ith a history that spans more than 114 years, Danish Design House Georg Jensen was founded in 1904 by Georg Jensen himself. The brand represents quality craftsmanship and timeless aesthetic design, creating silverware and flatware, fine jewellery, watches, accessories and a home collection. Trace the evolution of the Princess’s style, from the demure, romantic outfits of her first public appearances, to the glamour, elegance and confidence of her later life. From her earliest royal engagements, everything Diana wore was closely scrutinised. “In 1987, Nina Koppel designed a silver ring that led to the creation of the iconic Fusion collection” is a departure from traditional jewellery because it encourages the wearer to be part of the jewellery design by offering endless combinations which fit together perfectly to create one unique ring. The ability to design a Fusion ring according to the tastes of the wearer is what has always set Fusion apart. Whether it is rose, yellow or white gold with or without diamonds, the rings can be put together in any combination, seamlessly interlocking with each other. Fusion represents an iconic chapter in the rich history of Georg Jensen designs by combining the finest materials with the highest class of craftsmanship. The collection has now expanded and evolved to also consist of bangles, pendants and earrings. She graduated in 1966 and later that year established her own workshop. She began her collaboration with Georg Jensen in the 1980’s with her initial designs created in silver. In 1987, Nina Koppel designed a silver ring that led to the creation of the iconic Fusion collection. Ushering in a new way of design in modern jewellery, Fusion’s endless combinations encourage the wearer to create their own personal ring. Luxury in the Heart of St Albans Stepping into Sopwell House it is hard to believe I am only in St Albans and not walking into a five star hotel in the heart of London, it really does have the wow factor

opwell House, Where do I start? We were greeted not only by happy and attentive staff, but also a roaring fire and an amazing display of gingerbread houses presented in reception. The smell of the gingerbread and log fire was so welcoming. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist and then shown to our room by the porter, John. We were lucky enough to be staying in one of the Mews suites, a short walk out of the hotel and through some beautiful gates, making it a more private and luxury place to stay. As John showed us to our suite, he explained that now refurbished, it was once an old stable block. There are 16 mews suites, all surrounded by beautiful flowers and twinkly lights – and right in the centre an infinity hydrotherapy pool for Mews guests only. I felt like I was part of some sort of luxury and exclusive club. The room we stayed in was called Hornbeam. John made sure we knew

where everything was and how everything worked, again illustrating to us that Sopwell House prides itself on amazing customer service and attention to detail. My husband and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and the staff had gone over and above by leaving us rose petals on the bed, a card and complimentary macaroons in our room – a lovely touch. The suite was so impressive and elegantly decorated. The living area had a fireplace and beautiful sofas and the bed was huge and so comfortable. The bathroom was spotless with an array of luxury products included and a huge rainfall shower head. My husband and I thought this would be a great time to try the hydro pool out, so we were impressed to see flip flops and extra towels available as well as big white fluffy dressing gowns. It was the perfect hour with glass of bubbles in hand, relaxing whilst the sun went down and all garden started to light up. It was completely relaxing and romantic all at the same time, what a way to spend the afternoon – and we were lucky enough to get that time all to ourselves. In the evening we booked into the restaurant, stopping in the cocktail bar first for a Special Festive cocktail and it was stunning. We were greeted and shown to our table in the restaurant which had pretty lighting and relaxing music thanks to the resident pianist. The staff were so attentive and everyone was so lovely to wish us a happy anniversary and remember our names – I really felt this was such a nice touch.
After a glass of Champagne and some yummy amuse bouche sent from the chef, we decided to order our courses. I went for roasted quail to start, then opted for Norfolk turkey and chocolate log for dessert. My husband went for press of black leg chicken to start, rump of lamb for main and cheese board to follow. The assistant restaurant manager Lorenzo recommend a wine to go along with our meals as we fancied a nice bottle of red and we went for a Malbec which was to die for and went gloriously with our meal. Throughout the meal we were looked after by Alina who was attentive, professional and so happy-go-lucky she really made the service for us. The food at Sopwell House is incredible, every mouthful was bursting with flavour and so inventive with twists and turns with a touch of something different. We were lucky enough to meet the chef and give him our compliments. After dinner we retired to the bar in the conservatory where we were looked after by Dale. My husband is partial to a Bloody Mary and I love an Espresso Martini. Dale was keen to make sure our cocktails were to our tastes – asking for souror sweet or spicy or very spicy Bloody Mary’s! I can honestly say this was the first time my husband hasn’t sent back his Bloody Mary to be spicier! I can honestly say this was the first time my husband hasn’t sent back his Bloody Mary to be more spicy. It was a lovely end to a spectacular day and night at Sopwell House and I can honestly say without question we will be back and will make use of the spa. From start to finish it was an incredible stay topped off with a beautiful English breakfast and a walk of the grounds.
If you want amazing customer service, luxury rooms and incredible food with inventive cocktails plus a spa to top it all off, Sopwell is for you. I left feeling relaxed and knowing I had enjoyed one of my favourite anniversaries yet. I highly recommend Sopwell House, five stars all the way. Auberge du Lac turns 20!
A
uberge du Lac opened its doors in 1998 and has enjoyed a fabulous 20 years on the Hertfordshire Restaurant scene. Situated on the Brocket Hall Estate, the restaurants opening provided a new chapter in the Estates history. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Phil Thompson of THOMPSON St Albans returned for this very special evening to join Head Chef, Matt Edmonds in the kitchen. Thompson was Head Chef at Auberge du Lac from 2002 to 2013 and is currently the longest serving Chef in the history of the restaurant and enjoyed numerous awards including 3 AA rosettes and a Michelin Star. After leaving Auberge du Lac, Thompson opened up his own restaurant THOMPSON St Albans. Thompson has established his restaurant as one of the leading restaurants in Hertfordshire earning three AA rosettes in September 2017. Thompson featured on Masterchef – The Professionals as a judge and takes a regular spot on local radio. Coming from a family of Chefs, Thompsons dream was always to own his own restaurant and when he found the building in St Albans that is now THOMPSON St Albans, he knew it was time to make his dream a reality. Edmonds has been Head Chef at Auberge du Lac for nearly two years and like Phil, has a focus on finding new flavour combinations, always learning and discovering new ways to showcase his food. From a young age, Matt was always aware of where food came from and how it was prepared. His grandfather was a dairy farmer and his grandmother had an allotment, so the 26 JANUARY 2019

countryside and it’s produce played a big part in his upbringing. His first steps into the industry were alongside a Michelin-starred chef, who took Matt on as an apprentice. He has since worked at some of the finest country estates as well as Searcy’s at The Gherkin. It seemed only fitting to invite Thompson back into the kitchen to celebrate turning 20. The duo of Chefs devised an exceptional menu for the evening treating guests to Weymouth Crab, Pan Fried Turbot with Scallop, Venison and Opalys & Pistchio Cremeux to name a few of the mouth-watering dishes on the menu. Wine pairings were provided by the restaurants experienced front of house team to create an evening that paid tribute to each Chefs style of cooking while in the beautiful surroundings of the 543 acre estate. Edmonds enjoyed the experience of having his predecessor in the Kitchen, ‘It was an honour and a privilege to have Phil back for the first time since leaving the estate five years ago. Having decided the menu together, working hard to complement each other’s style of cooking, we knew it would be a great combination. Sharing Phil’s knowledge of 11 years on the Estate and winning a star during his time here made for a brilliant evening. All guests left happy and it was a great way to celebrate Auberge du Lacs 20 years in business. We hope to see him back again soon!’ Thompsons return to the kitchen in Auberge du Lac was also a positive one and settled straight back into very familiar surroundings, ‘It was an honour to be asked back to cook with Matt for the 20th anniversary, it felt amazing to be back, it just reminded me of how beautiful this place really is. It was a brilliant night!’ Auberge du Lac has enjoyed a hugely successful 20 years in the business and while the evening was a fitting tribute to the past, eyes are on the future to see what is next for the restaurant. Michael Longshaw, Managing Director of the Brocket Hall Estate, has high hopes for its future and hopes to see a Michelin star back on the estate. ‘The team are going from strength to strength and being awarded two AA rosettes in the first year
was a fantastic achievement. 2019 will build on the hard work already put in by the team and I am excited to see the next phase at Auberge du Lac.’ 2019 looks set to be a terrific year with a series of events to celebrate its 21st birthday. Wine dinners, cocktail evenings, foraging, kitchen experiences are just a few of the things planned for this very exciting chapter in the history of the Brocket Hall Estate. Housed in Brocket Hall’s former hunting lodge, Auberge du Lac enjoys an idyllic lakeside setting overlooking the stunning 543-acre country estate and the hall itself. Awarded two AA rosettes, Auberge du Lac is an award winning restaurant that provides exceptionally prepared food in a relaxed and beautiful environment. Five private dining rooms and exclusive use of the restaurant make it the perfect location for special occasions and celebrations.

