atfield Park and Gardens open for the season on Saturday 1st April, and there really is something to enjoy for all the family. You can enjoy a peaceful stroll around the beautiful sundial, West Parterre and Old Palace Gardens, which have been carefully curated and nurtured over the ages. Visit the adjacent Woodland Gardens and find yourself surrounded by the beautiful mature beach and oak trees, and magnificent rhododendrons.

Lavender has been grown in and around Hitchin for hundreds of years and museum is homage to this. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times.

2023 is a very special year at Carpenter’s Garden Centre.

Established in 1923, Carpenter’s now celebrates its 100th year of trading. We believe that makes us one of the oldest Garden Centres & Farm Shops in Hertfordshire! Carpenter’s was established by Fred Carpenter Snr in 1923. Initially Fred grew fruit & vegetables to sell at the local markets.

HARTS FEST The annual Hertford Arts Festival, “HArts Fest” will showcase and promote local art and cultural events, activities and exhibitions within Hertford and the local area. During the week, Hertford Town Council will also be working in partnership with local businesses and groups to run FREE daily art or cultural workshops in the grounds of Hertford Castle. Plus there will be a ‘Children’s Art Trail’, hosted in partnership with local primary schools and Manic Ceramics in the Castle grounds.

A Taste of History BUN-dles of foodie fun in St Albans this Easter

t Albans has a fascinating history with food and drink with rich heritages including it being home to England’s oldest pub and the precursor to the Hot Cross Bun. It is said that the Alban Bun originated in St Albans where Brother Thomas Roclliffe, a 14th Century Monk at St Albans Abbey, created the original recipe. From 1361, Brother Thomas would bake these buns to feed the poor on Good Friday.

You can taste the bun for yourself at St Albans Cathedral from Ash Wednesday. Handmade in the Cathedral’s very own Abbot’s Kitchen the bun is baked to a traditional recipe, which remains a closely guarded secret, and whilst the Alban and the Hot Cross Bun are similar in taste, they differ in appearance with the Alban Bun having a distinctive cross cut into the unbaked dough with a knife rather than the piped cross of the modern day bun.

Pop in and enjoy one (or two)! The Abbot’s Kitchen is open daily 10-4pm.

edford Park Concerts is back this Summer with 6 spectacular shows, over two weekends with concerts to appeal to all musical tastes! The first concert kicks off on Friday 23rd June with Soul pop icons The Jacksons, ultimate disco divas Sister Sledge and British soul pioneers The Real Thing who are all ready for the ultimate party night in Bedford Park.

Sting is bringing his ‘My Songs’ World Tour to Bedford Park on Saturday 24th June. Sting’s ‘My Songs’ concerts are an exuberant and dynamic show featuring his most beloved songs, written throughout the 17-time Grammy Award winner’s illustrious career both with The Police and as a solo artist.

On Saturday 25th June West End Proms - A breath-taking evening of live music from the past seven decades of popular musical theatre, delivered by some of the biggest West End Stars of the moment. These include Danny Mac (Pretty

Hertfordshire zoo opens two UK-first designed new habitats!

I

n March 2023, the Hertfordshire zoo Paradise Wildlife Park announced the highly anticipated news that their new animal habitats Sun Bear Heights and Jaguar Jungle finally opened on 1st of April 2023!

These builds had been delayed due to COVID-19 and Brexit, with a spokesperson for the zoo stating: ‘the public has been incredibly understanding of our delays and whilst these pushbacks were out of our control, we have embraced the additional time to create UK-first designed habitats.’ The grand opening of the habitats saw the Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Robert Voss cutting the ribbon alongside Sally Burton DL the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire as well as other members of the Hertfordshire community. Paradise Wildlife Park welcomed stars such as Tottenham Hotspurs player Lucas Moura, Love Island star Marcel Somerville and The Pool Guy Miles Lafin, to celebrate the grand opening on 1st of April.

The two new state-of-the-art habitats introduce Vulnerable (IUCN Red List) species of sun bears, binturongs and Asian small-clawed otters to the park in a mixed species habitat. They have also welcomed back their resident jaguars Kumal and Kedera who have been on holiday at their sister site The Big Cat Sanctuary since pre-covid works began on their habitat.

