t this time of year we celebrate the festival of love and desire. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to tell a loved one how important they are to us. If you are looking for a ‘something special’ to express how you feel about someone then why not use the power of art. Love is the influence behind many masterpieces and the inspiration for many artists such as Fabian Perez, Doug Hyde and Anna Razumovskaya to name but a few. We are excited to announce Russian figurative artist Anna Razumovskaya will be gracing the doors at Gallery 1066 on Wednesday 27th January! This is a RSVP event so please contact Gallery 1066 to reserve your place on the guest list. £2.5 million National Lottery boost for Museum and Gallery project

T

he Heritage Lottery Fund has backed the St Albans Museum and Gallery project with a massive £2.5 million grant. The money, combined with a previous £300,000 award, will provide around a third of the £7.75 million cost of the scheme.

Robyn Llewellyn, Head of HLF East of England, said: “This ambitious redevelopment project will create a ‘onestop shop’ - celebrating local heritage and culture - right in the centre of St Albans. “This will provide a much-needed boost to both the local economy and tourism and provide a wonderful opportunity for people to explore the wider history of this beautiful city. “As we approach next week’s 21st anniversary of the National Lottery, it’s also fitting that we thank National Lottery players for helping bring this vision, with heritage at its heart, one step closer to realisation.” It was the second major decision made within the same month late last year. The other decision was the scheme being recommended for planning permission, change of use and Listed Building consent by the Council’s Planning Referrals Committee. That recommendation has been sent to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Greg Clark, for consideration. He is due to announce his decision by mid-January. If his approval is given, construction work could start as early as Spring of next year with the Museum and Gallery scheduled to open in autumn 2017.

We are both delighted and honoured the Heritage Lottery Fund is giving this flagship City project its prestigious backing Councillor Annie Brewster, Portfolio Holder for Sport, Leisure and Heritage for St Albans City and District Council, said: “We are both delighted and honoured the Heritage Lottery Fund is giving this flagship City project its prestigious backing. “We want to create a fitting cultural beacon right in the heart of our City for all to access freely. In 1831 The Town Hall and Courthouse was built for public use. “We are now well on our way to creating a new landmark museum and art gallery with three floors of galleries and exhibition space for residents and visitors to enjoy.” 28 JANUARY 2016

The scheme to convert the Town Hall, a Grade II* Listed Building, into a new museum and gallery is intended to rejuvenate the cultural life of the District. It has been in development since 2012 in a partnership between the Council, St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust and the University of Hertfordshire The overall cost will be £7.75 million with the Council committed to providing funding of £3.3 million. St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust, a registered charity, is leading efforts to raise £1.7 million with the HLF now providing the rest of the required finance.

Introduce A Unique Platform To Sell Your Home

We speak exclusively to Haashim Rifai and Kamran Chaudhry, the founders of EMOH

A

new start-up company designed to create an online property marketplace and provide an alternative to the traditional method of buying and selling houses through estate agents has been set up by two young North Londoners. Kamran Chaudhry and Haashim Rifai have set up EMOH which brings the whole process of buying and selling property together in one place. The service avoids the need to use an estate agent and is free to list. Rifai and Chaudhry, who have spent the last year developing EMOH, have created a platform that is both intuitive and simple to use enabling homeowners to easily upload their properties, manage viewings and sell their homes through the site without the need to involve an agent. They are also in the process of allowing rental properties to be uploaded and advertised to potential tenants. Rifai explains, “The traditional method of selling houses through high street based estate agents is archaic in the modern world, since 98% of people begin their search online before getting in touch with an estate agent. It is our opinion that there is no one better to sell a home than home owners themselves. “With estate agents fees ranging from 1%-2.5% around the country, the saving is not insignificant, especially in London where the average house price is now approaching £500,000, meaning that a home owner would be liable for fees of between £5,000 and £12,500 + Vat at 20% to move. EMOH guides the home owner through the sales process providing tips and advice on how best to market their property as well as offering an affordable range of optional services including professional house photography (£99), valuations (£19.95) and an EPC,

photos and floor plans for just £249 (plus vat) – the maximum outlay to facilitate the marketing and sales process. Rifai concludes, “With the arrival of the Internet, people booking a holiday now go directly to the provider and as a result travel agents have largely disappeared from our high streets. I think the same will happen to estate agents in the future. In fact, it is estimated that by 2020 almost half of residential property sales will be conducted online.”

