HENRY MOORE: Drawing in the Dark
The largest collection of Henry Moore’s coalmining drawings ever exhibited, at St Albans Museum + Gallery
The largest exhibition of coalmining drawings by celebrated artist, Henry Moore, will be shown this winter and spring at St Albans Museum + Galleryeighty years since they were completed for the War Artists’ Advisory Committee (WAAC).
Moore is famous for his sculpture, particularly of women and abstract forms, and his drawings of Londoners sheltering from the blitz in 1940 are also well known. But it is often forgotten that Moore was the son of a miner from Castleford in Yorkshire, and as a war artist he developed a detailed series of drawings from sketches he made in 1942 at Wheldale Colliery where his father had worked. Moore spent one week in the mine drawing from observation and then worked from memory to create the remaining drawings, which were all completed within six months.
Curated by University of Hertfordshire Arts + Culture and played out within the theatre of the dark-walled, subterranean Weston Gallery of St Albans Museum + Gallery, the timely exhibition takes inspiration from the new book, Drawing in the Dark by art historian, Chris Owen.
Inna Allen, Head of University of Hertfordshire Arts + Culture, says:
“This discrete body of work, consisting of
over 100 drawings will be showcased alongside sculptures and other works-on-paper. Visitors are invited to journey from quick pencil sketches, through developmental drawings, finished pieces and finally to later works inspired by Moore’s coalmining experience. Drawings from the four coalmining sketchbooks will be represented to demonstrate a range of techniques including pencil, ink and wax.”
The drawings not only demonstrate the backbreaking labour which nearly 3/4 million miners endured daily, as they made their vital contribution to Britain’s war effort, but they also reveal new insights into Moore’s life and artistic process. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see the leading British Modernist sculptor afresh, through drawings, notes and a rare choice of subject matter.
Annabel Lucas, Audience Development Manager at St Albans Museums, says:
“It is thrilling to bring such a remarkable collection of drawings and sculptures by Henry Moore to St Albans. We are delighted to unite so many of the coalmining drawings to appreciate their intensity and poignancy, and to reflect on their significance within Moore’s wider oeuvre. Through the pages and pages of development sketchbook drawings, the exhibition offers us new insight into the working practices of Britain’s greatest modern artist and invites us to look afresh at Moore as a sculptor.”
The new book, ‘Drawing in the Dark: Henry Moore’s Coalmining Commission’, published by Lund Humphries, explores every aspect of the WAAC’s commission; from Moore’s return to his childhood home and the challenges associated with ‘drawing in the dark’ to the significant influence of the project on Moore’s later work, including the Warrior and Helmet Head sculptures, and his little-known illustrations to W.H. Auden’s poetry. It features previously unpublished imagery from the Henry Moore Foundation’s archives and its launch will coincide with the exhibition.
Chris Owen, author of ‘Drawing in the Dark’ and former head of Cambridge School of Art at Anglia Ruskin University, says:

its funding support to the many lenders involved including the Henry Moore Foundation, the Henry Moore family, the British Museum and the National Coalmining Museum.”
Together, the exhibition and book aim to reveal the importance of this very personal project for understanding Moore’s life and work. Whether you’re new to Moore, a lifelong fan or take an interest in coalmining and World War II, this exhibition offers discovery, excitement and contemplation.
“It is hard to imagine what it must be like, to ‘draw in the dark’, as Henry Moore did in a Yorkshire coal mine for a week in 1942. Representing miners emerging from the dusty darkness was a real challenge. And add to that, the physical discomfort of working 1400 feet underground in conditions which Moore himself described as ‘like hell’. This exhibition will reveal how Moore tackled these difficulties. The resulting drawings are both powerful and haunting.”
Sebastiano Barassi, Head of Henry Moore Collections & Programmes at Henry Moore Foundation, says:
“The Henry Moore Foundation is delighted to support this comprehensive and long-overdue presentation of Henry Moore’s coalmining drawings. These powerful images of ‘Britain’s Underground Army’ at work express some of Moore’s deepest creative concerns. As a subject, the coalmine allowed him to indulge his fascination with black and darkness while creating images with the subtlest colourist qualities. With their rare focus on the male body and the figure in action, the coalmining drawings represent one of the highest expressions of Moore’s sympathetic gaze on humanity. As he himself reminded us, ‘without the war … I think I would have been a far less sensitive and responsible person if I had ignored all that and went on working just as’…”
Councillor Allison Wren, Vice-chair of the public realm committee of St Albans City and District Council and lead councillor for museums says:
“We are delighted to be the first gallery in the UK to focus specifically on these remarkable drawings. It is a fantastic collaboration, and we are extremely grateful to Arts Council England for

