ugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s acclaimed River Cottage is opening at Hatfield House this month. The new River Cottage Kitchen and Deli brings a taste of River Cottage’s hands-on ethical food ethos to the stately home’s visitors.

Levy UK, the official catering partner at Hatfield House, has worked in partnership with River Cottage to create the new restaurant and menus which celebrate regional produce and seasonal cuisine.

Situated in The Stable Yard at Hatfield House, visitors will also find an eclectic mixture of shops, with free parking and free entry to this area of the estate.

Visitors to Hatfield House, the former residence of Queen Elizabeth I, can enjoy the menu featuring the finest ingredients, nurtured and respected from carefully chosen farms and producers all the way to the plate.

Dishes on the menu include saddleback pork burger with a wholemeal oat bun, roast apples, celeriac and hazelnut slaw; short rib and rosemary ragu, macaroni, spinach and Ogleshield cheese; and roast cauliflower, spiced yellow split peas and crisp onions.

A Real Turkish Delight W

hat Can I say about Okka Café Eatery?

A total hidden gem with amazing food, beautiful ambiance and staff that can’t do enough for you. Visiting a Turkish restaurant was a first for my husband and I to experience, but it certainly won’t be our last.

The owner Deniz Ash and his staff couldn’t have given us a warmer welcome as we arrived, and the fact it was a Saturday night – the lighting, chilled music vibes and feel of the restaurant made us feel we were in for lovely night ahead. We started by ordering a number of starters to share between us including grilled halloumi, authentic Turkish sausage and a number of dips with homemade hot pitta bread. For our main courses we both opted for Turkish Comfort Food kebabs including lamb and chicken and finished by squeezing in a dessert to share together. I can honestly say every mouthful was beautifully cooked, hot, fresh and full of flavour and I tasted best chicken kebab I have ever had! The staff were very attentive – they didn’t rush us between courses, were topping up our hot pitta bread at all times and never kept us waiting for a refresh on drinks.

It was so nice to go somewhere different and it was a real new food experience for us. I will say every portion size was very generous and there was so much food we never finished it all. My meal was matched up with a beautiful tasting prosecco and being someone who loves bubbles the size of the glass was very agreeable as well!

Everything was beautifully presented, the atmosphere was buzzing. I would agree that our experience was excellent– and I would recommend over and over. Deniz was proud to tell us that all the ingredients are fresh, seasonal and always locally sourced where possible. He describes their menu as just straight forward, unpretentious food, freshly prepared with no fuss.

Okka is open for breakfasts with everything on offer from toast and porridge, the Full Monty to eggs benedict. Also worth a visit for lunch including Okka Burgers, fishcakes and mixed meze sharing boards – or even if you just fancy catching up with friends for a large hot cup of coffee.

Based right in the heart of Harpenden, this is a must visit for all and has something for everyone.

Studio Two has an incredible heritage; it was The Beatles’ recording studio for most of their career, where they recorded 190 songs. THE ROYAL FAMILY’S SKI FASHION THROUGH THE YEARS From Eighties-tastic onesies to uber-cool kidswear, Lauren Taylor delves into the archives to check out their slope-style highlights.

T

he ability to ski is pretty much a rite of passage for members of the royal family, who are famously fond of their annual trips to some of the world’s most exclusive resorts.

Favourites through the years have been Lech in Austria, and Klosters in Switzerland, both traditional and very upmarket, with some of the most expensive chalets going.

Princes William and Harry have been hitting the slopes since they were nippers - and a browse back through the royals’ winter holiday snaps shows just how much ski fashion has changed over the years!

Here’s a look at how the royal family absolutely owned Eighties and Nineties skiwear...

Late-Eighties The world will never be able to top Eighties ski fashion, when those dazzling all-in-one suits were introduced. Of course, Diana sported the most chic outfit of this royal party - a black onesie with a florescent green and pink pattern.

Two years after William was born, Charles and Diana had a skiing break on the slopes of Liechtenstein. Helmets were never the norm in ski resorts at this time - but bulky mittens certainly were. The royals would have had to wear quite a few layers under their all-in-ones to keep warm, because clothing technology wasn’t as advanced as it is today.

Early-Nineties As the Nineties came around, everyone wanted to sport an ultra bright colour against the white snow.

Diana’s strange woolly hat/neck-warmer get-up doesn’t look like it did either job particularly well...

Kids’ skiwear became very cool in the Nineties - featuring a lot of clashing colourful panels and geometric patterns. And of course, young Harry and William were ahead of the game.

