FIRE UP THE GETAWAY CAR! LONDON CLASSIC CAR SHOW ExCeL London, 15-18 February 2018
THE DETAILS
T
elevision star and confirmed petrol-head Philip Glenister is to curate the special ‘Getaway Cars’ display at the 2018 London Classic Car Show – The capital’s biggest and best classic car spectacular. Famous for ‘firing up’ his Audi quattro as throwback DCI Gene Hunt in Ashes to Ashes – Glenister will be maximising his insider police knowledge to bring together this showcase of cars as chosen by notorious crooks to evade the law whether on celluloid or in real life. Vehicles already on the shortlist include a number of criminal classics such as the MK1 Transit van, Jaguar Mark 2, Sierra Cosworth Sapphire and, perhaps, even a Mini Cooper S as famously employed by Charlie Croker (Michael Caine) and his gang to escape from the Carabinieri di Torino in the original Italian Job movie. “We will take our inspiration from TV, films and real life,” said Glenister who also co-presents Channel 4’s motoring show For the Love of Cars programme. “These cars need to be quick, handle well and, of course, have lots of room in the back. I’m sure we’ll have an iconic red quattro exhibited somewhere at the show, but this display will be about cars from the other side of the law. It’s pleasure to curate at such a special car show and where better to celebrate getaway cars than in East London at ExCel. Fire up the London Classic Car Show!” The 2018 London Classic Car Show will once again feature a number of special displays focusing on classic icons from the past. Car Club Square is a welcome returnee. The country’s leading one-make clubs will be staging displays of their

favourite machines, with club members on-hand to discuss the merits of their chosen marque or model. Another feature to make a popular return is The Grand Avenue, a ground-breaking all-action roadway running through the very centre of the show and along which some of the world’s greatest classic road and competition cars will be driven. It means The London Classic Car Show is no mere a static exhibition but a living, breathing tribute to the automobile… where else can you see Le Mans winners, Grand Prix racers, classic supercars and century-old veterans in action in the centre of the capital? All those wishing to see the Getaway Car display, can take advantage of significant discounts on offer for those booking in advance.
If purchased now, adult admission costs just £25 (£30 on the door) and a range of upgraded Premium and Family Tickets are also available online. Tickets also include entry to the London Classic Car Show’s sister show Historic Motorsport International, which celebrates the UK’s leading role in all areas of historic motor sport. Full details can be found on the show’s official website – thelondonclassiccarshow.co.uk.

WINTER’S HEART
St. Albans composer Andrew James Johnson explores the full spectrum of human emotion through his authentic piano music.
L
ong-time St. Albans resident and composer-pianist Andrew James Johnson released his debut classical album Winter’s Heart at the end of last year. Developed over a number of years, the record took inspiration from his travels from the Californian coast and Hawaii to mainland Europe and Britain. Now a family man, Andrew has since settled in the Hertfordshire town but still makes time to travel the world and share his music: ‘St. Albans is wonderful place to live. There’s a great sense of community here and I can get some inspiration in a few minutes by walking in the tranquil surroundings of Verulamium Park.’ Born in Birmingham to a family of six, Andrew was brought up surrounded by a diverse mix of musical influences ranging from Elton John and David Bowie to classical composers Debussy and Beethoven. Later composition studies at the London College of Music led to music commissions in television, theatre and film, including campaigns for HSBC and Timotei.
18 JANUARY 2018
Now living in St. Albans with his American wife and young children, Andrew dedicates much of his music to his family. The track ‘Taylor’s Theme’ is particularly poignant, having been written especially for his partner as she walked down the aisle on their wedding day. It was, as Andrew says, ‘a moment in time that she could treasure forever.’ With compositional techniques rooted in authenticity, Andrew’s appreciation of the great Romantic composers is reflected in the emotive tracks of his album. The style of music is based on spontaneous feelings that arise from a connection to the natural world and its environment, with raw human emotions exposed at the heart of the listener’s experience: ‘The Winter of the title represents the stillness, clarity and purity of a natural, uninhabited environment. I’m hoping listeners will tap into their own emotional centre as they listen to the music and experience peace, calm, passion, tenderness and spirituality.’ Andrew’s music has an honesty and openness that reflect his life journey in both a meditative and truthful way, appealing to listeners of all ages. Winter’s Heart is out now on streaming services and Amazon UK. Visit andrewjamesjohnson.co.uk for more information.

Fit for a Queen The Royal Warrant holders
From piano tuners to opticians to a whip maker, the Royal Warrant holders belong to a very special club
T
he history of the Royal Warrant can be traced back to medieval times, when competition for Royal favour was intense and the Monarch had the pick of the country’s best tradespeople. By the 15th century, the Lord Chamberlain, as head of the Royal Household, formally appointed tradespeople with a Royal Warrant of Appointment – a practice that continues to this day. A Royal Warrant of Appointment – A crest that states “By Appointment To…” is a mark of recognition of those who have supplied goods or services to the Households of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales for at least five years, and who have an ongoing trading arrangement. The Monarch decides who may grant Royal Warrants. These are known as the Grantors: HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales. Today there are around 850 Royal Warrant holders representing a huge cross-section of trade and industry, from individual craftspeople to global multi-nationals. They are united by a commitment to the highest standards of service, quality and excellence. Almost all Warrant holders are members of the Association. There are silversmiths and jewellers, champagne houses and wine merchants, wheelwrights and gun-makers, glovemakers, luxury car manufacturers, tailors and kiltmakers - the kind of luxury brands befitting of a royal family who reside in palaces and castles. Some firms have a record of Royal warrants reaching back over more than 100 years. Warrantholding firms do not provide their goods or services free to the Royal households, and all transactions are conducted on a strictly commercial basis. Chocolatier Prestat was the last warrant

