I was fortunate to be born with a gift, but I have had to work hard to develop it. I’ve spent many years in a private spiritual circle that helped me to enhance my capabilities of being a psychic and a medium. And, I am still learning every day. What was your first psychic experience like? I was brought up with a spiritual family so I acknowledged spirits from the age of 4. I’ve never been frightened of seeing spirits from the spirit world. When I was 13, I laid in my bed and my whole room turned into the most vivid colour blue and I had seen my first guardian angel. Can you learn to become a medium? Only if you have the gift in the first place then you can then develop the spirituality within you. It takes a great deal of hard work to develop the gift. I teach and develop people on a weekly basis. But it does take a lot of work, dedication and trust in oneself. Who are your clients? I have varied clientele from around the world. Do most people ask about their dead loved ones or their future loved ones more? Yes. They do ask about their dead loved ones, but they do also ask about their loved ones on earth. Is there anything you would not reveal? There is always a way to deliver a message. As long as I do it with responsibility and moderation, I reveal everything. They come to me for the truth. Forewarned is forearmed to prevent bad things occurring. What should people do to get the most out of a reading? Some people come in and think by blocking and not talking they can put me on the spot. But if they open up a little, they will get a lot more coming through from the spiritual world. Can you explain the meaning of the words medium, psychic and clairvoyant? Mediumship is about connecting to the other side. Psychic is about the present and future. Clairvoyancy is about going to somebody’s house in my mind, looking around and explaining what the house looks like. People think all 3 are psychic, but this is not so as each one has a different meaning. I am a healer and wellness coach too – a service which more and more people want since the pandemic.

What do you experience when giving a reading? I have the five senses, I feel, see, taste, smell and hear. Each sense comes with a different approach. MAP STORES, HARPENDEN When did Map Stores launch and why? The website, was launched in September 2018. The physical store in Harpenden took on it true form (as it is now) in March 2020. At the start of 2017 I was at a crossroads, following a couple of big life events, I had decided to take 6 months off to reflect, rest and recuperate. During this time I started the business concept and it just grew from there. I’m not very good at doing nothing.

What were you doing before? I had worked in the fashion industry for 20 years as a product developer, garment technologist and technical manager. Working with high end brands, High Street and online retailers. It was a career I loved and it had taken me all over the world but I could start to feel a wind of change, so it was the right time to do something different. Where are you based and how important is this to you? We are based in the beautiful Hertfordshire town of Harpenden. Who’s in the team and what do they do? We are a tiny, but perfectly formed team. There is me, ‘Jack of All Trades’. Then there is Fabian, who is the Operations Director, a master of all things logistical and who makes sure the day to day running of the store is smooth. Including the soulful sounds, carefully considered to create the right ambiance, which is very important to the vibe we want for our customers. Then there is Emma, Creative Director and a huge influence on the product and concept side of the business. We have all come from a similar background in fashion and so, as a team, we have always spoken a very similar language, which is a big part of our strength as a team. Star Wars concept artwork poster sells for more than £53,000 By Alex Green

n original piece of concept artwork for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back has sold at auction for £53,125. The full-colour painted piece from 1980, the year the film was released, went under the hammer as part of the Prop Store’s live cinema poster online auction, which fetched a total of more than £384,000. The piece by Josh Kirby was expected to sell for up to £8,000. The second film in the Star Wars film series, The Empire Strikes Back became the highest-grossing film that year, earning around 401.5 million US dollars worldwide. The artwork features characters from the franchise including Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. Elsewhere in the sale, a Star Wars film poster from 1978 wishing its recipient a happy first birthday sold for £5,000. Another poster, from Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977 featuring the tagline “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” sold for £4,062. Other posters featured among the lots were for films such as Apocalypse Now, The Brides Of 42 JANUARY 2022
Dracula, The Day The Earth Stood Still and Evil Dead. Prop Store chief executive Stephen Lane said: “We continue to exceed all expectations and produce another phenomenal auction. “Alternative movie posters continue to increase in popularity and value, and items from the Bryan Fuller and Charles Lippincott collections sold exceptionally well. “Our global bidders were very active throughout the auction and we’re looking forward to presenting another outstanding collection of posters in April 2022.” Mark Hochman, the auction house’s poster expert, added: “Prop Store’s first two-day poster auction proved to be a special event and more successful than we could have hoped for in the current climate, with our Star Wars content proving incredibly popular and very well received with an incredible £53,125 being achieved for our Empire Strikes Back original artwork painting. “There were certainly some impressive sale prices across the whole auction with the Howard Kazanjian and Bryan Fuller collections reaching impressive prices, with once again our Alternative Movie Poster offerings one of the standout categories.”