Puffer jackets took off in the Nineties too. Many featured a belted waist, but Princess Diana made sure she stayed warm in this bright red oversized puffer. It’s worth noting that goggles weren’t seen as necessary ski attire at this time, and many people, like the royals, only wore sunglasses on the slopes.

Nineties ski fashion - complete with patterned bandanas and reflective shades. Dad Charles even sported a neckerchief, but appears to have a favourite sturdy grey all-in-one which he’s worn on many, many ski trips.

Mid to Late-Nineties The Duchess of York and her daughters Beatrice and Eugenie (now newly engaged, of course) have spent many winters skiing. We particularly love Fergie’s loud, patterned onesie with clashing green necktie. On the other hand, Eugenie made a very stylish four-year-old on the slopes, with coordinating belt, helmet and boots. And is that a bum-bag we can see?

Snowboarding became fashionable in the Nineties and Harry, being the trendier Prince, tried it out. Both brothers upgraded from onesies to twopieces in much more subdued colours by the time they were in their teens, when salopettes became the go-to style. Although Charles still wouldn’t let that grey all-in-one go.

The Noughties The early-Noughties saw many skiers mixing and matching different coloured ski jackets with trousers, but generally styles were more subdued than in the Eighties and Nineties. Although William

did make a bold choice with his purple Patagonia jacket...

Prince Charles and William took a father-and-son trip to Klosters in 2004, and although Charles mixed it up this time with a navy all-in-one, he made a questionable fashion choice with this night cap.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have continued the tradition of royal skiing holidays, but instead they take their family to France. In 2016, they dressed George and Charlotte in very cute onesies (and much more modern than any of the outfits William sported as a child!) for their trip to Courchevel.

Kate is wearing the practical-yet-fashionable Sorel snow boots and a stylish fitted jacket with a faux fur trim. And let’s take a moment to appreciate the father-son and mother-daughter colour coordination here...

ory McIlroy has confirmed he will return to the BMW PGA Championship – the first of eight Rolex Series events on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai in 2018 – with the four-time Major Champion set to join Paul Casey and 2017 Race to Dubai Champion Tommy Fleetwood in the field at Wentworth Club.

The former World Number One, who won the prestigious title in 2014, will get his first chance to take on the revamped West Course, which underwent an extensive renovation programme before the 2017 BMW PGA Championship, after being forced to miss last year’s event due to a rib injury.

After a strong start to the European Tour season with consecutive top three finishes in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it will be McIlroy’s first appearance on European soil in 2018.

“I’m looking forward to going back to Wentworth,” said McIlroy. “I haven’t played there in a couple of years but from what I’ve seen, with the new grass that they’ve put in, it looks a much better golf course, a much more playable golf course. It was always a great golf course but sometimes it could get very tricky with some of the lies you could get. For them to re-grass the place and for it to look as good as

it does is great, and I’m looking forward to playing it. It’s always a good week. If Wentworth gets good weather, and hopefully we do, the crowds are awesome, the golf course is great, and the area is beautiful, so I’m looking forward to going back.”

Lee Westwood is also confirmed to play, making his 25th consecutive appearance at the event, having not missed the tournament since 1994. The former World Number One has finished second on two occasions. “The BMW PGA Championship is always one of my favourite tournaments and I’m really looking forward to going back to Wentworth” said Westwood.

England’s Paul Casey admits he cannot wait to play in front of his home crowd again after confirming he will return to the BMW PGA Championship. Casey grew up in Surrey and regularly walked the fairways of the famous West Course as a youngster, watching legends of the game such as Seve Ballesteros and Sir Nick Faldo play in, and win, the prestigious tournament, before the three-time Ryder Cup player went on to emulate his childhood heroes by lifting the title himself in 2009.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood will make his first appearance on home soil since being crowned the European Tour’s Race to Dubai Champion.

The World Number 11 (at time of release) has confirmed he will be part of the star-studded line up, with tickets to see him in action over the famous West Course, in Surrey, England, now on sale.

s all golfers know, a game of golf is both mentally stimulating and physically challenging. Golf may not be considered a physically demanding sport, but one round will likely mean you are outside and moving around, walking at a pace of 6-7km, for several hours at a time and constantly using your brain for the many mental challenges you face. There are many stated health benefits of golf, from scientific and anecdotal sources, but just how good is the game for the body and mind?

Heart health – any form of physical exercise helps get the blood pumping to your heart.

