The book, which features over 65 recipes to suit all appetites, has been created so that you can create at home dishes which guests at Stoke Park have been raving about for years. e never know what each day will bring’ - commented Frances Noble, Associate Director and Head of Jewellery Department at Dix Noonan Webb, specialist Mayfair auctioneers. ‘I love the pieces that require further research and the opportunity to learn something new. A few weeks ago, a beautiful French floral diamond spray brooch, circa 1880s, was brought in for sale, contained in it’s original maroon leather and gilt tooled fitted case, the brooch still with the original range of fittings that would enabled the piece to be worn in numerous ways. The leather case even contained the designer’s original hand drawn pen and ink sketches”. “The diamond brooch is mounted ‘en tremblant’,” continued Frances, “a technique where each flowerhead is held on a spiral spring, making them ‘tremble’ when worn, as if to simulate flowers ‘dancing in the breeze’. The brooch was made by a little known Parisian jewel house, Debacq & Cie. Not a name that is familiar to many, indeed I can’t remember ever handling a piece by this particular maker. So it was a delight to learn more about this

jewel house”. Debacq Jewellers first opened its doors for business in Paris in 1812, manufacturing and trading in gold jewellery. By its heyday, the 1860s-80s, the company, based at 40, Rue Réaumur, was employing twelve diamond polishers alongside the jewellery workshops and sales offices, and specialised in exquisite diamond floral brooches and large corsage sprays, made as convertible jewels that could be changed to suit the occasion, and worn as brooches, hair decorations, bangles, pendants etc. This beautiful brooch was included in the 4th September Jewellery auction in Dix Noonan Webb’s Mayfair auction rooms and sold for £5000. Dix Noonan Webb hold monthly events in Berkhamsted and will be returning to Berkhamsted Town Hall for their next Jewellery Valuation Day, on Thursday 11th October between 10am-2pm, where specialists will be available to offer free and confidential valuations, with a view to possible sale in their Mayfair auction rooms (consigning now for the Christmas auctions). ast year, this hugely popular event drew a crowd of over 6,000 locals and, with this year’s partnership with the Wycombe Swan’s Snow White panto and the support of some big local companies, this year is set to be the best yet. Said club Chairman, Graham Daniel, “The Cricket Club Fireworks Display is a much-anticipated event in Beaconsfield’s social calendar and we take great pride in delivering a fantastic night for families from the town itself and from the surrounding villages. Not only is it a great event, but the money raised enables us to support sport, health and local schools in the area”. Visitors to Beaconsfield Cricket Club’s ‘Big Bang, Little Bang’ event will be treated to some stellar musical performances from members of the cast of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs which will be showing at the Wycombe Swan in December. Snow White (actress Naomi Crowe) and panto dame, Nurse Nancy, ( Jason Sutton, aka Miss Jason) will also be on hand to help light the bonfire and will be mingling with the crowds throughout the evening. This year will see the return of the ‘Little Bang’ a shorter, quieter, earlier display for very young children that won’t interfere with bedtime. Gates

open at 5pm, so there will be plenty of time to enjoy the on-stage entertainment, funfair and stalls before the firework display at 5.45pm. What’s the difference between A levels and IB Diploma?

ou could consider A levels a 20th century qualification, and the IB Diploma a qualification for the 21st century. Andreas Schleicher, Director of Education and Skills at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said: “The world no longer rewards people for what they know – Google knows everything – but for what they can do with what they know.” While I disagree with the implication that people don’t need to know things, there is little doubt that the application of knowledge is becoming ever more important and it is in this that the IB Diploma is different from A levels. Both the IB Diploma and A levels involve studying three subjects in depth. A top grade at A Level and a top grade in an individual IB Diploma Higher Level subject are each worth 56 UCAS tariff points. The difference with the IB Diploma is that these three subjects are just one part of a qualification which teaches you how to develop an inquiring mind and apply your knowledge to the world around you. An A level and IB Diploma exam question will probably look similar on paper. In both you will be assessed on how much knowledge you have retained, whether you understand key concepts and whether you can apply standard methods. But the IB assessment will also be gauging whether you are skilled in analysing and presenting 2 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8