holder to be appointed by the Queen Mother - who loved their chocolate mint fondants and violet cremes - in 1999. To apply for a Royal Warrant, a company must have been doing business with the household for at least five years. If they are successful, they can advertise the fact by displaying the Queen’s coat of arms. “The Royal Warrant is the ultimate seal of approval,” says Roger Gadd of whip maker Swaine Adeney Brigg. “Our customers definitely take note of it, which is good for business.” But a Warrant also carries with it responsibilities. Beholders must exercise discretion, and make it their duty not to let standards slip. “Royal warrants don’t just cover what the Royal Family needs, but what a business needs, so there are agricultural and engineering service suppliers, as well as the technology that supports a large business,” says Richard Peck, secretary of the Royal Warrant Holders Association. BROCKET HALL’S NEW ERA Arts Club and Wine Club to Feature in Brocket Hall’s Lavish Relaunch
O
n 21st February this year, Brocket Hall simultaneously launches the Lady Caroline Arts & Entertainments Club and the Lord Byron Fine Wine Club, as additional opportunities within an already extensive portfolio of experiences which includes the new Estate Membership for businessmen and women. The clubs have been named after two of the most famous names to be associated with Brocket Hall - Lord Byron and his spurned mistress, Lady Caroline Lamb. As wife of the second Lord Melbourne, Lady Caroline Lamb (who introduced the Waltz to England in the Ballroom) scandalised society when she conducted a wild and tempestuous relationship on the estate with Romantic poet Lord Byron. This culminated in Lady Caroline’s public disgrace and her spirit continues to haunt Brocket Hall to this day. Estate Members are automatically granted honorary membership of the Arts and Wine Clubs. The Arts & Entertainments Club offers not just the chance to enhance understanding and

appreciation of Brocket Hall’s magnificent environment, but also a far wider selection of cultural events and entertainment. Arts & Entertainment Club members are invited to choose from an all-encompassing catalogue of events throughout the year. Club events include, but are not limited to; visiting exhibitions and shows hosted at Brocket Hall; talks and classes; priority access to galleries and openings; musical events, book launches with the many interconnected partner establishments. One of the first prestigious partners to work with Brocket Hall is the Cadogan Contemporary Gallery in Chelsea, a centre of artistic excellence for the last 30 years which constitutes an exhilarating start to the year’s programme. Arts Club members will be taken on a giftwrapped journey throughout all aspects of the art world, supported by expert guidance and if required, sound investment advice. Brocket Hall is also partnering with curatist, collectibles expert and art investments specialist Jiggy Rawal, who will share her extensive knowledge of the global art markets in her capacity as a professional ‘treasure hunter’. As well as staging a classic car event, Jiggy is hosting information workshops to discuss her long association with top jewellers such as Boodles and Fabergé with accompanying advice on gem sourcing and jewellery design. The Lord Byron Fine Wine Club builds on a grand old Brocket Hall tradition of enjoyment, sociability and a connoisseur’s appreciation of the best wines the world can offer. As well as conviviality and comfort, a member of the Lord Byron Wine Club enjoys access to wine tastings and sommelier selections as well as opportunities to attend wine estate tours, gourmet evenings to explore the perfect pairings of wine and food and investment guidance. ature, in all its purity and greatness, offers a new perspective on yachting that transcends the traditional parametres of status and grandeur. A holistic approach allows the yacht to directly reflect the Owner’s true values in life: the richness of being and the intimacy of belonging. Nature grants those on-board every opportunity to be themselves in an atmosphere of complete tranquility and peacefulness. The carefullydesigned spaces, the interplay between natural and artificial light, and the pure materials and surfaces combine to create a new world that represents all the good we recognise from nature. You’ll be forgiven for thinking that you’re in a five star hotel, because that’s exactly what it looks like. Due to the intelligent layout, the thoughtful routing and the fully-customised furniture, Nature is extremely functional while offering the most desirable yachting amenities, including luxurious

state and VIP rooms, a strikingly spacious Owner’s suite, luxurious spa deck, gym and a swimming pool at sea level. The essence of Nature is epitomised by the owner’s deck with a climate-controlled interior garden and retractable platforms that open to serve as semi-private beach clubs above the main deck. In addition, the forward space in the owner’s suite serves as an observatory for those who wish to search the stars without going out on the deck. The solid outer wall of the observation area retracts to allow the owner and especially fortunate guests an unobstructed forward view. A shining beacon of peace and tranquility, it also represents the fundamental interconnection between the yacht and her environment. It is nature within Nature.