Walking, carrying your bag and swinging all increase your heart rate and blood flow. Your risk of a stroke and diabetes are reduced, and there can be positive effects on reducing blood pressure and harmful cholesterol, especially if combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle. The Norwegian Golf Federation (NGF) found that during an 18-hole round, a player will have an average heart rate of 100 beats per minute, over a two to five hour period Brain stimulation – regular daily walking strengthens the brain’s memory circuits. Clive Ballard, director of research at the Alzheimer’s Society, says: ‘Whether it is going for a jog or walking the golf course, keeping physically active is a great way to keep your heart and your brain healthy. By keeping active you make sure your brain has a good, strong blood supply, which is essential to help it function better now and in future.”

Weight loss – the golden number of steps per day needed for weight loss is 10,000. An 18-hole round easily exceeds this recommended number, especially when you walk and do not use a golf cart. The Norwegian Golf Federation (NGF) found that recent research projects (referring to those in Norway, Japan, Germany, the US and Sweden) revealed that a male golfer burns around 2,500 kCal during an 18-hole round, and female players burn approximately 1,500 kCal. In addition to the scientific research above, the NY Times ran a story in July 2015 following two studies which found there are many health benefits of golf: “A walk in the park may soothe the mind and, in the progress, change the workings of our brains in ways that improve our mental health.”

Why Harpenden Common Golf Club is so popular and successful

I

f you are a regular golfer living in or around Harpenden you will be familiar with the Club on the Common. You will probably know the course is the longest established in the area, parts of it dating back to 1895.

Merchant Taylors’ school Creating happy, balanced students

As schools’ pastoral focus continues to grow, Head of Middle School at Merchant Taylors’, Tom Jenkin, talks about his role and how pupils benefit from support structures outside of the classroom.

A

ll schools have pastoral responsibilities and a duty of care to pupils with clearly established policies on safeguarding, discipline or anti-discrimination, to name but a few.

However, there is a huge disparity in the quality and personalisation of pastoral care between schools. At Merchant Taylors’, we see the individual support for students as centrally important to their happiness and overall experience. Our structures are based around a vertical tutor group system, where small groups of up to 14 students, from a range of ages, are mentored and supported by a specific member of staff. The vertical grouping allows older students to mentor and advise younger boys, but above all allows a more intimate relationship between school, parents and pupils.

Happy, balanced students whose unique talents are recognised and nourished are invariably more successful, and better equipped to cope with the inevitable anxieties of modern life. Each boy is allocated a personal tutor from the day they join, taking a personal interest in the boy, getting to know him, supervising his welfare and academic progress and giving a single point of contact for parents.

Aristotle wrote that the aim in life was to flourish and that meant fulfilling our purpose to an excellent level. The order of priorities, therefore, are really important: to live a full and rounded life; to learn to form meaningful, positive relationships; to study the subjects we love; to pursue the interests we have.

As boys progress into the senior years, they are encouraged to lead clubs and societies and set the tone, eventually serving the broader communities which have served us.

Of course, few of us progress through life without having to negotiate significant bumps in the road. It is perhaps here that the quality of relationship between school, student and home becomes more crucial than ever. One hears a great deal about modern pressures: increasing anxiety and mental health challenges for young people, social media and family breakdown. Then, there is increased competition for university places, and unavoidable changes of adolescence into the mix only adds to our central conviction that it is the unique, holistic experience of the child which should be the focal point for care. Obsessing over whether his algebra is level 4a or 5 misses the more important picture.

Westbrook Hay A wonderful education

he start of school is a big step in a child’s life and also in that of its parents.

There is much debate about when is the right age to start being taught, but here at Westbrook Hay we feel that it is obvious; it is when the child is ready. Children can come to us in the term in which they turn 3, some will come from nurseries, others straight from home, while some will choose to remain at the local nursery and join us in Reception, when full time school begins.

In our purpose-built Lower School, children benefit from a secure setting, with its own playgrounds, and advantageous teacher: pupil ratios.

The aim is to provide a gentle start to life here, building on children’s existing skills. After two years or so in our Nursery, children move to Reception and this is the stage at which we see most children make the break through to literacy and numeracy.

One of the aspects that most appeals here is that the curriculum that underpins all the learning in the Nursery is delivered through children playing while they are learning. The subtlety involved requires skilled planning and delivery, but does mean that children largely remain blissfully unaware that they are being taught at this early stage.

The setting has to be exciting for children, sustaining their interest and one that offers sufficient variety to make every day an enjoyable challenge. Give a child the opportunity to discover that the 10 coloured blocks they have can be sorted

into a variety of groups and then built into a threedimensional shape and the seeds of mathematical knowledge are sown in a practical manner, which has to be better than sitting there barking out the rote order of numbers in a robotic fashion that demonstrates little of value.

The modern child expects to be engaged by what they are doing and here at Westbrook Hay we believe that we provide children with the best start to their learning journey.

