STEP UP FOR HOSPICE TREKKING CHALLENGE

Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care is delighted to announce the launch of its first ever overseas trekking challenge. Taking place in March 2025, Trek Vietnam is set to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those looking to combine travel and adventure with raising vital funds to support local hospice care.

The 10-day challenge, taking place in March 2025, will see a group of intrepid explorers trek through the beautiful Vietnamese countryside as well as volunteering at a local community project to support palliative care facilities in the country.

Cat has already signed up to the challenge. She explains: “When I saw an advert for Trek Vietnam I just knew it was for me. Rennie Grove Peace cared for my husband, Martin, at the end of his life last year so this is a way of both giving something back to the charity and really pushing myself. Martin spent his last two weeks in the Peace Hospice Inpatient Unit and the staff there just couldn’t do enough to

support both him and me.

“I’ve always fancied doing a challenge like this and I’m not getting any younger. So if I don’t do it now, I never will! Having the chance to take on this trek while raising money to make sure other families can benefit from the same care we received, is an opportunity I couldn’t miss.

“I know the trek will really push me so it will be great to do it as part of a team. I’d encourage anybody else who is looking for an adventurous way to see a bit of the world while challenging themselves, to sign up and join me!”

Emma Stewart, Events Manager at Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care, says: “Trek Vietnam is a totally new event for us and we’re delighted to have people like Cat already on the team. Now is the perfect time to sign up as there’s still plenty of time to focus on the fundraising and training elements of the challenge.”

Rediscovered Guercino painting to go on public display for first time

Waddesdon Manor, until 27 October. By Jamel Smith

Anewly unearthed 17th-century painting by the artist Guercino is headed for public display for the first time at Waddesdon Manor.

The painting, Moses, depicts the Old Testament figure in a “gesture of praise”, raising his head and hands to connect with God.

It will be revealed alongside four other Guercino paintings, which include King David, the Samian Sibyl, Libyan Sibyl and the Cumaean Sibyl with a Putto.

This is the first time all of these paintings have been together in one location since leaving the artist’s studio in 1651.

Crafted by the Italian painter between 1618 and 1619, Moses was in the possession of a 17th-century Roman Catholic cardinal and his descendants until the 1800s when its whereabouts became unknown.

It is thought the painting may have been relocated to France by art dealers, where it was rediscovered in 2022.

Pippa Shirley, the director of Waddesdon, said: “We are so excited to be able to display this group of paintings in a first for Guercino at Waddesdon, and to put a new acquisition on display also for the first time.

“The arrival of Moses felt irresistible because it appeared just as we were planning this exhibition, with the great painting of King David at its heart.

“Bringing the two together with the group of sibyls creates an incredibly rich context of contrast and comparison, allowing us an insight into the arc of Guercino’s extraordinary career.”

Born in 1591, Guercino was among the most sought-after Italian painters of his era, enjoying a successful career producing hundreds of artworks under the patronage of popes, foreign courts, and dukes.

He was renowned for his baroque painting style, characterised by dramatic compositions, intense emotions, rich colours, and intricate details.

“The sibyls in particular are emblematic of his work, as he returned to the subject of these mysterious and powerful female seers again and again,” Ms Shirley said.

“I hope that they will create the same fascination for our visitors.

“Because the way in which all of these paintings embody ideas of faith and foresight, power and prophesy and how the past relates to the future is as relevant to us now as it was in the uncertain 17th-century world.

“We are immensely grateful to the National Gallery and His Majesty the King and the Royal Collection for so generously enabling this potent encounter.”

Moses and the four other paintings will be publicly displayed at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire, until 27 October.

RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW PREVIEW

21 – 25 May 2024

The greatest flower show on earth returns to Royal Hospital Chelsea with stunning garden designs, gorgeous floral displays and exclusive shopping. Over a century old, and RHS Chelsea still delivers new ideas in horticulture – drawing a global crowd and is the ‘haute-couture’ of the international gardening scene.

RHS has revealed the sensational garden line-up for 2024, representing the pinnacle of horticultural excellence with cutting-edge design, inspiration, colour and innovation. Expect to be dazzled!

2024 SHOW GARDENS INCLUDE:

• St James’s Piccadilly: Imagine the World to be Different - designed by Robert Myers, built by Stewart Landscape Construction. Paying homage to the revitalising influence of urban green spaces, the garden symbolises a message of hope and recovery while igniting the imagination of future

generations to envision a different world. Upon entering through an archway reminiscent of the proposed gateways leading to the churchyard at St James’s Piccadilly, this tranquil space serves as a sanctuary for urban dwellers and city wildlife.

• WaterAid Garden - designed by Tom Massey & Je Ahn, built by Landscape Associates. The garden explores the challenges presented by an ever-changing climate. It focuses on sustainable water management and features a colourful array of plant species designed to deal with varying amounts of rainfall. The structure harvests every drop of rainfall, filtering and storing this precious resource for drinking and irrigating while also slowing flow and providing shade.

WaterAid Garden, designed by Tom Massey and Je Ahn

• The National Autistic Society Gardendesigned by Sophie Parmenter & Dido Milne, built by Landform Consultants. The Garden aims to capture an autistic person’s everyday experience of the world, using walls of cork to create spaces dedicated to different types of social interaction - at work, with friends and family, with partners, and with ourselves - highlighting a strategy called ‘masking’ – a potentially draining process involving consciously or unconsciously hiding autistic characteristics in order to fit in.

