The exhibition entitled ‘Retro 100’ saw the creation of a stunning collection of works chronicling images, iconography and brands from the last 100 years. Using stencils and spray paints, Lhouette creates works on board and reclaimed forklift pallets that are both contemporary and impactful.

23 august Tewin Classic Car & Craft Show On 23rd August 2015 Tewin will be holding it’s annual Classic Car & Craft Show. At last year’s event a we had more than 400 cars on display as well as over 40 stalls selling a wide range of crafts and plants. This year we hope to have even more attractions on offer during the afternoon, including a group of Lindy Hop dancers. 16 & 30 august Kids’ Fun Fairs in Canons Park There’ll be three times the fun in Canons Park (Edgware) this year, with not one but three fun fair events to keep the kids happy during August. Organised by the Friends of Canons Park, the events are replacing the one-off fun days in Canons Park which have been a highly popular feature of Edgware life for the past eleven years. et in a series of converted farm buildings off Coopers Green Lane not far from St Albans city centre stands OSPREY St Albans, the picturesque rural shopping venue created by Hertfordshire based entrepreneur Graeme Ellisdon. With a lifestyle homewares store, OSPREY LONDON outlet store and Saddlery Café serving delicious, locally baked wheat and gluten-free cakes and treats, the place attracts a stylish and loyal clientele. “Ten years ago, friends probably questioned what we were doing when we said we were opening a store in the middle of a field,” says Graeme, “but everyone agrees the atmosphere here is something special.” Judging from the busy tables in the café’s courtyard, it’s clear that OSPREY St Albans has become a real destination. While the brand is best known for its luxury leather bags and accessories for both men and women, it’s not unusual to find groups of cyclists, as well as walkers and their dogs making a detour here. “Our motto here has always been Muddy boots, dogs & children welcome,” laughs Graeme. “But whether you’re looking for a handcrafted oak table, a new leather bag or somewhere original to meet friends for

lunch, this is most definitely shopping for pleasure.” Style-conscious readers will therefore be delighted to learn that early September sees the opening of a second Hertfordshire store for the brand. “We’re opening a store at Battlers Green, just six minutes from Radlett,” Graeme reveals. At the time of going to press, Graeme and his team are busy fitting out one of the barns at this popular rural shopping village. “We’re really looking forward to introducing local readers to the newest OSPREY LONDON outlet store,” he says, revealing the brand’s plans to showcase their eponymous leather accessories - all bearing an attractively reduced price tag. It’s all in the detail: The American phenomenon that is hitting the UK’s roads Lee Mitchell, managing director of Extreme Detailing Ltd, Hertfordshire’s own answer to a master detailer explains.
I
n the USA car washing and detailing accounts for an annual revenue of over nine billion dollars! Interestingly in the UK we have some of the most knowledgeable detailers in the world, second only to The States, and yet the industry is still not widely understood. We have a harsh environment for car paintwork here - the sun, air borne contaminants from power stations, industrial fallout and natural pollutants all settle on the car. Moisture and heat then act as a catalyst and the damage begins. This on top of water spots, bird droppings and tree sap compound the problems, making it challenging to keep the paintwork perfect In fact, if not done properly, washing a car can be detrimental to paintwork - sponges and chamois are certainly out of the question. You need to be sympathetic to the materials. For example, harsh chemicals corrode the brakes and reused sponges put fine marks in to the paint dulling it over time. Interiors need regular treatments including the trim, keeping that natural finish without unsightly shine. A car needs to be brought up to a high standard then protected and maintained. So, what is a detailer? Well we have an understanding of the materials used in the production of the car and how best to restore them, keeping trim looking its best and getting the cars paintwork to ‘pop’. A detailer can make the car look better than new, giving paintwork great depth of colour, glass optically
perfect and trim blemish free. Add to this protection developed specifically for each material used and the vehicle becomes so much easier to maintain and will stay looking great for years to come. Any knowledgeable detailer can expertly restore every aspect of your car - whether it’s addressing the grey, blotchy marks on the whale tale of a classic Porsche, or removing the shine on the dash on a classic Ferrari. Exam Results! What next? With so much depending on exam results these days, it is an anxious time for students and parents as they decide what to do when exams results are not as good as hoped for.
