THE SHIRE LONDON Experience the only golf course in the UK designed by Seve Ballesteros
W
elcoming all levels of golfers, The Shire London, is one of London’s finest golfing experiences. 2019 is set to be a landmark year for the club, and an exciting one, having made further investment in to its Seve Ballesteros signature design golf course, making groundbreaking changes. Owned by The Bridgedown Group, The Shire London, situated in Barnet, has utilised the invaluable knowledge of the world-renowned golf course architects, Dye Designs, in order to make improvements. With this guidance, the club has undertaken the task of inter-seeding its greens with the finest ‘Bentgrass’ known to the game, and Pure Distinction to all 18 greens, used on some of the world’s most famous and respected golf courses. This has resulted in an even more rewarding challenge for golfers at the start of the new season. Now a feature of the 18-hole Masters and nine-hole Academy courses at The Shire London, this uniquely bright green grass is dense, and grows upright and aggressively. It also has exceptionally strong resistance to disease, extreme temperature changes and general wear, making it easy to maintain, as well as providing a truer roll than species more typically used in the UK. This initiative makes The Shire London one of the very first golf courses in the UK to introduce Pure Distinction bentgrass and places it within an exclusive class globally.
12 APRIL 2019
“We are hugely excited at the start of this golf season about introducing our golf course improvements to our members and guests at The Shire London,” commented Ceri Menai-Davis, Director of The Bridgedown Group. “The golf course remains true to Seve’s design, but, with the assistance of the Dye family, we are able to ensure our quality of conditioning shines through all year round.” Further to this, Dye Designs has also designed a new short game and putting area at The Shire London, offering its members and guests first-class practice facilities, whilst helping green staff with green keeping practices to ensure only the best techniques are used on the course. This programme of enhancements is the latest example of Bridgedown’s growing relationship with the globally-renowned golf course architecture specialists, who are also the primary consultants on two highly-anticipated venues being developed in the capital, West London Links and The Dye London. Are you ready to take on Seve’s challenge? Experience these first-class improvements at The Shire London for yourself. Whether you fancy hosting any type of golf day or simply booking a round, the club look forward to welcoming you and your fellow golfers.

THE BOAT RACE 2019 PREVIEW W Sunday 7th April 2019, 2.15pm & 3.15pm
atched by thousands along the banks of the River Thames and by millions more on TV around the world, The Boat Race is the world’s most famous rowing race, and one of the biggest free sporting events in London. The annual contest between two rowing crews from Oxford and Cambridge universities, is one of the oldest sporting rivalries, following a challenge between old school friends. The first ever Men’s Boat Race took place in 1829 in Henley on Thames. Since the second race in 1836 the contest has taken place in London. The first ever Women’s Boat Race took place in 1927 and moved to the Championship Course in 2015. April 2019 will see the running of the 165th Men’s Boat Race and 74th Women’s Boat Race. Both Cambridge crews wear light blue, whilst Oxford crews wear dark blue. The Boat Race course is 4 miles, 374 yards or 6.8 km long and starts downstream at Putney Bridge and passes under Hammersmith Bridge and Barnes Bridge before finishing just before Chiswick Bridge. The crews who win the coin toss before the Race

choose which side (or station) they will race on. The stations are known as Middlesex and Surrey, with advantages and disadvantages for each side because of the bends in the river. The teams compete in eight-oared rowing boats, each steered by a cox who sits in the stern or back of the boat. The cox is the only crew member who faces in the direction they are moving. On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames to witness the action. Remember, all the riverside pubs will be heaving, with the crowds spilling out onto the towpaths. If you’re planning to watch from a pub, arrive early! There are large screens at Bishops Park, Fulham and Furnival Gardens, Hammersmith where you will be able to watch the whole Race before and after the crews have passed. The parks will also feature food outlets, beer stands and merchandising stalls. The 2019 Boat Race start times: The Women’s Boat Race 2.15pm; The Men’s Boat Race 3.15pm. BBC1 will be broadcasting live, or you can watch the action online. For more information visit www.theboatrace.org

Karts to Cars
From Karts to Cars, how a Hertfordshire schoolboy is taking the racing world by storm. WORDS: HAZEL ENGLANDER

