hen I speak to parents about what they want for their children, the most usual answer is simply to be happy. They also want to know, however, that their children will leave school ready for the future with the aptitudes they need to thrive. But what are those characteristics and skills? Recent research from the World Economic Forum asked executives from the world’s leading companies what they thought would be the most important job skills in 2020. They cited complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and emotional intelligence as the top five aptitudes. Education must give young people the foundations of literacy, numeracy and scientific knowledge plus a broad range of skills readying them for university and beyond. The International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) programmes are two such qualifications that successfully marry academic rigour with the development of a global mindset and other valuable life skills; all nurtured here at ACS International School Hillingdon. The IB allows students to select a wide range of topics to study across the sciences, arts and languages, ensuring they graduate with a mix of skills rather than the comparatively narrow subject areas of A Level study for instance. select specific subjects from across the curriculum and complete them in one year. By offering AP and the IB, ACS Hillingdon is able to provide tailored education for each student, relevant to their passions and learning style. from one day to the next and for that reason we are not going to spoon-feed the boys but ensure they are enthused about education and are nurtured to be naturally inquisitive. They will need that for tomorrow’s world. We are also a relatively small but growing school and that enables us to know our pupils incredibly well. No one gets lost here so there are no little fish in a big pond. As a Father of two boys, what do you think is the most important thing about education? They have got to enjoy it and have the breadth of experience that will enable them to unearth the talents that they may not yet recognize in themselves. How are you settling into your new role? It is terrifically exciting and I can’t believe how much I am enjoying it. I have a fantastic staff who have been very welcoming and from whom there is such a buzz of energy. Parents and pupils have been equally warm and there is a wonderful sense of partnership that gives me great confidence that this is going to be a school where things can really happen. What attracted you to Thorpe House School? Thorpe House is a school that is not prepared to stand still. The Governors are very supportive, the staff are energetic and with a real sense of ambition for the pupils and this is a school that I know will go from strength to strength. I also felt that my own boys would really flourish here and that was always going to be crucial for us as a family. What is your long-term vision for the school? We have a new Sports Hall and additional classrooms due to be completed in February. This will be a game-changer for us in terms of being able to really open up the school site and maximize its potential. Thorpe House School is the only all through boys school in Buckinghamshire, what do you think makes it stand out from the others? The challenge here is for the boys to always be reflecting on how they can improve on something

At home with your boys, what do you normally get up to? Lego features strongly but we enjoy board games and getting out and about - there’s a lot to see out there! What lessons has your career at being a headmaster taught you? It’s early days but I would already say that the most important lesson is recognizing what those around you can do and to draw upon their experience and support them to run with their ideas. Top Thames walks you can reach by train
Exploring the Thames Path National Trail couldn’t be easier, just hop on a Great Western Railway (GWR) train to join one of seven walking routes, passing through some of the country’s finest towns and cities, including Oxford, Marlow and Windsor

he River Thames is without a doubt one of the most famous in the world. Not only does the mighty waterway run through the UK’s capital, where it has been a source of income and inspiration for many a local, including the great Shakespeare himself, it also quietly meanders among some of the nation’s finest countryside. Put quite simply, the River Thames is the lifeblood of so many of our great towns and cities, such as Oxford, Reading, Windsor, Marlow and Henley-upon-Thames. From its source in

the Cotswold hills, it passes through exceptional, unspoilt landscape, including three areas of outstanding natural beauty. The Thames Path National Trail – a walking route that follows the great river for 184 miles from source to sea – is without a doubt the ideal way to explore the area. Oxford to Abingdon-on-Thames This nine-mile amble begins in the historic university city of Oxford, with its famous colleges, including Christ Church – the alma mater of no less than 13 Prime Ministers. Heading south towards picturesque Abingdon, it’s an exceptionally rural route, passing several locks on the way, as well as the impressive weir known as the Sandford Lasher. Abingdon itself is a lively, historic market town with a decent museum and some great architecture.

