MacConnal-Mason Gallery
has been established for over one hundred and twenty years spanning four generations. Based in London, although with roots in the north of England, MacConnal-Mason have two galleries in Duke Street, St. James’s, the heart of London’s Art and Antique district and moments from the Ritz, St. James’s Palace and the renowned Clubs, Boodles, Whites, The Athenaeum and the Carlton Club. MacConnal-Mason present the finest paintings and sculptures of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries over six floors of exhibition space. From Pre-Raphaelite and High Victorian paintings, through Impressionist paintings, represented by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Eugène Boudin to Modern British works by Laurence Stephen Lowry, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, and Marine paintings by Montague Dawson, the gallery’s exhibit a continually changing collection of works.
MacConnal-Mason have been instrumental in forming some of the most important collections of Fine Art in the United Kingdom and abroad. Being at the forefront of the Art Market for many decades, the gallery has dealt with many of the most important Nineteenth Century European paintings to appear on the market, including the record breaking “The Finding of Moses” by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, that subsequently sold for a sum approaching thirty-six million dollars.
The ethos of the gallery has always been, and remains the case today, to source the finest paintings and sculptures, be they by artists of the Nineteenth or Twentieth Century and to make them available to the gallery’s clients and museums. The most important and principal reason for acquiring a painting or sculpture should be that it resonates with the viewer, causes an emotional reaction and one that will last. Ideally the acquisition will prove to be a form of wealth management, but it is the desire to own and enjoy a painting that is paramount, again, ideally one will be living with this for a long period of time. As previously mentioned, MacConnal-Mason have six floors of exhibition space in St. James’s but in addition, have always been delighted to show paintings at the home of clients and potential clients. In the present circumstances, this has also included gardens, garages and greenhouses! The process serves a useful purpose, it can be difficult to visualise a painting ‘in situ’ when seen hanging on a gallery wall several miles or several hundred miles away from home. To hang the painting ‘in situ’, at no obligation of course, is a means of facilitating the whole decision making process.
Lighting is a further matter on which the gallery is more than happy to advise, all paintings need light, whether it be natural light, spotlights or frame mounted picture lights, circumstances and position dictate the solution and the gallery has vast experience in such matters. As one of the foremost galleries in the United Kingdom, MacConnal-Mason exhibit widely, at prestigious art fairs in London, and abroad at the world renowned The European Fine Art Fair in Maastricht, perhaps the largest and finest Art and Antiques Fair worldwide. In New York, along with London, the centre of the Art Market, and home to a myriad of collectors, the gallery exhibits at the Seventh Regiment Armory, a spectacular and iconic building on Park Avenue. The gallery frequently produce catalogues of recent acquisitions to accompany the fairs.
MacConnal-Mason also organise exhibitions inhouse, one of the most significant such exhibitions being what was described as the finest exhibition of works by L. S. Lowry in the past twenty years, this in the same year as the major Lowry retrospective at Tate Britain in 2013, for which the gallery organised the loan of one of the principal works, which was also included in the Macconnal Mason exhibition.
The gallery has a wealth of experience under the Chairman, David L. Mason, O.B.E., along with Directors, David M. Mason, Marcus Halliwell, Sue Palmer and Gallery Manager, Richard Pikesley. They can muster approaching two hundred years of art market experience, connoisseurship, and present day market intelligence, and above all have a true passion for their subject.

Sir Alfred Munnings KCVO, PPRA
20 ½ x 27 ¼ in
Lord Astor’s High Stakes with Sir Gordon Richards up at Newmarket Sir Alfred Munnings (1878-1959) was perhaps the foremost painter of equine subjects since the eighteenth century painter, George Stubbs. The present work, High Stakes, is the most important in a series of paintings of The Start on which Munnings embarked in the early 1940’s, and continued until his death. Here the beautiful setting is Newmarket, and unlike the majority of the series, the horse, jockey and owner are all named. High Stakes was by Lord Derby’s 1933 Derby winner, Hyperion, out of the 1929 Oaks winner Pennycomequick. Sir Gordon Richards was one of the finest ever jockeys, and along with A.P. McCoy, the only jockey to be knighted; he was flat racing champion twenty six times. Lord Astor was a renowned owner and a great patron of Munnings. Edward Brian Seago RWS, RBA Boats in the Harbour, Dieppe
Edward Seago (1910-1974) was a keen sailor, and a friend of the Duke of Edinburgh, himself no mean sailor, he accompanied him on trips to Hong Kong and Antarctica on board The Royal Yacht, Britannia. Seago’s first boat Endeavour, served as a floating studio, his second, Capricorn is the green hulled vessel in the above work. Seago sailed frequently to the Continent, often painting the Port at which he moored. Seago was an extremely popular painter in his lifetime; lengthy queues would form at the gallery opening of an exhibition such that tickets would be issued to prospective buyers, who would be limited to one painting each. Laurence Stephen Lowry RA, RBA, LG, NS Three Figures
L.S. Lowry (1887-1976) was undoubtedly one of the great observers of humanity. The present family group is well dressed suggesting relative affluence and their slight stoop indicates they are in something of a hurry. By layering paint Lowry almost carves the outline of his figures, embedding them in their surroundings, thus imbuing comparatively simple works such as this with complexity and impact. As he concluded, “You don't need brains to be a painter, just feelings”. Museums: London, Tate Britain; New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art; Manchester, Nottingham

