he Luna Cinema 2016 Summer programme, running from May to October at some of the country’s most beloved venues, from Hatfield House to Blenheim Palace. With eight years of experience in open air cinema, the company has expanded its reach to 150 screenings taking place across the country, from Hertfordshire to Edinburgh.

The work is sensitive in its approach, Keith is truly unique and he has lived in a yurt fairly off grid in Somerset for many years now, foraging for wild food, growing his own veg and practicing yoga! Inspired by his surroundings, local beaches, food, music and then travelling around the South West, Pembrokeshire and Italy for further inspiration. Keith wants the viewer to feel sensitivity, contemplation, peace and stillness from his paintings so that they get a glimpse of the artist behind it. Philip’s adventurous spirit and love for the natural world has led him to painting expeditions like no other; Everest base Camp, 60 feet beneath the surface of shark infested waters, the rainforest of Borneo, deep in the caves and atop the volcanoes of Iceland.

Results Day

W

ith so much depending on exam results these days, it is an anxious time for students and parents as they decide what to do when results are published on the 18th of August.

If results are not as good as expected, going through the UCAS clearing process may be an option but you may have to settle for a less prestigious university or for a course that is not what you have set your heart on. An alternative is to retake some A-level exams and apply to university the following year while gaining some work experience.

In Hertfordshire, St Albans Independent College offers an alternative. Founded in 1988, it has an excellent record

This Summer at Luton Hoo

BBQs, picnics, films under the stars, and garden tours are just some of the summer delights Luton Hoo have in store for guests this year.

Eating good food outdoors with friends and family is one of life’s finest pleasures. With the long awaited summer finally underway Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa will be celebrating the warmer weather by hosting a number of ‘Summer Courtyard BBQs’ in their Country Club every Friday from 1st July to 26th August.

Between 6.30pm and 8.30pm guests will be treated to a two course summer barbecue menu, expertly grilled by Luton Hoo’s renowned team of chefs. All traditional summer favourites will be included, such as Luton Hoo beef burgers and Mediterranean vegetable and halloumi skewers.

Celebrating Luton Hoo’s Capability Brown Landscape

This year sees a national celebration of Capability Brown’s tercentenary and many of his stately gardens and parks are in the spotlight including Luton Hoo. The magnificent parkland and formal gardens at Luton Hoo are the legacy of this great English landscape designer and are now admired and enjoyed by many guests, especially in summer.

Head Gardener, Keith Hersey, has worked on the estate for over 35 years and has seen the gardens and grounds through a massive restoration project when Elite Hotels purchased the estate to open Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa. Keith shares his story with guests at the Garden Tour Ladies Luncheon on Monday 6th June where ladies are greeted with Champagne and canapés on arrival followed by a three course meal with wine finishing with coffee and petits fours. Another opportunity to explore Luton Hoo’s grounds and gardens is on their National Garden Scheme Open Day on Sunday 24th July. This is a rare occasion when the grounds are open to members of the public and Keith and his team will be on hand to answer questions and point you in the direction of stunning features and vistas.

Gallery 1066 recently had the pleasure of welcoming the young and talented iconographer, Jen Allen to Baldock. Filling the gallery with stars, past and present, Jen’s wonderful collection brought our most loved icons to life with a dramatic rainbow of colour amazing her collectors.

Talking us through her process and her painting techniques Jen’s painting demonstration was a highlight of the evening. She offered us great insight into her creative mind and answered our most curious questions about her work.

Impressing us all with her live skill painting, Jen Allen was a pleasure to welcome to the gallery.

BBC Proms 2016: from Boulez to Bowie Friday 15 July – Saturday 10 September

T

he BBC Proms have announced the programme for its 122nd season featuring more than 90 concerts over eight weeks, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. New Proms Director David Pickard introduces an innovative series Proms at... that explores spaces outside the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall. The series matches music to four venues across London with Shakespeareinspired works by Purcell at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe in Southwark, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle at The Chapel, Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the music of Steve Reich at the Bold Tendencies multi-storey car park in Peckham, and the return of the Proms to the Roundhouse in Camden with new work by British composer David Sawer.

Four-hundred years since the death of Shakespeare, the Proms marks the anniversary with a broad survey of music inspired by the Bard, from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet to Hans Abrahamsen’s ‘let me tell you’ and extracts from Kiss Me, Kate.

