THE FABULOUS WORLD OF DIOR: A

UNIQUE EXHIBITION AT

Until 3rd January 2023

Initiating a captivating encounter between the different customs that brighten the festivities - from the City of Light to the English capital, Dior has conceived a unique, unprecedented exhibition – which revisits the tradition of gingerbread houses and specially designed for Harrods.

The exhibition reproduces the architecture of Dior’s emblematic locations – from Granville to La Colle Noire and 30 Montaigne – in reduced proportions. A fantasy universe, entirely composed of finely crafted cookies, punctuated with arabesques and delicate drawings, an expression of the audacity and art of detail so important to the House.

Playing with optical effects and dimensions, this work – both miniature and grandiose – calls us to rediscover the landmark places within the history of Christian Dior.

From the garden of his mother, Madeleine Dior, in Normandy – to the dream workshop where he drew his first fairy-tale dresses; and on to the ateliers where the collections were created, this enchanting promenade invites you to contemplate, as the light changes from break of day to nightfall.

It is a gingerbread Monsieur Dior who is thinking about the future silhouettes he will fashion. Further on, he tries his hand at embroidery – while in the perfume atelier, a scale model of the original Miss Dior dress comes to life, echoing the first Dior fragrance that has now

attained cult status.

HENRY MOORE: Drawing in the Dark

The largest collection of Henry Moore’s coalmining drawings ever exhibited, at St Albans Museum + Gallery

The largest exhibition of coalmining drawings by celebrated artist, Henry Moore, will be shown this December at St Albans Museum + Gallery - eighty years since they were completed for the War Artists’ Advisory Committee (WAAC).

Moore is famous for his sculpture, particularly of women and abstract forms, and his drawings of Londoners sheltering from the blitz in 1940 are also well known. But it is often forgotten that Moore was the son of a miner from Castleford in Yorkshire, and as a war artist he developed a detailed series of drawings from sketches he made in 1942 at Wheldale Colliery where his father had worked. Moore spent one week in the mine drawing from observation and then worked from memory to create the remaining drawings, which were all completed within six months.

Curated by University of Hertfordshire Arts + Culture and played out within the theatre of the dark-walled, subterranean Weston Gallery of St Albans Museum + Gallery, the timely exhibition takes inspiration from the new book, Drawing in the Dark by art historian, Chris Owen.

Inna Allen, Head of University of Hertfordshire Arts + Culture, says:

“This discrete body of work, consisting of

over 100 drawings will be showcased alongside sculptures and other works-on-paper. Visitors are invited to journey from quick pencil sketches, through developmental drawings, finished pieces and finally to later works inspired by Moore’s coalmining experience. Drawings from the four coalmining sketchbooks will be represented to demonstrate a range of techniques including pencil, ink and wax.”

The drawings not only demonstrate the backbreaking labour which nearly 3/4 million miners endured daily, as they made their vital contribution to Britain’s war effort, but they also reveal new insights into Moore’s life and artistic process. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see the leading British Modernist sculptor afresh, through drawings, notes and a rare choice of subject matter.

Annabel Lucas, Audience Development Manager at St Albans Museums, says:

“It is thrilling to bring such a remarkable collection of drawings and sculptures by Henry Moore to St Albans. We are delighted to unite so many of the coalmining drawings to appreciate their intensity and poignancy, and to reflect on their significance within Moore’s wider oeuvre. Through the pages and pages of development sketchbook drawings, the exhibition offers us new insight into the working practices of Britain’s greatest modern artist and invites us to look afresh at Moore as a sculptor.”

The new book, ‘Drawing in the Dark: Henry Moore’s Coalmining Commission’, published by Lund Humphries, explores every aspect of the WAAC’s commission; from Moore’s return to his childhood home and the challenges associated with ‘drawing in the dark’ to the significant influence of the project on Moore’s later work, including the Warrior and Helmet Head sculptures, and his little-known illustrations to W.H. Auden’s poetry. It features previously unpublished imagery from the Henry Moore Foundation’s archives and its launch will coincide with the exhibition.

Chris Owen, author of ‘Drawing in the Dark’ and former head of Cambridge School of Art at Anglia Ruskin University, says:

its funding support to the many lenders involved including the Henry Moore Foundation, the Henry Moore family, the British Museum and the National Coalmining Museum.”

Together, the exhibition and book aim to reveal the importance of this very personal project for understanding Moore’s life and work. Whether you’re new to Moore, a lifelong fan or take an interest in coalmining and World War II, this exhibition offers discovery, excitement and contemplation.

“It is hard to imagine what it must be like, to ‘draw in the dark’, as Henry Moore did in a Yorkshire coal mine for a week in 1942. Representing miners emerging from the dusty darkness was a real challenge. And add to that, the physical discomfort of working 1400 feet underground in conditions which Moore himself described as ‘like hell’. This exhibition will reveal how Moore tackled these difficulties. The resulting drawings are both powerful and haunting.”

Sebastiano Barassi, Head of Henry Moore Collections & Programmes at Henry Moore Foundation, says:

“The Henry Moore Foundation is delighted to support this comprehensive and long-overdue presentation of Henry Moore’s coalmining drawings. These powerful images of ‘Britain’s Underground Army’ at work express some of Moore’s deepest creative concerns. As a subject, the coalmine allowed him to indulge his fascination with black and darkness while creating images with the subtlest colourist qualities. With their rare focus on the male body and the figure in action, the coalmining drawings represent one of the highest expressions of Moore’s sympathetic gaze on humanity. As he himself reminded us, ‘without the war … I think I would have been a far less sensitive and responsible person if I had ignored all that and went on working just as’…”

Councillor Allison Wren, Vice-chair of the public realm committee of St Albans City and District Council and lead councillor for museums says:

“We are delighted to be the first gallery in the UK to focus specifically on these remarkable drawings. It is a fantastic collaboration, and we are extremely grateful to Arts Council England for

Paddington at the Palace

Paddington Bears have been photographed around royal residences ahead of the Queen Consort donating more than 1,000 teddies to the Barnardo’s children’s charity.

