The lunch menu includes some trend-setting dishes including fried halloumi sticks and Bill’s famous fish finger and prawn sandwich and, for the office workers soup and half a sandwich will set you back just £8.95. Bill’s also has dinner specials every night of the week. The menu includes tasty dishes such as thai green curry, blue cheese and smoked tomato mac and cheese, steak and rarebit pie, and prawn and fish pie. An evening set menu for two courses costs £16.95 Monday – Thursday until 10.30pm and if steak is your dish of choice, from Sunday to Wednesday enjoy an outstanding 9oz Ribeye steak with peppercorn sauce and glass of beautiful Merlot wine for only £19.95. The cocktail menu is another hidden gem mixed by the Bill’s highly trained bar staff. Pick from a refreshing Mojito, to Gin based cocktails partnered with elderflower or Bill’s pink lemonade, to signature Prosecco numbers and Espresso Martinis or a good old fashioned Bloody Mary. From Humble Bakers to Hertfordshire Hoteliers

The Hertfordshire-based company may be best known for its four-star luxury hotels, but the business originally came from much humbler beginnings.

n 1769, master baker, John Beale moved to London and opened a shop on Oxford Street. He was soon joined by the second Beale, also called John, who opened a shop around the corner with his nephew Edward, who later went on to teach the baking trade to his nephew, William, at his own bakery in Islington. Following his apprenticeship, William opened a shop in Highgate Hill and expanded the business to provide a dinner delivery service - the Beales’ first foray into catering. The business was so successful that in 1889 William was able to open a five storey restaurant and grocery provisions store in Holloway. Although the grocery side of the business was eventually closed down, the bakery and restaurant continued to go from strength to strength, paving the way for the next chapter in this family’s fortunes. The Beale family first entered the hotel industry in 1945 when Edward Beale purchased West Lodge Park Hotel in Hadley Wood, Hertfordshire. Originally a quiet, unlicensed hotel housing mainly permanent residents, it underwent a significant change in 1958, with updated rooms, a new bar and upgraded restaurant. In 1964, Edward’s son Trevor acquired Hatfield Lodge, adding a second hotel to the Beale portfolio. Between 1964 and 1997, both hotels underwent a significant programme of renovations, and in 2004,

Andrew Beale, son of Trevor, supervised the rebuilding of Hatfield Lodge, transforming it into a first-class, four star venue called Beales Hotel, Hatfield. In contrast to the traditional country house style of West Park Lodge, Beales Hotel was built in a striking, contemporary style, blending steel fittings, cedar wood and large expanses of glass. Today, both hotels have more than fifty guest rooms, as well as impressive conference facilities and unique features such as a large outdoor arboretum which was planted by Edward Beale himself. Although the two venues may differ from each other in style they share a commitment to excellence that has been evident throughout the family’s history. Over more than 200 years, the Beale family business has developed from a single bakery into a group of fine hotels. The current success of the Beale Group is down to the hard work of eight generations of Beales, each of whom have put their own particular stamp on the business, adapting to a range of challenges and opportunities, including booms, slumps and even world wars! St Albans Beer & Cider Festival Returns! Wednesday 26th – Saturday 29th September 2018, 11am – 11pm.

ertfordshire’s largest Beer & Cider Festival, run by the South Hertfordshire branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), will this year have featured at the Alban Arena for 23 years. With over 350 cooled cask-conditioned real ales, 50 bottle-conditioned beers, 80 ciders and perries and 80 foreign beers there’s something to suit everyone’s taste! We pride ourselves of selling a diverse range of styles, including the more elusive styles such as Mild, Stout, Porter and Old Ale. There will also be plenty Festival Specials for those who like to try new beers. We’ll also be stocking vegan, gluten-free and alcohol-free beers. New for 2018, “Cask is Cool” at St Albans. We’ll be using a vast range of new cooling equipment this year to ensure we keep your beer at the correct temperature so it is cool and has the fresh vibrant taste that you and the brewers themselves would expect. We’re looking to sneak in an additional cask bar downstairs in the basement too making 10 bars in total. Expect up to 450 different beers on sale across the bars. Up to 300 UK cask beers including, milds, porters, stouts, bitters, strong bitters, barley wines. Up to 50 bottle-conditioned beers (real ale in a bottle) plus no/low-alcohol beers. Vegan and gluten-free beers will also be available. Plus there’s a selection of 80 foreign beers from all around the world including draught beer from Germany. After a roaring success last year, the cider and perry bar will once again feature in its more prominent position in the main hall. The upgraded location means greater space at the bar and more ciders and perries available at any one time. We expect around 80 real ciders and perries from small