SANCTUARY GARDENS INCLUDE:

• The Boodles Garden - designed by Catherine MacDonald, built by Gadd Brothers Trees & Landscapers. The Boodles Garden is a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the National Gallery. Taking inspiration from paintings at the gallery, it evokes the spirit of many significant artworks. Subtle links to prominent paintings at the gallery will pervade the garden’s design and planting, providing visitors a visual treat where nature represents art, and vice versa.

• The Freedom from Torture Garden: A Sanctuary for Survivors - designed by John Warland & Emma O’Connell, built by Living Landscapes. A place of sanctuary, peace and hope where horticultural therapy calms, heals and restores survivors of torture on their journey to recovery. The garden is designed to be a curvaceous and immersive space, where visitors can engage in therapy one-to-one, with family, or in a group. The communal bread oven brings survivors together to share stories and build new friendships.

THE GREAT PAVILION

A fresh floral feast! An oasis of colour and scents with some of the world’s finest growers and nurseries exhibiting impressive displays and offering expert advice. Nothing compares to being surrounded by the colour and fragrance in the Pavilion - a truly unique experience. The Discovery Zone is home to educational exhibits promoting the latest discoveries in horticultural science. Visitors can explore inspiring displays, many of which champion the benefits of gardening and it can combat climate change or improve mental wellbeing.

MEET THE CHEF

Karolina Sawras is Head Chef at The Hub on Verulam in St Albans.

Did you always think you’d become a chef? No, it really wasn’t a dream of mine as a child, although i’ve always loved watching cookery shows on TV. I’d love seeing how the chefs would put recipes together and add their own flare to a dish. It was only as a teenager in Wroclaw, Poland, that I started to find work in small restaurants and fell in love with cooking. I built my career from there, before coming to the UK in 2018 and working in further restaurants to gain experience and broaden my skillset. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some amazingly talented chefs since coming to the UK, who’ve inspired and taught me along the way.

What favourite dishes linger from your childhood?

Beetroot soup & Polish dumplings, made by my mum. It was always served at Christmas and rather than waking up excited for gifts, I’d wake up excited for beetroot soup. I like anything with earthy flavours and the dumplings would be stuffed with different fillings each time. I’ve actually been lucky enough to serve it to some of our guests since coming to the UK, and people are always surprised that it tastes so good.

How would you describe The Hub on Verulam?

A social space for everyone to find what they need. There’s such a variety of events and offerings going on here at any one time, I’m not sure I could ever go back to working in a traditional setting again. We get to enjoy the atmosphere whilst working in the Open Kitchen, rather than being tucked away and not seeing the guests enjoy what’s been prepared. It feels very special.

Who are your culinary heroes?

I prefer to follow up and coming Chefs now, rather than the headliners. For all the negatives of social media, the culinary community is incredible. Clare Smyth’s work is like art, she’s a big inspiration at the moment.

If I was dining at The Hub on Verulam, what should I eat?

Rope grown Cornish mussels with melted leeks & nduja, Ras el hanout spiced lamb with Israeli cous cous & the mango & buttermilk pannacotta with candied pistachios. Delicious! thehubonverulam.com

ALL-NEW LEXUS LBX: EVERYDAY EXTRAORDINARY

The LBX is set to be a game-changer for Lexus.

The smallest Lexus yet, it is a selfcharging hybrid electric crossover that’s designed to be accessible and easy to live with, combining high quality with a casual feel. It offers much more than might be expected from a car in its class, embracing advanced technologies and making no compromise in the distinguishing Lexus qualities of luxury craftsmanship and omotenashi hospitality for everyone on board.

The driving experience is central to the LBX’s appeal and extensive efforts have been invested to ensure the constant control, comfort and confidence of the Lexus Driving Signature are delivered in a small car package.

The new powertrain, a self-charging 1.5-litre hybrid electric system, is tuned for rewarding performance, with powerful, linear acceleration from start-up. This helps deliver low-speed agility that’s well-suited to the demands of urban driving. A new bi-polar nickel-metal hydride hybrid battery provides greater responsiveness from a smaller and lighter package, while extensive measures to address road noise and vibration ensure the kind of calm and quiet on-board experience appropriate

for a premium model.

The LBX’s styling establishes a new Lexus identity with a “Resolute Look” front design that reinterprets the famous spindle grille. While the exterior dimensions are more compact than any other Lexus, the look is muscular and powerful. Inside, the emphasis is on driver-engagement with a focused driver’s cockpit based on Lexus’s tazuna concept. Inspired by a rider’s precise use of the reins to control a horse (the meaning of tazuna in Japanese), controls and information sources are arranged so that only small movements of hand and eye are required for operation, keeping the driver’s attention focused on the road. The cabin has a light, open feel with excellent visibility and an instrument panel that wraps around smoothly into the door panels.

The LBX grade line-up is designed to give owners the freedom to express their own tastes, style and character, true to Lexus’s commitment to “making luxury personal”, with a range of different styling details, colours, textures and finishes.

The All-New LBX is available now at Lexus Hatfield.

St Margaret’s School Introduces Nutrition Workshops for its Youngest Pupils

Independent day and boarding school in Bushey, St Margaret’s, has launched weekly nutrition workshops for its pupils in Reception and Year one. The children, aged four to six years, have been participating in a series of fun, inspiring sessions which help them to identify a wide range of seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs, while learning why they should include them in their diet. The sessions aim to capitalise on the early window of opportunity to establish lifelong healthy eating habits.