Camilla attended a special teddy bears’ picnic at Bow Nursery, which is run by the charity, and she personally delivered the Paddingtons and other cuddly toys that were left at royal residences as tributes to the Queen following her death in September, to Barnardo’s children’s services.

The teddies had been left by members of the public outside Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle.

The Royal Parks, Buckingham Palace and Barnardo’s released a video documenting the bears’ journeys alongside photos of different Paddingtons enjoying their stay at Buckingham Palace and Clarence House.

One shot shows a bear sliding down the bannister of an ornate staircase while another pictures a bear picking out a Paddington book from a shelf full of books.

Paddington film cast members Hugh Bonneville and Madeleine Harris, and Paddington author Michael Bond’s daughter Karen Jankel for whom he wrote the original stories, also attended the picnic.

It comes after Camilla was pictured surrounded by teddies in a photo taken on October 13 to mark the 64th anniversary of the publication of the first Paddington Bear book.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee sketch in the summer saw the Peruvian bear visit Buckingham Palace for afternoon tea, during which the Queen produced a marmalade sandwich from her handbag.

It prompted mourners to leave teddy bears

and even some marmalade sandwiches among the floral tributes which amassed outside royal residences following her death.

In 2016, the Queen passed the patronage of Barnardo’s to Camilla, who was then the Duchess of Cornwall.

Barnardo’s chief executive Lynn Perry said: “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was Barnardo’s patron for over 30 years, and we are honoured to be able to give homes to the teddies that people left in her memory.

“We promise to look after these bears which will be well-loved and bring joy to the children we support.

“We are incredibly grateful to Her Majesty The Queen Consort for her support in helping us to raise awareness of the needs of vulnerable children and young people in the UK so that we can continue to support them through our vital services.”

Tom Jarvis, director of parks at the Royal Parks charity, said: “Over the last few weeks we have been looking for a fitting and appropriate use for the hundreds of teddy bears that were left in Green Park and Hyde Park to honour the Queen.

“We are delighted that the teddy bears will now bring joy and comfort to hundreds of children supported by Barnardo’s.”

Buckingham Palace said the teddies were being “well looked after” at the palace, Clarence House and in the Royal Parks nursery in Hyde Park.

Revival Productions is delighted to announce Classic Ibiza’s return to Hatfield House on Saturday 19 August 2023. Tickets are on sale today for the family-friendly concert in the beautiful grounds of one of our country’s best-loved Treasure Houses.

50,000 people up-and-down the country partied to the Balearic-infused sounds of Classic Ibiza last summer and demand for next year’s tour has been strong, with some venues already at over 50% capacity. Revival Productions’ Lisa Ward, who promotes Classic Ibiza, says: “We’ve been inundated with enquiries about our return to Hatfield next summer, so I’m delighted to confirm that we’re back! The venue has always had an extra-special place in our heart and that’s largely down to the vibe that our amazing Hertfordshire audience brings to the show.”

Classic Ibiza ‘23 will once again be headlined by the Urban Soul Orchestra, who have performed

with dance music greats, including Groove Armada, Nightmares on Wax and Robert Miles. The five hour concert sees USO re-united with DJ Goldierocks, globally renowned vocalists and for the first time at Hatfield House, former Pacha Ibiza resident, DJ Jose Luis.

Lisa Ward adds: “We performed 15 completely new tracks this year in an orchestral set of over 30 house classics and definitely upped the ante in terms of the visual impact of the show. Our challenge, and one that we love, is how to take the concert to yet another level. What I can say at this stage is that you can expect a host of new tracks, more additions to the musical programme and some visually stunning effects. All that’s missing is the party vibe… I’m sure our Hertfordshire audience will oblige!”

Car-parking is free and there are no booking fees. You can bring your own food & drink, chairs and even tables! Street-food vendors and the San Miguel Bar are also available on site.

Cédric Grolet Unveils A New Afternoon Tea At The Berkeley

The menu evolves and changes with the seasons but for Autumn, Grolet features the chef’s iconic vanilla flower, a Paris Brest, a pistachio cookie and, for a purist English nod, a scone with cream and jam. The sweet piece de resistance is a glistening trompe-l’œil green apple which, inside, features fresh apple and dill. The savoury goodies are Grolet’s highly intricate take on avocado on toast and a trompe-l’œil burrata which reveals tomato gel and basil pesto when cut open. A mini comté cheese and bacon quiche, warm from the oven, is bought to table mid-service to complete the savoury offering.

LOCKED ESCAPE ROOMS

together and we all enjoy the escape room experience. We knew we would work well together and set up the business almost 3 years ago. The three of us bring different skills to the venture and we opened our first site in Dunstable, followed by Luton and now St Albans.

Why did you choose St Albans?

St Albans is a great city with lots of families and people who like to be active, but there was a lack of indoor activities. We did our research and realised the escape room model would be a great asset here. We now employ amazing staff at the site who are fantastic at bringing each experience to life.

What are your future plans?

What is an Escape Room: An escape game is a reallife experience where participants are “locked in a room” (but not really because that’s illegal), and must use elements of the room, the group’s collective knowledge, and wits to solve the mystery or escape. They discover clues along the way to solve puzzles, all within a set amount of time of 1 hour. Don’t worry, because you always have a dedicated games master helping your team if you get stuck. We’re some of the most immersive escape rooms in Beds and Herts in terms of design and levels of difficulties. Think Crystal Maze meets Money Heist.

Prices start from £22 per person, depending on the size of the group. We also offer gift vouchers so if you are stuck for a present and are looking for something a little different, get in touch. Our party/corporate room is just £25 an hour to hire.