information; whether you can evaluate and construct arguments and solve problems creatively. The IB Diploma also involves completing an Extended Essay and a course in the Theory of Knowledge. Three subjects at ‘Standard Level’ also have to be completed, plus Creativity, Action and Service, which must involve some combination of sport, art or community service. You can see that the IB Diploma is an ‘all round’ or holistic qualification, well suited to our multicultural, fast paced, digital 21st century lives. A good IB school (and of course I think that at ACS Hillingdon International School fits that description), will teach time management and study skills to help students complete their Diploma, and not surprisingly universities award the qualification a much higher tariff overall than three A levels. Online and DIY wills
Are they really a cheaper alternative? Creating a will is a sensible way for people to control what happens to their estate when they pass away. And while it’s tempting to choose a DIY or online will for less than £30, it can be a dicey approach because if mistakes are made or if the strict witnessing rules are not followed correctly, the document could become unenforceable. Thomas Bird, solicitor at B P Collins, advises on what to watch out for.
DIY It’s easy to make mistakes when creating your own DIY or online will as its execution can be interpreted in several ways. For example, many people fail to secure two witnesses and if they do, some appoint a beneficiary, a minor or ask them to sign at different times – all of which makes the will invalid. Other errors include misspelled names and failure to sign the document. These problems cannot be easily remedied once the person who created the will passes away, so it’s better to seek expert advice to ensure that correct procedures are followed and the will remains effective.
Change in circumstances Problems can also arise if your circumstances change, as many DIY wills cannot accommodate this. With increasingly complex family structures, particularly with the divorce rate continuing to rise and more people having second families – huge life changes are becoming ever more likely. Some handwritten notes on the original will to highlight your new decisions will not suffice. Or what if you left everything to your wife in your basic will, but she has passed away and your will isn’t updated? Your wishes will become invalid and when you pass away, intestacy rules will then apply which may not be to your liking.
Have you thought of everything? You may feel that you’re the only person who knows your life better than anyone else and that you’ve thought everything through before creating 2 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 8
your DIY will. But there may be situations that you’ve not considered that could impact on your estate. This is why it’s useful to seek independent, expert advice. Solicitors have the expertise to challenge your rationale and encourage you to consider other scenarios beyond your current circumstances. With all options considered, your will should remain binding despite any changes that come your way.

