open until September 2019

The War, The Women and The Big Move In 1915, when all able-bodied men were off fighting in the trenches, women were recruited for the first time to work at Sotheby’s. A re-discovered memoir written by one of those pioneering women, records the unspoken sparks that flew as a result of these changes. In 1917, Sotheby’s made the bold move to fashionable New Bond Street, taking Sotheby’s from the heart of the book world to the hub of the art world.

Second World War

O

n 11th March 1744, after a good decade of selling books from his corner table at the Angel and Crown pub in Covent Garden, Samuel Baker, a ‘joyous fellow’ with a love of books and an entrepreneurial spirit did something different: he brought down the hammer on the first auction held in his own salerooms. That first sale of some ‘several hundred scarce and valuable books’ totalled the sum of £826. It marked the beginning of Sotheby’s and of a history punctuated with unexpected turns, colourful characters, nimble adaptation in the face of change and adversity, and much more besides.

The Exhibition: The 275th anniversary of Baker’s first auction has prompted Sotheby’s to hold an exhibition taking a look back at its history. A fascinating cache of littleknown memoirs and long-forgotten stories, along with rarely seen photographs, manuscripts and catalogues - together tell the story of Sotheby’s Much of the fruits of that research, are on display in a lively exhibition in Sotheby’s Café on Conduit Street in London, free and open to the public until September 2019. 4 0 J U LY 2 0 1 9

One of the most memorable pre-WWII sales happened in April 1937 in the ballroom at 148 Piccadilly. The same year as the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, London was full of distinguished visitors from all over the world, many of whom flocked to the sale. The auction became a national event - one of the first of this kind to be broadcast by the BBC. The glittering contents made the then staggering sum of £125,000. During WWII sales continued regardless. Sotheby’s New Bond Street picture basement was deployed as public air raid shelter, its doorman acting as a spotter during sales to warn those in the auction room of any immediate danger. It seems, though, that no one ever left the saleroom during an air raid - apparently the fear of missing the next bid was greater than the fear of bombs.

And beyond… Over the ensuing years, Baker’s flourishing company was entrusted with legendary sales such as that of the original autograph manuscript of Lewis

Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures Under Ground (1928) consigned by the story’s namesake, Alice Liddell. Since then, the gavel of Baker’s successors has fallen on the unpublished papers of Sir Isaac Newton (1936), the collection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (2006), the Magna Carta (2007), the Declaration of Independence (2000), the autograph manuscript for Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (2003), to name but a few. Architectural challenges, posed by Sotheby’s building (an amalgam of 17 Georgian townhouses knocked together), anticipated the reinforcement of the gallery floors at New Bond Street required, decades later, in preparation for the arrival of huge numbers of formaldehyde tanks consigned by Damien Hirst in the groundbreaking 2008 sale of works directly from his studio (and sold for some £111 million on the day Lehman Brothers crashed). Along the way, some of the world’s most precious objects and collections have passed through Sotheby’s: Napoleon’s Library (1823), the original manuscript for Alice’s Adventures Under Ground, presented by Lewis Carroll to the original Alice,

Sotheby’s has 80 offices in 40 countries and is the oldest company traded on the New York Stock Exchange - almost 50 years older than the Exchange itself. Sotheby’s was the first auction house to set sail across the Atlantic and open offices in America (1955) and the first to hold auctions in Asia (1973).

Alice Liddell (1928), the 68-carat diamond bought by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor (1969), Einstein’s Theory of Relativity (1987), The Andy Warhol Collection (1988), The Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1996), Sue the T Rex, now the star of the Field Museum in Chicago (1997), the collection of the Duke & Duchess of Windsor (1998), The Forbes Collection of Fabergé, including nine Fabergé Imperial Easter Eggs (2004) and Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’ (2012), These are just some of the people, moments and stories that feature in Sotheby’s 275 exhibition, bringing to life both the most celebrated and the long-forgotten aspects of Sotheby’s history.