75 years of Porsche
The first vehicle to bear the Porsche name was registered on June 8, 1948: It was the 356 “No.1” Roadster. This is the day on which the Porsche brand was born. And purchased by a woman called Jolanda Tschudi, of Switzerland .
The Type 356 turned Ferry Porsche’s dream of a sports car into a reality. “His vision at that time embodied all of the values that still define the brand to this day”, said Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “Tradition is a commitment. Without our tradition and without our core values, we would not be where we are today”, explained Blume. “We have the solid technological expertise, creative employees and unique team spirit. We have what it takes to ensure that the Porsche brand continues to fascinate.”
The successor model to the 356, the Porsche 911 designed by Ferry Porsche’s son Ferdinand Alexander, finally gave the company its breakthrough as one of the leading manufacturers of sports cars in the world, both from a technical and a design perspective.
The Porsche 911, presented to the global public for the first time in 1963, has now been built over a million times. “Although the 911 has been consistently developed in the intervening decades and enhanced many times over with new,

innovative technologies, no other vehicle has managed to retain its original essence in the same way as the 911”, says Blume. “As the centrepiece of the brand, the 911 has become the sports car of dreams, winning the collective heart of enthusiasts all over the world.”
In 1966 presented as the ‘Safety Cabriolet’, the Porsche 911 Targa was launched. And the following year the Porsche 911 R was built for use in motorsport. Weighing 800 kg, it had a 6-cylinder, naturally-aspirated and horizontallyopposed engine producing 154 kW (210 PS), making it incredibly fast.

In 1972 The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 was launched as the sporty leading model of the 911 range. And in 1975 at the height of the oil crisis, Porsche presented the first 911 Turbo – the world’s first production sports car with exhaust turbocharger and pressure regulator. And in 1977 conceived as the successor to the 911, the Porsche 928 broke new ground in terms of technology and design. It was powered by a light-metal alloy V8 engine.
The one millionth Porsche rolled off the assembly line on 15th July 1996. And to leave the 20th century in style the 911 series was rounded off with an exceptional sporty version, the 911 GT3.
Celebrating the new millennium, Porsche displayed its high-performance Carrera GT sports car at the Louvre in Paris and in 2002, presented its third car line: the sporty, off-road Cayenne SUV. Series production of the Carrera GT commenced in 2003 and by 2006, 1,270 units of the fast (up to 330 km/h) high-performance sports car had been built.
At the Geneva Motor Show 2010, Porsche presented the 918 Spyder high-performance hybrid as a concept study for the 21st century sports car. de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra observe INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
To mark International Women’s Day this March, the University of Hertfordshire’s resident orchestra, the de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra (dHPO) will be performing a concert by composers who fought for recognition and who stood firm in their beliefs against adversity.
The theme of International Women’s Day this year is #Embraceequity - to create a fair and equal world. To honour the struggles of women and to acknowledge those who fought for an egalitarian society, the dHPO will be performing works by notable female composers Dame Ethyl Smyth and Ruth Gipps alongside work by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Inna Allen, Acting Head of UH Arts + Culture, says:
“International Women’s Day on 8th March 2023 is a global day recognising the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. We are delighted to celebrate the accomplishments of Dame Ethyl Smyth and Ruth Gipps who were both marginalised as ‘female composers’ and had to fight to be accepted as mainstream in a maledominated musical world.
“Shostakovich will also be celebrated as a Soviet-era composer and pianist who had a complex relationship with the government due to his political opinions. The composer’s politics influenced his music, and he was continually under government scrutiny.
“The dHPO is delighted to perform works by these significant musical figures of the 19th and 20th Century who all had strength in their beliefs for equality despite facing opposition.”
The concert begins with The Wreckers (Overture) by Dame Ethyl Smyth who was a suffragette as well as a composer and whose operatic work tells the story of ships plundered when lured onto the rocks of the Cornish Coast. This dramatic overture is a perfect encapsulation of the exciting story to come.
Ruth Gipps studied at the Royal College of Music with Vaughan Williams and Gordon

Jacob, composing in a romantic style. She fought discrimination against women, by which her early career was affected. Gipps’ Horn Concerto, written for her son Lance Baker, is played by soloist Annemarie Federle, the brass category finalist in the BBC Young Musician 2020.
Dmitri Shostakovich’s wonderful Fifth Symphony concludes the concert and despite being a creative response to criticism, gained an unprecedented triumph, with the music appealing equally to both the public and official critics with its 1937 premiere receiving an ovation lasting over half an hour.
The dHPO orchestra has enjoyed over 50 years of success and brings together over 80 classical musicians who perform a wide musical repertoire under the leadership of their dynamic conductor, Robin Browning.

