OVO’s NEW WRITERS’ SEASON at The Maltings Theatre, St Albans Adam Nichols is the Artistic Director of OVO: “I’m very proud of our New Writers’ Season at The Maltings Theatre,” says Adam. “Our aim is to provide a platform for the actors, directors and creatives who work with us and who have been developing their own new work.

“In April we’re presenting two strong double bills: Hannah Francis Baker’s Banter Jar is smart, funny and looks at issues of self-image which I think are very relevant.

“Rachel Hammond’s Joshua (& Me) is a painful, funny and very musical re-telling of her own experience growing up with an autistic sibling. All the performances will be relaxed.

“Playing Latinx is a very clever one-man performance by Guido Garcia Lueches who’s very popular with Maltings and Roman Theatre audiences. Guido has a gift for observation and comedy which work well in this stinging, funny show. Dinner Theatre is a brilliant social satire by Laura May Price and is the perfect show to conclude our New Writers’ Season.” ovo.org.uk

APRIL 1ST – 2ND DOUBLE BILL of solo performances: BANTER JAR – a solo show written and performed by HANNAH FRANCIS BAKER, one of OVO’s most popular acting talents. She performed in director Adam Nichols’ criticallyacclaimed production of The 39 Steps at the Maltings Theatre in 2020 and Peter Pan at the Alban Arena, and the outdoor Roman Theatre in 2021.

Hannah first performed Banter Jar at the Bridgehouse Theatre in Penge, south east London, in 2021.

“Banter Jar’s a tragicomedy about love and mental illness,” says Hannah. “It questions the line between being kind and being responsible for another person’s life.” The play follows Hannah as she grows up and discovers new joys, pains and questions about happiness.

APRIL 1ST – 2ND JOSHUA (AND ME) is a solo show written and performed by RACHEL HAMMOND who graduated from Mountview as an actor and musician in 2018. Joshua (and Me) is Rachel’s debut play: “It’s about being a sibling to someone who’s autistic and how his world impacted my world as we were growing up together.” It’s a study of sibling love and incorporates laughter and original music.

Rachel’s recent credits include Swallows and Amazons (York Theatre Royal), Pericles (Riding Lights Theatre Company in York) and Much Ado About Nothing (Northern Broadsides, Halifax).

APRIL 8TH-9TH DOUBLE BILL PLAYING LATINX written and performed by Guido Garcia Lueches, actor, poet and theatre maker from Uruguay with a highly developed knack for observational comedy. “It’s about questioning the lengths we go to in order to fit in,” says Guido. “As an actor from Latin America trying to find my place in the UK theatre scene should I do funny accents and polish up my salsa rhythms and at what point does that stereotype start playing me?”

In Dinner Theatre Noah just wants a few things; he wants to introduce his girlfriend to his Grandma, he wants to blow his Grandma away with his culinary skills so that she’ll back off and let him live his life the way he wants to…but unexpected guests keep interrupting the dinner.

And Noah doesn’t actually have a girlfriend.

Because he’s gay.

Says Beth: “Laura and I have been working really closely with the actors involved to develop the script through improvisations and discussions which Laura has then edited and curated with her own natural flair into the iteration of the show we will be presenting at The Maltings Theatre.”

Laura May Price is an actor and writer who trained at Identity School of Acting. Dinner Theatre is her first full-length piece and premiered at the Clapham Fringe in 2021. Laura is dedicated to telling fresh comedic stories about queer life, whilst rewriting outdated stereotyped narratives of LGBTQ+ relationships, and is passionate about shining a light on everyday lived experiences of queer people. Credits include: Motley Crew Theatre’s The Highwayman, Telltale Theatre’s Adrift and the short film Lungs.

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE TO BE MARKED BY STREET PARTY IN ST ALBANS

A

free street party is to be held in St Albans City Centre to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee during the June bank holiday.

More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the St Albans Platinum Party to mark Her Majesty’s 70 years of service as the Monarch.

Among the attractions will be live music and dozens of market stalls selling takeaway food and drink with plenty of outdoor seating for people to get together.

