HIDDEN TREASURES W
ithout doubt, there are many thousands of valuable and sought-after stamps hidden half forgotten in homes around Britain. Whether they are in albums, on postcards or even on old envelopes, now is the time to rediscover them and find out what they are truly worth. Paul Mathews, a trusted valuer and describer with over 40 years experience working for famous dealers Stanley Gibbons (Great Britain Specialist Department and Managing their General Buying Department) and world-renown auctioneers Spink (General Valuer and Describer), is offering free assessments and advice on readers’ stamp collections. From his years in the business, Paul knows that many people put off getting a valuation because they are uncertain about the best way forward or are worried about possible fees. This apprehension is often what leads to beautiful albums being boxed up in a garage or outbuilding at potential risk to their condition and value. Another reason why treasures are sadly neglected is that a large number of stamp owners have inherited collections and are unsure whether their relatives simply had an interesting hobby or were making a shrewd investment. Paul comes from a long line of collectors and will often view the cherished childhood albums with as much enthusiasm as the specialised properties. The increasing popularity of postal history means that anyone who has kept old
1 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
correspondence, especially if envelopes have their original letters perhaps with unusual contents or signatures, may have something a collector would be keen to buy. Postcards, both used and unused, from the late 19th or early 20th century can command high sums with the more popular examples at the moment being real photographic and topographical. Valuing requires an extensive knowledge and there is no substitute for years of scrutinising collections and undertaking research on values and understanding condition. Paul’s specialism is Great Britain and Empire but he has a strong overall knowledge and puts it to good use. He is delighted when he spots a hidden gem to put a smile on a clients’ face. It’s one of the nicest parts of a valuer’s job. Paul is a member of the Royal Philatelic Society of London (RPSL) and attends many of their meetings. Over the years he has travelled extensively around the country running valuation days and has attended exhibitions in the UK and overseas. This has brought Paul into contact with a great many people in the collecting and dealing fraternity and he can utilise that network to help secure the best price for anyone wishing to sell. Paul’s advice will be extremely useful in helping to decide whether direct sale, private treaty or auction is the best option for a smooth sale. In addition to general valuations, Paul can also undertake valuations for probate although there will be a small charge for this service.
THE DETAILS To make an enquiry about a noobligation honest valuation, simply contact Paul by email (pmstamps@btinternet.com) or telephone (07852 409064). He is happy to travel to view a collection in situ or at a mutually convenient location.

Introducing Buckinghamshire’s first Independent Grammar School We take great pleasure in announcing the launch of The Chalfonts Independent Grammar School.
S
ituated in the Chiltern Hills in Newland Park, a stone’s throw from Chalfont St Giles, The Chalfonts Independent Grammar School combines the academic rigour of a traditional Buckinghamshire grammar school with a thoroughly modern and innovative approach. The Chalfonts tackles the persistent perception that should you not enter one of the traditional Buckinghamshire Grammar schools, your path is necessarily set towards a less academic, less highachieving secondary school or a single sex private education cast in a similar mould. Every aspect of life at The Chalfonts, from the curriculum through to the learning spaces, has been meticulously considered to offer a cutting edge, 21st Century education. Rather than row upon row of desks, they use the Harkness method – a single boardroom table seating our maximum number of fourteen

students per class. Rather than single sex, they are co-educational; an establishment where young men and women flourish together; and rather than prohibiting modern technology in class, they embrace it – with an innovative technological approach they call the ‘Five Surfaces’. Director, Ali Khan is the former Headmaster of Crown House School in High Wycombe and Griffin House School in Little Kimble: “Crown House and Griffin House continue to provide outstanding primary education, regularly achieving some of the best results in Buckinghamshire. Their pupils usually progress to a single-sex, traditional Grammar school. My involvement with The Chalfonts began with a visit, which entirely captured my imagination and I am delighted to be heavily involved with what I regard as a serious and significant alternative to the ‘normal routes’ of secondary education in Buckinghamshire.” Principal, David Shandley recognises that: “When people visit The Chalfonts, they immediately see the difference and intuitively understand the advantages gained by organising our spaces in this fashion. We are receiving a great deal of attention from parents who like our progressive approach to learning and our central determination to shape the leaders of the future.” www.thechalfontsgrammar.co.uk

25 years
How long have you been at Wycombe Swan? Just over 4 ½ years now What do you like best about the theatre? I love the fact that it has it’s own individuality. Being part of a group there is always a danger that the personality of the theatre can be lost however, the Wycombe Swan has a timeless character that has seen it through 25 years and with a few cosmetic changes that I would like to implement, will continue to bring in the local crowds for many years to come. How do you think Wycombe Swan contributes to the community? The Swan is used for a host of local events as well as the big shows. Local dance schools use the theatre, groups use us on a regular basis and whist we offer pre-show dining we obviously can’t accommodate everyone and thus our guests will often use local restaurants and bars pre show. All of this is good for the local area. How do you plan for the shows that you are bringing in? It is my role to keep abreast of what is due to tour, successful on tour and to work out what I believe will be received well by our audiences. I make sure I know what is due to finish in the West End and start touring, and I work to ensure that we don’t duplicate shows with our local theatres also. I like to bring an array of shows to our stage. There are always the classics that go down a storm like Mathew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty, and the big musicals like Sister Act.

THE BUTCHER’S TAP
Chef Tom Kerridge brings life back to the high street with the opening of The Butcher’s Tap in Marlow, November 2017.
F
or centuries, pubs have been the beating heart of the community up and down the country. High streets were buzzing with bakeries, grocery stores, fishmongers and butchers. As the high street has changed over time with the rise of the internet, shops and pubs have had to be innovative to continue welcoming people through the doors. Britain’s most well-known publican and two Michelin-starred chef, Tom Kerridge, wants to bring the humble high street alive again. The Butcher’s Tap will open this November and will combine a butchers and public house into one. It will fully function as a butchers and bar during the day, then from 5pm the space will operate with a simple meat-led food offering while remaining truly a pub, with beers on tap, wines and spirits, and community nights. Tom is partnering with friend and butcher Andy Cook and Greene King. Andy Cook helps
2 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
build an understanding of quality products and has been providing The Hand and Flowers with first class produce for nearly 10 years. Andy brings with him extensive knowledge in his trade, a warm and personable character and of course top quality meat sourced from expert, trusted suppliers. This project marks the first of Greene King’s joint venture concepts, an innovative new programme for its Pub Partners division that will see the pub company and brewer team up with the best entrepreneurs and innovators who have the courage to be bold and try something new. Tom says, “The quality of produce that Andy brings is uncompromising, and he’s a proper butcher. We want The Butcher’s Tap to be the heart and soul of Marlow, somewhere you can pop in every week for your usual order that we’ll have ready for you, but also a place you can have a pint and a hot pork pie straight out of
the oven.” The Butcher’s Tap’s food menu will of course be a celebration of meat, with plenty of British favourites such as braised faggots and hot-pots, homemade pies, scotch eggs and sausage rolls. This is no-frills but - as always - tasty eating; diners will be tucking into the roast meat of the day that’s informally served in a bun, no plates or cutlery required. Tom wants everyone to be able to eat with one hand and keep their other hand free for holding a drink while chatting to friends or battling it out during a pub quiz. The bar will stock a highly curated selection of real ales, lagers and spirits, with a small but ever-revolving choice of wines. The drinks list won’t be extensive but it will be thoughtfully chosen. Ultimately, The Butcher’s Tap will be a friendly, welcoming hub for the local community where people can meet for a drink and some simple, honest food.