Twenty pieces of art from this July’s Windsor and Eton En Plein Air painting competition staged in Windsor Castle, including the winning piece by Wendy Kimberley from Norfolk, will be displayed at the fair. Wendy’s work will be accepted on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen into her private collection by Sir James Perowne KBE, Governor of Windsor Castle at the Private View on Friday 9th November. he prestigious Tring Park School for the Performing Arts is hosting two dedicated day-long workshop for boys with a passion for performing arts and dance in November and December. The first workshop, for students aged 11-16, will take place on 9 November from 10am to 4pm and will give boys the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a performing arts student. Boys keen to attend this workshop will have the chance to enjoy lessons in acting, musical theatre and commercial music alongside current boys from Tring Park School The second Life in a Day workshop is being held on 7 December and will focus solely on dance and will cater for boys aged 10-16. During the day, students will take part in a dance technique class, get some tips on how to get the most out of auditions as well as observe a masterclass by world-class teachers. At both workshops, teachers will be on hand to shed some light on what life is like for a boy with a passion for performing arts and dance studying at Tring Park School. As well as having the taster sessions, boys attending the workshops will get the chance to hear about how the day is structured and the balance between academic and performing arts classes. Currently, there are a number of ex-Tring Park students performing in Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, including Will Bozier and Max Westwell, while former Tring Park School boy Ned Porteous has had a lot to shout about this year after he made the shortlist for Most Popular Newcomer in the National Television Awards for his role as Joseph Tate in Emmerdale. Ex-student Zach Wyatt has landed his first professional role alongside Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams in the UK premiere of Lauren Gunderson’s I and You, at the Hampstead Theatre later this autumn. In the world of musical theatre, Kit Esuruoso has been starring as Craig Turner in the original cast of West End hit show Tina the Musical. Kit will also be starring in a new film called Akoni. And of course, there’s not forgetting, the incredible Kaine Ward, who is one of six boys from Tring Park School who have played the lead role of Billy Elliot in the smash-hit West End musical and UK tour. Kaine attended Tring Park from the age of 10 and graduated from the school last year to follow his dancer’s dream to New York City where he was one of just 24 dancers selected worldwide to attend the world-famous Juilliard School of Performing Arts, whose alumni include Robin Williams, Christopher Reeve and Val Kilmer. Crypto Divorce What to do if you think your spouse is hiding Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies from you
From Bitcoin to Ethereum, managing the division of cryptocurrencies in a divorce is understandably very complicated – and even more so if you think your spouse may be hiding their digital assets from you. Vandana Chitroda and Emma McMorrow from the Family Law team at Royds Withy King answer some of the most frequently asked questions involving cryptocurrencies in divorce.
Is it legal for my partner to hide Bitcoins and other digital currencies from me in our divorce? Parties have a duty to provide full and frank financial disclosure during a divorce. Unfortunately, it is not unheard of for some parties to attempt to hide their assets from their respective spouses and cryptocurrencies may make this process easier. Whilst cryptocurrencies and the blockchains they use are not an entirely anonymous system, they are unregulated and the identity of the user is hard to trace. There is no doubt that it is ‘easier’ for someone to hide the existence, or the value of their cryptocurrency assets from their husband or wife in divorce. This does not mean however that you are powerless to challenge their existence and value. I’m certain my partner is hiding Bitcoins from me, but what can I do? Attempting to hide any assets during a divorce is risky and can result in the non-disclosing party being in contempt of court and liable to costs penalties. Even without concrete evidence of cryptocurrency assets a Judge could make inferences as to their existence and potential value and factor this in to their overall judgement and related financial orders. For example, one potential outcome would be one spouse being awarded all the ‘copper-bottomed’ assets (which typically include a house, cash in the bank, pensions and other investments) and the non-disclosing spouse being left with the risk-laden or non-disclosed (but inferred) assets (such as a Bitcoin holding). What can the Courts do about it? The rapid rise in the popularity of Bitcoin since its creation in 2009 and the wealth it has generated, means that digital currencies are likely to become

a frequent and significant feature in modern day divorces, notwithstanding their volatility and elusive nature. The English divorce courts retain extensive powers to order full disclosure and penalise nondisclosure. Those powers will be tested in the Bitcoin era but in essence cryptocurrencies will be just another class of asset to be divided between the parties in a divorce. n the 2014 annual budget the chancellor introduced dramatic new rules concerning access to pension funds. These new pension freedoms allow far greater flexibility to individuals in retirement but for some the options only complicate things. ‘Art full’ life for Amersham T
he creativity was bursting at the seams at last month’s Amersham Heritage Day as ARTLIFE Studio let the imagination of young artists flow through “Web wool” and Animal Art works. Creative founder Sarah Thomas tells us about the day and the importance of encouraging creativity in our children. Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain and artist once he is grown up.” I have come to recognise the importance and benefits of “maintaining creativity” in children and young adults, this was one of the core principles that ignited my passion to found ARTLIFE Studio. I have been on a mission of understanding how to teach children art, tapping into children’s creative needs and exploratory desires, since becoming a mother to twin boys in 2010. This combined with my 23 year’s experience as a lecturer at one of the UK’s top Art foundation courses, has led me to the conclusion that we need to find a way to teach children how to become leaders in their own learning. This is an essential skill that gives the student the space to learn through their own discovery, learning from mistakes, developing resilience and creativity along the way. For us at ARTLIFE studio, it is the process, not the end result, that is fundamental to the understanding of experiencing what it is to produce “Art”. Our Amersham Heritage Day Artlife launch with “web wool” was a perfect example of this. By allowing young children the space to the develop and explore ideas of structure, form and colour by weaving wool in amongst trees and other freestanding sculptures: we collectively created a huge interactive sculpture that developed right in front of eyes throughout the day. It was wonderful