What makes escape rooms different/unique?

You just need two or more players. There are always people that are good at different puzzles so everyone can play their part. We like to think of it as a bit of a theatre show and players only know what is involved once the curtain rises. The anticipation is exciting, and the games master helps immerse the players into the experience. If players get stuck, they can ask for a clue

Every player gets to use their own powers of observation and problem solving. We create real drama as players feel they are IN the situation they are trying to solve since our rooms are themed to the nines. There is always panic, tension and laughter, plus a sense of achievement if they solve the mystery in time.

Who are your customers?

It’s a real mixed bag. The beauty is that it transcends age. It can be played by anyone around aged 12 years and older. A few weeks back, we had a team where the average age of the players were 72 years old - anyone can give it a go!

This means adults can come for an afternoon of fun, or children can bring their friends or even have a birthday party with us. We even have a meeting room which functions as a corporate team building room or as a party room.

How did Locked Escape Rooms begin?

The Co-Owner Josh Carr says “I set it up with my two best friends. We wanted to start a business

We have lots of ideas for 2023 and beyond. We may open more rooms in new locations, as there aren’t too many in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, and we will refurbish our existing rooms to create more amazing experiences at our current sites. We are growing all the time so watch this space! lockedescapes.com

NURTURING INTERESTS AT HERTFORD BARNS DAY NURSERY

Set against a backdrop of rolling fields where children point out hot air balloons overhead and wave to farmers passing by on their tractors, Hertford Barns Day Nursery provides the perfect space for children to thrive in countryside surroundings.

At the newly refurbished setting on Cole Green, days are filled with exciting activities, planned around the personal interests of children and designed in line with Early Years Foundation Stage principles to ensure they are prepared with the knowledge and skills needed for their next steps.

Inside the stunning barn conversion and stable block, spacious classrooms are home to stimulating learning spaces, state of the art ICT, toys and equipment, messy play stations, ‘role play’ areas and purpose-built facilities including a children’s shaker style kitchen for cooking and baking activities.

Here pre-schoolers can design their own menus and showcase their culinary skills, all whilst learning basic mathematical concepts through weighing and measuring, as well as the importance of good nutrition to healthy lifestyles. From fresh fruit salads to healthy pitta pizzas, children beam with pride as they serve and enjoy their creations, which they make using produce they have grown themselves in the picturesque gardens outside.

As well as tending to an array of herbs, fruit and vegetables the whole year round, children of all ages are able to immerse themselves in a

curriculum of eco-activities, including crafting with natural materials and creating habitats for wildlife, as well as impressive bug hotels for insect observations.

With primary school application deadlines approaching in January, Hertford Barns also boasts a comprehensive school readiness programme. Covering topics ranging from self-care to phonics, pre-schoolers can practice fundamental skills such as using cutlery and writing their names.

Devoted practitioners are also keen to ensure families are supported in these key areas and provide bespoke resources, including a series of books published by Childbase Partnership professionals, as well as exclusive access to the ‘Childbase at Home’ website, filled with online books and masterclasses to ensure children are confident and independent learners, ready to embrace school life. Hertford Barns is taking children from six weeks to five years.

SARUM HALL SCHOOL RECREATES YAYOI KUSAMA’S OBLITERATION ROOM

Room has been such a fun and immersive experience for our girls. We’re extremely proud of achieving our Artsmark Silver Award and we are committed to delivering a high-quality arts and cultural education. With our very own Obliteration Room, and all our other wonderful arts initiatives, we aim to increase knowledge, curiosity and appreciation for the arts which will remain with our pupils into their adult lives.”

ABOUT SARUM HALL SCHOOL

Sarum Hall School, an independent girls’ prep school in London’s Belsize Park, has recreated Yayoi Kusama’s obliteration room in a playground hut.

Many of the school’s pupils visited The Obliteration Room at London’s Tate Modern this summer which was the largest iteration of the famous Japanese artist’s immersive art piece.

Inspired by the installation at the Tate, Teaching and Learning Assistant Emma Neath, worked with the School’s young Art Ambassadors to create a smaller version in the playground of the School.

Children were invited to go into the whitewashed room and stick colourful stickers all over the space which resulted in an explosion of colour.

The School was awarded Artsmark Silver status earlier this year. The Artsmark Award is the only creative quality standard for schools, accredited by the Arts Council England. It supports schools to develop and celebrate arts and cultural education, putting creativity and wellbeing at the heart of the curriculum.

Miss Karen Coles, Headmistress at Sarum Hall School, says:

“Having our own version of the Obliteration

Sarum Hall School is an independent girl’s prep school in London’s Belsize Park. Christmas Cracker event attracts crowds to the City Centre

St Albans Christmas Cracker – the funpacked event that launches the District’s festive season – attracted thousands of people to the City Centre.

The annual street party took place on Sunday 20 November with St Peters Street closed to traffic.

The entertainment included live music, a Santa’s grotto, funfair rides, face painting and street performers.

There were also scores of market stalls selling takeaway food and drink as well as seasonal gifts.

The Christmas lights provided a seasonal backdrop with pyrotechnics on the main stage ensuring a dramatic finish to the day.

St Albans City and District Council organised the Christmas Cracker which is sponsored by St Albans BID.

Councillor Danny Clare, Lead Councillor for Events, said: “I was delighted that so many people turned out for this fantastic occasion.

“The Christmas Cracker is a wonderful way to start the festive season and the response from our residents and visitors was tremendous. The rain did not put them off from coming in huge numbers.

“The Cracker gives a much-needed boost to our local economy – our shops, pubs and restaurants –by bringing many extra visitors to the City Centre.

“There was great input and creativity from local community groups and performers, and it was great to see so much local gift items, food and beverage on show.”

