SUMMER AT AUBERGE DU LAC Matt Edmonds is Head Chef at Auberge du Lac, the award-winning restaurant nestled in the Brocket Hall Estate

elcome to the first entry of my first column! As you have probably guessed from my job title, this column is going to be all about food and what I get up to in and around the Auberge du Lac kitchen. Luckily for you, my job is pretty interesting and I get to meet all kinds of interesting people too, so hopefully you’ll enjoy what I have to say… I have been Head Chef at Auberge du Lac since the restaurant re-launched in February of this year, and I must say, I could not think of a better place to work right now – who else gets to look out of their window at work and see a pheasant striding across the grounds? The Brocket Hall Estate is home to an array of wildlife and the scenery is simply breath-taking. After five months on the job, I have now found my bearings and can navigate the Estate pretty well – five months may sound like a long time to find your way around, but I can tell you that 543 acres is an awful lot of land! The best thing about exploring the Estate has been discovering the many foraging hotspots – foraging has always been a passion of mine, and where possible I love to use wild, hand2 2 JULY 2 0 1 7

picked ingredients in my dishes. This month it’s been all about elderflower and cherries. There’s been a great supply on the Estate this year, and the surrounding fields and woodland areas have come in handy too. I have been sneaking out of the kitchen whenever I can to pick these ingredients, and I’ve even roped my two young sons in to help me too – it’s great fun for them, and I think it’s so important that children understand and are interested in where food comes from. I’m also passionate about supporting British producers and I source fresh, seasonal ingredients from trusted local suppliers whenever I can. My favourite ingredient at the moment has to be the baby beetroot - It’s so versatile and ridiculously tasty, so I’m currently weaving it into many of my dishes. Right, it’s back to the kitchen for me – if you’re interested in seeing what I’m creating with my foraged finds and other seasonal ingredients, do come and join us at Auberge du Lac… and do try and pick a sunny evening so you can enjoy the terrace and beautiful views!

o mark the release of the new film, Churchill, The Savoy has created the Ultimate Churchill Experience. Guests will be welcomed for a one-night stay in the Winston Churchill Personality River View Suite with the opportunity to enjoy a truly memorable Churchill-inspired stay. When The Savoy Hotel opened on August 6, 1889, Winston Churchill was 24-years-old. As a lover of the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan from boyhood, he already was a regular at the Savoy Theatre next door, having attended opening nights there with his parents as early as age 12. Mr Churchill, arguably Britain’s greatest Prime Minister became a regular visitor to the hotel throughout his entire life, and in celebration of this relationship, a suite was named after him. While dining at The Savoy in 1939, Churchill famously got the call telling him he was to be the wartime Prime Minister. Having previously founded a private dining club at The Savoy, “The Other Club” in 1910, he attended its dinners in a private capacity as often as possible until his death – in fact his final public appearance was at such a dinner in 1964. During the Second World War he lunched at The Savoy so frequently with members of his cabinet, that a suite was permanently reserved for him to enjoy one of

his famous power-naps. The Ultimate Churchill Experience includes a onenight stay with breakfast, Churchill welcome amenity, dinner at Simpson’s In The Strand, cocktails in the Beaufort Bar, a Churchill inspired Historical Tour, and two tickets to the Churchill War Rooms. Beechwood Park School A Community in Action

dward Balfour, Headmaster at Beechwood Park School in Markyate, announced this month that the cumulative total raised for Keech Hospice Care by the Beechwood Park School Parents’ Association (BPSPA) and pupils had reached a staggering £200,000. Keech Hospice Care is a local charity based near Luton, which provides free, specialist care for adults and children with life-limiting conditions as well as vital support for their family and friends. Beechwood Park School has had a close connection with Keech for over 19 years and, during this time, donations have enabled the funding of programmes such as “Girls Aloud”, a club offering friendship and practical support to some of the young teenagers supported by the charity, and to ‘Sparklers’, a sibling bereavement programme. Regional and Events Fundraising Manager for Keech, Mark Relf, who attended a celebratory assembly at Beechwood Park, thanked the School for their commitment to the charity over many years and explained to the pupils some of the work that the charity does. Mr Balfour thanked the BPSPA for its amazing achievements, saying “Beechwood Park is delighted be involved with such a worthy cause and to be part of these programmes which make such a significant difference to people’s lives”. He added that “the School is delighted to continue its links with Keech

Hospice Care long into the future.” Beechwood Park, a School for over 530 pupils, still retains the family feel of a smaller School and has an extremely active Parents’ Association who contribute time, talent and enthusiasm to produce many events, for adults and children. Whilst fun plays a major part in these events, the underlying drive is the support and care for local charities and for the School community itself. The next big fundraising event on the horizon for the BPSPA is a Venetian Masked Summer Ball. Whilst pupils are enthusiastically decorating masks to adorn the walls of the School’s Great Hall and marquee, parent volunteers are meticulously planning the event and seeking sponsors. Guests will enjoy a dazzling evening in the School’s Queen Anne-style buildings and the Capability Brown landscaped grounds. The Parents’ Association has recently funded projects including a new swimming pool complex and an outdoor classroom in support of the School’s Forest School facilities. Beechwood Park is an independent day and flexiboarding School for boys and girls age 3-13. The School is located 15 minutes from Harpenden, 20 minutes from St Albans, Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead. Concours of Elegance Hampton Court Palace, 1-3 September 2017

