The Mill Hill Peter Collinson Heritage Garden

T

his garden was inaugurated on the 250th anniversary of the death of the plant collector & botanist, Peter Collinson F.R.S., 1694-1768, who lived here in the original ‘Ridge Way House’. Mill Hill school’s top terrace, with its ancient trees, owes its origins to the life-long work of Peter Collinson, a foremost member of the 18th -century ‘transatlantic natural history exchange’. Now recognised as one of the formative influences on Britain’s landscape. A representative selection of the plants and flowers which he introduced to English gardening from across the world is now planted here, alongside his many trees. The objective of the garden is to enhance the enjoyment of visitors, pupils, parents, Old Millhillians, and the growing fraternity of garden enthusiasts, as well as to benefit the education of all schools within the Mill Hill School Foundation. The project has been supported by the Foundation’s Head, Mrs Frances King & the Court of Governors, as well as by the Old Millhillians Club, and the Linnean Society, and in association with the Mill Hill Preservation Society. The project team comprises Dr Russell Cowan (OM 1958-63); Trevor Chilton (former Head of Biology and Housemaster, Collinson House (1978-2009); Roderick Braithwaite (OM 1945-1950); & Sam Baldock (Assistant Head, Academic), Mill Hill School). “The Heritage Garden is a thrilling culmination of a 40-year personal interest in the life and work

1 8 J U LY 2 0 1 8

of Peter Collinson, which was stimulated by seeing a cedar tree, allegedly planted by his friend Carl Linnaeus, in the grounds of Mill Hill School when I arrived in 1978 as a young Biology teacher. As I learned of his wide network of “brothers of the spade”, notably in North America, I determined to plant trees in the grounds which had been originally introduced through these connections and was proud to be appointed as House Master to the boarding house which bears Collinson’s name. It has given me great pleasure to work with friends and colleagues, notably, Roddy Braithwaite and Russell Cowan (Old Millhillians) and John Living, president of the Mill Hill Preservation Society towards giving Peter Collinson the local recognition he so thoroughly deserves.” – Trevor Chilton, Teacher at Mill Hill School 1978-2009 “We are delighted to be celebrating the life of Peter Collinson, a very special local resident from the 18th century. We are pleased through the opening of the Collinson Garden to recognise his contribution to botany. Through celebrating this anniversary we have the opportunity to revive an interest within the Foundation in both the beautiful environment we are able to enjoy and in developing links beyond Mill Hill.” – Frances King, Head The Mill Hill School Foundation is an independent school, educating boys and girls aged 3 to 18 years. Situated in North West London and set in over 150 acres of beautiful school grounds. www.millhill.org.uk

Classic Ibiza with Ministry of sound AT HATFIELD HOUSE SET TO SELL-out

on’t miss this family friendly party at Hatfield House on Saturday 1st September. Following the resounding success of Classic Ibiza with Ministry of Sound in 2017, the high demand for tickets at this year’s concert at Hatfield House indicate that it will sell-out ahead of schedule. So, sign up now if you don’t want to miss The Urban Soul Orchestra, DJ Goldierocks and a host of live vocalists performing some of the biggest dance tracks from the last 20 years. The evening starts with a chill-out set where people can enjoy their picnics and a drink, or dance along as the sun fades. Then DJ Goldierocks will turn things up in the interval, getting the crowd into the mood before the USO and vocalists return to the stage to ramp things up into full, party mode. The second set last year started with Fat Boy Slim’s “Right Here Right Now” and Insomnia’s “Faithless”. The euphoric crowd responded by getting on their feet and dancing, while the accompanying lasers turned the setting into a magical, alfresco nightclub. One classic dance track followed another and the atmosphere was electric. This year’s set list will include a number of new tracks that are sure to thrill the crowd. To add to the excitement, at Easter concertgoers will be able to suggest their favourite dance anthems to be included in the programme on social media. More details of this will follow. Because of the increased capacity at this year’s concert, giant screens will be positioned around the stage to ensure that everyone can soak in

the atmosphere. In addition to the amazing artists, what really sets Classic Ibiza apart is that it is a concert for all the family. Set in the delightful outdoor setting of Hatfield House, with easy access to transport links, concert goers can bring their own food and drink, or take advantage of numerous stalls selling high-quality street-food and refreshments. Car-parking is free (both for coaches and cars), so whether you are six or 60 you are assured of having a fantastic evening in a safe and family-friendly environment. Lisa Ward of Revival Productions commented: “We carefully plan every aspect of Classic Ibiza to ensure that everyone that attends the concert is assured of having a truly unforgettable evening. We’ve worked with the fantastic Urban Soul Orchestra for a number of years and can guarantee that they will put on an amazing show. My team’s job is to enhance people’s experience so that they want to come back for more. Hatfield has been selected this year because of its easy access to transport links, with Hatfield station being located opposite the pedestrian entrance to the grounds. In addition, we ensure that people can get on and off the site easily, can enjoy themselves in a safe environment and don’t have to queue for ages to use the toilet! Considering the amount of repeat bookings that we have received, our approach appears to be working. So, if you are coming and want to bring your family and friends along too, it’s advisable to book your tickets now.”