St Albans BID sponsored the main stage and pyrotechnics. BID manager Vivien Cannon said: “The Christmas Cracker was a great fun event which we thank the Council’s events team for delivering.

“Our family of shops, packed full of unique and inspiring gifts, will hopefully have an excellent festive season following the event - much needed during these challenging economic times.

6 DECEMBER 2022 77

With 1st Jan fast approaching when many people like to kick off the new year with healthy habits in mind and a new routine involving getting back, beginning or doing more exercising, I say yes, that’s a great idea although when it comes to setting goals, not going full pelt into a morning run, followed by a gym session and evening yoga, as this, in most cases is not sustainable. Too much too soon will often end in set backs which are hard to come back from. So when it comes to setting goals, have the end goal in mind which may look like the former but work backwards so you start with smaller, achievable goals which are much more sustainable and can progress towards that end goal.

I work with women who want to get strong and feel good. I specialise in postnatal exercise and my online group programme will be opening for enrolment in February 2023. I also offer live classes in St. Albans for women and personal training from my home studio in St. Albans.

Winter skin advice from HARPENDEN SKIN CLINIC

Although the craziness of Christmas has started, it is still just as important that we are all looking after ourselves, especially with indoor heating and low air humidity drying out our skin. It is vital to take more of a gentler approach when it comes to your skin and its regime, and Harpenden Skin Clinic has got you covered.

Skinceuticals H.A Intensifier and Triple Lipid Restore.

Now with the colder temperature upon us, moisture levels depleting and less oils being produced within the skin during the winter months, it comes as no surprise that keeping the skin hydrated is so important. Amplifying the skin’s natural barrier with ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Lipids and Ceramides are the perfect solution for maintaining plump and dewy skin.

Skinceuticals Vitamin C and Antioxidant serums and ZO Skin Health Daily Power Defence. Our daily surroundings can make a huge impact on our skin and especially if you are on more of the sensitive side. The powerful benefits of an antioxidant should be a top priority to surviving the winter with capabilities of elevating stress on the skin keeping it resilient, as well as providing a radiant and youthful appearance.

Skinade and Aethern. Weatherproofing your skin from within by intensifying the skin’s natural collagen production

with the use of drinkable collagen supplements. Reinforcing and hydrating the barrier of the skin promoting healthier skin from the inside out.

Hydrafacial and Skin Peels.

The best skincare combinations for GLOWING SKIN

NIACINAMIDE AND VITAMIN C

Shah-Desai also recommends combining niacinamide and vitamin C.

She describes both as “powerful” antioxidants, saying vitamin C can have “a whitening effect on pigmentation and dark spots”, while niacinamide “enhances the prevention of pigmentation, [and] improves the whitening effect on brown spots”.

Dr Sabrina™ Perfect 360 Eye Illuminate, £90

The world of skincare is a crowded one, and it can be difficult to know what ingredients will give you the best results.

If you really want your skincare routine to work hard, it’s all about choosing the right combinations. “Combining ingredients means you can simultaneously treat and protect at the same time. This in turn can increase the effectiveness, which will then deliver greater and faster results,” explains aesthetic oculoplastic surgeon Dr Sabrina Shah-Desai (drsabrina.co.uk).

“Combining ingredients increases the effectiveness of the ingredient – certain ingredients work very well together, which gives enhanced results.”

Whether you layer individual ingredients or choose an all-in-one is up to you. However, ShahDesai urges you to make sure “the formulations are compatible and do not negate each other or irritate or aggravate skin”.

Plus, pre-formulated products have a few extra benefits. “Some people prefer products that have combined ingredients as they are easier to incorporate in a regime, do not negate each other and are sustainably packaged,” she adds. “Remember that using too many products can actually damage the moisture barrier and or cause other skin conditions (such as inflammation, redness and blemishes).”

If you’re looking to boost the effectiveness of your skincare routine, these ingredient combinations are a match made in heaven…

NIACINAMIDE AND SALICYLIC ACID

“Both of these ingredients have anti-ageing and anti-acne effects,” says Shah-Desai. GP and aesthetician Dr Ahmed El Muntasar (theaestheticsdoctor. com) also loves this combination.

“The salicylic acid, which is a chemical exfoliant, helps to get rid of any spots (whiteheads, blackheads) and gets rid of the top epidermis,” he says. “Then the niacinamide comes in and hydrates and nourishes the skin underneath, so it doesn’t get irritated.” e.l.f. SKIN Blemish Breakthrough Triple-Acid Resurfacing Serum, £14; Skin Proud Rise and Defend Kombucha Face Wash, £12.95

VITAMIN C AND VITAMIN E

If you’ve got products with vitamin C and E but you’re not layering them up, you could be missing a trick.

“When combined together, vitamin C and E enhance the effects of each other and give fantastic results,” explains Shah-Desai.

“When applied topically, vitamin C is a powerful skin booster. It improves the appearance of your skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, repairs damage done by UV rays, stabilises collagen and gives dull skin a luminous glow. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory

properties, and combats free radical damage by preventing oxidative damage to cells.”

Wild Science Lab Juice Boost Brightening Serum, £38; Cetaphil Rich Night Cream, £5.32 (was £7.99), Superdrug

RETINOL AND HYALURONIC ACID OR PEPTIDES

Retinol is a powerful ingredient beloved by beauty buffs for reducing the appearance of fine lines, but it also comes with its issues – namely, the dreaded ‘retinol uglies’, when your skin reacts negatively to the product. Potential side effects of retinol include “redness, irritation and dry skin”, says Shah-Desai.

That’s why she likes layering hers with hyaluronic acid, saying it “helps to lessen the potential side effects of retinol… Hyaluronic acid is renowned for its ability to hydrate the skin, it

helps the skin hold onto water, which hydrates the outer layers of the skin.”