to watch as the children became a part of their own organic “living art”. This was also accompanied by a competition that required the children to draw their favourite animals. With over 200 artworks submitted that day it is clear that the diversity and level of creative skill in our children is truly exceptional. It is a comforting thought that in a world that is starting to and will eventually be driven by AI “Real creative” thinking and imagination from our younger generations is something highly valued, intangible and still hard to computerise. Artlife Studio was designed to nurture this natural creativity within children in a fun and exciting way with age groups ranging from 4 -18 years. We use workshop classes with strong emphasis placed on experimental approaches across all disciplines of the Arts - covering painting, drawing, sculpture, printing and importantly studies into Artists in these associated fields. Exercises are set that place children in the perspective of the artist as well as themselves. The first course will include a lesson that will explore how Michelangelo painted the roof of the Sistine Chapel, and exercise designed to encourage the young artists to consider and see how it feels to draw from an alternative perspective, such as lying on your back. All materials and tools are provided (except the Sistine Chapel) including a sketchbook to allow the children to record their own creative process and add ideas as they occur to them, in as well as outside the studio. n Thursday 27 September, Watford celebrated the opening of Debenhams, starting the first phase of the development openings at intu Watford. The shopping centre put on a weekend-long celebration party throughout the mall, including a beauty, fashion and food zone, free for shoppers to enjoy, plus entertainment that saw a flashmob appearance from the sensational Rock Choir. ow is the time to eat this unusual vegetable (our namesake) which is related to the sun flower and grows well in our cold climate. They first came to our shores from North America in the early 17th century via Holland. The roots should be scrubbed clean but not peeled so as to preserve
flavour and colour. For a lighter finish and more theatrical presentation we serve this soup from a cream whipping gun and garnish with a hazelnut cream, artichoke crisps and toasted hazelnuts. High in iron these wonderful tubers have a great nutty rich taste and lend themselves to a warming autumnal soup.
RECIPE: Jerusalem Artichoke Soup Soup • 1kg Jerusalem artichokes - washed • 1 clove of garlic chopped • 3 sticks of celery – medium chopped • 1 onion – peeled and medium chopped • 1 medium floury potato • 2 litres chicken or vegetable stock – warmed
• 300 ml warmed double cream • 50 g salted butter • Salt and freshly ground pepper To Garnish • Artichoke crisps • 25g toasted hazelnuts

Method 1. Scrub the artichokes and then chop into small pieces. 2. Sweat in a hot pan with a little butter and oil with the chopped onion garlic and celery. 3. Add stock and chopped potato, cook until just soft. 4. Liquidise in a blender with the warmed cream. Season to taste. 5. Pass through a sieve and then your soup is ready to serve – pour into warmed bowls. 6. Garnish with toasted hazelnuts and artichoke crisps.

Little Inspirations Allow me to “Re-Introduce” myself, I’m a local Mum with a background in fashion publishing and music. Now I’m embarking on a new adventure, my Interior and design business. I have grown up in Gerrards Cross and seen our area change over the last 30 years. I’ve also had the privilege of reading and watching Life Magazines grow into established local go-to magazines for our area, now I am honoured to be able to write for them too. I hope you enjoy reading my article.