“Sotheby’s has thrived for 275 years precisely because it has dared to reinvent itself again and again, and in so doing has continually redefined the business of trading art on a global basis,” said Tad Smith, Sotheby’s CEO. “The company’s history is marked by a series of innovations that have not just continually changed Sotheby’s, but transformed the wider industry along with it. We are thrilled to share this important milestone with our clients, colleagues and shareholders around the world.” Today, Sotheby’s remains synonymous with innovation. Online bidding has become the preferred method of engagement in their salesrooms, and Sotheby’s has recently rolled out a new online auction engine with mobile bidding and other features to make it easy and fun. Sotheby’s also provides the opportunity to browse sale catalogues, view original content, stream live auctions and more at sothebys. com and through Sotheby’s apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Apple TV and Amazon Fire. For BEYOND THE ROAD, Nightingale and Dobbie seek to reinvent how people experience and interact with music, so it becomes an environment which visitors are free to explore. eatherstone London is a company passionate about preserving bespoke Tailoring standards, established by Master Tailor Craig Featherstone. Craig has over 26 years experience and has dressed clients at the highest level, including presidents, making him one of the UK’s most sought after and exclusive Tailors. Featherstone London are an ethical company, conscious about planet pollution, fast fashion supply chains and having zero wastage in their workshop. Having just launched their new personal design service they combine the skills of Savile Row with professional tailoring and style advice to help you create your very own capsule wardrobe. Although Craig makes for some of the most affluent people in the world, he believes if you choose the right items and take your time to build up your bespoke collection it can still be affordable. “Men are definitely becoming much more image conscious.” says Craig. “We all want to look good, but not everyone understands styling or how to enhance your wardrobe using just a few key items. Whilst there will always be a place for 2 or 3 piece suits for more formal occasions and important business meetings, separates are becoming increasingly more popular and are very versatile for creating different looks daily. If paired correctly separates can look just as smart as suits. I have some clients who only order jackets from me which they wear with off the peg items to give the illusion that their whole outfit is bespoke. My advice, if you are new to bespoke would be to start with a structured sports jacket. Once you know a bit about bespoke its very obvious to spot the detailing on a decent handmade one. The shape, quality and fit that can be achieved from a bespoke item is very hard to replicate in an off the peg one, plus it feels special as its a one-off.” “Let us help you understand the benefits of good tailoring and work together to build your collection. We will explain what works for different events and plan your year ahead, this is where our service is very unique. We visit you at home and go through your whole wardrobe. We suggest key pieces to add to your basics which will enable you to have

the right outfit for every event. We advise you on what to pair together and by adding some bespoke items, shirts, trousers or sports jackets to your already existing wardrobe we can create your capsule collection. We understand not everyone has a large budget, but most people could afford a few bespoke items even on relatively small salaries. It’s all about buying quality items and making savvy fabric choices, keep it classic and they will last. People think bespoke is a huge expense, but in reality for as little as £300 you can have a bespoke shirt which fits you properly, is individual and to your own exact specifications. You would probably pay more for a mass produced designer branded one!” “We take pride in knowing every end of our supply chain, all our items are 100% hand crafted by us in the UK. Bespoke items can last decades if you look after them. As a society we spend a lot seasonally on ‘disposable’ items that don’t really get much more than a few years wear. We’d like to see a mindful shift from being “fashion conscious’, an outdated concept to being more ‘style conscious’ instead. When you know what suits your body shape and invest in some good quality items, then you will always look great.”

Stressbusting Surrey garden collaboration wins coveted silver-gilt medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

C

elebrating success at the UK’s most anticipated horticultural event of the year, the Silent Pool Gin Garden wins a prestigious silver-gilt medal at the Royal Horticultural Society’s world-famous Chelsea Flower Show 2019, where innovative design and horticultural expertise combine to showcase some of the country’s most exciting and inventive gardening feats. Blending the passion and expertise of David Neale of Neale Richards Garden Design and University of Surrey academics Professor Tony Myatt and Professor Richard Murphy, the Silent Pool Gin Garden takes inspiration from plant technologies and the greening of inner city spaces. Born from the vision to create a space that absorbs stress through scent, sound and sight, the garden also invites you to consider the making of gin, the inventive use of recycled materials and the power of plants to create energy. Many of the botanicals used in the making of gin are represented in the planting and symbolised by a single juniper bonsai tree given its own floating shelf on the garden wall, while a striking hanging seat gives a nod to the distillery’s copper stills. A Perspex teal water wall etched with Silent Pool’s signature botanicals forms part of the garden’s feature aqueduct. Director of the Centre for Environment and Sustainability Professor Richard Murphy said: “After

