The Value of Language Exchanges by Malcolm Pacey, Head of German, Merchant Taylors’ School
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Modern Languages declared a languages skills crisis late in 2016. Time abroad on exchange can help boost language skills and motivation for learning ...
18 SEPTEMBER 2017
W
henever I reveal to strangers that I teach languages to secondary students, the response I’m usually offered is one of regret that my conversation partner didn’t pursue his or her language studies past the compulsory level. Being able to speak a foreign language is one of those impressive qualities which sets one apart from the crowd, especially in the highly competitive world of university entry and beyond. Put quite simply, being able to speak a foreign language is something the majority of Brits never master to a high standard, meaning those who do are worthy of being celebrated. Language students show determination, resilience, academic grit and intercultural understanding. A language exchange can, and should, be a life-changing event. Going abroad, living with a family you’ve never met, attending a school with a significantly different routine and finding new pastimes in a new culture would be a big ask in an English-speaking environment, such as Australia or the US. Throw into this mix the fact that your every interaction needs to be in a language one is still coming to terms with and you have the makings of the kind of experience that enables your son or daughter to grow and mature in a way no other offering from your school’s list of activities and trips can. Language learning is a slow process, much like learning a musical instrument. Just like an instrument, you need short bursts of daily practice.
With this in mind, both parents and students need to be realistic about what can be achieved in the time made available. Many school exchanges these days are only a week long which, whilst they might help give context to the language and country of focus, will only do so much for fluency. The extended summer break presents an excellent opportunity for young people to go abroad for near on two months. Many schools in Germany, for example, are in session during parts of the British summer break, meaning time can be spent in school (where the bulk of language learning is most likely to occur) as well as experiencing the summer with their host-family. There’s more to gain than simply practical language skills. Exchange students soon learn to be self-reliant and independent. They need to make informed choices about whom they choose as friends, for example, and how they save or spend their money. Many parents fret over their son or daughter’s choice of language at school. My advice would simply be to do whatever you can to ensure that, whichever language they’re learning, that they have a positive experience, and come to terms with how to learn languages per se. Once you’ve started to master one, it’s easier to take on a second, or even a third. Whilst many schools offer the chance for your child to take part in a city visit (say, Berlin, Madrid or Paris), opting for either a school-based or a private language exchange programme will, by far, provide the opportunity to make real academic strides in a foreign language. You’re most definitely going to say something embarrassing and destroy an intricate ballroom dance routine for ten German couples because you have no idea what you’re doing (not that this ever happened to me!), but the language skills, self-confidence and independence that an exchange equips young people with make such small shortcomings worthwhile. I don’t have a gift. I also don’t have any German background. I simply did a three-month exchange to Hanover after Year 11. I managed it, and so will your child. www.mtsn.org.uk