Marlow to Henley-on-Thames When you arrive by train in Marlow, head towards the town centre to begin this eight and a half mile walk. A fashionable riverside resort, Marlow has been home to some of the biggest names in literature, including T.S. Eliot and Mary Shelley. It remains a vibrant market town, full of boutique shops, restaurants and bistros. Once you reach the river, turn right towards Henley-on-Thames, the famous regatta town, passing Bisham Church and the stunning Bisham Abbey.
Windsor to Staines The right royal riverside town of Windsor is a mustsee destination. Just a 35-minute train journey from London Paddington, it’s a great place to start this eight-mile walk towards the Surrey town of Staines. While in Windsor, be sure to visit the beautiful castle, with it’s distinctive Long Walk, leading to its ornate entrance. Australian Artist, Anthony White opens his first solo show in the UK with Informality words: Rob Maconachie.
B
orn in Australia and based in Paris since 2009, Anthony White is interested in the role of art in fostering engagement, political awareness and social responsibility. White’s first solo exhibition in the U.K., A curious eye never runs dry, takes as its starting point the words of activist and publisher Julian Assange, as well as the graphic description of Robert-François Damiens’ public execution infamously quoted in the opening passages of Michel Foucault’s 1975 book, Discipline and Punish. Organised between these two sight lines, the exhibition considers how our collective curiosity might be used to dismantle contemporary systems of power. Amid rising facist tendencies across the world White’s paintings implore us to activate democracy through vigilance and inquiry. In Vedova 2019, his salute to the Venetian anti-facsist avant-garde artist Emilio Vedova, a key figure of the WWII Italian resistance movement, ribbons of paint like root masses move searchingly across the canvas recalling Vedova’s description of all artists’ ‘eternal sense of investigation’. The same sense of communal action is felt in, Late Capitalism 2019, a dark predominantly blue and black oil and collage work made from elements of Paris metro posters, which White explains refers to France’s Gilet Jaunes movement in its insistence on the collective as opposed to the individual. L’effondrement I 2019, one of several collage works using graphic vinyl signage found on the streets of Paris, references the research of climate change experts Pablo Servigne and Raphaëlle Stevens. Their Collapsology theory proposes that the collapse of industrial civilization is imminent without urgent collective action. Unapologetically political, White’s paintings respond to the unconscionable tactics of contemporary systems of state control, which– having evolved from the spectacle of public execution–now operate on the equally (de) efficient strategies of management, regulation and surveillance. This is the world of late capitalism, a prison of sorts, where the private becomes public under the watchful eyes of the blackened windows

of the panopticon. When he was arrested and taken to London’s Belmarsh prison on the 11th of April this year, images were circulated of Julian Assange on the steps of the Ecuadorian Embassy carrying a copy of American writer Gore Vidal’s book, History of the National Security State. It concerns the historical events that led to the establishment of what Vidal termed, the massive military-industrialsecurity complex, and the political culture that gave America ‘The Imperial Presidency.’ The image brought to this writer’s mind Vidal’s 1964 novel inspired by the assassinated Emperor Julian the Apostate. In Julian, Vidal writes: “We are given our place in time as we are given our eyes: weak, strong, clear, squinting, the thing is not ours to choose.” “Well” he writes “this has been a squinting, walleyed time to be born in.” In solidarity with Assange and all others who have fought against the tyranny of anti-democratic systems, Anthony White’s work voices loudly that it is now our time–squinting and walleyed–to face the oppressive systems of power head-on. s the world celebrates 250 years since Beethoven’s birth, Chiltern Arts joins the festivities with a programme celebrating overcoming adversity in the arts, with its usual array of venues across the Chilterns, including Henley-on-Thames, Marlow, Berkhamsted, Great Missenden, Wallingford and, Princes Risborough. ‘It’s a busy year for Chiltern Arts,” says Creative Director, Naomi Taylor, “I’m particularly excited to have a theme linking all events for the first time this year. Creating a family with B P Collins
Jemimah Fleet, a solicitor specialising in surrogacy and fertility law, has joined B P Collins’ family team. We delve deeper into her work and find out why she believes reform in surrogacy laws is much needed
P
rospective parents now have the option to create a family through various options such as surrogacy, adoption, donor conception and fertility treatment. Have you seen a positive shift in people’s attitudes towards ‘modern parenting’? There is definitely a wider acceptance of the various family structures and routes to create families. Society has moved on; the ‘traditional’ family model of a heterosexual married couple living with their biological children in one home, is no longer the only conventional option. LGBT couples can now have children, be it through fertility treatment or surrogacy, and there has also been an increase in co-parenting arrangements (two or more people who are not in a relationship living in separate homes raising a child). These evolutions in creating families have been happening for some time now and it’s great they’re getting the recognition they deserve. Is there a modern parenting case that you’ve advised on that is particularly memorable? I feel very proud to have worked on modern parenting cases that have helped to change the law. There was one high profile surrogacy case, which was particularly memorable, as the high court declared the law, at that stage, to be incompatible with human rights legislation. This led to a remedial order subsequently being passed by Parliament in January 2019, allowing single parents to apply for a parental order. This