F

ollowing a successful run in Paris, 2018 sees the London premiere of ‘DC Exhibition: Dawn of Super Heroes’, a unique exhibition presented by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Consumer Products in collaboration with Art Ludique-Le Musée. Opened on 23 February at The O2, this one-of-a-kind exhibition celebrates DC’s rich history, unique mythology and iconic Super Heroes and Super Villains such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Joker, The Penguin and Mr. Freeze. The Exhibition brings fans closer to the world’s most iconic characters and features more than 200 original comic pages, around 300 preparatory sketches and concept artworks for the cinema, together with 45 original costumes, models and props used in the iconic films. Fans visiting will be able to walk through the exhibition, which runs in chronological order, with each room offering guests a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the mythical DC Universe. ‘DC Exhibition: Dawn of Super Heroes’ features: • Exclusive artworks from the highly-acclaimed Wonder Woman film, directed by Patty Jenkins, that premiered in the summer of 2017. • Costumes and props from more recent films such as; 1989 to 1999’s Batman franchise directed by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher, the acclaimed The Dark Knight trilogy directed by Christopher

3 6 J U LY 2 0 1 8

Nolan, as well as The Man of Steel, Batman V Superman and the recent Justice League by Zack Snyder. • Original drawings of DC’s stable of famous Super Heroes and Super Villains. • Original costumes from blockbuster DC films including the famous cape worn by Christopher Reeve in the Superman movies and Lynda Carter’s iconic Wonder Woman costume from the 1970s. The exhibition showcases almost a century of artistic creations that followed the introduction of an innovative new genre imagined by two adolescents from Cleveland, Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, the creators of Superman. First introduced in Action Comics #1 in 1938, Superman, the world’s first Super Hero, quickly revolutionised the era, influencing art, literature, fashion, TV and film. While Superman is a tireless champion dedicated to protecting life and battling injustice with his array of superpowers and abilities, Batman is a mortal man fighting crime using his intellect, physical training, and an arsenal of gadgets and vehicles. They are two opposites - the near-god and simple mortal. However, this contemporary mythology would not have been complete without the fundamental presence of Wonder Woman, a character who became a trailblazer and symbol for peace, justice and equality. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman became the foundation for the genre on which all subsequent Super Heroes are based.

EQUINE LIFESTYLE from PENN ROAD STUDIO

acqueline Ferguson of Penn Road Studio has now moved into Equine photography. “I am really excited about my latest work. This year I have spent a considerable amount of time in the New Forest developing my existing family portrait photoshoots to incorporate the beauty of equine elegance.” Her reputation precedes her and she is now widely known for her original, creative, and beautifully composed photographs of families, both with & without their animals. Her passion for photography and the equine world makes her capable of capturing emotional and dynamic photographs of horses. As a professional photographer offering photography for both individuals and equine professionals she captures the unique bond between humans and their equine partners to create memories that will last a lifetime, creating outstanding portfolios for equine professionals including breeders, vets, and trainers. Jacqueline is keen to publicise, to all horse and pony owners that this is a new, innovative style of photography that includes not only a portrait of your horse, but also the emotional connection between horse, owner and their whole family. Included in the service, Jacqueline visits your stables, yard or livery, acquaints herself with the environments and people, before investing time introducing herself to the horse, with a view to drawing the best out of them all during the shoot itself. She then concentrates absolutely on the art of her skill. The images are created with a promise of quality and the words of her clients are very encouraging: “One of the best horsey days we have spent together as mother, daughter and grandmother. We

are so excited by the photos and the portfolio box is a coffee table favourite.” “Jacqueline is incredible, I would recommend her absolutely as it makes such a difference when your photographer understands the equine breed, their flattering positions and the emotional connection shared between the owner and their horse. Previously “Jed” was so uninterested yet Jacqueline managed to get his attention, capturing sumptuous photos of him! She is patient, friendly and really so much fun to be with. It was a great experience and we were right to choose her.” These endorsements make her even more determined to achieve her ambition of photographing the Queen on horseback in Windsor Great Park, having photographed her previously at a private commission within the exclusive Cavalry and Guards Club. The most iconic classic cars of all time They might not be able to keep pace with the performance of modern motors, but their looks and heritage still pack appeal. Tristan Shale-Hester takes a look at some of the most iconic cars ever made.

O

n the whole, classic cars aren’t able to match their modern counterparts in terms of performance, comfort and reliability. However, that’s not really what their purpose is any more. Above all else, classic cars should evoke emotion. Everything about them - the looks, the sound, even the smell - should provoke a feeling of nostalgic longing for the golden age of motoring. Countless amazing cars have been built in the past, but just a few have stood out as being absolute icons. Here, we take a look back at some of the most unmistakable and unmissable cars ever created...

Jaguar E-Type It’s not hard to understand why the Jaguar E-Type is so iconic - just look at it! Enzo Ferrari described it as “the most beautiful car ever made”, and we think he had a point. Aside from the amazing looks, it had relatively blistering performance figures for its day. The Series 1 was launched in 1961 and was available with either a 3.8-litre or 4.2-litre straight-six engine, both of which produced 265bhp. Shortly after the E-Type was first launched, Jaguar brought out a sportier Low Drag variant, which was followed by an even quicker Lightweight version. The standard production E-Type carried on into the 1970s, with the Series 3 featuring a 5.3-litre V12 engine.

4 2 J U LY 2 0 1 8

Ferrari 250 GTO Development of the 250 GTO was interesting to say the least. It was initially led by chief designer Giotto Bizzarrini, until he was fired following an argument with Enzo Ferrari. The car was completed by Mauro Forghieri, who worked in conjunction with coachbuilders Scaglietti. The car was launched in 1962 and 39 examples were built, but FIA regulations required that at least 100 units of a model needed to be produced before it could be homologated for Group 3 GT racing. Ferrari got round this by numbering the chassis of each car out of sequence and then moving them around all over the place to give the impression that 100 examples had indeed been built. The 250 GTO made its racing debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1962, where it finished second to another Ferrari - the 250 TR. It went on to win the ‘more than 2000cc’ class of the FIA International Championship for GT Manufacturers in 1962, 1963 and 1964. In 2014, Bonhams sold a 250 GTO for an eye-watering £27.1m, making it the most expensive car to ever sell at auction.

Ford GT40

Mini

In the early 1960s, Henry Ford II spent several million dollars attempting to buy Ferrari. As a result, he was most displeased when Enzo Ferrari abruptly cut off negotiations. He decided that an act of vengeance was in order. Ford entered talks with British manufacturer Lola and gave a single gargantuan order - beat Ferrari at Le Mans. The result was the Lola Mk6-based Ford GT40. The GT40 Mk2 was the most successful variant of the car. It featured a 7.0-litre V8 engine and produced around 485bhp. In the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans, it finished 1-2-3, while it achieved 1-2-3-5 at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

The late 1950s were an interesting time for the UK motor industry. The Suez Crisis forced the British government to bring back petrol rationing, so there was a need for an affordable car of the people that could be mass-produced and had great fuel economy. The end result was one of the most iconic vehicles of all time - the Mini. Starting life as the Morris Mini and later becoming the Austin Mini, this tiny car packed a huge amount of fun, especially once the quick Cooper S version came out. It even had a successful motorsport run, winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 and 1967. It placed first in 1966 too, but was disqualified for breaching rules regarding headlight dipping.