Fruit and vegetables are the cornerstone of a healthy diet, containing essential vitamins and minerals to support a child’s rapidly growing body and brain. By introducing these workshops from a young age, St Margaret’s is keen to boost understanding and recognition amongst its pupils around healthy diets, delivered via fun, enriching experiences.

Studies have shown that if a child understands why certain foods are beneficial, they are more likely to eat them. Nutritionist, Caroline Mentzer, who has worked in the field of children’s health for over two decades, is running the sessions at St Margaret’s

“By introducing these workshops from a young age, St Margaret’s is keen to boost understanding and recognition amongst its pupils around healthy diets, delivered via fun, enriching experiences”

School. She explained, “I’ve found that young children are really interested in learning how certain foods can benefit them. Simply telling children to eat five a day because it’s good for them, does little for their motivation. Yet most children can tell you that carrots help you to see in the dark. Through these regular workshops they are slowly but surely, making the connection between eating real food and experiencing good health.”

The weekly workshops use a combination of storytelling, colour coding and craft activities to emphasise key messages around healthy food. The stories usually follow an interactive discussion with the children about a particular food, and then they participate in a craft activity related to it.

Emma Gray, Head at St Margaret’s Junior School commented, “The children are really enjoying the sessions with Caroline where they get lots of hands-on experience with healthy foods. While children are young, it’s so important that we exploit this crucial window of opportunity to reinforce the importance of a healthy diet and help them to learn in a way that is digestible (pardon the pun), and fun. The more they understand about the food they eat, the stronger the foundation for their future lives.”

Over the coming weeks the children will continue their nutritional journey at school and will engage in a number of sessions, including discussing the benefits of allotments as well as designing their own vegetable patches.

Future Thinking and Future Proofing

In an ever-changing world with tech and AI dominating the headlines, Aldwickbury School has incorporated ‘Future Thinking’ lessons into the curriculum to ‘Future Proof’ its pupils, equipping them with a set of skills that will prepare them for senior school and beyond.

Incorporating a blend of traditional subjects and contemporary activities, the school’s innovative Future Thinking Curriculum encompasses a diverse range of experiences tailored to foster the development of essential 21st-century skills. Boys at Aldwickbury School engage in activities that stimulate critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication—fundamental skills that have been identified by leading organisations and educational experts as crucial for future success.

STEM and Tech enthusiasts can delve into the realms of robotics and coding, while creatives explore design software, photography and videography. Outdoor learning experiences across all age groups instil a sense of adventure whilst developing an appreciation for our natural environment.

Recognising the importance of mental health and wellbeing, Aldwickbury has introduced practices such as yoga, mindfulness activities and mental first aid training, empowering pupils to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and resilience.

The curriculum also promotes community engagement, developing meaningful partnerships with local charities and community groups. This year the boys will undertake a number of fundraising initiatives for their chosen charity SANDS.

THE DETAILS

To find out more about Aldwickbury School or to book a place at the next Open Morning on Thursday 2nd May visit aldwickbury.org.uk.

Meanwhile, Year 8 boys have also been collecting and donating supplies to the St Albans and District Foodbank.

Commenting on the curriculum, Paul Symes, Headmaster has said, “The longer school day at Aldwickbury allows us to add extra lessons to the timetable without sacrificing any of the core curriculum subjects. It is crucial that we not only ensure the boys excel academically but that we also prepare them for the future. When boys leave Aldwickbury aged 13 we want them to be ready for the next stage of their academic journey; equipped with the skills required for senior school and life beyond as they enter the world of work.” A testament to the school’s commitment to provide a holistic education whilst achieving academic excellence was underscored last year when the school was selected a one of six finalists for ‘Boys Prep School of the Year’ at the Independent School of the Year Awards.

Top spring trends

From fabulous florals to marvellous metallics, this is how to style the runway looks, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

When we flick through fashion shows, it’s with great excitement and anticipation… moreover, how these costume dramas will be reimagined into wearable, must-have items that we can’t wait to slip into.

And with firm favourites enjoying a bijou update and sexy separates coming into play, here’s what we’re looking forward to wearing when these key looks land in-store…

SHORT SHORTS

The warmer months are all about baring more, and for the spring/summer season, the mini has been pushed aside in favour of the micro short. That’s right, it’s time to get your pins out. From Paris to Milan, models strutted down the catwalk in the shortest of shorts. Nina Ricci perfected the look with fishnet tights, setting the tone for sexy but sophisticated; while Max Mara paired them with silk shirts, oversized canvas jackets and strappy heels. Either way, stylish neutrals, snakeskin prints and clean tailoring signals spring chic.

HIGH WAISTED

Sure to be a big hit, high-waisted trousers are universally flattering, and if you’re after a few more inches, they lengthen the leg. The key is to choose the highest style that’s right for you. As seen at Aadnevik, Rokh, Ralph Lauren and Emporio Armani, wear with a cropped top, tailored jacket – or, as a twist on an old favourite, a bandeau top with bare midriff to show off your waist.

WHITE DRESS

If there’s one thing we love, it’s the wanderlust, dreamy vibe that puts us in a sunny mood when we don a white maxi dress. Designers including Michael Kors, Stella McCartney, Valentino and Susan Fang embraced the allure of broderie anglaise and ruffles for a breezy, fresh take on fashion’s most romantic silhouette. Add a casual edge to your diaphanous dress by wearing it with T-bar flat sandals, or white platform trainers.