Eleri Lynn, curator of ‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’, said, ‘Diana, Princess of Wales, was one of the most photographed women in the world, and every fashion choice she made was closely scrutinised. THE SONGS. THE SOUND. THE STORY. Motown the Musical Celebrates 60 Years of Motown!
“Motown the Musical tells the thrilling tale of the man who broke barriers and fought against the odds to define the sound of a generation”
S
ixty years ago – on 12 January 1959 - a man with an unstoppable dream invented a sound that would be remembered forever. Motown the Musical follows the legendary career of Berry Gordy and the creation of his musical empire, Motown Records. The story begins with the young Berry dreaming big, hoping one day to make people as happy and proud. After a few years on Detroit’s automobile assembly line he sets his sights on bringing a socially charged, racially divided country together with music. With an $800 loan from his family, Berry founds a music making factory. Motown is born! Berry not only had a great eye and ear for talent,
30 JANUARY 2019
but he was also able to nurture that talent, helping to create an incredible array of superstars - from Diana Ross and the Supremes, to Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and many more. But with the Vietnam War looming and America at a cultural turning point, Berry realised the time had come to push for something bigger than he ever dreamed of: to make music that could get the whole world moving to the same beat. Motown the Musical tells the thrilling tale of the man who broke barriers and fought against the odds to define the sound of a generation – complete with the ups and downs of the personal relationships, the professional struggles, and – of course – the music that made history. Discover the story behind the beat that changed minds, touched lives and took the world by storm. Motown the Musical shows how one label and its roster of legendary artists created the soundtrack that transformed America and gave the world a new musical vocabulary – the Motown Sound. With over 40 classic songs such as “My Girl”, “Stop! In The Name of Love”, “Dancing in the Street”, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” played by a 15-piece orchestra, this explosive event is the next chapter of Motown’s incredible 60-year history. An experience you’ll never forget, celebrate Motown’s phenomenal anniversary before the final performance in London’s glittering West End this Spring. Shaftesbury Theatre. THE CONNAUGHT BAR GIN Born, blended and bottled in Mayfair
T
o mark its 10th anniversary at the heart of the London bar scene, The Connaught Bar is celebrating the past while enjoying a taste of the future with the unveiling of its very own crafted-in-house gin. Fronted by master mixologist Agostino Perrone, every element of this one-of-a-kind spirit has meticulously been created at the heart of The Connaught. With a nod to traditional gin methods but a character all of its own, its singular blend of botanicals is inspired by a decade of cocktail craftsmanship. The multi-award winning Connaught Bar designed by David Collins Studio and known for its landmark cocktails and daring new mixes has truly become an institution for cocktail lovers. An established classic London gin recipe forms the foundation of the Connaught Bar Gin blend. Its base botanicals are drawn from the classics: handcrushed juniper berries, coriander seeds, liquorice,

angelica root and orris root. Two unique botanicals distinguish this Gin: the famous Amalfi lemon, renowned for its sweet flavour and served with The Connaught Bar’s celebrated martini, and red wine from the vineyards of Bordeaux. Reminiscent of a 1920’s cocktail shaker, the glass bottle design takes inspiration from the glamorous cubist interiors of The Connaught Bar and is ready to be enjoyed shaken, stirred and straight up or on the rocks. Agostino Perrone, Head of Mixology at The Connaught says: “The Connaught Bar Gin has truly been a labour of love and an unforgettable experience. When we first sat down to discuss producing a one-of-a-kind spirit, our main effort was to put together all the essences that we believe encapsulates the bar to create an exceptional gin. We hope The Connaught Bar gin celebrates the creativity we’ve been injecting since we opened 10 years ago!”

Estimates will range from £300 to £100,000 and will comprise around 150 lots in total. Three of the pieces on offer are these amazing glass models of jelly fish by renowned sculptors and modellers the Blaschka brothers, whose glass models were made for natural history museums worldwide. One of the models represents the most famous of jelly-fish, the Portuguese Man of War, whose long tentacles can deliver the most painful of stings, enough to kill most fish and in rare cases, humans. It’s vivid blue tentacles are perfectly represented in this model in swirling glass and it is almost impossible to believe how delicate the model is, and that it has survived for almost 150 years of turmoil within Europe. Renowned for their ingenuity and craftsmanship, their work from 1863-80 is a magical moment where art meets science. Working in Dresden, the brothers, who were formerly jewellers, turned their hand to natural history, created over 10,000 models during their years of business, representing over 700 invertebrate species. Benedict Winter who is Junior Specialist, Furniture and Works of Art, Christie’s London, has shared some specific insights below which I thought could be helpful. “I first came across Peter

A fantastical journey from icy polar seas to pulsating coral reefs, from the luminous deep sea to enormous kelp forests: immerse yourself with Blue Planet II – Live In Concert, a simply breath-taking and epic show that you will never forget. The concert will present a selection of incredible visuals from the series, highlighting the amazing natural wonders of our blue planet in breath-taking detail, projected on a giant state of the art 4K Ultra HD LED screen. The concert will feature exciting visuals from the show including the now infamous Tusk fish, the Crab and Eel rock pool chase and the ‘folklore-turned-reality’ Sea Lion tuna hunt, to name but a few. The concert will be hosted by BBC presenter Anita Rani, a highly-respected TV personality. Anita is a household name as one of the presenters of the BBC One series Countryfile, and regularly appears in and presents the BBC’s One Show. She has also presented programmes including Bollywood: The World’s Biggest Film Industry and Watchdog. In 2015 Anita was also a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Rani said of narrating Blue Planet II – Live In Concert: I am really honoured to have the role of host on the Blue Planet II Live In Concert arena tour. The TV series was such a fantastic and enlightening show and has really empowered society to view our oceans and environment with a great deal more care. I can’t wait to stand on stage with an 80-piece orchestra and huge screen showing some of that incredible Blue Planet II footage, it should be an amazing experience!” The Blue Planet II television show was the most watched TV programme of 2017 in the United Kingdom, reaching 37.6 million viewers. During the four-year filming, the teams embarked on 125 expeditions, travelled to 39 countries, filmed on all continents and in every ocean. They spent 6,000 hours deep-sea diving, 1,000 of which were on underwater boats. Logistically, some of these expeditions could be compared to a trip into space – such was the effort. In the process, the camera teams encountered creatures that appeared so strange that they really did seem to come from a different planet!