STEM Innovation in School
By Simon Winchester, Academic Director at St Margaret’s School in Hertfordshire
From LEGO play to building kit cars, STEM is evolving in schools today and the future is both exciting and challenging. Of the 788,125 A-level grades, which students received this summer, STEM subjects enjoyed an extraordinary dominance at the top of the charts for A-level uptake. Maths holds the crown at 89,605 A-level entries, with only Psychology pipping Biology and Chemistry to the number two spot, proving the growing popularity of STEM subjects today.
Yet in a fast-moving technological landscape, employers are increasingly looking for students who can approach STEM as more than simply an exercise in repeating ‘parrot-fashion’ what they learned for the exam. The very term STEM suggests something that is more than the sum of its parts – an appreciation of how pupils can apply their learning to the real world, with all of the complexity that real world problem solving requires.
Take LEGO as an example, arguably nothing embodies real world problem solving better than LEGO. Lego enables pupils to design, think, solve and be creative in a group challenge or team setting, reflecting the real world of work. LEGO allows students to model a real-world system and set of controls, giving them the chance to understand and visualise the connection between a theoretical concept and its practical application.
This is perhaps why it is becoming so popular in schools today.
Likewise, building anything requires students to process a design which is presented to them and to apply this logically to the engineering and construction of a product. A car is a perfect example of this because it is subject to the laws of physics, the economics of mathematics, it must suit the ergonomics of biology, it must be engineered to last and requires technological skill and understanding to come together. This is perhaps why more and more schools are incorporating the building of kit cars into their STEM offering. Most importantly, for students to work on a kit car successfully, it requires them to design, work as a team, model, communicate, build, problem solve and test products and solutions – building the vital inter-personal and collaborative skills which the STEM industry is crying out for.
As STEM continues to evolve, we should expect to see schools pushing the boundaries for future STEM-related activities. Each generation arriving in secondary schools will do so with a more advanced digital skillset, having grown up in such a rapidly changing technological landscape. The appetite for challenge among pupils in this arena is exciting and gives the pupils themselves real scope to challenge the boundaries of STEM.

ROTHAMSTED MANOR, HARPENDEN
The Rothamsted Estate in Harpenden, Hertfordshire is home to Rothamsted Manor. A beautiful Grade 1 listed building that has recently been reopened as a venue. The first record of the Rothamsted estate was made in 1212 when it was owned by Henry Gubion. It was bought in 1623 by Anne Wittewronge - the widow of Jacob Wittewronge - on behalf of her son John, who was then 4 years old. John became Lord of the Manor of Rothamsted in 1639 and the estate continued to be passed through the family until John Bennet Lawes (founder of Rothamsted Experimental Station, now Rothamsted Research) was born in the house on 28th December 1814. Sir John Bennet Lawes and Sir Henry Gilbert together developed a fundamental understanding of plant nutrition and produced the world’s first commercial chemical fertilizers. The house, whilst used predominantly as a family home since records began, was requisitioned for the use of the military in WWII and became a listening post, recording and feeding messages to Bletchley Park for decoding. After the war it was converted into accommodation for staff and visitors to Rothamsted until 2020, when the ground floor was opened as a venue for the community, where guests can enjoy afternoon teas, murder mystery evenings, or book the venue for a private function. Filled with impressive features that have remained largely untouched since the 1600s, the Manor will impress guests and provide plenty of inspiration for any event. The external gardens are taken care of by the onsite grounds team and are currently being prepared for another summer season. The Chef and his team have been creating some wonderful new menus with local suppliers, to create a truly unique experience. Brands stocked include Condici, Ispirato, Veni Infantino and Couture Club. Less formalwear from Frank Lyman, Alison and Lewis Henry is also ideal for a day at the races, wedding abroad or guests and cruising.
Mothers usually purchase their outfits four to six months when everything gels and you have that wow factor. It is usual for the mothers to co-ordinate with the wedding party. Many brides have a colour scheme and it is a good idea to either blend or contrast with this. It is very important to be comfortable with what you are wearing. A
shift dress with a jacket is always a popular choice because the jacket can be taken off later. Elegant and slightly understated always works and a hat should complement the outfit. Whilst the outfit must be perfect for the occasion it is important to have the correct lingerie underneath which can alter the whole look of a garment. Cream has a well stocked lingerie department which can be tried on with the outfit. A free alteration service is available on all full priced outfits bought in store, a fitting being carried out one month before the event. Shoes and bags are made in Spain in different heel heights and beautiful leathers. These are made to order if not available in stock.