success. Pupils are taught in small classes throughout, in which excellent teaching and personalised support ensure that everyone is inspired to exceed their potential and to shine. The broad curriculum is enhanced by a wide range of trips and activities to stimulate learning. The extra-curricular clubs offer a lively balance of sport, performing and creative arts, science and technology, journalism and problem-solving. Abbot’s Hill prides itself on pastoral care. The sense of being part of an extended family is frequently commented on by pupils, parents and staff alike. The School’s ethos is one which places the well-being and success of the individual child at its centre, and this is reflected in many aspects of School life. In such a nurturing environment, children grow naturally in confidence, are happy to embrace new challenges and eagerly take on increasing responsibilities. Pupils leave Abbot’s Hill fully equipped to take on the challenges and opportunities life has to offer. To experience Abbot’s Hill School for yourself, come along to one of the Open Events. St Helen’s School: Driving excellence in education
t Helen’s was awarded an ‘excellent’ rating by ISI in November 2016; this was followed the outstanding GCSE results which the school celebrated in 2016. Here she discusses how to drive excellence in education For the leader of a school, as for a leader of any institution, the most important factor contributing to the achievement of excellence is the clear statement of vision for that institution and for the people within its community. Without this clarity of purpose and direction from the leader, however much energy each member of the community expends in their personal desire for and pursuit of excellence, their achievements can lack overall cohesion, compatibility and recognition, resulting in individuals feeling exhausted and frustrated by the effort.
Time well spent Taking the time to understand your school and its wider community – and to appreciate its strengths and its areas for development before articulating a vision for the future – is the essence of effective leadership. I was fortunate to inherit a strong and thriving school when I took on the headship of St Helen’s School in Northwood six years ago but I nevertheless spent the first two years getting under the skin of the school before launching Our Vision for the school in 2014. I don’t regret for a minute taking this time because the clarity of the vision – ‘Outstanding academic achievement for every pupil supported by exceptional pastoral care and an expanding cocurricular programme’ – has guided us through the planning and construction of four major building projects, the development of the curriculum and the enrichment of the co-curricular programme. This vision is hardly radical but the clear statement of it, and the achievement of steps towards it, such as the opening of a beautiful new junior school building or the achievement of our best ever GCSE results in 2016, inspire all of us to continue aiming high. It’s therefore crucial that I take seriously the responsibility for distinguishing between excellence and perfection, and between education and league table rankings There are more than 1100 pupils at St Helen’s, aged from three to 18, and the school is situated in the most competitive and aspirational of markets. It’s therefore crucial that I take seriously the responsibility for distinguishing between excellence and perfection and between education and league table rankings. The pursuit of excellence must always be balanced by the concept of ‘good enough’ and the recognition that a healthy dialectic between these two is essential to enabling all of us, both staff and pupils, to develop resilience, confidence and balance in our daily lives. It’s not enough simply to say this; we must show by our behaviour, language and responses that we mean it and seek to embody it. 22 SEPTEMBER 2017
Experience is everything
Outstanding academic achievement for every pupil supported by exceptional pastoral care and an expanding co-curricular programme
A key part of developing these skills involves allowing our girls to experience failure and find ways of bouncing back from it. Experience is everything and the development of a more robust response to challenges cannot simply be taught through personal development programmes. For our youngest pupils this experience has come through creating opportunities for challenging, adventurous play and learning; for our older pupils it has come through engagement in sport, music, drama, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and Phab, the national charity dedicated to the integration of people with physical disabilities in the community – alongside our brother school, Merchant Taylors’ – and through nurturing ambition. These experiences enable the girls to aspire to excellence and to develop the skills and attitude required to achieve it. What matters most in this venture is that, as individuals and as a community, we operate within a shared vision of excellence We are delighted that our recent ISI Inspection report graded the quality of the girls’ achievement and their personal development as excellent and that our approach and provision have been recognised in this way. We are not complacent though and continue striving to provide an outstanding all-round education and preparation for adult life through our newlyestablished Futures Department, the development of the estate, expansion of opportunities for leadership and developments in the range of experiences available to the girls at every stage of their education. What matters most in this venture is that, as individuals and as a community, we operate within a shared vision of excellence and are committed to exploring imaginative and creative ways to achieve this at St Helen’s. Heatherton House School
Building strong academic foundations
H
eatherton House in Amersham is a forward-thinking girls’ independent prep school (ages 3-11) with a very special family feel. The Amershambased school, which was recently described by The Sunday Times as ‘sought after’, has an enviable reputation for building strong academic foundations. Its Transfer Test (11+) pass marks are routinely over double that of the county average (approximately 60%), and its Year 6 leavers enjoy a high rate of success gaining a place at their first choice of secondary school. “No child is ever overlooked at Heatherton,” says Headteacher Debbie Isaachsen. “We limit our classes to one per year group with a maximum of 20 children, so our experienced and nurturing staff get to know every single child personally and can unlock their very individual potential. Our broad and engaging curriculum, which is under-pinned with our core values of: Aim high with integrity; Be adventurous; and Serve others, instils in our pupils a confidence to face challenges without fearing failure.”
Learning how to learn The school whole-heartedly believes that to become confident and successful adults, children need to have learnt how to be tenacious and resourceful, imaginative and self-disciplined, collaborative and resilient. At Heatherton, learning these skills is as
26 SEPTEMBER 2017
important as its outstanding academic achievements. “We’ve found that pupils who are more confident in their learning ability learn better and faster, enjoy learning more and perform better in tests and external exams,” says Headteacher Mrs Isaachsen.
“We limit our classes to one per year group with a maximum of 20 children, so our experienced and nurturing staff get to know every single child personally”
Laying early foundations Children who join Heatherton via its popular Early Years Department, comprising a co-educational Nursery and girls-only Reception class, are introduced to the school’s exceptional learning environment and mindset from the very start of their education journey. Its children are tracked both pastorally and academically from the moment they start at Heatherton to ensure the school is always stretching those who display areas of strength and supporting those with additional needs. So whether you are interested in exemplary preparation for Grammar School testing, are thinking about preparation for entry into Independent Senior School or would like to secure a place within its outstanding Early Years Department, why not come along and experience Heatherton’s creative, hands-on curriculum in action? Heatherton’s next Open Mornings are on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th September (10am to noon, Headteacher’s welcome speech at 10.15am). A school tailored for boys B
oy-centred learning’ is the buzz word at Thorpe House School in Gerrards Cross and something Headmaster, Terence Ayres is very proud of. There are a number of ways boys and girls learn differently: • Boys learn through movement and visual experience so, learning needs to be interactive and participative rather than passive and instruction based. • Girls are generally able to sit and concentrate for longer periods of time. In comparison boys need to be taught in short bursts and not subjected to long periods of having to sit and listen. • The majority of boys learn better when they are given a purpose for their learning whereas, in general, girls see learning as intrinsically valuable. So, what do they do differently at Thorpe House? For a start there’s no such thing as a ‘one-size-fits all’ approach. Staff at Thorpe are well versed on the concept of ‘boy-centred learning’ and have completed a great deal of training on how boys learn best and how they can deliver learning in a way that engages them. For example: • Teachers deliver lessons in an interactive way via a range of multi-media packages; boys will bake pizzas in a fractions lesson and learn about Romans in a re-enactment day. • The day at Thorpe House is tailored in such a way that it provides the boys with shorter lessons and brain breaks. Forty minute sessions rather than an hour, no longer than seven-minute teacher talk time and five-minute brain breaks during double lessons for older boys. • Staff provide a purpose for learning which in
28 SEPTEMBER 2017
“Staff at Thorpe are well versed on the concept of ‘boycentred learning’”
turn motivates the boys to achieve. The recent Dangerous Week for Boys saw staff find exciting ways to engage pupils with learning and in doing so, encourage them to get out of their comfort zone and take some physical and mental risks! The boys skydived, lit their hands on fire, climbed a 24 foot climbing wall, went caving, held snakes and tarantulas took part in a gumball scooter rally, blind folded assault courses and much more! To watch a film of the week’s events go to vimeo. com/223430427. The benefits of ‘boy-centred learning’ are not solely academic although, boys at Thorpe generally achieve above the national average and by the end of Year 7, the majority attain a grade above those predicted at Year 7. An even greater benefit is that they leave there with a desire to continue learning and achieving academically, an outcome which is much more likely if they have had a positive, engaging and enjoyable learning journey. If you’d like to find out more, why not join Headmaster, Mr Ayres and his staff at their autumn open mornings on Wednesday 27th September (Nursery and Reception, 10.00 –11.30), Saturday 14th October (09.30 – 13.00) and Tuesday 17th October (09.30 – 12.00). International Mindedness Should you be part of the new trend?
W
here once the concept of international mindedness seemed intellectual or aloof, it now seems like basic common sense to be taught how to enjoy, thrive and respect different cultures; to come out of school equipped with the skills to live and work successfully with people from other countries or cultures, or to be able to thrive anywhere in the world you choose to live. And if there is one form of education that truly embeds international mindedness, more so than perhaps any other, it’s an international education in an international school.
Developing global citizens Learning to appreciate and absorb cultural differences is just part of everyday life in an international school like ACS Hillingdon. From a young age, students integrate with many different cultures, equipping them with the life skills to be global citizens and instilling them with a broad outlook. In a classroom with peers and teachers representing up to 40 different cultural backgrounds, students cannot help but develop a deeper and broader understanding across complex subjects. Students also establish lasting friendships with peers from around the world and for them, nationalities are not a label or a defining characteristic. They readily share their experiences from their home culture or places they have lived and celebrate their diversity. This naturally develops a global outlook which extends way beyond the classroom too.
Qualifications with a global outlook Qualifications and learning programmes that extend beyond national boundaries have to be central to an international education. Such programmes 30 SEPTEMBER 2017
have International Mindedness international recognition not for their name alone, but for their academic rigour and as a positive indicator of the personal development of an individual. One of the leading education programmes in this respect is the International Baccalaureate (IB), which is consistently cited by university admissions officers as the best preparation for higher education over other traditional UK curriculums. Admissions officers believe that IB students cultivate vital aptitudes needed to thrive at university including an ability for independent enquiry, self-management skills and open mindedness. his year has been quite remarkable for our Year 8 boys. Not only have they gelled to be a very effective group of prefects, but they have returned an incredible haul of scholarships, with some gaining places and offers of awards at multiple schools. What makes the success even sweeter is the memory of when they were in Year 6, where their academic potential was less obvious. They have proved, beyond any doubt, that the journey we take our senior boys on is a rewarding and exciting one; where they blossom at the top of the school and leave us in the best possible shape, ready for the challenge of senior school.
“They have proved, beyond any doubt, that the journey we take our senior boys on is a rewarding and exciting on” Our Year 6 girls have also made us very proud. They leave to a range of schools, where their evident talents will continue to develop and skills we have nurtured here will give them all opportunities for success. This year also saw our largest 11+ field and the route to Grammar School has become well-trodden by both Year 6 boys and girls. Again, we have the most children we have ever had passing the 11+, indicative perhaps of the economic climate, but also heartening for the way in which life here can 32 SEPTEMBER 2017

prepare those children for the rigours of such a demanding test. If that was all these children had achieved we would reflect that this has been a highly successful year, but life here is about so much more than academic success. Our senior sports teams have triumphed and excelled at times. Their football was sublime, their rugby combative and competitive and their cricket brutal. However, they have also found time to produce some outstanding art work, to be part of some wonderful dramatic and musical performances and can truly be said to have shown themselves collectively to be an extraordinary group of talented all-rounders. Our girls do not pale by comparison in anything other than numeric supremacy. Their sport has been competitive, their creativity inspiring and the way they have conducted themselves exemplary. We would be delighted to show you around our School and everything that we have to offer. Please make an appointment to visit or attend one of our Open Mornings. Keith D Young, Headmaster