BUYING YOUR FIRST SUPERCAR
Lucky enough to be in the market for some seriously exotic machinery? Here’s where to start, says Ryan Hirons
A
lmost all drivers dream of owning a supercar - but it’s a reality that only a lucky few will ever get to experience. If you’re finally in a position to make this dream come true for you however, there are a few important things you’ll need to keep in mind. While buying a regular car brings its own set of challenges, a supercar is a whole other ball game. There’s a lot to consider - some are hard to find, insurance could be an issue, and then there’s finding a place nearby with the know-how for its servicing, which on this level of car is more crucial than most. 40 JANUARY 2019
Here’s our guide to help get you on the path of supercar ownership... I want a supercar! Where do I start? Just like any car-shopping, you need to know exactly what you’re after, whether that’s something to show off with in summer, tuck away in the garage as an investment, or hound around the Nurburgring. It’s also worth considering your budget, of course. If you’re buying new, prices can be difficult to source once you reach a certain part of the market - so don’t expect to be able to just find out how much that McLaren 600LT you crave will be

on finance, without jumping through some hoops. Start by heading online to use configurators (just about every firm has one), and creating your perfect spec. That can then be sent off to your nearest dealer, who can discuss prices with you there. The used market is a whole different ball game. Supercars on the lower end of the scale tend to depreciate a fair bit, so be prepared - just as with any car - to research things to look out for. Issues can be common on this kind of machinery, simply due to how complicated and fragile components can be, and of course you’ll need to ensure the car has been well-kept. Sometimes, a cheap deal isn’t the best deal. Time to shop around and test drive! Do I need to do anything differently? Just like any car, once you’re in the classifieds, it’s best to shop around and take a look at a number of examples of cars you’re looking at. For preregistered cars, that might be finding the right spec, while used brings condition and history to the table. Take your time to research, and don’t just settle on the first thing you come across. As for test drives, these are also the same - albeit potentially harder to book, as a seller or dealership won’t want just any regular punter to turn up asking for a spin in their exotic machinery. Research issues and things to look for in a particular supercar which are often well-documented online by owners - and use the test drive as an opportunity to sniff them out. It’s very easy to get excited by the prospect of driving what could be your very first supercar - but don’t let that cloud your judgement on a test drive. After all, once you have the right machine, you’ll have time to enjoy it. I’m ready to buy! What next? You’ve found the right car, and everything is in place for you to make the purchase. First, decide how you’re paying - if you’re buying it outright, lucky you! Otherwise, search around for the best deals on finance or a loan. It’s also worth remembering that despite these exotic machines costing huge sums of money, there’s still room to haggle - unless you’re at the ultra-desirable end of the scale. Payment plan secured, it’s time to look at insurance. Believe it or not, most regular insurance companies will be able to offer an insurance quote on your new supercar just like a regular family hatchback - albeit premiums will likely be higher. There’s also the option of specialist insurers which focus exclusively on high-end machinery, and may be able to offer a cheaper quote as a result. It’s also worth keeping in mind general maintenance and running costs are going to be higher before fully committing. With fragile components prominent in many supercars, they require more care and attention than most daily runabouts will - so be prepared to spend a good amount on servicing and repairs if needed. 42 JANUARY 2019
“It’s very easy to get excited by the prospect of driving what could be your very first supercar - but don’t let that cloud your judgement on a test drive”
I have the keys! Anything else I should know? Well done, you’ve entered the elite world of supercar ownership. Go show it off to the world! Or stick it in the garage for investment, that’s your call now. If it’s the former, be prepared to be asked questions about it frequently from admirers and those envious alike. Oh, and the occasional social media appearance of course. We should also hit home the point on being sensible with the performance. Supercars tend to have bags of power, which is fine on a racetrack, but do avoid the temptation to hit the boot on every straight, clear road you see. Even more so if this is your first time driving a car of this type, as the performance could prove overwhelming. Stay safe and have fun!

THE ART OF THE SURREAL EVENING SALE 27 February 2019
L
eading the sale is René Magritte’s masterpiece Le Lieu Commun, 1964, one of the finest and largest examples of his iconic bowler-hatted men. With an estimate sale price of between £15,000,000£25,000,000. Never before offered at auction, and poised to set a new world auction record for the artist, the work offers a unique vision of the wandering icon in that it offers a view of the figure both full-face and hidden behind a column in an ambiguous landscape of either impossible or multiple reality. The large scale (39 3/8 x 31 7/8 in. and 100 x 81 cm.) oil on canvas, signed ‘Magritte’ in the upper right corner, will be on view from 22 - 27 February 2019 ahead of the auction. Le Lieu Commun was formerly owned by Gustave Nellens, the great collector who commissioned the ‘Le Domaine Enchanté’ series of eight paintings by Magritte, and owned many great works by the artist, as well as the Fuji Museum in Tokyo. It is one of four paintings featuring the bowler-hatted man from 1964 that mark the culmination of this theme in Magritte’s work. The others are Le Fils de L’Homme, made for Harry Torczyner and which previously set the world record for the artist when auctioned in 1999, La Grande Guerre and L’Homme au Chapeau Melon. The three other paintings featured a simpler image of a single bowler-hatted man standing in front of a seascape and facing the viewer. In each of these works the face of the man has been obscured by an object: either an apple or a white dove. For the first time, Magritte makes use of a strip-like play with perspective and a forest view in a technique that anticipates one of the greatest paintings of his very last years – Le Blanc Seing of 1965, held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington - in which the image of a horse and rider are ambiguously intertwined with the tree trunks of the surrounding forest.

Olivier Camu, Deputy Chairman, Impressionist and Modern Art, Christie’s: “In subject matter, rarity and scale, Le Lieu Commun is the most important painting by René Magritte to be offered at auction since 1999 when the painting Le Fils de L’Homme, created for Harry Torczyner, the great friend and patron of the artist, was sold for a then world record price. The everyman figure of the bowler-hatted man was used by Magritte as a pictorial cypher, moving between layers of reality. The present work is highly enigmatic and inventive. In Le Lieu Commun Magritte subverts the traditional genres of portrait and landscape painting and challenges our understanding of reality and representation; he plays with the viewer’s sense of what is real and what can be perceived. Uniquely we see this figure both in front of and behind the column so that he is at once revealed and obscured. We are thrilled to offer this as the leading work of our 18th edition of the dedicated The Art of the Surreal Evening Sale.”

Comfort & Trust
W
e’re all familiar with the feeling of complete exhaustion after a long flight. You get picked up from the airport by a loved one and fall asleep almost before they pull out of the car park. That feeling of comfort and trust is one that Terry McCann, Driver and Driver Manager at Herts Executive, aims for each journey. In fact, if a passenger does fall asleep in the back of his car, he sees it as job well done. Achieving this level of confidence is a labour of love. It starts before he even collects his passenger, making sure all details are correct and that he arrives in plenty of time. Extra touches throughout the journey, such as taking an umbrella on a rainy day and offering to take his passenger via a late-night supermarket for provisions, all help to create a relaxed environment. Terry motivates the 30 drivers in his team to deliver this same VIP service to every single passenger. 48 JANUARY 2019
Terry’s ethos of exceptional service stems from a career spent helping others. First in the Army. Then as a paramedic. This background has given him a terrific eye for detail and the ability to plan ahead for every eventuality. It’s also helped to earn him loyal customers - and Silver Professional Driver of the Year in the Professional Driver QSi Awards 2018. It could be said that Terry embodies the Herts Executive story. From humble beginnings 20 years ago, Herts Executive has worked tirelessly to build a business that’s focused on a quality customer experience. It’s a journey that’s seen it become the biggest executive fleet in Hertfordshire. And, like Terry, an award winner - scooping up the Bronze Award for Chauffeur Company of the Year at the same event. Which is hardly surprising, with people like Terry at the helm. www.hertsexec.com