Kate’s most Googled fashion moments of 2022
With royal tours and plenty of engagements in the diary, the Princess of Wales had a busy 2022 – and her wardrobe was more than up to the challenge.
From colourful outfits and vintage-inspired looks to sombre black mourning outfits, Kate’s fashion has been characteristically polished throughout the year.
But which outfits piqued our interest the most? There were particular days of the year we turned to Google to find out more about what Kate was
wearing. These are the top days – and corresponding outfits – we were looking up Kate’s fashion.
FOR THE QUEEN’S FUNERAL
For the sombre occasion of the Queen’s funeral in September, Kate wore a black Alexander McQueen coat dress with a wide-brimmed hat and veil. Pearls are traditionally worn by the royals in mourning, and Kate accessorised her look with the late Queen’s Japanese pearl choker necklace –which she also wore to Prince Philip’s funeral the previous year.

FOR JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS
Kate wheeled out a series of enviable outfits for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June, and the outfit that had people rushing to Google was the pastel yellow Emilia Wickstead outfit, worn to a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral. The elegant midi dress featured wrap detailing underneath the bust and was teamed with a matching hat by Philip Treacy and the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings –which were given to the late Queen as a wedding present by the Hakim of Bahrain in 1947.
AT A SERVICE FOR THE QUEEN
Ahead of the Queen’s funeral, Kate attended a service for the late monarch in Westminster Hall. She kept her outfit simple – a black Catherine Walker coat dress, worn with a pearl and diamond brooch.
AT THE PLATINUM JUBILEE PAGEANT
Kate continued her run of colourful Jubilee outfits for the pageant, choosing a raspberry Stella McCartney to watch the show. The cut of the dress was quite demure – with long puff sleeves, a high neck and midi length, but the bright colour made it feel a lot more fun. While fans went wild for her outfit, she was almost outshone by fouryear-old Prince Louis – who struggled to sit still during the two-hour pageant.
AT A CHARITY POLO MATCH
Proving a midi dress is always her go-to, the day after the pageant Kate stepped out in a white version to watch the Prince of Wales play in a charity polo match. She turned to one of her favourite designers, Emilia Wickstead, for the occasion, and looked elegant in the simple white dress with black piping.
LEAVING THE BAHAMAS
Kate switched up her style for the royal tour around the Caribbean in March – while she packed some failsafe midi dresses and suits for the trip, she was also a bit more experimental with vintage finds and unusual colours. The most searched-for outfit from the trip was the yellow Alessandra Rich dress she wore leaving The Bahamas. With puff sleeves, peplum detailing and a bow on the front, the vibe was distinctly Eightiesinspired – and quite different to the silhouettes we’re used to seeing Kate in. While most of Kate’s outfits tend to sell out immediately, this one is still available to buy – and has been reduced from £1,690 to £1,014 on Net-A-Porter.
AT CARDIFF CASTLE
We can only imagine how many coat dresses Kate has in her wardrobe – this was one of the most popular of the year, a red version by Eponine London (which she first wore back in 2021). Kate donned the outfit for a Jubilee visit to Cardiff Castle – and as red is the colour of Wales, we can’t imagine her choice was an accident.
AT WIMBLEDON
As a patron of the All England Club, Kate is a familiar face at Wimbledon – and this year she took Prince George to the Royal Box for the first time, to watch the men’s singles final between Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios. Kate kept things light and summery in a navy blue polka dot dress by Alessandra Rich, with the cut reminiscent of the yellow dress she wore by the same designer in The Bahamas.