The world’s rarest cars in one of the world’s most exclusive settings

he Concours of Elegance proclaims itself to be “the most exclusive car park in the world”; a typically understated label for one of the classiest and most incredible motoring events on the global calendar. The venue this year is the breath-taking grounds of Hampton Court Palace; a royal setting which – with its incredible history and beauty – is the perfect pairing for the collection of rare automobiles set to arrive as part of the Concours this September. The focal point is a gathering of more than sixty unique or extremely rare cars, many of which will never have been seen before in the UK – let alone

all in one place. And, just like the palace itself, each car has a story to tell; the 1896 Arnold Benz Motor Carriage on display, for example, was the first car to ever receive a speeding ticket. The driver, Walter Arnold, was travelling 8mph in a 2mph zone and his car wasn’t preceded by a man on foot carrying a red flag – a legal requirement at the time. A policeman gave chase on his bicycle and fined Arnold for his recklessness. From 1922 is a Bentley 3 Litre, which was the first to ever race at the Le Mans 24 Hours race, kickstarting a run of wins for Bentley in 1924 and again in 1927 to 1930. Then there’s the Porsche

There are, of course, plenty of modern masterpieces on display, too. In total, more than a thousand vehicles will enter the grounds of Hampton Court Palace from 1-3 September, including the very latest high performance rarities, including the Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta, Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato and Pagani Huayra. Founder of evo magazine and the Harry’s Garage YouTube channel, Harry Metcalfe, will be bringing together a collection of these incredible modern performance cars. Over the course of the weekend many of the vehicles on display will start their engines to drive through the grounds of the palace and up onto the all-new central stage. Visitors can experience the sights, sounds and smells of some of the most important cars ever produced, while a team of experts enlightens the audience as to what exactly makes these vehicles so special.

years of Ferrari T he company’s story officially began in 1947 when the first Ferrari emerged from the historic factory entrance on Via Abetone Inferiore in Maranello. The 125 S, as it was known, embodied the passion and determination of the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari. To date Ferrari’s most important sporting successes include 15 F1 World Drivers’ Championships, 16 F1 World Constructors’ Championships, 14 Sports Car Manufacturers’ World titles, nine wins at 24 Hours of Le Mans, eight at the Mille Miglia, seven at the Targa Florio and 226 victories in F1 Grand Prix. The legendary symbol used by Ferrari has heroic origins. It was first adopted as a personal emblem by a highly decorated Italian World War I pilot, Francesco Baracca, who had it painted on

the fuselage of his aircraft. At the end of the war, Baracca’s parents offered to allow Enzo Ferrari to use the Cavallino Rampante (Prancing Horse) symbol. He adopted it as the logo for his racing Scuderia, placing it on a yellow shield in honour of his hometown of Modena and topping it with the Italian tricolour. The classic Ferrari red, however, was simply the colour assigned by the International Automobile Federation to Italian grand prix cars in the early years of the last century. As part of activities to mark the 70th anniversary of the Prancing Horse, Ferrari Tailor Made, together with the designers of Centro Stile have put a modern twist on the stylistic features and elements that distinguished 70 of the most beautiful Ferraris in history and in so doing have created 70 unique “designs”. his year marks a half century since BBC2’s Gardeners’ World was first commissioned for television, and to celebrate there was a special hour-long anniversary programme airing on the official birthday, Friday 16 June 2017. In 1967, David Attenborough, then BBC controller, decided that flowers was the ideal subject to wow the handful of people lucky enough to own a colour TV set. So the BBC took the decision to launch a brand new programme, a half hour each

“Percy Thrower was the first presenter of the programme” week on BBC2 dedicated purely to gardening. Broadcast from a real allotment in Birmingham, the show featured tips and advice from expert gardeners and inspired the public with full colour footage of new plants and flowers. It was an instant success, and Gardeners’ World was born. Percy Thrower was the first presenter of the programme, and in 1973, he received the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour. Geoff Hamilton was the longest serving presenter, and in 1985 he took the show to his own garden, Barnsdale, in Rutland. He passed away in 1996, and was taken over by Alan Titchmarsh who presented Gardeners’ World from 1996 to 2002. In 2013 he became the first RHS Ambassador. 50 years on, Gardeners’ World is now Britain’s 4 0 JULY 2 0 1 7