PARTY TIME! Open up your home, office or club for a fun party – and raise money for your local charity
T
hat’s the appeal from The South Bucks Community Hospice which is making ‘House Party’ its major fundraising drive for November. The charity formally launched the initiative on Saturday at a ‘vibrant’ community open day attended by more than 100 people at its new home, Butterfly House in High Wycombe. A mixture of local residents, patients and patients’ families flocked to the event, and were given guided tours around the new beautifully appointed building in Totteridge, High Wycombe. In line with the launch of the House Party campaign, the open day was party-themed, so attendees enjoyed face painting, games and party food. The hospice is motivating that the whole South Bucks community will rally around during November to make it a fun month of fundraising to remember. Individual fundraising stories will be posted on the charity’s website, and ‘House Party heroes’ will be recognised with publicity if they wish for it. Residents, schools, clubs and businesses are being urged to hold fun events in their own homes or offices to celebrate the fact that the hospice has

Parties can be held anywhere and the hospice will provide organisers with a support pack. “A House Party can be any type of event really from a dinner party at home to a disco at school or an evening of knitting with tea and biscuits,” said Senior Fundraising Manager Becca Braithwaite. “The key is enjoyment while raising vital funds, however, small or large, for people who really need it.” Becca added: “Saturday’s open day was a truly vibrant event and there was a great atmosphere. We know it is the start of something big to come in the way of house parties in our area and across our county” Hospice Chief Executive Officer Jo Woolf said: We fund raise tirelessly to ensure we meet the evolving needs of our community. “Kindness is catchy, have a great time while helping others.” Visit sbh.org.uk/events for more information or call 01494 552761. s temperatures drop and the nights close in, Beaconsfield Cricket Club is getting ready to light up the town with its famous annual firework display, ignited this year by TV presenter, Gabby Logan. Following on from last year’s hugely successful event, the organisers have even more in store for this year’s festivities, with not one, but two displays
and two bonfires. The evening will begin with a special show designed for younger children and toddlers. The ‘Little Bang’ event will begin at 5pm and will include a shorter, quieter display which will be gentler on little ears and will include some fantastic children’s entertainment. Best of all, families will be able to enjoy all the attractions of the famous Beaconsfield Fireworks display without worrying about missed bedtimes. For older children and adults, the main event will be another stunning display by Titanium, the company responsible for the incredible London New Year’s pyrotechnics, plus the traditional giant bonfire to keep the cold at bay. There will be lots to keep the crowds entertained while waiting for the shows to begin, with a DJ, local bands and junior funfair rides. There are some fantastic food and drink options lined up too, including wood-fired pizzas, burgers, churros and chocolate, Indian food, hot drinks by Costa Coffee and, of course, a beer and wine tent. Last year, a partnership with local schools led to donations of over £3,000 and, with the support of local businesses Inland Homes, BP Collins and V.T. Wheels, the club hopes to raise even more in 2017. Local celebrity, Gabby Logan, is looking forward to a great evening with husband Kenny and their two children, commenting, ‘I’m delighted to be supporting such a fantastic community event which benefits local schools and clubs, as well as bringing the whole town together for a fun evening.’ If your child’s school is participating in the revenue generating ticket scheme, you will receive details from them including a code which should be entered when booking tickets on the BCC Fireworks website. Booking in advance will enable you to take advantage of a special discounted price, as well as benefitting your school directly. The Beaconsfield Cricket Club Fireworks take place on November 4th. Gates open at 5pm, with the children’s bonfire and fireworks finishing by 6pm. The main bonfire will be lit at 7.15pm with fireworks from 7.45pm. All tickets are valid for the entire evening and cost £6 in advance, £8 on the door. Under 5s receive free entry. 2017 MARLOW SANTA’S FUN RUN
T
THE DETAILS Another 2500 Santa’s set to run through Marlow High Street! 9.30 am on Sunday December 3rd confirmed Maximum 2500 runners to take part The 13th consecutive year for this family event £40,000 target set for charities and good causes Sytner BMW High Wycombe again lead sponsors

he Rotary Clubs of Marlow today announce that the 13th Santa’s Fun Run will take place on Sunday December 3rd starting at 9.30 am. They again promise a sea of red running through the streets of Marlow. As always this 5 kilometre run appeals to a wide range of participants – some serious but mostly not - and in doing so raises serious money for good causes. Participating Santas can raise money for their own personal charities – or they can raise it for Rotary. In 2016 around £35,000 was distributed to mainly local charities and other deserving causes, with a target of £40,000 this year. There will be two lead charities for the 2017 event – Scannappeal and Compassionate Friends. Scannappeal is of course a very well-known local charity, and most of us at the very least know of someone who will have benefited from this great cause. Compassionate Friends (also called Alliance of Hope) provides support for those who have lost someone through suicide, and more details of this much respected charity can be found on www. allianceofhope.org. Additionally, a host of other mainly local - charities benefit every year from this great event. The Rotary Clubs of Marlow are also delighted to confirm that Sytner BMW High Wycombe are the lead sponsors for the third year running The entry website will open for entries on September 1st, and potential participants should sign up quickly and then start raising sponsorship funds as early as possible. Those interested will need to book early to avoid disappointment (last year Rotary had to close to entries well before the event date). The website (www.santasfunrun.org) will also have lots of information and the all-important entry and sponsorship forms. Marlow Rotary Club President Peter Turner says: “Organising the Santa’s Fun Run involves a lot of hard work by the members of the Marlow, Marlow Thames and Marlow Bridge Rotary Clubs. We arrange everything from agreeing the 5 km route with the Council, developing and managing the website to ordering and distributing the Santa suits. And well over 100 people volunteer to help us on the day to make sure everything goes safely and smoothly.” www.santasfunrun.org

T
he Regent Street Motor Show is the largest free-to-view motor show in the UK, celebrating more than 125 years of motoring on London’s premier shopping street. The capital’s renowned thoroughfare will once again turn back the clock to a time when the newfangled horseless carriage first took patrons to the street that original architect John Nash envisaged as filled with ‘shops appropriated to articles of fashion and taste’.