Love Handles - AAARGHH!
Dandelions on your lawn. Gremlins. Those are both things that are notoriously hard to get rid of. But not quite as hard, I think, as getting rid of love handles…
I
f you’ve tried losing weight, it’s quite likely that you’ve slimmed down all over – but those bulges around your gut are still there, spilling over the tops of your jeans and making it hard to wear fitted clothes. It’s similarly possible to whittle away every ounce of spare body fat through exercise – and yet still keep your love handles. They are usually the last thing to go, and for many people, never go at all.
Why ARE they so incredibly difficult to shift?
Two reasons. First of all, some people simply have a genetic predisposition to storing fat around their love handles – just as others are predisposed to storing fat around their tummies or thighs. That’s their natural body shape, and it has nothing to do with weight. You can be extremely lean, but you still have to store fat somewhere. Often, hormones are a factor too. High levels of oestrogen are associated with body fat being stored around the love handle area - in men as well as women. Second of all, it’s impossible to target your love handles with specific exercises, like you might target your arms, glutes or abs. Sure, you can do exercises that burn fat all over your body – but if your love handles are where your body likes storing fat, they’re not going anywhere. I know how frustrating this is from personal experience. I played squash at competitive level, was 54 JANUARY 2019
very careful with what I ate and yet my shirts never fitted me right because I just could not get rid of my love handles. I cannot tell you how many times I considered giving up my exercise and diet, because after all that effort – and despite being very fit – I still didn’t like my shape. Ultimately I realised that my love handles were not going away on their own, and that the only solution was to get some help from aesthetic medicine. (I chose Vaser, but as you already know, there are terrific non-surgical options.) If you, too, have tried diet and exercise but are still plagued by your love handles, it may be the best solution for you as well. If that is an option you would like to explore further, why not book a consultation with me at our Harpenden or London clinic. We will take a medical history, discuss what kind of results you want to achieve, and review the options to find the treatment that best fits with your goals, lifestyle and budget. If you’re already pretty sure you know which procedure you want, we’ll confirm you are a suitable candidate and put together your bespoke treatment plan. We are more than happy to work with your personal trainers as well to optimise your outcomes. We also have our in house personal trainer Ros Jaffa who will help you put together a long-term plan to maintain your results – and get the most out of any treatment.

S
o you’ve got the dazzling dress. And the shoes. And the bag. Your 2019 fashion look is sorted and now it’s time for the finishing touch - make-up. But what’s the best approach to beauty when you’ve got a showstopping frock on? “A sparkly party outfit calls for beautifully applied, glamorous make-up,” says celebrity make-up artist Aimee Adams, who has partnered with Rapid White.“The top trends right now are incorporating metallic and jewel tone colours. So many catwalk shows for AW18 like Prada, Giambattista Valli and Preen showed embellished or glittered faces.” But Adams isn’t suggesting you throw on a face full of glitter. “The easiest way to glam up your look is to choose your best feature and highlight it with a bit of extra oomph,” she says. “For instance, if your eyes are your best feature choose a sparkly eyeliner pencil and smudge along your top lash line. This is an easy evening twist on your normal daytime eyeliner.” Metallic textures can also give a chic shimmery finish. “I love using a metallic liquid or gel eye shadow as they are long-wearing and really reflect the light,” Adams says. “To keep it simple I sometimes just use a gold or silver shiny lip gloss patted onto the eyelids for a wet-look finish.” The final touch? “Always make sure your nails and toes are on point as well, and manicured in a glam colour or glitter finish.” And right on time, beauty brands have delivered a great selection of sparkly and glittery goodies to their collections.

MAKE 2019 YOUR STYLIST YEAR YET After the excess of Christmas, a wardrobe detox is just what personal stylist Nina Whitehead advises to help give your style some serious new year modus operandi. Here she shares her tips on what to ditch in your wardrobe to make you happy.
T
here is a difference between saying you hate everything in your wardrobe and owning items that actually make you feel sad. When it comes to your wardrobe, stocking it with items that make you happy should be a number one rule. Life is stressful enough, so when it comes to my wardrobe, I want it to be a place where I can temporarily escape to; one that makes me feel like the best version of my current self. Here, I break down the items I ditched from my wardrobe in order to make my life a happier one overall. From personal experience, I can tell you that letting go of these items was not a walk in the park, but after ripping off the band-aid, I live a life that is generally more at peace with my style, I increased my self confidence and I have less urges to buy new things all the time.
ITEMS THAT DON’T FIT I think it’s safe to assume that most of us keep more than one article of clothing hidden away in our wardrobes that used to fit, but no longer does. The intention behind keeping said item is to hopefully motivate yourself to trim down enough to fit into whatever it is. From personal experience, this tactic only stirs up negative feelings about your body, and no one wants that. Instead, I recommend ditching those items. For me, it’s my “too-skinny” mid rise jeans. I’m now investing in high-waisted jeans that fit, but also make me feel more confident and happier with my body.
PIECES WITH UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS When I was younger I had tended to buy articles of clothing that require a lot of work to wear—fashion tape, cross-over bras, slips, etc. Or items that I can only wear to one type of event - that strapless ball gown or an over complicated top and skirt, the kind of thing that you end up never wearing again. These items always overwhelm me when I come across them, as I remember all the activities I imagined myself doing in them, but never actually did and all the extra items I had to buy to make them work. Once you get rid of these not so versatile items from your wardrobe, promise yourself to buy pieces that are a breeze to wear, uncomplicated and doesn’t require a slip or cami top in every single colour you can think of.
PIECES GIVEN TO YOU OR HAND-MEDOWNS We can all fall into that trap of accepting items from our Mothers, Mother-in-laws, sisters, friends but this is just a cycle of cluttering rather than making you feel good. They are handing you the items that they no longer want, so why would you want them? If it’s a Burburry Mac, Chanel bag or a pair of Chloe boots I wouldn’t say no, but your mother-in-laws purchase from Matalan 5 years ago, just isn’t going 60 JANUARY 2019
to cut it with your style let alone your confidence. Learn to say thanks and then bag it up for the charity shop. Don’t feel bad about this, if they were going to chuck it out then there is no problem with you doing it for them.
ITEMS THAT HAVE DUST GATHERING When I am helping clients detox their wardrobes we often find items of clothing with a heavy layer of dust on them. Most commonly this is suits that women have worn in a past corporate life and are now either in a different job, are Mothers who don’t work or just have no need for suits in their life. Don’t hoard these in your wardrobe thinking one day if you go back to work in a corporate environment that you might drag those suits out of the back of your wardrobe, because inevitably you will buy yourself new clothes for your new job. Think of all that space you will create by getting rid of all those old suits that by gathering dust they are no longer wearable anyway. By having the items we love the most in our wardrobes we are taking back control of our identities and have a wardrobe that serves your life and future goals. If you need help with reviewing your wardrobe and want to develop your style then please get in touch to book your consultation. nina@edits-styling.com. www.edits-styling.com

Put your health first this year with a meaningful GP relationship
H
ave you ever wished for a relaxed consultation with your GP so you could discuss all your health concerns in one comprehensive visit? Or perhaps you’ve been frustrated that you can’t always see the GP you want to see when you make an appointment? If so, this year, invest in your health with the new Concierge Choice UK membership programme. The new service offers access to experienced GPs who care for NHS patients with the time and convenience that can sometimes be hard to secure. For an annual membership that costs just £100 per month, you have exclusive access to your hand-picked GP. This includes special hours each week dedicated to members so you can always secure a same-day/next-day appointment, and even your GP’s private email and mobile number for convenient and direct after-hours communication. This bespoke programme is perfect for anyone who wants to better manage their health this year, especially anyone with chronic or multiple health concerns. The annual membership includes an annual comprehensive health MOT that lasts up to an hour which gives you the opportunity to spend uninterrupted, meaningful time with your GP to discuss all your health concerns, establish your starting point and help you develop wellness goals

to work towards for the coming year. Perhaps most importantly to patients, you get peace of mind knowing you always have access to the GP you want. Your appointments will always be scheduled with the GP you choose, the doctor who knows your whole health history. These appointments are scheduled for 30 minute intervals, ensuring you can take your time and ask all the questions you need to feel comfortable. Another benefit of membership is that children of members receive complimentary membership. For many busy families, knowing they have their personal GP’s private mobile for any after-hours concerns that may arise, or even the convenience of emailing their GP for simple questions, is invaluable. There are participating GPs available throughout London and the home counties. Patients are able to select whichever GP they prefer, as long as they are not registered with that GP on the NHS. Concierge Choice UK GPs are dedicated to their service with the NHS. Their concierge membership programmes are limited in nature so as not to impact their service to NHS patients. Customer service representatives are available to discuss eligibility and programme benefits. Patients are urged to call 020 7776 9065 or visit www.ConciergeChoice.co.uk to secure their spot before the spaces sell out.