longest running gardening show with up to 2.6 million loyal gardening fanatics tuning in each week, with current presenters Monty Don, Rachel de Thame, Nick Bailey, Carol Klein, Mark Lane and Flo Headlam. BBC Gardeners’ World magazine was launched in 1991, with the first BBC Gardeners’ World Live show held in 1992 and has become an annual event ever since. For 2017 BBC Gardeners’ World Live returned to the NEC from 15 -18 June 2017, and celebrated in style with commemorative show gardens including a 1960’s Nostalgia Garden, showing how gardening has changed over five decades. The Royal Horticultural Society are marking the 50th anniversary of the programme with a dedicated exhibition at the RHS Lindley Library at Vincent Square, London until 18th August, and at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey until 30th June. The exhibition will explore changes in gardening trends over the lifetime of the show from the 1960s to the present day. It will bring together material from the BBC archives and the RHS Library collections to look at the events and innovations that have transformed the way we garden and how we feel about the role of our gardens as part of our everyday lives. Trends and crazes come and go, but Gardeners’ World is likely to remain a permanent fixture as long as we have that desire to step outside with a spade and trowel. edBox® is the ultimate travel gadget for children from birth until 7 years of age. It is your child’s hand luggage, ride-on suitcase and inflight bed/leg-rest, all in one. Designed by former-Norwegian Captain and engineer Halvor Holmgren and his wife, a specialist in children’s travel products, they have revolutionised flying with children. Travelling with children can be stressful, tiring and demanding. The ride-on aspect of our BedBox makes getting through long airport corridors easier, quicker and much more fun. Because of the adjustable wheels, the BedBox handles better than dad’s sports car. And as a plus, we made it into a suitcase according to carry-on dimensions, so you can use it as nappy bag or allow your kids to pack for themselves. But what about the part of the journey that you spend in the air? For many parents, the real hassle about traveling starts when entering the aircraft.

4 8 JULY 2 0 1 7

“The ride-on aspect of our BedBox makes getting through long airport corridors easier, quicker and much more fun”

Getting a child to sleep on the plane, can be one of the most horrendous parts of travelling with a young child and yet solutions for children sleeping onboard most aircrafts are very limited. The flight attendant might tell your child to get off the floor (not most comfortable option anyway!). If you have the luxury to have a row of seats to yourself, you might allow your child to sleep across the row meaning they cannot use the seatbelt (not the safest option!). And finally, if they are asleep on you; you cannot move (not the most practical option!). Therefore, the BedBox comes to the rescue: for you, your child, and every other passenger on board who wants quiet flight! Giving your child the option to lie down fully stretched out, or using it as a leg rest if they are older, means they can still use the seat belt and get some shut eye. As a parent it means you can sit back, enjoy your inflight meal and watch the inflight movies undisturbed. So. Yes, it’s a suitcase. Yes, it’s a bed. Yes, it’s a miracle.

resenting over eight weeks of events and more than 90 concerts the festival continues its founder-conductor Henry Wood’s aim of bringing the best classical music to the widest audience. Following its launch last year, the ‘Proms at…’ series returns. As well as eight Proms Chamber Music concerts at Cadogan Hall, the series presents choral music at Southwark Cathedral, music theatre at Wilton’s Music Hall, new and experimental music at the Tanks at Tate Modern, and returns to Bold Tendencies Multi-Storey Car Park in Peckham featuring The Multi-Story Orchestra and Youth Choir. Introducing the all-new LC sports coupe

exus Hatfield is introducing its latest model, the all-new LC sports coupe, to invited guests, existing customers, as well as the general public, during a weekend launch event between the 29th and 30th July. In addition to the vehicle arriving at the Hertfordshire dealership, there will be a mocktail reception, professional drivers to guide customers on test drives during the day, as well as extra staff on site to assist customers throughout the weekend. As the only official Lexus UK showroom in the county, Lexus Hatfield will be the exclusive retailer of the LC, therefore the only place in Herts to experience both versions of this exciting new grand tourer:

However, the reaction from our guests, passers-by and staff was incredible, and a number of customers have since placed orders.” One of the customers who was present during the June visit and has placed an order is David Mullineux, who commented: “I love it, and I just cannot wait to drive it. I ordered the hybrid version – the LC 500h – in Deep Blue.” In fact, over 50% of customers who test drove the LC in June at Lexus Hatfield have placed an order, with deliveries expected to start in August. Marking the beginning of a new phase for Lexus, the LC is engineering expertise and expressive design in perfect harmony, establishing the vehicle as the flagship luxury coupe in its class. It also sets new standards for styling, performance, as well as

To create even more excitement around the launch, Lexus has teamed up with superstar DJ, award-winning producer and all-round style icon, Mark Ronson, to launch “Make Your Mark”. This is a global campaign that gives music and car fans the chance to take the LC coupe driving experience to another level, creating their own soundtrack to the drive, using exclusive music compositions and instrumentation by Mark Ronson in the studio. Additionally, participants can become DJs themselves by accessing a specially created platform to produce a track using an industry-leading music sequencer. While speaking about the campaign, Mark Ronson said: “I always like to work with collaborators who are innovative and unique in and out of the studio. When I was approached by Lexus with the concept of this campaign and saw the new LC, it felt fresh and exciting. I was drawn to the idea of using music to inspire and create an experience around this car.” Head of Lexus Europe, Alain Uyttenhoven, added: “Mark is an iconic music producer behind some of the biggest hits of the decade and we couldn’t have thought of a better collaborator for

the ‘Make Your Mark’ campaign. The Lexus LC symbolizes the beginning of a new phase for Lexus, which is all about creating greater synergy between engineering and design. “Who better to work with on this than Mark - a man who has made a significant contribution to the world of music through his incredible performances and collaborations.” Make Your Mark will run until September 2017 and will deliver a range of exciting content and experiences for customers and fans alike. To get involved, visit or search online for “Lexus - Make Your Mark” Production of the LC for the UK and European market has already started at Lexus’ Motomachi plant in Japan, while the LC 500 made a second appearance at this years’ Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex.