What ethos do you bring to the school and how would you describe your role? My own ethos in education is to guide and nurture each individual pupil along their very own personal and academic endeavour within a supportive and diverse community. To allow them to experience life to the full, now and in the future, our pupils need to be challenged on a daily basis, while we provide an encouraging environment that ensures they grow in confidence and resilience throughout their journey. I have spent seventeen years teaching in and growing International Baccalaureate Schools, and I believe it is the curriculum best suited to today’s fast-paced and ever-changing world. Students learn to take a communicative, collaborative approach to problem solving. What are your school’s greatest strengths? There are five factors which contribute to making the Chalfonts a superlative learning establishment. We run the International Baccalaurate; we are and will always be co-educational; we have maximum class sizes of fourteen students; our classrooms are uniquely designed to run the Harkness Method with all members seated around a boardroom style table; we incorporate ‘five surfaces’ into our classrooms - a central console comprising four screens, a large wall-mounted screen, a large magnetic white board, miniature white boards for the students and the student’s choice of device, be it macbook, laptop, chromebook or tablet. What are the key factors in helping pupils achieve their potential? One key factor in helping pupils achieve their academic potential is having dedicated staff who care for the
individual, academically and as young and maturing personalities. We are responsible for educating and mentoring them to become confident, successful and valuable members not only of our community, but of society. However, the role of the family and home life cannot be overlooked. We expect our parents to be fully engaged in the educational process, through dialogue with our staff and, indeed, the child. How has education changed during your career? The only reliable constant in education seems to be the ever current, ongoing changes: new governments who have a point to prove through reforms, new ideas resulting from research - and for the last ten years: electronic gadgets and apps. The Chalfonts embodies a truly modern approach to education, and as such we are always looking to implement new technology – our classroom design is a clear testament. The careers that many of our students will take are yet to be invented – and we want our learners to be as well equipped with as wide-ranging a skill set as possible – transferable skills which enables them to adapt to what the future brings. What are the challenges facing your school and education in general now and in the coming years? Changes in education often mirror changes in society, and with these changes invariably arise new challenges. Today, we live in a world in which immediate results have become a widespread, common expectation and therefore an immense pressure on all members of society, including our children. It is important that we continue to value education and the process of growing up as the journey it is. A journey of success and failure. A journey that requires effort, diligence, high standards set by example, continuously instilled confidence and most of all: patience. There is no quick fix in education. he Berkhamsted Schools Group offers an educational proposition that sets it apart from other schools in the region: by structuring itself as a federation of six schools (Pre-Prep, Prep, Heatherton Prep, Girls’, Boys’ and Sixth) on five sites, Berkhamsted is able to combine huge economies of scale, outstanding facilities and excellence of achievement with first class pastoral care and knowledge of each pupil as an individual – enjoying the advantages normally gained by both large and small schools. “We are a learning community in which all teachers, pupils, and support staff are aiming high,” says Principal of Berkhamsted Schools Group, Richard Backhouse. “Learning is a high priority for staff as well as pupils: we are seeking the very best every day. But character is tremendously important at Berkhamsted, and we value and inculcate integrity in our students as you’d expect in a school founded over 475 years ago by the Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral. “We also foster a spirit of adventure in our pupils from the time they join our family of schools – in all areas of school life; most obviously on our high ropes course, and in our hugely successful outdoor education programme, but also in the theatre, the classroom, and on the sports pitch.” Finally, Mr Backhouse points out, Berkhamsted is a community that understands the importance of service: over 5,500 hours of voluntary work was

delivered by Senior and Sixth Form students during the last academic year, through a rich programme of community service. The dynamism of learning at Berkhamsted is illustrated by the pioneering work the school has done in developing a Mini-MBA course, in association with Ashridge Business School, for Berkhamsted Sixth. Similarly, a student consultancy service for charities and local government has been developed by Sixth Form staff and students in collaboration with the Oxford University Careers Service and is now being extended to other schools. The School is also at the forefront of the implementation of Professor Guy Claxton’s work in helping students to develop as learners throughout their time at Berkhamsted. “Combining excellence and breadth, tradition and a pioneering spirit: a Berkhamsted experience is an outstanding one,” says Mr Backhouse.

ringing ideas into reality is the biggest business fear of most people. Have you ever had that amazing business idea but not really known how to execute it – only to find later down the line, someone else had the same idea and really did execute it? You have the idea for the next big app lets say, but where to start? Life gets in the way, your idea fades, you continue on the treadmill of life – to find the app is suddenly available and created by someone else? Uma, co-founder at Ninja Code Academy takes the view that entrepreneurship is a mindset shift and it is easily taught. Some on the extreme end of the entrepreneurship scale argue that: jumping off a cliff and then building a plane on the way down is the right way. That is true to an extent, but risks should be calculated as to how much it would hurt if the engine does not start. Learning to fail gracefully is an art. If you do, brush your shoulders off and trundle off to the next idea…
“Uma, co-founder at Ninja Code Academy takes the view that entrepreneurship is a mindset shift and it is easily taught” Ninja Code Academy most recently gained great accolade by working with Claires Court Junior Girls. Quote head teacher Ms Barlow: “Working with Ninja Code Academy, we quickly realised their innovative Technology and Entrepreneurship Workshop is a must do. With their dynamic, enthusiastic and hands-on industrial experience, our girls were super excited and fully engaged throughout the two days. After just a couple of meetings their workshop was customised with our high-level requirements and I was extremely impressed with the delivery and outcome. Ninja Code Academy even created modules where our girls did five hours of hands-on “physical” coding. A win all around and we look forward to the knowledge expansion into the rest of the girls and boys at Claires Court. 40 SEPTEMBER 2017

Quote Uma: “Entrepreneurship, technology design, business planning, raising capital, patenting and pitching are just some of the basis of what we need to teach all students from age 10 and above. We have to start the mindset shift as early as possible. The challenges for schools is that this subject matter does not fit into a typical school curriculum. Educational decision makers need to show their own entrepreneurial spirit along with their respective PTAs by opening up the school day if they are to drive change as future jobs evolve.” Navin, founder of Ninja Code Academy, speaks to many adults and children at their code, electronics and inventors club. Quote Navin: “Whatever your age or gender it should not matter.” They cite 45% of their club intake is female and growing. Navin continues, “I hear many novel ideas all the time, but what stops people dead in their tracks is that niggling fear of failure and not knowing “how” to start an idea - the followers. This is the difference between an entrepreneur - the doers”. Ninja Code Academy would like to hear from you. You may be a school head, governor, teacher or parent who would like to help open doors to their children’s school. They cater for all children from 10 to 18 years and can customise workshops to any preferred timings and budgets. See their website for details of their other courses in coding using robotics and STEM based rocketry. Will your child be the next tech entrepreneur? Exquisite elegance in the making We speak to Lesley Cutler, designer and creator of made to measure wedding dresses, evening and occasion wear.
B
ased in her studio in Milton Keynes, Lesley has a history steeped in design and creation of beautiful, high end bespoke wedding and occasion wear at some of the top design houses. “I studied for 4 years at The London College of Fashion, before working for Norman Hartnell in the couture workroom (designer and creator of the Queens wedding dress). Moving to Windsmoor in London I became an Assistant Pattern Cutter, gaining valuable tailoring expertise.” As a promotion Lesley moved to Aquascutum as Pattern Cutter. “During my time here I worked on Margaret Thatcher’s - the then current Prime Minister ” wardrobe. Lesley gained experience in various design houses, including Ronald Joyce – the largest award winning bridal-wear manufacturer at the time, Jenny Packham and Elizabeth Emanuel where Lesley ran the workroom and fitted the clients. Her creations have been worn by Royalty, famous singers, public figures and TV personalities. Since starting her own business in 1994, Lesley tells us that things have changed dramatically. “Initially a bespoke wedding dress service, and now it has evolved to include Mothers of both Bride and Groom” says Lesley. “Currently the trend is for the ‘mothers’ to blend and co-ordinate with the bridal party so there’s a cohesive colour palette or theme. Mothers often like me to supply the matching accessories too, which can be the bag, jewellery and head-piece – a real one stop shop for them making it so simple and yet exactly what they are looking for”. Lesley works with clients of all ages – and
50 SEPTEMBER 2017
prides herself on ensuring that everything is age appropriate, exactly what they are looking for. “The current colour trend for mature brides is buttermilk with ivory lace overlaid. This is very striking and photogenic” says Lesley. Recently Lesley designed a trouser bridal outfit for a wedding overseas –“voluminous palazzo pants made from a very heavy fluid silk crepe – they hung like a skirt and were massively flared at the bottom”
“Brides are starting to request that their dress is made from the fabric of their Mothers pre-loved gown” Lesley is starting to see more requests for ‘upcycling’. One client had their daughter christened in St Pauls Cathedral. “It was really important to them that the Christening gown came from her wedding dress whilst keeping the original dress intact”. Lesley explains that Brides are starting to request that their dress is made from the fabric of their Mothers preloved gown. “Such lovely sentiment and an honour to be working with a beloved piece to create yet another stunning, current gown”. As well as traditional bridal wear, Lesley creates bespoke evening gowns. These have been worn at dance competitions and glittering charity balls. “I use the same designer silk fabrics as I used when I worked with Elizabeth Emmanuel. The exquisite fabric creates the dream, made to measure, couture experience” .