St Albans City and District Council is organising the community event scheduled for Thursday 2 June when the whole country is being encouraged to join together for the milestone celebrations.

The Platinum Party will be centred on St Peter’s Street, which will be closed to traffic, and run from 3pm to 10pm.

There will be an action-packed entertainment programme which will include something for people of all ages and celebrate the diverse society the UK has become during the Queen’s reign.

Children’s activities will include games, face painting, circus skills workshops and a magic show.

The fun event will culminate with a beacon lighting at 9.15pm. Around the same time, some 1,500 other beacons will be lit at major cities and other locations, including Buckingham Palace, in the UK and overseas territories.

his spring equinox, The Ivy St Albans Brasserie launches a delectable new menu embracing the flavours of spring.

With a sense of freshness and renewal, guests will be taken on a journey of rediscovery with a selection of delights featuring imgredients that the new season brings to our tables.

Launching on the official first day of spring, diners will be able to enjoy a series of seasonal favourites that spotlight the best of British ingredients. The new menu will feature a number of artisanal British suppliers, with new dishes including Garden Pea & Nettle Soup (£6.95), Grilled Asparagus with Szechuan mayonnaise, capers, flaked almonds, quail’s egg and watercress (£8.50), and a renewed selection of steaks, all truly capturing the essence of the changing seasons.

Those with a sweet tooth will be able to enjoy a new Black Bee Honey and White Chocolate Cheesecake (£9.25), featuring UK-based Black Bee Honey and accompanied by mango sorbet, honeycomb and edible flowers.

Chris Barnes, Beekeeper and founder of Black Bee Honey says: “We were delighted when The Ivy chose to use our honey for their spring menu.

It’s a mixed floral variety sourced from hives in Northamptonshire. This honey was selected for its light, sweet flavour and runny quality, making it ideal for desserts such as this.”

Wander around the Sundial Garden, West Parterre and Old Palace Garden adjoining the Tudor Palace each Thursday to Sunday. Trees will be coming in to leaf, daffodils will be in full bloom and our little Easter Bunnies will pop their heads up in the Woodland Walk. By the middle of April, Bluebells will be carpeting the upper section of our woodland garden.

Lord and Lady Salisbury’s private East Garden is also open to visitors each Thursday. This

part of the garden has elegant parterres, topiary and rare plants, which are a delight for the gardening enthusiast and for those wishing to spend a quiet time in idyllic surroundings.

Hatfield House itself will open to from 19th May – 29th August. Visitors can enjoy a house steeped in over 400 years of history. Built by Robert Cecil, in the grounds where Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood, Hatfield House is home to centuries of historical treasures collected by the Cecil family.

THE ROMAN THEATRE OPEN AIR FESTIVAL 2022 24th May – 21st August 2022

VO’s production of ‘A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM’ here opens the festival on May 24th at 7.30pm; The Dream runs to June 11th and is codirected by Adam Nichols and Matt Strachan.

OVO’s musical adaptation of The Dream will transport audiences to the glittering, hustling, hipswivelling age of classic disco!

In the beige 1970s in a down-at-heel working men’s club in northern England, pot washer Nick Bottom dreams of a music career. Meanwhile, Mia, Helen, Dean and Andy are snogging, drinking, fighting, and arguing, much to the disapproval of their parents.

Until… a mystical figure appears and they’re all transported to a dream world where an enchanted palace offers games of music, dreams, and fantasy.

But will Nick find his voice, and will the lovers find a partner before the music stops?

This hugely entertaining, musical re-mix of Shakespeare’s evergreen romantic comedy features some of the best dance music ever produced, from the likes of Gloria Gaynor, Bee Gees, Donna Summer, The Jacksons and many more, played by a live band under the stars.

Charlie Mullins - What’s next?

A

fter selling his firm Pimlico Plumbers for £125m last year, Britain’s flushest tradesman Charlie Mullins, the man who advised David Cameron and George Osborne on business matters during their time in government, could have retired to his lavish home in Marbella and enjoyed the good life.