the billionaire looking to further push the boundaries of yacht design with its next projects. “We always try to make a difference, to go a step further, to push the boundaries,” Sinot says. “I really don’t know what will be next, and that’s what’s exciting about this industry. Nature can carry up to 50 crew members to ensure that guests are well served. Crew accommodations include two double staff cabins, 18 double crew cabins, two triple crew cabins, two officer cabins, one first officer cabin, and the captain’s cabin. Design-wise ‘Nature’ looks like nothing that currently navigates the world’s seas and that’s a good thing because you’re bound to stand out in this floating mansion graced with svelte lines. The name of the yacht has duality in purpose: it is in reference to both human nature, and the way that humans interact with nature as environment,” says superyacht designer and founder of Sinot, Sander Sinot. “As designers, we are always fascinated by nature in its perfection, purity and greatness; nature offers endless sources of inspiration. But we have found that sometimes there is a strict distinction between nature and human-built structures and we wanted to break those boundaries. With Nature we chose a radically different approach through creating a design that blends into nature without conflict or competition.” It is anticipated to take four years to complete the Nature superyacht build with an undisclosed final costing. ROARS INTO LONDON Greenwich Peninsula, From 12th February until September 2018
A
brand-new multimillion-pound attraction that brings dinosaurs to life as never before is coming to London for the first time in February. A unique, immersive live adventure, it has played to sell-out audiences of tens of thousands in its debut season at Birmingham’s NEC. The show’s unique time machine will be set up on Greenwich Peninsula in London and will take families back an astonishing 67 million years to encounter amazing creatures like Tyrannosaurus rex roaming the wild. Londoners will be immersed in an unforgettable experience that, for the very first time, will make them feel as though they are actually there – amongst the dinosaurs, in their world, at their time. Dinosaur tourists are whisked by time machine to join scientists at an extraordinary research station – TimeBase 67 – which has been built on the Late Cretaceous plains 67 million years ago. On the ultimate voyage of discovery, they drive with their guides through lumbering herds of dangerous dinosaurs, watch a dinosaur autopsy, witness hatchlings emerging from eggs, plunge their hands into dinosaur poo, and visit a lookout, with panoramic views of the teeming prehistoric life in every direction. The Creative Director of Dinosaurs in the Wild, Tim Haines, was the award-winning producer of the

BBC TV series Walking with Dinosaurs, seen by 800 million globally. Tim says, “After the huge crowds for Dinosaurs in the Wild in Birmingham, and the anticipation we’re already seeing for our move to Manchester in October, we’re thrilled to announce that Londoners will now be able to time-travel too. It’s a completely new kind of immersive experience, in which we use the latest technology to make it feel like you really are there in that world, with the dinosaurs all around you.” Over a hundred artists, technicians and other industry specialists worked to create the unique experience. It weaves together high-tech audiovisual effects, animatronics and live-action theatre to allow visitors to experience the prehistoric world in a way that has never been possible before. The 70-minute adventure vividly reveals dinosaurs as they really were. Far from being green and scaly creatures, experts now believe that many were colourful and had feathers and fuzz. Dinosaurs in the Wild opens its doors in London on Monday 12th February 2018 on Greenwich Peninsula, just a few minutes from North Greenwich Underground station. Tickets to Dinosaurs in the Wild can be prebooked at www.dinosaursinthewild.com and start from £25 for Advanced Off-peak adult tickets and £85 for Advanced Off-peak family tickets (2 adults and 2 children).

ollowing the increasing demand for places at Edge Grove, the school was excited to extend its Nursery provision last September with the opening of a new state-of-the-art Pre-School in Church Lane, Aldenham Village. The new Edge Grove Pre-School offers a firstclass dedicated facility specifically designed for its youngest pupils. The purpose built co-educational Pre-School will be a safe and stimulating ageappropriate environment for ages 3-4 years and has space for 40 children. Located very near to the main Edge Grove site, it retains close links with the neighbouring larger school and provides regular visits for the children to the main Edge Grove school grounds. Edge Grove continually looks to innovate, offer a dynamic and unique curriculum and ensure that its pupils are taken to exciting and inspirational places. Learning environments in education are changing beyond all recognition today and the new Edge Grove Pre-School is no exception. Building work was managed by an experienced and highly creative Early Years designer, in conjunction with the school architects. Gone are the traditional classrooms filled with uniform tables and chairs and in their place are new cutting-edge learning zones, all inter-connected allowing free flow around the building, independent choice of activity for children and a bright and modern space that is both engaging and innovative. The outdoor areas have been carefully planned and developed to complement the indoor zones and
further enhance the children’s learning, creativity and independence. A mud pie kitchen, den building area, huge sand pit, covered stage and seating, climbing frames and balance beams together with a huge road fully marked with traffic lights and, garage and petrol station means that there is never be a dull moment! New polo pony sculpture is unveiled internationally
Charles and Abbe Elliott at British designer brand ‘Elliott of London’, have unveiled the latest editions to their new equestrian sculpture range.
Y
oung British sculptor Charles Elliott and his wife professional showjumper Abbe Elliott, have worked together to further their new luxury equestrian range. Initially working on a simplistic horse sculpture, 24 year old Charles has now pushed his skills and knowledge further to a new polo pony sculpture as well as a new race horse sculpture, both complete with tack and rider. Both pieces have a vast amount of detail and movement, created using a 8mm round material with a natural curving style. Handcrafted in their Buckinghamshire studio using traditional blacksmithing and modern metal manipulating techniques, their new equestrian sculptures are inspired by his wife’s love of horses. Alongside travelling the world jumping her string of horses professionally, Abbe has a lot of input into Charles’s design and building process of their equestrian pieces specifically. Charles says, “We decided we wanted to push our boundaries further by investigating into specific disciplines, we wanted to target individual aspects of the international equestrian world. My wife Abbe helps tremendously with details of muscle layouts and conformation, whilst we look through piles of close ups of horses in motion. She is very critical of our work and a perfectionist when it comes to the 38 JANUARY 2018
horses, whether it be in art or in real life!” Charles spends months, sometimes years, working on each of his pieces and have had a great response of its unveiling on their website and on facebook. Elliott of London Sculptures are available internationally, with transport shipping and installation services available worldwide. With interest and enquiries from New Zealand, US and Europe already, the initial unveiling of these one off pieces look to be a great success for The Elliott’s and their team.