Mercedes-Benz 300SL The Mercedes-Benz W194 was hugely successful as a racing car, which led the German marque to the decision to build a road-going version called the 300SL. Launched in 1954, the 300SL featured a 3.0-litre straight-six engine, which produced up to 240bhp in its most powerful configuration. The 160mph top speed that resulted meant that the 300SL was the fastest production car of its day. Today, the most sought-after version is the Gullwing model, on which the two doors ostentatiously lift high into the air.

Lamborghini Miura Ferruccio Lamborghini much preferred GT cars to sportier models, which meant that when his engineers decided they wanted to build a pure performance car, they had to do it in their own spare time. The team created a prototype called the P400, which convinced the Lamborghini boss that a performance-focused supercar could be a useful marketing tool for his company. Further development went into the vehicle and the result was the Miura. It featured a mid-mounted 3.9-litre V12. The car was hugely popular at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show and went on sale the following year. It’s one of Lamborghini’s best-known models now, not least for its appearance in the opening scene of The Italian Job.

Porsche 911 Of all the cars that have ever existed, it’s hard to think of one that has a more recognisable design than the Porsche 911 - it could be argued the car’s exterior aesthetics have remained fairly unchanged throughout its 50-year-plus history. Production of the first 911 began in 1964, kicking off the unmistakable design of the tubular headlights and sloping rear roofline, along with another trademark Porsche design cue - the rear-mounted flat-six engine. There have been a huge number of different 911s over the years, including the Carrera RS, Turbo, Targa, R, GT2 RS and many more. However, no matter how many great versions of a car are made, it’s hard to beat an original in terms of classic kudos. 4 4 J U LY 2 0 1 8

HOW GEMMED UP ARE YOU ON YOUR JEWELS? M

Best in class jewels and gemstomes in demand and prices soaring at auction

eteoric price rises for top-quality antique jewellery and gemstones mean tens of thousands of Britons may be sitting on valuable family heirlooms without knowing their true value. Coloured diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds, as well as fine pieces of jewellery from key eras like the 1920s and 1930s, have enjoyed unbroken price rises over the past decade, according to industry experts. Analysing lots sold at auction, Bonhams is reporting excellent prices now being achieved at auction versus a decade ago. These include a 970

per cent price increase for sapphires; a 1,100 per cent increase for rubies and a 1,900 per cent price increase for emeralds. Prices for Art Deco (1920s and 1930s) and Belle Époque (1890 to 1915) jewellery have soared by a remarkable 72 per cent since 2007. Antique jewellery has risen by 54 per cent and jewellery from the post war era (1945-1975) has risen by 89 per cent during the same period according to data released by Art Market Research. Such rises mean many owners may be sitting on jewellery they rarely wear or may have inherited that is worth far more than they realise. Emily Barber, Head of Bonhams Jewellery Department for the UK, said: “Investors are rapidly recognising the opportunities of collecting jewellery and, in the process, driving up prices of an already limited commodity. “As a result, we are opening up our doors virtually through our Bonhams Jewellery in June campaign and will also be conducting a series of valuations in London and the surrounding area in the next two months. We would love to see what gems and pieces of jewellery people have tucked away in their jewellery boxes and in safe deposit boxes. Now is a great time to get an up-to-date valuation, especially for those who don’t realise the value of the pieces they own.” According to newly released data from the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index, which tracks the price growth of 10 luxury investment sectors over the past 12 months, jewellery is a consistently strong performer. The research shows that jewellery as an alternative asset class increased by 138 per cent in the last 10 years.

What’s hot The greatest price gains are being seen with fancy coloured diamonds, exceptional colourless diamonds, Burmese rubies, Colombian emeralds, Kashmir and Ceylon sapphires, natural pearls, as well as pieces of jewellery from key eras such as the Art Deco period and certain contemporary designers. 5 4 J U LY 2 0 1 8

Top 10 list of hot jewels • Coloured diamonds • Rubies • Colourless diamonds/white diamonds • Sapphires • Emeralds • Belle Epoque/Art Deco Jewellery • Designer jewellery eg from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Suzanne Belperron, Tiffany • Natural pearls • Artist jewellery • Spinels Source: Bonhams Bonhams is launching its Jewellery in June campaign to help people establish if they have a piece of value. It has set up a dedicated webpage where it is possible to communicate directly with a jewellery specialist at www.bonhams.com/jewelleryinjune and arrange a free up-to-date market valuation at its offices throughout the whole of the month. In addition, people can also call Bonhams on (0)20 7468 8285 to arrange an appointment for a complimentary valuation in either its London offices or one nearest to where you live quoting ‘Jewellery in June’.

A pair of Art Deco ruby and diamond clip brooches by Cartier, circa 1925. Estimate: £80,000-120,000. Sold for: £482,500. Emily Barber of Bonhams comments: “The vendor sought Bonhams’ advice with his family legacy of 88 pieces of period jewellery dating from the late 19th century to the 1930s. The extraordinary collection had been relegated to a safety deposit box without the family realising the pieces had increased significantly in value. Bonhams reviewed the collection, which included simple brooches to wonderful examples of Art Deco design, and advised on its current market value. The gentleman, surprised by the increase in value, instructed Bonhams to handle the sale of all the jewels which went on to sell for double and triple their estimated prices. He was absolutely delighted when we told him the final sale total had exceeded £1 million.”

An Art Deco emerald and diamond ring, circa 1930. Estimate: £8,000-10,000. Sold for: £23,570. This emerald was of Colombian origin, with moderate oil. It had a beautiful colour and octagonal cut. The auction market for fine emeralds remains very strong. It was recently inherited by the vendor who sold it so that the proceeds could go to her two daughters both at university, so it was great that the ring achieve twice its original estimate!