was so important as single parents of surrogate born children can now cement their legal connection to their own child and thus secure their child’s legal and family status. The Law Commission wishes to make significant changes to surrogacy law – do you welcome these? Absolutely. I have seen an increase in the number of clients who’ve sought advice on surrogacy, especially internationally, in recent years. Even though it can be hugely expensive, the lack of uptake of the surrogacy process in the UK is undoubtedly due to the obstacles and uncertain legal framework that intended parents (and surrogates) currently encounter. One key issue is that the surrogate (as the birth mother) is always considered the legal mother and intended parents can only apply to court for a parental order, to be recognised as their child’s legal parents, once the child is born. This inevitably places the child in an uncertain legal limbo until legal matters are resolved. This process can take months to finalise - a delay which is both frustrating and creates uncertainty. The Law Commission’s consultation will help to reform the law which hasn’t changed in decades and aims to ensure the child’s best interests remain the key focus and provides reassurance to all those involved on the surrogacy journey. This can only be a good thing.

Forced marriage and wardship: Assessment by the court Recent high-profile stories in the press have shone a light on the topic of forced marriages and wardship.
In the Press In May of this year it was reported that Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, youngest wife of multibillionaire and ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, had fled to Britain with their two children. They are now believed to be living in Kensington, where Princess Haya has sought protection for herself and the children from the English High Court. Sheikh Mohammed has a total of 6 wives and 23 children. Princess Haya, the sixth and youngest of the Sheikh’s wives, is reportedly the third member of his court to flee Dubai. In 2000 one of Sheikh Mohammed’s daughters, Princess Shamsa, fled from the Sheikh’s estate near Surrey. Almost two decades later, the disappearance for ten months and reappearance of another of the Sheikh’s daughters, Princess Latifa, gained significant press coverage in December 2018. Whilst the individual circumstances of Princess Haya’s case are exceptional, the specific orders that she is seeking are not unusual within family proceedings in England and Wales. Princess Haya is seeking three different types of order: a forced marriage protection order, a non-molestation order and wardship orders for the two children of the marriage.
Forced marriage and molestation orders Firstly, a forced marriage protection order protects a victim of forced marriage and can be made before or after an alleged forced marriage has taken place.
It also protects a victim from incurring punishment as a result of either refusing to enter into or taking steps to leave a forced marriage. Secondly, a non-molestation order protects victims from violence or harassment by a partner, former partner or other family member.
What is a wardship order? A wardship order places the child in question under the control of the court, and places ultimate responsibility for decision making in relation to that child with the court. Whilst the parents of the child continue to provide day-to-day care for them, the court’s consent is required for any important steps to be taken in the child’s life, such as removing them from the UK, obtaining significant medical treatment or changing the child’s educational or living arrangements. In return, Sheikh Mohammed is applying for the children to be returned to Dubai.

Assessment by the court When considering any application in relation to children, the paramount consideration of the English Court is the welfare of the children. This means that the welfare of the child should come before and above any other consideration when the court chooses whether to make an order and if so, what the terms of that order are to be. There are many things that the court will take into account when deciding this, including the wishes and feelings of the child concerned, their physical and emotional needs and any harm they have suffered or are at risk of suffering.

If you’ve ever wanted to get under the skin of a novel and ask an author all sorts of questions, then Katharine McMahon, who lived and set her books in the local area, will be talking about her new book “The Hour of Separation” with a light lunch. Come for a relaxed conversation, and the odd author confession, in the beautiful, autumnal setting of Chenies Manor. Someone you may not want to get too personal with is Dracula. We have invited Dacre Stoker, nephew and manager of the Bram Stoker Estate, and author of “Dracul” the prequel to Dracula encompassing the dramatic life of Bram Stoker himself. A
s we move into autumn there is a chill in the air and the nights are drawing in and as the leaves begin to change colour it is time to celebrate this wonderous season with its squashes and pumpkins in all shapes and sizes - now very plentiful. Be brave and experiment - most only need halving, removing the seeds and loose fibres seasoning added and a splash of oil
ready to roast to provide an alternative vegetable that is colourful and nutritious as well as delicious. At the restaurant we transform the spectacular iron bark pumpkin into a velvety soup finished with a spiced nutmeg cream but equally delicious here to be transformed into a ravioli made with fresh handmade pasta and finished with an aromatic butter.
RECIPE: Ravioli of Pumpkin with a Sage Beurre Noisette Ingredients Serves 4 Pasta • 275 g pasta flour • 6 egg yolks • 4 whole free-range eggs • 1 tblsp olive oil • 1 tblsp Maldon salt
Ravioli Filling • 1 medium sized pumpkin • 1 garlic clove finely chopped • 1 bunch of thyme de sprigged and chopped • Olive oil for roasted • 1 shallot finely diced • A little butter
Method Pasta Dough 1. Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl 2. Turn out onto a floured surface 3. Knead by hand for 10 minutes 4. Rest the dough for 30 minutes in the refrigerator 5. Divide the pasta dough into four. Run the pasta through the machine in sections until desired thickness achieved Ravioli Filling 1. Cut the pumpkin into even sized wedges and remove seeds 2. Score the flesh and roast in a hot oven with the olive oil, garlic and thyme season with salt and freshly ground pepper, until soft and slightly caramelized 3. Once roasted remove the skin 4. Using a sharp knife chop into a rough puree 5. Sauté the fine diced shallots in the butter and add to the pumpkin puree 6. Cool until just warm and then add the cream and parmesan to blend. Check seasoning 7. Leave to cool
place on top 5. Gently cup around with your hands to form individual portions 6. Then using 3 ascending size round cutters place the smallest and the next size up inside of each other and press upside down on to the pasta portions - this will form a neat little edge to the ravioli 7. Then with the largest cutter put the right way up and use to cut out the rounds to finish 8. Place onto a floured tray 9. Rest the ravioli in a refrigerator for 30 minutes To serve 1. Cook the ravioli in boiling salted water with a splash of olive oil for around 4 minutes 2. Remove with a slotted spoon – plate up into a large warm bowl 3. Meanwhile in a hot pan add your diced salted butter 4. Wait until it foams and colours nut brown 5. Add the chopped sage 6. Spoon a little of the beurre noisette over the ravioli to finish and serve