Queen of punk Dame Vivienne Westwood’s fashion legacy
By Prudence Wade.
Few individuals disrupted fashion quite like Dame Vivienne Westwood, who has died aged 81.
Known for her counterculture aesthetic and commitment to the environment, fashion wouldn’t be where it is today without Westwood carving her unique path.
She continued working until the end of her life, with the announcement on her Instagram page reading: “Vivienne continued to do the things she loved, up until the last moment, designing, working on her art, writing her book, and changing the world for the better. She led an amazing life. Her innovation and impact over the last 60 years has been immense and will continue into the future.”
Tributes have already started pouring in from the world of fashion, music and beyond, with Chrissie Hynde – lead singer of the Pretenders – tweeting: “Vivienne is gone and the world is already a less interesting place.”
Westwood certainly made the world a more interesting place throughout her career – these are some of the major ways she broke boundaries…
She brought a punk aesthetic to high fashion
With her provocative and boundary-pushing designs, Westwood helped set the fashion tone for the punk movement in the 1970s.
She opened a shop with her then-partner Malcolm McLaren on the King’s Road in 1971 –later called SEX – which was frequented by some of the biggest names in punk – including the Sex Pistols, who McLaren managed.
During this time, Westwood’s designs set the tone for punk fashion – think ripped T-shirts, lots of safety pin embellishments and tartan accents. Westwood often used anti-establishment iconography in her clothes – particularly subverting traditional images of the monarchy.
In 1998 she told The Independent: “I was a punk before it got its name. I had that hairstyle and purple lipstick. Girls stopped me in the street and said, ‘Look at the state of that’.”
She made the environment a central focus
The climate crisis might be top of the agenda now, with brands like Stella McCartney using eco-friendly materials and emphasising the need for sustainability in fashion.
But when Westwood started talking about sustainability way back in Eighties, she was seen as something of an outlier. She used traditional tailoring from Savile Row and put great importance on how garments were made –
66 JANUARY 2023 FASHION & BEAUTY
The late great designer championed punk fashion and was committed to environmental sustainability.
considering the supply chain long before many other major players did.
Her work was always political, and she made her explicit focus the environment in the Noughties. In 2012, Westwood appeared on the catwalk during London Fashion Week in a T-shirt saying ‘climate revolution’, and in 2015 she drove a tank near former prime minister David Cameron’s home to protest fracking.
Some have struggled with Westwood’s message to ‘buy less’, while she still produced multiple new collections a year. However, this was something she was conscious of, with the Vivienne Westwood website reading: “We know there is a contradiction between our activism and the industry we are part of. Fashion creates products which are too often disposable, and which – through their creation, distribution and eventual disposal – can have a disproportionately negative impact on our planet, its wildlife and people.
“We know this and we know we must do better. We have been adapting the way we make our clothes and accessories over the last few years to reflect the growing urgency to change how the industry operates but, in this time of climate crisis, we must go further.”
Westwood continued to post on her blog (climaterevolution.co.uk) up until her death – in November she praised the young activists who threw soup on Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers painting, writing: “Young people are desperate. They’re wearing a T-shirt that says: Just Stop Oil. They’re doing something.”
She championed androgyny in fashion
Over the past few years, androgyny has become big business in fashion – championed by the likes of Brad Pitt, who wore a skirt on the red carpet in August.
This arguably wouldn’t have happened without Westwood. From the beginning of her career, she’s pushed the boundaries of gender in fashion, putting men in skirts and women in sharp tailoring.
One clip that’s been going viral on social media since Westwood’s death shows an extremely awkward TV interview when she was introducing her autumn/winter 1988-89 collection, called Time Machine. Westwood had male models wearing pearls, and the interviewer asked – to the giggles of the audience – “Tell me about the twinset and pearls for men, has it caught on? I have not seen a
lot of men wearing twinsets and pearls.”
Westwood replied: “You might see your bank manager in five years wearing that” – proving she was far ahead of her time. The audience may have been laughing at Westwood’s designs at the time, but her prediction eventually came true – a string of pearls is current fashion icon Harry Styles’ signature look.
She constantly subverted expectations Westwood’s fashion was meant to challenge and subvert expectations. She first introduced corsetry into her designs in the 1970s, and it remained her signature style in the decades that followed.
With corsets, Westwood was one of the first designers to experiment with the ‘underwear as outerwear’ trend (one that is still in fashion today), and she used them to make a strong statement for female empowerment and liberation – challenging their original meaning of restriction.
As American designer Marc Jacobs said in his tribute to Westwood: “You did it first. Always. Incredible style with brilliant and meaningful substance.”