In the year in which the Olympics are staged in Brazil, the Proms celebrates the music and musicians of Latin America with performances from the São Paulo and Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestras, pianists Martha Argerich and Gabriela Montero, conductors Daniel Barenboim and Gustavo Dudamel, cellist Sol Gabetta, and Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez, who appears at the Last Night of the Proms.

A vital part of the Proms mission remains, bringing classical music to new audiences; youth music-making and youth audiences are a major focus this year. The hugely popular CBeebies Proms return, and there will be two Proms devoted to BBC Music’s Ten Pieces II, part of a ground-breaking nationwide initiative for schools designed to open up the world of classical music to primary and secondary school children.

In the year that we lost two musical pioneers, the Proms pays tribute to Pierre Boulez and David Bowie in two Late Night concerts.

Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sakari Oramo, opens and closes the festival, and in the 50th anniversary year of

his first appearance at the Proms, Bernard Haitink conducts Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with the London Symphony Orchestra in what will be his 88th Prom.

In addition to the six BBC Performing Groups, who are once again central to the festival with a total of 32 performances across the season, the rich wealth of the UK orchestral landscape is on show, including performances from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Hallé, London Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestras, Philharmonia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra and many of the UK’s chamber orchestras and ensembles.

In the spirit of its founding vision to make the best music available to the widest audience, every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and in 2016, BBC Radio 2 and Radio 6 Music each broadcast multiple Proms.

Audiences will be able to watch the Proms on BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, CBBC, CBeebies and BBC iPlayer.

Proms Extra, the Saturday-evening magazine show, returns to BBC Two for its fourth season.

Summer at Cassiobury Farm The Farm is also home to a private collection of exotic wildlife. One of the watercress beds has become home to a flock of Pelicans and Flamingos.

And elsewhere around the Farm you will find Meerkats, Squirrel Monkeys, Capybara, Wallabys, Marmosets, Mara, Artctic Fox, Asian Racoons, Porcupines and Armadillos.

At the centre of the Farm is the Kitchen Garden.

A range of fruit and vegetables, as well as our apple orchard, complement the watercress growing. And our Herb Garden grown 22 different varieties of herbs, making sure there will always be something to add flavour to any recipe.

Providing the perfect backdrop to the site is a 3-acre fishing lake which was stocked in the 1970’s with traditional English carp . . . as well as holding tench, bream, pike and many others. The Farm also has a trout stream and grows and sells Rainbow Trout.

The Farm sits within Cassiobury Park, a 190 acre ancient parkland. It is bordered by the Grand Union Canal on one side and the Gade River on the other, and is a hidden gem of peace and tranquillity.

The Family Open Days are a wonderful day out.

As well as the chance to see all of our rare breed farm and exotic animals and see a working farm, there are taster fishing lessons on the lake, a bouncy castle, face painting, food stalls . . . . even our own crazy golf course to enjoy.

he five year restoration project at Cassiobury Farm & Fishery is reaching fruition and the Farm is throwing open its gates again this year for its summer Family Open Days on the 1st, 6th, 13th, 22nd and 27th of August.

A farm was first recorded on the site in the 1820’s and grew to become one of the largest watercress farms in the country, able to produce some 2 million bags of cress per year. Fed by the crystal clear water of the Gade River and the natural artesian wells bringing spring water through the chalk aquifers, the Farm had the perfect growing conditions for watercress. Sadly the farm stopped production in the 1980’s and the site fell into disrepair. The waterbeds silted up and the site became derelict.

In 2011 the site was renamed Cassiobury Farm & Fishery and a restoration project began, both to restablish watercress farming and to build a rare breed’s agricultural centre on the property.

Today the Farm is a hive of activity. Our Rare Breeds Farm includes Gloucester Old Spot Pigs, Miniature Horses and Donkeys, Soay Sheep, Anglo Nubian Goats, Reindeer, Red & Fallow Deer as well as broad collection of rare breed Turkeys, Chickens, Ducks, Pheasants, Guinea Fowl and more. The Farm sells its own range of venison, lamb and pork, as well as producing its own variety of sausages.