Regent Street will be filled with cars from the past, present and future as mouth-watering classics are put on display alongside the latest future-proof low and zero emission electric and hybrid vehicles from leading manufacturers. The centre of attention for many of the 400,000-plus visitors will be the annual Veteran Car Concours d’Elegance. Held the day before the Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox, the Concours d’Elegance will see around 100 of these remarkable motoring pioneers on display. In keeping with the spirit of the event, many of the drivers and passengers will dress in period costume, reflecting the fashions of the era… fashions just like those that might have been purchased from Regent Street at the end of the 19th century. The first Regent Street Motor Show was staged in 2005 and it has now become a hugely popular must-see spectacle, attracting vast crowds keen not only to see the cars and take test drives in the latest machinery but also enjoy street entertainment from dance troupes and a motorcycle stunt team. The event is a great day out, offering a wealth of activities for the family to enjoy. And you see it all while enjoying a leisurely browse around the shops. Best of all, it’s totally free. ,000 runners have already secured their spot in the very first half marathon to go through both the City of London and Westminster. The London Landmarks Half Marathon is a brand new, closed road charity run taking place for the first time on 25 March 2018. Public entry to the London landmarks Half Marathon has now sold out, but the aim is to raise £4 million between Tommy’s and 100 participating charities who will take the other 5,000 spots. Many charities still have space available including Tommy’s, Alzheimer’s Research UK, Cancer Research UK, Mind, Macmillan Cancer Support, Prostate Cancer UK and Make-A-Wish. In total 10,000 runners will start on Pall Mall, finish by Downing Street and have fabulous views of London’s most iconic landmarks including Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral, Nelson’s Column, the Gherkin, the Shard, the Tower of London and the London Eye. The event is not your average half marathon, as it will celebrate London’s ‘quirky and hidden’ history, giving participants the chance to explore the capital while running a route like no other. For example, runners will experience a ‘bowler hat send-off ’ in true London style as the race starts by the world’s oldest hat shop Lock & Co, where the bowler hat originated from in 1849. Themed cheer stations will also give runners and spectators a glimpse into London’s incredible history. From Victorian postmen to suffragettes to Roman Gladiators, runners will smile at every mile hearing the cheers from Londoners gone by. And at the finish line runners will receive their medal in style from a famous character from the city’s history such as Dick Whittington and his cat or Henry VIII. The route will be lined with London’s amazing singers, dancers, bands and musicians – entertaining you every step of the way. The event is the brainchild of baby charity Tommy’s, who have spent two and a half years developing the event to benefit the entire charity sector. With their offices based in the heart of the City, Tommy’s noticed a gap in the market, realising a central London half marathon taking in the City and all of the Capital’s landmarks did not exist. Tommy’s therefore took the decision to pursue developing and launching a new central London half marathon to benefit both themselves, and many other charities too. Tommy’s is delighted to be launching this exciting new event with the support of Westminster City Council and the City of London Corporation. Just Giving are the official fundraising partner and the event will be delivered on the day by Human Race. Lia Bowman, Director at the London Landmarks Half Marathon commented, “After 2.5 years of planning, we are so excited to bring this new event to our capital and are over the moon that public entry has sold out so quickly. We are looking forward to raising millions of pounds for charities and giving runners and spectators a day they will remember and talk about for a long time!

toke Park’s Executive Chris Wheeler was a very busy man at this year’s Thame Food Festival, which took place from Saturday 30th September – Sunday 1st October. The D Throne S Electric

or those of you with a love of luxury vehicles, this is a one in a million chance to make your child have the same tastes as you - and the quality of the craftsmanship is unparalleled considering that it’s intended for use by a child. The four-wheeled work of art bears all the hallmarks of craftsmanship one might associate with a luxury brand. The super-luxe D Throne S is painstakingly designed and is in all probability the most luxurious toy your child could ever own. The tiny automobile also offers you a perfect reason to bond with you little one, with a space on its rear that easily allows an adult to hop on board. Parents can also activate different modes on the smart controller and turn the D. Throne S into a motorised or non-motorised stroller. Designed by Seoul-based Hyunsoo Choi and Taeno Yoon at Joongho Choi Studio, D Throne is certainly no ordinary car manufacturer – they are currently on their third generation of their electric cars which just seem to be getting better and better with time. A great attention to detail can also be seen in the exterior and interior design of the car with finishes of exquisite car enamel and hand-made leather seats, four-inch aluminum wheels, side LEDs and working headlights for safety. This model also has been composed by simply dividing its body parts into two sections, which are top and bottom,

using plastic molding techniques. In addition, it is designed to simultaneously configure gold grill parts located in front of the body, and a fender structure attached to each wheel, which maintains a design of a classic car. Concurrently, it has implemented a user-friendly feature that allows users to safely and easily manage and use the car. The luxe little car can be purchased in black, khaki, and. an off-white colour (complete with shimmering copper accentuations in both models). If you can afford to pamper your child silly (with no monetary limits whatsoever!), then buying him/ her the luxurious D Throne S is probably the ultimate gift. The rechargeable battery provides up to 10 hours of driving time, so a family can enjoy outdoor activities while it is available to convert the mode in situations when carrying children in something like a stroller. It has slip-proof breaks to prevent the car slipping. To have these various functions possible, the structures of the design and appearance have been delicately constructed by placing the parts and accessories though the engineering technology during the electronic car development process. The Korean electric car manufacturer has certainly made it big by going small, and counts amongst its esteemed clients Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Al Maktoum, the Crown Price of Dubai, who placed a customised order blinged out with over 2,000 Swarovski crystals.

THE HISTORY OF Following the recent announcement that Michael Kors has bought the luxury accessories brand for £896m - we take a look back at the history of Jimmy Choo, rising from humble origins in a cobbler workshop to becoming one of Britain’s best-known fashion brands.
2017 Bridal Collection’ Below: Mens Autumn Winter 2017 Collection; Right: Jimmy Choo
Y
ou can trace its roots back to a bespoke shoemaker, Jimmy Choo, based in the East End of London in the early 1990s. The fashion designer was born Jimmy Choo Yeang Keat in Penang, Malaysia in 1961, and using the craftsmanship he learned from his father, also a cobbler, Choo made his first pair of shoes at the age of just 11. His father wanted him to follow in his footsteps. Mr Choo recalls “When I first started, my father wouldn’t let me make a shoe. Instead, he said: “Sit and watch, sit and watch.” For months and months, I did that.” After learning from his father about the craft of shoemaking, Choo made his way to England in the early 1980s to study at the Cordwainers Technical College in Hackney, where he graduated with honours in 1983. Choosing to remain in England, Choo opened his first shop in Hackney in 1986 in an old hospital building. It didn’t take long for Choo’s reputation to build. The sexy cut, fashionable design, and exceptional Italian craftsmanship struck a chord with a sophisticated clientele, and the first collection enjoyed 6 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
immediate success. Jimmy Choo was among the first to bring shoes and handbags to Hollywood where the red carpet proved to be the ideal runway for the brand. Soon, Choo became the darling of the celebrity world, in particular Princess Diana, who donned Choo’s footwear seemingly everywhere she went. High-profile devotees also include the Duchess of Cambridge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kendal Jenner. The fictional Carrie Bradshaw in television series “Sex and the City.” famously sported Jimmy Choo shoes, boosting the brand’s status. Within two years of opening his shop, Choo’s shoes were featured in an eight-page spread in Vogue magazine. And it was his relationship with Vogue that would prove to be instrumental in the rise of the Jimmy Choo brand. Despite the rise of his popularity, Choo was still a small operation, making just 20 hand-made pairs shoes a week. But Tamara Mellon, an accessories editor at Vogue, who often hired Choo to make shoes for fashion shoots, sensed a larger market for Choo’s creations. She approached the shoemaker about partnering to create a line of ready-to-wear footwear -
“It’s a beautiful, distinctive art, and shoes are like the foundations. If the foundations aren’t right, the building won’t stand upright, and if a woman’s balance isn’t right, nothing else is.” - Jimmy Choo