Visitors to the show can come face to face with some of the top names in the industry. With cruise lines sailing to some of the most remote locations on earth, it can be overwhelming deciding which route is right. The London Cruise Show aims to connect cruise enthusiasts with their perfect cruise. There has never been a better time to jump on board! Adventure travel is taking the cruising world by storm as the trend seeps into cruise’s plush corner of the travel industry, but expedition cruising still retains the luxury element, so less backpacks and more five-star dining with a side of adventure. For those who love nature and wildlife and are itching to discover the destination they’re visiting, expedition cruises allow for more niche, experiential excursions such as hiking, kayaking, and personal encounters with locals. Exhibitor, Oceania Cruises, offers an adventure into the unspoiled wilderness of Alaska, where guests have the opportunity to experience dog sledding near Juneau, visit the Heritage Centre in Noonah where native Tlingit culture comes alive through song and dance, and cruise through glorious Hubbard Glacier. Azamara Club Cruises can take you to the Caribbean idyll of Cuba; steeped in history and culture and bursting at the seams with vibrant music and salsa dancing. Itineraries feature ports of call in Cienfuegos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Santiago de Cuba. To provide travellers with a truly immersive experience, Azamara Club Cruisers has created a variety of shore excursions offering guests the chance to explore from sunrise to sundown. It turns out, yes, the backpack really has taken off and, no, it’s not annoying at all - quite the opposite. Going hands-free is liberating, because it means you can charge around unencumbered and get stuff DONE (or spend longer wasting time on your phone with both hands available for tapping and scrolling). Productivity or procrastination: everyone’s a winner. With that in mind, here are 7 chic and simple backpacks that will go with just about anything, from winter coats to summer dresses. Looking for a practical bag that will carry you through the seasons in style? We’ve got your back.

Lose your double chin Gain a more contoured neck
Before
A
couple of months ago, a patient started telling me about a concert she had been to the night before. “It sounds amazing,” I told her. “Do you have any pictures?” “Angela” took out her phone, and started swiping. It took me a while, but eventually I noticed something strange. There were pictures of the band, of the crowd, and of the group of friends she was with. But absolutely none of her. “No….” she said wistfully, when I pointed it out. “I hate being in pictures. It’s my double chin…” Over the past few years, I’d heard similar comments many times from patients. The age of the selfie and Instagram is tough on many people who are self-conscious about some aspect of their appearance. But facial features like double chins can cause particular upset and anxiety. The result of genetics for some people and weight gain for others, double chins are very ageing, because they change the shape of your face. And they are so difficult to hide. “Polo necks just draw attention to my chin,” “Angela” told me. “I’ve tried loads of different haircuts, but none of them really made a difference. For a while, I tried standing at a particular angle when people took my photo – but I just couldn’t bear to see the results. “Now I’d rather leave the room. But my family has started noticing that I won’t be photographed, which is making me feel even worse…” Unfortunately, double chins are particularly hard to get rid of. They don’t always disappear with weight loss, and you can’t spot-exercise them away, despite thousands of Internet pages telling you otherwise. Until recently, the options with aesthetic medicine were limited to liposuction or fat-dissolving injections, which can be painful. The good news is that there’s now an easy, non-surgical solution. 50 JANUARY 2018
After
Fat freezing quite literally freezes your fat cells until they disintegrate – killing them off. Up until now, it’s been one of our treatments of choice for areas like love handles, backrolls and thighs, because it’s so effective at reducing stubborn fat that won’t disappear any other way. The problem has always been that the technology worked for large areas, so it wasn’t suitable for chins. But now, there’s a new double chin-busting device called the CoolSculpt Mini, which has been specially adapted to treat smaller pockets of fat, such as the area under the chin. Riverbanks is one of the first clinics in the UK to offer CoolSculpt Mini and we’ve been thrilled with it. Each session takes just half-an-hour, and you see results within three to four weeks. There’s no downtime – you can usually go straight back to work – and it’s non-invasive, with no surgery or needles involved. Best of all, because it’s not a new treatment – just a new area it can be applied to – it’s tried, tested, safe and effective. The investment starts from £1,500 for a single treatment and our patients who have already undergone the treatment are already enjoying slimmer jawlines. “My face looks so different - I feel like I’ve lost 10 years,” “Angela” told me when I caught up with her recently. “I’ve had a radical haircut, because I don’t have to use my hair to cover up a double chin more. I feel great!” I asked her whether she’s happier to have her picture taken nowadays. “I put up a picture of myself on Facebook, and got loads of ‘likes’,” she laughed. “I could get used to that….” If that’s the kind of result you’re looking for, hit ‘reply’ to find out more. Your double chin can be gone before the end of the month. Warm regards,
Ravi