CRAFT

Bridging the gap between boho and artisan, the

80 APRIL 2024

craft trend channels crochet, fringes, tassels and embellishment… in a word, craftwork. As seen at Bottega Veneta, with giant pom poms adorning crochet dresses; laser-cut florals at Valentino, and twisted strands and fancified fringing at Asai. By the time the high street embraces these eclectic creations, you can look forward to toned down, tactile pieces with movement – and a good measure of artfully placed decor.

FLORALS

Flower power and plush posies were speaking volumes on the runway with petal prints, petalshaped curves and all matter of flora flourishing in the new collections. Highlights included Burberry, Paul Costelloe and Rodarte. The latter, in their ready-to-wear collection, teamed a silk, floralpatterned, bias-cut slip dress with a floor-length, pink silk cape… stunning. Whether you go dress and cape combo – perfect for glamorous garden parties – or fancy florals with a focus on feeling feminine, it’s a perennial staple.

TRANSPARENT SKIRT

There are lots of ways to make this new addition to your wardrobe work for you. Whereas models at Erdem, Jayne Pierson and Louis Vuitton waltzed down the runway with their undies on show, it’s

possible to tweak this sheer skirt trend with bigger briefs – aka high-waisted hot pants; or footless opaque tights. But if you do dare to bare, think co-ordinating knickers in the same colour, with lace trims, embellishments or showy sequins… designed to be seen.

METALLICS

Be it a slither of silver, or full-on crystals, this is your summer to shine… But just in case you’re having a feeling of déjà vu, silver sirens have been shimmering down the runway for the past couple of seasons. Alexander McQueen, Schiaparelli, Courrèges and Roksanda – to name a few – are still showing the love to lamé and metallics… and so are we. Furthermore, whereas some looks encourage you to play it safe with accessories, more is more with metallics. Which is great news if you fancy a pair of eye-catching silver kitten heels – the shoe for S/S24 – to rock with your silver trousers. Or, a slick silver handbag to team with a dazzling silver dress when you’re going out out. Either way, silver is the standout performer on our wish list.

Royal Ascot Lookbook’

Royal Ascot unveils its first ‘Lookbook’ under new creative director Daniel Fletcher. The fashion designer made history as Royal Ascot’s first ever creative director in its 300+ year history. By Rikki Loftus

Royal Ascot has unveiled its first Lookbook under fashion designer Daniel Fletcher – the British racing institution’s first ever creative director in more than 300 years.

While still highlighting tailoring, British designer Fletcher – who first rose to fame after dressing Harry Styles – has applied his signature, bold aesthetic to the annual Lookbook. It’s set to help racegoers be inventive in how they source their outfits, to create an inspired look that’s authentic

to their personal style.

Ascot is an important fixture in the fashion stakes – with notable attendees of the prestigious event including King Charles and Queen Camilla. Fletcher has produced five consolidated edits that showcase a range of looks appropriate across all enclosure dress codes.

These include a ‘New Guard’ category, which showcases clothing from independent designers and rising stars in the UK, and ‘The Conscious Edit’, which takes a more sustainable approach

“Fletcher has produced five consolidated edits that showcase a range of looks appropriate across all enclosure dress codes”

and includes pieces from Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood.

In 2022, Royal Ascot relaxed their famously strict dress code for the first time due to soaring temperatures, with racegoers being allowed to remove their jackets and ties.

Now, Fletcher is adding an exciting new edge to the event’s style focus.

“This season, I wanted to bring a fresh take on fashion at the races and the magical world of occasion dressing,” said London-based Fletcher, 33.

“Inspiration came from my lifelong fascination with British heritage, and the stylish characters one might find at the racecourse this summer and beyond, whilst also paying homage to the array of styles able to be showcased across each enclosure, as well as my favourite Royal Ascot looks throughout the decades that I discovered during my research delving through the pictorial archives.

“This includes my signature style of building an outfit based on neutrals and my love of tailoring, which I’ve then juxtaposed with more playful maximalist looks that highlight a sense of British sartorial elegance and the glamour of Royal Ascot.

“Be it flamboyant or understated, Royal Ascot gives us the chance to embrace the famous dress codes and dress up, encouraging freedom of

expression through dressing. For 2024, I want to capture that joy and inspire racegoers to push the boundaries with their own unique style, and to embrace their own creativity.”

Originally from the North West of England, Fletcher launched his eponymous menswear label, DANIEL w. FLETCHER in 2015, after graduating from Central Saint Martins and gaining experience with fashion giants including Louis Vuitton, Lanvin and JW Anderson. He soon started getting noticed, especially after Harry Styles began wearing his clothes.

In 2020, he took part in Netflix’s Next In Fashion series, which saw him make it to the final.

Now leading the style helm for Royal Ascot, Alexandra Bertram, brand and creative lead for Ascot Racecourse, said of Fletcher’s first Lookbook edits: “From quintessentially ‘Royal Ascot’ looks that embody our sartorial heritage, through to the playful elegance of vintage dressing and relaxed formalwear, there’s a look that speaks to every style generation across every enclosure.”

Healthcare Why choose to go private?

With a beloved National Healthcare System (NHS) in the UK that has looked after so many of us since birth, Some may ask why choose to go private?

With only around 11% of the population covered by private health insurance many have never visited an independent hospital to experience the benefits.

WHAT IS A PRIVATE HOSPITAL?

Simply put, it is an organisation that provides treatment and healthcare services independently of the NHS. However, many private hospitals support their local NHS Trusts by providing several NHS services.