JIMMY CHOO with a goal of creating a global luxury business. In 1996, both Choo and Mellon quickly grew the business, keeping the focus on creating high-end footwear, but no longer relying on the idea that every single pair had to be made by Choo himself. They contracted with Italian factories and opened their first boutique shop in Motcomb Street, London. Two years later, the company expanded to the US, securing locations in the premiere luxury shopping destinations of the world’s most prestigious cities including Madison Avenue in New York City and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, also creating a line-up of adoring Hollywood celebrities including Julia Roberts and Renee Zellweger. International expansion continued with Jimmy Choo stores opening in Avenue Montaigne in Paris, Via Condotti in Rome, Ginza in Tokyo, and prestigious shopping districts Sloane Street and Bond Street here in London. And by the turn of the century, the Choo name was a global brand, with high-end retail clients that included Harrods and Saks Fifth Avenue carrying Choo footwear. The Choo brand had also expanded to handbags and other accessories. But in the background, all was not well. Choo and Mellon were at odds about the direction of the company. In what would become one of the more fascinating rifts in the fashion industry, Choo didn’t think bigger was better. He questioned the quality of the shoes the company was making, and seemed to long for the days when he was back at his shop in Hackney making a small number of pieces of footwear for specific clients. In 2001, Choo sold his half of the company to Robert Bensoussan of Equinox Luxury Holdings for $30 million. Jimmy Choo was then put up for sale in April after struggling to retain the status it held in the early 2000’s. Both Choo and Mellon departed in 2011 when JAB Luxury bought the firm for more than £500m. Today, Jimmy Choo encompasses a complete luxury accessories brand. Women’s shoes remain the core of the product offer, alongside handbags, small leather goods, scarves, sunglasses, eyewear, belts, fragrance and men’s shoes. Jimmy Choo has a global store network encompassing more than 150 stores and is present in the most prestigious department stores worldwide. This is what makes Jimmy Choo an interesting pairing with Michael Kors, as the former is known for its sky-high stilettos and glam, crystal-embellished designs, while the latter gravitates towards down-toearth leather goods and ready-to-wear. Jimmy himself now concentrates on a very personal business, where he designs directly for clients in high-end couture. Jimmy Choo was awarded an OBE in 2002, and girls and women around the world continue to covet owning a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes! www.jimmychoo.com

The Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run Celebrating the history of French Motoring
T
he Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run supported by Hiscox, takes place on Sunday 5 November, providing a magnificent spectacle and offering members of the public a rare opportunity to watch more than 400 pre-1905 veteran vehicles embark upon a 60-mile journey from Hyde Park to Madeira Drive on Brighton’s seafront. In true tradition, the 2017 Run takes place on the first Sunday of November at the break of dawn, just before 7am, and commemorates the Emancipation Run of 14 November 1896, which celebrated the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act. It was this Act that raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 mph to 14 mph and abolished the requirement for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag. The Locomotive Act was still widely known as the ‘Red Flag Act’ and, to mark this milestone, a red flag was symbolically ripped in half at the start of the Emancipation Run, just as it is today. In 2017, more than 120 years after the very first Run was held, the event aims to follow in the footsteps of last year’s success, which saw one of the best finish-rates to date. Year after year, the Run sees a great number of French automobiles join the comradery. In 2016, a remarkable 49 per cent of all entries were French-manufactured vehicles – and, in recognition of all the French automobiles and participants, this year the Run is celebrating French Motoring and its contributions to the industry. This year also introduces a new route. On leaving Hyde Park, the veteran cars will pass many
6 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
well-known landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Horseguards and Big Ben before crossing Westminster Bridge. Participants will then leave London via Kennington, Clapham and Morden, passing through Balham. After Morden, the revised route by-passes Sutton on the A217 to Banstead, Tadworth and Reigate before re-joining the traditional route at Redhill. From here it takes the A23 to Horley and the midway halt at Crawley. A special viewing area in Crawley High Street has been established for the thousands of spectators who turn out to support the Veteran Car Run. From Crawley, the route heads to Brighton via Pease Pottage, Staplefield, Cuckfield, Ansty, Burgess Hill, Hassocks and Clayton where it joins the A23 for the run into the finish at Madeira Drive. The new route will ensure there are plenty of fabulous viewing spots for the many thousands of spectators who line the streets to wave the veterans on their way. The Run is just one element of the Royal Automobile Club’s London Motor Week, which includes the free-to-view Regent Street Motor Show, to be held on Saturday 4 November. The Veteran Car Run is supported by Title Partner: Bonhams, Official Partners: Hiscox, Your London Airport Gatwick, Harrods, Abels, Visit Brighton, Chopard, Hagerty, Hattingley Valley, RAC Motoring Services and Total, and Manufacturer Patrons: Honda and Renault. ermal fillers are a non-permanent cosmetic injectable treatment which can effectively treat some of the deeper underlying signs of ageing, such as lines, wrinkles, loss of volume, jawline sagging and under-eye bags. The most commonly used fillers today are largely composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), a sugar molecule which occurs naturally in the body. HA is found in abundance in our skin, cartilage, joints and the fluid in our eyes and is the most water-loving molecule known to man. Around 1/3rd of our total HA is made and broken down daily, and as we age our bodies’ natural ability to regenerate HA slowly decreases. With our advanced understanding of your facial anatomy and the ageing process, we take a full-face approach to your treatment, rather than the oldfashioned method of merely ‘chasing lines’. Our patients receive compliments on how well they look, rather than being asked if they have had ‘work done’.
Here are 8 steps to help you on your facial filler journey: 1. The reason: Consider WHY you want to have a facial filler treatment – how is it going to benefit you? 2. Research: Do your research before booking a consultation. There is lots of information online, but if you can contact someone who has previously undergone treatment, even better! Visit www.this-is-me.com to read more about real life experiences. 3. Location: An important yet regularly dismissed aspect. A clinical setting is crucial for proper lighting - do not let someone inject you in a sitting room. 4. Qualified practitioner: Finding a qualified practitioner is vital to ensuring
a safe treatment. Ask your practitioner about their qualifications, and preferably only continue treatment with a qualified doctor, nurse or surgeon. 5. In-depth consultation: Ideally, this should be at least half an hour, and your practitioner should record your medical history, any known allergies and discuss any safety concerns associated with treatment. 6. Clinical assessment: A good practitioner will undertake a detailed facial assessment before starting any treatment. They will advise on the best areas to treat and give you an idea of a realistic finishing result. 7. Treatment planning: You should receive a personalised treatment plan to reach your goals, because, after all, no one size fits all. At S-Thetics we use a full-face approach, done gradually so that all areas are gently addressed to create refreshed and natural-looking results. 8. Aftercare support: Prior to treatment, ensure you will have access to aftercare support. This will allow you a more relaxed treatment journey, with your practitioner on hand to address any queries or issues that you may have. Following these eight simple steps will help to ensure you have a safe and stress-free treatment journey. Miss Balaratnam, medical director of S-Thetics, is a fully qualified surgeon and cosmetic doctor and holds the prestigious title of “Local Country Ambassador” (LCA) for Allergan, the manufacturers of BOTOX® and the Juvederm® Vycross and the latest Juvederm® Volite range of fillers. As one of only a handful of expert UK practitioners selected as an LCA, she believes in the importance of a patient taking the time to select the right practitioner for them.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 10 October 2017
I
t is estimated that 1 in 6 people experienced a common mental health problem in the last week*. This means it’s almost certain that you, or people you know, are suffering with a mental health condition. Tuesday, 10th October is World Mental Health Day so this month we ask Your Doctor’s Dr Peter Petrie questions about mental health and why we need to be talking about it. Q. What does mental health mean? A. Our mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being and can affect how we think, feel, act, and how we deal with certain situations. Our mental health can also affect our physical health. Q. Are mental health problems always very serious? Mental health conditions encompass a wide range of illnesses which can include anxiety, depression, postnatal depression, as well as disorders which involve psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Some are extremely serious and some can be addressed simply by talking to a loved one. or perhaps a therapist, or through prescription medicine. It is always best to get checked out by your GP if you think you may be suffering from a mental health condition. Q. How can you tell if you have a mental health issue? A. Spotting a mental health issue in a friend, or even in yourself is difficult, but some tell-tale signs may be characterised by over or under-eating, sleeping too much or too little, unpredictable mood swings, having low energy, being forgetful, fighting with family and friends, having persistent negative thoughts which you can’t get out of your head, thoughts of self-harm or harming others, or hearing voices which are not there. Q. What should I do if I think someone I know has a mental health issue? A. It’s much better to tackle the issue as soon as possible to stop the condition worsening. Medical professionals can help with support, advice,
7 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
Our mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being medications and any necessary onward referrals, as well as equipping the patient with the self-coping tools to help deal with their condition. Encourage them to talk to their GP. Q. What should I tell my children about mental health? A. Educate your children about mental health and keep all channels of communication open. Make sure they know the signs and symptoms and that they understand how to help someone. Many schools are still very behind in educating children about mental health so for now; it may be down to you. Q. Should I tell my work if I am feeling depressed? Having a mental health condition is just as valid as any physical health condition. Tell someone at work that you trust. Sometimes sharing experiences means that your colleagues will understand if you need to take some time off. Looking after yourself at work is invaluable in ensuring we don’t spiral into a worsening state. If you are concerned about yourself or a loved one, talk to a GP.