Could an annual health MOT from Concierge Choice UK help you stick to your new year’s health resolutions?
Why starting the year with a comprehensive health MOT could help you achieve your 2019 health goals
E
very January 1st, following the overindulgence of the festive season, most of us wake up determined that this year we are going to be better, healthier, and generally look after ourselves more. For some people this might be about getting fit or losing weight, but for others it could also mean committing to prioritising their mental wellbeing, reducing their cholesterol or stopping smoking However, by February, this resolve has usually slipped and we fall back into old habits. Starting the year with a comprehensive health MOT could help you stay on track and prioritise your health and wellbeing. For an annual fee, alongside other benefits, Concierge Choice UK members are entitled to an annual health MOT with their GP, lasting up to an hour, which includes blood tests and urine analysis. If you are between 40 and 74, you are also entitled to a free NHS Health Check every five years, designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia.
Check your baseline
history to identify what you need to focus on changing (e.g. diet, exercise, smoking), in your health MOT you have the opportunity for an unhurried conversation about how you will make these changes. Your GP can help you set achievable goals with actionable first steps towards them, so you leave feeling empowered to get started, not overwhelmed with information.
The tests included in a Concierge Choice UK health MOT can give you an idea of your baseline health indicators, so you can set your goals and also monitor your progress. For example, the blood test can check cholesterol levels, kidney function and liver function, and test for diabetes and anaemia.
Monitor your progress
Set achievable lifestyle goals
Concierge Choice UK members can hand-pick their GP from a network of experienced local GPs who have signed up to offer the service, so you can choose a GP who is right for you. The service is available to all; however, a patient can only register at a practice with a participating GP if they are not registered as an NHS patient at that practice. Once signed up, you will see the same GP every time you visit the surgery, allowing you and your GP to form a long-term, personal relationship and ensuring continuity of care. Your first annual health MOT, carried out by your chosen GP, is a chance for them to really get to know about you and understand your health priorities. As well as the annual health MOT, Concierge Choice UK membership provides patients with access to same-day or next-day face to face relaxed consultations (up to 30 minutes). Members also receive their Concierge Choice GP’s mobile number and email for out of hours concerns.

Now, if only you could be so virtuous with your gym routine. Working out is great for your health, but your quest for the perfect bod could be having a negative impact on the environment. Between reusable plastic bottles, throwaway wet kit bags and bargain priced leggings, there’s a lot you can do to trash the planet before you’ve even stepped foot on the treadmill. Thankfully, gyms are making efforts to change the conversation: Chains like Barry’s Bootcamp and 1Rebel and have all gone plastic-free this year - but there’s still lots we can be doing on a micro level. If you’re keen to get more sustainable while working up a sweat, switch to these green products to make your gym bag more friendly to the planet.

Being Injury Aware For many, the winter weather does not get in the way of their daily run, however the risk of slips and falls is still common. Injuries caused by accidents like these, if left untreated, could lead to restricted movement and future pain when walking. Mr Garth Allardice, Consultant Orthopaedic – Foot and Ankle Specialist, from BMI The Clementine Churchill Hospital, Harrow warns “foot and ankle related injuries are very common when running in the winter; often ligament and tendon sprains/tears are seen as well as metatarsal stress fractures in the foot.”
“R
unning on ice/snow-covered roads is fun, stimulating, and even scenic, but the small, repetitive slip just before toe-off, will put extra stress on the Achilles and increased pressure on the metatarsals.” Stress fractures are hairline cracks in the foot bone, usually caused by repetitive, high impact sports such as running and walking at a fast pace. In winter, slippery walking conditions and falls on icy roads are some of the leading causes of foot-related injuries. If left untreated, it can be quite painful to walk and may lead to a complete break in the bone. Ankle injuries can be triggered by slipping and falling, causing strains, sprains, and fractures. Often people may think they’ve merely twisted their ankle because they’ve been able to walk after a fall, but that doesn’t mean the ankle is not broken. Symptoms of a fractured ankle include: • Physical bruising • Swelling around the ankle, leading to the foot • Significant pain, even with rest • Unable to stand, with weight on that foot To detect injury it is often best seeing a foot and ankle specialist who will perform a thorough physical examination and if indicated, imaging studies. If weight is continuously applied to a broken bone it could make the injury worse.
Be Treated Early You may be advised to have an x-ray to identify the area of the pain or, an MRI/CT scan may be requested if any hairline cracks are undetected on x-ray. Treatment often depends on the positioning of the bone and whether it has been displaced, as well as any ligament damage that may make the ankle unstable. An Orthopaedic (Foot and Ankle) Consultant, with the support of a Specialist Sports Physiotherapist, will advise on whether you will need a supportive boot or plaster and/or the use of crutches. Rest and analgesia will be paramount, which could be for a number of weeks, before regular mobility is restored. At BMI The Clementine Churchill Hospital, we have a team of Specialist Sports Physiotherapist that can help you on to the road to recovery. You’ll have access to the full-size gym, hydrotherapy pool, feet 24 therapy, and Shockwave Therapy.
Need surgery? Surgery tends to be the final option if the ligaments/ bones have not healed and function has not been restored. Your orthopaedic surgeon will discuss options with you. The procedure may require inserting a pin or plate to the ankle bone to help restore structure and repair any torn ligaments. For more information, please contact 020 8872 3975 or visit www.bmihealthcare.co.uk/cch.

Detect the early warning signs Checking moles can save lives
N
o matter how safe you’ve been all summer with protecting your skin, it’s still important to continue being vigilant the rest of the year. It is advised that you check your skin at least one a month, from head to toe, looking for any suspicious lesions or moles. Recognising the early signs of melanoma is vital as the earlier the diagnosis, the better the prognosis and melanoma treated early has a five year survival rate of over 98 percent. Here we describe the best methods used to identify suspicious moles: A common acronym used by dermatologists is ABCDE: Asymmetry - If you draw a line through the middle of your mole and the halves don’t match, this asymmetry may be a sign of melanoma. Border - Ragged, notched, blurred or irregular edges are all warning signs. Colour – Look out for moles that contain several different shades of brown, tan or black, or they may be red, white or blue. Diameter – Malignant moles are bigger in diameter, if it’s larger than 6 millimetres across, get it checked. Evolving – Changes in size, shape, colour, elevation or other characteristics are another warning sign. However not all melanomas fit neatly into these categories so there are a few other factors to take note of, if any occur see a doctor immediately. • A sore that does not heal
74 JANUARY 2019
• Redness or new swelling • Spread of pigment • If it becomes itchy, tender or painful • If there is a change in the surface: oozing, bleeding, appearance of a bump or lump
Searching for Ugly Ducklings If the ABCDE acronym seems complicated, there is a simpler way to identify a suspicious mole: ask yourself whether it’s an ‘ugly duckling’ that looks different from all the other moles around it. It may be a small red mole surrounded by bigger brown moles, or it may be larger and darker than the others. For someone who has few moles, any change in a spot or growth makes an ugly duckling and a trip to the doctors. Take note of how your skin normally looks as this will make it easier when it comes to noticing changes. Remember, checking your moles could save your life. If you have any concerns we have a team of dermatologists here at Spire Harpenden Hospital who are on hand to help you. Give us a call today to book an appointment: 01582 714 420.