A
ccording to the Oxford dictionary, a phenomenon is ‘Something or someone who is extremely successful, often because of special qualities or abilities.’ Well, schoolboy racing driver Ben Kasperczack is truly the embodiment of that. At just aged three, when other toddlers were honking the horn of their simulated plastic steering wheels, Ben was hurtling around Rye House, the same kart track where Lewis Hamilton was spotted. And by the grand old age of just four, he made history when eager-eyed Motorsport World snapped him up, making him the youngest ever driver in the World to be signed by a sponsor. I can only imagine what his signature looked like on the contract and have visions of it being auctioned for vast amounts at charity functions one day. I interview Ben at David Lloyd, where the leggy fifteen-year-old version of his toddler self arrives in a dishevelled school uniform, wonky tie and rucksack, having got a lift off mum. How does it feel to have to be driven here? I ask. After all, Ben averages 110mph on the track but has to wait another two years before he can drive on the roads. ‘Fine.’ He answers with bashful modesty, accepting it as any normal teenager would. I ask him to explain to me the difference between karts and cars. ‘I started racing karts competitively at six.’ He explains nonchalantly, winning races at the British championship where Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and other big names used to compete.’ In fact, the truth is he won 180 trophies in his successful ten-year karting career. But by the age of 13 was already getting itchy feet. As Ben explains “Some people continue with karts all their lives, but the serious professionals move on to cars.’ At 14 Ben did a year of testing before competing, aged just 15 at the prestigious Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire. He won both races in the opening round. As if
Hazel Englander
34 APRIL 2019
winning both the first races of his first full season wasn’t enough he was also awarded the fastest lap of the entire race too. Oulton Park was another triumph for Ben where despite it being his first time ever at the circuit - you guessed it! He came first. I am struck by Ben’s impeccable manners and his modesty as he talks me through his successes to date. Respectable names of circuits conquered sound like a tick list of any World champion past or present. Having already raced at Silverstone; Oulton Park; Brands Hatch and Donnington Park, he has won almost everything apart from when he went into a dramatic roll, due to car error at Donnington Park.
“At just aged three, Ben was hurtling around Rye House, the same kart track where Lewis Hamilton was spotted” I would not like to be his mother watching that one, as Ben shows me horrendous footage of his car rolling and spinning over six times, at terrifying speed, before finally coming to rest smoking and upside down at the side of the track. Unperturbed, Ben seems more worried about the fact I am mentioning it, rather than any life-threatening situation he might have been in, or could face in the future. More angry than disappointed, he informs me it was proven to be a car, not human error that caused him to crash. Significantly to me, however, is how calm he is watching this back, not bothered at all about the danger, simply annoyed that this ‘Caused me not to be in the position to win the championship.’ Notably, this attitude exemplifies he possesses those other most necessary attributes: nerves of steel, fearlessness, determination and commitment that work as the force to consolidate his talent. I ask him if there are any other qualities needed for success. ‘Cars don’t have power steering, so you need to be strong.’ He informs me finishing off his crisps. Another example of Ben’s commitment is the way he ‘drives’ the whole brand too. From his initial
choice of colours to his own use of them, Ben is behind the design of his kit and his beloved fully race prepared Citroen Saxo VTR. Being physically hands-on wrapping the car himself, Ben using his own design to further endorse his growing brand and identity. In fact he has built up an impressive following of 16k on Instagram and manages all his social media himself too. I ask him about the inevitable comparisons between himself and our other Hertfordshire success story Lewis Hamilton, but apart from telling me Lewis’s dad is really nice and pops into the family home for a cup of tea occasionally, that seems to be where the similarity or association with him ends. I push him and ask who his role models are? Ben looks at me as if trying to find a polite way to put it when he explains ‘ I don’t want to be the next Lewis Hamilton or anyone else for that matter. I just want to be me, Ben Kasperczak.’ Fair enough, he is clearly very happy in his own skin in a totally non-arrogant quietly confident way. ‘So what is your dream then as yourself- Ben Kasperscak?’ I ask. ‘Goal.’ He smiles apologetically. ‘ My goal is to become the youngest ever British Touring Car Driver, but if you really do want to know my dream, Formula One is the elite of motorsport and that is my dream to be an F1 driver’. Somehow I don’t think he will be dreaming for too long. Since my interview, Ben has been invited to race in the prestigious Ginetta Junior Championship, part of the main British Touring Cars Championship which is televised live each race weekend on ITV4. Anyone wishing to see Ben in action can join the 20 million strong audience by tuning in on Sunday, April 28th.Or sample the atmosphere live at Donnington which, with a trackside attendance of 385 thousand, is bound to thrill. The art of persuasion: Wartime posters by Abram Games T 6 April – 24 November, National Army Museum, Chelsea
“Games’s work offers a fascinating picture of a nation at war”
38 APRIL 2019
his major exhibition explores the life and legacy of the iconic designer Abram Games, focusing on his time as ‘Official War Poster Artist’ during the Second World War. Always direct, and occasionally controversial, Games’s wartime posters have left a legacy that continues to influence the art of persuasion employed by visual designers today. During his employment as a poster artist for the Public Relations Department at the War Office from 1941 until 1945, Abram Games designed over 100 posters as tools to recruit, educate and influence soldiers and civilians alike. ‘The art of persuasion’ presents these posters and explores how Games was inspired by his Jewish heritage, his experiences as a soldier, and the turbulent politics of the time. In helping to transform new conscripts into trained soldiers, encouraging support for the war effort and presenting an idealistic vision of postwar Britain, Games’s work offers a fascinating picture of a nation at war. This exhibition examines the techniques Games used to communicate his messages effectively. Guided by his mantra ‘maximum meaning, minimum means’, Games was the master of reductive design. From stark imagery
and visual puns to innovative use of the airbrush, his unique artistic approach changed the face of British graphic design. This year, and in conjunction with the exhibition opening at the National Army Museum, English Heritage will commemorate Games with a blue plaque. The exhibition will include posters from the Museum’s collection alongside loans from the Estate of Abram Games. See Games’s airbrush, his school report and the sealed pattern of his cap badge design for the Royal Armoured Corps. Visitors can also listen to interviews discussing the legacy of the artist and test their artistic skill by designing their own poster. A public programme will run throughout the exhibition with study evenings, tours, creative workshops, an academic conference and a Blitzthemed evening of jive. Aston Martin recreates iconic James Bond Goldfinger DB5
T
he iconic Aston Martin DB5 is back, thanks to a unique collaboration between Aston Martin and EON Productions, the company that produces the James Bond
films. Following the successful DB4 G.T. continuation project, a series of 25 Goldfinger DB5 continuation editions* have been recreated for customers by Aston Martin Works and EON Productions. The Goldfinger DB5 continuation is based on James Bond’s legendary car from 1964 and built by Aston Martin Works at Newport Pagnell – the original home of the DB5. They are authentic reproductions of the DB5 seen on screen, with some sympathetic modifications to ensure the highest levels of build quality and reliability. This authenticity extends to include functioning gadgets such as revolving number plates and more, which were made famous in Goldfinger. The gadgets are co-developed with Oscar®-winner Chris Corbould, special effects supervisor from the James Bond films. Officially sanctioned by Aston Martin and EON Productions, all the Goldfinger edition cars are produced to one specification - Silver Birch paint - just like the original. The most instantly recognisable car of all-time, the DB5 made its first appearance in the third James Bond movie, Goldfinger, alongside Sean Connery as James Bond. Laden with gadgets and armaments installed by Q Branch, the secret agent’s Aston Martin became an instant hit with moviegoers. Since its seminal appearance in Goldfinger the DB5 has featured in a further six James Bond movies: Thunderball (1965), again with Connery; GoldenEye (1995) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