Can a laser-emitting gadget zap away your crow’s feet? Laura Wurzal puts Tria’s new device to the test... “Specifically designed for wrinkles and lines around the eyes, Tria’s latest handheld laser device delivers thousands of microscopic laser lights when it comes in contact with the skin, to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin - the stuff that keeps you looking youthful! - so it’s important your skin is properly cleansed before use. Once ready, I started the treatment by gliding the tip of the laser in small circular motions, as advised, around my eye sockets, starting underneath the eyes and moving up to my temples. It was a tad painful at first - a stingy, pinprick sensation - and it took me a few days before I could tolerate using it for a full minute per eye. The treated area was noticeably red afterwards, but it calmed down overnight, so I carried on zapping away every night for eight weeks as recommended. And it was totally worth it! From the second week, my crow’s feet looked less defined and the skin around my eyes looked smooth and firm. Friends even noticed and asked if I had changed my eye cream or tried a new spa treatment. Now that’s what I call a result!” SmoothBeauty™ Eye Wrinkle Laser, £299

elcome to the season of colour confidence. Get ready to taste the rainbow and dive straight into zingy yellow, eye popping red and bubblegum pinks. Here’s this Summer’s guide on how to buy it, wear it and style it. But first let’s talk about how to find out what the ‘right’ colours are for you. Wearing colours that complement your natural colouring can make you look healthier, more vibrant and younger. Colour analysis determines the colours that best suit an individual based on their skin complexion, eye colour characteristics and hair colour. The analyst does this with a set of precision-dyed fabric drapes. You will then be assigned a season; Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. If you are a Spring, warm (yellow-based) saturated colours will make your skin glow. If you are a Summer, cool (blue-based), less saturated colours will look best. Winters look best in cool,

saturated colours and Autumns in warm, less saturated colours. Once you get to know your seasonal colour group, you will understand the colours worth investing in to give your skin a light and healthy glow. When it comes to fashion and style, we don’t always take this into consideration and often get stuck in a rut of buying the same colours due to lack of confidence. Knowing your colour type is essential for creating outfits that will suit you and gives you a sense of direction when building your wardrobe every season. Colour is always relative. Colour is always next to another colour. Colours affect each other. What this means is that when you are able to mirror your natural colours in your clothing, both you and your clothing benefit. This season it’s all about wearing bright bold colours but colour analysis isn’t about spending money on the latest must-have product that will make you look beautiful. It’s simply knowing a little about colour theory and the colours in your own body so that you can use this knowledge to your advantage. It’s about being an informed, savvy shopper who spends money on the right colours and is able to create fabulous outfits and making informed style choices. For years, women have seen yellow as a shade that does nothing for their skin tones, eyes or hair but there is a shade of yellow out there for everyone. It’s about knowing which one is yours and ensuring you are sticking to your right tone and shade for maximum confidence and style. From fizzy sherbet to mustard to pastel Fifties lemon, yellow was prominent on the runway proving that there is, after all, an option out there for everyone, no matter your skin tone. Nina Whitehead, Image consultant and colour analyst. Edits-Styling

“When combining treatments entirely natural results are achieved in our hands. Single area treatments often lead to an imbalance which makes work look obvious”

How to keep your Botox a secret Gone are the days where Botox should be obvious. My Invisible Aesthetics® technique is designed for those of us who would rather keep our treatments private.

ack in the day, people wanted to show off their aesthetic treatments such as Botox and filler. In fact, some from across the pond would say, “if I’m going to spend that much, I want people to know” Thankfully, that thought is not what my patients subscribe to and I am delighted because it would go against my principles of Invisible Aesthetics®. Unfortunately, obvious work is still common place and in particular when seeing lesser trained and experienced practitioners. At Riverbanks, I have been injecting for over 10 years producing discreet and natural looking results. It’s key that nobody should say to any of my patients “where do you go for your treatments” or even worse, talk behind their backs! Invisible Aesthetics® has been developed over the years as well as combing all of my experiences when I teach doctors all over the world, to respect each and every patient’s face and aim to restore a natural balance to their face. It’s definitely not about just treating one area such as the lips or the cheeks or the nose to mouth lines or jowls for example.

6 0 JULY 2 0 1 7

The face doesn’t generally age in just one place. In order to restore ones looks, I need to rebalance all the areas which have aged - this usually involves careful and precise restoration of shape and skin tone using a combination of Botox, dermal fillers and Skinboosters as well as an individual skin care program. When combining treatments entirely natural results are achieved in our hands. Single area treatments often lead to an imbalance which makes work look obvious. Many of my patients who have been coming to me for 10 years now look healthier than they did when they first started. That’s because we want they to age gracefully and look great for their age. It’s one of the reasons we have won best clinic in the UK 4 times! We also can draw upon non- needle treatments such as Ultherapy, Exilis and our famous Signature treatment as feature in the press. All of our doctors are fully trained by myself In our signature treatments such as The R-lift® and our Invisible Aesthetics® approach. I hope you all have a great summer. We are open all summer if anybody wants to see us. There will always be a smile and a warm welcome at Riverbanks. Come and enjoy The Riverbanks Experience.