As children progress through the school, parents sole desire for their children’s happiness is gradually replaced by a desire for their children to pass an entrance test. The success of this transition is best described as academic progress with a smile.

Maths not adding up?

Radlett Learning Centre provide GCSE support Tutoring centre aims to help close the numeracy skills gap

s a nation, maths isn’t our top subject.

The influential Pisa rankings, based on tests taken by 15-year-olds in more than 70 countries place us more than a third of the way down at 27th; meaning that more than a fifth of our 15-year-olds don’t know enough maths for everyday life. As a result, two-fifths of CBI members say that school leavers lack maths skills.

In addition, the recently introduced changes to the ‘big fat’ maths GCSE exam have further knocked young people’s confidence, resulting in unprecedented levels of demand for maths support.

As a result, Mathnasium Learning Centres have decided to extend the tutoring programme at their Radlett learning centre to accommodate students at GCSE level.

UK Director of Mathnasium Learning Centres, Steve Felmingham commented: “The style of GCSE mathematics questions has changed dramatically in recent years. Five years ago, topics were tested in a very prescriptive manner. A pupil could learn a technique and employ it without fully understanding why it works. However, recent changes have sought to tackle this. Pupils have to really grasp the processes so that they can readily apply them, and many struggle with this.

Students are also taught how the rules work so that they fully understand, not just memorise, them. This can help with the new maths GCSE’s problem-solving questions, which The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) have found to be harder than the other types of question in the revised exam.”

aths is the most popular subject at A level, with almost 25 per cent of all students choosing to study the subject.

It supports the transition to many STEM degrees, such as engineering and physics, and maths is one of the most sought after skills within the job market.

However, as a nation, maths isn’t our top subject; more than a fifth of our 15-year-olds don’t know enough maths for everyday life. The ‘maths gap’ has been exacerbated by a shortage of maths teachers, which means in some schools the more challenging

curriculum is being taught by non-specialists.

In its industrial strategy last January, the Government set out plans to expand the number of maths schools across the country. Now, it has announced an extra £350,000 in dedicated funding for the creation of specialist maths schools across the UK to drive up standards in schools and get more children studying maths.

How will it work? Top universities can apply to open specialist maths schools for 16-19 year olds to help more young people learn from the best mathematicians in the country. This will encourage

A

ccording to new research from the Health Economics Report, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) causes up to 40,000 traffic accidents in the UK each year![i] OSA is a common condition affecting an estimated 1.5 million adults with a staggering 85% of people remaining undiagnosed. The long-term health consequences for this are significant and raising awareness is the first step to resolving this problem.

Dr Andrew Barlow, Consultant Respiratory Medicine Consultant at One Stop Doctors explains, “Many people consider snoring and OSA to be the same thing, but they are in fact separate conditions that commonly occur together. In OSA the muscles of the throat relax during sleep allowing the airway to collapse. Collapse results in blockage with either reduced flow or no flow at all. The airway often remains blocked for up to 20 seconds or more, oxygen levels drop and waste gas levels rise. Both of these are potent stimuli promoting arousal and the patient wakes. As patients come out of sleep the muscle tone improves to the point that the airway opens up again. At this point partners often report an explosive snort/splutter as the airway reopens and airflow returns. This can happen over and over again throughout the night.”

Although the patients are actually coming out of sleep at this point they rarely remember these moments and fall back to sleep almost instantly. At its most severe, the patient can block their airway for up to 2-3 times per minute whilst asleep and this can mean that they’re not breathing for 30-40 seconds of every minute whilst asleep. It’s no wonder that patients feel tired. The normal sleep pattern is completely fragmented. Other common symptoms of OSA include: • Weight gain • Snoring • Loss of libido 74 APRIL 2018

• Depression Left undiagnosed and untreated, OSA is associated with other serious health conditions.

These include: • Weight gain • Hypertension • Increased risk of stroke and heart attack • Diabetes • Raised cholesterol Although, the condition can affect anyone it is more commonly found in men and the chance of suffering with this increases with age. Obesity is a significant risk factor. Less commonly, abnormalities in the anatomical structure of patients’ upper airways can also be a factor.

It’s important to note that if anyone has concerns they should contact their doctor or ask for a referral. he Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are due to welcome their third child next month, and speculation is rife over when exactly the baby will arrive (could it be St George’s day?) and whether it will be a boy or girl (or even twins, as some overzealous bump-watchers have been theorising lately).

When is an entrance door not a door?