Walter Richard Sickert ARA Barnet Fair
Barnet Fair first took place in 1588, and was for centuries a horse, cattle and livestock Fair. By the time Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942) portrayed the Fair, here circa 1928-30, it had increasingly become a Fair of traditional fairground entertainment, with horse trading taking a minor role, and referred to in the painting by the horses grazing beneath the trees. This an uplifting painting, a tented children’s theatre awaiting the arrival of the crowds streaming through the distant gates, by an artist regarded as one of the founders of the Modern British Movement. Henry Moret
Le Guilly, Port de Pêche
Born in Cherbourg and a disciple of Gaugin and the Pont Aven School, Henry Moret (1856-1913) spent much of his career painting the coast, fields and forest of Brittany, but it was above all the coast and fishing communities that were the focus of his work. Gradually, Moret’s style evolved to become, as in this composition, more impressionistic with the silvery light and flecks of colour and smaller more delicate brushstrokes. Chariot of Fame was built in Boston in 1853 for the White Diamond Line, voyaging to Liverpool, Acapulco, San Francisco and Valparaiso. The Isle of Wight and the three chalk stacks forming the Needles, at the western extremity of the island, serve as an iconic backdrop to this composition. Dawson (1890–1973), who had served in the Royal Navy during the First World War, lived in Milford on Sea, opposite the Needles. “No-fault divorce” is finally on the horizon
T
he notion of “no fault divorce” is one that has become increasingly significant to family lawyers and their clients, who have become frustrated with the outdated existing provisions. Pressure for change was building even before the widely reported case of Owens v Owens, which very publicly illustrated the unfairness of the fault based system. The reason why legal practitioners are so keen for no fault divorce to become a reality relates to the animosity that can be caused by the existing rules. As things stand, one spouse often has to apportion blame when petitioning for divorce in order to demonstrate that the marriage has broken down. It is not hard to imagine how allegations against one another will aggravate an already delicate situation. The additional animosity this can cause has an unnecessary impact on couples and also on any children of the family. Under the current law, the single ground for divorce is “the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage” and within that, you must establish one of five facts. The facts are adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, two years separation with the consent of the other spouse or five years separation. According to the Office of National Statistics, the facts most commonly cited are unreasonable behaviour and adultery. Both are fault based, even if there is mutual agreement to separate. In Owens v Owens, a case that heightened public interest in the need for reform, we saw the husband “defend” his wife’s divorce petition, which was based on unreasonable behaviour. He was successful, despite Mrs Owens’ appeals, and she was left with no way out of the marriage except to wait until they had been separated for five years (at which point you may proceed unilaterally). If a system of “no fault divorce” had been in place, she would not be in a position where she was forced to remain married to her estranged husband. In the more common course of events, where neither party defends the divorce petition, a divorce proceeds through two stages, known as Decree Nisi and Decree Absolute. It is the Decree Absolute that legally ends the marriage. These stages will be renamed under the new law, to aid better general understanding of the two stages, and will be known as a Conditional Divorce Order and a Final Divorce Order. Under the Divorce, Dissolution and Separation
3 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 0
Act 2020, couples will, for the first time, be able to apply jointly for a divorce. This is particularly significant where a couple has mutually agreed to separate as there will be no need to introduce the notion of one spouse blaming the other. It will of course still be possible to apply alone and the petitioning spouse will need only provide a “statement of irretrievable breakdown”. This statement will replace the existing facts as conclusive evidence that the court must proceed to grant a divorce. There will be no need to apportion blame, or to set out elaborate examples of behaviour, a process which currently causes much unneeded aggravation. It is hoped that this blame free process will encourage a more amicable divorce procedure. New provisions will also prevent a situation arising as in the case of Owens v Owens. One spouse will not be able to defend a divorce if the other wishes to proceed. This avoids the unhappy scenario where a spouse remains locked in a marriage that they do not wish to continue. It is hoped that these changes will minimise any additional emotional distress for two individuals who will arguably be going through one of the most difficult periods of their lives. When a couple has reached the decision that divorce is the right option for them, it should not be the case that further trauma and animosity is created by the very same process that is supposed to be helping them. The new provisions should help get a difficult process off to a better and more cooperative start and, in some cases, may prevent a further deterioration of the relationship such that a greater number of divorces can be concluded out of court.