o, you’ve decided to take the plunge and do Veganuary this year. It’s a brilliant thing to do – you get to learn more about the diet, do your bit for the planet and reap some of the health benefits. But it can be quite a daunting prospect, particularly if you’re a full-time carnivore. What, no meat or dairy – for the whole month? Like a lot of New Year’s resolutions, Veganuary might be tricky to stick to if you’re not prepared. The best way to set yourself up for success is to make sure your fridge and cupboards are stocked with all the essentials – but you don’t want to have to spend lots of money to overhaul your diet. If you’re writing a shopping list ahead of Veganuary, these are some things to keep in mind…

What to buy… • Nuts: When the 4pm munchies come around, you might be absolutely stumped. What can you have that is actually plant-based, and not totally boring? To make sure you don’t spend loads of money on fancy vegan cereal bars or energy balls, we recommend bulk-buying nuts on Amazon. Delicious and filling, a handful of these will sort you out for the rest of the day. Vegan butter: If you’re a complete newbie to veganism, we wouldn’t suggest diving into plantbased baking – it’s quite tricky and you might be disappointed with the results. Definitely buy a good butter replacement – maybe a sunflower or olive oil spread. We’d argue you can’t really taste the difference between that and normal butter, particularly when slathered inside a sandwich. • Vegan yogurt: The same goes for vegan yogurt. Perfect on granola, in curries – you don’t have to think much about it, just use it as you would dairy yogurt. • Fresh fruit and veg: This one almost goes without saying and should be part of your shop anyway – Veganuary or not. Opt for fruit and veg that’s in season to minimise your carbon footprint, and don’t be afraid of buying a lot – you might find you need to eat greater quantities now you’re missing out on meat. It’s also definitely worth supplementing with beans, grains and pulses –
lentils and chickpeas will become your best friend this month.
What not to bother with… • Loads of meat replacements: While you absolutely can’t go wrong with a good vegan sausage every once and a while, we wouldn’t hugely recommend spending all your money on meat replacements. They tend to be expensive, and you don’t necessarily know what’s in them – and you don’t want to forgo all the health benefits of a vegan diet by exclusively eating processed foods. • Vegan cheese: This is a controversial one, because some vegans love plant-based cheese. Unfortunately, we’ve never come round to it – it just doesn’t really taste like the original, and chances are, you’ll be disappointed. Our stance is: if you avoid cheese entirely this month, you won’t end up missing your normal hunk of Cheddar.

The Enduring Appeal of

I
t’s been likened to a quiet storm. The type of idea that makes its way to our shores in whispers, riding the crest of waves like origami, wabi sabi and kintsugi. Far too ancient to be considered trendy, Japanese influences are nevertheless ever-present — at once as a vehicle for outstanding aesthetics, and as a roadmap for a more fulfilling life. The infatuation predates even today’s crop of international tastemakers. Charlotte Perriand, the acclaimed French designer, spent much of her heyday in Japan, and so did Italian architect Gianfranco Frattini. But what is novel, perhaps, is how necessary the Japanese approach to living now feels. How the Japanese home came to embody the ideals of serene, considered living is explained by Joy Hendry in her seminal 1995 essay, Wrapping Culture. “In Japanese culture, there is a certain power attached to the condition of being enclosed. Ascetics who shut themselves away were said to gain spiritual power, a concept in Japan known as utsubo”. While utsubo initially only applied to a handful of Zen philosophers, it soon trickled into the wider culture, leading to a reverence of life indoors and a more thoughtful approach to the way we design interiors. Today, many Japanese homes are distinguished by a sense of lightness. Dining room furniture is kept classic and minimal with clear open lines that encourage conversation, while sculptural

paper lanterns provide a soft halo of luminosity overhead. In this pantheon of aesthetics, sharp edges find short shrift, replaced instead by soft rounded silhouettes that seem to have been shaped by the elements instead. It’s an idea that even extends towards some of the more traditionally bulky items of furniture. In the hands of designers like Isamu Noguchi and Naoto Fukasawa, beds, bookcases and coffee tables seem to float above the ground, maximising the sense of available space. Journalist Marilena Sobacchi has described this new lexis of lightness as a concentration of expressivity in minimal form. We like to think of it as the ability to say a lot with a little. In the absence of excessive ornamentation, there is room to think. An idea that Marie Kondo explores in her bestselling series The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. “When your room is clean and uncluttered, you have no choice but to examine your inner state.” Marie Kondo Nor is the search for levity directly restricted to
interiors. As the news cycle intensifies, downloads of meditation apps like Calm and Headspace have reached fever pitch. So too, has the demand for a new type of influencer, the kind that advocates buying once and buying well over an endless cycle of materialism. Transcending the Zeitgeist in 2022 will naturally look different for everyone. But there’s something rather endearing about the idea that calm, stillness and serenity can become the house you live in. It’s in this arena that Japanese inspired-interiors excel.