Delhi Durbar at

Knebworth House

f you are visiting Knebworth House this summer, make sure you take the opportunity to see the spectacular painting by Alexander Caddy of the Delhi Durbar before it goes on loan to the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the Bard Graduate Center, New York. The painting will be featured in a forthcoming exhibition ‘J. Lockwood Kipling: Bombay, the Punjab, South Kensington’ ‘Delhi Durbar, Celebration on the Occasion of Queen Victoria becoming Empress of India, 1877’, is in oil on canvas by Alexander E Caddy. It will be on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum from 14 January 2017 until 2 April 2017, and then at the Bard Graduate Center from 15 September 2017 until 4 February 2018.

This painting shows the true colours used in the construction, whereas the 35 foot long painting by Valentine Princep in St James’s Palace gives only an impression of the scene using an imagined colour scheme.

during 1876 – 1880, when Robert Bulwer Lytton was Viceroy of India, and during 1922 – 1927, when his son Victor was Governor of Bengal.

On 1st January 1877 Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India.

The Queen did not attend the Delhi Durbar ceremony in person and in fact never visited India, although she had a lifelong deep affection for the country and its people.

All of the Indian Rulers were present at the Delhi Durbar ceremony. The Viceroy and members of the Council were presented with a heraldic banner to commemorate the occasion. The banner can be seen on display in the British Raj exhibition at Knebworth House.

The Luna Cinema Launches its 2016 Season

T

he Luna Cinema has released its 2016 summer programme, running from May to October at some of the country’s most beloved venues, from Hatfield House to Blenheim Palace. With eight years of experience in open air cinema, the company has expanded its reach to 150 screenings taking place across the country, from Hertfordshire to Edinburgh to Leeds.

For the very first time, The Tower of London has granted permission for outdoor cinema screenings, exclusively to The Luna Cinema – audiences will sit in the moat to catch films including Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Gladiator and Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo+ Juliet. This season will also see the first outdoor screenings of Star Wars as previously the franchise was restricted to indoor venues.

Open air cinema comes to Hertfordshire this summer as The Luna Cinema turns the grand Hatfield House into the ultimate setting for three nights of classic cinema under the stars. Bring a picnic or enjoy the fantastic hot food and full on site bar.

We offer a wide variety of walks, catering for those with a general interest in the history of St Albans, as well as those who have an interest in a specific aspect of the city’s history.

The City and District of St Albans Tour Guides was founded in 1964. Our guides are qualified to either Blue Badge or Green Badge level within the Institute of Tourist Guiding, and all have a comprehensive knowledge of local history and guiding techniques. Walks take place on most weekends throughout the year, and members of the public are welcome to meet the guide at the starting point and pay on the day. Alternatively, tickets for any walk can be purchased from the Tourist Information Office in St Albans.

City Walks start outside the Old Town Hall in St Peters Street, unless otherwise stated, and take approximately an hour and a half. Tickets can be obtained in advance from the Visitor Information Centre in Alban Arena, although it

is possible to turn up on the day of the walk and pay the guide on duty.

The cost is £4 for adults, and £2 for children (5-15). All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Willow Senior Golf Classic

Offers Unique Opportunity for Amateurs

anbury Manor, a Marriott Golf and Country Club in Ware, Hertfordshire, is counting down the days until the 26th August when stars of the European Senior Tour will descend upon its fairways for the Tour’s most unique and newest UK event.

The Willow Senior Golf Classic was added to the 2016 schedule earlier this year, and offers a unique opportunity for amateurs to be part of a recognised tour event. The alliance format of the tournament allows amateurs to play alongside the star studded line-up of players during the main tournament days, 26-28th of August.

Applications are open to all amateurs who wish to enter, and all teams will be drawn, meaning those who play are in with the chance of teeing-up alongside some of the best players on the European Senior Tour.

Entries for the main tournament cost only £4,000 per individual place, and there’s also the chance to play in two pro-am days preceding the Willow Senior Golf Classic at £1,250 per team (three players per team); these will take place from the 24th-25th August.

All proceeds from the Senior Tour Event will go to Willow, the only national charity working with seriously ill young adults aged 16 to 40 to provide uplifting and unforgettable Special Days, enabling them to fulfil lifelong dreams and create treasured memories with loved ones.