Laying the perfect foundation words: Katie Wright, Press Association

ow do I find the right foundation for me? That’s the question beauty vlogging sensation Kaushal gets asked the most. Here, she shares her four fail-safe steps to find your perfect shade. With an army of 1.6 million subscribers, YouTuber Kaushal gets asked a LOT of questions about make-up. But the one she gets asked the most? How do I find the right foundation? “Because there are so many foundations on the market, it can be a bit overwhelming - or underwhelming - sometimes,” she says. Finding ‘the one’ can be a lifelong quest, but luckily Kaushal has four key pieces of advice to help you find the correct shade, whatever your skin tone. Follow these steps to find your perfect foundation...

6 2 JULY 2 0 1 7

1. Try before you buy “I always say if you’re going to get a high-end foundation, get a sample before you buy it, because the last thing you want is to spend £30 on a foundation that clearly doesn’t match you. And if they are going to give you a sample, try to get a shade lighter and a shade darker, depending on your undertone.”

2. Check the shade in natural light “If you are getting tested and you need a foundation ASAP, make sure you see what it looks like in natural lighting outside. The lighting in the stores is heavily artificial so anything can look good under those lights.”

3. Do a flash test “Always do a flash test, even if it’s just on your phone, to see if you get any flashback [white makeup marks on your face].” Yep, that means an instore selfie (or ask nicely and the counter assistant might help you out).

“If you are getting tested and you need a foundation ASAP, make sure you see what it looks like in natural lighting outside”

4. Know what type of foundation you want “Don’t buy a foundation just because someone else is using it. They might be using a really full coverage foundation but you might not actually like that. So know what you want before actually purchasing it.”

Environ HydraBoost Facial for Radiant Skin Due to temperature changes, cosmetic build up and pollution, our complexions suffer during the summer months. Show your face some TLC before your exotic escape to ensure it’s in optimal condition for those all important holiday snaps. Our facial experts tell us why the Environ Hydraboost Facial is so impressive, “Our amazing Environ Hydraboost Facial delivers exceptional hydrating results and is suitable for all skin types. Packed with nourishing anti-aging ingredients including fresh, active vitamins A and C plus antioxidants, this powerful formula is driven deep in to the lower layers of the skin via sound waves and small electrical pulses. “The result? A major boost in collagen which softens fine lines, improves skin elasticity and increases hydration. I guarantee after this treatment your face will feel radiant, renewed and ready to catch some rays.” This Environ facial is ideal post-holiday too for reducing age spots and pigmentation damage caused by the sun. Talking of rays, the sun can be incredibly damaging so it is essential you protect your skin every day of the year, not just on holiday. According to the British Skin Foundation 100,000 new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year not to mention the added threat of

premature skin ageing and wrinkles. Remember the sun’s harmful UV rays can be dangerous even on cloudy, overcast days. For this reason we also recommend wearing facial sun protection all year round. We are proud ambassadors for the Environ Professional Sun Care Range. The scientifically proven products contain filters and reflectors which provide exceptional broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Plus the range is full of powerful anti-oxidants which fight environmental aggressors. Environ products are only available through specially trained skin care professionals, so why not have a chat with one of our specialised therapists the next time you’re in the salon?

EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN BEFORE YOUR HOLIDAY! Exfoliation is essential pre-tanning prep, as it cleanses pores and removes dead skin to ensure an even base for your sun or spray tan. If you’re planning on kicking back on a sun lounger this year, we recommend booking yourself in for our rejuvenating Full Body Scrub. This luxurious pampering treatment sloughs away tired, flaky skin and includes an express moisture massage, leaving your body beautifully smooth and primed to perfection.

TRIED AND TESTED Can a lip plumper and liner combined create the pillowy lips you’ve always wanted? Katie Wright puts Code’s duo to the test... “When it comes to lip plumpers, I’ve been stung in the past - quite literally - by innocent-looking liquids that within seconds cause a fiery burning sensation that lasts for what feels like hours. There’s no such agony with Code’s pink gloss, just a minty tingle, and thankfully, it’s not as neon pink as it looks in the tube. The intense shine makes my lips appear fuller straight away, but the real revelation for me is the lip liner. A lovely neutral brownish-pink, it glides on like a dream and is the perfect base for my favourite matte liquid lipstick, meaning no feathering at the edges and plumper-looking lips. Plus, it never goes blunt (just twist the lid tight to sharpen) and it really stays put. This wonderliner is going straight in my makeup bag and staying there.” Code Lip Intense Plumper, £20; SSL Soft Smooth Lip Liner, £18 (