These habitats immerse visitors in the culture of the Pantanal of Brazil and the jungles of Southeast Asia, whilst teaching them about the need for conservation and protection of the species. All species will act as ambassadors for their wild counterparts and with hope, in the near future,

Like many in the country, these builds have seen delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit and these particular habitats have been large builds for a small family-run zoo. HITCHIN LAVENDER

L

avender has been grown in and around Hitchin for hundreds of years and museum is homage to this. Perks and Llewellyn was an apothecary located in Hitchin town centre until the 1960’s, Hitchin Historical Society have kindly loaned us much of the shops furniture and its artefacts which help give visitors an insight into the use of lavender throughout Victorian times.

We have over 30 acres of lavender containing a wide range of varieties for you to explore. You’ll be able to wander wherever you like within the field and pick some lavender to take home with you. We’ll provide a paper bag for collecting lavender which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed!

We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.

PLANTING & GROWING Our top tips for growing lavender at home: Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a

porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through.

Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in.

Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long.

Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive.

When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established.

There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting

your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up.

When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood.

This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.

WHICH VARIETY TO PICK? There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from.

We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field.

Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for domestic use.

Intermedia is a hybrid plant which comes from a combination of Angustifolia and Latifolia lavenders. Many varieties of Intermedia are used for producing commercial oil and dried bunches, as the yields from these plants are up to three times greater than Angustifolia. Intermedia is also very hardy with a flowering period from early July through to September.

If you’d like to pick a variety of lavender that can be found in our fields, you’ll find a selection of Angustifolia and Intermedia plants, available in two different pot sizes in our farm shop.

Father’s Day Medieval Jousting On Sunday 18th June the turrets and towers of Knebworth House will provide a spectacular backdrop to the costumed Knights on majestic warhorses galloping at full tilt across the arena in a fantastic display of horsemanship. The crowds are encouraged to cheer and jeer the Knights as they demonstrate their skill.

There are two scheduled jousting displays at 12pm and 2.30pm (dependent on weather). Havea-go Archery will be taking place alongside the Medieval Jousting event. For £2 you will be able to shoot 6 arrows aiming at the target.

PAW Patrol Character Appearance Sunday 25th June Knebworth Park will be welcoming Chase and Marshall from PAW Patrol!

Waxin’ Lyrical at Hatfield House with Classic Ibiza’s Superstar DJs

lassic Ibiza returns to Hatfield House on Saturday 19 August for an evening of Balearic-infused dance music.

With plans now in full swing, we sat down with the shows two DJs, Goldierocks and Jose Luis, to ask them about the Classic Ibiza experience and what to expect from their sets this summer.

Goldierocks has been an integral member of the Classic Ibiza family since the very beginning, bringing the party with her deep house classics and joining the Urban Soul Orchestra on the decks for the Sundowner and Dance Sets. This year’s show includes 15 completely new tracks in an orchestral set of over 30 house classics.

Ever wondered what it’s like to DJ with an orchestra that has worked with the likes of Groove Armada and Robert Miles? Well, we asked her: “Performing in front of thousands of people, backed by this immense wall of sound feels so powerful. It’s like you’re in a rocket-ship! I live and breathe dance music and getting to perform these iconic tracks with such depth and emotion, really is a wild ride.”

Jose Luis is a former Pacha and Ministry of Sound resident DJ. With credentials like that, you’d be forgiven to think he’d be pretty cool about the show. Jose’s reaction when we asked him for his thoughts couldn’t have been more different: “Classic Ibiza is the highlight of my summer!

Seeing so many people, from babies to grandparents, dancing and having a great time to the music I’m playing is an incredibly rewarding

experience.”

So, what can you expect from their DJ sets this summer?

Jose moved to the UK from Venezuela in the ‘90s, so unsurprisingly his DJing style has been heavily influenced by his roots: “The Latin vibe has become one of the biggest sounds of the last year, so I’m going deeper into it, not forgetting a few modern classics and some uncovered gems. My set also includes a live jamming session with members of the Urban Soul Orchestra - it’s gonna be awesome!”

Goldierocks’ Deep House DJ Set acts as an appetizer to the evening’s main event, when she’s joined on stage by the Urban Soul Orchestra for the Dance Set. Here’s what she said about her set: “Bottom shakers and sing your heart out deep house classics! High energy, summer feel good vibes, can’t stop moving beats… a mix of classic and brand new Ibiza anthems.”