Commenting on the event, Willow Life President and co-founder, Bob Wilson says “What an exciting opportunity to play golf alongside celebrities and professional golfers alike and be part of this prestigious Senior Tour. And at the same time raising much needed funds for Willow, enabling us to help many more seriously ill young adults and their loved ones.”

The truth about the Male Menopause

Dear Reader, My neighbour Keith came round the other evening to show me his latest purchase: a Lamborghini. I “oohed” and “aahed” in equal measures as we circled the car like sharks around a poor fish.

“You’ll certainly turn heads in this supercar,” I told him.

“Yeah,” he sighed. “It’s just a pity that the first words out of everybody’s mouths are ‘are you having a mid-life crisis?’”

Although we both laughed, I knew that Keith was a little upset at this. And I can totally understand that. After all, when we think about the female ‘mid-life’, it conjures up images of menopause, hot flushes, night sweats and a generally difficult time for many. Mention the male mid-life stage and what do we get? Humorous comments about mid-life crises, Harley Davidsons and ponytails. Being in the mid-40s myself, I thought this would be a good time to correct a few myths.

Many people don’t believe that the ‘male menopause’ really exists, but it’s a fact of life that in their 40s, most men will have a drop in their testosterone and DHEA hormone levels. The result can be periods of low energy, anxiety, a lack of concentration and difficulty sleeping, not to mention that you might start losing muscle bulk and hair and the dreaded loss of libido… Definitely not funny… (Nor is it funny if you’re a woman who’s living with a man going through this phase....)

The good news is that there’s plenty that you can do about it. ust my usual trim, please,’ is what I’d asked for. Twenty minutes later however, and half my hair was staring back at me from the salon floor! I’ll admit; I cried a bit. W ith some big summer diary dates approaching, I wanted my hair back - and fast.

“Extension Professional’s Clip-Ins were the convincing SOS to my impromptu chop. The creation of hair guru Louise Bailey (basically the David Copperfield of extension wizardry), these aren’t your average clip-ins. Housed in a luxe white ‘hair closet’ box, the clip-ins are applied as two simple parts, rather than lots of fiddly strips: a

double-wefted bottom row for major thickness, and a single-wefted top row to seamlessly disguise where real and faux hair meet. Both wefts are pre-cut so they’re thinner at the ends, which makes them look and ‘behave’ more like real hair. Louise expertly colour matches my hair to the extensions, so that even I can’t tell which is which.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

W

ith a Brit winning Wimbledon for the second time in four years, you might be inspired to dust off your tennis racquet and take them for a quick spin with visions of being Andy Murray. Tennis is a fantastic sport to work out the whole body but it can cause a painful elbow or injuries to the shoulder and knees due to the forces exerted when you slam down your winning point.

Dr Ade Adejuwon, consultant in sports and exercise medicine at Spire Harpenden Hospital gives advice for taking care of your elbow while playing racquet sports this year: “Lateral elbow tendinopathy, otherwise known as tennis elbow, is the most common cause of pain on the outside of the elbow. Although it can occur in up to 50% of recreational tennis players, which is where it gets its name from, it can just as well affect individuals from all walks of life who perform activities that require repetitive lifting from the elbow and/or gripping e.g. recreational (gym) or occupational (builders, carpenters) weight-lifters.

Tennis elbow pain typically comes on gradually, although occasionally the individual may recall a specific mechanism of injury. Although the pathology is at the elbow the pain can radiate down the outer aspect of the forearm causing a weakness of grip strength that can make it difficult to hold a racquet, pick up objects, or if bad enough give a firm handshake.

It is important to note that there are other causes for lateral elbow pain such as elbow osteoarthritis, entrapment of nerves around the elbow, or referred pain from wear and tear in the neck so it is crucial that the correct diagnosis is made as it can obviously affect how the patient is managed.

Presently there is no one treatment for tennis elbow and a multimodal approach is usually recommended.

Self-management through activity modification, applying topical anti-inflammatory, using a wrist splint or forearm counterforce strap may be enough to control symptoms.

Exercises and stretches as prescribed by a physical therapist is the main form of treatment but if unresponsive there are some novel treatments like shockwave treatment or platelet-rich-plasma injections (also known as PRP) that have been shown to be effective. A small group of patients may go on to surgery if all else fails.

Dr Adejuwon’s advice for playing with tennis elbow: • Regularly check the strap on your racquet grip – a lot of injuries can be caused by gripping the racquet too hard because the grip has worn thin.