Why did you start EMOH?

We felt that there was a need for a real alternative to using estate agents as a method of buying and selling homes. We believed that the large fees charged to pay for their services should be challenged as they can no longer be justified in this day and age. As almost all house searches start online it makes sense to use the Internet to complete the process. We also believe that the best person to sell your house is you, and hence we’ve created a platform to allow you to do so.

What makes EMOH different from online estate agents?

We’re an online marketplace which allows homeowners to advertise their properties, unlike Zoopla or Rightmove which only allow estate agents to list. We offer a platform that places the control in the hands of the buyers and sellers and puts them into contact directly. We do not charge any commission or listing fee and encourage buyers and sellers to take control of the whole process.

How does it work?

The platform is purposely built with simplicity in mind, from the registration process which can be done with your Facebook account, to the listing process which can be completed in ten easy steps. All you need are photos of the property, a floorplan and an EPC and your home will be published in minutes for free! If you do not have any recent or good photos, EPC or a floorplan we can arrange to provide them for you.

What does it actually cost?

Nothing! If you already have pictures, EPC and a floorplan you are ready to go and upload your property without having to pay anything, even when you sell. In fact, with the money you’ve saved you could treat yourself to a luxury holiday or buy some furniture for your new home! 32 JANUARY 2016

The area, to be named the ‘Peter Rabbit™ Adventure Playground’ will be 1,400 square metres in size and aims to encourage active, imaginative and wholesome play for children. It will have ten activities themed around the worldfamous and much-loved Peter Rabbit characters, including the Mrs Tiggy-Winkle Kitchen, a Jeremy Fisher Musical Pond and Benjamin Bunny Treetop Adventure. We aim to help children learn through play, and every aspect of the Peter Rabbit Adventure Playground will encourage each child’s development and creativity in a fun, engaging way.” Peter Rabbit has recently been brought to the next generation of fans on the CBeebies channel by Silvergate Media, co-producers and global licensing agent of the hit CGI animated TV series. Is your tummy out of control?

I

f you’ve been overindulging and your tummy is something you want to hide under baggy tops rather than show off with skinny, tight-fitting clothes, you need to know about Vanquish ME. There are plenty of ways to reduce excess fat around the stomach including the surgical tummy tuck and the much less invasive Vaser Lipo. Non surgical options include CoolTech fat freezing to reduce spots where fatty deposits are sitting. They’re all great ways to solve the problem of getting rid of localised areas of fat and apart from a tummy tuck we’re able to offer any of these solutions. Now there is Vanquish ME and it’s an exciting step forward for many reasons. It has all the advantages of Fat Freezing in that it’s noninvasive and has no downtime. But it can treat larger areas and can treat the whole stomach area from hip to hip. The equipment never actually touches the skin – it hovers over the area being treated. It has virtually no side effects and over a period of time a series of treatments will reduce the volume of fat significantly.

Is this an alternative to dieting?

As a doctor I always recommend a healthy eating regime should be the basis for your lifestyle and removing fat and continuing to overeat just means that the fat will come back. However, sometimes a kick-start is a good way to get your motivation moving and start to feel better. If you’ve gradually accumulated a podgy middle, this will help to get you back in shape. A typical patient is no more than 20lbs over their ideal weight, but as you know when a large proportion of that 20lbs is sitting around your middle it’s demoralising – and it’s although not good for your long term health. Vanquish ME is a fantastic way to get rid of muffin tops, love handles, flabby ab area and to create a defined and curvy waistline and tighter tum. It’s great for belly fat reduction for men and creating a slimmer stomach for women.