utumn has well and truly arrived, and like it or not, winter is on its way. It’s never too early to start your prep for the party season. Courthouse Clinics Watford has a selection of body contouring treatments that can help you ‘rock the frock’ and look your very best, however and wherever you’re celebrating. Cool Tech Fat Freezing is one of our most popular procedures. It offers a fast, effective, non-invasive way to permanently get rid of stubborn pockets of fat from problem areas such as thighs, tummy, bottom, back and arms. As the name suggests, it works by freezing fat cells, which causes them to die off and be eliminated through the body’s own lymphatic system. It’s the perfect, pain-free alternative to liposuction – and it achieves visible results after just one session! Another popular body contouring treatment at Courthouse Clinics is Endermologie – and now is the ideal time to begin a course if you’re keen to look slim and slinky this festive season. Endermologie is scientifically proven to reduce the appearance of cellulite, boost circulation and improve skin tone. So it’s perfect if you’re looking to banish those lumps and bumps beneath your little black dress. If you’re interested in skin tightening, then why not try our Radiofrequency body treatment? Our Alma Accent machine painlessly heats the body’s surface to tighten loose skin – a common side effect of weight loss. So if you’ve managed to lose a few pounds ahead of the traditional Christmas excess, Alma Accent will help to restore your skin tone and resolve any sagging. Our Soprano skin tightening is another great minimally invasive treatment option if you’re after firmer, younger looking skin. It uses high-intensity infrared light to painlessly heat up the skin’s deeper layers, stimulating collagen production and improving surface skin tone and tautness. Best of all, it can be used on almost any part of the body. In short, it’s never been easier to get in shape for Christmas. The S Psychology of Red Flags & Relationships Life Magazines spoke to Gerrards Cross based Dr Shireen Saluja, of Buckinghamshire Psychology.
7 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
hireen is a Clinical Psychologist, having undertaken her doctoral training in Chicago, USA. Over the coming months Dr Saluja will be exploring different subjects for us and looking at how working with a qualified psychologist can help in many different aspects of life. This month, Shireen talks about the ‘red-flags’ in relationships and how her and her team of qualified professionals can help you be aware of them, recognise them and understand how to make the changes that may be required. “Red Flags” was a term first learned during Shireens’ training, learning that how people identify them can completely change the way they understand the world around them. Red flags are our guide, our gut instinct. Many of us are aware of our red flags however, many choose to ignore them. Red flags come in all shapes, sizes and people. They creep into our lives and take over, be it that they hinder our work, our relationships, our emotional wellbeing, our career paths and so on. Possibly the most commonly ignored red flags are those surrounding relationships. Examples of these could be controlling behaviour, feeling onedge around someone, someone insulting you in a joking way. Perhaps you feel the need to check on what your partner is up to – they won’t introduce you to their friends or family. Someone having an emotional dependency on you and finally, the feeling that you are on an emotional roller-coaster. Relationship red flags are possibly the hardest for people to identify. The fear of recognising the
problem, of facing the problem – of accepting what you already know – the fear of being alone. Natural instinct is to want to see the world as a safe and beautiful place – the need to educate and learn about what may not be acceptable to you is key. Red Flags are life’s way of telling us to STOP, to be mindful and aware. The work of a Psychologist is to help promote personal and mental growth for an individual. It is there to help guide you for the answers many of you already have. Often people find themselves entering and re-entering abusive or bad relationships and can’t figure out why they choose the same types of individuals to love. This does not necessarily only apply to an intimate relationship, but can be for friendships as well. Often, we just know that something is wrong. We know things haven’t been working in our favour, our mood has dropped, our confidence has changed, our ability to differentiate right and wrong has been manipulated. We just don’t know how to STOP and see the red flags. Therapy can help you identify, challenge, and understand the red flags and ways to change your own personal behaviour to stop entering and re-entering relationships that will only harm you mentally and physically. Red flags are our friends!! HOW TO MASTER THE
VICTORIA BECKHAM SOFT TAILORING LOOK
words: Katie Wright
S