ASK THE EXPERT Knee pain at a glance is a Consultant Knee, Hip and Sports Injury Surgeon at One Stop Doctors

Mr David Houlihan-Burne

Q Will knee pain go away naturally? A It depends on the cause of the pain. For example, a sprain or strain will usually heal after a few days or weeks. However, if you have had knee pain that does not go away, gets worse at night or when you bend or straighten, or is sudden and severe in onset, it could be a sign of damage or injury. The best course of action is to arrange to see an Orthopaedic Consultant or Physiotherapist who specialises in joints and bones. Q What causes knee pain? A There can be many different reasons. In younger people, particularly those who play a lot of sport, it could be caused by damage to a ligament or the meniscal cartilage in the knee. From middle age onwards, osteoarthritis becomes the most common cause of knee pain and is a result of wear and tear to the end of the bones and cartilage in the knee joint. Q What can be done to relieve knee pain? A In the first case, your Consultant may suggest pain medication combined with a referral to physiotherapy for exercises to strengthen the

6 6 J U LY 2 0 1 8

muscles around the knee. If these do not work, you may need a scan of the knee. Corticosteroid injections into the joint can also be effective at relieving pain and increasing movement. If these do not work, depending on the diagnosis and scan results, your Consultant may suggest an operation such as a knee arthroscopy, a keyhole procedure to look inside the knee and repair and remove any damaged areas of cartilage, bone or ligament. Q Will I need a knee replacement? A A knee replacement is only offered when other treatments have been tried, but the pain or restricted mobility is impacting on your everyday life. Most often a knee replacement is not needed until you’re 60 or over, but they can last for 15 years or more and allow you to resume many of the activities you enjoyed before your knee problem. Summer’s Back! Summer may be back – but is your back ready for summer?

T

he temperature is rising, which means we’re all showing a lot more skin. With the party and wedding season in full swing, there’s one part of the body that often gets forgotten – the back. It may be difficult to reach when you’re moisturising, and you can’t see it easily in the mirror, but in the summer months it is on display and needs to be in top condition.

A unique, bespoke approach to treating your back For many people the back can be a problem area. It can be prone to acne, and the resulting scarring. It can also suffer from pigmentation, an uneven tone or a lack of smoothness. That’s why at Riverbanks Wellness, we have devised a treatment which is designed to improve the area we tend to forget about, yet which is so important to our overall skin health. Our back treatment addresses single or multiple skin concerns, and is great for men and women wanting to rejuvenate their skin. Every back is different, and needs personalised, custom care and hydration. This hard-working, tailored back treatment will make any back ready to bsun-kissed. 6 8 july 2 0 1 8

Protection is more important than ever In the season of swimwear, wedding outfits and backless party dresses, it’s more important than ever to protect vulnerable areas from the sun’s harmful rays. The back is particularly at risk because it spends so much of the year covered up. With maximum protection against UVA, UVB, visible light, infrared-A, free radicals and DNA damage, nothing protects your skin like Heliocare 360°. Its revolutionary, multi-action formulations provide SPF50+ broad-spectrum protection, which shields the skin’s surface from UVA, UVB and visible light damage.

Something for everyone There’s a Heliocare 360° for every skin type. With a range of nourishing and elegant formulations, each one will leave your skin feeling beautiful today, and give you the ultimate daily defence you need for tomorrow, keeping your skin radiant and healthy. And with the handy body-pump bottle, you can cover every bit of your body, including those awkward-to-reach areas below the shoulder blades, so your back will stay healthy and radiant throughout the sunniest days of the year.

Beautifully bronzed

Katie Wright asks

the experts to share their advice for self-tan virgins.

E

verybody knows at least one: the fake tan-aholic who always looks beautifully bronzed even in the dead of winter. For those who’ve been slathering on the dihydroxyacetone (that’s the active ingredient, FYI) since their teens, achieving that just-been-onhols glow is a doddle, but what if you’ve always been too scared to venture down the self-tan route? If visions of ending up looking like David Dickinson or Ross from Friends after his spray tan disaster have deterred you, you needn’t worry - a subtle life-like tan is easily achievable at home. “It doesn’t have to be scary,” says Carly Hobbs, tanning expert and Sienna X brand ambassador. “If you’re new to tanning, take things slowly and start with the best kind of products - and preparation is everything.” So how exactly do you prepare and what are the best tanning products for newbies? Here, Hobbs and two other tanning pros share their top tips for before, during and after your tan...

7 0 J U LY 2 0 1 8

Before: How to prepare your skin for fake tan “For as long as possible pre-tanning, exfoliate and moisturise as much as possible to keep skin soft, supple and tan-ready,” says Hobbs. “On the day of your tan, exfoliate to get rid of that last bit of dead skin cell build up.” Waxing should be done 24 hours before tanning and shaving 12 hours before: “Leaving these time frames allows the follicles, from where the hairs are whipped out, time to calm down and the pores on the surrounding skin to close so you don’t get a spotty tan,” she explains. “Apply a coat of nail polish to your nails on your hands and feet, as this will prevent tan from staining the nail plate,” says Marissa Carter, founder of tanning brand Cocoa Brown. If you have dark circles under your eyes, Carter advises applying Vaseline to stop the tan from further darkening that area: “You can also add a small amount of petroleum jelly through your eyebrows to prevent the tan from discolouring them too.”