But Charlie is not done yet, he’s trying his hand at being a media mogul, as Chairman and financial backer of the newly relaunched Great British Radio. He’s partnered with veteran broadcaster and comedian Mike Osman under a unifying vision: remove the news bulletins and get Britain smiling again through humour, positivity, interesting topics, celebrity guests and great music.

Pimlico Plumbers was considered a London institution and you once said that you would never sell the company, what changed your mind?

I’m proud of what I built from nothing at Pimlico Plumbers. It was a hugely successful operation, but I’ve only got one life and there’s so much I 34 APRIL 2022

want to do. Being a full time boss or even the chairman as I was for the last few years wasn’t going to allow me the time, so the only way was to sell the company.

How did you become known as the plumbers to the stars?

We didn’t award ourselves that moniker, other people did. Do I like a nice suit and a celeb hang out? Totally! I’m 100% guilty of liking the limelight, and if people ask me what I think about things, I’m happy to explain my views, be it down the pub or on Question Time. Certainly plenty of famous people called us up when they needed their bogs and drain unblocked, or the heating was on the blink, but I think it was more because we would always turn up any time, day or night and work until the job was done.

Tell us about your next venture - Great British Radio.

Great British Radio is all about addressing a problem real people face. These 24 hour news

cycles do no good for our mood and the past six years have been all Brexit, then Covid and now the regrettable situation in Ukraine. With Mike Osman at the helm of Great British Radio we have a very funny man who knows how to tap into the public psyche. We’ve agreed we want to make people laugh every ten minutes instead of carrying any scheduled news bulletins. Celebrity guests feature and interviews with ordinary people to shine a light on important topics and bring positivity and humour to our lives at a time when it’s needed more than ever. Great guests, great music and a barrel of laughs. That’s what Great British Radio will deliver, without the noise.

You are also supporting emerging British musical talent, who are you most excited about?

The act I’m most excited about right now is a female singer called RaRa. I discovered her when I was in Dubai in 2021 and signed her for a gig I was organising for my staff at Proud Cabaret in London. I was hugely impressed with her talent and then I heard she had written and recorded a charity song (Glitter) for a little girl who was battling cancer. We are currently working on the UK release of her debut album and some recording and TV opportunities in LA and Nashville.

Will you resurrect your plans to become London Mayor in 2024, and if so, what would you bring to London?

I’m seriously thinking about running.

It’s about time Londoners got a mayor for whom the job was not a stepping stone to something bigger, a Londoner, a non-politician and someone with common sense deciding the policies and actions. I would be the man in the street when in office. I’ve always been a fighter for the underdog, and after Brexit and Covid and the last decade, London needs a champion to fight its corner. I would run on a ticket of free travel for apprentices, scrapping the congestion charge and taking another good, hard look at how cycle lanes affect the traffic flow and car accidents throughout London.

Who inspires you?

Margaret Thatcher was elected as Prime Minister in 1979, the same year I started Pimlico Plumbers,

and she has always been my idol. For the first time people who spoke like me were encouraged to start their own business and make money, not just work for wages forever, living from week to week.

I know the Iron Lady wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I worshipped her because she empowered working people with the belief that we could succeed in business and life. And that’s why when she died I had a picture of her put on the door of every Pimlico Plumbers van as a tribute.

The programme will accompany our exhibition Henry Moore: The Sixties opening 1 April 2022; a fascinating insight into Moore’s life and work during a pivotal decade in his career. In the 1960s, Moore embraced new materials and techniques which enabled him to work on an increasingly monumental scale. He incorporated a greater degree of abstraction in his work and satisfied an enormous global demand for his art, which sometimes generated controversy. This exhibition will feature rarely seen sculptures, drawings, graphics and a wealth of archive material drawn entirely from our collections to illuminate the innovation of an artist at the height of his powers.

Of the 30 sculptures on show, highlights include the never-before-exhibited plaster for Large Spindle Piece 1968 and the working models for some of Moore’s most important, international commissions. Over twenty drawings and graphics will reveal Moore’s incredible use of colour and new materials such as felt-pens.

