ertfordshire born Tim Hastilow studied art over 35 years ago but only returned to drawing and painting 5 years ago after encouragement from his family. He started drawing pencil portraits of animals and family pets for relatives and friends rediscovering his passion for art and wildlife. As his confidence grew he entered the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DWSF) Wildlife Artist of the year competition. He has been selected as a finalist for four years and has had his art exhibited in the Mall Galleries in London. James of St Albans is a small family business on the historic and beautiful George Street. Established over sixty years ago by Lionel James and is carried on today by his son Steve (pictured) and daughter Wendy. In the mid 1950’s, when St Albans was a major antique centre, James of St Albans focused on selling period antique furniture, porcelain, artwork and metalware. INTRODUCING LOCAL ARTIST TIM HASTILOW H
ertfordshire born Tim Hastilow studied art over 35 years ago but only returned to drawing and painting 5 years ago after encouragement from his family. He started drawing pencil portraits of animals and family pets for relatives and friends rediscovering his passion for art and wildlife. As his confidence grew he entered the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DWSF) Wildlife Artist of the year competition. He has been selected as a finalist for four years and has had his art exhibited in the Mall Galleries in London. The DWSF Wildlife Artist competition was founded 11 years ago to celebrate the beauty and colour of the natural world and showcases some of the finest and most exciting wildlife artists and raises vital awareness and funds for the endangered wildlife DSWF works hard to protect. In 2019 they received a record 1,326 entries from artists across 56 different countries. The judges then must whittle down the submissions to the final 156 pieces which are selected for the week long exhibition. Tim has had 6 pieces of art work selected in the past 4 years and includes 3 pieces of art in this years exhibition held at the end of May and one piece called ‘Thoughtful’, a 53 x 43 cm ink drawing of a chimpanzee achieved highly commended. Tim’s work is inspired by his passion for nature conversation and wildlife, from primates to birds and captures their character in his own unique style. His seemingly random scribbles build up a complex texture to give the desired effect. What appears abstract close up, is revealed in full when you step back and view as a whole. He likes to draw images

that have a big visual impact through a variety of contrasting tones and strong shapes. Over recent years Tim’s confidence has grown and his artistic style has developed and grown. His initial pencil drawings he describes and ‘tight and fussy’ but over the last few months he has explored using new techniques and his drawing style is more free and fluid. He experiments using different mediums from the traditional ink pen and ink wash to the more unusual of using coffee as a wash to create different tones and marks. As well as drawing people’s family pets and more familiar wildlife Tim also tries to raise awareness of the less well known and some may say ugly species such as vultures, pangolins and reptiles. These animals have great character and lend themselves well to Tim’s style of art with their complex markings and textures. In recent months Tim has expanded his repertoire and has drawn WW2 aircraft, another interest of his, and town landmarks and buildings.

Guests will be treated to all the Christmas classics care of live performers The Earls of Swing, alongside a three-course meal, a welcome glass of fizz and half a bottle of wine per person. Available on 7th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 19th, 20th and 21st December, tickets are priced at £72.50 per person.
Boxing Day at Down Hall Come Boxing Day, join Down Hall for an evening of dinner, drinks, dancing and spectacular live jazz from The Quartones. The Boxing Day evening package is priced at £75.00 per adult and £32.50 per child.

Thousands attend St Albans Christmas Cracker
T
housands of people attended the St Albans Christmas Cracker event to launch the festive season in spectacular style. Feedback from traders suggested that it was the busiest ever annual Christmas street party with stalls reporting they had sold out of mulled wine. The City Centre was closed to traffic from noon until 6pm on Sunday 17 November to create a safe and vibrant festival area. Among the attractions at the free-to-attend event were Santa’s grotto, dozens of food, drink and gift stalls, funfair rides, a giant snow globe and a children’s activities tent. There was also live music at two locations – the main stage adjacent to the Beech House in St Peter’s Street and at the historic Clock Tower. At 5pm, there was a countdown to the light’s being switched on with the main stage being lit up by a pyrotechnics display. The event was organised by St Albans City and District Council in partnership with City Centre businesses, via the St Albans Business Improvement District (BID). Mayor of St Albans, Councillor Janet Smith, switched on the Clock Tower illuminations including a giant bauble. She said: “I was taken aback by the size of the crowds – they were huge. This was probably the best attended City Centre events that I have been to. “The atmosphere was electric throughout the day and there was so much for people to do with children extremely well catered for. My thanks go to our events team and their helpers for all their hard work. “It has got Christmas in St Albans off to a fantastic start and I know there are many other great events that people can look forward to ranging from school fairs to the Alban Arena pantomime.” On social media, the reaction among residents and visitors was largely positive. Jo Daw posted on All Things St Albans: “What a fantastic afternoon, getting Christmas well and