careful planning and exploring of new sustainable technologies, we are very excited to present our united efforts at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this week. “With the help of engineering students from SurreyEARS (the electronics and amateur radio student society), intricately installed sensors orchestrate Tony Myatt’s natural soundscape, triggering sounds of birds and insects in response to environmental changes in humidity, light, temperature and wind. This, coupled with live electricity generation from the plant microbial fuel cells, has been a brilliant way to engage, inform and intrigue visitors, encouraging an appreciation for plants and the significant role they can play in wellbeing and sustainability.” Ian McCulloch, Founder and Director of Silent Pool Distillers said: “By collaborating with NRGD and the University of Surrey, we were able to create a garden that truly engaged, informed and intrigued visitors in appreciating the critical role of plants to their own well-being, as well as the futures of others. This has been a truly exciting project and we are absolutely thrilled with the outcome.” Elements of the garden will now be donated to Silent Pool Distillers’ chosen charity, Cherry Trees, which provides home-from-home respite care for children and young adults with complex disabilities in East Clandon. www.silentpoolgin.com

The inspiration for the garden came after spending time in the Surrey Hills, a place of unrivalled tranquillity. We wanted to find a way of using plants and technology to allow everyone to enjoy that sense of calm, no matter their location.” – David Neale

No Scalpel required! I

t’s time to get you acquainted with Tweakments. Beauty’s most advanced treatments yet, which promise flawless skin without going under the knife

Let’s take a little test, answer the following questions with a yes or no 1 - Is your jaw starting to show the first signs of sagging? 2 - Is volume loss creeping in? 3 - Is your skin starting to lose its spring? 4 - Is your neck looking crepey? 5 - Does your décolletage have those fine lines that won’t go away when you get out of bed in the morning? If you have answered yes to any or to all of these questions, then; Let me introduce you all to Profhilo, which is an injectable treatment delivering unique levels of hyaluronic acid in a way that fillers never could. Sitting somewhere between skin boosters and fillers it offers intense hydration, while triggering collagen and elastin production… It has a hyaluronic acid based, gel like formula that attracts water to the skins surface, but, rather

than sticking to where it’s been injected it spreads beneath the skin like honey - so it works throughout the tissue to lift, hydrate and re-contour. It doesn’t add volume (unlike conventional filler), but it does remodel the skin “propping it up and giving it a youthful glow” Five points on each side of the face prescribed by Doctors to lend structural support to the facial features (for example; the highest point of the cheekbone, the angle of the jaw and just in front of the ear), are measured and marked and a small syringe is used to inject the solution, beneath the skins surface (takes around 10 seconds each point) And then you are good to go. Pain Factor -it feels a little stingy for a couple seconds Downtime – You may walk out with a slight swelling at the injection points, but a day later that will have disappeared, no exercise for the first 24hours (incase of bruising) and just avoid facials or facial massages for about 2 weeks Results – skin looks instantly tighter; a month later, following a second treatment new collagen and elastin start to become apparent for a more smooth and youthful tighter skin.

In Pursuit of Happiness A

ccording to the Office for National Statistics, earning less than £20,000 per annum is likely to place you in the unhappiest category of UK citizens. So, the following statement from the same organisation is somewhat perplexing: ‘Who is happiest in their work? 87% of florists and 64% of lawyers said they were happy in their work’. That made me think. Many of us might recognise there are facets of being a florist which might engender happiness. Florists are generally mixing with friendly people and creating something with a natural product. The average income being £15k to £20K. A lawyer is frequently in an extremely competitive environment, often mixing with unfriendly people and doing things in a non-abstract way by literally following rules. The average income being £75k to £175K. So, it’s not just about money, but how many of us are brave enough to realise this? Anyway, if your sole purpose or raison d’etre is to make lots of money, then being a florist will probably be a drag. Steve Taylor, a lecturer at Leeds Beckett University, says: “I think ultimately it’s a crisis of meaning… you may become a successful person, you may be financially settled. But you reach the age of 40 or 50 and think: what is the point of all this? You haven’t actually begun to live authentically.” Steve added, “I did some research on people who had recovered from cancer. I asked: how did they live differently in the light of it? One woman decided to live for herself. She went paragliding, she went travelling on her own. The people in her life thought she had gone crazy.” The truth is that happiness is subjective. Two people can listen to the same joke and one will laugh and the other might not find it funny at all. Happiness is also transitory. The person who laughed at the joke will not laugh forever. Eventually, however funny the joke was on telling, it will lose its energy. So, is the happiness concept a false dream? Well probably yes, but regularly being in a state of overall contentedness where all the sensations including sad and happy can be recognised at different times is also probable. The big awareness is that a balanced contentedness, living in juxtaposition with the 6 8 J U LY 2 0 1 9