Rothamsted Manor, Harpenden

T

he Rothamsted Estate in Harpenden, Hertfordshire is home to Rothamsted Manor. A beautiful Grade 1 listed building that has recently been reopened as a venue. The first record of the Rothamsted estate was made in 1212 when it was owned by Henry Gubion. It was bought in 1623 by Anne Wittewronge - the widow of Jacob Wittewronge - on behalf of her son John, who was then 4 years old. John became Lord of the Manor of Rothamsted in 1639 and the estate continued to be passed through the family until John Bennet Lawes (founder of Rothamsted Experimental Station, now Rothamsted Research) was born in the house on 28th December 1814.

Sir John Bennet Lawes and Sir Henry Gilbert together developed a fundamental understanding of plant nutrition and produced the world’s first commercial chemical fertilizers. The house, whilst used predominantly as a family home since records began, was requisitioned for the use of the military in WWII and became a listening post, recording and feeding messages to Bletchley Park for decoding. After the war it was converted into accommodation for staff and visitors to Rothamsted until 2020, when the ground floor was opened as a venue for the community, where guests can enjoy afternoon teas, murder mystery evenings, or book the venue for a private function.

Filled with impressive features that have remained largely untouched since the 1600s, the Manor will impress guests and provide plenty of inspiration for any event. The external gardens are taken care of by the onsite grounds team and are currently being prepared for another summer season. The Chef and his team have been creating some wonderful new menus with local suppliers, to create a truly unique experience.

he Berkeley’s Prêt-à-Portea celebrates the Platinum Jubilee of the ultimate fashionista serving up three special creations, each representing one of Her Majesty’s most iconic fashion signatures.

First, one of the Queen’s most summery hats has been crafted with lime cheesecake, fresh lemon compote and almond sponge. This is finished with a flowery garnish. British label Launer London has long been Her Majesty’s handbag brand of choice.

Here, The Berkeley pastry team pay homage with a blueberry Victoria sponge iced with mirroir glaze, sandwiched with ivoire chocolate.

Finally, perhaps the most famous regal accessory – the crown - which has been created in vanilla biscuit and iced with burgundy, red and white (aptly named) royal icing.

A mocktail or cocktail offering will pay homage to the Queen. ‘Superbloom’ (named after the flower installation taking place at the Tower of London for the Jubilee) is a blend of non-alcoholic gin and earl grey tea (nodding to the Queen’s favourite tipples) with sweet violette bitters, rhubarb and raspberry tonic. hen you think of women in science, some key names might come to mind, such as Marie Curie, Mae Jemison or Sarah Gilbert. But this is just scratching the surface: there are countless other women working to find cures for illnesses, teaching future generations about gravity or making coding seem as easy as breathing.

Women across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) share their advice on how parents can positively encourage daughters into these fields…

Boost your daughter’s confidence Tell your daughters to “go for it”, says Dr Ems Lord, director of NRICH (nrich.maths.org), the University of Cambridge’s maths outreach programme. “You’ll never be bored if you love a challenge, and the thrill you get from solving a problem never wains.”

Stress the importance of not giving up, advises Rachel Youngman, deputy chief executive at the Institute of Physics (iop.org). It can be intimidating entering a male-dominated field, but it is important for young people to realise “you are just as worthy of a place on a STEM course as a

It’s also worth challenging your own stereotypes, with Youngman saying: “Leave your preconceptions at the door, and acknowledge that your idea of what it means to study physics may not be an accurate one.”

“I think I was lucky, because my parents were very supportive,” says Dr Sadie Jones, outreach leader in astronomy at the University of Southampton. “I would say stuff like, ‘I want to be an astronaut’, and they would say: ‘Why not?’”

Reach out to organisations supporting women in STEM As a parent, it can be hard to answer questions about STEM if you’re not involved in the field – but there are plenty of networks that can help.