Your Skin Reborn Beautiful Environ - Advanced Skin Care Treatments and Products “Reveal healthier-looking skin with the Environ Cool Peel”
W
e believe that skin has a life and that vitamin A is the “oxygen” it needs to look healthy and beautiful for life. It is for this reason that we actively pursue skin care science to skilfully and consistently develop best-in-class, scientifically researched and developed products that work with skin. Environ Skin Care is not sold online and there are no authorised online shops selling our products. Our unique and highly effective Vitamin STEPUP SYSTEM™ helps skin to become gradually more comfortable with increasing dosages of vitamin A and other ingredients. It is for this reason that Environ Skin Care products should only be purchased from trained and authorised Environ Skin Care Professionals. We believe that this approach will ensure complete consumer satisfaction as the power of our beautiful science always requires the consultation and product recommendation of a Skin Care Professional. 52 JANUARY 2018
The introduction of vitamin A into skin care formulations was a ground-breaking development in skin care. Dr Des Fernandes, rated amongst the top five plastic surgeons in the world, was a pioneer in this field in the 1980s. He was the first to use vitamin A in high enough doses that help counteract the harmful effects of the environment, pollution and stress, and create the appearance of radiant, visibly improved skin. Before starting on your vitamin A skincare journey with Environ, have your skin analysed by one of our Environ Skincare Professional. They will be able to determine what your skin needs and will recommend a course or Environ Professional Facial Treatments as well as a tailored skin care routine prescription. They will start you off on a low concentration of vitamin A and slowly move you up the levels of the Environ Vitamin STEP-UP SYSTEM™.This step-up is reflected within treatments as well as your home-care products.
Get your glow back with our Hydroboost Facial
“They have a product for everything and everyone, no matter what challenge you may have”
“Environ facials are packed with all the best ingredients for skin that’s in need of a boost” Aging Skin Everyone ages and that means that skin gets thinner and it struggles to retain moisture, causing wrinkles and fine lines. Even though you can’t stop the hands of time, you can certainly help to slow it down by reducing your exposure to the sun and the damaging effects of free radicals and not smoking for example. Ask your Skincare Professional about adding products from the Focus Care Youth+ Range to your daily vitamin A skincare routine.
Dehydrated Skin Dull, tired and rough looking and feeling skin is not a good look on anyone. When your skin can’t retain moisture and when your sebaceous glands become less active, it begins to flake and fine cracks appear. Dry skin is further compromised through exposure to changes in the weather and thing like how much water you drink in a day. Add products from the Focus Care Moisture+ Range to your daily vitamin A skincare routine if you want to give your skin a moisture-boost.
Sensitive Skin Some genetic factors as well as a number of different unavoidable environmental influences cause sensitive skin to break out in rashes and become itchy. The last thing you probably want to do is put something onto sensitive skin in case you make the sensitivity worse, but the right combination of ingredients will do the trick. For sensitive skin that needs some extra relief and comfort, ask your Skincare Professional about adding products from the Focus Care Comfort+ Range to your daily vitamin A skincare routine.
Skin Pigmentation Pigmentation is a tricky skin condition and there is no quick fix or easy solution. In fact, it is the toughest skin condition to improve. Pigmentation can be caused by your genetic predisposition as well as hormonal changes, and it can also be made worse by exposure to UV light which causes the formation of melanin – the molecule responsible for your skin’s colour. By adding products from the Evenescence Range to your daily vitamin A skincare routine, you will experience a healthy-looking complexion and radiantly even glow.
Blemish-prone Skin becomes congested and breakouts occur when the area surrounding your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. Hormone changes, stress, diet and other environmental factors can also result in skin that is blemish-prone. Ask your Skincare Professional about adding products from the B-Active Range to your daily vitamin A skincare routine for your skin to look healthier and more clear.

UPGRADE YOUR PONYTAIL WITH THESE CATWALK-INSPIRED STYLES By Katie Wright
P
onytails: The lazy girl’s answer to everyday hairstyling or a glam option for going out-out? We used to think the former, but then we clapped eyes on the AW17 catwalks and saw the humble hairdo in a whole new light. From polished perfection to crimped and voluminous, these ponies are anything but boring - and they’re easy to do yourself, you just need the right tools and techniques... The crimped ponytail ‘Rebellious’ was a major buzzword among hair stylists backstage at the shows, and GHD is tapping into the trend with the launch of a nostalgiainducing hair crimper. Party like it’s 1995 with this fashionably frizzy ponytail, created by Zoe Irwin, GHD brand ambassador: 1. Using a paddle brush, work hair smoothly to the back of the head, keeping in line with the jaw bone and tie with an elastic. 2. Spray hairspray on the palms of your hands and smooth over the surface of your hair. 3. Take a section of hair from underneath the ponytail and wrap it around the base to cover the