highs and lows and a good sprinkling of indifferent moods, is as good as it gets. If a person moves away their distortions and recognises what is authentically important in their life and if they stop denying idiosyncratically crucial positive elements they will move closer to being content. They will nurture a better chance of being happy with a reduction in stress, low mood, anxiety or frustration. As the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe once said, “Less is more.” I would add, it’s the filtering out of the restrictive artificial attitudes and viewpoints and finding the truly important aspects of your life that is essential. Transparency via self-exploration can lead to autonomy, satisfaction, self-worth and calmness and dare I say it… happiness.

Is Mental Health a genuine issue? M

aintaining a healthy lifestyle evolves around our daily life routines and choices. With technology at our fingertips, we are inundated with information on the latest health trends, super foods, and exercise regimes. Our daily existence is becoming a frontline where we find ourselves crashing down with a seasonal cold or flu and so our first port of call is our GP. We consciously make an effort to heal by taking medication, plenty of rest and fluids. Hence a point for reflection: Do you recall a moment when a family member, friend or colleague has experienced a mental health illness or episode? Were you sympathetic or empathetic, or neither of both? Do you feel that talking about mental health remains a taboo and a stigma which begs the question, “is mental health a genuine issue”?

Workplace and Mental Health According to Mental Health England, 1 in 4 adults will experience a mental health illness or episode in a lifetime. Depression and Anxiety affects us the most impacting our relationships with our loved ones, our role in society and fundamentally how we perceive our self-worth. Hence our workplace plays a crucial role in supporting Mental Health because: 71% of employees still consider mental health as a taboo subject in the workplace 45% of people will make excuses for absence rather than report a mental health issue 91% of people have said that they have 7 0 J U LY 2 0 1 9

experienced workplace stress. These statistics suggest mental health in the workplace is still in the dark ages! Adapting a collaborative approach and opening lanes of communication will bring increased productivity, a healthier workforce and a recovery of £21.2bn in lost revenue impacted by mental health illnesses! WHY BUY WHEN YOU CAN BORROW? Love it Loan it (LILI) is a Hertfordshire based initiative, reducing textile waste by borrowing beautiful rarely worn Occasion wear

O

ur ethos is to reduce fashion industry waste by encouraging consumers to loan beautiful evening wear that is rarely worn for special occasions, rather than buying new for each event. Together we can change attitudes to fast fashion culture and help save the planet. The fast fashion industry is producing so much waste. Its impact is second only to oil as the world’s largest polluter.1.2 billion tonnes of CO2 go into the air from garment production which makes up 5% of global emissions. We are actively participating in Slow Fashion Season, a worldwide movement (21 June - 21 Sept). We would like to get as many Hertfordshire ladies as possible to join in by not buying new but borrowing, sharing and upcycling their wardrobe for 3 months. In just 90 days we can globally save 360 million litres of water and stop 1.4 million kg of carbon emissions entering the atmosphere.

ABOUT US Our company was set up by two eco warriors from St Albans, Julie and Domenica. We regularly look at the beautiful evening dresses we own but can’t bear to throw away after just one wear and wondered, what can we do to reduce our waste, get out of this fast fashion cycle and clear some space too in our wardrobe? Thus Love it Loan it was born. We have a wide variety of beautiful evening dresses, bags and accessories for every occasion already ourselves and we figured there are many ladies in the same position with garments only worn once, so we opened up 7 2 J U LY 2 0 1 9

our platform to the whole of Hertfordshire! We offer free delivery (St Albans/Harpenden) and in keeping our service local, we are reducing our carbon footprint and doing our bit for the planet. Alas there is a much wider, more serious reason for us to exist. The reality is that countless fast fashion retailers take advantage of cheap labour overseas, manufacturing garments with little to no regard for their workers conditions or the negative impact that chemicals and other elements have on them and the environment. To combat this and show our commitment to change we support a number of charities that help minimise the problem of trafficking in supply chains and push for better living standards for factory and garment workers. Join Lili today! Let’s make money together, raise money together and as a society, together we can make our mark. We can’t change who actually made your clothes or how, but we can do our bit to reduce waste, support fair standards and help quit this crazy cycle of consumerism! www.liliuk.com

with Mr Ahid Abood, Consultant Plastic Surgeon

“There are so many things I enjoy about my job!