A

rt and other creative outlets so often showcase what matters to young people today. Expression through creativity can help students to highlight personal struggles or address topics they are passionate about. At my school, there are also many elements of pride in heritage and of identity that come through via creative works. A year on since Sarah Everard’s life was taken, and a few years since the murder of George Floyd, you can see an obvious knock-on impact of these incidents and other social movements in our schools today.

Perhaps most significantly, pupil voice has got louder.

Schools are also listening much harder to pupils.

The Everyone’s Invited movement tarnished many

school reputations across the country. It revealed some traumatic issues that schools hadn’t known about or identified before. Issues around feeling safe have had sharper focus too and schools have had to think this through carefully. In my school we have thought hard about this and have asked pupils to physically draw onto site maps to indicate where they feel safe and where they feel vulnerable, so that we can adapt our common spaces and our duty system.

As a school we have also ensured that all stakeholders have received diversity and inclusion training and we are looking hard at how we can ensure our staff and governors reflect our community. There is still some way to go of course. With many pupils running with societies that are important to them whether it is the LGBTQ+ group or a faith service of their choice, things have shifted irreversibly for the good in schools.

Listening to our young people is key and schools are continually having to find new ways of leaning into conversations and nurturing pupils to talk more but as ever, keeping up as parents is not easy.

Strong pastoral settings in school are providing parents with help on how to navigate this period to best encourage, but also support their children.

t’s no secret flowers are one of fashion’s most enduring love affairs – and this season is no exception.

“We believe florals never go out of fashion,” says Zoe Donovan, digital and marketing director at LK Bennett. “As a brand, we focus on investment pieces that can be worn time and time again, dressed up and down. And a beautiful floral silk dress ticks many boxes.

“This season, we’ve reimagined incredible vintage archive prints, bringing a unique feel to a number of florals, including an 18th-century meadow scene.”

Another fan, Jo Collins, head of womenswear design at FatFace, says florals aren’t going anywhere.

“After the past few years, we see people looking towards trends that are optimistic and uplifting.

This is especially played out in this season’s palettes and the print explosion we’re seeing.”

MODERN MEADOW

One of fashion’s favourites, can you ever have too many maxi dresses? We think not. Whether it’s a tea dress or empire line, the flowing silhouette is flattering and feminine. Spring’s standouts come in two-tones, with floral detailing focusing on a prominent shade. Think vibrant pink or cornflower blue to build on your enchanted garden, err, wardrobe.

“Lilac has been an emerging trend colour for a few seasons,” says Collins. “It can be tricky on some skin tones, but we’ve treated this very much as a background colour to overlay the season’s pops of apricots and nude pinks.” This ‘on-trend’ colour is ideal for layering up, and would work well for a high summer event, says Collins. Taking maximalist animal print decor to the next level, Nicola Smith of The Smith Interior announces her first, exclusive interior design range, the ‘Roar’ collection.

March 2023: Nicola Smith launches her beautiful first collection featuring wallpapers, fabrics, cushions and lampshades through her interiors brand, The Smith Interior.

Having worked as an accomplished tattooist for over twelve years, during 2021 when lockdowns prevented her from working in the tattoo studio, Nicola successfully completed a diploma in Interior Design. This inspired the renovation of her recently bought home and also launched her into the interiors realm on Instagram (@thesmithinterior) where she has an account that focuses on maximalism. Nicola and her home will also be appearing soon on the upcoming brand new Channel 4 programme, Outrageous Homes, hosted by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

Smith said: “I’ve spent many years drawing for my work as a tattooist, and even longer enjoying putting together room schemes in my own home.

When I had the time during lockdown to complete my interiors diploma I saw another pathway open up and am enjoying exploring that as a new beginning”.

Based in Hampshire, the unique designs are hand drawn and designed. Featuring four gorgeous prints each in four coordinating colourways, the new Roar collection is available on velvet fabric sold by the meter, luxury wallpaper, sumptuous cushions and fabulously fringed lampshades.

Inspired by her love of bright colours and drawing on her many years working as a tattooist, Nicola brings her unique illustrative art to the interiors world.