ow, what a weekend it has been. I attended the 100%Design show, just one of the many design shows that made up the Design Festival this month. It was truly awe inspiring. Everything from laser cut metal work, beautifully designed garden furniture (which I need to have in my garden!) there was even hand carved Tudor and Gothic doors with stone masonry thrown in for good measure, truly a dying art form (keep it up Jack Badger). My Illustrations tutor always said that styling came naturally to me and I should consider becoming a stylist. Funny how things pan out, because that is what I did. Be it styling for a magazine, music videos, luxury homes or engineering something from scratch, I can’t get enough of it. I find inspiration in all of it. However, I don’t follow a trend, I like to see what sits right with me. Do I get engulfed in it or does it pinch like a new pair of killer heels that you have to have, even though they are half a size too small? Design for me, which ever media it maybe is all about the end user. There are no words to describe or limit my work - be it fashion or interiors; just a feeling or a photographic image in my case. That image has to tell the whole story in a glimpse of an eye. I like to put myself into my client’s life, how do they cook? What routines do they have? Have they got children? What kind of music do they listen to? What books do they read? Where would they go on holiday? What do they want to achieve and create with me? Creating a space to rest your soul in after a long day or week is always on the top of my list. Friends have commented on my home, saying how clam and serene you feel when you walk in and how its like a big hug; and I give good hugs. I’m always on the look out for new and wonderful products and if I can’t find it, I’ll get it engineered bespoke. Imagery- My own photographic work gives me inspiration and I have produced some of my own work for the show homes I’ve worked on. One
client even requested me to sign my image for them, which I took as a compliment. Symmetry- Which for me personally I LOVE in garden design oh, and architecture planting too. Simplicity- Sometimes less is more. Keeping the same tonal colour running throughout your home with tonal accents to off set it creates seamless continuity and flow. Luxury- Well, every girl needs a little bit of Luxury! And I’m defiantly one of those girls. For me luxury can be anything from a beautiful blanket, a wonderfully scented candle, accents of velvet, wool or silk or even a rug. Detail- I’m a stickler for attention to detail, another thing my tutors all noticed about me. Never forget the small things. They can truly make the difference between outstanding or ok. I do also love mixing it up a little now and then. The dappled light you get from sitting under the tree in the afternoon. The way a cotton voile moves in the gentle breeze. The juxtaposition of materials you wouldn’t think go together, but sit perfectly in harmony. The inviting feeling of an open roaring fire with your cosy slippers and the shadows cast by chandeliers and lamps. Somewhere in amongst all of this you just don’t want to leave because, you connect with it, you feel it. Design shouldn’t be serious, all those uber clean lines and wondering if you can sit on the sofa in fear of crinkling it. Design should allow you to connect and feel it in some form or another. I mean what would be the point of an exceptionally designed house if you couldn’t feel like it was home. Thanking you for allowing me to share. STOP, LOOK, BREATHE. BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH: OCTOBER One out of eight us will be diagnosed with breast cancer, so this month (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) we ask Your Doctor’s Dr Riccardo Di Cuffa questions about this disease that all women should know the answers to.
Q. What are the best ways to protect yourself from getting breast cancer? A: If you limit your alcohol consumption, avoid smoking, exercise regularly, eat healthily to control your weight and reduce your stress levels then you will be hugely helping your chances of staying breast cancer free. However, in many cases breast cancer can be hereditary, or completely random and there is nothing you can do to prevent it. There is so much research into breast cancer and we hope there will be a cure and clear prevention in the next few years. Q. Is there only one sort of breast cancer? A: There are many types of breast cancer and different areas of your breast can be affected. Some types are caused by hormones or proteins, some are purely genetic. There are also different types, stages and grades. Your outcomes are also dependent on whether the breast cancer has spread beyond the breast. The good news is that through enormous breakthroughs in research women are now far more likely to survive breast cancer. Men can also get breast cancer. Q. Does HRT cause breast cancer? A: Evidence that Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) does very slightly increase the likelihood of getting breast cancer is strong, and the longer you are taking it, the greater your risk. However, once you have stopped taking it for a year or two, your likelihood of getting breast cancer reduces greatly and is similar to if you had never taken it. Also bear in mind that the increased cancer risk with HRT is small compared to other risk factors such as being overweight or smoking, and HRT is responsible for