Exploring the benefits of using a private hospital

The benefits of going to a private hospital can usually be grouped into the three following categories:

Fast access to care

Private Hospitals often offer Private GP services that allow patients to seek face-to-face medical assistance within 48 hrs with options to be treated within 2 weeks. Having the benefit of reduced waiting times reduces the time that their issue has to impact their lives.

Choice

Private healthcare offers patients the benefit of choice. Whether it be choice of hospital, treatment and drugs (many not offered on the NHS due to costs), time and location that is convenient for patients. All help to provide a tailored healthcare service.

Comfort

Private hospitals pride themselves on offering their patients great care alongside a great experience, with an emphasis on comfort and luxury normally seen in the hospitality sector. Private rooms with ensuites, TVs and access to high-speed Wi-Fi, Al-carte dining, fewer restrictions on visiting hours are just some of the benefits seen in a private hospital.

How to get a private hospital appointment

Private medical insurance patients

If you are in the 11% of the population that has access to private healthcare cover you can make a claim against your policy to be seen at your preferred private hospital.

Self-pay patients

Join the growing number of people going direct to private hospitals by getting in touch with your local private hospital to submit an enquiry.

NHS Patients

When referred for treatment use your ‘patient choice’ to select to be seen at a private hospital. NHS GPs are able to refer patients to be seen at private hospitals where they offer NHS services.

All the above patients are welcomed at One Hatfield Hospital. To start your journey book an appointment today by calling 01707 44 33 33 or visit onehatfield.co.uk

HAIR TRENDS THAT WILL DOMINATE IN 2024 from the Nineties bob to the ‘mixie’ cut

Thinking about revamping your look in the New Year? A chic haircut or colour refresh can make all the difference, whether it’s a dramatic transformation or a subtle tweak to your usual style.

If you’re looking for inspiration, a host of stylish celebrities and influencers are ahead of the curve, and hairdressers say the cool cuts and sumptuous shades they’ve been rocking recently will be everywhere next year.

We asked hair industry experts to talk through their predictions for the hottest hair trends of 2024…

THE NINETIES BOB

Last year, Hailey Bieber’s wavy bob inspired many a haircut, and now we’re seeing variations on the short, sharp chop.

“Harking back to the Nineties is the blunt bob that is continuously evolving, now more so into a chin-length style,” says celebrity hair stylist Paul Edmonds. He recommends trying the style with a soft fringe: “It’s all about shorter bangs and keeping the outside edges long. The cut-through fringe with the centre being shorter than the edges provides flexibility.”

GOLDEN BLONDES

“Warm golden tones are replacing the long-standing preference for ashy blondes and cool brunettes, with a shift towards gold and

honey hues,” says celebrity hairdresser Edward James.

Inspired by celebrities like Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Blake Lively, the best way to achieve multi-tonal golden hues is with balayage: “For darker blondes and mid-to-dark brunettes, it creates depth and will reflect more light, making your hair look incredibly glossy.”

THE KITTY CUT

We’ve had the wolf, the octopus and the jellyfish –the next animal-inspired, layered ‘do that will be all over your social media feeds is the kitty cut.

“The kitty cut is longer than a bob with hair falling between the shoulders and collarbone,” explains hair stylist Adem Oygur, founder of Adem salon.

“Cut with subtle ascending layers throughout, it’s face-framing without being too short or choppy.”

The great thing about this mid-length style is that it can be tailored to every hair type and face shape: “Around the face, the layers can begin from the cheekbones or jawline – it is versatile, with many styles such as curled, beachy waves, shaggy or straight.”

GLASS HAIR

“I love that we’re moving into a more glamorous era,” says Charlotte Reid, celebrity hair and makeup artist and Bristows ambassador.

But that doesn’t mean complicated updo’s. On the contrary, she’s noticing a trend towards pokerstraight, ultra glossy locks worn long and loose.

“For premieres and red carpets we’ll be seeing more Nineties, glass-straight hair – that is all I’m being asked to do at the moment,” Reid says.

Case in point? British model Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley swapped her usual glam waves for super-straight tresses at the Fashion Awards 2023 in December.

RED HOT HUES

Countless celebrities jumped on the copper bandwagon in 2023, and now the red trend is hotting up.

“The natural development of this trend is into the brighter and less ‘natural-looking’ red tones,” says hair stylist and trend forecaster Tom Smith.

“Glossy, intense, deep and bright, true reds will bring a fiery nature into 2024 for those wanting to stand out from the crowd. We’ve been seeing

this already on tastemakers such as Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion.”

Robbie Purves, hair stylist and Ffør ambassador, agrees that rich reds will rule next year: “Cowboy copper is the latest trend to hit salon chairs, characterised by its versatile and warm leathery tones. I predict that clients are going to opt for deeper red tones, moving towards plum red and even violet hues.”

Scarlet shades are notorious for fading fast, so if you’re going down the red route, you’ll need to stock up on a pigment-packed product to keep it looking vibrant.

Smith says: “Thankfully, simply using a redtoned conditioner when washing one’s hair is enough to keep the hair healthy and glowing hot red. My go-to is the Evo Fabuloso Colour Boosting Conditioner, £26.50.”

THE ‘MIXIE’ CUT

Pioneered by the likes of Miley Cyrus, Kristen Stewart and British actor Emma Corrin (who rocked the look on the Miu Miu catwalk), the choppy, edgy ‘mixie’ cut is short at the front and longer at the back, and has been gaining traction recently.