cider makers around the country. This will satisfy all tastes and for those who are driving, or simply fancy a cool refreshing soft drink, there will be delightful pure apple juice from a local cider maker. Previously struggled for somewhere to sit? This year we’re once again offering seating in the main hall on Wednesday – the perfect session to come to try the widest range of beers of offer. We’ll also be opening the upstairs balcony area from 5pm on Thursday and Friday and throughout the whole of Saturday. n the 2014 annual budget the chancellor introduced dramatic new rules concerning access to pension funds. These new pension freedoms allow far greater flexibility to individuals in retirement but for some the options only complicate things. Matthew Dean, Managing Partner of Hoxton Capital Management, a bespoke local financial advisory firm which specialises in helping clients throughout their financial life, understands that the complexity and variety can be overwhelming but insists the changes are in the interests of consumers and simply need to be used to their full potential. “If someone told you to jump off a cliff…” A saying we have all heard and probably used at some point in our lives… but when someone says it to you for real, its quite a shock.

ne of the fastest growing adventure activities in the UK is “ Coasteering.” A high octaine mix of Swimming, Climbing and Jumping, whilst orienteering along the coastline. Coasteering originates from West Wales and the Pembrokeshire coast but the extraordinary growth of this activity has seen it spread to the tip of Scotland, along the south coast and down to the furthest tip of Cornwall. It’s success is simply that Coasteering lets you get to places that you would not normally be able to... climbing ridges, jumping into the sea and swimming through sea caves. To the curious there is an utter delight in exploring and discovering the incredible beauty of the craggy British Coastline and meeting its array of amazing in habitants from inquisitive grey seals, to commorants diving for a catch or Peragrine Falcons hoover above a cliff edge looking for prey. Newquay in Cornwall has some of the most beautiful coastline to explore with eleven beaches spread over seven miles of coastline it has been one of the areas that has seen the biggest take up of Coasteering. We met up with Nick Webb the owner and operator of Bare Feet Coasteer a Coasteering specialist based near Fistral beach to the west of the town centre. Nick gives us some back ground to how Coasteering got started here in the town. “The first place to start commercial coasteering in Newquay was The Adventure Centre at Lusty Glaze Beach back in the early 90’s. At That point Lusty Glaze ws the UK’s first Lifeguard Training Centre. Having visited Wales to look at canyoning and Coasteering, Jeremy Griffiths, Darren Keal and Dave Harriss married the disciplines of the

The Mill Hill Peter Collinson Heritage Garden

his garden was inaugurated on the 250th anniversary of the death of the plant collector & botanist, Peter Collinson F.R.S., 1694-1768, who lived here in the original ‘Ridge Way House’. Mill Hill school’s top terrace, with its ancient trees, owes its origins to the life-long work of Peter Collinson, a foremost member of the 18th -century ‘transatlantic natural history exchange’. Now recognised as one of the formative influences on Britain’s landscape. A representative selection of the plants and flowers which he introduced to English gardening from across the world is now planted here, alongside his many trees. The objective of the garden is to enhance the enjoyment of visitors, pupils, parents, Old Millhillians, and the growing fraternity of garden enthusiasts, as well as to benefit the education of all schools within the Mill Hill School Foundation. The project has been supported by the Foundation’s Head, Mrs Frances King & the Court of Governors, as well as by the Old Millhillians Club, and the Linnean Society, and in association with the Mill Hill Preservation Society. The project team comprises Dr Russell Cowan (OM 1958-63); Trevor Chilton (former Head of Biology and Housemaster, Collinson House (1978-2009); Roderick Braithwaite (OM 1945-1950); & Sam Baldock (Assistant Head, Academic), Mill Hill School). “The Heritage Garden is a thrilling culmination of a 40-year personal interest in the life and work

of Peter Collinson, which was stimulated by seeing a cedar tree, allegedly planted by his friend Carl Linnaeus, in the grounds of Mill Hill School when I arrived in 1978 as a young Biology teacher. As I learned of his wide network of “brothers of the spade”, notably in North America, I determined to plant trees in the grounds which had been originally introduced through these connections and was proud to be appointed as House Master to the boarding house which bears Collinson’s name. Teens Unite has launched a capital appeal to raise £4.6 million, to open the first, UK mainland retreat for 13-24 year olds battling cancer and it’s longlasting effects, which will be known as The House of Teens Unite. With offices based in Broxbourne and Loughton, Teens Unite is the only charity in the UK to provide ongoing social, emotional and physical support to young people from diagnosis through to remission and beyond. Following cancer treatment in young people, 90% suffer from anxiety, 83% experience loneliness and