The Winter Garden
In winter why do some plants go into dormancy and yet some still produce beautiful often fragrant flower?
A
utumn signifies leaf fall in deciduous plants (those that loose there leaves in winter) including evergreens into a state of dormancy brought about by temperature fall and light levels. A drop in temperature slows down a plant’s metabolism largely because the enzymes that drive these biochemical reactions don’t work so well in the cold. Photosynthesis slows, respiration slows and growth stops. Plants are also affected by day length and light levels this also triggers chemical reactions that induce the abscission layer to close in the axilliary point of the leaf to stem thus initiating leaf fall. Plants do almost all the photosynthesis ahead of time when they have leaves, and make enough sugars for the plant cells to survive the winter. The sugar gets stored as starch, plants break this down to use as energy during winter, like a mole uses stored fat when hibernating. Chilling normally prevents plants beginning growth during warm spells in the middle of the winter. However as climate change kicks in, plants are staying active longer or the time of dormancy is likely delayed or shortened and this could impact on their long term life expectancy due to stress related conditions. Long prolonged periods of cold can freeze cells in a plant, damage occurs when there is sudden temperature rise causing quick thawing which induces bursting of plant cells, slow thawing largely counters this problem. If evergreen plants lose all their leaves or the leaves have all gone brown, don’t panic, check for green tissue under the outer bark of the stem this signifies healthy tissue. If you are growing more challenging plants in the UK climate like date plum/ kaki (Diospyros kaki) then you may need to give it some added protection during winter. 80 JANUARY 2019
Some plants will flower on their bare stems during the winter example Lonicera fragrantissima, Corylus avellana and Edgeworthia chionantha. Flowering occurs then, as this gives plants an advantage in relation to maximising pollination potential thus avoiding competition. The native hazel (Corylus avellana) flowers in winter because it is pollinated via wind borne pollen. Flowering during another period would block the pollens potential to fertilise as leaves would form a barrier, limiting pollination. Snow does insulate evergreens from bitter temperatures and the winter sun can dry them out and cause them to burn and go brown. It’s best to leave snow on bows of trees and shrubs unless snow is very heavy and likely to snap the branches. Smaller plants are better left under the snow for insulation. Haw frost or snow on Trees and Shrub branches will add to the plants beauty and create a fairyland effect All seasons have their beauty. I hope you enjoy and appreciate the winter season too. www.kevinpressland.com

The Truth About Condensation in the Home
M
odern living has often created much more habitable rooms, but also living spaces that are much warmer. However these changes can lead to less ventilation and fewer air changes. The result is that water vapour produced by normal living is no longer able to escape up the chimney or through door jambs, window joints and other outlets. In fact, in certain circumstances, such material comforts can combine to create ideal conditions for the birthing of condensation, which tends to form on the coldest surfaces within any room. This may not necessarily be on the glazing. Air inside a building contains a certain amount of water vapour, which generally increases for example when kettles are boiled, baths are run and if clothes are dried indoors. The volume of water vapour that the air can hold is a function of its temperature. Obviously warm air has the capacity to hold more moisture vapour than cool air. Therefore, as the air circulates, and comes into contact with surfaces cooler than itself such as walls, woodwork and
82 JANUARY 2019
windows, the water vapour condenses, becoming liquid again. The steaming up of a bathroom mirror at shower time is a good example of how condensation droplets are formed; the mirror surface being cooler than the moisture-laden air. Whilst the condensed liquid will run-off glass or painted timber surfaces it is likely to soak into porous surfaces such as walls and ceilings. Condensed water that soaks into walls or untreated woodwork will damage the underlying substrate of the building while simultaneously providing the perfect environment in which unpleasant and unhealthy mould colonies can grow. Many studies into the effects of inhaling mould spores unanimously agree that it causes damage to the immune system, skin rashes and respiratory disorders such as sinusitis and pneumonia If home owners who have fitted energy rated replacement windows still experience condensation on the inside of their windows, it usually means that their property has a particular problem with condensation that they need to address through improving the balance between heating and ventilation. More often than not, these cases are caused by insufficient ventilation within certain rooms that need addressing, as new windows and doors are designed to retain heat, so if there is not enough ventilation then condensation can build up if warm moist air is trapped with nowhere to escape to. Such condensation can be reduced by leaving open window vents to allow fresh air in, or retro-fitting trickle ventilation (although these trickle vents can be expensive, ugly and defeat the object of fitting thermally efficient window products). Other solutions include adding air bricks, buying a de-humidifier or installing mechanical ventilation. The Glass and Glazing Federation’s own publication about condensation on their website, entitled “Condensation, Some Causes, Some Advice” goes out of its way to make it clear that if condensation occurs on the outside of the external pane on double or triple glazed windows this is a positive sign that these thermally efficient replacement window products are in fact performing well. Such a phenomenon tends to only occur at certain times of the year, depending on a property’s location and aspect. Normally such condensation forms early morning and is gone by lunchtime. As the GGF article on condensation advice for
UK home owners states “Due to recent innovations in the efficiency of double and triple glazing, along with updated requirements of building regulations and the lowering of carbon emissions, certain weather conditions may allow the formation of external condensation on energy efficient windows and doors. This is a natural phenomenon and a clear indication that the window or door is preventing heat loss from your house.” That said, condensation between the panes of glass in a double or triple glazed sealed unit means the unit has “blown” and is no longer providing the same level of thermal barrier that a modern high performance hermetically sealed unit can provide. Such blown units should be replaced ASAP, particularly in the colder months When fitting replacement double glazing, homes with a known pre-existing internal condensation problem (e.g. which is quite common in blocks of flats) that need more permanent ventilation can have trickle vents built into the window’s or door’s outer frame. Modern double-glazed replacement windows should offer a lockable night vent facility on all opening vents, which is a far better solution to condensation than trickle vents as the window can then be shut to keep out extreme cold if need be. The key factors in reducing condensation are having a) thermally broken, energy efficient windows and doors, b) sufficient heating, and c) enough ventilation.

xplosions of bold colour and radiant metallic accents swept across interiors of 2018 and will continue to do so well into this year. Inspired by the extravagant taste of baroque style, this trend is part of a winning effort to leave boring interiors in the past. Favouring an abundance of opulence, homemakers are setting out to create a feeling of luxury that celebrates the splendour of the home. They’re doing this through strong colours, bold accents, and inviting textures. Vivid colour schemes including royal blue, deep purples, and greens take their inspiration from all things grand such as classic European ballrooms and salons to breathtaking catholic churches. This explosion of luxe acts as a rebellion against modest styles such as minimalism and pale Scandinavian interiors. The walls of these inspired homes scream “we will not be boring” to the world. But why are they rebelling against plain homes? It all stems from the housing market crash of 2008. After the crash sellers were forced to play it safe with bland, inoffensive interiors as those styles were a far easier sell than heavily stylised homes. This cold minimalism was born out of necessity, and it stuck for a long time.