Securing a mortgage during the pandemic Charlotte Ernest, residential property lawyer at B P Collins, cuts through the confusion to answer key questions. As a first-time buyer, will I still be able to get a mortgage? Since the pandemic, lenders have become more cautious. Most have now removed their low deposit mortgage deals, so it may be more difficult to find a suitable mortgage if you do not have sufficient savings. Specialist lenders have also decreased the number and type of mortgage products they offer, which will affect non-conventional borrowers such as the self-employed. The situation isn’t all bleak though. There are still mortgage deals out there, and a good broker can help you find one that suits you. Most lenders now require a deposit of at least 15 per cent of the purchase price. Some lenders still offer higher loan-to-value mortgages. However, you may want to save more or be flexible about the type of property you buy to boost your chances of getting a mortgage in the future. If you are struggling to find a large enough deposit, you may also want to consider help to buy, which could allow you to borrow with a deposit as low as five per cent. I am in the middle of buying a new house. What will happen to my existing mortgage offer? It is essential to know that you will be able to afford to complete your purchase. If you are buying with the help of a mortgage, you need to ensure your offer will still be valid when you expect to complete. Most mortgage offers are valid for between three and six months, and this period will vary depending on your lender. So, it is vital to check. Unfortunately, the current situation means some transactions are taking longer to complete than they normally would. This increases the risk of your mortgage offer expiring before your expected completion date. The good news is that most lenders now have processes in place for extending mortgage offers where completion is delayed due to coronavirus. Some lenders automatically extend offers made before a certain date, usually for three months. Others require an express application. In 4 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 0
this case, you should apply before your existing offer expires, or you may not be able to extend it. In any case, you and your solicitor should keep your offer expiry date under review. Most lenders will try to be flexible if approached in advance. What will happen to my mortgage offer if my circumstances change? You and your solicitor must tell your lender about any changes relevant to your mortgage application. This includes any changes in your income or employment status. Both you and your lender need to be completely sure you will be able to keep up your mortgage repayments, and your lender will usually reserve the right to withdraw their offer, right up to completion. If this happens, you will probably have abortive costs to pay or you could lose your deposit if you have already exchanged contracts. For the most part, however, most lenders will want to find a solution that works for both of you. For example, by reducing the amount you borrow or extending the mortgage term. The uncertainty caused by the pandemic has, however, slightly increased the risk of an offer being withdrawn. It may be some time before the market settles down. In the meantime, your solicitor may suggest ways to cut this risk. For example, by including a provision in the purchase contract to let you withdraw if your lender withdraws your mortgage offer. Alternatively, they may recommend exchange and completion on the same day, so you do not become legally committed to buy until you know your mortgage advance is on its way.

“Life’s better now we have a plan” How Financial Management can help make your life better
W
e believe the best way we can help the happiness and financial health of our clients is by helping them to create a plan focused on their life goals. A recent survey by psychologist Robert Epstein found that 25% of our happiness hinges on how well we’re able to manage stress. The next logical question is, of course, how best can we reduce our stress? The stress management technique that worked best, according to the survey? Planning. In other words, “fighting stress before it even starts, planning things rather than letting them happen,” says Epstein. “That means planning your day, your year and your life so that stress is minimized.” “Money doesn’t take care of itself, and that fact can create a lot of anxiety,” says the Chair of the Institute of Financial Advisers. “If you don’t plan where you’re going with your money, you may not end up where you want to be. A financial plan can get you on a path toward your goals, which can give you greater peace of mind—and likely, a better night’s sleep.”

We are experienced in helping you think through your issues, opportunities and future goals to create a personalised financial plan and investment portfolio. Working with us gives you the confidence that comes with a better understanding of your financial position. We’ll help you understand your options and build a plan to meet your personal ambitions and aspirations. Your personalised plan will need to respond to changes in your circumstances and financial markets, we help with this too. This is why we do what we do; we believe a plan has the greatest benefit to our clients and is the best way, we can make their life better. il paintings in a 17th century Dutch style, painted using the techniques and pigments of the period – this is Tanja Möderscheim’s passion. A Dutch fine artist based in London, she is inspired by the Dutch Golden Age and has focused her painting practice on the style of this period: the beautiful light, the detail, the colours. The artist specialises in refined and elegant paintings; small and large pieces on fine linen, wood, silver or gold. Understanding the desire for exclusivity in today’s world of mass production, only the finest materials are used and the paintings are entirely executed using the techniques and pigments of 17th century Holland. Additional exclusivity is offered through bespoke Dutch Golden Age replica frames. Her paintings focus on the simple enjoyment of beauty and light. Behind the paintings are stories of cultural heritage and tradition – for example, she paints antique Delft Blue vases with Dutch tulips from the 16th-19th centuries. The artist owns and cultivates a collection of heritage tulips, sourcing the bulbs from the gene bank, Hortus Bulborum, in Holland. Other paintings show game birds traditionally reserved for the Dutch

aristocracy during the Golden Age, or traditional artisan produce. For the latter, Tanja collaborated with the BBC Food and Farming Awards and the College Culinaire de France. Also, the artist delights in simply painting the beauty of fruit in raking light. Tanja’s paintings have found their way into city and country homes. Large paintings are enjoyed in dining rooms and libraries for example, and small and intimate gilt paintings can be found next to a reading chair glowing in the light of a table lamp. Some collectors prefer a variety of paintings to suit different rooms – a compliment the artist happily accepts. See the latest paintings on dutchoils.com; requests to view the paintings in situ are welcomed where possible. Exhibitions/events already scheduled for 2021 include the Elite Event London, Wycombe Air Park, Buckinghamshire (14-15 May) and The Game Fair, Ragley Hall, Warwickshire (23-25 July). The artist welcomes bespoke commissions; gift vouchers are available. Enquiries: dutchoils.com or 07909 646317. Please quote code BUCKS20 for a 5% discount valid until 15 December 2020.