What made you want to be a plastic surgeon? I was fascinated with the broad range of techniques used by plastic surgeons and the ability to operate all over the body and treat a variety of conditions. Being able to carry out a complex reconstructive procedure and to make it look aesthetically pleasing is extremely satisfying. What do you enjoy most about your job? There are so many things! I find it incredibly rewarding making a positive change to people’s lives and I enjoy the technical challenges of surgery. I’m fortunate enough to be able to work both in the NHS and also to have my own private clinic. Each setting enables me to meet a wide range of people with very different issues. What are the most common cosmetic procedures? The most common procedures I carry out are breast enlargement, breast reduction and tummytuck surgery. This is probably a reflection of the most popular procedures in the UK in general. How should patients research their plastic surgeon? 7 4 J U LY 2 0 1 9

I’m frequently surprised by how little people have researched me before their initial consultation. If someone is considering cosmetic surgery then at the very least they should make sure that their surgeon is on the specialist register for plastic surgery which is held by the General Medical Council (GMC). In the UK, full members of BAPRAS have all had full specialist training (British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery). What do you think about the idea of going overseas for cosmetic surgery? Generally speaking, it’s a bad idea. There are some very well-trained plastic surgeons outside the UK but it can difficult to check. Other countries have different standards and systems which makes it difficult to find out if a surgeon overseas is fully trained. No procedure is free from risk and complications can occur whether your surgery is carried out in the UK or abroad. However, if you choose to have your surgery in the UK , the consultant plastic surgeon who undertook the surgery will provide you with any necessary aftercare. This kind of reassurance cannot easily be provided when travelling overseas. 0800 233 5088. referral@skinscarclinic.co.uk www.skinscarclinic.co.uk

My love for the jumpsuit

I

had sort of assumed that everyone loves jumpsuits as much as I do. Practical, easy and often chicer than some of their dress/trouser counterparts, an all-in-one has long been the thing I rely on for those moments when you need to look more dressed up than usual, but have absolutely no idea what to wear. But during many client consultations I am amazed at how women don’t think about jumpsuits as their go-to outfit for an evening out, a wedding, an alternative to office wear or a summer garden party. They are so versatile and flattering, it works like a dress but removes all the worry about what goes with what. I now feel it is my job on this earth to persuade any remaining resisters as to the power of the jumpsuit. I have clients in their thirties ranging to clients in their sixties who are addicted to the power of the jumpsuit. Why? Because it is the most youth-endowing item of clothing you can wear as you get older. The jumpsuit is a true wardrobe saviour, when wearing one you’ll fit into any sort of situation and/or dress code. Casual yet sophisticated it can be effortlessly dressed up for weddings and last minute parties or thrown on with trainers and a denim jacket for a chic, nonchalant look. During winter, layers are the way to justify braving an all-inone, whether it be with an oversized jacket or fitted polo neck to add edge (and warmth!). The trick is to keep styling simple and let the jumpsuit itself make the statement. Most clients, after seeing that jumpsuits are not, in fact, the work of the devil but a cool, very flattering alternative to dresses and separates, concede that I am right. I’m not smug at all; in fact, I’m just so happy that another person has

8 0 J U LY 2 0 1 9

joined my jumpsuit fan club. So if you want to look both stylish and cool, be it for day or night, I hereby pledge that a jumpsuit will deliver! Nina Whitehead, Personal Stylist, www.edits-styling.com