• Wearing a “tennis elbow splint” during games can help support the tendons and ease the pain • Applying a topical anti-inflammatory gel or taking oral anti-inflammatories , if there are contra-indications, can ease any discomfort after exercise.

• If you are suffering with your elbow visit a physiotherapist or osteopath, as they can provide exercises to help ease the pain.

• If you are still struggling, you can visit a consultant in sports and exercise medicine, like myself, or an upper limb specialist. Treatment options include shockwave therapy and PRP injections – although no one treatment works for all, so treatment would be tailored to you.

Ways to avoid developing tennis elbow include regular stretching and strengthening of the forearm muscles. Also aim to strengthen the muscles of the arm, shoulder, and upper back so that they take some of the load off the forearm muscles. Use equipment appropriate for your size and ability: in tennis check your racquet grip is not worn or loose.”

Why Homeowners are Warming to

Solid Roof Conservatories M any UK homeowners can be exasperated by badly designed and specified existing conservatories, complaining they are simply too hot in summer and too cold in winter.

It is therefore important that if a double glazed glass conservatory is what is required, that it is expertly designed and installed by well-established conservatory experts so it can be used all year round thanks to heat reflective glass, an insulated base, a roof vent to release any heat build-up, plenty of ventilation and a high double glazing specification to keep the cold out and warmth in.

The alternative to a glass or polycarbonate roof, is an “insulated warm roof �, better known as solid roofs with tiles. There is the traditional full blown extension option

with either a flat roof or a timber pitched roof with heavy slate roof tiles, or nowadays there is a lightweight, yet incredibly robust aluminium solid roof option that offers even better insulation than traditional roofs, plus a choice of attractive lightweight tiles in both aluminium and UPVC (the latter are more expensive, but aesthetically look like traditional slate tiles).

Just like double glazed glass roofs, solid roofs can be installed on conservatories in a matter of days. By opting for a solid roof, rather than a standard glass one, you will improve thermal and acoustic insulation. However, you do lose the natural daylight afforded by glass roofs, whilst gaining a structure that is more akin to an extension, hence why solid roof conservatories fall under the England and

assuming a) the P.D. rights have not been withdrawn, and/ or b) there are sufficient P.D. rights left to build the solid roof conservatory to the size you’d like it to be. If your dwelling is a “new build” developers sometimes place

If you do choose a solid roof instead of a double glazed one, you will possibly need Planning Permission Wales Building Regulations. Both aluminium tiled and UPVC tiled solid roofs can be built in many conservatory styles including: Edwardian, Victorian, Lean-To or Bespoke conservatories to name but a few.

The whole point of buying any modern conservatory is that you should be able to use it as and when you like.

It can be incredibly annoying if it was not designed for 24/7 use, and thanks to not having enough ventilation, an insulated base or heat reflective glass, or is cold during the winter as the double glazing fitted was not of a sufficiently high specification. A solid “warm” roof offers even better roof insulation, primarily because it contains insulated plywood and rigid insulation board.

Any loss of natural sunlight as a consequence of opting for a Warm Roof can be off-set by the inclusion of one or more double glazed Velux style roof windows. These sloping roof windows keep you in close contact with the outside and afford views of the sky above. They will also help ventilate the space which you will be particularly thankful for on hot summer days.

If you already have a conservatory that is nowhere near as comfortable as you want it to be, then in all likelihood you’ll need to replace the entire structure (apart from the base and any walls) with one that has a Warm Roof or high specification double glazed roof, windows and doors.

If you do choose a solid roof instead of a double glazed one, you will possibly need Planning Permission, so make sure you check what permissions you are legally obligated to obtain (and how much they each will cost) before ordering a solid roof conservatory.

If building a new solid roof conservatory onto a new foundation, you may not need planning if you are adding a warm roof structure under Permitted Development Rights,

restrictions on them, so you would be wise to check your particular situation out.

Solid Roof Conservatories are in the eyes of the law an extension, so Building Regulations Approval is required, whether you are building a new one, or having a glass roof replaced with a solid one. In the latter case, if your conservatory was built under planning permission, you will need to re-apply for planning, as you are changing from an exempt structure (i.e. a conservatory with a glass roof) to a non-exempt extension.