James Bond and his DB5 have become two icons of popular culture and one of the most successful and enduring movie partnerships of all-time. Such was its popularity, the DB5’s movie debut even spawned a Corgi die-cast model, an astonishing 2.5m of which were sold in its first year of production (1965). No wonder an entire generation of children grew-up aspiring to own an Aston Martin. Now, thanks to the remarkable Goldfinger

To own an Aston Martin has long been an aspiration for James Bond fans, but to own a Silver Birch DB5, complete with gadgets and built to the highest standards in the very same factory as the original James Bond cars? Well, that is surely the ultimate collectors’ fantasy. The skilled craftspeople at Aston Martin Works and the expert special effects team from the James Bond films are about to make this fantasy real for 25 very lucky customers.” Each Goldfinger DB5 continuation car is priced at £2.75m plus taxes. Here are some of the reasons why parents are choosing to give their children the unique experience of private school and why it’s worth the financial investment.

Controlled class sizes A comprehensive study on class size made by educational researchers Bruce Biddler and David Berliner in 2002 showed that the smaller the class size, the better the average student performs on academic achievement tests. The gains from smaller class sizes are stronger the longer a child is exposed to them. Private schools vary greatly in size, but depending on

Instructors are both qualified and passionate about their subjects, often holding advanced degrees in their field. Within the tight-knit school community, students have close relationships with their teachers who commonly act as role models. In addition, small class sizes make staff members more readily available for extra help or to further challenge individual students.
Extracurricular activities
Parental involvement Private schools are built around open communication between parents and administration, and they make it a priority to involve parents in the community. From frequent parent-teacher meetings, social events such as parent breakfasts and family camping weekends, and the participation of parent committees in fundraising initiatives, families become an integral part of the child’s education. This common ground also helps strengthen parent-child relationships.
While academics remain the priority for most private schools, many also place a strong focus on a wellrounded education and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, arts or clubs. This involvement helps stimulate students in their studies, as noted in a study at Stanford University that found that students involved in the arts are more motivated to learn and are three times more likely to win a school attendance award. Extracurricular activities can provide a much-needed break from the stresses of academics while developing skills and engaging in valuable social situations.
A safe environment Private schools have reputations for maintaining high standards for discipline and respect. Lower staff-tostudent ratios allow for more effective observation and control of school grounds. The strong sense of community found in private schools also discourages dangerous behaviour. In the Fraser Institute study, around 72 per cent of parents surveyed with children in the private school system strongly agreed that their school was safe, which greatly improves the quality of the child’s educational experience and achievement. The discipline they learn also improves their rates for success in post-secondary education when they are in control of their class attendance and achievement.
Ample resources
“At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond”
Development for today’s and tomorrow’s world Private schools go beyond offering the mandatory subjects required by provincial curriculum; they can offer students a wide range of specializations including arts programs, athletics, maths and science. Private schools are responsible for producing many leaders in politics, business and society, with a history of adapting quickly to changes in technology and culture. And today, they are also sought by parents of children with special needs such as behaviour problems or learning disabilities.
At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond. Quality resources provide students with the opportunity to fully explore their interests and talents.

Taking Care of Pupils’ Emotional Well-being
L
ockers Park is a day and boarding school nestled in 23 acres of Hertfordshire woodland on the outskirts of Hemel Hempstead, with St Albans, Harpenden and Berkhamsted close by. The school offers a first class education to boys aged 7 to 13 while the Pre-Prep supports boys and girls aged 4 to 7.
Balanced mindset The school works to support pupils’ emotional growth just as much as their academic prowess. It knows that allowing boys to be themselves,
comfortable within their school environment, encourages them to gain confidence and flourish academically.
Healthy habits The curriculum at Lockers Park includes structured sport every day, which the school believes leads to increased concentration and academic success, as well as allowing children to let off steam! Pupils are encouraged to learn a musical instrument, to try their hand at acting, or join the Scout troop or chess team. The school believes these opportunities foster healthy habits, teaching children to apply themselves, as well as being an outlet for expression.
Emotional support Recognising the importance of emotionally equipping its pupils for the challenges that lie ahead, the school recently welcomed guest speaker, Mr Dick Moore, a passionate advocate for mental health in children and teens. Headmaster Christopher Wilson observes: “We know that being in good physical health, eating a balanced diet and enjoying regular exercise all help to keep children mentally well, but there is always more than can be done. Learning from others on how to navigate mental health problems and find solutions is a step in the right direction.”.

Does experience come with age? A fter 23 years’ service as Headmaster of Westbrook Hay, I would reckon I have seen most that can happen in a school and have dealt with thousands of parents and their various aspirations. Is there any form line that can be traced? Without doubt the single biggest decision is when is it the right time to make the move. Over the years my sofa has been sobbed on (metaphorically mostly ) by parents who tell me of their underperforming children, who are bored in classes of 30 and have reached the point of not enjoying their schooling. An oft proffered line is that they looked at Prep schools before, but decided to join their local State primary school because it was a) close to where they live b) all their friends were going or c) they didn’t really understand the differences in State and Independent schools, possibly as they had no experience of the latter. When these Year2,3 or 4 children come for the taster day, we want to see what they can do in the context of a normal school day, as we do not have an entrance test, but from this visit it is usually clear that our children of the same age are further on in their skills and knowledge than the visitors from the local Primary schools. This shouldn’t be a surprise, as we have several advantages. Children who have been with us from Nursery
are prepared in the gentlest sense for entry to Reception – a good deal of this involves enjoying the wonders of our 26 acres as they explore their surroundings. Reception offers the opportunity to consolidate the reading and writing that has emerged, an ease with numbers develops and children begin to take an active part in their learning. Building on this through Year 1, where subject specialist teaching begins in some subjects, it really is no surprise that those who have benefitted from all this are further along the path. The easiest way to avoid the feeling as a parent that you have made a mistake and not given your child the very best that is on offer, is to make an appointment and come and see us and what life on the other side of the educational divide looks like. www.westbrookhay.co.uk