elastic, securing with a pin. 4. Taking thin sections of your ponytail, place the crimper at the top and clamp firmly for four to six seconds. Release and clamp again immediately below, continuing down the section. Complete this step on the whole ponytail using the same technique. 5. Brush through your ponytail using a paddle brush to soften the texture. 6. Lastly, spray hairspray on your fingers and tease out for added fullness. The super-sleek ponytail Mirror shine and not a hair out of place - that was the brief at Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta in New York (the city that basically invented the term ‘polished glamour’), with Eudon Choi and Shrimps following suit in London. Louisa Day, T3 UK brand ambassador, reveals how to get the look: 1. Prepare hair with a heat protector spray, blow-dry, then straighten, focusing most attention on midlengths and ends. 2. Using a tail comb, create a sharp centre or side parting. Brush hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck, ensuring the crown is flat. Secure with a band. 3. For an extra sleek look, work a small amount of smoothing lotion into the palm of your hands then smooth down flyaways. The imperfect ponytail Still neat, but more relaxed, and a little bit wispy, this ponytail - as seen at Jason Wu and Burberry - is the most versatile of the lot. “Enhancing your hair’s natural texture will personalise the look, making it unique to you,” says Holli Smith, New York Fashion Week ambassador for Tresemme, as she talks us through the look: 1. Starting with freshly washed, damp hair, apply a small amount of mousse and evenly distribute throughout the hair for control and added texture. 2. Divide the hair into four equal sections and blow-dry, making sure to leave the ends with their natural texture. 3. Create a middle or deep side parting that is not perfect and slightly messy, leaving out a few wisps to frame the face. 4. Brush hair back towards the nape of the neck to create a very low ponytail. Spritz with hairspray before continuing to comb hair back with fingers, minimising the appearance of perfectly brushed hair. 5. With your chin down, secure hair in a very low ponytail with an elastic. Finish by blow-drying out of the ends of the ponytail to elongate and volumise slightly. Spire Harpenden helped me climb Mount Kilimanjaro
I
t was set to be a father and daughter challenge of a lifetime for Annabel Richardson and her dad Paul as they planned to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. But when 57-year-old Paul broke his collarbone while touring in Italy with the Harpenden Raiders Cycling Club it looked like their climbing adventure might have to be put on hold. “We had booked a family holiday to Mexico for just five days after the accident and I didn’t want to let Annabel or my wife Nadini down so I put off any treatment hoping the bones might knit together naturally – they didn’t,” said Paul.
Mr Tony Corner is a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in Shoulder Surgery and is based at Spire Harpenden Hospital.
56 JANUARY 2018
So with the Kilimanjaro date of October 21 ‘set in stone’ Paul, a non-executive director, realised he needed an successful operation followed by a superquick recovery if peace was to be maintained in the Richardson’s Harpenden home! Following an MRI scan at Spire Harpenden Hospital Paul met with Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Tony Corner who told him that the collarbone was broken in three places and there were two other fractures near the shoulder joint. Mr Tony Corner explained that, ‘Mr Richardson had sustained a major injury to his shoulder. Although my general principle is to only consider surgery as a last resort it was clear Mr Richardson needed to undergo a reconstruction to optimise the long term outcome of his shoulder and to also win the race against time to help him climb Kilimanjaro. Fifteen-year-old Annabel, a student at Queenswood School in Hatfield, said: “I have to admit I was a bit cross with my dad when I first heard about the injury but I was determined to help him get through it all so I was right behind him as he worked hard to get back to fitness. “He only had ten weeks from leaving hospital until we started the climb so I was really proud of him when the doctor gave him to okay to climb just
a week before we were due to set off!” Sixteen-year-old Annabel, who raised £1,600 for the War Child charity, loved the climb although walking up to 14 hours a day in the freezing cold did test her limits – but it was all worth it when they reached the summit. “Sometimes we actually had to start climbing at midnight – in the pitch dark – and I did suffer a bit from being at high altitude but it was a case of slowly does it and eventually we reached the top,” she said. “It was a fantastic feeling, especially as we had built up such a great friendship with our fellow climbers. Everyone was smiling and hugging each other and although we were all exhausted we were all very happy.” As for Paul, he was full of praise for Mr Corner and the physiotherapy team at Spire Harpenden. He said: “It was hard work getting fit enough to start the climb and I admit I didn’t mention my injury to the team leader in case they tried to stop me taking part but the physio team gave me all the help I needed. “In the end I am so pleased we did the climb – it really was an unforgettable experience and I was so proud of the way Annabel handled the whole experience.” www.spireharpenden.com

Beat the winter blues...
Boost your happiness this winter Many people experience feelings of sadness, depression and lethargy once the winter months kick in, often due to the change in weather, the shorter days and long periods of being cooped up indoors. If the winter blues are starting to set in, check out these ways to boost your happiness.
GET CREATIVE ABOUT FITNESS Exercise is a great way to beat the blues as it releases mood-boosting endorphins and will also leave you looking great. However, many of us find our workout routine takes a hit when the cold weather sets in. To stay inspired to exercise through the winter months, try searching for something new such as an unusual exercise class or sport. If you can’t face heading out into the cold, find fun ways to exercise at home such as dance fitness DVDs. GET AN INDOOR HOBBY We often give up or postpone many of the activities we love when it gets cold. However, just because you are spending more time indoors, that doesn’t mean your interests and activities have to be reduced to browsing the TV guide for what’s on next. To keep your mind occupied and add some fun to your evenings, try taking up an indoor hobby for the winter. There are many to choose from, such as reading, writing, painting, growing indoor plants, baking or learning a new language. EAT MOOD-BOOSTING FOODS It is tempting to reach for comforting, stodgy foods during the winter; however, research reveals that regular consumers of fast food are 51% more likely to develop depression. Instead, try to fill your diet with nutritious healthy foods; particularly those rich in B vitamins, which help the brain produce serotonin; Omega-3 fatty acids, which can help lift depression; and vitamin D, which you may be short of in the winter months. PERK UP YOUR SOCIAL LIFE As some people retreat more indoors to the warmth of their homes, it can feel as though your social life has gone into hibernation, expect it is Christmas! Spending time with others can be one of the greatest mood boosters. You can’t always rely on other people to make plans, so if your social life
60 JANUARY 2018
could do with a boost, it’s time to get pro-active. Pick up the phone and make plans to spend time with friends and family. Alternatively, take up a hobby or join a club to find some new people to spend time with. LAUGH MORE OFTEN Laughter is an extremely effective mood booster, and studies have found that even the anticipation of laughter can help to lift our spirits and reduce stress. However, many of us don’t laugh nearly enough. While it may seem like a regimented approach to such a laid back and seemingly frivolous activity, try to make sure you dedicate at least 20 minutes a day to something that makes you laugh, such as chatting to a friend, reading a funny book or watching a funny DVD. LIGHTEN UP For many people, the lack of sunlight over the winter months can bring on strong feelings of depression and lethargy. To help improve these symptoms, try to make sure you spend as much time exposed to natural light as you can, leaving your curtains or blinds open, sitting close to windows where possible, and spending some time outdoors each day. It may also be worth investing in a SAD light box which can help to reduce the negative effects caused by the lack of natural light. TREAT YOURSELF To boost your happiness over the winter, it is important to make time for those little things that boost your mood. Make a list of the day-to-day things that make you happy – such as having a catch-up with a friend, having a scented bubble bath, or listening to your favourite song – and make sure you schedule one of these treats into every day. Planning regular treats not only gives you something to look forward to, it can also subtly improve each day.