OUT & ABOUT
The School Debate
D
ifficulties choosing a child’s school can arise when parents cannot agree on which school their child should attend. Parents want the best for their children, but what happens when they cannot agree on their child’s future education? It is not unusual that separated parents cannot agree about certain matters in relation to their child, be this education, religion, health or any other matter concerning the child. So, what happens if one parent would prefer a certain school and the other parent doesn’t agree?
The first question is to consider, who has Parental Responsibility? Some of the examples are: • The biological mother • The father, if he was married to the child’s mother when the child was born or has since married her • Unmarried fathers registered as the child’s father at the time of birth • A person with a court order which gives him or her Parental Responsibility • A person named in a formal “parental responsibility agreement” • A guardian of the child (usually appointed by a court or a will) and • A person who has adopted a child
What does Parental Responsibility entail? Each person with Parental Responsibility can make a decision about the child’s education, health, religion and wellbeing. Each parent should be involved in such a decision however, this is not always possible. 56 SEPTEMBER 2017
What happens when there is a disagreement?
Parents are encouraged to try to come to their own agreement and arrangements and court proceedings should be the last resort. If agreement is not possible, in the first instance, mediation is a highly regarded dispute resolution process that could help. If the matter is urgent, they may have no other alternative but an application to court. Getting legal advice early it is always recommended.
Court application Anyone with Parental Responsibility can apply for a Specific Issue Order asking the court to provide an answer and clear direction to a specific question. Therefore the court can order the child to attend a specific school or change school even if a parent does not agree to this. The Court’s paramount consideration is the child’s best interest and not the parent’s preference.
Where does the school stand in this? Every person with Parental Responsibility has a right to be involved in a decision concerning the child. Often the main carer of the child, who the child lives with, has the most contact with the school. Schools, however, often find themselves in a difficult position when different people with Parental Responsibility ask for different things and provide the school with different instructions. The school must treat parents equally, regardless of whether they are the main carer of the child or not. Bernadett Noble - Solicitor at Kidd Rapinet and a member of Resolution. www.kiddrapinet.co.uk

Walk the MS Mile is Back! W
alk the MS Mile is the Chilterns MS Centre’s largest annual awareness and fundraising event. Since its inception in September 2015, it has raised £91,500 for the independent, Wendover-based charity and doubled the number of referrals received from people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS). John Allen will be taking part in Walk the MS Mile in Beaconsfield on Saturday 16th September. John says “I was diagnosed with MS in 1995, I had little information about MS at the time but I discovered the Chilterns MS Centre and it changed everything. I received help and advice from the most amazing team of physios and just talking to other people going through the same experience is a great help”. Ally Rumble is taking part in her local mile in Berkhamsted “The Centre has become my lifeblood, as well as having treatment I am a member of the art group and I volunteer on the Reception. I now have an enormous group of friends at the Centre and they lift my spirits”. The hundreds of people that have walked a mile for the charity have helped it deliver over 2,600 hours of treatment to individuals like John and Ally who rely on the Centre. Although it costs the charity £1m to meet the needs of people with MS 58 SEPTEMBER 2017
in the local community, it receives less than 10% of its funding from the NHS. MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease that causes a wide range of symptoms including difficulties with mobility, balance, impaired vision and bladder problems. Living with MS can be tough; although we don’t know the cause and we know no cure, we can treat many symptoms with physio, hydro, oxygen, complementary and occupational therapies. The Centre helps its members gain greater control over their MS, empowering them to lead happy and healthy lives and supporting their carers. This type of regular and long term support is not available on the NHS. Many people with MS are unable to take part in physical sponsored challenges. Walking a mile – or using a walking frame or a motorised wheelchair – is something many people can and are pleased to do. Join us and be part of the event success! Janina Fialkowska & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Wycombe Swan Theatre, 25 october 2017
C
anadian pianist Janina Fialkowska has enchanted audiences and critics across the globe. Next month she performs alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Wycombe Swan Theatre. If you are a regular classical concertgoer or have never been to a classical concert before, this may well be the one for you! But don’t just take our word for it, why not hear it from the critics and Janina themselves?... Janina Fialkowska is renowned for her performances of works by the great composer Frédéric Chopin. But what is it she likes so much about Chopin’s music? We asked her what drew her to the Piano Concerto No.2 she will perform on 25th October: “Imagine a boy of eighteen in love for the first time...then add to the fact that this boy happens to be a musical genius and you get the Chopin F Minor Piano Concerto. This is a piece of total perfection, full of drama, full of technical wizardry, and full of melodies to melt your heart. To play this piece, so full of emotion and excitement, is a dream come true for a pianist. For the audience it will hopefully be a total delight.” I’m sure it will be a delight if the Ottawa Citizen review is anything to go by: ‘…Listening to Fialkowska play Chopin is like watching an embrace between old friends…’ with Classical.net saying ‘It is no wonder she is called Canada’s First Lady of Chopin.’ The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, hailed as

the ‘Nation’s Favourite’, will also be performing a selection of classical favourites including Elgar’s ‘Enigma’ Variations, one of the best loved and most moving orchestral works used in countless films and TV programmes, including Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, American spy thriller Homeland and the famous Last Night of the Proms celebrations. Experience the power and beauty of a world-class symphony orchestra for yourself on Wednesday 25th October, 7.30pm at Wycombe Swan Theatre. Wills to have the biggest shake up in nearly 200 years T
he Law Commission has launched a public consultation which aims to shake up will making for the first time in nearly 200 years. This is long overdue when there is a lot more potential for disputes these days. Family dynamics are more complex than they were in the 19th century and the impetus to dispute rises alongside ever increasing property prices. Amongst other things, views are being sought on a proposed mental capacity test for people who are making a will – the deadline is 10 November 2017. Thanks to Princes William and Harry and numerous charitable campaigns, people today are very aware (and increasingly supportive) of people with mental illness or dementia. This awareness, however, has rightly raised the issue of a person’s testamentary capacity when they’re making a will. The law in this area dates back to a case in 1870 of Banks v Goodfellow which sets out the legal test for having the necessary capacity to make a will, even though it is panned by some as being archaic in language and not reflecting the seismic leaps in medical research in this field. It is now widely accepted that people can have good days and bad days and it is when they’re experiencing the former, they could have the capacity to make a will. Despite the introduction of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, unless the act explicitly applies to a decision, the common law test in Banks v Goodfellow still stands, because the Act does not deal specifically with the capacity to make a will. One of the Law Commission’s proposals is to bring the test in line with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 which outlines the general capacity tests for people managing their own estate and affairs. It could give more flexibility to encourage those who currently may be viewed as not having capacity, to being able to make decisions and actively being encouraged to do so. This would ensure a consistent approach and a new code of practice would be introduced which would contain the principles of Banks v Goodfellow. The other proposal is to make Banks v Goodfellow the legal test but update it by using simple, modern terminology and clarifying any areas of ambiguity. This would however reduce the current flexibility afforded under the current test. Although the proposals are largely positive, one has to query whether someone on their death bed, having access to leave instructions, is in the right frame of mind to make those decisions. Capacity

to make a will has always been and should remain a vital component and the current process puts safeguards in place to ensure this is the case. It also opens up a huge risk to vulnerable adults being coerced into changing or making a will against their wishes. This in turn could lead to heightened, costly litigation as disappointed family members may challenge the content. The formal process of making a will allows individuals to take advice, consider all moral obligations, and structure their affairs in a fair and balanced manner. That said, the proposal to provide a greater discretion to the courts to consider wishes which may not have been recorded in the ‘traditional’ way could be seen as a positive move in limited circumstances. We have to accept that there will be circumstances where people have set out their wishes but not had the opportunity to ‘formalise’ them in a will. Whatever the outcome, the safest course of action will always be to make a will when there is capacity to instruct and employ a solicitor who will draft and keep thorough attendance notes with a detailed assessment of your capacity. They should also be confident in their assessments, even if they are of the opinion that a challenge is probable or highly likely in the future. They should let you know, so you are aware of any potential issues down the line.