How it works

Quite simply the device generates a high frequency energy field that targets the excess fat using thermal waves to break it down. Over four to six weeks, with a weekly treatment, the excess fat cells are destroyed while the skin

and other tissues are protected. It’s not painful – most patients report it feels a bit like a hot stone massage and is very relaxing. Patients from Harpenden, St Albans and Luton are all happy to visit our clinic on the Hertfordshire / Bedfordshire border for their weekly treatments – no sedation or anaesthetic needed! It’s almost as good as going for a weekly massage – with the added benefit of knowing your fat is disappearing. The results aren’t instant, but over the course of treatments there will be a noticeable reduction in fat volume. There are a couple of secrets to ensuring you get even better results too: Drink more water – before and after each treatment, it will help your body to flush away the fat cells and hydrate the cells in the area being treated. Walk more – not only is it a good way to burn a few extra calories and ensure you keep your new svelte figure, but if you walk after each treatment it helps in the process of fat break-down. Each session is just 45 minutes so you’ll be in and out in less than an hour – so whether you want to: • Get back into a smart little black dress that’s a size smaller than you are currently • Look good on a beach holiday • Wear fitted gym kit • Get rid of that spare tire that just makes you uncomfortable • Stop having to hide in baggy clothes Give us a call on 01582 762877 and book your treatment. ake-up artists wielded eyeliner like a weapon, with everything from the classic cat-eye flick to the Sixties ‘floating’ liner getting a fresh new-season remix. These bold looks may take a bit of practice, but the pay-off will be so worth it. Steady hands at the ready, it’s time to toe the line...

BE PREPARED

At Giamba, the youthful off-shoot of Giambattista Valli’s main line, make-up artist Val Garland daubed tattoo-like designs around models’ eyes using black eye pencil. The stars, hearts and musical notes might be a bit much for everyday wear, but Lily Donaldson’s sharp Z-shaped tick is totally achievable with Pur Minerals Double Ego DualEnded Eyeliner in Madagascar, £14, FeelUnique.com.

Like any artistic endeavour, preparation is everything when it comes to perfecting your liner look. Primer is essential for creating a blank canvas; a smooth, oil-free surface to which colour cosmetics can cling. Benefit Air Patrol BB Cream Eyelid Primer, £21.50 contains SPF20, which we often forget about on our eyelids (www. benefitcosmetics.co.uk). If you need a more tailored shade, Artdeco 3 in 1 Eye Primer, £11.60, Debenhams, comes in cool or warm tones (www.debenhams.com).

WINGING IT

Already perfected the cat-eye flick? Then why not take it up a notch with wider winged liner, as seen in teal on the Antonio Berardi catwalk and black at John Galliano. “Unlike the classic flick, for this look you’re going to start with the wing,” explains make-up artist Lisa Potter-Dixon, author of Easy On The Eyes. “Draw a line from the corner of your eye, angled upwards towards the end of your brow. The longer this line, the more dramatic the look, so go as far as you dare. From the tip of this line, draw back towards the centre of the eye, but stop as you 44 JANUARY 2016

The most extreme interpretation of the Sixties throwback floating liner came at Rochas, where dense, black curves sat way outside the upper and lower lashlines. The cartoon panda look isn’t for everyone, but Felder Felder’s softer take is much more accessible. Start with a wash of neutral eyeshadow over the lid, then trace a crescent above the crease using Eye of Horus Goddess Pencil in Charcoal Obsidian, £15, BeautyBay.com. There’s no need to be really precise, because afterwards you’re going to gently smudge and blend the line with a brush like the Bobbi Brown Dual Ended Eyeliner/Smokey Eye Liner Brush, £31, to give a more lived-in look (www.bobbibrown.co.uk).