t Poggenpohl, no two kitchens are ever the same. All ranges are made to measure and everything from worktops to handles, cabinet finishes to interior fixings can be personally selected to perfectly complement the architecture of the owner’s home. The company’s legendary kitchens combine the Modernist principles derived from its origins in the Bauhaus movement and the Ulm School of Design with a generosity of texture, colour and proportion. Recent Poggenpohl ranges include the unstructured +Modo which features glass fronted drawers and open shelves that can be used to showcase china, glassware and saucepans; the minimalist +Segmento with handle-less cupboards and worktops so thin that they appear to float above the units beneath (they can still hold the heaviest pots and pans and stand up to a lifetime of use); and flexible +Venovo which is ideal for open-plan living with its combination of wood, ceramic and metal materials. stablished in 1990 by Peter Bowles, Original BTC began life as an Oxford based home lighting brand and has secured two further lighting brands; heritage marine lighting manufacturer Davey Lighting and LED lighting manufacturer Beadlight, under its umbrella. Exports account for 50% of the production, supplying both the retail and contract markets around the world with an emphasis on the hotel, restaurant and aeronautical industries. With a family history steeped in retail, manufacturing and design, Peter designs the company’s products in conjunction with his son Charlie who became Director in 2012. Original BTC, Davey Lighting & Beadlight each offer a diverse and unique range of lighting designs. All brands draw inspiration from Britain’s rich post industrialisation history as well as incorporating modern tastes and trends. Simple yet effective, the dome-shaped Hector was Original BTC’s first light produced in bone china and remains one of the brand’s best-loved designs. Today, founder Peter Bowles and Director Charlie Bowles use highly skilled, labour-intensive processes to create multi-faceted forms which explore, maximise and celebrate the material’s translucency, luminosity and versatility. Hand slip-cast at Original BTC’s Stoke-on-Trent bone china factory, the father and son duo’s innovative production techniques and commitment to local manufacturing have resulted in an ever-growing collection of British design classics. “From the designing and making of the mould to the complicated production process of the shades themselves, we’ve taken bone china to it’s absolute limits in size and form. The Christie, Hatton and Fin collections are tremendous accomplishments for all involved and we’re proud to show how technically brilliant British manufacturing can be,” explains Peter. www.originalbtc.com

Tile with style

C

hoosing the right tiles for your bathroom needs some careful consideration. With so many varieties on the market, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Choose from ceramic, slate, glass and metal tiles, plain or patterned, large and small, smooth or textured. The options are seemingly endless. So, to help you through the decision process, we’ve put together some practical tips, making finding the perfect tiles for you bathroom, a breeze

CERAMIC OR NATURAL STONE TILES? Ceramic tiles are the most popular by a long way. They’re durable, their glazed surface makes them highly resistant to harbouring germs, they’re usually very easy to keep clean, and come in styles to suit every taste. If you opt for ceramics, the most important thing to be aware of is that they do tend to vary from lot to lot, so make sure all the boxes you buy are stamped with the same lot number. But if you’d rather try something different... Glazed terracotta tiles are hugely popular right now with the trend for Mediterranean style bathrooms. Good quality terracotta is not only gorgeously rustic, it’ll last virtually forever, but can be hard to find. So the cheapest option might not be the best. Natural stone tiles like granite, slate, marble and even terrazzo (composed of marble chips imbedded in concrete and polished smooth) are beautiful, distinctive, and luxurious. They’ll cost you though. And these materials tend to be porous, so you may need to apply a seal to stop the tiles absorbing water. Make sure you discuss this with the supplier before you buy. Glass, metal, and porcelain tiles look brilliant if installed properly – but that’s easier said than done. Unless you’re really a dab hand at DIY you might want to leave the fitting of these to the experts.

ADD TEXTURE AND INTEREST WITH BATHROOM TILES With the majority of bathroom suites being sleek and white, tiles are a great way to add texture and

interest into a room that can otherwise, look fairly clinical. If you’re talking floor tiles, texture is a must. It sounds like common sense, but many buyers are still seduced by lovely shiny tiles and then end up skidding all over the place every time the floor’s wet. Generally, the rougher the texture, the less slippery the tile when wet. When it comes to wall tiles, shiny tiles look chic and sleek and reflect light, making them a good option when in small or dark spaces. On the other hand, embossed tiles can be a smart way of adding interest to your walls and reducing starkness, especially if your tiles are in only one or two colours.

CONSIDER COLOURFUL OR PATTERNED BATHROOM TILES It goes without saying that white is by far the most popular colour choice for bathroom tiles. White tiles are fresh-looking, classic, and reflect light to give the illusion of a more spacious, lighter room. If you’re worried about the room looking too stark add dark or patterned towels and other accessories to introduce splashes of colour while retaining the clean minimalist look. Colourful or patterned tiles can be used to add detail here and there, or make a bold statement when used to cover the entire wall. They tend to look best contrasted with simpler bathroom fixtures.