truly kick started in St Albans. Lots of hard work gone in to putting this together. Hoping for a repeat next year!” Nicky Payne said: “Had a lovely time. Very busy and great atmosphere. Virtual reality App ‘Knebworth Watch’ released by Knebworth House and Harmony Studios

hen visiting Knebworth House and Gardens next season visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the interactive virtual reality App ‘Knebworth Watch’, which shows the view from the top of Knebworth’s Watchman’s Tower. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, and using information from the Knebworth House archive, the virtual reality app takes the user on a journey through history showing what Knebworth House and Park may have looked like in Anglo Saxon, Norman, Tudor and Victorian times, up to the modern day. The ‘Knebworth Watch’ App has been funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the Watchman’s Tower project, a two-year project running until September 2020 to restore access to the Victorian Watchman’s Tower at Knebworth House. Harmony Studios, who developed the App, generously matched the National Lottery funding for the App development. Help was also received from year 5 students at Roebuck Academy in Stevenage who designed Saxon villages which inspired the Saxon scene within the App. The ‘Knebworth Watch’ App is now available to download for free from the Apple Store and the Play Store. Katherine Dunstan, Education Officer at Lytton Enterprises, commented: “We are delighted that visitors will be able to see what Knebworth House may have looked like in different eras of history, and are extremely grateful to The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Harmony Studios for making this possible.” Jason Higgins, Managing Director at Harmony Studios, Commented: “To see history come to life in an interactive and engaging way, delivered using technology that younger audiences are so familiar with, is a really amazing and forward thinking way of engaging with visitors.”

ust maybe…you’re an Artist? Many years ago in my early twenties, having been educated to the brim, I found myself at a loss, lacking in direction and just not quite sure how to grasp the ‘World of Opportunity’ that lay before me. I wasn’t sure what to get up for in the morning! Trying not to allow the voices of doom to get the better of me I decided to ask myself one very
64 DECEMBER 2019
important question: and that answer would be the key to my next step. I asked myself, ‘‘What do you remember most fondly about your whole time at school?” The first memory that came into my mind was ‘making a doll’s house.’ Without further ado I enrolled on an Art Foundation course: perhaps, after years of academic study, I was in fact…an Artist? Suddenly, submersed in a creative environment, I came alive and began to paint. In all honesty, I was taught very little on this course but it didn’t matter. The starting gun had been fired and I had powered off the starting blocks. I sold all my paintings in my first exhibition in a local church hall and won two prizes! I have not gone on to become a ‘famous’ artist but I found what made me ‘tick’ in life and that is enough. In 2010, when the youngest of my 3 children went to school, I set up ‘ArtShed’, not to change the world but because art changes lives: it changed mine and can change yours too! Football coaching from J&R J
&R Coaching was an idea that became a reality. You may be asking yourself what we do? We are a football coaching company. Officially the company has been running for just over 2 years now and we are very happy with what we have achieved so far but this is only just the beginning… Where did it all start? Well myself and my college both worked at Venue 360 together as Level 2 football coaches doing group sessions. We both decided their was a niche in the market for 1-1 individual coaching sessions. We started to borrow the equipment at work to start us off. We knew from the group sessions we did that there was parents interested for their kids to start doing some individual coaching. We had a very small client base from the start but since then we now work with over 100 kids which include working with local football teams and also starting our own half term football camps. So what do we do? Previously mentioned we predominately specialise in 1-1 football coaching for children aged 4 up to late teens and also adults. We cater for any group size, age or ability. We are based at Venue 360 in Luton but we do coach in other various locations in Luton, Dunstable and Harpenden. Once word got around with the service we provided with our individual coaching, we then had more people get in contact with us regarding coaching foe their kids which is where we started to do little group session, up to 3 children at a time. We then started to work with local youth teams (Someries, Barton Rovers, Warden AFC and more recently Stopsley United) whether it has been working with them for a couple of sessions or even working with one team for a whole season which is really good to see their progression from start to finish. We then had the opportunity to start doing PPA/PE lessons/ afterschool clubs in a couple of schools – Lancot Academy and Lark Rise Academy. We wanted to continue to grow our business so we joined up with Directional who are another local company and we organised half term football camps which we have been doing for just over a year now which takes place at AFC Dunstable at Creasey Park. We did not start with many numbers but has each half term has passed numbers have increased and we are hoping