Stop the strain Posture advice for the workplace W

e are all familiar with the shoulder twinges and slight pain which can be caused when you’ve been sitting at a desk for too long. Workplace health is constantly in the news and is an important topic to consider, and we recommend that any physical pain you may be feeling as a result, should not be ignored. At Spire Harpenden, our physiotherapists often see patients who have symptoms of a painful neck and back as well as tension in this area which have been caused by poor posture sitting at a desk. One of our physiotherapists outlines this advice to ensure that you are comfortable at work: • Ensure a good posture when sitting. Your legs should be out in front of you slightly and your back straight. Your hips and knees should be at right angles – you may need a footrest in order to get this angle. Sit in a good comfortable chair, which needs to be adjustable to ensure your back is supported. • Move your neck and shoulders and back approximately every half an hour, even if you’re just stretching the muscles out. It’s a good idea to get up from your desk approximately every hour or two, even if just for a few minutes. • Repetitive strain injuries (RSI) are very common, especially in the wrists, elbows and shoulders. Keeping your elbows at right angles can

7 4 JULY 2 0 1 7

help reduce the risk of RSI’s as well as equipment such as wrist supports for your keyboard. Ergonomic mice and keyboards also help to reduce the risks. • Sit directly in front of your work station, at least arm’s length away from your computer screen. The top of your computer screen should be at eye level. • Did you know that sitting is one of the worst positions for your spine. Where possible things like standing desks or doing another activity which involves moving can be a great way to ease the pressure from your spine. Even some simple and regular back stretches can help to maintain back strength. If you are concerned or have any ongoing pain you might want to consider contacting a physiotherapist or your GP. At Spire Harpenden we have a large and experienced physiotherapy team who cover a broad range of specialties, including post-operative physiotherapy, acupuncture and hydrotherapy. Did you know you can pay for your own treatment? Spire Harpenden Hospital have a dedicated self-pay team waiting to help you start your journey to better health today. Call 01582 787 005 or email

Hazlemere Windows Building A New Showroom in Welwyn Garden City H

azlemere Window Company are making a considerable investment by totally refurbishing their Hertfordshire showroom inside Unit 10 Mundells Industrial Centre on Little Mundells in Welwyn Garden City, which several years ago was the location of Housemaster showroom, a brand Hazlemere incorporated into the Hazlemere Group back on 18th November 2013. Hazlemere had previously completely renovated the old Housemaster showroom within Unit 10 back in early 2014, adding many new home improvement products. However, given there have been so many positive product changes in products in the 3 years since

8 0 JULY 2 0 1 7

then, the Board of Hazlemere Window Company took the decision to make a long term commitment to their many customers in Herts, and so are investing in a much larger, ultra-modern new showroom at the same premises, by converting most of the storage and office space into more showroom space, to be able to display even more products all under one roof. In order to do this, 5 of the existing 6 conservatories and orangeries in Welwyn Garden City Showroom were demolished, leaving the new aluminium insulated solid roof conservatory that was recently installed by Hazlemere Windows to display the Ultraframe 380 Solid Roof, with lightweight plastic roof tiles and large double glazed roof

For example on display will be aluminium doors, composite doors, engineered timber front doors and UPVC doors, in different styles and bespoke colours to suit each customers taste and budget. There will be different types of aluminium and UPVC conservatories, extensions and orangeries, with a choice a double glazed glass roofs or solid tiled roofs, that come with the option of heat reflective double glazing or aluminium or plastic roof tiles. Given this major investment in Herts is a total refurbishment and expansion, Hazlemere Window Company Ltd sincerely apologises to all its Hertfordshire customers whilst all the product upgrading and showroom expansion is undertaken. However, they are more than welcome to visit Hazlemere’s Buckinghamshire Showroom in High Wycombe, which itself has been recently upgraded and is open 7 days a week. The extensive High Wycombe Showroom is adjacent to Hazlemere’s 38,000 square foot double glazing factory on Cressex Business Park (put HP12 3PR into the Sat Nav). Most of the upstairs office space has been utterly transformed into a windows and doors showroom, enabling customers to see all the different types of doors and windows on display, such as aluminium and UPVC windows, double and triple glazed

windows, secondary glazed windows, casement windows, vertical sliding sash windows and tilt & turn windows. The new modern showroom has been designed to enable customers to be able to open and close the different types of windows and doors for themselves, plus see glass extensions fully decorated and furnished in different lifestyle settings. As well as front and back doors, there will be sliding patio doors, French doors and bi-folding sliding doors on display. During the total refurbishment, the Welwyn Garden City is not open on Saturdays, and whilst it is open 9am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays, customers can meanwhile see all the products on display at Hazlemere’s High Wycombe Showroom, which is only 1/2 a mile from Junction 4 of the M40 Motorway, about 45 minutes from Welwyn via A1M/M25/M40. As soon as the refurbishment is complete, the Welwyn Garden City Showroom will open 10am to 4pm every Saturday. Create Your Pool House Zen

pool area is the perfect place to unwind. From relaxing on a lounger after a hard day’s work, to letting the children play whilst you sit in the spa pool. It offers the whole family some important ‘me time’. Origin, the UK’s original luxury indoor pool company, gives some expert advice on creating the perfect relaxation area in a swimming pool building.