G
oing through the A-Level UCAS clearing process may be an option but you may have to settle for a less prestigious University or for a course that is not what you have set your heart on. An alternative is to take a gap year while retaking some A-levels. St Albans Independent College, founded as St Albans Tutors in 1988, offers a wide range of A-level and GCSE re-sit courses. Students are able to benefit from small class sizes, with a maximum of only 7 students per group and excellent teaching by experienced teachers, many of whom are current examiners. Students are able to flourish within a friendly, supportive, structured and individually tailored educational environment. ‘Students do particularly well when studying A level re-take courses. Last year all results were within the A* to C range, and two thirds were A* to B which far exceeds national results. The College also provides courses, which cater specifically for year 12 students who may have just completed their ASlevels and may feel they could do better at A2 in a more supportive academic environment. Assim Jemal, Principal at St Albans Independent College, states that, “increasingly, students are joining the College at the end of Year 12 if they feel that their results were not what they were expecting. Since they can go to complete their A2s, whilst at the same time retaking their AS-levels along the way. In doing so, they can still go onto complete their A-levels within a year, without the need to repeat their lower sixth”.
Gap Year Students
In recent years there has been a significant growth in the number of

students taking an additional A-level in one year during their gap year (our intensive one-year A-level course). 2015 German Teacher Award
At Bishop’s Stortford College the teachers have been leading by example during this summer’s results season as they are recognised for their inspirational teaching commitment.
I
n July, teachers Hazel Bailey and Pauline Mullender were invited to the 2015 German Teacher Awards at the ‘Sommerfest der deutschen Sprache’ (Summer Party for the German Language) in Cardiff City Hall. The College is extremely pleased to announce that both linguists shared the Lifetime Achievement Award for their dedication to the teaching of German over the years. Presentations were made by German Ambassador Dr Peter Ammon and Minister for Education and Skills, Huw Lewis AM. This is the first time awards for setting standards of excellence have been made to two teachers from the same UK school, which makes it a wonderful achievement. Mrs Bailey has been teaching for 36 years, and has been head of German at the College for 10 years. Mrs Bailey commented “It has been my career’s mission not only to teach the German language, but also to introduce pupils to the rich cultural heritage of the countries where German is spoken. I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges of the classroom, the trips abroad and the thrill of learning that former pupils are using their German in the world of work. Being honoured with this Award is a wonderful way to end my career at the College.’ Mrs Mullender, who joined the College in 1991 and has been Pastoral Deputy Head since 2009, has been teaching German for over 40 years. Mrs Mullender commented “the acquisition of a foreign language skill is an invaluable tool, a philosophy I have greatly enjoyed encouraging pupils to embrace. Recognition by the German Embassy is a much appreciated honour with which to round off an enormously rewarding career.”

Tilly Rasmussen, a young professional dancer, singer and actress, shares her experience of a Bostrom reconstructive surgery to her ankle which was carried out by Mr Rupe Deol at Spire Harpenden Hospital.