The bigger the better was the mantra at House of Holland - thick black brushstrokes were plastered across the eye crease - and at Dior, where neat ovals of khaki, brown or plum extended almost to the eyebrow. O

nline beauty tutorials are a big business these days, generating billions of views and turning amateurs and teens into celebrities (on the internet at least). But in YouTube’s upper echelons, there’s one notable exception: Lisa Eldridge was anything but an amateur when she started uploading how-to clips back in 2009. By that stage, the make-up artist, who grew up in Liverpool, had already racked up more than 15 years’ experience in the industry, adorning the faces of celebrities and supermodels for red carpets and cover shoots. Her staggering client list includes everyone from Kate Moss to Kim Kardashian West (she’s currently responsible for Kate Winslet’s looks while promoting the new Steve Jobs film) and Eldridge has held numerous Creative Director roles at major brands, including her current post at Lancome. As if her schedules weren’t jam-packed enough, Eldridge has just published her first book - but it’s not just a rehash of her most viewed videos. “Everyone expected me to do a how-to book, so I didn’t want to do that,” she laughs, perched in the haberdashery department of Liberty, as a queue of young fans snakes down a stairwell nearby, eagerly awaiting Eldridge’s appearance for a Q&A and book signing session. “The history of make-up has always been a passion and I wanted to scratch that itch.” Face Paint: The Story Of Makeup chronicles cosmetics throughout the ages, from the earliest uses of red ochre in prehistoric times, through to the latest high-tech innovations.

“My dream is that anyone who reads it, the next morning when they pick up their make-up bag, they’ll look at it in a whole new light,” Eldridge says, revealing that writing the book gave her a whole new appreciation for the freedom we have today, compared to times when make-up was seen as sinful. “Look at this time we’re living through,” she says, gesturing animatedly around the room. “All these women have got whatever make-up they want on today and no one’s criticising them.” It’s clear to the 41-year-old that being a feminist and owning a dozen red lipsticks is not a contradiction. And with her YouTube videos, Eldridge is able to engage with a huge audience (she has more than 1.2 million subscribers) to find out what women really want to know about make-up. So what’s the burning question she gets asked most often? “There’s a couple. They’re usually about skin make-up because people often struggle with foundation. Either they can’t find the right shade to fit their skin tone, or they’re not really sure how to use it with concealer if they want to cover their spots.” Well, Eldridge clearly has the answer, because she claims to have four spots when we speak, but all I can see is flawless skin. And her blemish-banishing video is her most popular of all time, heading for three million views. What you won’t find on this pro’s YouTube channel are the shopping ‘haul’ videos so beloved of teen vloggers, detailing their latest pharmacy finds. “Because I’ve been involved in new product

development for years, when I go shopping here, I tend to know which factory it’s from, or which formulation,” she explains, “so it has to be different, it has to be a colour that I haven’t seen before, that’s the sort of thing that will really stand out to me.”And to make it into her mammoth makeup kit is even harder. “I’m quite scathing,” Eldridge admits. “I don’t want to get caught out doing someone’s make-up on the red carpet and it doesn’t look good, so I really test new products out before they go in the kit.” So what are her tried-and-true treasures? The beauty guru spills the beans on her can’t-live-without cosmetics...

ith the broad range of products available from Herts Bifold Doors and parent company G&N Windows, there is a glazing solution for every home. In this case the Anthracite grey aluminium frames against the white Monocouch render, seamless aluminium cladding and glass balustrades look contemporary and clean. The idea being that the dark frame colour draws your eye through the glazing and to the view, more than you would find with conventional window colour. Not only can the frames be manufactured in grey aluminium, G&N Windows are also able to offer UPVC frame in Anthracite grey at great competitive costs. For this build, focused on the rear of the property Herts Bifold Doors supplied the bifold doors, gable frames, angled windows and casement windows. Together with the sales and surveying teams the clients were able to ensure the design, angle and configuration of every part of the glazing complimented the interior room plans. Downstairs in the kitchen and living room area the 6 pane Schuco bifold doors have been configured to open in the center as a french door would. Why having A+ or A++ energy rated replacement windows fitted pays