“Apply a coat of nail polish to your nails on your hands and feet, as this will prevent tan from staining the nail plate”

the best products for beginners During: The best tanning technique While moisturising in the week leading up to your tan is important, skip the lotion on the day: “Ensure your skin is free from any products, moisturisers, oils, make-up and deodorant on the day you tan as this can affect the final results,” warns Jayne Cooper, St Tropez skin-finishing expert. “St Tropez Gradual Tan One Minute Everyday Pre-Shower Tanning Mousse is the perfect product for beginners. Simply apply to dry skin with or without a mitt, leave for just one minute and shower as normal and your tan will develop over the next eight hours.” If you are using a product that requires a longer development time, you must use a mitt. “Apply your chosen tan in upward sweeping movements, overlapping each area,” Cooper recommends. “Let your tan dry before having a drink or brushing your teeth as accidental drips may wash away the colour. This also applies to tanning with wet hair,” says Carter. Same goes for doing the dishes, and you can’t get sweaty so exercise is out of the question. “Sit back and relax in loose clothes as your tan develops, ideally go bra-less too so you don’t dent or mark your gorgeous glow,” Hobbs says. “Have a quick warm, not hot, shower after your development time, but don’t use shower gel all over in the shower. Instead keep soap or cleanser to just bits and pits so not to strip off all your hard bronzing work.”

After: How to treat your tan So you’ve prepped thoroughly, tanned carefully and now you’re bronzed to perfection. Well done! Now what? “The first time you shower after you’ve applied your tan, use shower gel but don’t exfoliate your skin,” warns Carter. “Moisturise daily with an oil-free moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and gently exfoliate every two to three days, which can extend your tan by up to three days,” Cooper says. “Self tans will last on average five to seven days depending on which product you’re using.” Once it’s faded, exfoliating or using a tan remover mitt will remove any last traces. “Don’t forget your SPF when going out even when you’re tanning - faking it doesn’t protect you from the sun,” Hobbs says. “And if ever you want to strip off your tan, dive into the swimming pool. The chlorine will pare back all of the colour!” J U LY 2 0 1 8 7 1

How to get vitamin D from sunlight Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, and we get most of our vitamin D from exposure to sunlight. But how do we get enough without risking sun damage?

E

veryone needs vitamin D to absorb calcium and phosphorus from their diet. These minerals are important for healthy bones. A lack of vitamin D can cause bones to become soft and weak, which can lead to bone deformities. In children, for example, a lack of vitamin D can lead to rickets. In adults, it can lead to osteomalacia, which causes bone pain and tenderness.

HOW DO WE GET VITAMIN D? Our body creates most of our vitamin D from direct sunlight on our skin. We also get vitamin D from some foods – including eggs, meat and oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines. Vitamin D is also added to all infant formula milk, as well as some breakfast cereals, soya products, dairy products, powdered milks and fat spreads.

VITAMIN D AND YOU The amount of time you need to spend in the sun for your skin to make enough vitamin D is different for every person. Short daily periods of sun exposure without sunscreen during the summer months (April to October) are enough for most people to make enough vitamin D. Evidence suggests that the most effective time of day for vitamin D production is between 11am and 3pm. A short period of time in the sun means just a few minutes – evidence suggests that about 10 -15 minutes is enough for most lighter-skinned people – and is less than the time it takes you to start going red or burn. The larger the area of skin that is exposed to sunlight, the more chance there is of making enough vitamin D before you start to burn. People with darker skin will need tospend longer in the sun to produce the same amount of vitamin D. The longer you stay in the sun, especially for prolonged periods without sun protection, the greater your risk of skin cancer. Remember to cover up or protect your skin before the time it takes you 7 2 J U LY 2 0 1 8

to start turning red or burn. Stay covered up for most of the time you spend outside and use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.

WHO IS AT RISK OF VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY? Some groups of the population are at risk of vitamin D deficiency, and the Department of Health advises that they take daily vitamin D supplements. These groups are: all pregnant and breastfeeding women all babies and young children from six months to five years old (unless they are having more than 500ml a day of infant formula) older people, aged 65 + people who are not exposed to much sun – for example, those who cover their skin, or who are housebound or confined indoors for long periods

CAN YOU HAVE TOO MUCH VITAMIN D? People who take supplements are advised not to take more than 25 micrograms (μg) of vitamin D a day, as intakes from supplements above this amount could be harmful, according to the UK Expert Group on Vitamins and Minerals. The amount of vitamin D contained in supplements is sometimes expressed in international units (IU), where 40 IU equals 1μg of vitamin D. Your body doesn’t make too much vitamin D from sun exposure, but always cover up or protect your skin before the time it takes you to start turning red or burn.

“The amount of time you need to spend in the sun for your skin to make enough vitamin D is different for every person”

THERAPY Tailored to you

O

ne in four people in the UK will experience mental health issues each year. According to official figures, one in six report a common problem, such as anxiety and depression, in any given week. Yet despite the high numbers of people suffering from anxiety and depression, many don’t realise that dealing with a mental health issue is similar to dealing with a physical issue – the problem is unlikely to resolve by itself and it’s best to seek professional help. Reflections Bespoke Therapy Centre, in Edgware, specialises in treating a variety of mental health issues, from addiction to obsessive compulsive disorder. The approach at Reflections is to take into consideration all aspects of the self, offering bespoke programmes that also include nutrition, personal training, meditation and Tai Chi. On their first visit to the centre, the client goes through an in-depth assessment after which we choose the most effective type of therapy and therapist for the client’s needs. “We realised that a group of therapists working together can achieve more than an individual therapist. At Reflections our group of therapists, with complementary skillsets, work together as a team,” says clinical manager Zahava Bloom. How do people know if they need to see a

therapist? According to Bloom, there are three steps to consider before choosing a therapist that’s right for you. “Consider the personal characteristics of the therapist you would prefer: male or female, older or younger, someone of the same faith, and so on,” she says. “Look at the appropriate level of experience of the therapist and also which is likely to be the best type of therapy for your specific issue.” But for some people, there’s a barrier before even getting to that point. “There are various reasons why people are reluctant to undergo therapy,” Bloom adds. “Mostly they feel it is unlikely to be effective, takes up a considerable amount of time and money, or will be an uncomfortable or painful process. We reassure them by saying that although not all therapy is successful, this is only true when either people do not click or get on with their therapist, or that they have the wrong type of therapy for their issues.” At Reflections we believe that different types of conditions need different specialists and different types of therapy and this is how we are different from other therapy centres. Reflections Bespoke Therapy centre combines a warm, homely atmosphere with a private, confidential and safe environment for any treatment you might need. Reflections Bespoke Therapy Centre, Edgware. Is vasectomy the right move for you?