“I

’ve always been a fan of colour in my wardrobe and have never been to try new colours. I have happily rocked a bright yellow or shocking pink dress, but now looking over my wardrobe and seeing old photographs, it’s safe to say that some were fashion disasters! Also, I am constantly buying new items and not using around 70% of the wardrobe I already have. So I am wasting cash, and clothes continue to pile up in my wardrobe taking up space. So it’s safe to say that when the option to take a Rebecca Mitchell Colour class from House of Colour came up, I grabbed it with both hands. I honesty didn’t know what to expect from a colour class – I didn’t know how it was done and how it would actually help, but as soon as it was over I was surprised and excited having completely enjoyed the whole experience. Rebecca is so passionate about her company, she beams when she starts the class and makes you just as excited as she is clearly an expert and knows her stuff. Also, since she is so fantastically well-dressed herself, you can tell you are in good hands. Rebecca’s studio is just in the heart of Harpenden and is stylish and comfortable, and I honestly felt like a celebrity being treated to a personal fashion styling session. Following my colour class, I’ve learnt that colour is an amazing and powerful thing. I never realised before how the colour you wear can ultimately change both how you feel and affect your skin tone, which affects your well-being and confidence. As I walk into Rebecca’s studio, I come face to face with the colour wheel and Rebecca starts by telling me the history behind it and all the reasons why certain

colours sit within each seasonal colour palette. I found this all really interesting and straight away I was drawn to what I thought would be my colours. Not surprisingly, I was wrong. When trying out the colours, the process was informative and robust and as each coloured drape was put on me…….Once we had been through the entire process it was very clear which seasonal palette of colours suited me and I was pleased that this introduced some colours which I wouldn’t usually have dreamed of buying including dark navy, damson and charcoal grey. Rebecca also showed me how colours can be combined and made me think about items in my wardrobe that I can now reuse and put with items I would never have considered before After my colour palette had been discovered, we went on to a “90 second” make-up trail and Rebecca’s applied a ultra light-weight foundation and powder in one. She got it on my skin within a few minutes and I had total coverage. It was completely light and in this heat we are having it didn’t shine or sweat off. A beautiful pink blusher was applied and then we tried three recommended lipsticks – all three suited me and my skin tone. I only scratch the surface of what Rebecca can do with the colour class and I will be back for more with a Style Development Class! After the class I got to take away a beautiful leather wallet with all my colour swatches, along with a personalised booklet to take shopping for new items and to revamp my current wardrobe. I am confident I won’t be spending half as much on new clothes and will be using a lot of items I already have from now on. Relax Stress is a part of everybody’s life, whether you’re going through menopause or not. Thinking about how to deal with it constructively can improve your life whatever your age. • Meditate – It may not be for everyone, but just 15 minutes a day of meditation can drastically improve not only your stress levels, but your ability to cope.

Talk to someone You may feel like you’re on a rollercoaster ride of emotions throughout menopause, unable to find your keys and feel overly upset about it? Don’t worry – it’s normal! • Tell your family – Although you’re the one that’s dealing with this crazy ride, your family are likely to notice it too. Let them know that you’re feeling sensitive or you’re having a down day/moment, it’s ok to admit it, and they can help you through it. • Reach out – It is important to have a good support network around you in times such as this. When you’re feeling stressed or down, reach out to a friend, a health professional or even an online forum.

Cool down You may feel as if your body’s thermostat is playing tricks on you, but numerous ladies have an extremely slender scope of comfort during menopause and it doesn’t take much to set off the alarm that screams at your body “cool off now!” • Use breathing techniques – Breathing slowly and deeply when a hot flush comes on can shorten and lessen it • Drink water – It’s important to say hydrated and replenish the water lost from your body during hot flushes • Try and avoid hot and spicy foods – Spices can sometimes trigger hot flushes, even if you’ve always been eating them, so try and stay away, it won’t be forever.

• Bedtime routine – If you’re struggling to get some well-earned shut eye, try to introduce a bedtime routine, for example you could take a bath and read a few chapters of a book. This helps relax your body and prepare for sleep • Regulate the temperature of your room – Sleep with a light sheet under the duvet so you can kick off the top layer when you get too hot and still feel cosy, have a fan or keep your window open through the night and wear light cotton pyjamas. The end of summer is coming …. Is it a relief for you or are you sad to see it go?