W

ith ever increasing energy bills, it is more important than ever that UK homeowners replace inefficient windows and doors in their property with thermally efficient ones. Having said that, to ensure a property gets the full benefit from an investment in double or triple glazing property owners must also insulate the loft properly and install cavity wall insulation or solid wall insulation dependent on the type of house and manner of construction. The seemingly never ending increases in the cost of energy, climate change, when combined with environmental and sustainability reasons, makes the need to insulate dwellings essential, although there is no getting away from the fact that there is an initial investment required to achieve long term savings. For home owners planning on moving rather than improving, there is still the need to sell their particular 56 JANUARY 2016

premises, as houses that still have single glazed windows are not only expensive to heat, but also unattractive to modern day buyers. Shrewd prospective purchasers will demand that the asking price is reduced by at least the cost of carrying out replacement double glazing and fitting insulation throughout, along with no doubt a premium off the asking price for being the ones “being made to carry out this essential work. When it comes to selling up, poorly insulated homes are inevitably shown up by the Energy Performance Certificate that all UK house owners are legally obligated to provide to prospective purchasers. Genuine high quality energy rated replacement windows and doors help a property benefit from solar gain, retaining heat whilst massively reducing the amount of energy lost. They do this by not only have thermally broken frames (be they aluminium, composite or UPVC), but also by being professionally fitted in the first place, and by having a high double glazing

specification involving Low E Argon filled sealed units with warm edge spacers (which help prevent transference of temperature) and specially coated low iron glass that maximizes solar gain whilst stops the heat escaping. The energy savings over time from fitting the highest possible energy saving windows that are “A+” or “A++” energy rated will be significant, so will over-time pay for

available in double glazing and triple glazing), sliding sash windows, Georgian windows and coloured aluminium windows, the latter of course available in any RAL colour (i.e. any colour you like!). Modern thermally broken “A+” rated UPVC double glazed replacement windows are naturally incredibly thermally efficient, highly secure and triple glazed ones are available in the same profile, so aesthetically very attractive as well. Alternatively “A” rated

The very latest thermally broken products are far far more energy efficient that 1st and 2nd generation double glazing themselves, assuming the home owner continues to live in the property. The sheer choice of bespoke replacement windows can be baffling, but as long as an independently certified “A+” double glazed or “A++” triple glazed energy rated window system is selected from installers with a good reputation, one cannot go far wrong. There are different types of window and finishes available to suit any type of UK property. These include aluminium, timber and UPVC casement windows and tilt and turn windows (both

aluminium double glazed windows and doors have a slimmer profile, therefore do offer more glass and light, as well as better views, and of course more attractive sight lines. The very latest thermally broken products are far far more energy efficient that 1st and 2nd generation double glazing. So much so that the levels of performance are vast enough that the BFFC (British Fenestration Rating Council) in 2015 introduced the new higher energy efficiency bands of “A+” and “A++”, with “A” rated having previously been the most energy saving. Whichever energy rated fenestration product a property owner chooses, fitting replacement “A+” energy rated double glazed windows or “A++” energy rated triple glazed windows is a must for any property owner determined to reduce heating bills by the largest amount possible, whilst at the same time improving home security, adding value to their home and improving their day to day living environment. The buildings themselves are highly thermally insulated using sustainable wood-fibre board that not only reduces heat loss but also gives protection from overheating in the summer months. The building construction is highly breathable and vapor permeable protecting the building fabric and providing a naturally healthy living environment. Heating is provided via underfloor heating linked to a highly efficient gas-condensing boiler.

The latest in German technology from Moneyhill Interiors by Celia Warbrick

W

inter is always an exciting time in the kitchen calendar - all the major German kitchen manufacturers open their Factories and showcase their latest designs inhouse in various different locations. Whilst all the manufacturers are dependent on various manufacturing factors such as new veneers, and carcase materials, they are also desperate for the latest in technology for such boring components as hinges and soft close mechanisms that we just take for granted now. I simply love the new designs from Pronorm, combining the lacquers and laminates in subtle colours ( that you never grown tired of ) with stunning oak and white glass units. The use of pocket doors whilst not a new invention have become very sophisticated and glide with ease and the new interiors from Pronorm show just how easy it is to be totally organised in the kitchen. The versaltity of designing with a German range is also reflected in the price. It is possible to achieve the same design look and indeed colour using a door finished in a coloured laminate for a fraction of the price when using a high gloss lacquer. Concrete laminate doors for example are also proving that you can have texture and colour without blowing the budget. Although the kitchen has always been at the centre of family life, it has now also become the dining room, study and TV area all into one. The fact that all the food storage, prepping and cooking also takes place means that design needs to be simply tailored to individual needs. A couple with no children or animals have very different needs to a family with children. Its really lovely that so much can be stored away such as coffee machines, toasters and blenders,

leaving clutter free worktops. It is also possible to hide away Ovens, Steam Ovens and Microwaves with specially designed cupboards that bleep if machines are left on and the doors closed.