To combat the potential side effects of retinol, Muntsara recommends applying a peptide on top. “Retinoids help shed off the top dead layer of the skin, and then what the peptide will do is repair the skin underneath, helping to maintain a nice, healthy skin barrier,” he says.

Dr. Brandt Triple Active Retinol Overnight Renewal Cream, £59; Lacura Multi-Peptide Moisturiser, £6.99, Aldi; Q+A Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum, £6.50, Sephora

“Retinoids help shed off the top dead layer of the skin, and then what the peptide will do is repair the skin underneath”

SPF AND VITAMIN C

Applying vitamin C before SPF in the morning is a genius idea, according to Shah-Desai, as it “will help protect the skin from UV damage and free radical damage.

“Vitamin C helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, slows down skin ageing and reduces the appearance of brown spots.” The order is important here – make sure you apply vitamin C first, “to get the best benefits of these products combined”, she says. Muntasar is also a fan of this combination, saying: “Vitamin C gives you that daytime brightness and antioxidants for a nice glow, then the SPF on top of it protects your skin. There is some research that potentially shows that a good quality vitamin C oil might make your SPF work even better.”

FACE MISTS

From toning to tanning, these skincare sprays will enhance your complexion, says Katie Wright. When temperatures soar and you can’t escape to the seaside or for a dip in the pool, a quick spritz of facial mist is a handy hack to help you cool down – especially if you keep it in the fridge.

Not only are these blasts of refreshment a delight on sticky days, a beautifying spray can work wonders for your complexion when used in the morning or evening.

TONING

Ideal for oily or combination skin types, a toning mist nourishes the skin without clogging pores. Apply after cleansing and follow with an oilfree moisturiser for a perfectly primed matte base.

Neutrogena Clear & Soothe Toning Mist, £5.99, Boots

SUN PROTECTION

If you find sunblock too heavy or greasy, swap your usual lotion for a light-as-air mist that can be applied on top of make-up. These highfactor sunscreen sprays are also great for topping up throughout the day.

Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Fragrance Free Sunscreen Face Mist, £8.99

BRIGHTENING

HYDRATING

Every beauty buff knows that hyaluronic acid is a must for helping your skin to retain moisture. In a mist formula, you get those all-important acid molecules plus a big hit of hydration.

Pip & Pod Blueberry Tonic Face Mist, £9, Holland and Barrett

MAKE UP SETTING

More than just a foundation fixer, the next generation of setting sprays can actually be used under make-up as a primer, plus they offer an extra-dewy finish and some even provide SPF protection too.

Givenchy Prisme Libre Prep & Set Glow Mist SPF45, £36, Escentual; Pur Lit Mist Illuminating Setting Spray, £19

SOOTHING

Give parched summer skin some TLC and tan-prolonging hydration with a soothing aftersun spray. Look for moisturising ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil or sunflower seed oil.

Sun Bum Cool Down Hydrating After Sun Spray Aloe Vera and Cocoa Butter, £12.79, Boots

If a bright, healthy complexion is what you’re after, a mist packed with antioxidants should be top of your shopping list. Vitamin C in particular is renowned for its glow-giving power, with experts recommending you use it in the morning to prevent oxidation during the day.

Trilogy Vitamin C Energising Mist Toner, £19.50; Natura Siberica Anti-OX Wild Blueberry Moisturising Face Mist Toner, £8.49

TANNING

Perfect for topping up your tan post-holiday (because your face tends to fade faster than your body), a self-tanning spray adds a burst of moisture and a healthy glow that develops in a few hours.

CUCUMBER FIELDS

ZenCycle - where cardio fitness meets mindful yoga

I set off on a 30-minute tour of the senses, cycling though breath-taking scenery of the Nordic mountains (provided by large wall mounted screens), accompanied by a gloriously uplifting soundtrack. And at the end, instead of feeling exhausted, this low impact, cardio cycle ride left me feeling energised and buzzing with happy hormones.

After this soothing stretch on the bike, I glided over to my yoga mat for the second half of the class. The soft focus of the Himalayan salt lamps and calming aromas of scented diffusers kept me in a heavenly state as the focus moved to my breathing, core strength and yoga flow.

Cucumber Fields has successfully married together the endless benefits of cycling and yoga. Their exceptional teachers are experts at teaching both yoga and cycle – a rare quality indeed.

The aim of the class was to ignite and balance my entire mind, body and soul and it certainly

In August this year Cucumber Fields celebrated winning the Prestige Award for being the Best Yoga Studio in London and the Southeast, but as I discovered recently, their fresh approach to Cycle classes is also worthy of award status.

When I heard about their new and exciting signature ZenCycle class, I couldn’t wait to try it for myself.

Cucumber Fields stunning location is so refreshing and inspiring you have to stop for a moment to admire the view and enjoy a breath of the fresh country air. As I entered the Botanic Cycle studio, I immediately felt my shoulders soften and my senses awaken.

The cool green background, with natural touches of bamboo and leafy fauna provide a calm, yet energising backdrop. Home to eight state of the art Stages bikes, the founders have designed a welcoming environment where cyclists of all levels and experience would instantly feel at ease.

The ZenCycle session promises to provide you with a full mind and body experience. It didn’t disappoint.

delivered – I felt completely Zen!

After the class, whilst sinking into a comfy sofa in The Pantry, I enjoyed a delicious barista coffee and a bowl of Nina’s Natural Granola and chatted with like-minded members who couldn’t wait to tell me all about the other styles of Cycle class on the menu.

On my next visit I’m definitely going to try the Rhythm & Strength Cycle and maybe, just maybe, in the not-too-distant future, a Power Up class.

Review written by Caroline Rixon

COAT TRENDS THAT WILL BE HUGE THIS SEASON

Wrap up in style for the colder months, says Katie Wright.

Are you excited for coat season?