Privately Educated People Dominate Top British jobs
The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives. In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.
T
heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated. Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers

“Is it a man or a woman? It’s neither one nor the other – it’s a clown.” The circus is a magical place.” *
T
he imagination of many artists has been stimulated by the fascination for a world that is both wondrous and raw, poetic and indispensable. Christian Dior enjoyed going to the Cirque d’Hiver, which is where, in 1955, Richard Avedon, who intuitively captured the essence of Monsieur Dior’s style in an extraordinary way, took his famous photo, Dovima and the Elephants , an image that perfectly evokes the wonder and majesty of haute couture. In 1950, British television also covered the House’s show at The Savoy in London with a report titled Dior ‘Circus’ Comes To Town The circus theme reappeared later at Dior under John Galliano’s creative direction. For isn’t a fashion show, after all, akin to the parade that inaugurates a circus show? Great 20th century artists such as Pablo Picasso, Erik Satie, Serge Diaghilev and Léonide Massine joined Jean Cocteau – a regular at the Cirque Medrano, which also counted Federico

Fellini among its fans – to develop the ballet Parade in Italy between Rome – the birthplace of Maria Grazia Chiuri – and Naples, before presenting it in Paris in 1917. For Maria Grazia Chiuri, this fantastical creative chaos provided the starting point for the Spring/ Summer 2019 Haute Couture Collection, debuted on 21 January 2019 in Paris in an authentic big top tent. The presentation began with gymnasts carrying one another down the runway on their backs, shoulders and even upside down, setting the stage for the thematic clothing and accessories that would follow. The visual unfurling of the pieces that compose it represents an unleashing of the memory and the imagination associated with the circus through costumes, fashion and art, extending and the evocation of Cindy Sherman’s work focusing on clowns. Models in glitter swim caps and mime-inspired eye makeup paraded looks paying homage to the Big
Top. Harlequin-inspired diamond patterns covered gowns, pleated skirts and sheer blouses; and circus motifs including rings of fire, wild animals, sideshow characters and loose ribbons reminiscent of a classic, striped tent made up the bulk of the collection. The collection consists of a superposition of images: a woman’s tattooed skin, reminiscent of the Victorian circus and its fairground phenomena, becomes a motif-drenched unitard that shapes the body and tells a wearable story under dresses. Powdery shades that come together and blend into an infinite palette – like those on the curtain painted by Pablo Picasso for the ballet Parade – also symbolise this sense of the worn, of the fine dust that sprinkles stage clothes. Skirts embroidered or inlaid with opaque sequins are shortened as tutus that nod to the circus codes of acrobats, tamers and riders. Maria Grazia Chiuri employs this broad variety of images to compose her own “parade”, comprising full and very light pants, narrowing at the ankle, which can also become sumptuous jumpsuits. Shorts are paired with sheer white shirts accented with ruffs or ribbons seemingly frayed with the passage of time. There are also leather corsets, sailor stripes, and black jackets inspired by that of the lion tamer. The geometric white clown outfit, whether spare or sumptuous, is reinterpreted through its materials, embroidery and proportions. The show was animated with performances by
the all-female circus company Mimbre, which, in a constant search for the poetic in the unexpected, highlights the trust and bond between the acrobats’ bodies. The circus is presented as a place of inclusion in which the clown, through its androgynous and asexual dimension, becomes the expression of a possible equality and an evocation of modernity, one where beauty, origin, gender and age are no longer important, and only technique and daring matter. * Quotation from the book: Le Costume de clown blanc: Gérard Vicaire, la passion pour seul habit by Sylvie Nguimfack-Perault. When Emma Sills set out to create Herts Fit Fest, it was to make health and fitness easily accessible to all. Having originally come from a corporate background as a senior manager for 10 years in one of the top 4 accounting companies in the UK, Emma’s passion for fitness lead her next career step to the fitness industry where she joined the management team of a small 24hr gym operator. She grew this company from one to five gyms, whilst also competing in the largest Natural Bodybuilding Federation in the UK, winning the figure category to become top in the UK, earning a professional status and then placing 3rd in the world finals in Miami. It is with this drive and passion to share all things health and fitness to help others that Herts Fit Fest was created. Herts Fit Fest is here to encourage lifestyle changes, to change the way we view physical activity and give people an insight into the many ways you can become a happier and healthier version of yourself. Herts Fit Fest brings, not only all the favourite classes, but also fitness styles to the festival that are different and new to festival goers, as well as support, help and advice for those looking for it. One main aim of the festival is to showcase a variety of ways to get active and get support. Sometimes fitness/classes are inaccessible to the everyday person due to location/cost and/or even confidence. This was a driving force behind bringing everything to one location with fabulous and encouraging instructors, as well as inspirational people to share their knowledge and stories, therefore creating a hub of everything anyone might need to help break down those barriers. The varied timetable and relaxed fitness approach means you will always find a class to suit your mood. You can come along for just the day or the full weekend, you can join the campers or glampers and stay over or you can go home after a fun packed adrenaline fuelled day. body, including thighs, arms, abdomen and under the chin. The process begins with a consultation, where your body contouring specialist , will firstly access your areas of concerns , confirm if you are appropriate for treatment. We then develop a customised treatment plan for you. Treatment involves an applicator being placed on the skin, which cools fat cells to the exact temperature they crystallise and die. These cells are naturally processed and removed by the body, while the skin and surrounding tissue is unaffected, although some patients may experience temporary mild bruising. CoolSculpting® has a well-established safety record, and features Freeze Detect, which monitors skin temperature to prevent freeze burns. The results are significant, with fat layer reductions of up to 27% across multiple treatment areas six months after the procedure . It’s no wonder 82% of former patients would recommend CoolSculpting® to a friend.