t’s back - the legendary annual Big Bang, Little Bang Fireworks and Bonfire spectacular at Beaconsfield Cricket Club is set to light up the town on 2nd November. The award-winning pyrotechnic team at Titanium will be returning with another dazzling display, set to a spectacular custom soundtrack designed to delight the Beaconsfield crowds. Titanium Fireworks have a well-deserved reputation for delivering stunning pyro-musical displays and are responsible for the design of the two largest displays in the country, London’s New Year’s Eve celebrations and Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, so, if you haven’t been to this event before, prepare to be impressed. The Science behind Toothpaste It’s all about the Toothpaste. Toothpaste is only a means to an end. If you buy it and then are lazy about brushing your teeth, it won’t help! Should I use a Fluoride toothpaste? Yes, yes and yes! Fluoride helps to strengthen and protect teeth, which can reduce tooth decay in adults and children. Whichever brand, it helps to understand the basic components of each product. Most major brands of toothpaste include abrasive agents. Don’t worry about that label, though. Abrasive agents are usually helpful. Abrasive agents are the ingredients that cause the scratchy sensation when you brush your teeth. They’re silicates like hydrated silica, calcium carbonate, and hydrated alumina. Some of these materials are the same as sand, which sounds weird, but the ingredients have a purpose. In combination with the brushing movement of your wrist, they’ll scrub away the bacteria and plaque. Conversely, the brushing motion wouldn’t sanitize your teeth without the silicates. Their purpose is to act as a cleaning agent. The foam on your toothbrush comes from the detergent in the toothpaste. It works similarly to the products you use to clean your dishes and laundry. A detergent breaks down any undesirable substances. With your teeth, it’s loosening materials that aren’t soluble. The liquid in your mouth will dissolve any that is soluble, but you need help with anything that doesn’t respond to liquids.
The importance of fluoride. Any good toothpaste will include other components to make it more effective. Fluoride is the most important one. In fact, it’s the primary reason tooth decay and cavities have declined dramatically over the past 50 years. This naturally occurring mineral protects your teeth when you eat. Every food you consume leaves trace elements of sugar and starch on your teeth. Fluoride counters this problem in two ways. It strengthens tooth enamel, the protective layer on the outside of your teeth, and that added strength makes your teeth less susceptible to chipping and cracking.