After a summer that seemed to last forever (not that we’re complaining) and a mild start to autumn, there hasn’t been much call for proper puffers, parkas and trenches yet.

We haven’t been able to enjoy that cosy feeling of bundling up for a brisk day, but that’s set to change as the clocks go back and chillier weather arrives.

It’s great news for fashion lovers, because this season’s high street collections are full of cool, catwalkinspired coats ready to refresh your look.

Here are five fab trends to style with your autumn/winter wardrobe…

PINK

The undisputed colour of AW22, pink was all over the runways, and the trend got a mega boost with the emergence of ‘Barbiecore’ fashion inspired by Margot Robbie and the forthcoming Barbie movie.

A punchy pink coat is the perfect statement piece for the colder months. Keep the silhouette sleek and go for slightly softer shade for maximum dayto-night potential, or opt for a vibrant fuchsia to team with party dresses and tailored looks.

MAXI LENGTH

Along with flowing skirts and gowns, maxi coats swept down the runways at Jil Sander, Altuzarra, Acne and more. The beauty of a loose, longline coat is you can throw it over just about anything.

For an on-trend autumn look, pair with wide-leg jeans and chunky Chelsea boots.

ANIMAL PRINT

From chunky faux fur jackets to chic leopard print coats, animal motifs are everywhere this season –

not that they ever really go out of style. A leopard coat is an excellent investment piece. Easy to style with denim, leather trousers and midi skirts as well as party outfits, you’ll wear yours for years to come.

PUFFER

As seen on the Dion Lee, Dries Van Noten and Michael Kors catwalks, big coats are big news this season. Turn up the volume (and the heat) on your winter wardrobe with a longline padded jacket in a neutral hue – the perfect blend of fashion and function.

SHEARLING

More versatile than a faux fur number, a fuzzy shearling or borg coat in cream, camel or navy is a great all-rounder when temperatures drop. Whether you’re living in joggers, hoodies and trainers right now or prefer a swishy Seventies look, a teddy coat will top off your autumn/winter look perfectly.

AW Interior Colour Trends ‘22

As autumn gets into full swing, the colours we’re pulled towards to build ourselves habitats that make us feel safe, cocooned and calm echo what we can see on the outside (in keeping with the vogue for the allnatural), but with a luxe twist.

With the countdown towards winter marching on, everything seems a bit more difficult. Getting used to, again, the darkness, the drizzle and the dropping temperatures. Let your home shoulder some of the wish-it-was-warmer burden and embrace what the season is offering – a palette of exquisitely rich indulgence, which brings glorious visual warmth to even the frostiest of days.

A WARM WELCOME

Sometimes it’s hard to really appreciate the beauty of autumn as the reality that summer’s gone sinks in. The glory of changing leaves on trees appreciated only for fleeting moments, curtains drawn across intense night skies, the odd splash

of sunlight rushed past in a hurry to seek shelter. These dark, rustic shades may seem a little glum when glanced at but complied into an interiors scheme the result is utterly sumptuous.

GOLDEN BROWN

From the spicy paprika, chilli and cinnamon tones speckled across exhibitions at this year’s directional Salone del Mobile furniture fair, to the reds making their way into the spotlight balanced by flashes of deepest blue, green, and golden ochres, these

colours are the furniture equivalent of a warming mug of chocolate. Rich, luxurious, and just want you need after a wrapped-in-a-scarf walk, cold commute or snow-tipped trip.

RETRO AND RUSTIC

Translating these autumnal hues into something you want to invite indoors is all about materials. This season, we’re looking to the 1970s for inspiration as we are (re)teaming autumn’s lush colouring with similarly luscious finishes – think lashings of velvet for upholstery, and high-shine for hard pieces, the overtly decadent feel balanced by the organic, warm tones. In our collection of

designer sofas and modern chairs, the combination of earthy, natural shades and tactile fabrics says two things: dive right in and bring a blanket, while glossy tables, contemporary storage pieces and statement lights nod to alluring retro 70s glam.

WARMTH BEFORE WINTER

As standalone pieces, the burgundy, red and ochre designs make a bold statement. Sensual. Opulent. Hot hot hot. Place them in pairs and larger groups, and soon you’ll forget that such seasonal photogenic beauty comes with a fall in temperatures – you won’t even mind. Upholstered designs wrap around you, ready to share their anti-winter cosiness, while full on gloss reflects light around the room, adding a flash of energy to the space and reminding us it is ok to venture out. But definitely come back in here soon.

INDOOR SWIMMING A WORTHY INVESTMENT

When the Baker family initially approached Origin, they were interested in covering an existing outdoor pool. The family had been in discussion for some time, deciding whether or not the outdoor pool was worthy of undertaking as a project.

“We originally had an outdoor pool which was here when we bought the house, it was in a completely different position from where the indoor pool is now, away from the house and further away than was desirable. We knew we were going to stay at the house for at least another 10 years so, to us, an indoor pool was worth the investment.”

Once the Baker family had settled on the idea of an indoor swimming pool, they reached back out to Origin and the planning began. “We knew Origin did it all and after seeing some of their excellent recently completed projects, we decided

to go for it. With the original outdoor pool, we found it such a task having to ‘prepare’ it for the summer months and expensive to run as well even though we had taken the necessary precautions with a pool cover etc… With an indoor pool it’s a temperature controlled environment and the pool is protected by the building, making it instantly ready for spontaneous swims and family parties!”

THE BUDGET

The Baker family had done their research and had a strong idea of what their dream pool house would entail. Keeping in mind the budget the Baker family had put forward, it was Origin’s job to deliver a design that captured every element they wanted. As an active family, they longed for an athome gym. Origin kept this in mind and designed additional multifunctional space, separate from the swimming pool that could be used as a gym or potentially turned into an office in the future.