However, as the economy has recovered people have grown tired of this bare-bones philosophy and began to celebrate the character of their homes. Looking to project Richness and luxury, rather than desperation and hopelessness. People can now afford to take risks. And these risks take the form of colourful sensations over plain indifference. This rebellious wave of glitz and glamour sees no signs of slowing down as we enter the new year and will stay strong through many more years to come. With a selection of in-house designed rich velvet chairs, sofas, and footstools with deep colours and brass accents Cult Furniture is providing homeowners with an affordable option to ride this luxurious wave. One doesn’t need to be rich to have a home that both looks and feels rich. Take the Heather dining chair for example, with its brass legs and selection of rich colours including royal blue, these velvet upholstered chairs are a simple way to introduce an air of elegance to your space. They also work exceptionally well when paired with elegant tables and fine glassware. As the world enters a new year we wave goodbye to the bleak and look forward to good fortune and better times ahead. www.cultfurniture.com

Mastering the Arts C
lassic works of art by the old masters have never gone out of style and today, traditional fine art is seeing a significant resurgence. This revival of styles such as Renaissance, Romanticism and Neoclassicism has introduced a burgeoning trend; reproduction painting. Brights of Nettlebed have commissioned many hand-painted duplicates of fine art masterpieces, allowing customers to admire their favourite paintings in their own homes. One example of a classic reproduction the company has available is The House of Commons 1833. Based on a 19th century painting by Sir George Hayter, this is considered one of the most important representations of the Reform Act of 1832, an event which changed the political landscape of Britain. The original, which covers 170-square feet of canvas and took over 10 years to complete, depicts the opening of the first Reformed Parliament in the House of Commons. Some 375 identifiable figures are captured in this portrait, including MPs, Whigs and tory peers. Today, it hangs in the National Portrait Gallery where it holds the title of ‘portrait with the most identifiable sitters.’ Brights of Nettlebed’s near-identical reproduction is displayed in a handmade English swept frame. Another example of a fine art reproduction at Brights is the portrait of Horatio Nelson. In this duplicate of a 1798 portrait by Guy Head, Nelson appears with a young midshipman moments after victory at the Battle of the Nile. Two battlescarred ships can be seen flying white ensigns in the background as Nelson’s companion hands him a sword wrapped in a captured flag. This reproduction has been stretched and mounted in reeded moulding. These are just two of the museum-quality commissioned pieces that Brights of Nettlebed

have in stock, which are replicas of important works dating as far back as the 15th century. The company is associated with a small studio of highly accomplished artists, each of whom has been specially selected for their technical skills and for their ability to faithfully replicate originals. Brights calls upon these artists for their bespoke ordering service, allowing customers to commission the oil painting of their choosing. Whether customers would like their own oil-painting reproduction of a classic masterpiece, photograph or personal family portrait, they are welcome to visit Brights of Nettlebed at their showrooms in Nettlebed, near Henley-on-Thames – where all of the existing paintings can be viewed in classically furnished rooms. The Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair 22-27 January 2019, Battersea Evolution, Battersea Park SW11
T
he Winter edition of The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair, the first of three taking place in 2019, will raise a glass to the new year when it opens in Battersea Park. More than 150 dealers from the UK and Europe will take part, bringing a beautiful variety of antique and 20th century design drawn from sources around the world. Find unusual interior decoration dating from the early 1700s to 1970, by designers and makers from the British Isles, Europe, Scandinavia, the Americas, Africa and Asia. The breadth of choice is unbeatable, encompassing furniture, lighting, textiles, ceramics and porcelain, glass, natural history items, architectural elements, and garden artefacts and seating. Works of art from all periods to the contemporary – paintings, prints and sculpture – are an important element in the mix.
The Cocktail Hour – Foyer Display Inspired by fashionable 1950s and ‘60s nightspots, with a touch of deco glamour, the Winter Fair will present as its foyer display, The Cocktail Hour – showing visitors how to create a contemporary space for parties or a modern club room vibe. The Cocktail Hour will incorporate diverse seating, side tables, lighting and decoration of all periods for a fresh look, beautifully accessorised with 20thcentury cocktail sets and antique drinking paraphernalia. Bar carts and trolleys are still enormously popular, and stylish examples will feature, alongside cocktail cabinets, serving trays, champagne buckets and glassware. All items in the Fair display come from exhibitors and will be for sale. 94 JANUARY 2019
Current Trends As well as the eco-friendly credentials of antiques, buyers can see how easily the rich, lived-in patina of antique wood can work with modern interior schemes, complementing both soft and rich colour schemes. The warm tones of wood also work wonderfully well with patterned wallpaper without distracting from it. Painted antiques continue to be a strong theme at the Decorative Fair; their popularity has continued unabated since the Fair launched in 1985 and made its name as the go-to event for decorative pieces, and in particular painted furniture. Dealers continue to offer an unparalleled mix of fine and rare pieces with original paint and decoration from the 18th and early 19th centuries, alongside more practical everyday items presented in what the trade terms “country house condition” (i.e. retaining an un-restored state) that have been well-loved over the years, and thus retain a lifetime of character.
Find Unique Accessories The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair is also the perfect place to find a wealth of accessories: mirrors of every style, lighting from antique to mid-twentieth century table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights, modernist ceiling lights and crystal chandeliers. The finishing touch is as important as the furniture and buyers love the choice of collectables often presented by dealers in an inspirational fashion on their stands. Enjoy delicious home-cooked food and baking at The Kitchen upstairs on the Mezzanine.
Two Fairs in One! Visitors to the Winter Fair can enjoy a double-event experience as LARTA The London Antique Rug & Textile Art Fair takes place on the Mezzanine throughout the week. SPARE ROOM
an opulent choice, he notes, while a neutral colour scheme is unisex, and pale tones open up a space visually and will allow any additional little touches, from cushions to decorations, to star.”
SUCCESS It might just be a handy space for visitors but there’s no need to ‘spare’ the style. Follow Gabrielle Fagan’s
guide to gorgeous guest rooms...
T
he guest bedroom - or ‘spare’ - isn’t necessarily the most well-kept room of the house. If you’re lucky enough to have one, it’s probably either a dumping ground or used as extra storage space most of the year - meaning a mad dash to clear the clutter when visitors are booked in. (Relax, we’ve all got our guilty spare room secrets!) Hosting overnight guests? Transform a neglected spare room into a space that’s inviting and stylish. Give it a little TLC, splurge on new bedding and perhaps a few fun - or luxury - little extras here and there, and you’ll have it looking (almost) as fabulous as a boutique hotel room, but with homely touches too. Follow these simple steps to styling the spare...
Turn up the heat
Sleep like a log “Many people have no idea how comfortable their spare bed is, so I always suggest you ‘road test’ it to discover any lumps or bumps or comfort issues,” says Helen Johnson, from The Fine Bedding Company (finebedding.co.uk), which sells a washable Spundown range, including pillows and duvets.. “A new mattress enhancer or topper may be all that’s needed, which is cheaper than replacing a mattress but can mimic a new bed feel. Next, check care labels on filled duvets and pillows to see if they can be machine-washed at home. Feather and down duvets and those without guidance labels need to be professionally cleaned. Finally, give pillows and duvets a good shake before dressing the bed,” she adds, “to even out the filling and return their plumpness.”
Introduce hotel chic It’s the little things in life that count, and kitting out a room with a few practical items - like a mirror, a side table, or an extra chair - can make all the difference. Guests will feel comfortable and cared for, almost like being at a hotel. “A pile of clean towels (preferably that have been given 10 minutes in the tumble dryer on the day guests arrive, so they’re fluffed up and fresh) tied up with ribbon will help create an inviting atmosphere,” advises Johnson. “Fill a ‘just in case’ basket with essentials, like mini-toiletries, a toothbrush, hairbrush, shower cap - things that are all to easy to forget in the rush of packing presents and clothes. Provide a spare mobile phone charger and your home Wi-Fi code written on a postcard as well.”
Wow with wallpaper “Adding a feature wall is an affordable and easy update that will certainly deliver a boutique feel,” says Alex Whitecroft from iwantwallpaper.co.uk. “Wallpapering just one wall is often easier and quicker than people think - it can definitely be done in a day, and there’s no need to worry about patterns not lining up at corners. Less paper also means less money. Guest rooms need to make people feel welcome and appeal to varied tastes, so choosing wallpapers that won’t overpower an overall design scheme is good advice. Metallics are 96 JANUARY 2019
“Under-bed storage allows for lots of extra space in a bedroom, and a storage pouffe is another solution. Make sure they contain spare blankets or extra throws, as people can feel colder in other people’s homes, and don’t forget spare pillows,” says Sue Brodie, head of creative design at holiday homes specialists Willerby (willerby.com), who also advises checking that the room’s windows can open and testing radiators to ensure they work. “All rooms, no matter what size, should have a focal point, as this anchors the space - normally the bed in a spare room,” she adds. “Use colour or pattern behind the bed, so that it’s not distracting or sleep disturbing, and minimise the clutter for a serene and balanced space.”
Spoil the spare “If a room isn’t regularly used make sure it’s well aired and add a room fragrance candle or diffuser,” advises Johnson.“A new lamp, cushion or rug can be all that’s needed to give a room a lift and provide a touch of luxury. It’s all about making people feel they have a sanctuary where they can retreat and relax as well as sleep.”