How to use accessories in the right way If you’re in a rush to get ready in the mornings, or don’t have all day to plan your outfits, then accessories are your saving grace! A monochromatic outfit or understated dress sense can be changed drastically by simply changing accessories. Adding a piece of statement jewellery to a well-fitted pair of trousers and shirt can entirely transform the look. Changing up the jewellery and wearing the same outfit with different jewellery can give you multiple different looks. Jewellery isn’t the only avenue to explore when it comes to accessorising. Scarves are a classic and feminine way to add flair to a simple outfit, and gives you the opportunity to add a pop of colour to neutral outfits. 2. Less is more Minimalism is a trend that will never go out of style and how simplicity can be key in pulling off any outfit. When putting together an outfit that follows the notion of less being more, it’s important to keep in mind that neutral colours work best, staple items are key, quality is better than quantity and that fun is still welcomed! This concept works from choosing the colours to wear, doing a wardrobe detox to declutter items you no longer wear, buying into staple items in good quality fabrics keeping accessories to a minimum. This will all help you to achieve a simplistic, less is more kind of style. 3. Wardrobe detox If you’re fighting an over-full wardrobe every morning, you’re definitely not making the most of the little time that you have for style. habits, keeping items that aren’t right for your body and holding onto mistake purchases because you feel guilty about the money wasted. A cluttered wardrobe is the easiest way to feel discouraged about your style. Now the weather is getting warmer it is the perfect time to perform a wardrobe detox. Set aside some time and go through each item, getting rid of what is no longer useful. Use a fulllength mirror to check yourself in the items you try on, and get rid of anything that is unflattering or that no longer fits. This includes all mistake purchases, and things you are saving ‘just in case’! 4. Shoes are the key to your style Shoes are essential whether we’re passionate about them or not. Some wardrobes have shelves and shelves of shoes. Other people may have a style or two that they favour and buy over and over again, keeping their selection to a minimum. A bright pair of heels, a printed pair of loafers or a vibrant pair of sneakers can change up an outfit instantly. It can show you have thought about your outfit from head to toe and the finishing touches are key. For me the investment in shoes seasonally is key to your style and keeping it up-to-date. The truth about the current temporary relaxation of the planning laws in relation to Conservatories and Extensions

hilst homeowners can in theory have larger extensions at present, the temporary rules are not a blank cheque and there are still plenty of legalities that need to be adhered to, so before adding an extension make sure you have understood what you can and cannot do before having something built that may end up being a mistake. According to the PlanningPortal.gov.uk website an extension or addition to your house in England is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, subject to the following limits and conditions (for a full list of all the rules, visit the planning portal itself): 1) No more than half the area of land around the â€œoriginal houseâ€? would be covered by additions 82 AUGUST 2018

or other buildings. 2) No extension forward of the principal elevation or side elevation fronting a highway. No extension to be higher than the highest part of the roof. 3) Single-storey rear extension must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres if an attached house or by four metres if a detached house. 4) In addition, outside Article 2(3) designated land and Sites of Special Scientific Interest the limit is increased to 6m if an attached house and 8m if a detached house until 30 May 2019. 5) These temporary increased limits (between 3m and 6m for terraced and semi-detached houses and between 4m and 8m for detached houses respectively) are subject to the prior notification of the proposal to the Local Planning Authority

and the implementation of a neighbour consultation scheme. If objections are received, the proposal might not be allowed. 6) Maximum height of a single-storey rear extension of four metres. 7) Maximum eaves height of an extension within two metres of the boundary of three metres. 8) Maximum eaves and ridge height of extension no higher than existing house. 9) Side extensions to be single storey with maximum height of four metres and width no more than half that of the original house. 10) Materials to be similar in appearance to the existing house. 11) No verandas, balconies or raised platforms. The above government guidance reflects temporary increases to the size limits for singlestorey rear extensions (which commenced in May 2013) that must be fully completed by 30 May 2019, under the temporary relaxation permitted under the associated Neighbourhood Consultation Scheme. Before any homeowner gets too excited, the extra temporary increased extension size limits for conservatories etc. are still subject to planning law, and in practice only going to be permitted if not a single neighbour objects, and your local council agree that your written submission and the professionally drawn plans of your proposals that they require comply with both planning law and the Building Regulations. A downside of the Neighbours Consultation Scheme is that you have to wait 8 weeks for a determination. Plus, if any neighbour objects, your local council is probably only going to allow development if it falls within the limits of Permitted Development (i.e. a maximum of 3m projection from the back of the original rear wall for attached houses and 4m for detached houses). They will then advise you that should you want to have a larger development considered, you will need to submit a full planning application. Consequently, the smart way to go in the first place is to apply for full planning permission should you want to have an extension greater than these sizes, as this immediately saves you 8 weeks, and if done in consultation with your local councils

and planning professionals, you’ll stand a far better chance of gaining an approval. The new temporary increases don’t apply to “designated land”, Conservation Areas, Listed Buildings or Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If your property is part of a relatively new development, your local council may have withdrawn your PD Rights, which would mean you’d need to submit a planning application, even if it was say only wanting to add a 3m x 3m conservatory onto the original rear elevation. So before you embark on any extension it is always worth checking your property has sufficient PD Rights still intact to carry out the project you are looking to have done. A good choice for peaceful sleep also includes aloe vera and the jade plant that not only do not take away oxygen, but produce it to make us sleep even better.

How can you begin your adventure with home gardening? “When bringing home a plant, it is always worth reading about it. There is a lot of valuable information on the internet and in books. Then it is worth observing how it feels in our space and tries to adapt to the prevailing conditions. If it is very dry in our house, it is possible that, despite following the recommendations, you may need to water it more often, or on the contrary, if we have humidity - less.