Why fitting new thermally broken double glazing to UK homes is a no brainer
W
ith energy prices at an all-time high and set to constantly rise ever higher, even one bed flat owners in the UK will benefit from having thermally broken “A+” rated or even "A++w" energy efficient windows installed, especially when done in conjunction with draught proof, thermally efficient doors. The vast majority of 1st and 2nd generation replacement double glazed windows were not thermally broken, so although a big improvement at the time, there are now aluminium and UPVC double glazing products available that not only provide a thermal break between the inner and outer frames, but also a dramatic improvement in energy saving compared to non-thermally broken products. Consequently the larger a property, the greater the energy savings are going to be by having double glazing fitted, given it costs exponentially more to heat a premises the larger it gets. Nowadays, thanks to technological advances and better design, there is a range of genuinely “A+” rated fenestration products available that are far superior to old windows and doors. For example, many homes in the past were fitted years ago with silver anodised aluminium double glazing within hardwood frames, with some home owners subsequently reporting occasional condensation on the inside frames on cold winter mornings. This 64 JANUARY 2018
condensation can be caused by various factors, firstly often insufficient ventilation within a room and secondly by the fact the product does not have a “thermal break”. Nowadays most high quality aluminium windows have a polyamide thermal break between the inner and outer frames which prevents the external cold surface of the outer window pane meeting the warm surface of the inner window pane, hence why today you can purchase “A” rated thermally broken aluminium double glazing as well as “A+” rated UPVC double glazing.
“Hazlemere Window Company Ltd use a high specification of glass as standard in their sealed units and standard” Whatever material double glazing frames are made of, the other crucial element of an energy efficient double glazing system is the glass sealed units. Most energy saving windows need a sealed unit with a centre-pane U-Value (a measure of thermal efficiency) of about 1.2 W/m2K to enable it to achieve an overall energy rating of “A+” when combined with the gaskets and aluminium or UPVC window frames.
THE DETAILS
Consequently the glass sealed unit specification is critical to the overall energy performance of double glazed windows. In between the two panes of glass (usually each 4mm thick) is an air gap of 16mm to 20mm. These two panes are separated by a “WarmEdge” spacer bar to prevent thermal transference. This vacuum gap is then usually filled with 90% Argon or Krypton which basically helps retain warmth generated by the property’s heating system on cold winter days and helps keep out excess heat on hot summer days. Hazlemere Window Company Ltd use a high specification of glass as standard in their sealed units and standard. On the external pane they use a very clear low iron glass with no “green” colouring, which allows more light and heat into a room (Solar Gain). This clear glass reduces the amount of artificial light required, thereby saving on electricity bills. On the internal pane they use a high performance low emissivity soft coat glass, a product which has a special coating on the internal side of the inside pane, which helps retains heat that has been generated by the central heating system or by solar gain, or both! The soft coat glass used has a highly neutral appearance with optimal solar heat gain, thermal insulation and light transmission to provide the highest Window Energy Rating (WER) performance. The WER scheme is the UK Government backed method of assessing and ranking the energy efficiency of a complete window. Taking into account its U-Value, solar gain and air infiltration, the scheme allows straight forward comparison of the energy efficiency of different windows, with an “A++” rating being the best (triple glazed UPVC) and “C” rating being the minimum replacement windows must achieve.
To find out more about aluminium and UPVC thermally broken double or triple glazing, contact the independent experts at Hazlemere Windows on 01727 238658 who have over 30 years’ experience designing, manufacturing and installing replacement window and door products. Alternatively visit www.hazlemere.co.uk
This new minimum standard of energy efficiency came in on 1st October 2010 when revised Building Regulations make it a requirement that any property owner replacing one or more windows must comply with. The reality is that “C” rated windows are exceptionally thermally efficient when compared to first generation double glazing and single glazed windows, and provide a level of thermal efficiency that most UK house holders would give their right arm for, given the amount of energy they will save the property owners. Those with properties that have thermally inefficient windows and doors who want to future proof their homes against rising energy bills therefore need to replace their old draughty windows with modern energy rated double glazing. Given the additional costs of heating larger homes fitting technologically advanced replacement double glazing is an absolute no brainer.

There’s one colour that rises about the rest as tipped by interior designers for next year’s seasons, while also being perfect for winter decorating; red! Red is a brilliant colour to use in any space; naturally eye-catching it works particularly well with monotones, while also providing pleasing contrast against minimalist or traditional wooden settings. Red is a rich colour, providing a warm tone in winter or a lively attention-grabbing tone in summer. Great for feature furniture, or for complimentary additional furniture or accessories. www.noxuhome.com 68 JANUARY 2018

TIMELESS STYLE AT CELINE ESTATES Celine Estates headed by Director Noor Charchafchi is fast becoming one of the most esteemed London residential interior design firms. Noor’s attention to detail and focus on luxury service has distinguished her company and allowed her to excel in the world of residential interiors. Asking Noor about her preferred design style she explains that she she chooses not to pinpoint a particular style but a contemporary home that supersedes trends and is curated for each particular client until the space can truly be unique to them. Noor explains that working with her clients is the most important part of her business and a part of the business she relishes. Showcasing one of her recent prime central London projects shown she says, I feel flattered that the business gets the attention that it does but the real business is the passion for design and the realisation of our clients aspirations for their spaces. Celine Estates works alongside an in house architectural and construction team and she explains that she is therefore involved in every part of the design process starting from where it must necessarily begin with the architectural drawings and space planning. Believing in a hands on approach Noor explains that early entrance into the design stage always gives her team an incredible advantage and as she herself oversees every aspect of the project her clients really get full exposure to the woman who is fast becoming a permanent fixture on London’s interior design scene.