“A mix of pixie cut and mullet, this trend is perfect for those who want a daring transformation,” says Tasha, senior stylist at Paul Edmonds.

“The mixie makes a bold statement without sacrificing a touch of femininity, creating a fashion-forward look that exudes confidence and a hint of rebellion.”

DOPAMINE DECOR

Go wild. Release yourself. It’s the time. Dopamine décor has arrived and – as the name suggests – it’s zooming in on using the home to boost the mood. Think of it as one step further from viewing the home as a sanctuary. The home has become a playground.

At its core, dopamine decor is inspired by dopamine, the ‘feel-good’ chemical responsible for pleasure and reward. Integrating its influence into interiors taps into human psychology, and has led to the current boom in interiors created to amplify happiness.

So what does dopamine décor actually look like? There’s adventurous colour, there’s tempting texture, there’s alluring lighting, there’s unusual shape,

“There’s adventurous colour, there’s tempting texture, there’s alluring lighting, there’s unusual shape, but most of all there’s variation”

but most of all there’s variation. What makes us happy is so innately personal, that no two dopamine-dosed rooms will ever look the same. It could be a space full of mismatching furniture, a single powerful statement piece amongst the calm, an unpredicted combination of colours, texture where before there was smooth, moments of design that ignite surprise or a proudly showcased personal collection of objects. It’s design meeting emotion in the most playful and unrestricted way.

LIBERATION FROM LIMITATION

Juxtaposition and contrast are key. ‘Clashing’?

Throw that word out of the window and embrace eclecticism. Sure, not everything that brings you visual bliss coordinates with each other, but so what? The point is it’s beautiful to you, and it’s your home after all – forget about how the rule book says it should look and hone in on how you feel, not how you think you’re meant to feel. Get that dopamine going, decorate with abandon and design a space that’s all the more unique, vibrant and authentic for it.

Identify items that evoke a burst of positivity when you see them. Treat these as the centre of your space, and build up around them, working them into an existing set up – there’s no need to completely redecorate, using a single or few pieces of furniture, lighting, rugs or accessories can be

HOME & PROPERTY

just as cheerful and effective as creating a whole new look.

YOU DO YOU

The essence of the dopamine decor trend lies in selecting furniture and accents that genuinely bring you joy and reflect you as a person, so each object or aesthetic is imbued with meaning as well as beauty. Spaces should deeply resonate with you, prompting a surge of pleasure, contentment or sheer delight and moving past the way they look on a surface level to forge a connection with the sentiments. Rooms set ups can take inspiration from childhood, objects, art, a treasured collection, fashion, travel or a memory – dig deep into yourself.

LEVEL UP THE JOY FACTOR

Nothing is off the table – your personality is centre stage, and the furniture and objects you surround yourself with should bring a smile at every turn. Perhaps they evoke a joy-filled memory, or perhaps they stir up an emotion, or perhaps their sheer beauty gets your heart beating. Dopamine decorating is not about being subtle – now’s the moment to be daring and introduce any objects, colours or themes that ignite passion and awaken the senses. Don’t hesitate – put it on display in its full glory and cheerful splendour.

BRING ON THE BRILLIANCE

For many of us, colour plays a dominant role in decorating for that hit of happiness. From a rainbow explosion in one space to a gentle smattering of calmer shades, either one colour or a combination of many tends to strike a chord with us on a deep level (that sometimes we

“Nothing is off the table – your personality is centre stage, and the furniture and objects you surround yourself with should bring a smile at every turn”

can’t even explain). As dopamine décor gathers momentum, bright, cheering hues are on the up, with kaleidoscopic spaces filled with vivid, often contrasting colours filling homes with optimism and good vibes. An easy way to get involved? Choose objects individually rather than trying to make sure they all ‘work’ together – don’t worry about that – and organically layer shapes, forms, colours, patterns, or materials to grab attention and lift the spirits, or simply go a bit bolder with the colours you’re naturally drawn to.

BEYOND BRIGHTS

While dopamine’d homes are the antithesis of quiet neutrality, that’s not to say calming, colourless spaces can’t get involved, and if you’re not an every-colour-all-in-one-space type of person, that’s great too. It’s about what brings personal satisfaction. A dash of pigment, texture or interesting material here and there can be just as effective as a space drenched in colours if it rouses your senses. While vibrant, elaborate, high contrast designs often define this style, a minimalist approach can also classify as dopamine decor if it creates a glow of wellbeing and a jolt of joy. chaplins.co.uk

UNLEASH YOUR FULL POTENTIAL WITH ORIGIN

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on health and wellness, with individuals seeking to incorporate more physical activity into their daily routines. While gyms and outdoor activities offer various options, one activity stands out for its holistic benefits: swimming. Swimming is often touted as one of the best forms of exercise, and for good reason. It’s a low-impact activity that works the entire body, engaging muscles from head to toe without putting stress on joints. Whether you’re doing laps or engaging in water aerobics, the resistance of the water provides a challenging workout that improves strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health. But the benefits of swimming extend far beyond physical fitness. The buoyancy of water makes it an ideal activity for anyone with chronic pain or mobility issues.

100 APRIL 2024 HOME & PROPERTY

It also promotes relaxation and stress relief, with the rhythmic motion of swimming and water moving over the body inducing a meditative state that calms the mind and reduces anxiety.

Some of the key advantages of having an indoor swimming pool linked to your home or in your garden are accessibility and privacy. Unlike public pools, which may have limited hours or require time and travel to get there, a home indoor pool is available whenever you desire.