this will continue. More recently we have employed a Goalkeeper coach as we have seen another niche in the market for individual goalkeeping training. Why do we do it? One of the main reasons we set this up is because we love coaching and want to see children develop not just with their football but also learning new social and life skills. We are wanting to them to gain knowledge on the game and improve to make them become a better player. Christmas Concern W
hen it comes to Christmas, some of us can feel apprehensive. Feelings of anxiety can start in October and November, whilst seemingly forgetting that Christmas is actually in December and, for most, only lasts 2 or 3 days. However, when Christmas is actually upon us the build-up to get everything done before the big day can have the potential to overwhelm us and spoil the celebrations. Initially, be totally realistic about your aspirations and your budget. Don’t hope for too much and don’t spend more than you have. Christmas is, for many, unbearable and an immense sense of anxiety can totally disrupt the potential enjoyment of those 2 or 3 days. This emotional disquiet can completely distract from the what getting together with our families might be all about. Being burdened by unwelcome psychological anxiety and stress can deepen during the festive period. Try not to get carried away. Take regular ‘time outs’ and say to yourself, “Stop, consider… and now contemplate.” Think about how you are feeling and how others might be feeling, consider your next move carefully and compassionately, attempt to maintain an internal calmness. This is a mindful thought process which also includes taking

notice of situations and people and being in the here and now. When connecting with people during the Christmas holiday try and join in, share and be friendly and make an extra effort to empathise. A 2015 MIND survey discovered that 20% of people have felt lonely during Christmas. Stephen Buckley, head of information at Mind, says: “At Christmas existing problems can seem even bigger - if you are lonely, it can highlight how lonely you are and make you feel that you should be socialising.” So, if you know someone who is isolated, attempt to include them. Try and give a little more and do something special for other people. Ask others how they are feeling and really listen. Many of us overindulge with food and possibly alcohol. Despite its connection with having a good time, alcohol is actually a depressant, and can indisputably increase anxiety. Try to be aware of your personal limits and try to do some exercise to counteract any excesses. Most people would truly like Christmas to be full of feelings of love, cheerfulness, relaxation and enjoyment. Perhaps the main features of Christmas are the opportunities to meet up with friends and family. Focal therapy for prostate cancer Focal therapy is a treatment suitable for men who have medium (intermediate) risk prostate cancer, ideally in one part of the prostate. As it treats only the cancer, and a small area around the cancer, the side effects of treatment are much less than those for traditional prostate cancer surgery or radiotherapy. This treatment option requires a careful assessment of the prostate using MRI and biopsy information. For men who are suitable, it is done as a day surgery procedure. Follow up includes careful monitoring using MRI scans and sometimes biopsy. In many cases it allows men to continue to have good sexual and urinary function, whilst treating the cancer. As it’s a small treatment, it can be repeated, and if necessary, surgery or radiotherapy can be used at a later date.
There are a number of different energies used in focal therapy for prostate cancer, including ultrasound (High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound, or HIFU) and electroporation (or NanoKnife, passing an electrical current across the tumour to treat it). Robotically assisted prostate surgery Prostate surgery is offered to men with prostate cancer that hasn’t spread further than their prostate, or that has only spread a short distance. This will help to lessen the temptation to snack throughout the day. Low sugar muesli topped with low fat yogurt and fresh fruit or scrambled eggs with smoked salmon on wholegrain seeded bread with slices of fresh orange alongside taste indulgent but are high in protein and vitamins. A satisfying start to Christmas Day. Work up an appetite With so much amazing food on offer, you need a hearty appetite so that you are able to enjoy it. Heading out with your family is a sociable Christmas Day activity, and you will burn calories without feeling like you are working out. If you live in a city, take advantage of the quiet roads to cycle in areas that you wouldn’t usually be able to enjoy. In the countryside, lace up your boots and take to the fields for a bracing hike2. Turkey This classic Christmas centrepiece is a lean source of protein, low in fat, full of B vitamins and the amino acid tryptophan that forms neurotransmitters serotonin and melatonin for mood and sleep as well as converting to make the B vitamin niacin needed for energy production . The light meat is lower in fat than the dark meat, so opt for breast meat to minimise your calorie intake. Removing the skin makes a massive difference to the amount of fat you’re consuming. The best way to prepare your turkey is to prick the skin and let the fat drain away, before roasting your turkey on an upturned dish to allow the fat to drip off as it cooks. Cranberries Berries are perfect with turkey, adding festive colour and a vibrant taste. Cranberries are packed full of antioxidants reducing cardiovascular disease risk and protecting from LDL cholesterol oxidation linked