Grant and Glass Opticians
Grant and Glass Opticians first began as Glass Opticians as a home practice by Shelagh Glass when her children were very young. Shelagh and Richard formed a partnership with Robin Grant and by the 1990’s the current practice in Radlett opened on the high street. Over the years, Grant and Glass Opticians had practices in Bedfordshire, North London and Hertfordshire. Grant and Glass Radlett has expanded from a single corner practice on Watling Street to a double premises with two testing rooms with room for expansion.
We are a friendly independent run practice with an experienced professional team of Optometrists, Contact lens Opticians and Dispensing Opticians led by Richard Glass. We have a dedicated team of admin staff who support the needs of the practice. We pride ourselves in the high standards of service we provide.
We have always invested in the highest quality and best technology diagnostic equipment. We were one of the first practices in the UK to have the Monoco combined Optomap imaging and OCT scanners. These scans and images help diagnose early signs of many diseases and are
digitally stored on patient records to allow us to be able to compare subtle changes from year on year. We have a great rapport with many specialist Ophthalmologists locally and London based within the NHS and private sector with whom we are able to share the scans/images with directly should there be a need for further investigation.
In 2020, we invested in the latest technology from Rodenstock, the new DNeye scanner which measures the biometric individual anatomy of your eyes. This also includes other vital information of your eyes, including advanced pressures, curvature of the front surface of your eye, interior angles and pupil diameters. The biometric measurement values together with the eye examination results can be integrated into your lenses making them more bespoke than ever. In doing so, patients receive the most individual Rodenstock lenses thus getting the sharpest vision at all times whether day or night. The biometric intelligent spectacle lenses can be made up in a variety of options.
All of our private enhanced eye examinations include the Optomap imaging, OCT scans and DNeye scanner which give the Optometrist a better insight to your eyes. We do offer standard NHS eye tests which are free under NHS scheme if you are eligible, these appointments can also have the supplementary scans added on.
Some of the additional services we provide include Behavioural Vision Therapy (BVT) and Myopia Control (Short sightedness). BVT helps to develop and improve the visual system. Short sightedness (Myopia) is more common now in children than ever, with Myopia Control we can slow down the rate of change which results in lower prescriptions in later life. If your child shows signs of developing high myopia at their eye examination, our Optometrists and Opticians will discuss the options with you. Myopia control

3 signs you’re drinking too much water
We’re often told to drink eight glasses of water a day –but this might not actually be the magic number.
Research from the University of Aberdeen published this week suggests the recommended intake of two litres of water a day doesn’t actually match our actual needs – and in many situations is too high.
Given around half of our daily intake of water comes from food, scientists estimate we only really need around 1.5 to 1.8 litres per day.
That doesn’t mean you should stop hydrating entirely. “Our bodies need water for a whole host of essential functions,” says Dr Bryony Henderson, lead GP from online health service, Livi (livi.co.uk).
“Water carries nutrients to the cells and transports the waste away, and it cushions and lubricates the brain and the joints. Through perspiration, it also helps to regulate the body’s temperature.”
Being dehydrated – when the body loses more water than it takes in – “Can have an impact on almost every part of our body”, suggests Henderson. “Even mild dehydration can affect our ability to concentrate. It can lead to headaches, extreme tiredness and constipation.”
So how can you know when you need water? “Thirst is the best rule of thumb symptom in day-to-day life,” says Henderson. “However, by the time you feel thirsty, you might already be dehydrated.”
She recommends eating fruit and veg rich with water, and having easy access to a water bottle – especially if you are someone “who frequently exercises, particularly in hot weather, or who commonly worries about not drinking enough water”. See your GP if you have any concerns or queries.
It’s clear we need water to function – but how can you tell if you’re drinking too much?
1. Urinating more, but not actually getting rid of all the water
“Increased water intake means you’re drinking too much water for your kidneys to process through urinating, which can cause water buildup in your bloodstream,” explains Henderson. This might mean
you’re not flushing out unwanted waste products, causing you to feel unwell.
2. Water retention
If you feel puffy – as though your skin is highly reactive – or feel as though you are gaining weight rapidly, you may be retaining water. “Retaining water occurs when your body physically can’t get rid of the water, which can be a result of major health conditions. Both are equally as dangerous, as it disturbs the balance between the sodium and water in your blood,” Henderson says.
3. Low salt levels
Drinking too much H20 “can cause water intoxication, which is when your salt levels and your electrolyte levels become too diluted”, explains Henderson. Not having enough salt in the body can lead to nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness and irritability. “If untreated, [water intoxication] can lead to a condition called ‘hyponatremia’, which means your salt or sodium levels have become dangerously low. If these levels drop too low at a rapid pace, it can be dangerous, and in rare cases cause death.”