leek and slouchy has become VB’s signature style, but you can emulate her approach with just a few strategic high street purchases. Remember when Victoria Beckham was known for the taut, second-skin dresses she not only sent down the catwalk but wore herself almost non-stop? Well, times have changed, and now the 43-year-old says ‘soft tailoring’ is her signature look, for both her designer collections and her personal style. That means out with the constricting frocks and in with slouchy trousers, silky shirts and mannish blazers. It’s a style that catwalk brands do well, but you don’t have to pay luxury prices to get the VB look - and there are just three key pieces you need (plus a pair of box-fresh white trainers). First up, a pair of wide-leg trousers, cut straight rather than flared so they pool satisfyingly around your ankles. Add to that a shirt or blouse that’s fluid (not crisp) and top it off with a slightly oversized blazer (pushed up sleeves are optional). Neutrals lend themselves well to tailored pieces but these sleek shapes mean you can experiment with clashing block colours or choose tonal shades of camel, cream or red from head to toe. Whatever the occasion, here’s how to master the relaxed tailoring look - it’s as easy as one, two, three...

SELF CHECKS STILL MOST POWERFUL WEAPON IN BATTLE AGAINST BREAST CANCER MISS HARLEEN DEOL
T
here are three main risk factors when it comes to developing breast cancer unfortunately there is very little you can actually do about any of them! However, regular self-checks and an awareness of what to look out for can help keep the number of successful for breast cancer treatments on the rise, said Miss Harleen Deol, a Consultant Breast Surgeon at Spire Harpenden Hospital. “The main risk is, unsurprisingly, being a woman,” she explained. “Over 99% of new cases of breast cancer are in women and there isn’t much you can do about that! The second is biggest risk is getting older - more than 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50 and the third is significant family history – although this isn’t as common as some may think, with around 5% of people diagnosed with breast cancer having inherited a faulty BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene.” But Miss Deol stressed that regular checks and early action are still the biggest weapons in a woman’s armoury when it comes to beating the disease and help keep treatment success figures on the rise. Figures from Cancer Research UK show that

Having qualified as a doctor from Barts and the Royal London in 1997, Miss Harleen Deol became the first woman to enter the Royal London Hospital General Surgical Rotation in over 20 years. Specialising in Breast Surgery, Miss Deol gained extensive training in numerous London Breast Units and the Royal Marsden Hospital (Sutton), prior to being awarded a prestigious British Association of Surgical Oncology Oncoplastic Breast Surgery National Fellowship. As a Consultant Breast Surgeon, Miss Deol incorporates the latest plastic surgery techniques in the management of breast cancer, (Oncoplastic Breast Surgery) allowing for an improved cosmetic outcome and breast appearance after surgery. These have the proven benefit of better psychological recovery from the impact of breast surgery.

around 8 out of 10 women in England survive their disease for ten years or more, compared with 4 out of 10 back in the 1970s. Figures for surviving for five years or more are even higher at almost nine out of ten – 87%. Despite increasing survival rates CRUK says that about 60,000 people in the UK are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer every year, resulting in around 12,000 deaths. “Without any doubt early detection leads to better treatment results. That means we need to ensure that every woman knows how to carry out effective selfcheck procedures and, just as importantly, what to do if she thinks something is wrong. “It is important to get an early appointment with a GP to discuss the matter. The patient will then receive informed advice and, if necessary, be placed on the correct pathway for treatment,” said Miss Deol. Possible symptoms that can be found by self-examination: • Painless lumps in the breast • Changes in the size or shape of a breast • Dimpling to the skin of the breast • Thickened breast tissue • Nipple inversion • Lump or thickening behind the nipple • Rash affecting the nipple • Blood-stained discharge from the nipple • Swelling or a new lump in the armpit • Clear nipple discharge coming from one side. Although finding a lump in your breast does not always signify breast cancer it is important that women ‘got to know’ their breasts so they could spot changes. “Many women will experience lumpy breasts just before their period; often this disappears after the period. However, it is important to keep checking and if the lump doesn’t go away then get it checked out by your GP,” said Miss Deol.

NEW LIPSTICKS FOR AUTUMN Pucker up with our pick of the best new lippies. WORDS: Katie Wright
N
ew season fashion drops aren’t the only reason to get excited this time of year – the autumn/winter make-up collections will be landing in stores, too, bringing with them a boatload of lipsticks we think you’re going to love. Whether you’re a glossy girl or an all-matte-everything type, there’s a shade and shine level for you. From barely-there buffs to uber-brights, we’ve rounded up the lippies vying for a place in your make-up bag -– and your heart – this autumn. Smashbox Be Legendary Triple Tone Lipstick Red Ombre Take the shortcut to an ombre lip with Smashbox’s clever triple-stacked stick. The technique takes a bit of getting used to (you have to turn it upside down to do the lower lip) and you’ll need a liner that matches the outermost shade to get a really clean outline, but the effect is gorgeous, and it’s still a whole lot easier than painting on three separate colours. £17.50, smashbox.co.uk Bourjois Rouge Velvet The Lipstick Rubik’s Cute Matte liquid lipsticks can sometimes feel thick and caked on, but this new solid formula from Bourjois is lightweight without compromising on colour payoff. Love a blue-toned red? Rubik’s Cute (see what they’ve done there?) is the hue to choose. £8.99, Boots MAC Viva Glam Taraji P Henson 2 Lipstick The next iteration of the link-up between MAC and the American actress and writer brings us a gorgeous golden-mahogany lipstick with a subtle metallic sheen. £16.50, maccosmetics.co.uk Nars Audacious Lipstick Louise New to the Audacious Lipstick line-up for autumn are six punchy and pigmented shades, including Louise, a deep opaque blackberry. £25, narscosmetics.co.uk Ainsel Sarong Lipstick New brand Ainsel wants you to forgo trends and find your perfect make-up staples instead, which is why its eight inaugural lipsticks are all classic shades, like Sarong, an uber-bright red with orange undertones. £19.50, ainsel.com RMK Irresistible Glow Lipstick Sheer Beige Part of a collaboration with Japanese designer Taro Horiuchi to mark the brand’s 20th anniversary, this light, pearly-coral gloss is a real complexion-lifter. £22, Selfridges