Spring clean your mind De-cluttering or simplifying a complex life can optimise the value of that life
T
he late Steve Jobs of Apple fame was a man of many talents and his words resonate with me: “Simple can be harder than complex. You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.” This Jobs quote ties in nicely with the theory of personality being the most complex thing in the world. Once you’ve sorted out how you behave and who you truly are in terms of individual selfawareness and acceptance... where you sit in a place of unique contented balance, life becomes easy... almost simple. A bit like having dozens of browser tabs open at the same time, trying to simultaneously juggle a multitude of thoughts at the same time can be counter-productive, slowing us down to the point where we are unable to process all the information to hand. Rather, if we can set about simplifying our thoughts, allowing ourselves to focus on one thing at a time, we can reap huge benefits.
82 APRIL 2019
Increasing emotional intelligence frees up an individual’s headspace facilitating potential positive movement within a person’s ease of thought, feeling, expression and efficacy. Even if you don’t aspire to move mountains, just being easy within yourself is an exceptional goal worth attaining. I have personally learnt that I do not need to be aware of everything that goes on in the world and I certainly do not need to know all of the answers to all of the questions. Being involved psychologically in things I cannot change is, I think, pretty exhausting. To maximise or to optimise? I would urge people to consider not rushing around perpetually pursuing maximisation, but consider trying to slow down, stand and stare and optimise their genuine authenticity. Allowing psychological space in my head is liberating; it allows me to breath emotionally and gives me time to do be me, to be less busy, and optimise that person I truly am... the person I truly want to be.

Open to all, de Leon Physio has had a huge presence in Mill Hill for over 10 years and has now expanded to be able to house a rehab and pilates gym as well as two bright and airy individual treatment rooms. From the moment you step through the door, you will feel well looked after and in extremely good hands. More recently, Nicki and de Leon Physio, have been providing the physiotherapy care on the set of Cats the movie which has over the last six months, been filmed at Warner Bros Film Studios in Leavesden. An exciting dance-filled film, due for release this Christmas, has kept de Leon Physio extremely busy with it’s impressive cast of A-listers and 30 dancers. cause of the pain, not just the symptoms. “Unless you address the cause of the problem, symptom relief will be very short-lived” says owner and Clinical Director Nicki de Leon. “This is achieved through a thorough assessment of the way you move in order to identify the key areas that need rehabilitating.” According to the team at de Leon Physio, unless there has been a specific identifiable trauma leading to the injury, most musculoskeletal pain can be attributed to a movement dysfunction that needs addressing. Of course, the Physiotherapists still use a whole range of manual therapy techniques such as joint mobilisations and manipulations, myofascial release and massage, as well as acupuncture and dry needling. The clinic welcomes not only sports injuries, but the whole host of musculoskeletal, rheumatological and orthopaedic conditions, as well as pre and post-natal physiotherapy.