It’s all about adding depth of tones and comfort to this texture story. Don’t forget to add a scented candle - notes of cinnamon, clove and orange are seasonal - and play peaceful music. Top Sofa Trends for 2019 Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture Choice, shares 5 sofa trends that are set to be big for the upcoming season
Classic, simple shapes Minimalist furniture and decor has never gone out of style, and with the ongoing focus on mindfulness and the perennial chic of the signature clean Scandinavian aesthetic, this look is going to keep going strong in 2019. “It’s all about going back to basics, with classic and versatile designs,” says Rebecca. “The aim here is to create a space that’s pared back, yet thoughtful - think strong lines and structured silhouettes. For instance, a modern sofa in classic black leather will lend a cool, yet welcoming feel to the living room. The focus here is a strong centrepiece – go for simple yet bold shapes for a look that’s both classic and interesting. This will really shine when paired with eye-catching, contemporary décor. Opting for a leather finish lends a sophisticated look that’s both versatile and easy to maintain, making it a great foundation that’ll never go out of style.”
Natural textures and linen The movement towards natural textures and materials in the home is also about creating a welcome retreat from hectic, modern life. Whether it’s bringing greenery indoors or experimenting with wood finishing, this trend works across many styles and homes - from rustic and tropical to airy and Scandinavian. “The growth of natural fabrics such as linen reflects an ongoing shift towards sustainability,” says Rebecca. “Linen is a versatile, durable material, with both cooling and warming qualities depending on the weather. This makes it a great choice for a comfy, stylish sofa all year round, and as an added bonus, its signature finish creates both visual and tactile texture in a space. With its soft beige and oatmeal shades, a linen sofa pairs up well with elements like indoor plants, rattan and wood for a tranquil, relaxed vibe in the home.” 100 JANUARY 2019

Luxurious velvet Now for something entirely different - often considered the epitome of luxury and timeless style, velvet reigns supreme as one of the top trends this season. For this latest interpretation, velvet manages to be both retro and modern - think classic Chesterfield sofas updated in bold jewel tones, and modern sofas made cosier with this soft, gleaming fabric. “Velvet sofas are designed to make a statement in the living room,”says Rebecca. “A velvet sofa in a dark colour such as blue or red anchors a light, neutral room and gives it a dramatic contrast. When set against a darker background, such as a grey or black wall, it can add a luxurious, plush pop of colour.” “A stylish way to introduce colour and glamour to a space, this finish absolutely shines in an airy, casually elegant space, and also works when playing with darker tones for a punchy, transformative look,” Rebecca says. “In terms of texture, velvet beautifully complements other fabrics and finishes, such as knits and furs, making it easy to entirely change the look and feel of a space, depending on the rugs, pillows and other decor.”
Art Deco influence A look that has inspired countless home makeovers and DIYs, Art Deco returns with a chic new look for 2019 - and we predict that it is here to stay. “Colour and contrast are set to be key players in this modern revival,” Rebecca says. “This approach is a perfect way to highlight statement furniture such as Art-Deco inspired sofas – offset cool tones like grey against rich blues for a calm and chic interior.” 102 JANUARY 2019
“This trend also celebrates the notion that more is more when it comes to decorating, truly embracing maximalist tendencies. Pick out an Art Deco-inspired sofa with graceful curves and tapered legs for a polished look, before layering it with bold hues, prints, and finishes. The result is an space that’s full of personality, and yet will never go out of style.” “It’s easy for this look to get a little overwhelming, so it’s also good to start off in small doses through printed pillows, or wall art. The beauty of Art Deco is its ability to dazzle as an accent or as a full-blown theme – in smaller doses, it luxes up mid-century and modern Scandi interiors, but it also works for a high-impact, glamorous feel at home.”
Clever Detailing And lastly, details – they can define a trend or add a final flourish to a space. “With the enthusiasm for bolder looks on the rise, interesting details are definitely here to stay,” Rebecca says. “Elements like ruching and rolled edges give an extra boost of refinement to furniture especially sofas, highlighting fine workmanship and adding interest.” “A great middle ground between distinctive looks like the maximalism of Art Deco and Scandi minimalism, playing with a range of smart, stylish details is a clever way to spruce up an interior. A sofa with interesting details is a quiet statementmaker, a classic that will always stay chic.” “This trend is incredibly versatile and transferable across a variety of interiors – experiment with timeless classics like button-back cushions and brass legs, to modern touches such as contrasting piping and unique silhouettes.”

Its deep, rich colour tones provide a sense of indulgence and its size and drama creates an absolutely stunning visual. www.originalstyle.com 106 JANUARY 2019
Antique mirror bevelled wall tiles These tiles have an aged affect. A Victorian (brick size) Antique mirrored tile with a bevelled edge. These tiles can be used in any room in your house including the bathroom. They add sparkle and glamour as well as offer a useful reflective mirror surface. Although it can be used in the bathroom, we do not recommend its use in areas such as wet rooms or shower enclosures. They look great on their own or around mirrors or even mixed in a mosaic with other type of tiles. www.my-furniture.co.uk

Edit Residential over and above LONDON HOUSE
Edit Residential enjoy impressive success with its latest award winning development in St Albans
L
ondon House, an exclusive development of 11 private one, two and three bedroom apartments set on London Road, a desirable St Albans location, is a prime example of a truly successful new homes development. The unique development, created by Edit Residential, was sold completely off-plan without the developer having to commence full marketing. St Albans based Edit Residential created London House to showcase impressive design, quality of finish and attention to detail. Shane Aherne, Co-founder of Edit Residential, comments: “A key element of its success is that we challenged expectations by taking a precise approach in every detail to create a fully considered scheme. We believe this to be the best development in St Albans.
“Our ethos is to consider every element of a development down to the smallest detail” With all our projects we look to partner with industry leading consultants in order to make truly unique developments that are relevant to their context and local demand, rather than simply regurgitate the pastiche buildings that we all see far too often. On London House, we appointed interior designers SAY Architects to design the communal spaces with the emphasis on creating a boutique hotel feel, whilst also scoping the finishing palette for the apartments. We were also delighted to work alongside award winning John Davies Landscapes to design an exceptional garden which really takes the development to the next level. Our ethos is to consider every element of a development down to the smallest detail, which we hope is evident in the success of London House. The team believed we had created something special, but the amount of positive feedback from St Albans locals and new buyers really cemented our pride in the project. As St Albans residents ourselves we sincerely believe that we have raised the standard for future developments in the area. Edit Residential have gone above and beyond with a truly well thought out development. It is evident that a high level of thought has been implemented with bespoke features such as a builtin barbeque and separate firepit, individual storage sheds and garden allotments, instant hot water taps and Duravit fittings throughout. 112 JANUARY 2019
The apartments themselves have been created with the same in-depth consideration. Featuring trendy, sleek finishes, from the bronze external cladding and timber fins to the German matt black kitchens and a colour palette throughout that is timeless and elegant, ultimately enhanced by large floor to ceiling glazing which maximise natural light. London House is now complete. Richard and Angela Bird, the original landowners of the London House development, commented: “We had been looking to downsize for some time but we still wanted to stay in the same location. The opportunity to work with Edit provided us with the perfect solution, the exact apartment that we wanted in the exact same location. We also benefited from being able to have an input into the design and we are delighted with the finished article.” Edit Residential is now focusing on a range of other projects. “We are looking forward to ensuring all our upcoming projects are as successful as London House. We actively look to work with landowners to maximise the value of their land and our aim is to focus on creating innovative, strategic development across London and the UK.” comments Mr Aherne.