D

on’t know where to start? A vasectomy is an important decision and it’s advised that you carefully consider the procedure by doing your homework and discussing it with others who may be involved in the decision. That’s where we come in, we’re here to provide you with some key information and support you through the procedure, if you decide it’s for you. What is a vasectomy? A vasectomy, also known as male sterilisation, is a surgical procedure resulting in a permanent form of contraception for men which is more than 99% effective. It’s a relatively quick and painless procedure, usually performed under local anaesthetic and in most cases you’ll be able to return home on the same day. Does a vasectomy protect me from sexually transmitted infections/disease? The long and short of that question is no. Although it’s a form of contraception, a vasectomy doesn’t protect you from contracting or passing on sexually transmitted infections/diseases. Will it affect my sex life? It doesn’t affect your ability to enjoy sex nor your sex drive. You’ll still have erections and ejaculate, but your semen will no longer contain sperm. Sex can resume as soon as it is comfortable for you to do so. However, another form of contraception must be used for at least 9-12 weeks after the procedure to allow full clearing of any remaining sperm in your tubes.

7 6 J U LY 2 0 1 8

Is it possible to reverse the procedure? Although a vasectomy reversal is possible, if this is a burning question in your mind it’s unlikely that you should go ahead with the procedure. You should only have a vasectomy if you’re certain you don’t want any more children or don’t want children at all. Some men choose to freeze their sperm before treatment and this could be an option for you. Is this solely a personal decision? Of course, it’s your body and the ultimate decision lies with you. However, it is hugely important that if you’re in a relationship, you make this decision together. The consultant shouldn’t be the first person you talk to about this procedure. It is advised that you take time to think this decision through before visiting an urologist. I feel a little embarrassed – is the procedure awkward? Although it’s cliché, and you hear it often, it’s true – urologists see this day in, day out so there is no need to feel overly embarrassed or awkward. It is a short, 15 minute procedure, and although you shouldn’t feel any pain due to the anaesthetic, the consultant won’t be focusing on your rosy cheeks so there really is nothing to worry about. Once the deed is done Although mild discomfort, swelling and bruising of your scrotum is expected for a few days after a vasectomy, recovery is often swift and many return to work within a day or two.

Strike a pose in London

The sixties were swinging, the seventies went hippie, the eighties spawned punk, the nineties got grunge and today? According to Gity Monsef, Creative Director of Fashion and Textile Museum, “the world is getting smaller - everything cross-integrates. ondon is at the heart of designer and independent fashion with London Fashion Week leading the way. Organised by British Fashion Council and taking place twice a year, prestigious designers present their next season’s collections to a star-studded audience, with high street brands following suite with their own take on new designs from the catwalk. In Summer 2012, London Fashion Week for the first time introduced Men’s Collections, and now just as sought-after and exciting as the Women’s catwalk. Leading designer brands have made London their home with exclusive boutiques such as Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry, Gucci, Emporio Armani, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Prada, just some that you can discover on Mayfair’s Bond Street. Sloane Street brings you equally high-profile expensive brands like Boodles, Cartier, Dior, Gucci, Bulgari and Alexandre Paris. Mount Street in Mayfair has become a designer lover’s paradise with Christian Louboutin, Dunhill London, Pringle of Scotland, Loewe Madrid among the stores selling

What I pack in my holiday suitcase

W

hat I love most about Summer is our holiday abroad together as a family. I look forward to swimming in the sea, shell hunting with my son, cocktails whilst watching the sunset and enjoying the ease of Summer holiday dressing. Packing can be stressful, especially if you are packing for more than one person, you find yourself bottom of the pile and with the smallest space in the case left! Sticking to some holiday wardrobe rules that you can make for yourself makes it easier to shop for future holidays. You can simply replace the pieces you’ve worn to death, add in a few extras for longer breaks and throw in a trend-led piece to keep your look up to date. By creating a list each year it ensures you don’t go ‘overboard’ with your spending and therefore can’t fit everything in your suitcase! Every year we over pack, so by sticking to the same colour palette makes life so much easier especially when adding in accessories such as bags, shoes and earrings. It also makes getting ready stress-free as your pieces blend together seamlessly, making you look chic and pulled together. One of my stead-fast rules is don’t pack anything you wouldn’t wear at home, which is why I try on everything before I pack to ensure that year on year it still fits or it still fits into my holiday wardrobe. Making my holiday wardrobe work together is slightly harder as you are so limited to space than in your wardrobe at home. I try and pack in outfits for the evening or any daytime trips we have planned. I lay everything out and try and make items work with two different pieces that I am taking. At the last point before packing the bag, I always take 2-3 items out as they will never see the light of day. I’ve put together my go-to pieces that I am 8 0 J U LY 2 0 1 8

currently packing for my holiday and I wouldn’t leave home without.

Beach bag A stylish yet sturdy beach bag is a Summer holiday essential. It needs to be big enough to carry your book, sunscream, towels, swim stuff and potentially all manner of kids paraphernalia! I also suggest taking a smaller durable organiser to protect your phone and purse from heat and water damage.

Hat As well as suncare your holiday must-haves should include a wide-brimmed hat which will help protect from UVA rays. If you don’t fancy wearing your sun hat at the airport, make sure you pack it with the inside full of something like lingerie or socks to help it keep its shape.

Evening Jacket I find this the one item that when clients pack for holiday they often don’t have or are undecided whether to take one. It is always wise to take one with you, or like me, I will be taking two as I love that they change my outfits up.