Liberty was so determined and courageous, so I would like to raise awareness for her illness, share her story, and for her name to be remembered so people can be inspired by her, like many of us are. The training has been hard and very cold; I’ve been going to the sea weekly since the end of May! And Sixth Former Sadie Lucas, couldn’t make us prouder. At the end of this month, she will be swimming the English Channel to raise funds for Liberty’s Legacy with fellow Chalfont Otters Swim Club friends – Ben, Zebina and James. Liberty was Sadie’s best friend; after being diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that affects bones or the tissue around bones in children and young people, she died weeks after her 14th birthday in 2017. Since then, her family and friends have been raising awareness and vital funds for new life saving research into Ewing Sarcoma, to help children and others like Liberty.

Embrace the spirit of Oxfordshire with Sky Wave Gin
H
idden within the grounds of the Blenheim Palace estate is an aquifer, supplying natural mineral water to Kings, Queens, Dukes and Duchesses for centuries. No longer just for royalty, Blenheim’s water is used in all of Sky Wave Gin’s spirits, including their multi award-wining Signature Gin. Distilled by Master Distiller Andy Parsons and Rachel Hicks in the heart of Oxfordshire, this ultra-premium, super-smooth gin was crowned the World’s Best Contemporary Gin 2020 at the World Gin Awards and has scooped a myriad of other awards in the past 12 months. Remarkably, Andy and Rachel’s gin odyssey began just two years ago. Inspired by a love of adventure - in part fuelled by careers in the Royal Signals and as a BBC journalist respectively – between them this husband and wife team have driven across deserts, climbed mountains and even wing-walked on planes! As Rachel reflects, “Most adventures normally ended with a long drink in a bar overlooking a landscape that was new, uncharted and incredibly beautiful. When we decided to invest in our first still, our ambition was to craft a gin inspired by our own experiences so that when you open the bottle you’re transported somewhere special.” Created by hand, and signed by the distiller, each bottle is a work of dedication and love. The

Signature London Dry Gin is bursting with citrus notes and as you sip it (it’s gorgeously smooth enough to drink neat), you’ll be taken on a journey fuelled by an intricate fusion of flavours and ending with a long, gentle, warm finish. It is the pinnacle of craft distilling. Many of the botanicals are hand-foraged from the Oxfordshire countryside. During lockdown this connection with local flora and fauna inspired the creation of a new gin, Liberation. Very much a part of the Sky Wave ‘family’, Liberation Gin is softly floral and light. Juniper and the merest hint of spice emerge on the palate – beautifully balanced with lemon verbena and subtle raspberry and lifted vanilla notes. Early reviewers, including gin judge and blogger Sarah Miller have described this new expression as both ‘inviting yet reassuringly traditional.’ It may well be the perfect way to welcome in the Autumn.

choosing wood for your front door
Choosing the wood for your front door is an exciting prospect. But if you’re having trouble deciding which wood is right for you and your home, keep reading for expert advice from Elizabeth Assaf, co-founder and designer at Urban Front. Should your front door match your interior styling? We’d probably recommend that you avoid trying to match your front door hardwood to the internal decoration of your hall or internal doors or even to your windows and garage. If thought of carefully, the front door can have its own independent character. It always surprises
our customers when a door is actually fitted, how little this matters. It is fundamental; however to think about matching to brick or render or cladding and also style of house.
What about cladding? We always ask whether the house has cladding – which narrows the decision down slightly but still isn’t straightforward. 5 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 0
“If thought of carefully, the front door can have its own independent character”
characteristics of this wood means it is more likely to stain black if it isn’t maintained properly. And let’s face it, not all of us will keep up with the maintenance of our doors as much as we’d like to. Another concern is extreme weathering. Is your door facing the sea, south facing, or prone to getting a lot of sun and rain? Some hardwoods are better suited to these extreme conditions. European Oak and Iroko, for instance, perform very well and can withstand some tough weathering.
“The style of house and colour of brick or render can influence the choice of wood to a large degree” How can i make my wood front door complement the style of my house? It’s quite popular to have Western Red Cedar cladding, but then you have to think about whether or not you are going to allow it to silver. Treated WRC cladding will match a Western Red Cedar door as long as it is finished in the same way; however, WRC is a soft wood and therefore can mark easily when used for a front door. The closest match to it is Iroko and therefore a good choice because of its weathering qualities and undoubtedly its cost. You may however, not wish to match at all, and are quite happy to have greying cladding with European Oak or even Wenge. This is also a very popular way to provide contrast and attract attention to an entrance.
What do i need to think about when it comes to wood door maintenance? The question of durability is as similarly crucial as that of cladding. For instance, with American Black Walnut we recommend that an overhang is in situ, since the
The style of house and colour of brick or render can influence the choice of wood to a large degree. The more red a brick the less likely you would match it to Iroko, for instance, which is quite red itself. White or cream render lends itself to nearly any colour wood but on the other hand if the windows are a different colour like grey or green, you’d need to consider this when choosing the wood too. A very popular colour-way at the moment is white render with dark grey windows and a European Oak door. These are three colours that work together to create a stylish effect. It certainly always helps to ask for samples and to physically try them next to the brick. Another way to look at choosing the right hard wood, is to think of it as an impact on the design and go for something quite different like Fumed Oak. If not for the design statement, then you’d be choosing something this striking just to be unique!
THE VERDICT? For such a natural product, wood is very versatile and you’d be surprised at its ability to blend in with various colours, textures and finishes. The first wood that seems right to you would probably be the right one to choose, just make sure it’s within budget and works within some of the guidelines here! Choosing the right wood may be challenging, but it’s certainly worth the end result. urbanfront.com