T

he old saying “When is a door not a door?”…“When it’s a-jar?” It is certainly true that in this energy conscious age, purely in thermally efficiency terms alone, an external door is not actually a door (in the energy saving sense) when it is a-jar, as whilst open it is letting out all the energy that has been generated by the property’s heating system, plus more importantly letting the cold in!

An external door is also not a door in practical terms when it is a-jar in the security sense either, as an external door is designed to provide access and egress for the owners of the property, along with their friends, family and visitors. Nowadays you don’t find many UK householders who leave their front and/or back doors unlocked at night! Some old fashioned folk, still choose to risk leaving their external doors open during the day, but if they were to be burgled their insurance company would not pay them anything. In today’s modern society, most insurance companies insist on multi-point locking for front and back doors, and sometimes require an additional deadlock, and unless when you leave your property you lock both locks, its contents will not be insured, despite the fact you have paid a premium.

External doors are a common cause of draughts and leaks in most homes, so fitting replacement double glazed or even triple glazed residential external doors is a sure way to reduce the amount

of heat your property is losing as a result of retaining old inefficient external doors. The added bonus is that multi-locking comes as standard on virtually every aluminium, composite and UPVC double glazed external door in the UK marketplace.

By raising the door handles vertically on these high security external doors, one not only activates the locking mechanisms, but also engages the gaskets around the door frame, which creates a seal, keeping out the cold, reducing draughts and keeping expensive heat inside.

An external door is neither a container (i.e. a jar!) when it is open or shut, but when open it does let

the cold outside in and the warmth stored inside out. Thermally efficiency wise, your property will greatly benefit by fitting it with high quality double glazed external doors, and obviously will benefit even more if you install a triple glazed UPVC front door, back door or a set of triple glazed French doors.

Aluminium double glazed residential doors are excellent replacement external doors in terms of added energy efficiency and security, however the most thermally efficient and secure doors are the top of the range composite front doors, and also engineered timber doors (both of which are available as “Secured By Design”). The downside is that high quality double glazed composite front doors and engineered timber front doors, do cost a lot more than UPVC or aluminium replacement doors, but when it comes to saving energy, the security of your home and fantastic aesthetic appearance, do you really want to compromise and settle for second or third best? H

igh comfort levels, together with low running cost and environmental benefits, have resulted in a growing demand for underfloor heating systems.

Underfloor heating is the most comfortable form of heating because it is largely radiant, and completely unobtrusive Some people estimate that this gives an average of 15% more usable space in a room. It is completely safe and more hygienic than radiators. And more energy efficient.

Energy efficiency Most new buildings can be kept warm with heating power in the range 35 to 75W/m2, which can be achieved with floor-surface temperatures of just 24 to 27°C. The maximum floor temperature should not normally exceed 29°C, although up to 34°C is acceptable for bathrooms.

An underfloor heating system uses water at a much lower temperature than that required by radiators, making it ideal to be fuelled by alternative energy sources such as solar or geothermal energy. Depending on the conductivity of the floor, the water needs to be between 40 and 60°C to reach the design floor temperature. By contrast, radiators generally require the water to be at 70 to 80°C.

The heating pipe is fixed to the top of the insulation, just before the screed is laid. The pipe should generally be set at 200 mm spacing.

This is close enough to guarantee best heating performance and minimises the length of pipe needed. The pipe can be stapled to firm insulation and fixed with screw clips to soft insulation.

Another option is system plates. These vacuumformed plastic panels have moulded pipe grippers to hold the pipe securely and at regular spacing.

Timber floors (floating) Panels of insulation are used to support a timber floor deck. This is normally formed from tonguedand-grooved panels of chipboard or plywood.

Floating-floor panels with pre-cut pipe channels and factory-fitted aluminium heat diffusers are available to be used instead of plain insulation panels to support a fully floating deck. These purpose-build panels have a higher conductivity and help minimise downward heat loss.

If the boiler cannot supply the water at the required temperature, it is necessary to add a water-mixing control unit to reduce the water temperature before it enters the underfloor heating system.

There are forms of underfloor heating to fit every type of floor construction (screeds, fully floating timber floors, battened and joisted floors), as well as floor constructions that incorporate acoustic components required to

Battens are used where the floor loadings are to be higher than can be supported by a fully floating floor or where the floor deck is to be formed from planks to be nailed down to a support. Softwood joists are commonly used in intermediate floors, although manufactured I-beams are often used because they can be stronger and are more stable dimensionally.

Pre-fabricated batten/joist panels are available from Wavin to fit between battens and automatically space these at nominal 400/600 mm centres or to be fitted between softwood joists. Underfloor heating is easy to install. The mechanism for fixing pipe or heating cable into the floor is simple.