Brussel sprouts and extra vegetables You either love them or hate them, but the humble sprout has a lot to offer. This vegetable is a great source of fibre, the B vitamin folate, and vitamin C1. Serve sprouts along with as many colourful vegetables as you can find. Carrots, red cabbage and broccoli are all firm favourites full of goodness with anti cancer properties, but they also fill up your plate well, leaving less room for unhealthy extras and keep you fighting fit over the Christmas period. Steam or boil your vegetables or roast in minimal spray of oil to minimise fats and avoid smothering them in butter. Christmas pudding If you still have room, you can indulge in a slice of Christmas pudding with low-fat custard or low calorie ice cream, avoid the extra brandy butter. But even so keep to a small portion as this is a very dense high sugar extra. Calories don’t Count and Cholesterol is good for you! (Yes Really) A s a community pharmacist I’ve spent the last 35 years focused upon helping people to get the best from their medication, after all that’s what we spend all those years at university training to do. But over the last five years something dawned upon me. It seems like half the country is taking statins and the other half is taking anti-depressants (and of course many people take both!). In short we are medicating an entire society and, much as I make my living from it, it has never felt right. Now having worked a lifetime in the NHS I’m a huge supporter of it, but the trouble is we spend so little on prevention and so much on treatment. Why are we always locking the door after the horse has bolted? After all we’re not really curing anything: stop taking your statins or your blood pressure medication or your anti-diabetic medication and the problem simply comes back.... we are simply masking the symptoms. So I got to thinking what if there’s a single root cause that links many of our problems? Type2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypertension, dementia, cancer etc etc. After all we don’t see these problems on anything like the scale in the “primitive” hunter-gather tribes like the Hadza whose lifestyle hasn’t changed for 40,000 years. What if our problems are mainly lifestylerelated not genetically pre-determined after all? I was on a journey and a couple of years ago a couple of famous doctors, Aseem Malhotra and Robert Lustig, wrote a superb opinion piece in The Pharmaceutical Journal titled “ The Calorie and Cholesterol Hypotheses are both Dead”. You can find it at: www.tinyurl.com/rfp4ean It argued that we’ve been looking through the wrong end of the telescope, obsessing about cholesterol and how many calories we are eating (rather than the quality of our food) while the truth has been hiding in plain sight: a diet high in sugar, carbs and processed foods is driving all these illnesses. And likewise the pharmaceutical industry relies on the multi-trillion-dollar statin market for a substantial part of its income. The food industry is never going to invest in trying to convince us to eat LESS food, anymore than the pharmaceutical industry is going to invest in getting us to take fewer drugs. New for 2020 - Origin Redesigned Throughout the year, Origin has been hard at work completing numerous projects. With each one they try something different and learn something new and their most recent project was no exception. What started as a barn design pool house was transformed into what you see below after the client approached them, inspired by another building they had seen. This design is unlike anything Origin has built before and needless to say, both the company and the clients are thrilled with the results. As Origin do it all, they were able to work closely with the clients from the start, take on board their vision and come up with a design that was not only feasible, but one that looked great too. Everything about the pool house is unique, from exterior shape to the application of the cedarwood planks used vertically instead of a horizontal layout. The interior pool house boasts a kitchen area, changing room and bathroom facility as well as a stunning pool, contemporary sliding doors that allow the outside in and a virtual transparency to take account of the amazing surrounding countryside. This project, while different has proved that Origin’s years of knowledge and experience are second to none and

ne of the best things about Christmas is anticipation. Decking the halls, not to mention every other room in the house, is a very important part of it. It’s time to draw the curtains, light the fire, and pique the senses with wintery scents like pine, cinnamon, orange and spice.