SMALLER BATHROOMS LOOK BETTER WITH SMALLER TILES Generally, the more compact the bathroom the smaller the tiles should be, especially if there’s not much space between your sink, toilet, and tub. Smaller tiles will also require less cutting to fit around objects and make for a more flowing feel. If you’re lucky enough to have a big bathroom, large tiles give a sleek look with less exposed grouting in between. Borders or panels of smaller tiles can look fantastic in complimentary or contrasting colours.

Pretty in Pink

O

nce cast aside as ‘girly’, the colour pink is fast shaping up to be the hottest shade for interiors. Sugary pinks through to snazzy scarlets, pretty peaches and even funky neons are the winning shades on the palette this season. “Don’t make the mistake of thinking that pink is just for girls. Not any more it isn’t,” declares Emily Murray, creator of award-winning blog, The Pink House, which celebrates the colour in all its hues in her own pink decorated home. It’s been such a success since she started it three years ago (she has more than 60,000 followers on Instagram) that her new book, Pink House Living: For People Cheating On Fashion With Furniture, was a natural follow-on. It’s a brilliant guide to seeing the world through ‘rose-tinted’ decor spectacles. Stepping inside her home is proof of pink’s magic - she shows me around rooms which ooze personality, thanks to the magical touches of her “all-time favourite colour”. Pink painted walls, a pink kitchen island, neon pink signs, splashes of pink to highlight period features, as well as an array of punchy pink accessories, are just some of the ways in which the colour has a starring role in her schemes. Yet with her skill and sense of style, she makes it sing - rather than dominate or shock - in her Edwardian semi, and this uber-cool interior leaves you wondering why you’ve never thought of using pink more. The mother-of-two is always hot on the trail of perfect pink homes, and her book features an array of brilliant pink settings from around the world, as well as her own rooms. Even she’s surprised her own pink passion is so widely shared. “I’d underestimated the power of pink. It turns out it’s incredibly popular on every level and in every way. We love pink,” says Murray delightedly. “We love it on front doors, on walls and on rugs. We love it on Instagram, in magazines and in fabric charts. We love it in barely-there blush, fuchsia and neon.”

Gabrielle Fagan catches up with the The Pink House’s Emily Murray, to discover how to harness the prettiest colour of the rainbow

For those fearing a pink overload, she stresses that embracing the shade “doesn’t mean I like all my rooms dressed in floor-to-ceiling fuchsia... Even when I have free rein to decorate exactly as I chose, I exercise pink restraint. “For me, the key to making the most of this joyous colour - for I fully believe that pink has an amazing power to make people happy - is using it in moderation.” In the living room, her dream was fabric walls, saturated colours, pattern clashes, loads of luxe and plenty of pink. “My aim was to turn a north-facing space into a cosy place for cuddling up in the evenings, but with a rock and roll twist.” She’s achieved it with a “pink ‘play’ neon sign - a copy of my own handwriting - made to order”, as well as a cocktail bar created from a corner cabinet upcycled in green and gold leaf. Hidden LED light strips give it the impression of glowing from within. For those who fancy taking the plunge, she advises: “If you want more colour at home (it doesn’t have to be pink) simply choose your favourite shade and go for it. “Make a scrapbook or Pinterest board of settings with colourful decor which naturally attracts you. You don’t need to design the whole room at once - start with a piece of art or wallpaper and then slowly add further changes, so a room develops.” “There are so many ways to use pink,” adds Murray. “You can accentuate a particular architectural feature, piece of furniture or art work, and sometimes simply use it to allow another gorgeous colour to shine.”

How to choose the ideal table for a small dining space kept to their original, compact shape for everyday use.. There’s a variety of extending styles to choose from, but it’s important to invest in one that works best in tight spaces. Butterfly leaf tables extend quickly and efficiently, and folds neatly under the table when not in use. Depending on budget and room size, there’s a table for every room – think classic, rectangular tables to practical round centrepieces that lengthens out for dinner parties.”