celebrating
25 years
How long have you been at Wycombe Swan? Just over 4 ½ years now What do you like best about the theatre? I love the fact that it has it’s own individuality. Being part of a group there is always a danger that the personality of the theatre can be lost however, the Wycombe Swan has a timeless character that has seen it through 25 years and with a few cosmetic changes that I would like to implement, will continue to bring in the local crowds for many years to come. How do you think Wycombe Swan contributes to the community? The Swan is used for a host of local events as well as the big shows. Local dance schools use the theatre, groups use us on a regular basis and whist we offer pre-show dining we obviously can’t accommodate everyone and thus our guests will often use local restaurants and bars pre show. All of this is good for the local area. How do you plan for the shows that you are bringing in? It is my role to keep abreast of what is due to tour, successful on tour and to work out what I believe will be received well by our audiences. I make sure I know what is due to finish in the West End and start touring, and I work to ensure that we don’t duplicate shows with our local theatres also. I like to bring an array of shows to our stage. There are always the classics that go down a storm like Mathew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty, and the big musicals like Sister Act.

ecca Braithwaite, Senior Fundraising Manager at The South Bucks Community Hospice, talks about a whirlwind period of exciting events and activities coming up for the charity which supports people with lifelimiting conditions At the start of 2017 I began my role as Senior Fundraising Manager at The South Bucks Community Hospice, in what is one of the most exciting years in the charity’s history. I knew I was in for a challenge when I took on this role and I was not wrong. We rebranded and moved into a building that was at least three times the size of the last site, which means that we now need more money to fund the hospice than ever before. Nevertheless, I am excited to be taking on a role at a small and local charity - it means that we can really cater fundraising events to our community. As part of my role, I am on a mission to get everyone across Bucks to come together to support their local charity, and have fun whilst doing it. So, whether you’re looking for a night out with the girls, an opportunity to entertain clients, or an excuse for a catch up with friends, then we’ve got something for you. On Thursday 21st September, we have a Golf Day at the prestigious members-only Lambourne Golf Club in Burnham. The day will involve a friendly four-ball competition (best two on each hole will count) with spot prizes en route. The day will start with breakfast and end with a delicious two-course lunch all included in the price. The price is £95 per person and buggies are available at an extra cost.
68 SEPTEMBER 2017
Also on Thursday 21st September (18:30 – 21:00), we have a Ladies Night. This is the perfect night out with the girls - we’ll be providing canapes, the chance to ask industry experts and indulge in some taster treatments. The ladies night costs just £10 per person and includes a drink on arrival and refreshments, and it takes place at our brand new building, Butterfly House. Sunday 1st October 2017 is the annual South Bucks 10k/5k road race where we will be the chosen charity. This year, for the first year ever, we will be holding a ‘Flutterby’ 2k Fun Run which starts at 10:00am. Bring the kiddies along - you can run, walk, jog or flutter your way to the finish line, just make sure that you have fun getting there! Everyone who takes part is a winner in our eyes so all runners will get a medal. The entry cost is £5 per person and everything will be butterfly themed!

e hope you’ve been enjoying the delights offered up so far at the Chorleywood Literary Festival 2017. We’ve been dazzled by the likes of legendary children’s author Michael Morpurgo, top chefs Yotam Ottolenghi and Helen Goh, and BBC correspondent Jon Sopel. But it doesn’t stop there – the amazing events continue all through September and beyond. One of the most exciting events comes courtesy of the iconic, bestselling author Maggie O’Farrell, who will be talking about her latest book, I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes With Death. It is an extraordinarily intimate memoir of the brushes with death that have made Maggie the woman and the writer she is today. Hear about her seventeen neardeath experiences at different ages and locations, which reveal a whole life in a series of tense, visceral snapshots, including a childhood illness she wasn’t supposed to survive, a terrifying encounter on a remote path, and a mismanaged labour in an understaffed hospital. Maggie O’Farrell will be at The Junction, Christchurch, Chorleywood on Saturday 16th September at 7.30pm. The literary delights continue with an evening with biographer and journalist Claire Tomalin. Famed for her biographies of Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy and Samuel Pepys, Claire has now turned her attention to her own life. Her enthralling new memoir, A Life of My Own, follows her through triumph and tragedy, from her parents’ disastrous marriage, her often difficult wartime childhood, to her own marriage to the brilliant young journalist Nicholas Tomalin. When he was killed on assignment as a war correspondent, she was left to bring up their four children – at the same 70 SEPTEMBER 2017
Also on the bill in September is novelist David Lagercrantz, the man who took on the task of continuing Stieg Larsson’s phenomenally successful Millennium trilogy. The Girl Who Takes An Eye For An Eye sees the return of Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist in the fifth instalment of this bestselling series. David Lagercrantz will be at Chorleywood Library, Chorleywood on Wednesday 13th September at 7.30pm. Fans of glamorous murder mysteries won’t want to miss Downton Abbey book author Jessica Fellowes, who will be celebrating the release of The Mitford Murders, the first in a new series of Golden Age murder mysteries featuring the Mitford sisters. Jessica Fellowes will be at The Junction, Christchurch, Chorleywood on Monday 18th September at 7.30pm. For those who could use a good laugh after Brexit, Boris and Trump, John O’Farrell’s Things Can Only Get Worse is the personal story of one Labour activist’s rollercoaster ride through the last two decades, via the very best political jokes (excluding the ones that keep getting elected.) John O’Farrell will be at The Junction, Christchurch, Chorleywood on Thursday 21st September at 7.30pm. And something sweet to finish is a turn from celebrity baker Mich Turner, from Gerrards Cross. Mich is back with a smarter take on sweet bakes in her new cookbook, Have Your Cake and Eat It. Her yummy recipes – cakes, cookies, meringues, bars, muffins, cupcakes – are made healthier and more nutritious and also offer alternatives to gluten, fats, sugars and dairy. Mich will be demonstrating and offering delicious samples! Mich Turner will be at The Junction, Christchurch, Chorleywood on Thursday 14th September at 7.30pm. Internationally renowned artist Bernar Venet exhibits sculptures at the National Trust’s Cliveden this summer
T
he National Trust is delighted to announce a new contemporary art exhibition at Cliveden in Buckinghamshire featuring large-scale steel sculptures of 9 metres high, by the internationally acclaimed conceptual artist Bernar Venet. The series of ten sculptures, by the artist considered the world’s greatest living French sculptor, is being exhibited in the historic grade 1 listed gardens until mid-October. This significant installation marks the first outdoor exhibition of Venet’s work in the UK since 1976, and the unveiling of a brand new piece for 2017; Seven Leaning Straight Lines. Venet has an insatiable curiosity and desire to push both his own limits and the frontiers of art. Mathematical investigations of chance and chaos provide the starting point for his distinctive outdoor steel sculptures that explore variations on the simple line. The project is part of the National Trust’s ‘Trust New Art Programme’, an initiative established in 2009 to bring contemporary art to the places in the Trust’s care. The National Trust is working in partnership with international gallery Blain|Southern to bring these impressive works of art to Cliveden. Venet’s large scale sculptures are afforded the space they need to be appreciated in Cliveden’s designed landscape. There’s a dynamic tension between the angular geometry of the formal