Are you facing another winter with Cold, Draughty or Leaking Windows?

D

oes your home have ageing metal windows? If so then the thought of another winter like last year is probably sending shivers down your spine already, not to mention the rising energy costs of trying to keep your home warm. Now is probably the best time to do something about it before the cold weather really hits in the New Year. The Heritage Window Company has been manufacturing and installing slimline aluminium windows for 20 years with innovative concepts to deliver unparalleled performance. The new Heritage Conservation range with its unique ultralow profile frame has been carefully developed to replicate traditional style steel windows, and provide all the benefits

mean they can be customized to almost any requirements, and the tough powder coated finish means they are virtually maintenance free. You can choose from over 200 colours – even opting for different colours inside and out to suit your home’s décor. The Heritage Window Company takes its reputation for quality products and customer service very seriously – the company employs its own team of trained craftsmen and all installations are monitored throughout the contract to ensure the highest quality standards. Proof of just how successful this formula is are the many customer testimonials which can be viewed at their showrooms, and this relentless focus on customer

Slimline aluminium replacement windows save on energy costs and preserve the appearance of your period property of double glazing, without compromising the character of a period home. Heritage Conservation windows not only offer better thermal performance – having achieved an ‘A’ performance rating and a 1.6+ U value – but satisfy all the latest building regulations for replacement or new build applications, and multipoint shootbolt locking provides extra security as well. Managing Director, Sean Ballard says: “One of the great advantages of Heritage windows is that they fit into existing timber subframes which dispenses with the need for redecoration. Should the subframes need replacing, our craftsmen can reproduce new timber frames matching the original profile.” The windows can also be fitted direct-tobrick or stone. Many customers have a specific idea of what they want, so all Heritage windows are bespoke and made to order in its London factory. A range of styles and glazing options 66 JANUARY 2016

satisfaction and quality product has clearly paid off. “We get people writing in every week, talking about how pleased they are with their new windows and the care and attention to detail of our fitters. In fact, a large proportion of our business comes from existing customers or referrals, which is encouraging” says Sean. As energy prices continue to rise, the cost of heating your home is only going to increase. Heritage’s energy efficient windows employ a ‘polyamide thermal resin break’ to reduce condensation and argon-filled double-glazed sealed units to ensure more of the heat stays in – helping you keep those heating bills down. AWARD-WINNING DESIGN

L

ocated on the north side of the island, in a less developed part of the grand cayman called rum point drive. Nicolas tye architects were appointed to build a new build on the sandy long stretched site between the public road and beach. On the 0.69 acre site now is a contemporary and luxury one off family home built to set a landmark for rum point, enhancing both the local area and island in general. Rum point house was to be ultra contemporary therefore it was important that the building would sit harmonious alongside the surrounding area and within the site next to the sea; The house was designed to give an impression of floating, like a boat at sea. The design also needed to comply to the current regulations and be hurricane, storm surge and efficient in longevity of lifetime materials to the specification to make this a robust and well thought through build. The entrance elevation is solid, closed from views from the public road and with an open entrance area. Side walls are angled at 11.5 degrees to create overhangs for design aesthetic and solar shading purposes. The extravagant house has a roof terrace as party deck with a covered bar and lounge area allowing for panoramic

views around the island and sea, as well a vanishing edge pool located to back of the building next to the beach. The southeast facing elevation is mainly solid to protect from the sun, but the north-eastern elevation is open to the beach allowing for unspoiled views towards the sea. In recognition to the impressive design Rum point has already won two awards: Caribbean Property Awards 2015- Architecture single residence Governor’s Award for Design & Construction Excellence in the Cayman Islands- 2015- Joint winner.