AN ODE TO CURVES
Tstraight lines and angles gradually edged out in favour of the round. In the home, curves are calming, they imply comfort, softness and safety – no objects threatening to bash shins or cause dents here.
PLAY TIME
Now roundness has really kicked off, the newest designer pieces showcasing exaggerated, extravagant, expressive curves that go over-thetop with size, scale or configuration. While in more traditional shapes this may be too imposing or impactful for indoors, without angles the new forms are childlike and friendly – often with a dash of the cheeky or whimsical.
AU NATUREL
These designs also hint at the organic, many of the shapes appearing gently smoothed over time, or obviously sculpted by human hands. While perfect circles, discs and spheres still play a part in the contemporary interior, they’re supported by forms that are imperfect, tying in with our ongoing love affair with nature and bringing the outdoor in to create an inherently relaxing mood.
PRODUCT PICKS
Round and round
Is it a piece of art, or something practical? The Stami daybed by Milanese designers Studiopepe for Gallotti & Radice is all about curves, its straight lines almost invisible. A tale of two halves, its lower frame – if it can really be called that – is composed of impossibly delicate slices of black stained ash, which seem to loop and grow around the cushions above, flawlessly providing levelled support while making its own visual impression. The upholstered upper section is so sleek it looks naturally formed, the oval and cylindrical leather cushions impossibly smooth like something made in the digital world rather than reality. Supersized
Made up of just two substantial segments, the seat of Lema’s Claire armchair by Norm Architects nods strongly to nature, combining epic upholstered forms with a slick, minimal frame. The two cushion sections are rounded like a pair of pebbles eroded by time and slowly drawn together, their exaggerated size and quiet-yet-monumental curves at once indulgent and humble, emanating warmth and serenity.

Charismatic contours
Making an impression with its wing-like double backrest, finding strict linearity on the Aldora Sofa by Cristina Celestino for Moooi is like playing a long game of hide and seek. Its impressive backrest inspired by the arcing lines of Calla Lilies and prompting visions of pretty flying insects, the flowing flamboyant form is both somewhere to get comfortable on as well as an upholstered sculpture, bestowing joy and character on the room with its presence alone.

Perfect imperfection
Combining the organic with geometric precision, the Maxim Argile dining table by Pio and Tito Toso for Cattelan Italia melds a perfectly rounded, touch-me-smooth table top with a trio of alluring concave legs. Expertly crafted from liquid cement which is poured into a mould in the same way a sculpture is produced, when solidified the material has a gentle, tactile finish. The simple, oversized shapes imbue the design with a natural feel, its base akin to mysteriously enlarged petals or leaves creating a subtle yet striking statement.

TREND ALERT: Terracotta Style Tile
The terracotta-style tile, simple and organic, yet with so many styling options!
As home owners embrace a more nostalgic, soulful interior, natural and traditional style finishes are once again in demand. One such product is the wonderfully organic terracotta-style tile. Available in a number of sizes and colours, its unmistakable rustic charm can grace so many interior styles. From a humble country cottage, a grander country house, to a more modern rustic interior and in each setting it is guaranteed to anchor the room scheme with a natural rustic warmth and character.
When you talk about terracotta, one thinks of handmade tiles moulded from simple clay, showing rustic imperfections and a lot of natural charm. These artisan tiles have graced our homes for centuries, but to retain their beauty they require a lot of maintenance, in the form of sealing.
The humble terracotta tile is very porous, as a result it can stain easily and once a stain gets into the body of the tile it is almost impossible to remove it, hence the importance of sealing the tile to give protection. Due to the body of the tile being so absorbent, this will also limit its use to the interior of our British homes, as once moisture penetrates the body of the tile, frost can split itoh to have a Mediterranean climate!
Fortunately there is a now a new type of terracotta-style tile, a tile that require no maintenance, as the body of the tile is non-porous.
Baked Tiles have been sourcing the globe to find the very best of this style of product and whilst they no longer require laborious treatments, they
don’t lack any of the rustic charm, or characterful imperfections associated with old school terracotta.
Casa Cotto, a rustic terracotta style product, comes in two colours, two sizes and two finishes. Natural finish ideal for walls and floors and antislip, perfect for shower floor, pool surrounds and patios. So it’s now possible to have a rustic terracotta floor that seamlessly flows from your kitchen into the garden.
Country is a pre-aged tile collection that looks perfect in traditional settings. Available in both brick and hexagon shapes - it’s beautiful, giving a space a finish that will look as if its been in-situ since the house style was conceived. The Hexagon white also looks incredible in Skandi style interiors, its warm white finish looks great in more stripped back setting.
Finally Marrakesh, is as the name implies , is a Moroccan inspire collection, featuring Bejmat and Zellige style tiles. These can be combined to create unmistakeably Morish, style schemes, or the terracotta style tiles look equally as wonderful in simple Skandi or contemporary style settings. bakedtiles.co.uk