Choose a table that can multitask

F

or homes without a dedicated dining area, working around a tight space for daily meals and entertaining can be a challenge. However, making smart furniture choices can easily turn a small dining space into a chic, comfortable focal point in the home. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice, shares 3 helpful tips on choosing a table that works well in small dining spaces.

Pick the right table shape and style The heart of the home is where people come together for meals and conversations, so choosing a suitable dining table is vital, especially when space is at a premium. “Consider the room layout and obstacles before making a new purchase,” Rebecca advises. “The shape and design of a table might affect how it fits around the room, along with the number of chairs it can accommodate. Round tables are great for tight spaces, and their rounded edges reduce the risk of accidents for a more family-friendly home. Pedestal tables are also excellent space-savers; the central base frees up more legroom while also maximising floor space. When it comes to style, the possibilities are truly endless. A rustic table in walnut or grey wood lends a comforting presence and can be paired with practical wooden chairs, or styled along a chic, bistro-feel with comfy fabric seats. Or, for a modern take – glass tables are perfect for that extra oomph. These tables score big on style with different silhouettes and materials, from polished steel legs to statement wooden pedestals.”

Opt for an extending table

Small dining spaces will benefit from an extending table – the winning formula is its ability to lengthen and transform a space for parties and gatherings. “Extending tables are popular picks for most homes, but they’re extremely crucial in smaller homes and apartments,” Rebecca says. “These centrepieces are ideal for big gatherings, and can be 1 0 0 J U LY 2 0 1 9

Styling around a compact dining space also means investing in furniture that pulls double duty. “It all comes down to strategic planning and shopping smart,” Rebecca says. “Think about how the table will be used at home and where it’ll be placed, without throwing the rest of the space off-balance. Look for a sturdy centrepiece that multitasks as a handy kitchen counter, dining area or comfortable workspace. If smaller tables are the go-to here, opt for lighter builds that can be moved against a wall when not in use, freeing up valuable floor space.” www.furniturechoice.co.uk

PELARGONIUM POWER

Garden designer Claudia de Yong offers tips on how to make a statement with this colourful stalwart summer plant Award-winning garden designer Claudia de Yong says: “To create a low maintenance garden without compromising on colour and visual interest, look for plants like pelargoniums that can be grown with minimal aftercare, and still remain healthy and happy throughout the summer.”

She offers the following tips... Combine varieties: There are more than 500 varieties, from scented-leaf to trailing ivy specimens along with upright bushy regals. Combining different varieties together creates a beautiful, eyecatching range of colours and growth habits - even the foliage variations can be stunning. Use block colour: Choose a single colour theme and colour-block your pelargoniums to create a strong statement. Include them in borders: Pelargoniums aren’t just for pots and planters, they also grow beautifully in herbacious borders - combine with Nepeta (Catmint), Erigeron (Mexican fleabane), Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ (Wallflower) or Salvia Caradonna (Balkan Clary) for bee-loving visual interest. Go vertical: Create a vertical ‘garden’ of pelargoniums by affixing pots to walls, fences or balconies - an effective way to create privacy. Take them indoors: Pelargoniums love being in a sunny spot indoors too - planting single varieties in simple terracotta pots for the kitchen table or work surface brings summer inside. Alternatively, use them as cut flowers - pelargoniums will last for up to three weeks in a vase.

A

re you looking for low-maintenance, high impact colour this summer with patio pots, beds and borders? For quick-fix glorious garden style, look no further than the pelargonium, which needs so little watering and should thrive in a sunny spot through summer and into autumn. A staggering 40 million are planted in UK gardens each year. Pelargoniums are commonly known as geraniums, but this is wrong as true geraniums are hardy, herbaceous plants which are often used as fillers in borders come June, when the perennial cranesbill geraniums act as terrific ground cover and provide great colour too. The naming problem occurred in the 17th century when the first pelargoniums were brought to Europe and were called geraniums, due to their similarity to the perennial plant, and so the name geranium stuck. Pelargoniums store water in their stems, which makes them highly versatile when it comes to planting, so be creative - disused drain pipes, chimney pots, even a wellington boot or two - these garden troopers will thrive. Planting pelargoniums into containers is among the quickest and most rewarding ways to fill a terrace, balcony or garden with vibrant colour, transforming even the plainest outside space into a feelgood oasis with a Mediterranean vibe. 1 0 2 J U LY 2 0 1 9