Pioneer (joely-to.wixsite.com/pioneer) is a support network for girls wanting to pursue maths, set up by Joely To, who’s a student herself. It provides work experience with top companies, and gives girls the opportunity to connect with female mentors in the industry.

You could also reach out to Women In Tech (women-in-tech.org) – an organisation founded

by Ayumi Moore Aoki to empower women to enter STEM, or The Blackett Lab Family Group (theblackettlabfamily.com) – a collective of black physicists.

Jones says parents should encourage their daughters to get involved in the area they’re

interested in. “I managed to get a week of work experience at a university,” she says, recommending “emailing people and just seeing if you can shadow someone, even if it’s only for a few days, just so you can get a feel of what the job is like”.

Encourage curiosity from a young age Lord says you don’t need to purchase expensive STEM tools or resources to spark curiosity in your child’s mind. “If families are looking to support their daughters, I’d encourage them to be more curious about their world when out and about,” she says. “Take time to notice the world around you, wonder at what you see and discuss what else you’d like to discover.”

Vanessa Oakes is doing her PhD in biomedicine, and is a clinical instructor in anatomic pathology at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (vetmed.vt.edu). Her advice is: “Take her to the zoo, take her to museums, spend time outdoors looking at grass and leaves and twigs, let her ask what they’re made of and how they grow. Every STEM field is about asking questions first, and finding answers only second.”

Advocate for STEM opportunities at school Schools can play a major role in a student’s development. “I remember when I was doing my GCSEs, the teacher actually showed us a video about supermassive black holes and I remember being so fascinated by that – and that’s what I ended up doing my PHD in,” says Jones. She now gives educational talks in schools, highlighting the contributions made by female scientists.

he Academic Scholarship programme at Queenswood gives the academically gifted a sense of identity, pride and additional purpose as they reach towards ever higher levels of achievement. We look for, and encourage, intellectual curiosity, debate and a willingness to engage with new ideas and points of view.

Over the course of each term, members of the academic staff set stimulus material on a topic related to, but not covered by, the School’s schemes of work. Scholars have the opportunity to discuss the theme with their peers in universitystyle seminars. For instance, they might research the Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence programme, the golden discs aboard the Pioneer and Voyager probes, and the scale of space and human radio emissions, leading to a scientific and philosophical debate about whether we are alone in the universe. Other research topics have included the purpose of poetry, the meaning of heroism in classical and contemporary culture, and an introduction to philosophy.

At the end of each seminar cycle, Scholars have three weeks to complete a research project related to their theme. They can submit their work in a wide range of formats – diaries, vlogs and artefacts are just as valid as traditional essays.

Compassion and Community at St Columba’s College

t Columba’s College Sixth Form students collected more than one tonne of muchneeded items for the Borehamwood Foodbank during March.

In total, their Foodbank Appeal produced 1,202.7kg, a truly fantastic amount that will go a very long way to helping those in most need in the area.

Julian Milner, from the Borehamwood Foodbank thanked the Sixth Form students for all their hard work: “Thank you and the whole school once again for donating such a vast quantity of items for our Foodbank.

“You clearly did a wonderful job in galvanising such strong support for our Charity. This was extremely generous of all the pupils, staff and parents.”

The Borehamwood Foodbank is part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK. It provides three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred there in crisis.

Families and staff at St Columba’s also organised a collection of much-needed items for Ukrainian refugees in March.

St Columba’s Ukraine Appeal was shared with current families, alumni, local schools and houses of worship. People were asked to donate hygiene products, baby supplies, bedding, and towels.

family, two 22-tonne lorries transported donations from the school to Romania, from where they were taken by minibuses into Poland.

Many St Columba’s parents volunteered their time to sort and pack up the donations, both in College and at the collection point in Westminster Lodge car park. Students from the Prep and Senior School helped to carry boxes and load the lorries.

Mobile Phones in School – is Banning the Answer?

Y

oung people’s relationships with their mobile phones have changed during the pandemic and, many would argue, not for the better. As a result, many schools have started to ban their use altogether, but how do we redress the balance and nurture the right behaviours in a way that is also sensitive to the needs and pressures young people face today?