Additionally, indoor pools offer convenience which encourages consistency in your exercise routine, allowing you to reap the long-term physical and mental health benefits of regular swimming. With an Origin pool, you can tailor the environment to suit your preferences, working with our experts to design the temperature, lighting and ambience you want, creating a social hub for friends and family or a serene oasis that promotes relaxation and wellbeing. Whether you prefer a tranquil morning swim to start your day or a refreshing dip after a stressful day at work, an indoor pool provides a sanctuary where you can escape the pressures of daily life and focus on your health.

For those considering adding an indoor pool to their home, the benefits extend beyond health. Not only can it enhance the value and appeal of your property, but it also provides a long-term investment in your health and wellness. Indoor pools can be seamlessly integrated into existing homes, whether as a standalone structure or an extension that complements your architectural style. Opting for a pool house extension means your indoor pool becomes an integral part of your home, effortlessly weaving swimming and relaxation into your daily routine. On the other hand, a stand-alone pool house can serve as a personal haven nestled in your garden which provides a tranquil escape, undisturbed by the usual hustle and bustle of your home.

Whether you envision a modern, minimalist structure or a more classic and elegant design, your pool house can be tailored to elevate and harmonise with your home and garden’s aesthetic. The health and wellness benefits of swimming are undeniable, and having an indoor pool at home offers a convenient and effective way to incorporate this fantastic activity into your daily lifestyle. From improved physical fitness to enhanced mental well-being, swimming provides a holistic approach to health that can be enjoyed by individuals of all ages and abilities. Sophie Allport unveils exclusive paint collection with COAT Paints

“A celebration of colour inspired by nature”

Homewares and lifestyle brand, Sophie Allport, is proud to announce the launch of its first capsule collection of paint colours made by bCorp certified, COAT Paints.

Due to launch on 12th February 2024, the carefully curated compilation of 12 shades has been custom-made specifically for Sophie Allport. Each colour can be found in Sophie’s natureinspired watercolour designs and features classic neutrals, delicate pastels, and bold navy, red, and khaki accents.

Sophie Allport, Founder and Creative Director said: “As with our iconic designs, we wanted to produce a paint collection that would draw on the natural beauty of the great outdoors and help to bring the outside in. The result is a palette that is a celebration of colour, inspired by nature. These shades will work in any home and are timeless in their longevity.”

Known for using the highest grade of ingredients to produce heavily pigmented shades, which offer excellent coverage and depth of colour, COAT Paints was an obvious partner for Sophie Allport.

“Not only is the quality exceptional, but we also felt there was a real synergy between us. Honesty,

“Not only is the quality exceptional, but we also felt there was a real synergy between us”

simplicity, and doing our best for the environment are all central to both our core beliefs.” adds Sophie.

The entire Sophie Allport range is:

• Solvent-free and almost odourless, thanks to the low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content

• Water based

• Certified Child and Pet Safe (EN71-3)

• Vegan

• Each tin of paint is made to order and produced in the UK

As with COAT’s own range, the Sophie Allport collection also has 100% accurate peel-and-stick swatches, which means less waste, less mess, and the flexibility to try out colours on different walls.

TRUST BROADVIEW TO CREATE THE WOW FACTOR IN YOUR HOME

A“Whether that’s simply relaxing or entertaining friends and family, our gardens are a focal point, particularly in the Spring and Summer months. What better way to make the most of your time outdoors, than by creating an outdoor living environment with Broadview thanks to their louvred roof pergola systems and garden awnings”

s we look ahead to the warmer months, we’ll soon be turning our attention to our gardens and the prospect of spending more time outdoors. Whether that’s simply relaxing or entertaining friends and family, our gardens are a focal point, particularly in the Spring and Summer months. What better way to make the most of your time outdoors, than by creating an outdoor living environment with Broadview thanks to their louvred roof pergola systems and garden awnings. With one of the largest ranges of outdoor living systems in the South and manufactured by the Belgium based industry leading brand Brustor, every system from Broadview can be custom designed to fit your property. Outdoor pergolas with rotating and retracting roofs operated by remote or app control, along with weatherproof side screens and heaters can effectively create an extra indoor room, outdoors!

Alongside of this, it’s not just the structure alone that Broadview can provide. Their specialist design-team work alongside a wide range of suppliers across the South who offer outdoor kitchens, hot tubs, fire pits and garden landscaping– all of which can help to create a stunning outdoor living environment that can be used all year round. No more leaving guests outside to entertain themselves while you nip back into the kitchen to prepare the next course or organise the next round of drinks, with an outdoor kitchen positioned within your new outdoor structure, you really can make the most

of entertaining this year. What’s more, thanks to either sliding glass walls or integrated screens, the structure can be completely enclosed and with the great addition of heating and lighting, it can be used in all twelve months of the year. As the temperature drops, simply slide the glass shut and you can create a cosy and sheltered area within your garden, protected from the elements. Or, in warmer weather, all you need to do to make the most of the sunshine is open the roof and side screens for the perfect al-fresco space.

As well as their range of pergolas, Broadview also offer fully cassetted retractable awnings that can be installed to your property for added shade. Broadview has an extensive range of awning models to choose from, each with their own features and all can be operated by either Somfy remote control or a manual crank handle. Made with a beautifully crafted aluminium frame of superior quality and a weather-resistant fabric cover, the awnings provide stylish shading for your sunny patio. Available in any RAL colour and with the addition of LEDs and heating, Broadview has the perfect solution for you.