Buying a bathroom involves many complex decisions and having someone guide you through the process, we feel, makes all the difference. Combining the latest trends and ideas
to suit your budget, we can source a huge selection of baths, toilets, shower enclosures, bathroom taps & shower fixtures, basins, shower trays, shower doors, walk-in showers, LED mirrors & cabinets, radiators, towel warmers & bathroom accessories. Although our showroom may be new, we don’t lack experience, having over 30 years in the industry. Originally a family-run business established in 1989 to both trade & public, we are now a small team with a passion for bathroom design.

through Herts at Home. They provide local care services, including support at home. How much does it cost? Well not as much as you might think. With the option of shared ownership, buyers can acquire properties at more affordable rates than they could be otherwise.
Understanding how shared ownership works
By opting for shared ownership, prospective residents can purchase a quality apartment at less than the market value. This is possible thanks to bpha retaining part ownership. “This is a great way to free up capital to make life easier or to take up the opportunities in life that wouldn’t otherwise be available,” say bpha. Apartments at Eywood House are ready to move into and are valued from £206,250 for a 75 per cent share, with the remaining share owned by bpha. A monthly service charge also applies, and you will need to factor in any care costs. Eywood House offers a range of amenities and facilities on site including a communal garden and terrace which will provide an opportunity for staff and residents to meet, dine outdoors and participate in external group activities. Eywood House provides the security and privacy of your own home, plus the reassurance of 24-hour emergency response. Care and support can be tailor-made to suit your needs and adapted in the future if needed.
But you will need to hurry as Eywood House has been so popular there are only two apartments left!

TYE ARCHITECTS : Case study
Settled in the open countryside in Buckinghamshire this house is nestled in a secluded rural location, reflecting its surroundings of mature woodland. The setting and elegant simplicity were paramount to the design of this house.
The brief was to provide a dwelling which responds to its context in materiality. A simple palette of carefully selected materials includes the use of stone from the earth on the lower level and timber on the floating box of the upper level, enhanced by a green tinted series of panels to provide transparency and reflect the surrounding plot-scape.
With clean geometric lines, the floating first floor cantilevers and balances on the ground floor, providing long reaching views from the master bedroom and several short distance views of the plot from the other bedrooms. This architectural element pulls you into the site and allows you to marvel at its geometry and weightlessness.
The lower floor is grounded by the strong stone element; the roofing detail of the first floor floats, gliding with the frameless glazing.
Approaching the house, the glass enhances the large open spaces. The open plan ground floor connects from the front entrance area through to the rear garden and a horizontal expanse of glazing connects the rear living spaces to the garden-scape to the rear.
Vertical electronically controlled louvres to the windows provide solar shading and privacy shading
to the bedrooms. Wooden sliding door panels, some recessed and hidden in the walls allow for areas to be discretely closed off. The house is fully equipped with a home cinema room and an outdoor amphitheatre. A sunroom in the garden provides an area for outdoor living where you can sit outside in a sheltered area at different times of the day and enjoy the views of the house and the landscaped garden.
This project is energy efficient and environmentally friendly with ground source heat pumps providing the heating and hot water. To further reduce the carbon footprint, the house is also equipped with solar panels and low energy lighting.
This dwelling was designed to create an elegant, contemporary family home with an open plan layout that is an environmentally sustainable, contextually relevant and timeless concept. tyearchitects.com