shridge House stands proud and resolute as always and with over 700 years of history, once again adapts as 2020 proves to be a challenging year. Ashridge House has seen many changes over the centuries: in 1283 Ashridge was first established as a monastery for the order of the College of Bonhommes. In 1539, with the dissolution of the monasteries, King Henry VIII acquired Ashridge as a country residence, and Ashridge became one of several palaces at which the royal children of King Henry VIII lived. Following King Henry VIII’s death Ashridge was bequeathed to his daughter and future Queen, Elizabeth. After Elizabeth’s death in 1603 Ashridge became privately owned by the Bridgewater family who continued to live there through to the end of the First World War. During both world wars, Ashridge was commandeered by the Ministry of Defence and served as a wartime hospital for invalid soldiers until 1949 when it in turn became a finishing school for young ladies. Finally, in 1959 Ashridge became home to the renowned Ashridge Business School (now known as Hult Ashridge Executive Education) and is now also a world-class wedding and events venue. With the hospitality industry amongst the hardest hit industries as a result of the pandemic, weddings and events at Ashridge House have
been greatly affected with the current restrictions allowing only up to 15 people to attend a marriage or civil partnership. Ashridge House has responded to the changes to offer beautiful intimate weddings at this time of need for many couples; the weddings may be smaller at Ashridge House however they are perfectly formed! With socialising restrictions in place, large celebrations are also no longer possible, therefore once again Ashridge House has pivoted and adapted to the changes, opening our new Courtyard Café open every weekend perfect for those weekend walks around Ashridge. In addition to the new Café, Ashridge House is now offering afternoon teas, Sunday lunches and Christmas dining experiences all perfect for individual bookings for up to 6 people. Whereas our events were previously on a larger grander scale, Ashridge House has continued to adapt and move forward as we always have, and we look forward to welcoming you to our smaller but perfectly formed events in our beautiful home. For more information on our upcoming events please visit the upcoming events page on: www.ashridgehouse.org.uk or call our friendly team on 01442 841027.

WESTFIELD HOUSE: A Georgian Gem
M
arket towns proved their immense community value during Lockdown. The extraordinary circumstances made us better appreciate what was available through the local shops that stayed open: bakers, butchers, greengrocers, farm shops and the like; and by keeping it local, residents were able to support hard-working local providers, and be part of their community. Watlington is one such market town - a hub for locals, charming with its covered market hall, pubs and restaurants, shops, community groups, and steeped in history. It is convenient for many highly-regarded local state and private schools, with good access links to motorways, and surrounded by rolling countryside. All of this goes to explain the enduring appeal and renewed interest in Watlington and other Oxfordshire towns and villages. As you enter Watlington on Shirburn Street, a distinctive pale green Georgian townhouse is a striking feature of the town. Symmetrical, with cast iron railings and large windows to the front, the house has played many roles over the centuries, lattermost as a comfortable and elegant four-bedroom family home, ‘Westfield House’. The Georgians loved their colourful exteriors, symmetry, high ceilings, big windows, opulent features and solid construction. Westfield House blends these original features perfectly with more modern conveniences. The house extends far back from the road, where double electric gates reveal an oasis: generous off-road parking in a private gravel driveway, and a pretty walled garden laid to lawn and ornamental beds, with a paved dining area. It is clear that the current owners enjoy ‘al fresco’ living. Inside the house, hidden behind the original front door, a generous living space is revealed. A pair of large reception rooms - a formal sitting room and an expansive home office / library - lead from the York stone hallway. A formal dining

room leads to the family kitchen and more recent family room extension which has French doors to the garden. A boot room, a larder and a utility room add the essential convenience required for family living. A well-lit paved cellar extends beneath part of the house, and provides ample storage. Up the broad staircase to the landing, the accommodation is split into two segments: the principal bedroom suite, and the family bedrooms. The principal bedroom is a dramatic space, luxurious with very high ceilings and a fireplace, and an enormous picture window which overlooks the private garden. The bedroom has its own dressing room and en suite bathroom. The family bedrooms across the landing comprise three double bedrooms, one with en suite, a family bathroom, and a useful storage cupboard. Each room has built-in wardrobes, and attractive views to the front of the house towards National Trust land - Watlington Hill and its prized ‘White Mark’. This well-loved and sumptuous family home is available for viewing with Philip Booth Esq. sales@philipboothesq.com or 01491 876544 www.philipboothesq.com