only a small proportion of cancer cases. Q. What is the best way to do a breast check and how often should I do it? A: Look at your breasts in the mirror, once with your arms by your side and then with them raised. Gently feel each breast and armpit and up to your collar bone. It is important to know what your breasts look like normally as it is natural to have asymmetrical small lumps on your breast and some women’s breasts are lumpier than others. It is recommended you do a breast check about once a month. Check for lumps, dimpling, puckering, swelling, redness, soreness, or a rash and any changes to your nipple. If you are concerned about any abnormality, visit your GP. Q. Are mammograms painful and what age should I be to have one? A: A mammogram is when your breast is placed under a plastic paddle that gently compresses it, and it only lasting a few seconds. Some people find it uncomfortable because of the pressure but it is rarely painful. Women over 45 years old should have a mammogram every three years on the NHS but you can also pay privately to have them annually if you want. Q. How often should I go to my GP for a breast check? A: Women in England aged between 50 and 70, who are registered with a GP are automatically entitled to a screening every three years. Your GP will invite you to the screening, so you don’t need to organise it but always continue to check your breasts at home on a monthly basis. 0330 088 2020. www.your-doctor.co.uk

RESTYLE & REFRESH Who are Willox Interiors? We are an Interior Design Company based in Amersham and we work with clients on projects that range from redesigning their entire home décor to helping others with choosing paint and wallpaper for a single room.
Knowing that you are looking for a restyle of a room is great, knowing where to start can sometimes be quite daunting. We speak to Interior Designer Sasha Willox (Willox Interiors in Amersham) who explains how the process works, and how they can help you to achieve your dream look for your home.
How do you help your clients? There is often quite a difference between the way that we would like to live and the way that we actually do. For us it’s all about understanding our clients dreams and making them a reality within the realms of functionality. A client may have seen a gorgeous image of a house with cream carpets throughout but if she has 3 boys and a dog it’s about finding ways of creating that style whilst still allowing her family to enjoy the space. What seems to be your most popular type of project at the moment? Extensions, extensions, extensions. A lot of our clients are deciding to stay where they are rather than move and incur the cost of stamp duty, solicitor’s fees, moving costs etc and so they decide to put that money into their current properties by enlarging them. Before we even start thinking about how to create a gorgeous space for them we look at the functionality of the house - seeing how it flows. We try to help clients look at how they use their homes and to make the most of each room. Some rooms might only be used for a handful of days a year so we look to see if there might be a better way for their potential to be maximised. What is your ethos? Our homes are often a reflection of our lives and the trick is being able to create a space that allows for a fab new sofa, gorgeous wallpaper and dazzling new mirror but at the same time allows for the kid’s drawings that they’ve brought home from school or some tribal souvenir that you got on your honeymoon. My role as an Interior Designer is to bring all

these things together and that is why I believe it’s so important to get to know your clients and to listen to the way they use their homes as well as their aspirations and dreams. How do you start a project? Initially we like to get together with a prospective client over a cup of coffee (or glass of wine) and just have a chat about what works or doesn’t work for them in their home, what rooms they want to change, how they and their family use the house, what thoughts they’ve had on design etc. We then go away and come back with a proposal. This will include initial rough design thoughts together with an estimation on how many hours we think the project will take, time lines and a fee proposal. And what would you say is a must in a room? For me its colour and texture. Now I’m not saying that you should paint all walls orange and lime green but the idea is to create a mellow background with pops of colour here and there. You might have to wear a grey suit every day to work but you’ll probably put on a bright scarf or a bit of jewellery to jazz it up and to reflect your personality. We need to do the same with rooms. Now I’m a big fan of grey but it’s important to incorporate a shot of colour on a cushion, or in a painting to bring depth and interest into the room. Equally textures need to be balanced. Mix deep and soft fabrics with crisper, sharper textures. Rooms should work on a range of our senses. Is there anything that you would put into Room 101? Ooh I do have a couple of things but I think top of the list is cushions on a sofa or bed that aren’t full. Nothing looks sadder than a limp saggy cushion. The inside really needs to be feather so that you can plump it up and get air into it. You just can’t do that with polyester. www.willoxinteriors.com