A statement dress This Summer feels like it’s the season of the dress so there are lots of different styles and prints to choose from. Something in a bright summer print that is easily packed in my suitcase and makes me smile when I wear it, also looks great with a tan! Whatever era or style you are trying to fashion, investing in an antique wardrobe or armoire is a quickfire way to make an impact instantly. The Blue Wardrobe would be a great choice for adding a pop of colour to a room, whereas the Pastel Green Vintage Wardrobe or Pink Vintage Wardrobe would be ideal for a country-styled home. But if you’re looking for a traditional armoire to command attention, the Wooden Vintage Wardrobe is a fine example of an original colonial wardrobe made by expert craftsmen from solid teak. So, whether you are aiming to create a rustic farmhouse feel, or add an antique touch to an industrial space, you are sure to find something special to make a striking statement at Scaramanga. Scaramanga’s old, vintage, retro and antique wooden storage cabinets and cupboards are not new or made to look old. They may have small marks and scratches on them, which are consistent with their age and original use, which adds to their unique character and appeal. www.scaramangashop.co.uk

Join the millions in the Conservatory Party

A

ccording to Wikipedia “a manifesto is a written public declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. It often is political in nature, but may present an individual’s life stance.” If and when replacing a conservatory with a modern thermally efficient double glazed one, or adding new glass extensions like conservatories and orangeries, the manifesto in such circumstances is clearly going to be more tailored to one or two individuals tastes, needs and requirements, plus probably the quality of living these individuals want for their family, friends and visitors. 8 6 J U LY 2 0 1 8

Consequently to ensure any new or replacement conservatory adds valuable high quality living space that is usable 24/7 to your home, here is a brief summary of the Conservatory Party’s manifesto to ensure you get what you expect, and don’t end up with an empty room with an unpleasant living environment:• No conservatory to be too hot in summer and/or too cold in winter • All conservatories must be leak proof, plus as draught proof as possible • All conservatories need to be double glazed with high performing Low E Argon filled sealed units with warm edge spacer bars and soft coat heat

“All conservatories must be leak proof, plus as draught proof as possible”

retentive glass to prevent too much heat loss or too much solar gain • Any glass extension to be designed bespoke to your property, so that it looks part of the initial build and not an after-thought. • Important that bricks (or render) not only match, but so do the brick courses or render painted same colour as existing dwelling • Be sure of the quality of workmanship and product by visiting reference sites and the installers showroom before placing any order • The glass used in any conservatory must all be toughened safety glass and have a high specification, and when conservatories are south facing, the exterior glass to a have a heat reflective coating • The concrete floor to contain 65mm-100mm deep proven floor insulation such as Celotex or Jabolite • Wherever possible all conservatory roofs to be double glazed with thermally efficient glass and not have noisy and ugly looking polycarbonate • Any side or dwarf walls will conform to current building regulations for extensions and have thermally efficient cavity wall insulation • Every new conservatory should come with a fully comprehensive 10 year parts and labour warranty with no call out charges during the guarantee period that is worth the paper it is written on (so before joining the Conservatory Party it is important to make sure your installer is well established, trustworthy and has a proven reputation for build quality and fulfilling warranties) • All new conservatories must have sufficient ventilation i.e. have enough opening vents on the upright parts, and at least one double glazed roof vent (Larger conservatories will need more than one roof vent) • Conservatories must have enough independent heating so that they are warm and comfortable throughout all winters and on cold summer evenings • Ensure the ground workers, double glazing fitters, plumbers, bricklayers, plasterers are experienced and that the electrician is fully qualified and accredited • All new conservatories being built under permitted development (i.e. without planning permission or Building Regulation Approval)

must have compliant exterior doors between the existing property and the new conservatory. Such structures must be under 30 square metres, and not project more than 4m on detached houses and no more than 3m on semi-detached houses. These glass extensions must have walls that are at least 50% double glazed and translucent roof of 70% or more. Find out about the planning rules and Building Regulations before ordering a new conservatory Consequently, if you do decide to join “the Conservatory Party” and benefit from the extra high quality living space a conservatory affords, make sure that your conservatory supplier and installer can and will fulfil every one of the above Conservatory Party manifesto pledges.

he welcome onset of long summer days provides a great opportunity to breathe new life into your tired furniture and seek out the latest designs in comfortable, supportive seating. The application of sound ergonomic principles and German technology have created a furniture range that will both appeal to your eye and provide the most relaxing furniture available today. Himolla have introduced the Cumuly reclining action that is a simple two stage process that initially raises the integral footrest and then allows the backrest to be independently adjusted. The mechanism incorporates a ‘tilt in space’ mechanism, recommended by backcare professionals to maintain back support through the reclining process. Complemented by an adjustable neckrest, TV watching becomes a sublime experience. No more spare footstools taking up space in the lounge as the footrest retracts from sight leaving clean lines and less clutter. There is a choice of manual recliner or powered mechanism for more precise body position and if desired, one can opt for a rechargeable battery system, negating any trailing wires across the floor. Himolla have also introduced a swivel recliner with a lift feature for the less able. So now it is possible to have an assistive chair with modern, contemporary styling and the full range of leather and fabric options.

he kitchen is your workshop in which you create meals and spend a lot of time. Prepare a space for yourself in which you will feel good and that will inspire you to compose new meals, detox, or simply cook Sunday chicken soup. The kitchen is a good place to introduce vivid colours and interesting designs - both on the walls and furniture. Especially if you have a kitchen designed in Scandinavian or minimalist style. Bold colours will add warmth, dynamics, and energy to an arrangement and delicate pastels will complete the stark space. What colours can be applied and what techniques can be used to make changes?

A world of colour Yellow, lemon, honey-coloured

Yellow is a colour that is taking the world by storm and replacing pink, which has been fashionable for several years. Generation Z considers it their favourite colour, that screams “look at me.” Yellow is bold and vivid. When you use it on a larger surface, e.g. walls, cabinet doors or kitchen countertops, the kitchen will become bright and optimistic. If you don’t want to introduce too much yellow into your kitchen, select a few elements – niche, cabinet, table, and wrap them with lemoncoloured stickers.

Ultra Violet, or violet with a touch of blue Ultra Violet is the colour of the year 2018, announced by the Pantone Institute, i.e. the global colour specialists. Violet is mysterious, mystical and spiritual. It gives the space an artistic and creative character. As it is a strong and definite colour, it is good to use on smaller spaces - a wall that is naturally illuminated, or several kitchen cabinet doors.