Tried and tested: mascaras Our testers get to grips with some of the year’s biggest make-up launches.
Urban Decay
Hourglass Claire Spreadbury tried: Hourglass Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara, £29 Hourglass’ latest release comes with lots of big promises – intense length, lift, definition, the look of extensions, while also being filmforming and smudge-proof, yet easy to wash off. To be honest, I don’t listen to a lot of the hype when it comes to mascara. We all have personal preferences, but my biggest bugbear is the black bits that sit underneath my lashes and ultimately result in panda eye. I struggle with it so much that I’ve resorted to wearing waterproof mascara on a daily basis. On first application, I did have a few speckles of black beneath my eye, but after that, I didn’t. I’ve worn it all day and night and not needed to wipe away dark smudges at all. The wand itself is easy to use and the mascara goes on nicely and stays put – but most importantly, the film-forming technology really does work – I’m impressed! 7 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 0
Huda Beauty Sarah Marshall tried: Huda Beauty Legit Lashes, £24, Boots This isn’t the easiest mascara to apply, but with a bit of effort, it does deliver dramatic results. There are two brushes: one thick wand designed to build layers of volume and another finer, curved applicator to finish the look. I’m generally slap dash when it comes to make-up, so it took me a few attempts to master a tidy, clump-free finish. I found the volume brush slightly too chunky and unwieldy, but it does thicken lashes after only a few flicks, allowing you to work quickly before unsightly spider legs form. For me, the curling wand was a revelation. Along with coating tips for that doe-eyed Bambi effect, it’s excellent for catching tricky corner bits and thinner lower lashes. I used it alone on these areas to get the best fluttery finish. Capable of creating multiple looks, this has to be one of the most versatile mascaras out there.
Liz Connor tried: Urban Decay Lash Freak, £21 As someone with blonde and fairly unremarkable lashes, I’ll take any extra help I can get in the eye department, and Urban Decay’s latest launch promises to do the trick; the cult beauty brand claims it can behold the wearer with 23.6 times more volume and up to 40% more visible lash length. The beauty of this mascara lies in its asymmetrical brush – rather than having bristles all over, the wand is smooth on one side to help hit every nook and cranny of your lash line. The bristled tip is designed to define and separate lashes (even those fiddly annoying ones in the inner corners), while the curved side adds lift at the lash root. I was genuinely impressed at how quickly I could build a false lash effect with just a few swipes of the wand – although I did find that one too many gave me a bit of a clumpy Sixties look, so my advice would be to go gently, as a little of this product goes a long way. That being said, I’m pleased to say that this mascara lived up to its 20-hour guarantee – I wore it all day and managed to avoid looking in the mirror to find either flaking or raccoon eyes. This is a great purchase for anyone looking to amp up their eye look this season.

Prioritising Your Health This Winter This month we ask Your Doctor’s Dr Riccardo Di Cuffa questions about how to prepare yourself health-wise going into this very complicated winter. Q. What can I do to make sure I am in as good health as possible this winter? A. This winter it’s more important than ever to look make your health a priority. With Covid-19 an ongoing threat, take steps to protect yourself where you can against other viruses such as the flu, get the flu jab as early as you can this autumn. Get enough quality sleep and make sure your diet is packed with fruit, veg and fibre to give yourself a vitamin boost to support your good health this winter. Get out in the fresh air whenever you can, regularly take exercise, and remember to stay hydrated. Avoiding people who you know aren’t feeling well is vital – if you have symptoms of Covid-19, seek a test and take the necessary isolation precautions. Always practice good hygiene especially washing your hands regularly and thoroughly. Try and keep stress levels down which I know is easier said than done for some right now. 8 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 0
Q. Why is the Covid-19 more dangerous in the winter than summer months? A. Cold weather means that we spend more time indoors together and this is likely to aid the spread of viral infections like Covid-19. Cold weather does not lower your immunity but a lack of exposure to sunlight can cause a dip in our vitamin D levels which is associated with lower immunity functions. Q. Should I still visit a doctor if I am ill? A. At the moment it can be hard to know what to do if you don’t feel well but it is really important to call your GP if you feel poorly or have noticed any thing you would have previously wanted to see a doctor about. GPs are still very much open, and many consultations can be done by phone or video in the first instance. Don’t ever put off calling your GP if you are worried about your health, even during this time as we circumnavigate Covid-19.