am a dancer and so having an ankle injury was really difficult for me as I’ve been dancing since I was eight or nine. I studied at Bodywork in Cambridge for three years, and have been very lucky as my parents have been very supportive while I have been pursuing my career in Musical Theatre. During the second year of my course I damaged three of the major ligaments in my ankle and because I was dancing 9am-6pm Monday to Friday there was never a chance to rest it up fully. My physiotherapist recommended that I book a consultation with Mr Deol, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Harpenden. I live in Harpenden, so coming to the hospital was really easy. After the initial consultation I decided to continue my treatment with Mr Deol as I really got on well with him. Mr Deol came in before my procedure to say hello. He was very reassuring and chilled, which made me feel much more relaxed prior to surgery. After my operation I stayed overnight, and my mum was given a mattress to stay with me. The nurses were fantastic and Mr Deol was amazing. I had a very nice breakfast and then went home that morning after a crutches lesson from a physiotherapist. I had a follow up with Mr Deol a couple of weeks later and he changed the huge cast from surgery to a smaller one. I had planned to go to Barcelona with friends for New Year’s Eve and Mr Deol changed my second cast to an air boot so that I was able to fly. I was back to college within eight weeks of the operation and I changed my course from dance to musical

theatre, so that I could focus on acting and singing while I wasn’t able to dance. Now I am dancing again. In total my recovery took around six months, I graduated last week and am now looking to start my career in musical theatre and hopefully I will one day be on stage in the West End. I wrote a blog throughout my treatment because when I was researching my operation I couldn’t find many patient stories from people who had already had the procedure. I hoped that by sharing my experiences, others might be able to learn more about the surgery. Mr Deol said, “Injury to the lateral ankle ligaments is common, particularly in individuals involved in sport and dance. Often these will not require surgery but focused rehabilitation, supervised by a physiotherapist. ’m a huge fan of false eyelashes, but without the time and patience to have them applied professionally, I was tempted to try what’s been dubbed the next best thing. “A mascara and lash builder, Santhilea Magnetic Lash promises black velvet-like lashes in three steps. After curling, step one is to apply the mascara. Then, while still wet - this is the tricky bit, as you have to be quick - step two is to apply the lash builder.
“Using a small wand, packed with tiny fibres, it goes on a bit like candyfloss, the furry fibres clinging to the wet lashes. It’s tempting to keep applying more, but the trick is to hold back and apply carefully and evenly. While waiting for the lash builder to dry, which takes a couple of minutes, I used a cotton bud to gently wipe away any fibres that have fallen onto my skin. “The final step is to reapply a generous amount of mascara to seal the fibres - the results are
dramatic and my lashes are doubled in size. The effect lasts well through the day, too, and I’m impressed that my lashes don’t look clumpy when I top up with a fresh coat of mascara before heading out in the evening. “As for taking it all off, my usual make-up remover did the trick and, best of all, there’s none of the icky glue residue you get with falsies. replacement dwelling within Greenbelt and Area of Special Landscape Value our proposal is designed to maintain the important features of the existing site, allowing the residents to integrate with their surroundings, reflecting the topography of the site right through to the functional layout of the dwelling, and maintaining the mature landscape so it can continue to thrive. The initial plan was always to demolish the previous building and replace with a house that would meet the families needs as a growing family. It was important for the building to have energy sufficient insulation, reducing the carbon footprint The new design steps down with the fall of the site and uses this level change in conjunction with the modularization of the house to create more intimate areas which emphasize and echo the topographical context of the site. Our clients focused on utilising robust construction details, making sure they were innovative with the use of building materials hence choosing and using copper shingles, siberian larch and weber render, these materials contribute to why the buildings appearance is so striking. The roof was covered with sedum roof as part of assisting the bio-diversity of the site. The full height glazing was solid glass, each panel having it’s own blind depending of the orientation of it, the elegant glazing responds to the buildings surroundings and blurs the division of inside and out. Siberian larch was used to work with the surrounding environment and would subsequently age with the site. In terms of addressing issues of sustainability, we would look to utilize locally sourced materials and carefully consider our selection of construction materials, going as far as using natural paints and stains both internally and externally. In addition, by investigating the integration of heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling systems, we are further aiding the provision of an energy 66 AUGUST 2015
efficient and environmentally friendly scheme. The use of underfloor heating throughout the whole building allows the client to place furniture however they want without any limitations or restrictions. As part of reducing the carbon footprint an air source hear pump was installed. The house is fully equipped with a home automation system, that allows full control of the lighting, heating and security system remotely, therefore making the building a more energy sufficient house. We have created for our client, a building of high quality design and architecture to form a fresh modern single dwelling that respects the sensitive nature of the area and brings back a coherent layout integrated with the site while presenting a modern but timeless design concept. Is it worth paying the premium for aluminium double glazing?