My school has a ‘no mobile phone’ policy. As a result, it is unusual to see a student using their mobile phone during the school day. This initiative is incredibly popular with our parents and staff, but it is also well respected by our students. That said, I do have concerns about how we model good behaviour with phone usage outside of school too. As parents, I feel we have a duty to our young people to help them find a healthy balance between screens and the physical world.

Many parents with teenage children will have understandably struggled to maintain routines and rules around mobile phone usage during the previous lockdowns. During this period, mobile phones became the main source of communication for the young. As such, teenagers have overall, enjoyed or perhaps in some cases, 64 APRIL 2022

endured, more unfettered access.

Given our school policy and the impact of lockdown we have started to tackle this issue with staff and parents through training and pastoral webinars. We must consider carefully how we encourage and balance screen-free time. After all, it isn’t just teenagers that have used their phones more in the pandemic; we have all found distraction, comfort and social interaction 24/7 through mobile phones. The average teenager will be quick to highlight the hypocrisy of your overuse when challenging theirs, so modelling the right behaviour from the top down has to be a priority.

Tackling the overuse and the need the phone fulfils must be the first aim. All of which will involve time and engagement. We also need more open conversations at school and home about the behaviour that we might not like. We need to do this in a way that attempts to understand, empathise and support our young people, outlining concerns and consequences, rather than offering sanction or judgement. Real life cases, anonymised, are always more powerful, such as highlighting the health risks around deterioration of eyesight and poor physical health. stmargarets-school.org.uk

WATFORD FC STAR APPEALS FOR FUNDS FOR WOMEN’S CENTRE

he chief executive officer of Watford Women’s Centre celebrated International Women’s Day with a final push to highlight their fundraising appeal.

Fiona Miller revealed the Centre only needs another £5,000 to start work on a major refurbishment to make the building in Market Street safe and comfortable to cope with increasing workloads.

She said: “I’ve been stunned and shocked by the generosity of people who have contributed both large and small amounts to our fundraiser.

I would like to thank Alan Day Group, TK Maxx, Corona Energy and local councillors for their wonderful support and backing without whom this wouldn’t be possible.”

She was supported by Watford ladies football star Adekite Fatuga-Dada,25,and Saracens RFC general manager Laura Eddie.

The centre which was founded 32 years ago to provide life changing services for women many of whom have suffered domestic abuse.

Over the past 18 months they have raised £71,000 through a variety of fundraising activities

and donations from the public and sponsors.

Adekite Fatuga-Dada of Watford FC said: “If anyone has any spare money, I would ask them to dig deep in their pockets and support Watford’s Women’s Centre.

Former Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu, MBE, donated a signed shirt to show her support which will be hung in the Centre after refurbishment.

Laura Eddie urged more people to come forward and work as volunteers saying:” We are supporting Watford’s Women Centre by raising awareness of the fantastic work they’re doing.

“They are making a huge impact in the local community, giving women skills and empowering them to pick up the phone, be brave, and be empowered to make decisions.

Kate wears emerald green outfit to celebrate St Patrick’s Day with Irish Guards

T

he Duke and Duchess of Cambridge celebrated St Patrick’s Day with the Irish Guards, but it was an officer’s young daughter who stole the show with her antics.

Kate was fittingly dressed in an emerald green outfit for the couple’s visit to the 1st Battalion Irish Guards for the St Patrick’s Day Parade at Mons Barracks in Aldershot in Hampshire.

William is Colonel of the Irish Guards and the event was the first time the Cambridges have been able to celebrate the annual event with the officers and soldiers from the regiment since the pandemic began.

During the ceremony, 20-month-old Gaia Money grabbed two bouquets from the duchess and a smiling Kate said: “Shall we swap. Now you have both of them.”

When Gaia’s father, Lieutenant Colonel Rob Money, placed his bearskin hat over his daughter’s head, Kate said: “That’s so sweet. Do you fit inside it.”