Set the Scene There are a number of ways to create a relaxing environment in a pool house. Install a sound system and play calming spa music throughout the building to truly unwind and detach yourself from the stresses of the day. Lighting creates a perfect ambience. Soft dimmable lighting is perfect for recreating a spa environment or, depending on the mood, LED strip lights change the colour of the room.

Bring the Outdoors In Bi-fold doors create a feeling of luxury. Lay poolside and catch the sun from the privacy of your own home, or even sit indoors and watch the cold of winter pass by with a cup of hot chocolate.

Additional Areas The beauty of a pool house is that you can make the space your own. When creating your build, 8 2 JULY 2 0 1 7

Origin has over 35 years’ experience building award-winning swimming pools. think about what helps you unwind. If you’re a gym bunny, then why not install a space for your very own home gym? If the children love to play in the pool, include a seating area for the adults to relax. Or, even better, consider a bar area where you can perfect your cocktail skills. Another great addition is a sauna or steam room. These add a spot of luxury and are perfect for an adult spa day at home. Many large families also opt for a built-in changing room. Retreat to the pool house for the day with friends and family, and be confident there is room for everyone.

cutting edge design

here are a lot of ‘interiors’ companies out there that use only catalogue cabinetry and furniture. Many of them do it well, but nothing beats the look or practicality of real bespoke cabinetry. Ercan, the craftsman and owner of Cutting Edge Interiors explains: “When someone asks me to provide a storage solution for a particular space I ask them a lot of questions. What are they going to put in it? Do they want it displayed or hidden? Is there any ‘must-have’ feature?” “Most people have a rough idea what they want, however I find the best way to help them visualise the potential, is to show them the concept. I prepare 3D drawings for all my clients regardless of the size of the project. I want people to know exactly what they are getting” Cutting Edge Interiors occasionally works on large commercial projects (they recently built and installed a stunning and enormous stone-effect TV housing in a central London bank). But Ercan, the enthusiastic and talented owner says that his favourite projects are the residential ones where the client is closely involved in the process from design to installation. Their recent projects list consists of several kitchens, walk-in wardrobes, Hi-Fi cabinets and home-office spaces. Cutting Edge Interiors works in a wide variety of materials. Ercan says that modern laminates, realwood veneers and solid wood make up the majority of their work. He also tells us that his company refuses to use anything but the highest quality European hardware for things like door hinges and

drawer runners. “10 years from now when they realise that their bespoke furniture from us looks and works just as good as the day we delivered it they will call us for their next project”. Ercan is especially proud of the high number of referrals he gets from the friends and family of his former clients. “I think it shows that people know I won’t compromise on quality” he says. Ercan’s path into high-end interior design and manufacture started when he was young. His father was an ‘old-school’ furniture maker in London’s East End. Ercan spent years helping his father with interior woodwork and more carpentry projects than he could ever remember. Many years ago his company was actively involved in whole-house renovations - he’s even a city and guilds qualified plumber. But these days he prefers what he describes as the “serenity of bespoke furniture and cabinetry”. If you would like to commission Cutting Edge Interiors for your next interior makeover or just would like some further information please get in touch. We are always happy to help. Back to nature

There’s a whole world of color out there that could transform your home. Gabrielle Fagan talks to leading stylist Hans Blomquist about using everything from woods to weather as decor inspiration

ometimes nature knows best, but who’d have thought it also holds the answers to home decorating? Looking to the skies and the changing colors of the landscape is the newest (and highly welcome) alternative to struggling with perplexing paint charts, and it’s the method used by one of the world’s leading stylists. Hans Blomquist, renowned for his work as an art director with major home brands, including Ikea and Harrods, reveals that looking up to the skies whether sunny blue, stormy or rain-lashed horizons - as well as noticing the seasons, is his perfect inspiration for winning interiors.

“It’s easy to take color for granted. We forget to appreciate the amazing, dazzling world that surrounds us, full of a million different shades that have the power to lift our spirits or soothe our mood,” says Blomquist, whose beautifully illustrated book, In The Mood For Colour: Perfect Palettes For Creative Interiors, is a guide to seeing color in a completely different light. “Nature is my starting point for any project. For my job, I’m lucky enough to travel the world and color surprises me wherever I go - I’m often transfixed by the different colors and lights I’ve experienced in different parts of the globe. Most of my inspiration comes from the colors of the natural world. There is beauty to be found nearly everywhere you go and nature always inspires me with its wonderful color combinations.” The perfect palette is out there just waiting to be seen, he says, and the easiest way of finding out what appeals is to take photos on your phone, of whatever catches your eye, over a period of time. “Next time you leave your house, whether you’re passing through familiar landscapes or visiting a different country, look around and marvel at the variety of colors that surround you. You’ll end up with a collection of pictures which display a wide range of different colors and textures that will be a rich source of inspiration and help you refine your taste.”