gardens and the soaring arcs and bars of the solid steel structures. Cliveden’s Head Gardener, Andrew Mudge, is interested in how the sculptures will reconnect Cliveden’s visitors with some key viewpoints in the landscape and the existing sculpture collection. Oonagh Kennedy, Cliveden Curator said: “Cliveden’s owners have all been great patrons of the arts. All have embraced the new in the pursuit of edifying the setting of Cliveden. From the Duke of Buckingham’s theatrical setting for his mansion house and the Duchess of Sutherland’s pioneering carpet bedding, to William Waldorf Astor’s extravagant Waldo Story sculpture, Cliveden’s owners have viewed themselves at the forefront of contemporary taste. They operated at an international level and we are continuing this work.” Running alongside the new contemporary art exhibition is ‘The Shock of the New’, 19th century style. This is a short, self-led tour exploring some of Cliveden’s most controversial sculptures. Lord Astor was an avid collector of relics and brought many interesting sculptures to Cliveden, such as The Shell Fountain, also known as The Fountain of Love. He put this impressive piece at the end of the Grand Avenue, prime position to greet visitors as they arrived. The works of Bernar Venet are available to view until mid-October 2017. The exhibition is included within Cliveden’s normal admission price. The ‘Summer of Bernar Venet’ includes a retrospective exhibition of Bernar’s work at Blain|Southern’s gallery in London in June along with the unveiling of a brand new sculpture in Regent’s Park. he Rotary Clubs of Marlow today announce that the 13th Santa’s Fun Run will take place on Sunday December 3rd starting at 9.30 am. They again promise a sea of red running through the streets of Marlow. As always this 5 kilometre run appeals to a wide range of participants – some serious but mostly not - and in doing so raises serious money for good causes. Participating Santas can raise money for their own personal charities – or they can raise it for Rotary. In 2016 around £35,000 was distributed to mainly local charities and other deserving causes, with a target of £40,000 this year. There will be two lead charities for the 2017 event – Scannappeal and Compassionate Friends. Scannappeal is of course a very well-known local charity, and most of us at the very least know of someone who will have benefited from this great cause. Compassionate Friends (also called Alliance of Hope) provides support for those who have lost someone through suicide, and more details of this much respected charity can be found on www. allianceofhope.org. Additionally, a host of other mainly local - charities benefit every year from this great event. The Rotary Clubs of Marlow are also delighted to confirm that Sytner BMW High Wycombe are the lead sponsors for the third year running The entry website will open for entries on September 1st, and potential participants should sign up quickly and then start raising sponsorship funds as early as possible. Those interested will need to book early to avoid disappointment (last year Rotary had to close to entries well before the event date). The website (www.santasfunrun.org) will also have lots of information and the all-important entry and sponsorship forms. Marlow Rotary Club President Peter Turner says: “Organising the Santa’s Fun Run involves a lot of hard work by the members of the Marlow, Marlow Thames and Marlow Bridge Rotary Clubs. We arrange everything from agreeing the 5 km route with the Council, developing and managing the website to ordering and distributing the Santa suits. And well over 100 people volunteer to help us on the day to make sure everything goes safely and smoothly.” www.santasfunrun.org

LET THERE BE LIGHT Everything you wanted to know about laser treatments, by Miss Sherina Balaratnam MBBS, MRCS, MSc(UCL) Surgeon and Medical Director, S-Thetics Clinic Beaconsfield
I
n aesthetics, medical lasers are devices that use precisely focused light sources to remove or treat tissues. Lasers are a key part of my clinical practice as they can safely and effectively target a broad range of skin conditions, from facial veins, acne and surgical scars, through to sun damage, stubborn pockets of fat, stretch marks, wrinkles and more. Skin can also be revitalized and overall appearance improved by reducing wrinkles and fine lines. But where do you start? The choice of treatments can seem overwhelming, with a range of devices all claiming similar benefits.
Patients typically describe the sensation during a laser treatment as like a rubber band snapping against the skin. This sensation will vary according to the area and depth of treatment. A topical anaesthetic can be applied prior to treatment, to minimize any potential discomfort.
We would like to invite all LIFE magazine readers for a complimentary VISIA skin analysis and £25 off your first HydraFacial treatment until 10th October 2017*
Here are my top tips if you are considering having a laser treatment:
Please contact S-Thetics on 01494 670990 or info@sthetics.co.uk and quote “LIFE magazine.”
How do lasers work? Medical lasers use precisely focused wavelengths to direct light energy to chemical targets in skin, known as chromophores. For instance, a laser wavelength may target melanin (pigment), water or hemoglobin (blood). As an example, a wavelength that targets melanin can target and remove or reduce freckles, brown spots, or age spots
Qualifications and research: Finding a qualified practitioner is vital to ensuring a safe treatment, for any aesthetic procedure. In the hands of a poorly trained individual, lasers can be ineffective and even dangerous. Ask your practitioner about their qualifications, medical background, complication rate and experience with laser treatments.
READER OFFER
*This offer is not valid in conjunction with any other offers or promotions. * Fully refundable deposit required to secure appointment S-Thetics Medical Aesthetic Clinic, Marlborough House, 45 Wycombe End, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, HP9 1LZ P. 01494 670 990 E. info@sthetics.co.uk www.sthetics.co.uk
What does laser mean? Laser stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation.
What is IPL? Unlike lasers that generally work with a single wavelength of light, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses many wavelengths of specifically filtered light. Both lasers and IPL devices are designed to treat specific unwanted targets in the skin like pigment from sun damage, broken blood vessels or hair. Does laser resurfacing hurt?
96 SEPTEMBER 2017
Timing is key: Whilst laser treatments can be undertaken all year round, the Autumn is typically the peak time as daylight hours start to shorten and we have less direct sun exposure.
Consultation: You must have an in-depth consultation with your practitioner who should record your medical history, any known allergies and discuss any safety concerns associated with treatment. Knowledge and technical delivery are crucial but most important is your actual consultation, assessment and mutually agreed treatment plan. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen This should always be your starting point. Sun damage is the main cause of premature skin ageing and skin cancer. UV damage replaces your skins natural glow with dryness, discoloration and, eventually, wrinkles. Use a minimum of SPF30 daily, reapplying regularly. SPF in makeup doesn’t give the protection you need.

How good is your eyesight? W
e can legally drive our cars at 70 mph – but are our eyes up to
the challenge? Mr Jitendra Tolia, a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Spire Harpenden Hospital in Hertfordshire, says that, provided we have our eyes tested regularly and wear the glasses prescribed then, on the whole, we are safe behind the wheel. So are your eyes in good driving order? Mr Tolia answers some much-asked questions. Mr Jitendra Tolia is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Spire Harpenden with 31 years’ experience. He has performed over 20,000 cataract procedures and also treats macular degeneration, glaucoma and carries out YAG laser and eyelid surgery for cysts. Mr Tolia firmly believes in treating the patient and not just the disease. 98 SEPTEMBER 2017
Do you think that the law is strict enough on ensuring people can see well enough to drive? Generally the acceptable minimum vision is fine. There are caveats though that can make a driver unsafe in certain light conditions when on the road. The most important being the failure by drivers to use their prescribed glasses. I think there should be random checks to see if people are wearing suitable glasses. Just carrying glasses in the car is not enough; they should be wearing them. Would you like to see the law changed? The law is fine - it is the implementation that remains a problem! Not wearing the glasses prescribed is something that could be looked at. I believe that on the continent anyone wearing glasses or contact lenses must carry a spare pair in the car so they don’t find themselves driving without the appropriate correction whether it is contact lenses or glasses. Apart from short sightedness, what other eye conditions can affect the ability to drive safely? Long sightedness can be equally debilitating, especially when the range of focussing ability is reduced to zero by the age of 60. The light conditions also affect the ability to focus, so a mild degree of short sightedness in the day
will become exaggerated and may well push a driver into having less than the legal minimum vision for driving at night. By the same token, in bright light, certain types of cataract have a much greater effect on the vision and could effectively render a person blind. Can wearing tints or lens coatings improve the situation? I personally would not recommend tinted lenses as they may be useful in good light conditions but, at night, would reduce the light going into the eye and therefore reduce the quality of vision. What about people suffering from cataracts? I would suggest that anyone with cataracts makes sure they have their eyes tested on a regular basis. There are three main types of cataracts which can affect vision. The effect on driving of different types of cataract are listed below: 1. Nuclear cataract- difficulty with night driving and in dim light. 2. Posterior sub-capsular cataract – difficulty when driving towards the sun. 3. Cortical cataract- usually flare, seeing a star burst type effect around lights such as street lights or car headlights. www.spireharpenden.com