Eloquent Eastern Interiors WORDS: Anna Howell
J
apanese is a language with an innate lyricism and rhythm. It is the mother tongue of the Haiku, a tiny poem that in just 17 syllables promises to break your heart or instill some powerful universal truth. And just as the Haiku is soulful and sweet, so are the Japanese philosophies that are captivating the imaginations of designers and homeowners in 2018. Split into several distinct parts, Japanese aesthetics can be best understood through the creations of contemporary designers. While verbal translations can often lead to slippages in meaning, design manages to distill what words cannot, offering us an artistic way in to these elusive Eastern ideas. First up is the principle of Fukinsei, captured effortlessly by B&B Italia’s Tobi Ishi Dining Table. Fukinsei highlights the flawed, asymmetric beauty of the natural world, which is full of harmonious relationships that are contrasted yet balanced. The asymmetric proportions of this stylish dining table establish an arresting focal point, a moment of synchrony in a hectic, modern world. Its calming appearance inspires us to get back to the dining table with family and connect in whatever way we can, putting an end to dinners spent in front of the TV. The takeaway here is that complimentary things are rarely identical, and through the meeting of different personalities and styles, true harmony can be found. Datsuzoku asks us to transcend convention, claiming that only when a well-worn pattern is broken can true creativity and resourcefulness

emerge. We are all products of our environment, yet we don’t realise the stifling influence a poorly planned home can have on us. One man who set to break with convention was the Japanese sculptor, Isamu Noguchi. His eponymous Noguchi Coffee Table was designed in 1947 and eschewed traditional templates of what a modern table should be. Instead of the predicable four legs he created a mesmerising sculpted base with a freeform glass top. It has since gone on to become an icon of 20th century design, gifting style and sinuosity to homes all over the world. He proved that revitalizing your home with gorgeous design isn’t just about aesthetics. Surrounding yourself with furniture that surprises and delights is an excellent way to stay inspired and kick-start new routines. While each of the teachings offers a new lesson, they often overlap and interconnect, revealing a peaceful existence that is in stark contrast to our breathless Western lifestyle. Shizen translates to a desire to be ‘of nature’ yet somehow distinct from it, a concept that is eloquently expressed in Umut Yamac’s Perch Collection for Moooi. In a wonderful display of contemporary lighting design, several birds balance on a metal perch, free to swing when touched or blown. Their moving joints allow for a joyful interaction between user and object, one that is fleeting yet sweet. Available as a table, floor, pendant or wall light, each carefully crafted bird emits a serene gush of illumination, powered by ecologically efficient LED bulbs. In a world intent on moving ever faster, these Japanese philosophies ask us to rediscover a gentle joyfulness in our physical environment, trusting in the power of good design to dissolve into our everyday behaviour. n an exclusive partnership with Versace Home, the global symbol of opulence, AYKON London One brings you the ultimate in branded living experiences. Versace Tower is about to light up the multibillion pound Nine Elms regeneration zone, in the shape of a designer piece of property for those who love a label. Thanks to a collaboration with Italian fashion house Versace, 50-storey Aykon London One will be the glitziest tower on the block. The £600million tower, dubbed the ‘Jenga tower’ because of its appearance, is due to open in 2020. A studio can be bought for £747,000, with onebedroom apartments from £1,116,000, and twobedroom flats from £1,877,000. As the floors start to rise, so do the prices. A top-floor duplex would set you back £13 million. Choose from studios to one, two and three bedroom arrangements, finished to the highest standards, with special ‘winter gardens’, offering stunning panoramic views of the city. Even the

chandeliers in the residents’ lounge are gold-plated filigree, while “V” for Versace Home is in marble patterns inlaid into the walnut floors at the entrance to each apartment. For their money, buyers certainly get plenty of Versace branding in their homes. The style house’s trademark Greek key decorates splashbacks, kitchen islands and mirrors in the white marble bathrooms, while master bedrooms are decorated with lavish amounts of pale gold-and-cream Versace wallpaper. Residents will enjoy in-house dining, a concierge, a cinema, a state-of-the-art gymnasium plus a luxury swimming pool and spa - all tricked up in Versace’s trademark maximal style of opulent colours and fabrics. Even the children’s playroom has a patchwork Versace carpet in primary colours, plus a double-height yellow slide and designer chairs. Each of the building’s outdoor spaces will be unique, with its own focal sculptures, water features and landscaping aesthetic, all complemented by stylish furniture and specialist lighting. Nine Elms is already home to the New Covent Garden Market, the brand-new US Embassy and Battersea Power Station, a cherished feature of the London skyline. It’s also blessed with almost two miles of Thames river frontage, and will be lined with cafés, bars, restaurants, cultural attractions and public space as part of the planned regeneration. Since construction work on “Versace Tower” began in August, 170 of its 360 homes have sold. Unsurprisingly, many overseas buyers have taken the bait, from the Gulf States, Hong Kong, Russia, Iran and Pakistan. Developers have come under fire for selling highly priced flats at Nine Elms to overseas buyers before addressing the British market. www.aykonlondonone.com