108 DECEMBER 2022 HOME & PROPERTY

“Origin was great at keeping in mind the limits we had set and we loved working with a company that took our budget seriously and offered plenty of thoughtful and realistic suggestions throughout the whole process”

THE BENEFITS

“The biggest benefit of the indoor pool is definitely being able to swim all year round. It’s invaluable for us, we use the pool house every day and not just for swimming. Someone is always in the gym or relaxing in the lounge area.” In order to enhance the family’s enjoyment of their garden, Origin centralised the Baker family’s key activities. Origin chose a new area of the garden off to the side of the main house for the pool house, keeping it close enough for connectivity and in a position where you can look out over the garden vista and enjoy the space.

“We loved the idea of an indoor pool as another space for entertaining, we like to have friends and family over for dinner and BBQs in the summer. The pool house works as a social hub, it’s the space everyone congregates around!”

To speak to the experts at Origin Leisure call 01895 453996 now or visit originpools.co.uk for more information and to subscribe to our newsletter. Follow us on Instagram too @originpoolsuk

WHY ORIGIN?

“It was clear from the beginning Origin had earned their credentials as the indoor pool experts, our visits to completed projects confirmed this and made us feel comfortable and confident we were in safe hands. Origin consistently kept us up to date throughout the whole process, we’d have regular meetings to choose finishes which helped us make decisions quickly and move things along smoothly. We were very pleased with the quality of the products offered and the guys that came to work here during the construction process were very knowledgeable and helpful.

Origin excelled at communication throughout this process which is such an important skill for a company to master, especially when you’re entrusting them with a big project like ours. Everyone on site and in the office was approachable, we felt like we could talk to anyone and our questions would be heard. Even when it came to the snagging process, everything was sorted really promptly and to a high standard.”

“Origin know how to create something new in an existing setting and blend all the things you don’t think about like pathways, levels, views, security, and desired routes into the finished article so that it appears like it’s always been there at the end of the project – now that’s impressive”

DREAM DESKS

The focal point to any home office space is a stylish desk that can keep up with all the day to day needs.

Nick Atkin of Atkin and Thyme advises: “Plan ahead to decide how much space you would like to dedicate to your chosen desk. If you have limited dimensions, a slimmer console would be a great alternative. When choosing where to set up your desk, try and place it as close to natural light as possible, this will in turn create a healthier work environment and increase positivity. Opt for a desk that has plenty of storage so that you can hide away clutter at the end of the day, as this will help you to feel more organised and

productive.”

Ideal for smaller spaces, the curvaceous design of the Mimi Capsule Console oozes elegance with its whitewash mango wood and brass cladded features. With three handy drawers, this table can also be used within the hallway to keep bills, keys and household essentials. Part of the latest collection by Atkin and Thyme, the El Capitan Console Desk shows off a Mid Century Modern aesthetic and offers functionality with its space saving design. The Toshi Console Desk provides style and versatility, whilst the Flute Marble Console Desk in Black offers texture and substance. If industrial is the intended aesthetic, the Logan Writing Desk is ideal, and would suit a variety of schemes whilst simultaneously offering plenty of space. With its old-fashioned charm and Mid Century looks, the Stanley Writing Desk would be a family favourite. atkinandthyme.co.uk

How to create the perfect kitchen for entertaining this Christmas

“G

etting the right kitchen design for entertaining at Christmas requires forward planning to ensure your layout is perfectly placed. When thinking about key features and small details alike, it’s best to consider how you’d use the space, as this will help to inform your design.

“Remember, a kitchen is for life, not just for Christmas, so it’s important to ensure that the space meets your needs all year round, as well as during the festive season. If you’re a regular host, consider how you may like to use your kitchen for dinner parties and get-togethers throughout the year too.

Entertaining with ease

“An island unit is the perfect location to host welcome drinks and exchange presents, as it offers a hub to display perfectly crafted beverages, along with space for family and friends to mingle while you continue food preparations.

“Don’t have space for an island in your kitchen? Consider incorporating an informal seating feature, such as a seating nook. Building a small bench into the surrounding units can really maximise floorspace and positioning a small table in front can create a truly versatile feature that will prove handy throughout the year. You don’t have to forgo storage either, you can integrate clever solutions beneath the seating and surrounding

zone – a great place to hide presents in the run up to the big day, as well as clutter that you’d prefer visitors didn’t see!

“Regular hosts can also benefit from an integrated bar area or wine cooler. A central location avoids the inconvenience of guests rooting through the main fridge to locate drinks whilst you’re busy cooking or entertaining.

Preparations

“To guarantee Christmas dinner and other food preparations run smoothly, there are a range of features you can include into your design that will keep things organised and orderly. Internal storage and integrated appliances not only maximise space but keep surfaces clear from clutter too.

“Integrated carousels are excellent for convenience as they allow you to locate different utensils quickly without you having to scramble around at the back of the cupboards. Pan draws are another useful option as they provide the depth needed to store larger items whilst keeping them accessible, even amidst the busy run up to a Christmas gathering. Make the most of every inch of your cupboard space with concealed drawers, pull out wire shelves and storage baskets too.

“Smart appliances are a great option to keep timings on track, as they can be controlled through a smartphone. If you’re busy getting yourself ready or opening presents but need to pre-heat the oven, you can even do so with the click of a button.

“Discreet dishwashers also help keep a kitchen clean and tidy with minimal effort. Even for modest spaces, there are slimline options that provide a great solution.

The main event

“If your dining space is in your kitchen, a good cooker hood is an essential to remove smells and grease as you cook, so when you come to sit down for your Christmas dinner, you’re not left with lingering scents.

THE DETAILS

You can also order a brochure, book a free design consultation, or use Benchmarx’s handy kitchen visualiser tool by visiting: benchmarxkitchens.co.uk

“Innovations such as NEFF’s clear glass downdraft extractor are fantastic for a discreet look, as they don’t obstruct your view – meaning you can continue any conversations whilst tending to the hob.