Beaconsfield Outpatient Centre opens in the midst of a global health crisis
“Our focus has shifted during the pandemic to simply provide patients access to a range of healthcare services that are otherwise currently unavailable” - Gary Robinson, Chief Executive.
N
o one can contest that the focus of the past eight months, arguably longer, has been Covid-19. What was initially considered a passing event, the reality hit home in March this year, when the pandemic spiralled out of control, and the UK, and the rest of the world, went into lockdown. The impact took everybody by surprise and not least the healthcare sector. Almost all hospitals, NHS and private, ceased with non-urgent surgical cases, and patients, especially those with chronic diseases, were left wondering, and worrying, how their health would be managed. A medical provider that felt the impact of the crisis on a local level was Doctor Now, an established private medical practice in Beaconsfield. Doctor Now was at the final stages of launching The Beaconsfield Clinic, a private outpatient centre to complement their existing 24hr GP service. Dr Brian McGirr, Founder and Medical Director “The project has always been an ambition for Doctor Now and I am delighted that we have managed to stay on track during an extremely challenging period. We thank our loyal patients, our local NHS GP colleagues and consultant

community in supporting what has become a vital hub for patients in gaining access to primary care, secondary care and diagnostic services”. The services available at the clinic include 24hr GP access, gynaecology and fertility, cardiology, orthopaedics, physiotherapy, urology, ophthalmology, podiatry, general surgery, dermatology, pain management and access to a range of radiology services. Gary Robinson, Chief Executive “It has without doubt been a challenging few months, however, we have remained focused on launching The Beaconsfield Clinic so that we can provide patients with rapid access to a range medical services that have otherwise been unavailable. I am extremely proud of the team in their efforts to serve and support our patient community”. The Beaconsfield Clinic premises is a stunning period building in beautiful grounds with the primary goal of providing patients with a seamless service in a welcoming and relaxing environment. “We still have much to achieve, however, our current focus is in supporting our local community in providing access to healthcare, especially for those whom are suffering or worried about a partner or family member”. Doctor Now and The Beaconsfield Clinic are both private healthcare providers with a unique relationship with local NHS services. As the demand for rapid access to healthcare increases and the population’s attitude to health evolves, Doctor Now and The Beaconsfield Clinic are uniquely positioned to provide a reactive, and more importantly, proactive healthcare service.

Tobias Oliver Interiors Autumn Style Edit
A
utumn is a great time to be thinking about putting the last few months behind us and move towards fresh styling, as we welcome the new season into our homes. Autumn is the most stunning season, as we see the vibrant colours that nature presents us with as the leaves begin to turn, and the natural light often feels softer and more ambient than the harsh glare of summer sun. When it comes to our interiors, there are some things we can introduce to create that cosy feeling into our living space. To follow are a few hints and tips … however, if you would like a bespoke design consultation please stop by our showroom on Berkhamsted High Street or give us a call on 01442 818 122. Colour is a great place to start when considering the overall feel of a room. For example, if you’re looking to bring about a feeling of tranquillity, a soft and neutral green is great, and works very well in smaller rooms. It’s a really versatile shade that seems to completely change when you combine it with different palettes - bring out its cooler side by mixing it with steely greys or soften it up with creams and light pinks. If you’re not looking to redecorate right now, Autumn can still be the perfect time to inject a feeling of glamour and intimacy, which is easily achieved with a few key accessories. From even just the simplest of additions, such a stunning candle. We love our new Nirvana candles from Baobab collection - they add an instant feeling of sophistication and of course a heavenly scent to your home. 9 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 0
Varied textures add extra interest to autumnal cosiness - we love layering up different textures in the same, or very similar colours. For example, luxurious cashmere cushions by Oyuna work perfectly with a sumptuous lambswool angora throw by Begg x Co. This is perfect if you are big on neutrals and need to find different ways to decorate your rooms without using too many colours.
Finally, if you haven’t been lucky enough to get away this summer, then take some travel style inspiration from our brand-new range of books from Assouline, the perfect accessory for any coffee table.
“When it comes to our interiors, there are some things we can introduce to create that cosy feeling into our living space”
Or, for something a little different, the home bar trend isn’t going anywhere fast, with Covid still hot on our heels. Lockdown restrictions may have eased a little, but a Gatsby-like home bar is still a must in the home this year!

CORONAVIRUS SAFETY: USING A TRADER
oronavirus has thrown a spanner in the works! Excuse the pun. So, what steps should be followed if you need a tradesperson to enter your home? There are many circumstances when inviting someone into your home is unavoidable, for example, if you experience a plumbing or heating problem. Furthermore, as homeowners are stuck at home for longer periods of time, there is a greater need to have their gas appliances running safely and efficiently. Additionally, many homeowners are upgrading old, inefficient boilers to help reduce energy bills and ensure reliability though the winter months. Here is a guide to help homeowners. • Use a trusted and reliable company with a good reputation. Tradespeople should have PPE and be prepared before entering your home. You shouldn’t have to ask them to wear a mask! • When booking an appointment provide as much information about your requirements as possible. This will help them prepare accordingly and help minimise the time spent at a property. They might even be able to help over the phone. • Always advise a tradesperson if you have been shielding or are particularly vulnerable to the Coronavirus. This includes those with underlying health issues and the elderly. • A tradesperson should not be entering your home if they themselves are showing symptoms of the virus. Likewise, if you are experiencing symptoms you should advise the company and reschedule for another time. • If you suspect a gas leak or have an emergency, then please DO NOT HESITATE in seeking help. Carbon Monoxide can be deadly. It is recommended that gas appliances are well maintained and serviced by a registered gas safe engineer annually. • Always keep a safe distance. Tradespeople should abide by the government guidelines keeping a minimum of 2 meters away. • Avoid sharing objects. A tradesperson will have their own tools and equipment and you should not offer them food or drink. • Keep windows and doors open while the tradesperson is in your home.
1 0 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 2 0
• You should wipe clean and disinfect the area to help protect tradespeople. For example, cleaning door handles, knobs or light switches. A professional tradesperson will always clean their work space once they have completed a task. This article was written by Heppelthwaite The Red Van Plumbers. CURRENT KITCHEN TRENDS FROM
LITTLE EARTH DESIGN
Little Earth Design are a bespoke kitchen and furniture company based in Henleyon-Thames. Life Magazine sat down with the company’s founder Eliot Strudwick, to discuss some of the standout current kitchen trends and how best to implement them.
Two Tone Two tone contrasting finishes are becoming an increasingly desirable aesthetic in the kitchen according to Eliot. Darker cabinets and surrounding lighter shades can add depth and character to space when used in the right pairings. Eliot suggests that when using different colour kitchen cabinets to the island or other kitchen fittings, consider using the second tone as an accent that compliments but not overwhelms. Use of a darker shade on your lower cabinets and a lighter shade on top can help to ground the area. The lighter shade on the upper cabinets will help draw the eye upward and create a feeling of space.