Endometriosis: why is it so hard to diagnose?
Mr Stewart Disu Consultant Gynaecologist MBBS, MRCOG, BSCCP(Cert)
Gynaecology Services at BMI The Clementine Churchill Hospital
What is endometriosis?
Diagnosing endometriosis
Endometriosis is a relatively common yet painful condition, affecting around 1.5 million women in the UK. Endometriosis can affect any woman or girl who is menstruating and as a result can have a severe impact on the quality of life of the women who experience it. Endometriosis is a condition which causes womb tissue (endometrium) to show up in other parts of the body - from the ovaries to the bowel. With every period these tissue deposits bleed, causing inflammation and scarring.1 This leads to severe pain and related health problems, including infertility.2 Recent research shows that, on average, there are 7.5 years between women first seeing a doctor about their symptoms and receiving a firm diagnosis.3 But why, and what can be done? Mr Stewart Disu, Consultant Gynaecologist at BMI The Clementine Churchill Hospital, Harrow, explores how endometriosis is diagnosed and getting the treatment you need.
Getting diagnosed with endometriosis can take a long time. Mr Stewart Disu explains how one reason for this is that the symptoms are very similar to the symptoms of other conditions. The only conclusive way to diagnose endometriosis is to have a laparoscopy - the gold standard for diagnosing and treating endometriosis. In this procedure, a surgeon inserts a small camera into the pelvis via a small cut near the navel. The surgeon can then look for signs of endometriosis. If they find it, the endometrium tissue can be treated then and there or a sample might be removed for testing.4 See your GP if you have symptoms of endometriosis, especially if they’re having a big impact on your life.
Symptoms of endometriosis Symptoms of endometriosis can differ for each person. Not all women will get all symptoms, and the severity varies widely between women. However, common symptoms of endometriosis include: • Severe/Heavy periods • Pelvic pain • Painful sex • Pain when going to the toilet • Blood in your poo • Feeling tired all the time3 If you have any or all of these symptoms, you should make an appointment to see your GP, especially if they’re having a big impact on your life. 88 APRIL 2019
Treatments for endometriosis There’s currently no cure for endometriosis, but there are treatments that can help ease the symptoms, including: • Painkillers – such as ibuprofen and paracetamol • Hormone medicines and contraceptives • Laparoscopic surgery to cut away patches of endometriosis tissue • An operation to remove part or all of the organs affected by endometriosis – such as surgery to remove the womb (hysterectomy) If you’re concerned about your symptoms and you think you might be experiencing endometriosis, an appointment with a Consultant Gynaecologist is a good next step.
Our women’s health service offers direct and convenient appointments with consultant gynaecologists. Your consultant may be able to reassure you or can discuss treatment options that could relieve your symptoms so that you can return to enjoying your life to the full. We also have a wide choice of consultants who are specialised in various aspects, including the choice of a male or female consultant if preferred. What is smart/casual dressing? Do you hate the term ‘smart / casual’? Do you know how to wear ‘smart / casual’?
T
here are many dates in our diary, days of the week or events in our life where the term ‘smart / casual’ is applicable. Getting your outfit right for the occasion is something alot of you struggle with as it’s normally top of the list for most of my clients. Whether it be for going to work everyday in an office environment, a Christening, a dinner date or meeting, or you just want to change up your style for everyday, ‘smart / casual’ dressing just got a whole lot easier. For the past couple of seasons trends have been shifting so that more casual attire has become smarter. The new rules are now the old rules, because creativity rules! Street style watchers will know suiting is firmly back on the fashion agenda for Spring, but that doesn’t mean the same old black blazer and fitted pants. Suits have become brighter, checked or pinstripe and matching. That’s not to say that the humble blazer doesn’t play a part, this piece is an important part of your wardrobe and no doubt I will be buying more than one this season to change up every outfit that I wear. A simple dress and opaque tights just won’t cut it anymore, style a spotty midi dress with this season’s must-have jacket the trench, belt at the waist and the soft fabric means it’s no longer smart and structured but more relaxed and understated. It’s no longer about black, white and navy, liven up your work-wear or smarten up your day look with some eye catching colour. Red and pink are current favourites to give your outfit some serious colour clash, but blues and greens can be easier and softer on the eye if you don’t want to stand out from the crowd too much. Lastly take the plunge and grab a jumpsuit and take away the worry about what goes with what. I feel it is my job on this earth to persuade any remaining resisters as to the power of the jumpsuit. Jumpsuits are a versatile all-rounder, whilst being the most youth-endowing item of clothing you can wear as you get older. Want to look both stylish and cool for day or evening then a jumpsuit should be your go-to wardrobe staple. What better way to forget about the cold outside and welcome the in a new season with some new ‘smart / casual’ pieces for your wardrobe. French connection has an amazing bright pink suit you might be bold enough to try. For a great choice in blazers then go to &other stories for lots of oversized, longer line grey, check or navy stripe blazers for a fresh new season take on the silhouette. My favourite trench coat I have come by so far is from Kin by John Lewis in navy or khaki. For a great choice of cropped trousers then head over to Zara, they have them in every fabric, cut, colour you can think of and you will be sure to find one that flatters you. Finally, if you fancy some floral midi dresses, most high street retailers have an offering, but try Topshop for bright coloured printed dresses and vintage inspired florals that are easy to wear with any jacket styled over the top.

Air Plants:
The new favourite houseplant?
These low-maintenance plants don’t even need soil - and are 100% Insta-worthy. Air plant expert Andy Gavin introduces Hannah Stephenson to the trend
F
amiliar with air plants? They are set to become the new houseplant craze - with no soil needed and only the occasional mist. In fact, air plants take even less looking after than the hugely popular cactus, which is still proving a massive hit with home-owners (and Instagrammers). Wondering how this is possible? Air plants, which come from South and Central America and the Southern States, have no roots to plant in soil. And they can create all sorts of looks - from trailing foliage, which drapes from shelves like thick silver curly hair, to more structured specimens, whose leaves change colour to fiery red and produce bright flowers. “There’s a craze with houseplants at the moment, and the thing about air plants is that they don’t take up much space, there’s no mess or soil-borne fungus or gnats. They are structurally interesting and very low-maintenance,” says air plant specialist Andy Gavin, who won a gold medal at every RHS show he attended in 2018 and is due to exhibit for the first time at Chelsea Flower Show this year. “Air plants are highly collectable. There are around 700 species in the wild, hybrids, and so much variety. You can have one species and 10 different forms of it,” adds Gavin, who runs Andy’s Air Plants (andysairplants.co.uk) from his base in Cornwall. Curious to learn more? Allow Gavin to introduce you to the mesmerising world of air plants... Which ones can you buy in the UK? “You can find air plants in garden centres, a few nurseries and a few online sellers in the UK. There
are about 30 species that are easily available, all in the genus Tillandsia,” says Gavin. Tillandsias are in the bromeliad (or pineapple) family. The ones you are likely to come across include Tillandsia ionantha (which means purple flower). “Most tillandsias have a very minimal root system, which is just used to adhere to a surface, whether it’s a cliff base or a tree. In the wild, they grow epiphytically (on other plants or surfaces) on cacti or even telegraph wires,” Gavin adds. “The roots don’t take up any moisture or nutrients. That’s all done through the leaves. That’s the critical thing about how air plants grow.” Do they flower? “Yes - the bromeliad is a flowering plant family. All members of the species flower, and the flowering is hugely varied in tillandsias. You can have white, yellow, red, lots of lilacs and purples,” says Gavin. Sometimes the petals are tubular, which then open up, while others have bi-coloured flowers. A few, around 10-15%, are fragrant. Tillandsia multiflora is one of the many species that changes colour when mature and about to flower. The ionanthas also change colour from green/silver to a fantastic red colour, as though they are blushing. Where should you put them? All air plants need plenty of natural light. There are two main categories - the silver ones, which are dry growing, and the green ones, which are wet growing. Silvery-leaved species require, or will grow better, in higher light levels, so can be put in direct sunlight.