“The easiest way of finding out what appeals is to take photos on your phone, of whatever catches your eye” BLUE SKIES & BLUE JEANS Blue’s a color that works especially well when you layer up different shades to create a tone-on-tone effect, and Blomquist promises it will result in a harmonious interior with a sense of depth and calm. “I consider myself a ‘blue’ person. Painting walls a deep blue will give you a sense of summer all year round, and you can add warmth with natural objects and colors,” he enthuses. “Denim blue, greyish blue, duck-egg blue, shades of blue that veer towards green, and anything in between are all favourites of mine. There’s nothing more comfortable to wear than denim, and it’s just as comfortable to live in a moody blue interior. Shades of denim can range from the deepest indigo to the palest, soft grey-blue.” DIP INTO BLUES: Anything goes with deep moody blues - light or dark, muted tones or bright clear, spring-like shades. In an interior, dark blue works as a neutral and looks brilliant either covering walls or used as a grounding accent in the form of textiles and decorative objects. Try layering different shades of blue from darkest navy to washed-out cornflower. 8 8 JULY 2 0 1 7

every other hue sits so well against them, especially the bright green of spring leaves,” he says. “While you may be reluctant to repaint a room pitch black, I’m sure you would be pleasantly surprised if you did, as it’s such a chic, comfortable colour to live with. I wish I had more dark colours in my home. A dark backdrop can have such an impact and create a sense of drama, yet at the same time give a very calm and cocooning feeling. It also makes any other colour stand out beautifully, whether it’s a single flower, a branch of spring blossoms, or a piece of furniture.” DIP INTO GREYS AND BLACKS: If painting a whole room seems too much, start with one wall or ceiling. Create a tonal wall by painting one solid colour of matt paint in a dark colour and then, using a sponge, apply a wash of diluted lighter paint over it. Repeat until you get the desired effect. Choose from deepest indigo, inky black, thunder grey and earthy brown shades. In The Mood For Colour by Hans Blomquist is published by Ryland Peters & Small, priced £16.58. Available on

WASHED, BLEACHED & WEATHERED Natural colour schemes have a depth and softness to them, says Blomquist, and feel so unmanufactured and true in their shades that they’ll always bring a sense of integrity to your home and make it feel warm, inviting and relaxed. “I’m always collecting pieces of wood from the beach and the forest. I use some to light the fire, but the sculptural pieces usually end up on display and inspire me in my choice of colours,” he explains. There’s nothing like the faded colours of smooth driftwood, washed vintage French linen, or antique grey painted furniture. I love everything about these soft, warm tones. I like to mix vintage and new, textural wood playing off shiny porcelain, and if you feel the whole is too bland, introduce some greenery - a single leaf or a pot plant can be the last extra touch needed.” DIP INTO PALE SHADES: If you have plain white walls, add layers of texture and introduce different shades of soft white to make a room more inviting. Layer textiles in different weaves or colours, hang a panel of vintage fabric as a work of art. A collection of vintage mirrors will reflect and accentuate any light in the room and is particularly effective in making a small space appear larger.

STORMY DAYS Towards the end of summer vivid hues begin to fade and moodier colours appear along with dark stormy days and autumnal earthy colours; this is a palette Blomquist recommends for atmospheric rooms. “Even though I don’t like rainy days, I love it when dark, thundery rain clouds roll in because their deep tones are astoundingly beautiful, and 9 0 JULY 2 0 1 7

Beechcroft’s Birch Place Perfectly placed in Berkhamsted.

ith a superb High Street location, the collection of stylish, spacious new homes at Beechcroft’s Birch Place in Berkhamsted have been selling like the proverbial ‘hot cakes.’ Built on the site of the former police station, Birch Place is a gated development designed for the over 55s and featuring a selection of brand new two and three-bedroom homes, many with terraces or balconies. Lift access is provided to all apartments and the development offers private parking. The High Street location is superb, with all Berkhamsted’s shops and services on the doorstep and a new library forming part of the development. On the day of the first sales launch a queue of prospective purchasers waited up to three hours to secure the home of their choice at Birch Place – and all the properties released for sale were ‘snapped up’ immediately. A further three apartments were sold on the day of the second sales launch – and currently only five new homes are available with a further three yet to be released. Mike and Gillian Harding were keen to reserve an apartment on the day of the sales launch and arrived at 8.30 am only to find that people had been queuing from 6.30 am. The Hardings missed out on that occasion but, since then, have been able to buy. “The apartment we chose has three bedrooms and an open-plan living area,” comments Mike. “We aren’t really downsizing because, although we currently live in a three-bedroom detached house, our new apartment is slightly larger. At our present property we have a large garden but we aren’t gardeners and are looking forward to having less maintenance work, including gardening, when we move to Birch Place.” As on all Beechcroft developments, an Estate Manager will be on hand to deal with the day-today administration of the development including the maintenance of the communal areas and the

landscaping. The Manager will also be on hand to offer assistance and advice and to keep an eye on properties whilst owners are away. “The location of Birch Place in the High Street, is fantastic,” adds Mike. “We are both still working. I work part-time locally and my wife works full-time in Barnet and it will be good to be able to enjoy more free time. Having an estate management

service means we will be relieved of many of the pressures and issues related to management and maintenance.” For further details on Birch Place, where three two-bedroom apartments and two threebedroom houses are available, priced from £525,000, please contact the sales team on 01442-870999.