The duchess, wearing a green coat by Laura Green and hat by Lock & Co, pinned a sprig of shamrock on the Irish Guards mascot – a twoyear-old Irish Wolfhound.

The dog, called Turlough Mor, also known as Seamus, and handler Drummer Adam Walsh, stood to attention on the parade ground.

Kate wore shamrock on her jacket and William, dressed in a military coat, had a sprig on his cap for the couple’s visit.

The duchess handed baskets filled with shamrock sprigs to regimental leaders to hand out to the ranks and she chatted and smiled as she presented officers with the plant – a symbol of Ireland.

She told them: “Good morning, have some shamrock. Happy St Patrick’s Day.” The Cambridges begin a tour of the Caribbean on Saturday which will see them visit Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas.

After the visit Gaia’s grandmother Mary Money said: “They both said about how much they are looking forward to Jamaica and Gaia is half 80 APRIL 2022

“They expressed regret as they had been unable to see the regiment for many years because of serving in Iraq and South Sudan and Covid last year. So it was a great reunion.”

“I was very excited as this was the first time in three years we have seen them.

“Seamus behaved himself. I was afraid he was going to let us down (but) I was more nervous than he was. He was fantastic.”

he Shape Up Programme is a high quality, free to attend, community weight management service delivered

by Watford FC’s Community Sport & Education Trust, and since 2014 we have delivered outstanding weight loss results to over 2600 Men in Hertfordshire and Harrow. Through our combined programme of fun physical activity and food education, we help people by giving them the tools and knowledge they need to sustain a healthy lifestyle for the long term.

So why Shape Up? Obesity is national problem, and one that is growing fast. Currently 28% of Men in the UK are obese and this is predicted to rise to 47% by 2030 and 60% by 2050! In Hertfordshire the numbers are equally troubling with 67% of adult males currently being overweight or obese.

Several medical issues are associated with Obesity including Diabetes, Cardiac Disease and Cancer.

Shape Up aims to provide a non-intimidating and non-judgmental weight loss environment where participants can start to regain control of their lifestyle behaviours. We keep sessions fun and informative, and we do not ask participants to follow specific diets. This is not a football based programme, and you do not need any base level of fitness to take part in the programme effectively.

THE CLEMENTINE CHURCHILL HOSPITAL TO SPONSOR WORK VISAS FOR UKRAINIAN REFUGEES

he Clementine Churchill Hospital in Harrow today announces it will seek to sponsor visas for Ukrainian refugees and their families.

The Clementine Churchill Hospital is part of Circle Health Group, the largest independent healthcare provider in the country, which is collectively sponsoring up to 500 work visas for Ukrainian refugees, creating high-quality jobs in their 52 sites across England, Scotland and Wales.

As one of the UK’s largest employers, with a national footprint that covers every corner of the country and 10,000 existing staff, Circle Health Group announced the move ahead of to the Government’s new sponsorship programme for businesses to provide visas and employment opportunities for Ukrainian refugees.

It’s with similar abandon that designers have begun concocting bold new forms for everyday things. A floor lamp that looks like a snow globe.

Or else a sofa shaped like an iceberg.

The best part about these designs is that they tend to go where other styles can’t. The VL Studio Floor Lamp, for example, fits perfectly well on a bookcase. While the Albero Bookcase by Poltrona Frau can also serve as a bonafide room divider.

The classics reloaded This season, not even the classics could escape this whimsical impulse with serendipitous new finishes being unveiled on everything from Le Corbusier’s LC6 Table to Flos’ 265 Wall Light.

The desire seems to be less about reinvention and more an investigation into how we can make these works as fresh as possible — including updating any lacquers so that they tread more lightly on the Earth.

Design goes full circle The last story is one we’ve been tracking ever since 2017. Call it what you will, curves are everywhere.

And they’re not just restricted to soft furnishings, either.

Amid the cornucopia of sinuous styles are loopthe-loop dining chairs. Sweeping desks. And even the odd circular bookcase.

Part of the impetus for this sumptuous styling is almost certainly traceable to all the undulating shapes being explored in the Metaverse.