Species that are covered with fine hairs/scales or trichomes, giving them a soft hairy appearance, and species with fine leaves, need good air movement and quick drying. “Some of them grow on cacti in deserts, so don’t require humidity like you’d get in a bathroom. The best situations in the house for the silvery types is a south or very bright east or west facing spot. They are sun lovers, and the more sun you give, them the better.” Tillandsia types which are green or darker in colour, often with wider, shorter leaves and less or no visible hairs or scales require lower light levels, and will grow happily with less air movement in a more humid environment. These would be happy in a bathroom with plenty of light. Can you put them outside in summer? “Yes,” says Gavin. “The silver-leaved varieties love being outside in summer, where there’s really good air flow. The green-leaved species, which come from more humid environments like the Florida swamps, prefer more humid conditions, out of direct sunlight.” Their general hardiness is 4-5°C, so they will need to be inside during the cooler months. Growth rates slow down in less than ideal conditions. Is there a rule for misting? Silver types need wetting and drying. The drying is important. They need good air flow around them and once misted, must be dried quickly. “Give them a little mist in the morning, then they have the day in a sunny spot to dry. Mist them once a week in the winter, but in summer when you have good light levels and a lot of sun, you can mist them more,” says Gavin. Generally, through the spring, summer and autumn, you should be watering your plants three or four times a week, and only once a week in the winter. In terms of maintenance, as well as misting once a year you can peel off the oldest dying leaves and maybe trim the ends of the leaves.
98 APRIL 2019
“Air plants can grow freely, just hung on a bit of wire too”
How can they be displayed? “Quite often, you see them in glass orbs, but it’s not ideal for their growth, as air plants rely on air movement,” says Gavin. “You don’t want to be pushing them into anything. They look good among shells and on shells, but not stuffed into a shell. “They need to be on things, rather than in things,” he adds - which is why displaying them on wood can be particularly effective. Air plants can grow freely, just hung on a bit of wire too. Spanish moss, which drapes down like curly hair, is available in the UK and looks good as a trailing plant. This can just be hung on wire; it only has roots as a seedling but the mature plant just hangs. “You can arrange them on a table top or a large saucer, like a dinner tray, or I like to tie a bit of wire around the rosette and hang them. You can use colourful aluminium wire, but don’t use copper as they are allergic to copper,” suggests Gavin. “You can also tie them on to bits of driftwood, which makes for a very attractive arrangement. “A lot of nurserymen use stockings: They rip off a bit of stocking or tights and use a small strip to tie them on, because the material has flexibility and a bit more give. As for securing them, he says: “You can use glue - there are some florists’ glues available, but you have to be careful not to put too much glue around the base because quite often, if the plant does want to produce a few roots and you’ve got a big blob of glue over it, that will stop it. You can put glue on the base of the oldest leaves, which can secure it.”

For Jan Plechac and Henry Wielgus it’s the ability to move through time, recapturing passionate emotions through minimal design. Designed to emulate iconic chandeliers from five of the world’s most distinguished concert halls, the Neverending Glory collection takes Neoclassical splendour and reinterprets it for the modern age. Using traditional Czech glass-blowing techniques, each pendant spins a historic story while creating new emotions and memories in the eye of the beholder. Ware bathroom Centre Returns W
After a serious fire on 31st August 2017 we are finally back
are Bathroom Centre has been established in Ware since 1982 and has built up a reputation of being one of the finest suppliers of bathrooms in the area. Sadly the premises next door caught fire and it spread to our showroom causing hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage and the business was closed for 16 months while major renovations took place. We have fantastic staff and we were able to keep them all employed and based at our trade centre and warehouse nearby while repairs took place. We embarked on this project with one thought in mind, and that was to rebuild the showroom back to its former glory. What we have achieved is in fact better than we could have ever hoped for. We contacted all of the Major Bathroom brands in Britain and Europe and secured deals and displays, these are now complete, and the showroom is open and trading. We now have over 100 displays of bathrooms and showers, along with accessories cabinets, tiles and much, much, more. We are a very professional company and have the facility to plan your bathroom, produce 3 d drawings, and advise you on all aspects of the project. We have very experienced plumbing teams that we recommend ,who will be able to complete your bathroom to the very highest standard from start to finish including building, tiling ,electrics and decorating. Why not pay us a visit; we have so much to offer at Ware Bathroom Centre, 100 brand new displays of the latest designs and finishes, the biggest names and the best service with very competitive pricing. We are located next to the beautiful River Lea, come and see us, we will make you a coffee that you can enjoy on the river Bank while you browse through our great selection of brochures ,we even have our own large car park to make you visit more enjoyable and convenient. Make a note in your diary about our official opening 8th June at 10am. We have a very well known TV celebrity doing the official opening ceremony so why not come along for Champagne and canapÊs and celebrate with us this wonderful achievement after such a devastating event. We believe we have now the very best Bathroom Showroom in the South East and we guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. www.warebathrooms.co.uk

ainforest Trust is an amazing organisation that funds so many crucial projects that protect our irreplaceable rainforest. The project supported by Wilful Ink is in Peru. Money raised will enable Rainforest Trust to secure the titles for these lands for the indigenous communities that live there. Currently they have no legal way to defend their land from those looking to exploit it. Owning the titles will protect the land from logging and agricultural expansion. You can see more about this initiative here - www.rainforesttrust.org/projects/savingindigenous-lands-in-the-amazon/ Creatures that will benefit from this include endangered species such as the White-bellied Spider Monkey, Giant Otter and Black-faced Black Spider

showrooms. Andrew Morton, Design Director of Hawk Kitchens & Bathrooms says “Previously we had stocked a number of kitchen suppliers but after seeing what Masterclass had to offer, decided to reduce our suppliers and streamline our offering through using Masterclass alongside just one of our existing suppliers, Neptune and of course our own solid wood range” Masterclass offer a range of styles from traditional shaker to contemporary handleless, all made in Britain with high grade timber and with a superb finish inside and out, all of which fits with Hawk’s ethos of offering high quality kitchens. Andrew Morton also said “We want to give our customers more choice and peace of mind that when they get a kitchen from us, they are getting a kitchen of exceptional quality that they can be