“I’d also recommend considering whether you’d benefit from a warming drawer. If you’re hosting a large group, warming plates ahead of serving can help keep food hot as you plate up.

“Pendant lighting above your dining table is a great way of adding focused illumination and make that Christmas table layout sparkle. It’s always a good idea to also think about other ambient forms of lighting to set the mood, such as plinth lighting and spotlights, for a sleek, layered look.

“Make serving Boxing Day morning coffees easy by opting for an integrated coffee machine in your kitchen design. Some machines even allow you to enter your guests’ orders on your mobile device, and the machine will even start preparing the drinks – one less thing to worry about!

After dinner celebrations

“As the evening approaches, incorporating wireless speakers around your kitchen will keep guests entertained into the night. Smart technology such as Google Hub can be used to control both music and lighting, so you can easily change the ambience from the convenience of your phone.

Trend alert: Wild Woodland Christmas

GO BIG

This Christmas it’s all about the big bauble! Statement decorations are a fabulous way to bring this look to life and the beauty of oversized baubles is you don’t need huge amounts to make an impact. Mix a range of textures and finishes such as matte and metallic and include a dopamine dressing pop of vibrant green for a fresh contemporary feel.

Cosy, rustic, contemporary and charming – just a few ways to sum up one of the season’s biggest Christmas decorating trends according to leading online homewares destination, Wayfair - introducing Wild Woodland.

Embracing an abundance of natural fresh and dried foliage, a colour palette of tonal greens, earthy neutrals and touches of frosty snowy whites come together to create a soothing and enchanting look.

Calling on the principles of biophilic design, Wild Woodland is inspired by nature, connecting us to the outside world even in the cold depths of winter.

Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor, Nadia McCowan Hill explains – “The trend captures the essence of woodland charm, but its overall simplicity displays how easy it can be to give your home a harmonious festive makeover. Incorporating greenery into decorating schemes will instantly lift a room, but the complimentary tones in this look of comforting oatmeal, verdant greens and pale woods help foliage displays take centre stage.”

ENCHANTING TABLESCAPES

Laying the table for Christmas lunch transforms an everyday dining table into an inspiring setting to enjoy a day of festivities with your guests and gives you the opportunity to get creative. A beautiful tablescape can be achieved with just a few additions and doesn’t need to break the bank.

Firstly, a tablecloth will add character and protect your table from spillages. Existing plain cream or white dinnerware is perfect as a base layer, add a smaller plate in tonal green for appetisers to give your set up an air of occasion.

To recreate the wild woodland look, place pastel green candles for height and a cosy glow. A mix of fresh green and white moss looks magical when paired together as a showstopping natural centerpiece.

The beauty of this look is it’s easy to weave into lots of areas. A hallway console table is the idea spot to create a botanical display, with an assortment of vases, bottles and glass jugs in soft greens, clear glass and rusty browns. Fill with a mix

of dried flowers and foraged wild seasonal blooms. A charming hanging bag calendar doubles up as a decorative piece and re-useable advent calendar. Fill it with little surprises and little luxuries, from hot chocolate, hand cream to treats for your pet, the contents can be totally tailored to cater for every member of the family

INSIDE OUT

Our outdoor spaces can often be forgotten about outside of the spring summer months, but on a bright, dry December day, they can provide the ideal spot for a simple festive set up. The colour palette of Wild Woodland makes it naturally suited to the garden. Give a garden bench a cosy makeover with a selection of cushions and throws for a comfy spot to enjoy a warming cuppa in the fresh air.

Barbican, which is available in two colours, brings together the flair of terrazzo and the starkness of concrete in a large format, rectified porcelain tile.

Cool and contemporary, the range takes it name from the brutalist architecture of the Barbican estate in London.

Abbas Youssefi, Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “Barbican possesses a subtle beauty. While it might not be as showy as some of its contemporaries, there is an understated elegance which will transform any room in which it is used.” Barbican comes in two finishes: Light Grey and Sand.

TYE ARCHITECTS : Case study

Settled in the open countryside in Buckinghamshire this house is nestled in a secluded rural location, reflecting its surroundings of mature woodland. The setting and elegant simplicity were paramount to the design of this house.

The brief was to provide a dwelling which responds to its context in materiality. A simple palette of carefully selected materials includes the use of stone from the earth on the lower level and timber on the floating box of the upper level, enhanced by a green tinted series of panels to provide transparency and reflect the surrounding plot-scape.

With clean geometric lines, the floating first floor cantilevers and balances on the ground floor, providing long reaching views from the master bedroom and several short distance views of the plot from the other bedrooms. This architectural element pulls you into the site and allows you to marvel at its geometry and weightlessness.

The lower floor is grounded by the strong stone element; the roofing detail of the first floor floats, gliding with the frameless glazing.

Approaching the house, the glass enhances the large open spaces. The open plan ground floor connects from the front entrance area through to the rear garden and a horizontal expanse of glazing connects the rear living spaces to the garden-scape to the rear.

Vertical electronically controlled louvres to the windows provide solar shading and privacy shading

to the bedrooms. Wooden sliding door panels, some recessed and hidden in the walls allow for areas to be discretely closed off. The house is fully equipped with a home cinema room and an outdoor amphitheatre. A sunroom in the garden provides an area for outdoor living where you can sit outside in a sheltered area at different times of the day and enjoy the views of the house and the landscaped garden.

This project is energy efficient and environmentally friendly with ground source heat pumps providing the heating and hot water. To further reduce the carbon footprint, the house is also equipped with solar panels and low energy lighting.

This dwelling was designed to create an elegant, contemporary family home with an open plan layout that is an environmentally sustainable, contextually relevant and timeless concept. tyearchitects.com