Oriental blue Blue is a cool, calm and attenuates colour. If vivid colours are not your favourite, choose blue, turquoise or cobalt to create a calm space in your kitchen. You can use very light shades on one of the walls to enlarge the room or use darker blue variants on kitchen furniture elements to cool a room with lots of sun. 9 0 J U LY 2 0 1 8

Pastel pink Pink is a fresh and joyful colour, most often associated with girlishness. In rooms, it can be used as a complement to stark gray, very trendy in recent years. It also blends well with wood and the colour white. Small amounts of this colour will bring a touch of fun and sweetness to our kitchen. It’s also a good colour for those of you who are ready for delicate changes in the appearance of your kitchen and are afraid to experiment with bold colours.

Green mint Green is a soothing colour of nature – of grass, leaves, herbs, vegetables, and fruits. Bright and brisk shades, such as lime or peas, will give the kitchen an energetic and cheerful atmosphere. In turn, lighter and more subdued colours, like mint or olive, bring peace and work well on larger surfaces. Green is a safe colour for the kitchen space, it complements white colour, wooden or steel elements. It also goes well with fresh herbs kept in pots on the kitchen windowsill. www.pixers.uk

xperienced interior designers Helen Touli and Leia Anastasiou shared a vision to create a lifestyle store to inspire their clients in how to elevate their lifestyle from mediocre to magnificent. The Interior Design House opens this month in the heart of Hadley Wood. The showroom is a hub of excitement as the team showcases unique lighting, furniture, soft furnishings, architectural details and interior accessories sourced from the UK and all over Europe. “We will use the space to show a complete room as we would on a project; our first setting will be a beautiful lounge which will change every few months so that there is always something new and exciting to see. We are often asked what is our style? We like to spend time getting to know our clients so that we can understand their taste and interpret the space in the style that would be personal to them. Not only are we in tune with current trends but we can steer our clients to a more unique approach for originality and longevity. Our ethos is to create a perfect balance between practicality and aesthetics, so not only should a room be beautiful and evoke the emotions you desire, but it should also be easy to use and functional. our home space should be as on-trend as your wardrobe. And just as one wellchosen accessory can update an outfit, one on-trend piece of homeware can be all it takes to bring a room bang-up-to-date. It’s all about ringing the changes every so often, so spaces don’t look stale but fresh and contemporary. Right now, this means it’s time to embrace pineapples, a flamboyant Mexican artist, plants and lobsters - and then use them with a light touch and stand back and wait for the compliments on your style credentials.

carry forward to today, making pineapples a bold, chic choice to decorate your home with flair,” says Rebecca Snowden, interior style advisor, Furniture Choice. “Their distinctive shape and tall crowns make them a perfect choice for a playful print with lots of character - a feature wall covered in pineapple wallpaper is a cheerful addition to the home, great for the living room, kitchen, or even an entryway,” she adds. “Their sweet, kitschy appeal allows them to be utilised in unexpected ways, such as pineapple bookends, cushions, and even candle holders.” If you’ve really fallen for the fruit, Wallsauce’s Pink Pineapple Wall Mural, from £26 per square metre, would make a statement. DECOR TIP: To make this look your own, experiment with colour. For a lighter touch, play with bright, neon colours, and for more sophistication, consider a metallic finish, such as gold or bronze.

4). “If you’re looking to bring vibrancy and interest to your home, the vivid image of artist, Frida Kahlo, will add fiesta colour and lashings of character,” says Nadia McCowan Hill, Wayfair’s resident style advisor. “Having survived illness and an accident in her youth, Kahlo’s bold and unflinching image has come to symbolise triumph over pain and powerful feminism, making her an empowering addition to any interior. She’s often depicted with flowers in her hair against of backdrop of lush greenery, bold blooms and folky motifs, which give her image a boldly bohemian vibe.” DECOR TIP: To capture the spirit of the artist, style a Frida Kahlo art print against a kaleidoscope of colour and pattern. Handwoven and handmade homeware add an authentic sense of craftsmanship, and combined with colourful cushions and fresh flowers, you’ll conjure a carnival atmosphere. Mexican ‘Day of the Dead’ motifs are also appropriate.

Foliage Foliage and succulents - those fleshy leaved plants including cacti - are the go-to green accessories this year - and if you lack ‘green fingers’, just opt for those ultra-realistic and perfect-in-everydetail artificial versions. “For me, plants magically transform spaces, add texture, and are a game changer when it comes to enlivening surfaces,” says designer Abigail Ahern, whose Abigail Ahern/ Edition collection at Debenhams includes faux succulents and plants. “Faux plants are even better, as they’re pet-friendly and add a punch to any surface. Faux plants and flowers add colour, shape and life to a room, and like artwork, they are another powerful tool in your decorating arsenal. Needless to say, I am a little bit obsessed!” DECOR TIP: Too many hard angles and straight lines in a room can make a space uncomfortable - so follow interior designers, who often use plants and trees to soften corners, as they add such beautiful focal points. Remember to vary the tone of green and mix feathery, shiny, matte and prickly all together to get the most intoxicating foliage effects. 1 0 8 J U LY 2 0 1 8

The fishy trend for lobsters first swam to the surface in the spring fashion collections, and now they’re getting their claws into home decor. “Who can forget when flamingo fashion came on the scene? Those flamboyant birds appeared on everything from fabrics to wallpaper, but now lobsters are pinching their space,” says Alison Hughes, co-founder of lifestyle homeware brand, Cream Cornwall. “These bright red crustaceans have a similar appeal to flamingos - because they’re so iconic and distinctive. We have them decorating lampshades, cushions and tableware, and they’re really enjoying a moment in the sun currently. We predict more and more people will fall for lobster loveliness.” DECOR TIP: Make a statement with a lobster print or decoration, if you’re fishing for compliments on your decor credentials. Alternatively, conjure a touch of coastal cool by featuring the theme in tableware and a collection of cushions. Lobster wallpaper, £150 a roll, Oostor.com