Now is the perfect time to give your outdoor space a makeover. Broadview Shading Solutions, a family run business based in Dorset, are celebrating 55 years in business this year. SPOTLIGHT ON: Penthouse Apartment Project by Rebecca Clark Interiors

‘Urban living with an elegant touch’

Delve inside the behind the scenes of how we transformed the dated interiors of this lofty apartment using warm colours, reflective surfaces and eye-catching details to create a luxurious oasis

Once upon a time this 3rd floor loft apartment was the archetypal bachelor pad, complete with stereotypical leather panelled walls with televisions in-set, straight out of the 1990’s. Fast forward to 2024 when my client was looking to downsize, with its lofty ceilings and wrap around views across Berkhamsted’s roof tops and countryside it was easy to see how she fell in love with the beauty of the bones of this gorgeous pied-à-terre.

Downsizing is almost always challenging, and downsizing to an open plan living, kitchen & dining space gave us a great challenge to get creative with, presenting a unique set of living requirements from one room that all need to flow seamlessly.

Maximising the floor space in this multi functional space was paramount. Removing an unnecessary step right across the bifold window, having a bespoke curved glass balustrade made and getting rid of various small radiators and replacing with bespoke tall, slim statement pieces opened up the floor space entirely.

Our brief was to create a home that’s focused around entertaining, and to create the perfect dinner party space. The kitchen was small and dated, and we took the decision to replace it with something that not only fits in with the rest of the décor in this open plan space, but increasing the kitchen area by bringing cabinets over into the central area of the open plan room made it feel much more connected for a truly convivial

entertaining space too.

The penthouse is flooded with natural light all day which gave us an opportunity to add depth by using a rich, warm palette. We used a soft base of taupe, punctuated with bronze and gold accents throughout the various zones. 11 different but harmonising fabrics in total were used to keep the eye from getting bored in this open plan space. The curtains, bespoke dining chairs, sofas, armchair and oversized footstool are all designed to work together so that when hosting large numbers of people the various zones all come together to create one beautiful room.

With entertaining at the heart of this space, we designed it to really come alive at night with a triple sided glass fireplace and an abundance of reflective crystal for a really glamorous and decadent finish.

If you are considering your own project, we offer a free of charge full Interior Design service and will help you to find the perfect furniture, curtains & blinds, flooring, kitchens, lighting & dressings. Simply pay a redeemable deposit of £350 which comes off of your first purchase over £1000, and let us help you to create the home you have always wished for.

DISCOVER THE MONOCHROME TREND

Out with the old in with the new - say goodbye to plain whites and hello to chic monochrome décor.

Find out how to nail this look with the help of our resident Interior Style Advisor Rebecca Snowden.

Monochrome décor is having a moment with over 20 million views on TikTok. It’s all about easy but luxe styling with simple neutrals and minimalist touches. Say goodbye to plain white and instead go for warmer off-white tones like cream, beige or taupe.

Monochrome’s popularity is also linked to the #softminimalism trend which is now at 24 million on TikTok views and counting. “Think of it as a sister trend as it takes the same light, calming colours of monochrome and adds comforting curved lines and natural materials,” Rebecca says. “After the year we’ve had it’s no surprise that we just want to relax and reset at home. This trend is about prioritising yourself - what’s soothing and inviting to you and to promote your own sense of wellbeing.”

“If you’re stuck choosing between both trends -

don’t worry, why not bring them together? Mixing both monochrome and soft minimalism allows us to craft spaces that not only look great but feel even better. Those off-white tones will warm up the room and textures like cotton, velvet and boucle are perfect for this look. Set the mood with soft lighting and bring in raw finishes and curves such as a clay vase or stoneware. Bringing monochrome and soft minimalism together is like a cosy hygge cocktail - served chilled with close friends and family.” furniturechoice.co.uk

Following the recent show apartment launch, over 150 visitors were recorded across the weekend, with multiple reservations made and all available ground floor apartments with large terraces within Gott Place sold. One eager buyer secured the show home as seen (complete with all fixtures and fittings).

In addition to the Gott apartment launch, Comer Homes has revealed the availability of 10 homes within the Pankhurst Houses collection, which are available to be reserved immediately but are set to be fully launched in the summer upon the opening of the purpose build show house. Prices for the three/four -bedroom semi-detached and terraced houses start from £1.275 million, with the generous 2,045 sq. ft. homes benefitting from spacious interiors, private driveways and expansive front and rear gardens.

A Perfect Pink Palette from Clarissa Hulse

As we start to see a gradual move away from bold, saturated pinks that were so dominant last year, more subtle, powdery hues are still as popular as ever in our design choices. Playful yet still sophisticated, Clarissa Hulse’s ‘Dusky Skies’ palette will help bring a touch of botanical softness to any home.

‘I really believe you can’t go wrong using subtle dusky pinks in your scheme as it is a neutral that looks beautiful teamed with most colours. Mix with mustard for a Scandi vibe, olive for a contemporary look or natural warm tones. I have included a few softer palettes in my new mural range with Graham & Brown, and when decorating my own house took the plunge using the Serendipity Stone mural on all 4 walls of our bedroom. Even though the design is a bold show stopper, the softer hues make it really calm and easy to live with, ‘- Clarissa Hulse

Clarissa Hulse designs beautiful and luxurious homewares from her studio in North London, with an emphasis on botanical imagery and bold colour. Her designs are based on her passion for nature photography, which are just as likely to originate from walks in her local park, as the unspoilt countryside of Wiltshire, or even far