Statement Stone
Function and Finesse Trends at the upper end of the market aim to create an environment that looks stunning and also meets the various lifestyle demands a kitchen might be required for such as work, family gatherings or entertaining. Little Earth Design address this challenge by offering a fully bespoke service. Off the shelf solutions might appear to suit initially, but as you spend more time with your kitchen you may start to realise that it is not optimised to your needs or ensuring the longevity of the cabinetry. Eliot explains ‘’we consult with clients in the very early stages in order to fully understand the kitchens full purpose. This informs our recommendations on the positioning of cabinetry, appliances and zonal lighting and ensures we achieve the appropriate style/function balance’’
This year has seen Quartz countertop preferences increase as a higher end alternative to Granite. Quartz offers a fabulous colour range and consistency whilst also being an extremely durable and non-porous surface. Marble is a timeless, elegant and durable choice. Thanks to the presence of various minerals and salts, marble takes on stunning unique patterns and colours, from purest white to shimmering greens. Solid Surface Composite (Corian, Maia, Encore) with no visible joins, can be fashioned to create striking moulded upstands and sinks to offer a stunning and seamless look.
Tap Trends Taps are the most used fixed fixture and also play an aesthetic role as the centrepiece of the sink. The favourability of matte black, rose/brushed gold has increased substantially over the past few years at the expense of chrome. Eliot suggested that the increase in popularity for matte black taps ‘’is likely due to the increasing popularity of contemporary, Scandi and industrial influences’’ Avoid limiting yourself to just using just one of those options – matte black can be combined with gold accents to give a striking finish. littleearthdesign.co.uk

We have seen vast evolution in home automation systems over the 20 years we have been in business. This has allowed us to offer a greater depth of personalisation with a wider range of intelligent functionality, via user-friendly devices such as voice control, iPads, phones, and touch-panels. We are skilled in taking technically advanced systems and turning them into easy,

intuitive, adaptable solutions for day-to-day life. From security features, intelligent shading, sound zoning, scene setting, and holiday mode, each home automation solution is uniquely developed and programmed to the client’s needs. Sustainability is another key trend; and we look at ways technology can help such as intelligent lighting which turns itself off, blinds and curtains that open and close to control the temperature within the home, thus reducing energy usage. At the moment we are seeing minimal design to finishes. Less is more when selecting high quality finishes such as simple, sleek face plates for wall panels. We are known for transforming tired rooms into spectacular spaces, though what really sets us apart from other suppliers, is our breadth of service and our stringent quality assurance system. We offer the whole range, from design, supply, project management and installation to follow on service and support. We are manufacturer agnostic, choosing only the best solutions for our clients and we use our purchasing power to generate savings for them too. We pride ourselves on delivering systems and solutions for a wide range of budgets, which complement, and are sympathetic to, the lifestyles of our clients and the fabric of their homes.

E
ach year, a new decorative trend emerges for the festive season, from midnight blue walls to blush pink accessories, we’ve seen many fabulous styles over the years. This year, a new trend surfaces: Festive Fairy Tales. Inspired by the magic and pure elegance of snow covered castles, glistening silver crowns, and frosted windows, this style takes a deep dive into the land of kings & queens. Mixed metallics are the perfect element to translate this trend into your home, which can be introduced in many different forms. Think silver snowflake fairy lights strung across chimney breasts and distressed metallic LED candles dotted around the room. To give your Christmas tree

the royal treatment, swap out the traditional tree topper for an illuminated crown. Foliage is an essential part of any Christmas décor, which’ll effortlessly carry your theme through the home, choose blue spruce wreaths and garlands adorned with an abundance of white berries to dress doors and wrap around bannisters, creating a truly regal feeling to your interior. Whilst cool tones are synonymous with this trend, it is important to maintain an inviting warm glow, welcoming you home as you step in from brisk winter evenings. By pairing warm white micro lights with your frosted and metallic finishes, you’ll take the meaning of festive fairy tales to a new level.