S
eptember is traditionally a time of transition. Summer is almost over, and autumn is fast approaching. That makes it the perfect time to re-evaluate your skincare regime, in order to repair any summer damage – and to prep and prepare in time for winter. We all know how important it is to look after our skin. But we’re often less sure about the best way to actually do that. How are we supposed to know how
“We all know how important it is to look after our skin. But we’re often less sure about the best way to actually do that” healthy it is? Which treatments it needs? Or which products will get the best results? As with most things in life, knowledge is power. Some skin issues are obvious, but it’s what goes on beneath the surface that really counts. Not all skin damage is visible to the naked eye, so even if your skin looks healthy on the outside, what’s happening on the inside could be an entirely 100 SEPTEMBER 2017
different story. That’s why Courthouse Clinics offer a complimentary Skin Health Assessment using our innovative equipment, which delivers a full and in-depth skin analysis. This sophisticated device uses special filters and advanced, multi-spectral imaging that allows our expert aestheticians to easily see on-screen the skin’s many different layers. This allows them to identify any underlying issues that aren’t visible to the naked eye, and to assess any problems quickly and efficiently. The result? They can recommend and provide the most effective, personalised treatment options, which are tailored exactly to your individual needs. So what sort of problems can a Skin Scanner identify? General ageing, UV sun damage, oiliness or dryness, skin tone, acne, skin sensitivity and hydration levels can all be assessed efficiently and effectively. Fortunately, many skin problems are reversible or improvable, so the sooner you have your analysis, the better the outcome – especially where sun damage is concerned. OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM This month we ask Your Doctor’s Dr Riccardo Di Cuffa questions about the immune system as we head into the autumn and winter seasons.
Q. What exactly is an immune system? A. Our immune system is a complex collection of cells, tissues and organs that work to defend the body. A ‘typical’ immune system is composed of white blood cells, the spleen, bone marrow, tonsils, thymus and lymph nodes. Our immune system will recognise anything foreign in the body such as bacteria, parasites, fungi and viruses and work together to fight off their effects and wipe them out. Q. Are our immune systems weaker during the winter? A. Cold weather does not cause lower immunity directly but winter conditions are associated with more illnesses. Lack of sunlight, which can cause a dip in our vitamin D levels, is associated with lower immunity functions. Cold weather means that we spend more time in doors together and this is likely to aid the spread of viral infections. Some ‘winter sun’ could be good for you in more ways than one! Q. Are there any natural remedies or lifestyle tips that can help strengthen the immune system? A. Yes there are lots of ways to naturally and simply boost your immune system. It is important to remember that your immune system is a complex entity. The body immunity will respond positively to looking after yourself. Exercise, good sleep, no smoking, less stress, a good diet and a healthy work/life balance are the most important factors. In addition, extra measures that you can take include taking vitamin D supplements (check with your doctor) or getting outside into the sun to boost your immune system too. In terms of personal hygiene; washing your hands well and cooking in a clean environment (especially with meat) can protect against bacterial infections. Q. What do vaccinations do to your immune system to stop illnesses? A. In general, vaccines are made of either dead or weakened antigens (copies of toxic and foreign substances) so they cannot cause an infection or harm. But, the body still sees them as toxic and produces antibodies in response. Because cells have memory, if the body comes into contact with real copies of the foreign substance, it is ready to fight off that invader. Q. Can you catch the flu from a flu vaccine? A. No. An injected flu vaccine is made from inactivated flu virus. There are many different types of flu strains and the vaccine contains the most likely winter infections for that year, but not all of them. The nasal spray vaccine also contains 102 SEPTEMBER 2017
weakened versions of the flu virus and cannot cause flu. However, no vaccine is 100% effective but they do significantly reduce your chance of getting that particular illness.
THE DETAILS For more information about our full range of services or to book a routine appointment, call us today on 0330 088 2020 Surgery locations: Champneys, Tring Park Hall Clinic, Wexham www.your-doctor.co.uk info@your-doctor.co.uk
Q. If I do get sick, what should I be doing to get rid of the illness as fast as possible? A. With most common illnesses, it is important to drink lots of water to top up what your body may have lost. It is important to also stay away from smoking and drinking alcohol as these often slow down the body’s recovery time. Get plenty of rest to aid your recovery and seek medical help if you are concerned. Q. Are people born with naturally weaker immune systems or is our lifestyle influential? A. Research suggests our immune system is made, not born – meaning that our lifestyle can be very influential to our immune systems. Those who lead healthier lifestyles tend to fight off infection quicker than those who do not. However, some people are born with problems with their immune system.

Captivating floral theme for
FARROW & Ball new wallpaper collection
Hegemone BP 5705
Atacama BP5804
B
ritish craftsmen in paint and paper Farrow & Ball, has unveiled its latest collection of new wallpapers. Taking inspiration from the current trends of texture, maximalism and returning to nature, the experts in colour have introduced three contemporary floral wallpapers that are richly textured and uplifting twists on traditional patterns.
114 SEPTEMBER 2017
Taking its name from the Greek goddess of fruit and flowers, Hegemone is wonderfully optimistic and looks almost as if it has been cut from paper. Less rigid and defined than a classic floral pattern, each colourful petal blooms freely in all directions. Inspired by a brightly coloured fabric found nestled in an old mill, Atacama has a playful tropical print. Named after the flowering South American desert, the intricate botanical design combines rich textures and delicate patterns. For its new collection, Farrow & Ball has experimented with a range of scales exploring the expressive trend of maximalism, creating its largest motif design yet, Helleborus. First drawn with a pipette for a sense of unrestrained fluidity, each petal feels as though it is unfurling on the wall. Latin for the hellebore flower, the organic pattern creates a sense of growth and rejuvenation, transforming the home into a warm and wonderful retreat. Handcrafted using Farrow & Ball paint and traditional block printing methods, the new collection creates a seamless connection between paint and paper. The heart of the forest in your home
In the modern, urbanized world of “ready” solutions, we need calmness more than ever, to be able to escape from the hubbub of the city, the omnipresent wi-fi and upcoming deadlines.
I
n searching for a universal remedy for stress and feeling unwell, doctors have discovered the saving power of forest baths - calming walks in the surroundings of trees that are a mood booster and strengthen our body’s immune system. The Japanese Shinrin-yoku is a beautiful way to health for everyone and it is winning over hearts in the West. Being aware of this, Pixers designers would like to propose Forest Bathing motifs as a supplement to the time spent in nature’s surroundings. The internet is full of ideas on how to best spend time with nature. Offers of trips to the forest and group contemplation are popping up on AirBnB and Pinterest users are outdoing themselves inspiring with moss and needle-coverings. Not everyone, however, has the luxury of taking a walk through the woods every day, and with a bit of luck, they can visit a nearby park as the second best alternative. The Forest Bathing wallpaper series with the forest motif is a response to the growing popularity of “bathing” without water and soap bubbles which can be done on a daily basis, before and after work, and even during a gloomy or busy weekend. The rich green colour is not afraid of dominance or a secondary role. It’s so natural that it can appear on its own, intertwining various shades
“The rich green colour is not afraid of dominance or a secondary role” or in combination with other colours and motifs. Decorating walls or furniture with showy leaves or bark can be an introduction to developing and looking after nature in your interiors. Scented candles, mood music or artifacts brought in straight from the forest, arranged with taste, allow you to create something that has real ambiance. An interior that will not only be trendy and stylish, but also functional and friendly. And the saying “East or West, home is best” will take on a new meaning. www.pixersize.com 116 SEPTEMBER 2017