Pinkishbrown Oh Bae is our new daytime favourite. £16, FeelUnique.com Mary Kay Gel Semi-Shine Lipstick Naturally Buff Imparting a subtle sheen rather than all-out dazzle, Mary Kay’s Semi-Shine lipsticks come in 12 pinky shades, ideal if you want that ‘your lips but better’ vibe. £14, marykay.co.uk Glamglow Plumprageous Metallic Lip Plumper Treatment Suggestive With plumping properties and a metallic finish, Glamglow’s new liquid lippie promises a Kylie Jenner-level pout - and it really delivers. Hazlemere Windows Assist On DIY SOS Big Build Project
O
ne day about 5 years ago Midwife Sascha Koutrouza came home to her home in Welwyn Garden City with a throat infection that sadly changed everything in her life forever. Doctors believe the throat infection caused her immune system to overrespond, leaving her with permanent kidney disease. She was reassured that it would be decades before she needed treatment, but unfortunately Sascha’s symptoms grew rapidly. In just six months, Sascha had final stage kidney disease requiring hospital dialysis at least 4 days a week. Family weekends for Sascha were spent feeling sick and exhausted. She kept on going for the sake of her family – never complaining; but they were reaching all at the point of breaking and were naturally concerned for her future. The main hope was home dialysis – but this hope was dashed when she was told there wasn’t the space at home for this to happen. Mr Andrew Koutrouza and the extended family simply could

not afford the extension, which is when DIY SOS got involved: A single-storey extension would create the space needed for the NHS to provide an ‘athome’ (specific to Sascha’s type of kidney treatment) dialysis system for daily home treatment. The build would turn everything around for this family and mark a vital step in Sascha regaining her life.
THE DETAILS To view the same UPVC window products supplied and fitted by Hazlemere during this programme, visit one of their home improvement showrooms. The Hertfordshire Showroom is located at Unit 10 Mundells Industrial Estate, Little Mundells, Welwyn Garden City, Herts, AL7 1EW.
The BBC put out an appeal on Facebook for tradesmen and materials, and given Hazlemere Windows have a showroom in Welwyn Garden City, they decided they would supply and fit all the new and replacement windows and doors needed on the project. So for one whole week last year four of Hazlemere’s most experienced craftsmen gave up a week of their time to install new windows and doors. The Hazlemere team consisted of Senior Installer John Layton, Installation Manager Alan Layton, Operations Director Jason Bradshaw and Fitter Michal Kowalczyk. These guys worked alongside DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles, along with series regulars Mark Miller, Chris Frediani, Julian Perryman and Billy Byrne from 23rd August 2016 to 1st September 2016, The team from Hazlemere Window Company worked their socks off throughout the entire Big Build week, fitting new windows and doors, whether as replacement windows and doors or new windows and doors into new builders openings. Thanks to the generosity of aluminium and PVCu window and door manufacturers, Conservatory Outlet of Wakefield in Yorkshire, and double glazed sealed unit manufacturers Nicholls and Clarke of Fareham in Hampshire, Hazlemere Window Company were able to procure the glass, window and door frames from these suppliers at cost, which meant they were able to donate all the products and their labour free of charge to the Welwyn Garden City family in need, being helped out by DIY SOS to give them a brighter future. Consequently, Hazlemere sincerely thank both the Conservatory Outlet and Nicholls and Clarke for playing no small part in enabling the lives of this needy family to be transformed. As part of the transformation project, Hazlemere Windows were asked to survey, supply and install white A+ energy rated PVCu double glazed windows throughout the house and also in the new extension that was built by the DIY SOS
team and all the other tradesmen, and suppliers who had also given their time and resources to the cause. In addition Hazlemere supplied and fitted a double glazed aluminium bi-folding door to the extension built by the DIY SOS team, enabling Sascha’s family to open up her new living space, as and when the weather allows! The DIY SOS programme, showing how this Hertfordshire home in the Knightsfield area of Wewlyn Garden City was totally transformed was first broadcast live by the BBC 1 at 9pm on Thursday 15th June 2017.
The Buckinghamshire Showroom is located in Wellington Road, Cressex Business Park, High Wycombe, Bucks, HP12 3PR. For directions call 01494 854266 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk

What’s happening in the
world of tiles and stone...
Stuart from Slab Tiles and Stone in Beaconsfield looks at what’s hot right now and examines future trends in the world of tiles and natural stone.
Cement Effect
Natural Stone
This has been the break out theme from the past couple of seasons and is still going strong. From loft style apartments, through to country house refurbs, we have seen this look go from strength to strength.
Whether this is marble, limestone, slate or travertine, the classic look of beautiful natural stone will never go out of fashion. We specialise in bespoke stone work and flooring and we source material from all over the world.
Wood Effect
In and Out
With the advent of super high definition printing techniques the wood effect porcelain currently on the market is almost indistinguishable from the real thing but with no maintenance or re-finishing required.
A big innovation from Italy over the past year has been 2cm thick porcelain matching your internal choice to enable your floor to ‘flow’ right from inside out, creating a seamless scheme from kitchen out to the patio and beyond.

A LIGHT BRIGHT KITCHEN WITH A WOW FACTOR
K&B Studios create a dream kitchen for Lynda and Robin
L
ynda and Robin of Buckinghamshire wanted both their kitchen and utility room replaced and found K&B Studios after visiting several other retailers. They had only partially liked the plans that had been drawn up by others and were not sure overall with the designs. “We decided to look a bit more up-market and have something that we really wanted. That’s where K&B Studios came into the picture,” says Lynda. The area in question was large, so there was a lot of scope to change things. The room was initially very dark, so the brief was to lighten it up, as well as installing a new kitchen plus a central island and a few luxury extras. Lynda says, “From our initial meeting in the showroom where the team showed us what was available, to the design phase where the designer came to our house to give numerous ideas and suggestions the input was superb. The designer suggested layouts and equipment that we could have and the resulting computer design printouts were the best we had seen - almost a photograph of the finished kitchen. We knew then we’d found the right people for the job!” What they have now is very different, much more functional and easier to use. “It’s definitely got the ‘wow’ factor says Lynda. “It is perfect for us and we could not be happier. I love the built in aspect of the island – so much easier than having a table and

chairs. One of my favourite things is the Quooker tap - I adore it we’ve been able to get rid of the kettle and it’s made a big difference. “The utility room is really useful too – it just all flows together really well. I can’t fault any part of the process at all, and I’m just happy we chose K&B Studios.” The Kitchen and Bedroom Studios, 43-45 Mayflower Way, Beaconsfield HP9 1UG; 01494 677727; www.kbstudios.co.uk

Recent great results
AT DAWSON’S We’ve had some really fantastic results here recently at Dawson’s. High prices were certainly seen in our August sale, in part thanks to an exciting consignment from the estate of the late gallery owner Anthony Basil Vivian Tooth.

op seller from this consignment and in fact in the whole sale was a beautiful suite of Anglo-Indian carved hardwood chairs. With every spare staff member assigned to a telephone bidder, the chairs sold after a fierce international war for an outstanding £26,000. The Tooth collection also saw a number of Polynesian Island paddles and war clubs consigned to the saleroom. Although all four of the intricately carved pieces gained a good amount of interest, it was the Tongan war club that brought out the bidders’ inner warrior, finally selling for a strong £8000. Another best seller was the beautiful Indo-Portuguese Gujurat mother-of-pearl and silver mounted bowl together with a further brass mounted shallow dish. These museum worthy pieces were coveted worldwide, translating into a multitude of online and telephone bidders and finally selling for £22,000. The mother-of-pearl was discovered at a local property, whilst one of our valuers was visiting a client to look at something completely different. It was just pure chance that they came across this gem, the sellers were delighted as now they can have their dream conservatory. If these top results have got you thinking what you might have in your attic, we would love to hear from you! Feel free to give us a call or email to organise a free house call with no obligation to sell, or drop in and see us. We hold open valuation days every Tuesday and Thursday from ten until five. Because we advertise online, on a number of platforms that allow people to bid from all around the world, every item we take in is ensured the best chance to sell. We also send our catalogue out widely across the UK, to a large number of private and commercial clients. These are all reasons that we have so many online and telephone bids as well as bidders in the room on sale day, and items are seen to continually gain top prices.

