Polar Bear Plunge A fun family event on the first day of the year when hardy souls celebrate the New Year by taking a dip in icy water. Sign up for an icy dip in the St Albans Diving Club’s pool - in the name of charity and to earn your polar bear medal! All of the money we receive is split equally between Rennie Grove Hospice Care and Earthworks St Albans. On site lifeguard and plenty of hot chocolate, cakes and spectators to cheer the plucky plungers on, this promises to be a funpacked family event. Blow away those cobwebs and start the New Year with a SPLASH! All dippers will receive a medal and a hot chocolate with (or without) marshmallows. Prizes for youngest plunger, oldest plunger, best fancy dress, best corporate effort, best team effort and more. Music, face painting, children’s activities - and a bar. It’s the perfect New Year’s Day. 11.30am-4pm, all of the entrance fee will go directly to the charities - £12.50 per adult plunger, £5 per child plunger, £7 per adult spectator, child spectators free. £30 for a family ticket of plungers. If you turn up without booking, we can not guarantee admittance on the day, as in 2016 the event proved to be very popular and there are restrictions on numbers at the venue. 17 december A Christmas Cracker! Rickmansworth Players are proud to present: “A Christmas Cracker!” – their first ever Festive Family Concert. In a departure from the usual seasonal choir concert, the performing arts society is involving all its members, young and old in the festivities. The concert will feature not just seasonal a capella favourites from the Rickmansworth Players Choir, but also singing and dancing from their award-winning Youth and Junior groups. “This will be a real feel-good event, with something for all the family”, says choir director Pete Gold, whose wife Clare and son Sam are also performing in the concert. “I’m looking forward to hearing all those voices singing in harmony, and seeing our community gathered together in celebration”. 40 years in the Morgan business
M
elvyn Rutter Ltd is the Morgan Main Dealer for the Hertfordshire and Essex region and is based in Little Hallingbury, near Bishop’s Stortford. 2016 marks a very special milestone, as the firm celebrates 40 years in the Morgan business. Don’t let your neck give away your age! W
hen the late great Nora Ephron, of Sleepless in Seattle fame, published her 2006 book “I Feel Bad About My Neck”, I knew immediately that it would be a bestseller. That’s because I knew how many women of a similar age - including many of my patients - would empathise with Ephron’s sentiments. In the book Ephron describes how sometimes she would notice that she and her friends would all be wearing polo or turtleneck sweaters....or scarves....or mandarin collars. All in an attempt to disguise the fact that, even though their faces looked great for their age, their necks did not. “You have to cut a redwood tree open to see how old it is,” she wrote, “but you would not have to if it had a neck.” I hear similar sentiments every day from my patients..... “I don’t know how - or when - it happened,” they say. “One morning I just looked in the mirror and suddenly there’s this woman who looks like me, but this woman has a crepe-y neck...” Unfortunately, there’s nothing that betrays a woman’s age more quickly than a loss of tension in the neck. Even more unfortunately, it does eventually happen to most women, for several reasons. First of all, while most women apply all manner of anti-ageing creams to their faces and many have treatments to keep the skin on their face looking its best, the neck tends to get left out. Secondly, the skin on the neck’s delicate area develops wrinkles faster than the face. One of the main reasons your skin begins to lose tension is because the substance that keeps it plumped up and healthy looking when you’re younger - hyaluronic acid - is gradually degraded. That’s why lots of the dermal fillers on the market today are made of hyaluronic acid. It’s a gel-like molecule that helps to hydrate your skin and maintain its elasticity, so getting it back into your skin does wonders. Profhilo is even better than that. “L
ike the majority of people, I want bigger hair. While I have no problems with length (think mutant hair and nail growth!), when it comes to volume, I often fall flat. So when not one, but numerous friends revealed the secret to their swishy ‘cool girl’ hair was actually discreet extensions by Vixen & Blush, I wanted in. Why spending more on a high quality timber front door is worthwhile to prevent problems in the future.

t is well worth UK property owners who decide they would like a new timber front door, or are looking to replace their old wooden door, carefully researching the product they are considering having installed before they order it. This is because most wooden front doors are prone to twisting and warping, so it is important to make sure any new replacement timber door is manufactured to a high standard and in a way that prevents such occurrences, and is made from high quality materials that best resist deterioration.

If you already have a wooden door, it is wise to always repair or repaint the door as soon as it shows even small cracks or paint peeling. Also polishing the door about twice a year can help keep the sealing in good condition. Recoat with Polyurethane or Varathane or similar sealant every two years. There is no denying that wooden doors can be incredibly pleasing on the eye at the very outset, but their appearance can quickly suffer once weathering and rotting takes hold. Only thorough and regular maintenance will sustain the aesthetics of timber, as it is essential not to allow water to penetrate, as if this happens, the wood will swell and warp, leaving your door in state that cannot be repaired without replacing it with a new one. If your front door is exposed to direct sunlight or the English weather, consider building a cover or eave over the doorway. This will also protect people who stand at your entrance in inclement conditions. If you decide to replace your old wooden door or have always wanted a new timber front door, choose a wood known to be weather resistant. Independent double glazing manufacturers Hazlemere Window Company Ltd, now offer high quality bespoke timber front doors and matching timber side panels. Doors can be either single colour or dual colour. All these engineered timber front doors are painted with 4 layers of high quality Farrow & Ball paint. This special microporous Farrow & Ball paint allows the timber to breathe, as all timber “sweats”, so it important the moisture can escape. All Century engineered timber front doors are highly secure and can open inwardly or outwardly and have sculptured contours of typical wooden designs. High quality gaskets and closing seals ensure effective weatherstripping. The hardwood clad extruded aluminium outer frame is mitred and mechanically jointed. The Century engineered timber door is Secured by Design and comes with a Yale 3 star security 5-Pin cylinder as standard, as well as a Winkhaus lock and high security multi-locking system.

The high security glazing bead on all Century doors is of boxed construction and interlocks with the door profiles so that it cannot be prised off without first removing the internal wedge gaskets. At mid height, doors are secured by a spring latch and separate deadbolt. Two hooks bolts are thrown into keeps in the upper and lower door frame. Slow close greased hinges give these heavy duty doors great stability and smooth opening and closing operation. It is a true and time trusted saying that “you get what you pay for”.