Faulty or poorly maintained gas appliances, such as boilers and gas hobs, can have disastrous and deadly consequences. This article will help keep you gas safe!
Important - Is Your Home Gas Safe? carbon monoxide. After breathing in carbon monoxide, it enters your bloodstream and mixes with haemoglobin (the part of red blood cells that carry oxygen around your body), to form carboxyhaemoglobin. When this happens, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen, and this lack of oxygen causes the body’s cells and tissue to die.
Statistics according to Gas Safe and NHS stats (2015): • Faulty appliances caused 40 deaths and over 200 hospital admissions. • 5.5 million Brits fail to get an annual gas safety check. • There were 67,000 gas emergency call outs last year in the UK. • 1 in 6 gas appliances were found to be unsafe (based on 142,000 homes). • 28% of people didn’t even check if the engineer was Gas Safe registered.
What is Carbon Monoxide Poisoning? Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels such as gas, oil, coal or wood do not burn fully. When a fire burns in an enclosed space, the oxygen is gradually used up and replaced with carbon dioxide. The fuel that is unable to burn fully releases

Symptoms Carbon monoxide is difficult to detect because it has no smell, taste or colour. This means you can inhale it without realising. The 6 main symptoms to look out for are: • Headaches • Dizziness • Nausea • Breathlessness • Collapse • Loss of Consciousness If you Googled these symptoms then you would find a number of illnesses that matched. However if you only feel like this when you are at home, and others feel these effects whilst in your home, then it may be carbon monoxide poisoning. When was the last time you had your gas appliances checked?
What to do if you suspect a gas leak? If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds or you suspect a leak: • Stop using all appliances and isolate the gas (if you can). • Open all windows and evacuate the property immediately – stay calm and avoid raising your heart rate. • Do not go back into the property – wait for advice from the emergency services. • Get immediate medical help – you may not realise if you’re badly affected by the carbon monoxide and going outside into fresh air won’t treat any exposure by itself.
Prevention Heppelthwaite, The Red Van Plumbers have some simple advice: • Have an approved carbon monoxide alarm installed. • Have an annual boiler service and have gas appliances tested. • Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer when working on gas appliances. ur showroom situated on the Amersham Road near the Hazlemere crossroads covers nearly three and a half thousand square feet with over half of that dedicated to bathrooms. We display as “room sets” showing a bathroom exactly as it could look in your home. We often have customers who, with minor alterations for size simply replicate one of our “rooms” at home. Never be afraid to “try before you buy” in our showroom. We do have a shower-head display using water but all customers are encouraged to try our baths, showers and even the toilets for size and comfort. Also, without shoes, try our different floor surfaces for showers and wet rooms. Bathrooms are probably only replaced two or three times in your lifetime so you don’t want to make a mistake you may have to live with for many years. If you come to us for a new bathroom our enthusiastic, knowledgeable and professional showroom team will happily spend as much time as necessary with you until you are completely happy with designs we produce for you. Customer service is a priority. Bathrooms should be the focal point for rest and relaxation within the home, representing a sanctuary away from the pressures of modern life. If this, to you, means warm, soft colours and curves or clean straight lines of white and chrome then come and see examples of both and indeed, everything in between in the showroom. Dahlia Collection now available on Pamono The Dahlia Collection – a monochrome solid European ash series comprised of a ining table, bench, coffee table and bookshelf designed for contemporary living with a communal feel is now available online via Pamono.
P
roduced in collaboration with family run Italian Manufacturer Universal, the debut collection combines local raw materials and modern engineering processes with traditional craft techniques. Both Mueller and Universal pay particular attention to their impact on the environment and the Dahlia Collection has been created using renewable energy sources with sustainability and longevity in mind. European ash has been a constant companion on Mueller’s design journey and with the collection manufactured in Central Europe, he felt the material was appropriate for his debut as an independent designer. “Looking around the design world at the heavy use of Oak and Walnut made me feel more confident to use Ash for the collection to showcase its beauty, durability and strength,” explains Mueller. “I understand how to work with Ash and get the most from it, not just in machining techniques but also to highlight the beauty of the grain variations and the material’s capacity for taking different finishes.” Having grown up in Austria, Mueller spent the majority of his time in his grandfather’s workshop working with materials and learning conventional techniques. His move to London in 2008, to study at the CASS School of Design, allowed him to develop his design language and immerse himself in his new urban surroundings, which have in turn formed the inspiration for the detailing featured in his designs.
126 SEPTEMBER 2017
Drawing inspiration from the pleasing juxtaposition of architectural elements in the city, Mueller has utilised a simplified line motif to create a sense of harmony across his collection. “I noticed the drain pipes on certain structures had contrasting colours which gave the houses interesting new outlines and enhanced the overall form,” states Mueller. “Clean lines are always referenced in one way or another in my designs and this is setting the tone for future developments, hopefully with some exciting twists.” This striking interplay is echoed in the colour choices selected by Mueller. Stained black ash frames have been chamfered to reveal the untreated ash below, adding an outline effect to the pieces, while the solid whitewashed tops corroborate his clean approach to design. With plans to expand the collection with a bespoke offering, Mueller envisions his customers choosing their own statement colour to accentuate their living space. The Dahlia Collection is available on Pamono on a made to order basis andcan be shipped worldwide within 6-8 weeks. www.alexandermueller.co.uk

VISUALISE YOUR DREAM KITCHEN WITH KB STUDIOS
When you decide to invest in a new kitchen, it is important to have confidence in the design you have selected and know that it is going to look perfect in your home. Sue Birch from KB Studios explains how photo realistic drawings can help.
A
professional kitchen designer will be able to visualise how a kitchen design will look in your home, as it is all part of the skills set they have. However this is not always the case for the customer. It can make a world of difference to see how a finished kitchen will look in your home as oppose to looking at a floor plan or hand drawn elevations. Being able to see a complete room with dining table and chairs, that is dressed with lights, pictures and flowers can make your dream kitchen a reality. At KB Studios in Beaconsfield we have invested in a sophisticated system that can produce amazing photo realistic drawings that will bring your designs to life. They are a great aid to visualising how the kitchen we have designed will look in your home. Investing in a new kitchen is a major decision and our customers want to make the right decisions. We want to do everything we can to guide our customer through the process and ensure that they have all the information they need, these pictures are a great tool to assist in this process.
“Investing in a new kitchen is a major decision and our customers want to make the right decisions” The photo realistic drawings are invaluable in helping customers make the final decisions and provide added reassurance that they are getting what they want. The drawings are incredibly beautiful and lifelike with lighting effects and textures, we even add in the views out of the windows. The pictures are provided as part of our allencompassing service and can be taken home to browse at a customer’s leisure and to look at in the existing kitchen to really see the difference. Why not call into the showroom and have a chat with one of our talented designers, they can show you some examples and explain more about the overall design process. We look forward to seeing you soon. The Kitchen and Bedroom Studios, 43-45 Mayflower Way, Beaconsfield HP9 1UG; 01494 677727; www.kbstudios.co.uk 128 SEPTEMBER 2017