Welcoming Home By Rachel to Hertfordshire
H
ome by Rachel opened with glitz, glam and sparkle at The Dutch Marketplace in Hatfield on Friday 1th March. A welcome addition, located right in the heart of the garden centre. Rachel and her team didn’t do things by halves! For the opening, a warm welcome was given, with live music, nibbles and bubbles on arrival – they really did have it all covered. After a heartfelt opening and welcome speech, and some well deserved thank yous by Rachel, the boutique was opened to array of guests. Throughout the speeches it was clear to see Rachel has close empowering staff and family who have helped and come together to make her business a success – it was beautiful to see. It wasn’t long before there was a queue at the till of paying customers and because people love what the shop has to offer. As soon as you walk in, the smell of all the stunning candles on offer fill the room, making you want to buy one instantly! As I took a quick scan of the shop I was met with sliver sparkly pillows, high class stationery, sparkling jewellery, unique scarves and handbags. Also, the shop has a great selection of items for the home and one-off gifts, there really is something for everyone. Rachel and her team told
118 APRIL 2019
me that the shop gets stocked regularly with new products so that the store stays exciting and new, and that she is constantly out on buying trips to stay up to date with the design fashions and trends. The shop I would describe as high quality and elegant, with very friendly and helpful staff. The whole launch event was just warm with the feel good factor. Rachel’s local pastor came down to say a prayer over the shop and then impressed everyone with his beautiful singing skills. It was safe to say I didn’t leave the launch empty handed, treating myself to a gorgeous sliver statement necklace, some candles and a beautiful quote in a frame for my Mum. I was then lucky enough to walk away with a free goodie bag too, which had some more lovely candles in which have filled my home with beautiful smells, so I will be back soon to buy more no question! Home By Rachel really has it all – from that special birthday gift to a stunning centrepiece you have been searching for for your bedroom. Plus gorgeous statement jewellery and so much more! GRAND DESIGNS LIVE RETURNS TO LONDON
4th – 12th May 2019, London ExCeL
P
roudly sponsored by Anglian Home Improvements, the show will boast new exhibitors and features, as well as the favourites with design guru and TV broadcaster, Kevin McCloud. Whether you are starting your first renovation, building a new home, redecorating a room, installing a new kitchen or simply looking for ideas, Grand Designs Live is the must-visit event for anyone wanting to learn about interiors, design and self-build. As Grand Designs the TV series turns 20 in April 2019, the show will be celebrating with fun and exciting features! In line with its green agenda, Grands Design Live will work with returning charity partner for 2019, Friends of The Earth, launching the brandnew movement the ‘Green Finger Campaign’. A Wildlife forest will be created to show visitors how and where to create wildlife friendly environments in whatever outdoor space they have to work with. Grand Designs Live will continue to support their initiative to reduce the usage of single-use plastics at the show; prohibiting the sale of plastic bottles from all in-show catering points along with the distribution of plastic straws. Visitors will be encouraged to use refillable bottles and water points at the show’s cafes. Also not to be missed is the new interiors feature – The Under the Stairs Project, which
126 APRIL 2019

will see eight interior designers showcase bespoke installations, using a commonly neglected area in the home. Visitors can browse and pick up inspirations for their own mini grand designs. Judges for this exciting new competition will include Kevin McCloud and Jenny Gibbs from the KLC School of Design. Established favourites such as Kevin’s Green Heroes will showcase the most ground-breaking and eco-friendly products on the market, and the popular Ask An Expert returns with a host of inspiring and informative seminars at The Grand Theatre . As part of the linking between Grand Designs Live and National Custom and Self Build Week, talks and an expert clinic focusing on Self-Build will take place on weekdays, including topics themed around ‘Busting the myths of Self-Build’. Grand Designs Live feels strongly that supporting this initiative is important as the UK has a much lower rate of self-building than other European countries. NaCSBA and Grand Designs Live will hold a parliamentary reception on 7th May in The Houses of Parliament. This invitation-only event will be hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Self-Build, Custom & Community Housebuilding & Placemaking with the likes of The Housing Minister Kit Malthouse, Richard Bacon MP and Kevin McCloud will be in attendance. Grand Designs Live encourage the public to get involved by submitting questions to the event panel through Grand Designs Live social media or email via info@ granddesignslive.com. Covering Build, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Gardens and Interiors the show offers a great day out with hundreds of innovative ideas for the home. Get access to amazing brands launching new products and check out homewares not yet available on the high street.

rom the well regarded estate agency infrastructure that existed as Imagine Property Group in 2014, the Imagine Land & New Homes operation they set up at this point, has grown in to the clear market leading operation for Watford / Bushey / Hemel Hempstead and surrounding areas. The purple sales hoarding have become a regular landmark outside a high percentage of the developments sites in the area and as such buyers and property developers have grown increasingly confident in knowing Imagine is the outfit to be associated with for New Homes, where they clearly are proving a level of expertise in the field. Investment in technology has supported the growth with a stand out New Homes website and a Land Marketing Portal that are both the best examples of the genre in the area. Not that their growth in this market has all been plain sailing. Group MD, Mike Cole, explains “The market in New Homes, like the second hand market, has slowed substantially in the last two years. This has meant us having to become very creative with our marketing ideas and spend, more efficient and work harder, just to stand still. But in challenging times if you do keep investing and keep