When you eat and drink sweet and acidic items, this can weaken the outer enamel. Fluoride counters this issue. Fluoride also fights off previous damage by reversing the process of early tooth decay. For these two reasons, when you shop for toothpaste, you should pick one with fluoride. Many toothpastes will also include artificial sweeteners. The minty taste that you associate with toothpaste isn’t a natural flavour. Manufacturers add saccharin and other ingredients to make the taste of toothpaste better. Without it, the process of brushing your teeth wouldn’t feel as pleasant. If brushing your teeth left you with a bad taste in your mouth, it might reduce your desire to brush regularly. Toothpaste also includes ingredients to keep the tube from drying out. Without the moisture retention of humectants, your mouth would dry too soon. These are the same ingredients that keep you from having dry skin. Finally, toothpaste uses thickeners to make sure that the actual substance maintains a gooey form.
So which one is best? Now that you know the key components of toothpaste, you can pick the brand that’s right for you. If you’re a smoker or coffee drinker, you should choose a product with the highest amount of fluoride. If you’re someone with yellow teeth, you’ll want a brand with a higher number of silicates. A product that includes whitening can help reduce staining and brighten yellow teeth. If cavities are a big issue, you want a product with special cavity-fighting power. If you have a plaque problem, you can prevent tartar build-up with toothpastes that are specifically formulated to fight tartar. Finally, if you have sensitive gums and/or teeth, the best product is one that treats the underlying problem of sensitivity. As you can see, toothpaste includes a lot of components specifically designed to protect and improve your teeth. No matter the problem you worry about with your teeth, a product exists that can help you overcome the issue. Simply consider your needs and then mix and match from the options above. What is Hip Impingement and will I get Hip Arthritis if I have it?
Mr Rishi Chana FRCS Orth What is hip impingement? The hip joint is a natural ball and socket joint, lined by a seal called the labrum (lip). The femoral head is the ball and the acetabulum is the socket: a perfect sphere spinning in a half cup. Hip impingement is when the ball or the socket are not perfectly round but more egg shaped or oblong. This causes jarring and injury due to the shape mis-match. Why does this occur? As we grow, the growth plate reacts to stress and lays extra bone. This stress causes the round femoral head to become more egg shaped (a bump or cam lesion). The socket can become oblong and this is called a pincer lesion. How common is this? 1 in 20 people are affected but most people do not know it due to minor changes. Men and women can have hip impingement, men tend to have bumps and ladies have socket changes. When does it present and what does it feel like? Two peaks occur: Mid-twenties when we are very active, or in our mid-forties when late damage starts to occur. The main symptom is mixed pain, a dull toothache pain during or after the activity and a sharp pain within the front and outside groin/pelvis areas, sometimes with a click or stiffness. Pain can be caused by deep flexion and rotation movement; putting on shoes or socks, getting in and out of a car, many sports and fitness activities can also cause this if the level of activity crosses a threshold where damage starts to occur and the pain starts. Even sitting or driving for a long time. Runners, cyclists, triathletes or even crossfit enthusiasts are particularly at risk due to the nature of extreme range of motion and repetitive higher impact action forces that the joint is put through. 9 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 9
People taking part on regular walking, sports and fitness activities who have injuries are also found to have core gluteal muscular weakness and trochanteric bursitis that is underestimated. If get the pain, what should I do? A consultation with a health expert is advised. An early professional holistic assessment will lead to a timely diagnosis and treatment to get you back on your feet and returned to full activity sooner. What are the treatment options? Can the failing hip joint be saved: bridging the early arthritis gap? Getting the correct diagnosis is the key. The earlier the condition is treated the better. If this is left untreated, it can progress to early onset osteo-arthritis and may lead to needing a total hip replacement. Once you see an expert, they will do an xray and mri scan to confirm the condition. Physiotherapy does help but if the bone is abnormally shaped, then keyhole surgery to shave it off and repair any cartilage damage to the hip joint are recommended. Newer treatments are now available to repair the cartilage and save the natural hip joint which also allow a faster recovery of a few weeks rather than months. This is called Biological Reconstruction Hip arthroscopy and has shown great results for pain relief and returning to function of 96-99%. Figure of the Hip, showing the Pincer and Cam. Physiotherapy does improve patients to 66% function but surgery (Biological Reconstruction of the Natural Joint by keyhole access) allows 99% return to function.

Tom Layzell senior designer at John Lewis of Hungerford’s, Beaconsfield showroom answers some key questions about kitchen design. What are the key things to consider when thinking about designing a new kitchen? Clients should consider whether this will be their “forever home” or just one for the next couple of years as this can influence how much is spend on the kitchen, as well as style choices. They may opt for a more neutral and universally appealing layout if they are not going to be in the property long-term. Space-wise, things to consider are what function the room as a whole performs. Is it just a kitchen? Does room for dining need to be considered? Will there be a social space, e.g. sofa and TV area. Will there be a separate utility area or does this need to be incorporated into the kitchen? If so, then this space needs to be slightly separate from the kitchen area to reduce mess and taking up valuable kitchen space with laundry items. When considering the new space, it is good to reflect on their current or past kitchens for both positive and negative factors. Often what didn’t work in a previous kitchen (lack of storage/prep space etc.) can have a strong bearing on what to include or not include in the new space. How can you put your own personal stamp on your kitchen? Colour choice is key and can make the difference between two similar style kitchens looking completely different. style. In these instances, colour choice and the distribution of colour in the kitchen can make each kitchen look extremely different and unique to each client.