N
owadays UK homeowners have the choice of energy rated aluminium, composite, steel, timber or UPVC replacement windows. The vast majority of customers choose UPVC simply because it does the job and costs the least. Aluminium replacement casement windows on the other hand can be powder coated in any RAL colour, so offer property owners the opportunity to have all sorts of dual colour effects, such as say a “Mock Tudor” exterior with black outer frames and white sashes (or vice-versa) and internal frames to match the decor of the room. UPVC

windows can in theory be sprayed in any RAL colour, but the long term quality of the finish is highly questionable, as painted UPVC is nowhere near as durable as powder coated aluminium, and has been known to fade after a period of time. Whilst aluminium is still available in a silver anodised finish, the vast majority of aluminium windows fabricated in the UK nowadays have a high quality, highly durable powder coated finish instead, plus today’s modern aluminium frames have a polyamide “thermal break”, preventing the formation of condensation on the internal
frames, which sometimes occurred on non-thermally aluminium fenestration products of old. Powder coated aluminium will not fade and will last longer than UPVC over a lifetime. Aluminium is 100% recyclable, so is extremely environmentally friendly, plus being a metal it offers even more security, flexibility and strength than UPVC. Most UK manufacturers should be able to offer customers aluminium windows in a single or dual colour finish, along with matching front doors, back doors, in-line sliding patio doors, French doors, plus sliding and folding doors in any RAL colour in matching profiles. In the case of independent aluminium double glazing manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Windows, all their bespoke casement double glazed windows can be manufactured to be either A, B or C rated, depending on each customers design and thermal requirements., as each aluminium casement window is individually made to order from scratch, so tailor made to each aperture All side opening vents can have easy clean/fire escape
dog-bolts and toughened safety glass to BS6206. High security external glazing beads prevent removal of sealed units/panels from the outside by unwanted intruders. The 24mm wide aluminium double glazed unit is 4mm/16mm/4mm, a combination of low iron outer float or toughened clear or obscure safety glass, a black Swiss V warm edge spacer bar, 90% Argon filled, and an inner soft coat float or toughened glass pane. This glazing specification achieves a centre-pane U Value of 1.2 W/ m2K. The combined U-Value of Hazlemere’s A rated aluminium double glazed windows 1.64 W/m2K. The bottom line is that aluminium profiles offer slimmer sight lines than UPVC profiles, so consequently there is a greater glass area, which delivers more light, solar gain and affords better aesthetics and external views. Unlike UPVC aluminium does not need steel reinforcing so can deliver larger windows, greater openings and wider conservatory roof spans. Also lower quality UPVC products can be prone to fade, especially if in direct
Hazlemere’ s aluminium frames are made from the finest extrusions and feature mechanically jointed corners hinges fitted, which is a requirement under England and Wales Building Regulations for all habitable rooms, especially bedrooms. All opening vents have a lockable night vent facility to allow for the flow of air on warm days whilst keeping the property under lock and key. Hazlemere’ s aluminium frames are made from the finest extrusions and feature mechanically jointed corners, with a choice of a) an attractive sculptured frame appearance or b) square contemporary frame inside and out. Most aluminium manufacturers should be able to offer a choice of aluminium profiles, colour and bead options. Some aluminium profiles also offer “hidden” locking systems, which are much more aesthetically pleasing when vents are in an open position. Hazlemere aluminium casement windows have a 75mm deep (front to back) thermally broken frame by a polyamide strip and a high security multi-locking locking system as standard. All their aluminium doors come with high security
sunlight, whereas powder coated aluminium will not fade, plus expands and contracts far less than UPVC. UPVC windows, doors and conservatories simply cannot offer the range of colour choices as standard that aluminium can, although UPVC as a more mass market product is often less expensive. Aluminium is a superior material, but does cost slightly more, so as with most consumer decisions - the choice is yours! ntoine Christoforou, the charismatic Managing Director of Fusion Residential, is a man burning the candle at both ends.