Upcoming specialist sales We are very excited to announce three upcoming specialist sales, with more dates to be set in the coming year. Our first, a Rare Books, Stamps and Maps sale will be held on Saturday 28th October. Michael Elston, who recently joined our team, will be holding two book sales a year, his next valuation day will be Thursday 5th October. Consignments so far include an edition of Peter Pan and another of the Brother’s Grimm, both with exquisite Arthur Rackham illustrations, a 1549 edition of the works of Thomas Aquinas, a signed copy of D. H. Lawrence’s explicit Lady Chatterley’s Lover and a number of John Speed maps. Quite the selection! On Saturday 4th November we will be holding a Rock and Pop Music Memorabilia auction. We have found this area to be very popular in past auctions, with our top selling lot so far a signed Jimi Hendrix record selling in July for £1000. Most exciting of all is our Modern and Contemporary Design sale with renowned industry figure, author, television regular and 20th century design expert Mark Hill, on the 2nd of December. These three sales will be held alongside our usual monthly auctions, and we are currently accepting entries for all sales.
Mark Hill joins as a specialist consultant Our really big news is that Mark Hill has now joined our team as a specialist consultant. Mark will be holding biannual Modern and Contemporary Design auctions and will also be holding a specialist valuation day every month at our Berkshire saleroom. Mark is a lifelong collector, and this really shines through in his career. Having started over twenty years ago as a porter and Junior Cataloguer at Bonhams in London, he moved to Sotheby’s
where he became a Specialist. In 2006 Mark founded his own boutique publishing company and has since written and published twelve books on 20th century design. Mark has been an expert on the BBC Antiques Roadshow since 2006, and has co-presented four primetime TV series on antiques, collecting and interior design for BBC2. We can’t wait to introduce him to you all. “Modern, progressive, appealing, and hip. And that doesn’t just describe the 20th century design you’ll find in our auctions. These descriptions also apply to Dawson’s itself! I’m thrilled to be returning to the auction world with Aubrey and his team and can’t wait to get my teeth into our first auction.” – Mark Hill

SPACERS TILE AND WOOD FLOORING LTD
S
pacers Tile and Wood Flooring have been supplying high quality Engineered Oak floors, Porcelain Wall and floor tiles, mosaics, glass and Natural Stone tiles to the retail and commercial sector for over 25 years. We have worked closely with our factories to produce a range of wood flooring and Porcelain Tiles that not only mirror current trends but is technically and environmentally the most advanced available. All our Engineered Oak is thoroughly tested, is EUTR compliant and SVLK certified. The top layer is genuine Western European Oak. None of it is Chinese or Siberian so you are assured of its source and quality. The ‘Core” (the important bit) is constructed of single species Plantation Hevea (Rubberwood). It doesn’t grow naturally in South East Asia so is farmed for this purpose. As the Hevea tree nears the end of its rubber producing life it is felled and immediately replaced with a younger sapling that not only uses up more harmful CO2 but also produces more rubber. The Hevea used for the core of all our wood flooring has a density similar to Oak giving our floors unsurpassed stability in all different climates and environments. Hevea will always outperform any plywood or softwood cored material found in so many cheaper alternative wood floors. The back layer construction is also a locally grown plantation pine species, which again adds to the already excellent stability of our flooring. The vast majority of our wood flooring has

undergone some degree of hand finishing ensuring a consistent high quality, high performance wood floor. This hand finishing gives each of our floors a ‘bespoke’ feel. Our ‘Antique’ finished floors all feature textures and surfaces produced entirely by hand rather than automation that gives each style a unique feel in terms of grain and colour. All of our Oak floors are treated with the specifically designed Extreme Matt Oil. Using German technology from Klump Coatings in Stuttgart these oils, as long as the floor is kept clean during installation and undergoes some form of regular basic domestic cleaning, will require no further applications throughout the floors life. Our own range of Porcelain is given the same level of commitment in its design and manufacture as our wood, reflecting our commitment to bringing our customers the best possible products available. But its not only Porcelain tiles and Wood flooring our showrooms can offer you…. We have vast displays of Natural Stone, Glass Tiles, Mosaics and wood effect tiles from most of the biggest names in the business. Not only that but we are also main dealers for Amtico and Karndean with the most up to date ‘studio design’ stands in house that display their products beautifully. When you choose to buy your tiles or flooring from Spacers you are assured that it is among some of the best available in the world….Our staff are helpful and vastly experienced and will assist you throughout the design and selection process in a modern friendly environment. COLOURFUL AUTUMN BARREL Use our step-by-step guide to create a beautiful arrangement for the season. words: Ella Walker
W
ith autumn upon us, it’s time to think about what you can plant now that will give you greenery and colour in your garden throughout the cooler months. It’s also a great time to plant up a container, which can be put on the patio to brighten up the garden, or placed by the front door to welcome guests. Sarah Squire, deputy chairman at Squire’s Garden Centres, advises: “The key things to remember are choose a container that you like the look of, add good quality compost, and above all, choose plants you love. “Think about colour combinations - make sure you include some evergreen plants and then add either vibrant reds, oranges and yellows for an autumnal feel, or choose pinks, purples and whites for a softer, more romantic look.”
1. Choose your container
3. Select plants to extend the season
4. Position carefully
2
Squire’s recommends Westland Multi Purpose Compost With Added John Innes, which encourages stronger plant development and longer plant life.
1
A wooden barrel is an attractive choice but you could choose anything you like. Make sure that the container has holes at the bottom for drainage.
4
5. Water and feed
Put the largest plant such as the skimmia in the middle of the container. Carefully place bulbs two to three times their depth and one bulb width apart, pointed end up. Then put smaller plants around the outside.
3
A large skimmia, which is an evergreen shrub with clusters of attractive flowers and berries, makes a great focal point. Plant bulbs such as Narcissus ‘Tete-a-Tete’ miniature daffodils, irises and muscari to give an injection of colour early next year. Add other flowering plants, such as cyclamen, violas and pansies, or try an ornamental cabbage for additional foliage interest. 1 0 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 7
2. Fill with compost
5
Water every few days if it hasn’t rained, and use a feed such as Miracle-Gro all purpose continuous release plant food, which will encourage bigger, lusher plants with noticeably more blooms.
